WOW! I. did. not. know. this.

Lost Chaka Khan Interview: Tell Me Something True! (Me and Stevie Wonder Never Hooked Up)

[....] “What was your favorite moment?”

“It probably was when Stevie Wonder came into the studio. We didn’t believe he was gonna show up. But he came, and that sorta rocked my world. We were brand new to the industry. And I’d grown up listening to Stevie, so I was a little bit star-struck.”

“He came and offered two songs to us. The first one, I didn’t like
it, and I told him,” continued Chaka, who has won 10 Grammy Awards. “He said, ‘What’s your birth sign?’ I said, ‘Aries.’ He said, ‘Oh, I got something for you.’ “Then he played Tell Me Something Good. He started out, then we kind of wrote it together.”

Chaka also collaborated with Grandmaster Melle Mel in 1984 on the Prince-penned hit I Feel for You.[....]

Hmmmm…not rushing to judgment on this issue, but something doesn’t pass the smell test. Since when is not lining up young black and Latinos a dereliction of duty? You mean to tell me that the NYPD doesn’t have better things to do than trying to make sure no one urinates on a building or jumps a turnstyle? More of the same dressed up as change means more citations being issued, higher crime stats and more revenue for the city while criminalizing young people for stoopid reasons. “But so what?” GTFOBS!

[....] If cops are not doing stop-and-frisk, they are not doing their jobs. It is a basic, fundamental tool of police work in the whole country. If you do away with stop-and-frisk, this city will go down the chute as fast as anything you can imagine.”

We also discussed the current controversy over stop-and-frisk under Raymond Kelly, Bloomberg’s Police Commissioner. “What you have right now is a controversy in which nobody really understands what they are fighting about,” Bratton said. “Stop-and-frisk is not a tool solely to look for guns. Unfortunately, both the Mayor and the Police Commissioner refer to it that way, and that’s a problem because so few guns are recovered.

But so what? The vast majority of stops are for a wide variety of things. Is someone drinking a can of beer on the corner? You want to stop that behavior. If somebody is aggressively panhandling on the street, urinating against a building. Is there somebody that you suspect is casing a building? Or is that two guys just locked out of their apartment? Police officers notice what may be a burglary. Of
course they should be noticing and investigating. There are countless examples of what you want police to do.”[....]

Vermont Chief Judge: The Criminal Justice System Can’t Solve The Drug Problem

[....]While Reiber’s role as a judge precludes him from taking a position on drug policy laws, he cited statistics in Portugal, which eliminated all penalties for drug possession in 2001 and saw a drop in drug use alongside a spike in treatment.

He said he views the overarching problem as one that affects the
judiciary as much as other branches, given repeat offenders, tough
punishments for low-level crimes, and other ancillary offenses that
result from a lack of sufficient drug treatment programs.

He has seen a spike in felonies in his courtroom from drug cases, for example, but also a spike in child neglect cases, many of which he attributes to drug-abusive parents who are being funneled into the criminal justice system rather than receiving help.[....]

Minn. festival team aims for record snowball fight

A cast of Minnesota beer enthusiasts has a frosty ambition: To stage the largest snowball fight ever. The group started to nurture the state’s craft brewing industry announced the goal Wednesday and hopes to achieve it during the Beer Dabbler Winter Carnival on Jan. 25 at the state fairgrounds.

It would mean topping a Guinness World Record set this January in
Seattle, when more than 5,800 people engaged in a snowball fight. The Minnesota team wants a minimum of 7,000.[....] To set the record, enough participants need to spend at least one minute hurling snowballs at each other.

    – - -Koch Brothers Illegally Funnel Millions Into Campaign to Eliminate Pensions and Sick Pay

    – — -Greed is the inordinate desire to possess wealth, goods, or objects of abstract value with the intention to keep it for one’s self, far beyond what one needs for basic survival; for the wealthy it is in excess of any reasonable definition of luxurious comfort. Typically it is applied to those with a dangerous desire for, and pursuit of, status and unrestricted power that includes enriching oneself at the expense of others. There is a movement in America that transcends the normal definition of greed and selfishness, and not only do they desire to possess all the wealth, they are driven to impoverish the population with no apparent gain for themselves. It is not enough that they are rich beyond imagination, they subscribe to a philosophy that no-one in America except a certain class should have anything, and they are launching a nationwide campaign to eliminate public sector workers’ wages, pensions, sick pay, workers’ compensation because if they cannot have it no-one can.

It is no surprise that the funding mechanism behind the 50-state
crusade to create a nation of peasants is headed by the Koch brothers, tobacco giant Phillip Morris, and Kraft Foods with model legislation provided by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).The groups’ $83 million seed money is being funneled through various 501(C) tax-exempt “social welfare” organizations intent on illegally using dark money to lobby legislators and convince voters that no-one in America deserves anything other than a poverty existence. The purely libertarian-driven group, State Policy Network (SPN), describes itself as “free-market think tanks” and will initially targets six different states to eliminate public sector pensions, cut government wages to the federal minimum, privatize public education, and eliminate Medicaid. As an extra affront to the people’s rights to clean air, the seek to end regional efforts to combat greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change.

    Ok, I admit, I’m a sucker for Christmas movies, even if I’m a bit of a bah-humbug…lol.

What’s your favorite classic Christmas movie or new Christmas movie? I’m partial to It’s A Wonderful Life even if I tend to roll my eyes at it all. I STILL watch every year it comes on.

Right now, I’m watching the remake of Miracle on 34th Street with Sir Richard Attenbourough, Dylan McDermott and Elizabeth Perkins on HBO. Who else is watching?

I was out on a business trip and I’m still catching up. Reading Soonergrunt’s post about his daughter reminded me of how I felt the day Obamacare passed. I was relieved because I knew that my daughter, who has a serious, lifelong pre-existing condition, will always be able to get insurance. Obamacare saved her, my wife and me thousands of dollars and years of worry.

    – – –Hello, My name is Brittany and I would like to share my story. Being only 20 years old, I have never known or participated much in politics other than in my government classes. I only recently began paying attention to the presidential candidates and this year’s election, because of a small yet important set of events.

My fiancé just got into a car accident a couple of months ago, and although it could have been way worse, it did require a hospital visit. We are very thankful that he was allowed to go home that night with nothing but some stitches and a pair of crutches. Of course we knew that we would have to follow up with several doctors, car insurance, and police reports.

We did not worry about how the car insurance and police reports would play out because he was very simply not at fault in this case. However, what we dreaded was the hospital/doctor bills we would receive. My fiancé, Brandon, turned 25 this year and to our knowledge had no health insurance.

As the bills started to come in, our debt appeared to be increasing,
and he was out of work until he healed. After a few phone calls, we had Obama to thank.. Since the ObamaCare bill had been passed, he was now covered under his dads insurance!
