Saturday Afternoon Thread: Love’s In Need Of Love Today

I know we are all praying for the families of all that have lost their loved ones to senseless violence. In spite of it all, we have to keep the faith, keep pressing on, keep moving forward. Pray for us all.

The press briefing was horrible. Tweets from the media about what the CT medical examiner said were just a nightmare. The kids who were killed were 1st graders, they all suffered between 3-11 gunshot wounds and the .223 assault rifles were used. He also said they had to take pictures of the kids and show them to the parents and that’s how the parents identified their children. When they were reading the children and faculty members names, my heart broke again for the Newtown community. This is supposed to be a period of joy, music, and sparkling lights and the horror that has been visited on this community is just wrong.

    – – –The National Rifle Association (NRA) has remained silent on Friday’s tragic massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, even as gun safety advocates are publicly calling for a national conversation about limiting access to dangerous firearms. While information is still emerging about Adam Lanza — the 20-year-old who killed 20 elementary school students, 6 adults, and his mother — preliminary reports indicate that he used at least three guns: two hand guns and a .223-caliber Bushmaster rifle. The weapons appear to be legally registered to his mother.

    – – –In Light Of Connecticut School Shooting Tragedy, Lawmakers Call For Gun Control Action — –

    – — –In his remarks to the nation about the Connecticut school shooting tragedy, President Obama said Friday, “we’re going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics.” While he did not get specific, some lawmakers were more blunt, arguing that meaningful gun control legislation is needed to reduce the unfathomable number of such mass shootings the nation has endured since Columbine. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY), whose husband was killed and son was injured in a the 1993 Long Island Rail Road shootings said she has given the White House notice that “the gloves are off” and will do everything possible to push for gun control — even if it means embarrassing the president.

    Among the others speaking out:

    1. Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY): “If now is not the time to have a serious discussion about gun control and the epidemic of gun violence plaguing our society, I don’t know when is. How many more Columbines and Newtowns must we live through? I am challenging President Obama, the Congress, and the American public to act on our outrage and, finally, do something about this.”

    2. Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY): “We cannot tolerate mass shootings as a mere inconvenience or a normal part of our everyday lives. Easy availability of the deadliest weapons to the most dangerous people has cost countless lives and caused immeasurable suffering, never more so than today. Our expressions of sympathy must be matched with concrete actions to stop gun violence.”

    3. Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA): “As a nation, we are again confronted with an act of terrifying mass gun violence. While the coming days should be reserved for grieving, as a legislative body, and as a people, we must consider what can be done to improve our laws to prevent the continuation of this horrific trend.”

    – – -SNIP – —

    6. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA): “This touches us all so deeply, and it is long past time that we enacted sensible gun laws and school safety legislation.”

    – –Friday, ESPN suspended Rob Parker after comments he made about Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III.

On ESPN 2′s sports debate show First Take, Parker question ‘what kind of brother’ Griffin was to fellow hosts Skip Bayless, Stephen A. Smith and Cari Champion.

The comments, which I described Thursday as “irresponsible,” led to widespread criticism on social media and several leading sports blogs.

Parker spent much of Thursday defending his remarks on Twitter.

The news of Parker’s suspension came via a tweet from Josh Krulewitz of , ESPN communications department:

    Josh Krulewitz @jksports

Update: “Following yesterday’s comments, Rob Parker has been suspended until further notice. We are conducting a full review.”

This is not the first time Parker has been involved in something controversial.

In 2009, Parker resigned from the Detroit News following what many considered an inappropriate question to then-Lions head coach Rod Marinelli. Following the Lions fifteenth loss of an eventual win-less season in 2008, Parker asked Marinelli if he wished his daughter had “married a better defensive coordinator.” (Marinelli’s daughter was married to Lions defensive coordinator Joe Barry.)

Showing that there is indeed a time when Republicans will cease speaking, Speaker John Boehner declined to give a rebuttal to the President’s address this week. He said, “There will be no Weekly Republican Address this weekend so that President Obama can speak for the entire nation at this time of mourning. —-Andy Marquis, reporter for RACE22.com, is our guest blogger of the day. He used to consider himself a Republican but not any more. He changed his voter registration to Independent in 2011 and says that’s how it will remain.

Here’s his latest guest post (bolding mine):

    NRA’s Deafening Silence Speaks Volumes

In the wake of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, politics has again taken center stage. Once more, the debate over gun control has come up. Within minutes of the shooting, people on the left were calling for gun control or, in more extreme cases, gun bans while people on the right were calling for gun laws to be relaxed or, in extreme cases, calling for all of society to be armed. But in the wake of the debate, the silence of the nation’s largest gun lobby, the National Rifle Association (NRA), speaks volumes of itself.
    – — SNIP – —

The deafening silence speaks volumes because the gun lobby has spent much of the week boasting about the increase in firearm sales in the wake of President Obama’s re-election, and boasting that more legally registered guns are in the hands of civilians in Florida. See, the NRA isn’t about responsible firearm regulation, they’re about no regulation. The NRA, as demonstrated by the facts above, does not represent responsible firearm owners, they represent the firearm and ammunition manufacturers.

For a variety of reasons including the finalization of the process, other pending Cabinet decisions, and — more immediately — the national reaction to the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the news will not be announced in the next few days.

I feel some kind of way about this whole situation and I don’t want any one to be SoS after this, which is ridiculous since someone has to be SoS. The whole thing is tainted now, though.

Never had any problems with Kerry even liked his CRAZYAZZ African American wife Teresa (snark) but after this don’t feel the same way bout him.
He has a lot of work to do to create goodwill with a SIGNIFICANT part of Obama’s base. Let’s see if he’s up to the task or even give a damn what we think or feel.

    • goldenstar

If this is correct, Kerry will have to learn a few things. He cannot be talking to folks who go and tell all. PBO does not stand for that kind of behavior.

      just sayin’…

      • crazycanuck

Which is why I don’t trust him one bit. I think he would stab the President in the back in a nano minute

What’s the benefit of Kerry…what about the senate?

        • nellcote

He’s been chairman of the senate Foreign Relations Committee for a while now. He speaks at least one foreign language (french). His father was a diplomat so he knows the language and the ways of diplomacy. PBO trusts him to go on private missions overseas. Most importantly he has a similar worldview as PBO….and he was smart enough to introduce Senator Barack Obama to the world at the ’04 convention.

    — – –Mandela undergoes successful gallstone surgery – —

    — – –South Africa’s former President Nelson Mandela underwent a successful surgery to remove gallstones Saturday, the nation’s presidency said, as the 94-year-old anti-apartheid icon is still recovering from a lung infection.

Doctors treating Mandela waited to perform the endoscopic surgery as they wanted to first attend to his lung ailment, presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said in a statement. Mandela has been hospitalized since Dec. 8.

In the procedure, a patient usually receives sedatives and an anesthetic to allow a surgeon to put an endoscope down their throat, authorities say. The surgeon then can remove the gallstones, which are small, crystal-like masses that can cause a person tremendous pain.

“The procedure was successful and Madiba is recovering,” Maharaj said, using Mandela’s clan name as many do in South Africa as a sign of affection.

Occasionally, a patient who undergoes the same medical procedure Mandela just had may need to have an additional surgery to have the gallbladder removed, according to medical experts. However, Maharaj’s statement offered no other details about what additional care Mandela may require, nor did it suggest when he could be released from the hospital.

    – – —We knew this would happen sooner or later: The investors who got scammed by the big banks over mortgage securities want their pound of flesh. I wonder how they’re going to weasel out of this one? Will they buy themselves some more judges? Stay tuned:

According to a New York Times report, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo andCitigroup, among others, have been sued by a full spectrum of plaintiffs in connection with more than $1 trillion worth of mortgage securities. Investors have gone to court seeking to have the banks buy back the bum securities, while prosecutors are accusing the banks of fraud and SEC regulators claim they deceived investors about the failed instruments.

Should the dominant forces on Wall Street lose all of the litigation in a worst case scenario, it could cost them as much as $300 billion. One of the major pending lawsuits is a $200 billion case filed by the Federal Housing Finance Agency that argues the banks tricked mortgage financiers into buying faulty securities.

So far, banks have settled only a few cases against them — already paying out billions of dollars to repurchase bad securities — and costs for future settlements and judgments are expected to overshadow what the institutions have spent thus far, according to the Timesreport.

Among the major banks involved, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America and Citigroup are four of the top five political contributors from the commercial banks industry, and together with others in the financial sector played a major role in the 2012 election cycle.
