Melissa Harris-Perry’s Open Letter To Richard Mourdock: Rape Survivors ‘Are The Gift To Ourselves’

On Saturday, MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry presented an open letter to GOP senate candidate Richard Mourdock, drawing on her own experience with sexual assault. In this highly personal response to Mourdock’s statement about pregnancy resulting from rape being something that “God intended to happen,” Harris-Perry shared that she flinches sometimes at others’ touch and that some times of year can be harder because of associated memories. These, she explained, are “triggers” for her and for other survivors, and she spends her life trying to either avoid or manage these. A political race, she added, shouldn’t have to come with a trigger warning.

Survivors of sexual assault, she said, learn not to judge one another’s responses to their respective experiences. She then shared that, as a descendant of American slaves, some of her foremothers were women whose children — conceived through rape — increased the wealth of their rapists. And even these children, as complicated and painful and harrowing as their births may have been, were loved.

Col. Wilkerson’s clip is a thing of beauty. When’s the next racial draft?

    • MonieTalks

Col Wilkerson has been disillusioned with the lying neo-con chickenhawk GOP for a long time. Check out what he said back in 2006:

And I told my mum, I called her and I said: “Mum, you know what? I want my party back. I don’t want to become a Democrat. I want my party back.”

The Republican Party that I knew, that I grew up in, a moderate party, a party that believed in fiscal discipline, a party that believed in small government, a party that had genuine conservative values. This is not a conservative leadership. This is radical leadership. I called them neo-Jacobins. They are radical. They’re not conservative. They’ve stolen my party and I would like my party back.

Brooklyn Teen Close to Becoming First Female African-American Chess Master
Written by Weissman Report Wire Staff Saturday, October 27 2012 01:18

NEW YORK — Rochelle Ballentyne, 17, is just a few wins away from becoming the first female African-American chess master. The Brooklyn native is featured in the documentary Brooklyn Castle, which chronicles the lives of teen chess players in Brooklyn, NY.

Ballentyne, who was raised in a single-parent home in East Flatbush, was introduced to chess by her grandmother. In an interview with Teen Vogue magazine, Ballentyne recalled her grandmother’s influence: “My grandmother. When I first started playing, she introduced to me the idea of being the first African-American female chess master. I didn’t think about it much because for me it seemed like an impossible feat, and I didn’t think it could happen. I wasn’t as focused and dedicated as I am now. I didn’t think I was a good chess player—people told me I was, but it wasn’t my mentality at that moment. But then after she died, that really affected me, because she was the one person that always had confidence in me. She never pushed me, and she always respected me for who I was. I have to reach that goal for her.”

Obama, Romney line up elite lawyers for potential election disputes

As President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney scramble to come out ahead in the November 6 election, two other men are preparing for a legal showdown that could begin the next day.

They are the lawyers who have been tapped by the Obama and Romney teams to navigate any legal challenges to voting procedures or results in a tight contest that could dredge up memories of the disputed 2000 election that was settled by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Leading Romney’s team is Benjamin Ginsberg, chief legal counsel for George W. Bush’s presidential campaigns in 2000 and 2004.

Obama has turned to Robert Bauer, a past White House counsel who has spoken out against Republican-led efforts to alter voting laws in states including Ohio, a politically divided state that could determine who wins the November 6 election.
    [...]
In a memo co-authored with deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter last week, Bauer said new voting laws – including those that require voters to show photo identification – will have a minimal impact on the November 6 election.

The memo concluded that Obama’s campaign and its allies have successfully used the courts and public opinion to reverse Republican attempts to restrict access to voting. The memo’s implied message: The legal battle in this election is underway, and we are winning.

As early vote-day dawns, 1.2m Floridians have voted by absentee ballot. GOP 5-point lead won’t last long

The first day of in-person early voting, which Democrats typically dominate, began this morning with long lines and lots of enthusiasm (story here). The weather was also perfect in South Florida, a boon to President Obama, who needs a large turnout in the liberal stronghold to counteract GOP gains in absentee ballots, which have been mailed in (background on what it all means is here).

Right now, the GOP leads by about 5 percentage points. Around this time in 2008, Republicans led by more than 15 points. But then early in-person voting happened, and Democrats ran up a huge pre-Election Day lead.

U.S. Set to Sponsor Health Insurance

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration will soon take on a new role as the sponsor of at least two nationwide health insurance plans to be operated under contract with the federal government and offered to consumers in every state.

These multistate plans were included in President Obama’s health care law as a substitute for a pure government-run health insurance program — the public option sought by many liberal Democrats and reviled by Republicans. Supporters of the national plans say they will increase competition in state health insurance markets, many of which are dominated by a handful of companies.

The national plans will compete directly with other private insurers and may have some significant advantages, including a federal seal of approval. Premiums and benefits for the multistate insurance plans will be negotiated by the United States Office of Personnel Management, the agency that arranges health benefits for federal employees.

Medicaid Spending Growth Dropped This Year |

A new report notes that this year’s Medicaid spending growth slowed to 2 percent, in what health policy analysts are praising as a sign that national Medicaid costs are coming under control as the economy continues to stabilize. In 2011, Medicaid spending rose to 10 percent. The current drop is partially driven by the past three consecutive years of slowing enrollment numbers in the program, as well as state-level efforts to rein in costs. Vernon Smith, one of the authors of the study, noted that this represents the second slowest growth in the history of the Medicaid program. “States are working very hard to improve value and slow the rate of growth of Medicaid,” he said, and the health care reform law will continue to encourage them to do so.

Obama Weighs In On Sununu’s Powell Comments

[....] “I’ll let Gen. Powell’s statement speak for itself,” Obama told radio host Michael Smerconish in an Oval Office interview on Friday. “I don’t think that there are many people in America who would question Gen. Powell’s credibility, his patriotism, his willingness to tell it straight — so any suggestion that Gen. Powell would make such a profound statement in such an important election based on anything other than what he thought would be best for America doesn’t make much sense.”[....]

If PBO had never been president he would have made a fabulous Secretary of State. Soooo diplomatic.

    • nasani

You know what’s funny, If you are white and you endorse a white candidate, like Mitt Romney, just as Sununu, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, John McCain and the editors of DMR, have done, no one dares to say that your endorsement was because Mitt Romney is white. This is at the heart of white privilege. You see white endorsement of white candidates, even though it may have absolutely nothing to do with the white candidate’s record that you disagree with is NEVER about race; but a black person’s endorsement of a black candidate, like that of Gen. Powell, even though it may be based on agreement with his/her policies, is always portrayed as being entirely based on race. Never mind the fact that Black presidential candidates, like Alan Keys and Herman Cain, received virtually no support from the Black community. They never pose to ask why the majority of Black people in MD voted for a white candidate for the U.S. Senate against a black candidate, Michael Steele.

I am sorry, but I am tired of these privileged white racists who think that the only blacks worthy of their praise are those blacks who always go against the interests of the vast majority of Black people.

—-Sandy Gone in Caribbean, Clean Up Begins - –

    – —PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Hurricane Sandy is swirling off toward the U.S. East Coast, leaving the Caribbean to mourn the storm-related deaths of at least 43 people and clean up wrecked homes, felled power lines and fallen tree branches.

While Jamaica, Cuba and the Bahamas took direct hits from the storm, the majority of deaths and most extensive damage was in impoverished Haiti, where it has rained almost non-stop since Tuesday.

The death toll in Haiti stood at 29 late Friday, but officials worried that the number could rise as searches continued in the country’s ramshackle housing and denuded hillsides that are especially vulnerable to flooding when rains come.
    - – — SNIP – - –
    Bahamas
The storm then churned into the Bahamas archipelago, toppling light posts, flooding roads and ripping down tree branches
Police said the British CEO of an investment bank died when he fell from his roof in upscale Lyford Cay late Thursday while trying to repair a window shutter. Officials at Deltec Bank & Trust identified him as Timothy Fraser-Smith, who became CEO in 2000.

    Puerto Rico
In Puerto Rico, police said a man in his 50s died Friday in the southern town of Juana Diaz, swept away in a river swollen by rain from Sandy’s outer bands. Flooding forced at least 100 families in southwestern Puerto Rico to seek shelter.

Authorities in the Dominican Republic evacuated more than 18,100 people after the storm destroyed several bridges and isolated at least 130 communities. Heavy rains and wind also damaged an estimated 3,500 homes.

Gossip Extra: Graphic abortion ads prompt angry calls from the public
    By Jose Lambiet

Thousands of South Florida TV viewers have called or emailed network affiliates to complain about anti-abortion ads that have flooded the airwaves this week.

The ads, paid for by U.S. Congress hopeful and anti-abortion rabble rouser Randall Terry, show scenes better suited for the grossest Halloween horror movies. They have aired in the middle of the night in most cases, but also at family-dinner time.

The images in four promos include what appear to be mangled human fetuses, tiny body parts and even a lifeless infant stuffed in a bloody plastic bucket.

    - — –Richard Mourdock’s Extremist Views Are Shared by Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan – —

    – — –Over the past eleven years the word extremist has become entrenched in the lexicon when describing terrorists or Islamic radicals, but it can certainly apply to any group whose ideology is outside the perceived center of a society or violates common moral standards. Extremism can be defined as beliefs, attitudes, or actions far removed from the ordinary depending on the observer’s values and moral scope. It is disturbing that in a moderate society like America, extremism is rising to keep pace with radical Islam and as usual, it has as its basis religious dogmata, notably, the Hebrew scriptures that many conservatives believe should replace the Constitution as the law of the land. For the past few days there has been outrage over Richard Mourdock’s remark that rape is a form of god’s blessing on a woman, but his so-called extremist view is the mainstream position of the Republican Party including the party’s presidential ticket.

If Americans recall, the official platform of the Republican party concurs with Mourdock’s extremist understanding of pregnancy resulting from the violent act of rape. It is crucial to note that rape is, next to murder, as traumatic and heinous an act against a woman there is, and regardless a person’s religious views or intrinsic misogyny, it is a crime unlike any other as far as the degree of viciousness and intrusion into a woman’s body. Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan cavalierly contends rape is just another form of conception, and he cemented his pro-life credibility working in concert with Missouri senatorial candidate Todd Akin in co-sponsoring a federal personhood bill, the Sanctity of Life Act, in 2009 that gives a zygote the same Constitutional rights and privileges as an adult with total disregard for a woman.

Wells Fargo Evicts Terminally Ill Woman Despite Federal Court Order – –

    – —-This may well be a new low for a bank. On the morning of October 10, 2012, Niko Black was in bed when her front door was kicked open by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Black, who has terminal cancer, crawled to her wheelchair as four-to-six deputies entered and proceeded to hold a gun to her face. She was then taken outside without any of her medication. When she called the Garden Grove Police, they did nothing. Since all of her medication and other means of treatment were in her home, Black began to have difficulty breathing, and very quickly and had to be taken to the hospital.

    Via:

The 37-year-old Mescalero Apache woman, who suffers from a rare, malignant and metastatic form of cancer, refused to open the door, saying that they had no legal right to be there. On the other side was a taped copy of a court order obtained from Federal Bankruptcy Judge Theodore C. Albert in late August that she firmly believes should have prevented the OCSD from carrying out the eviction. The deputies acted anyway.

“They break down my door,” Black recounts. “I’m sitting there in my wheel chair. I’m about 100 pounds of shriveled-up cancer and a threat to no one.”

What came next, she says, was much more harrowing. “Sergeant Bob Sima puts a gun to my face, finger on the trigger, no safety and walks around me,” Black states, pausing to emotionally gather herself. “There’s no reason, except for to threaten my life, for an intimidation factor, to put a gun to my head.”

    – - – - -SNIP – –

If this situation weren’t complicated enough, according to an online petition circulating in support of Black, she never even had a mortgage with Wells Fargo!

In Person Absentee Voting in VA

Va. electoral board offers guidance as storm nears

The Virginia State Board of Elections is advising local registrars to accommodate voters who ask to vote absentee because of the potential impact of Hurricane Sandy.

In-person absentee voting is being conducted on weekdays and the last two Saturdays before election day. The board is urging localities to keep registrar offices open and continue the in-person absentee voting unless the storm makes conditions unsafe for employees and voters.

    – - – -WaPo Poll: Obama Still Above 50 Percent, Holds 4-Point Lead In Virginia

    – - –President Barack Obama earns the support of more than half of likely Virginia voters and leads Mitt Romney by 4 points in the ultra-competitive battleground, according to a poll from the Washington Post released on Saturday night.

The poll shows Obama leading Romney among likely Commonwealth voters 51 percent to 47 percent. That’s narrowly outside of the survey’s margin of error of 3.5 percentage points and a tightening since the previous Washington Post poll of Virginia a month ago, which showed the president leading the Republican nominee 52 percent to 44 percent.

But Saturday’s poll suggests that Obama has weathered a difficult stretch of the campaign and emerged with the lead in Old Dominion, a state where he had been consistently outpolling Romney during the summer months and through September. The poll indicates that the president has maintained his upper hand over Romney in a key policy area and among an important voting bloc in Virginia.

    From the Washington Post’s analysis:

Unlike in national polls, Obama still has an edge when Virginia voters are asked who better understands their financial problems, and he has not fallen behind a surging Romney on the question of who would better handle the national economy. Nor has Obama lost significant ground among self-identified independents in Virginia, as he has nationally.

The National Angry Over The Use Of “Fake Empire” In Pro-Romney Ad

The National have been avid supporters of Barack Obama in both of his presidential campaigns so it’s no surprise that the band is angry their song was used in a pro-Mitt Romney ad.

The video which was posted on Youtube by the group Ohio University Students for Romney features the band’s song “Fake Empire” in the background. The song was also used by the Obama campaign in an advertisement back in 2008.

In response, frontman Matt Berninger posted the following comment on the video’s Youtube Page:

“Our music was used without our permission in this ad. The song you’re using was written about the same backward, con game policies Romney is proposing. We encourage all students to educate themselves about the differences between the inclusive, pro-social, compassionate, forward-thinking policies of President Obama and the self-serving politics of the neo-conservative movement and Mitt Romney. Every single person involved in the creation of the music you’re using is voting for President Obama.”

    – - – -A Look Back at Romney’s Flip Flops and His Mental Condition – –

    – - –October 27, 2012 There are only 10 days to go before the nation goes to the voting booths, either going off a cliff with Mitt Romney or undoing the 2010 mid-term election damage and voting for a Democrat Congress in both Houses.

It’s time for the voters to take a long, look back at the last two years of Mitt Romney’s campaign speeches and the number of times he has flip-flopped on issues.

    Romney’s Flip Flops In Action

This video in only a few short minutes explains why the nation cannot vote for this man. The lying, the walk backs, the flip flops shows great instability in Mitt Romney and an inability to lead one of the world’s most powerful countries. On the foreign policy issues, Romney has destroyed any credibility with one of our strongest allies, the United Kingdom.

He’s flopped on the domestic issue of jobs due to his profits from Bain Capital which is a vulture capital company that still continues to outsource jobs to this very day.

Rubio spokesman Alex Conant wrote in an email late Saturday that Amanda, who is the senator’s oldest daughter, was in “fair condition” after the afternoon accident.

“While visiting with classmates, she was a passenger on a golf cart involved in a collision in a private gated community,” Conant wrote. “She was airlifted to Miami Children’s Hospital with a head injury. She has been admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.”

    – — Chrysler Responds to Romney’s Misinformation on China – - – -

    - – - -Oct. 27, 2012 Mitt Romney’s gaff yesterday that Chrysler Jeep division is moving to China is totally false said Chrysler when they released a statement to correct the misinformation Romney stated to the public.

Here is the clip where Romney made his false statements about Chrysler in a campaign speech in Defiance, Ohio. Ohio is a state where the Obama administration created millions of jobs by lending General Motors money which they paid back already:

    Romney’s own words:

“I saw a story today, that one of the world’s great manufacturers in this state, Jeep now owned by the Italians, is thinking of moving all production to China!” All production he said.

The story was printed in Bloomberg, and was misquoted plus highly inaccurate.
    Here’s the clip:

    – - – – –SNIP – –
In reality he was lying again and Chyrsler responded with this statement:
    Jeep in China

    – - — –SNIP — -

    – -Let’s set the record straight: Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China. It’s simply reviewing the opportunities to return Jeep output to China for the world’s largest auto market. U.S. Jeep assembly lines will continue to stay in operation. A careful and unbiased reading of the Bloomberg take would have saved unnecessary fantasies and extravagant comments.” end quote

I always heard that David Stern the NBA commissioner was a sadistic asshole, but fully confirmed it when I heard that in an interview he for no reason at all declared that President Obama “isn’t that good at basketball.

Sorry, but what the hell is up with all these seriously insecure men with huge chips on their shoulders waddling around looking for something, anything at all to say to try to diminish President Obama?

Last I heard, he is the President of the United States who just happens to enjoy playing basketball. It’s not like he’s looking to be drafted by a team? No?

The spite and pettiness and uncalled for silliness on David Stern’s part is stunning in its stupidity and the way it exposes the Obama Derangement Syndrome that has afflicted so many who once thought of themselves as relevant.

Yes, even so-called “passionate Democrats” as David Stern quickly describes himself after his little petty and unnecessary badmouthing.

Some day the story will be told and written about how the Barack Obama and his ascension to the presidency completely unmasked, exposed and drove insane the many utterly shallow, simple, useless and incredibly small men who once managed to hide their incredible shortcomings behind their inherited and stolen wealth and titles.
