Saturday Afternoon Thread: The Ice Bowl

*Que The Queen*……..AIN’T NO WAY!

The Ice Bowl, the coldest game on record in NFL history, is about to get a run for its money.

Temperatures for Sunday’s wild-card game between the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers, which kicks off at 4:40 p.m. ET in northern Wisconsin, are expected to dip under the 13-below figure that marked the classic NFL Championship game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Packers on Dec. 31, 1967. “Low temperatures may fall to 30 below over north-central portions of Wisconsin … Monday and Tuesday morning,” the National Weather Service office in Green Bay writes (via the Capital Weather Gang). “If you plan on being outside, be sure to dress warm using layered clothing if possible, as frost bite can occur in as little as 10 minutes in these conditions.”

Back in 1967, the Packers beat the Cowboys 21-17 on Bart Starr’s quarterback sneak on an icy field with 16 seconds left. As the Packers debated what play to call during a timeout, Coach Vince Lombardi famously told Starr to “run it and let’s get the hell out of here.” Good game plan. Jerry Kramer threw a block on Jethro Pugh, Starr followed him into the end zone and the Packers did just that. The game has grown in legend over the years and, on Friday, players were bracing for just that kind of teeth-chattering/shattering cold. (And being thankful for GoreTex.)

WOULD YOU SIT OUT IN THAT??

Dedications to the POU Fam above the Mason Dixon Line!

Anatomy of an Obamacare ‘horror story’

Texas daily went digging for victims of the ACA and Surprise! Reporter unearthed three Tea Partiers who hate the new law.
By Maggie Mahar January 3, 2014

For months, health reform’s opponents have been feasting on tales of Obamacare’s innocent victims – Americans who lost their insurance because it doesn’t comply with the ACA’s regulations, and now have to shell out more than they can afford – or go without coverage.

Trouble is, many of those stories just aren’t true.

Yesterday I posted about a Fort Worth Star Telegram article that leads with the tale of Whitney Johnson, a 26-year-old new mother who suffers from multiple sclerosis (MS). Her insurer just cancelled her policy, and according to Johnson, new insurance would cost her over $1,000 a month.

That claim stopped me in my tracks. Under the ACA, no 26-year-old could be charged $1,000 monthly – even if she has MS.

Obamacare prohibits insurers from charging more because a customer suffers from a pre-existing condition. This rule applies to all new policies, whether they are sold inside or outside the exchanges.

At that point, I knew that something was wrong.

Ya know….sometimes…a good PB&J sandwich can REALLY set you off right..it just hits the hunger spot so well!

IOWA MAN ARRESTED AFTER FIGHT OVER PB&J SANDWICH

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Police say an Iowa man was arrested after he pulled a knife on his brother during a fight over peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The Des Moines Register reports that Jerome Davis was arrested on Friday after the confrontation with his brother in their Des Moines home. Both men are in their 50s.

Davis’ accuser told police he was angry because he believed his brother was eating too many peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Davis allegedly made three sandwiches and ate them in their living room, and made another less than an hour later.

WATCH: George Zimmerman’s Girlfriend Reveals Disturbing New Details in Police Video
By Mariah Blake Fri Jan. 3, 2014 7:27 AM

Last November, after a heated domestic dispute and a frantic call to 911, George Zimmerman’s girlfriend told police that he had threatened her with a shotgun. The allegations were eerily similar to those lodged by Zimmerman’s ex-wife following his acquittal on charges of murdering unarmed teen Trayvon Martin, and they seemed to signal a pattern of uncontrolled violence.

Zimmerman’s girlfriend, 27-year-old Samantha Scheibe, later recanted the accusations, saying in a sworn statement that she was “intimidated” during police questioning and believed investigators had “misinterpreted” her words. But a recently released video of Scheibe’s police interview casts doubt on her disavowal. It also adds credibility and violent new detail to Scheibe’s original account.

Pope calls for fresh Church approach to children of gay parents
    1 hour ago

Rome (AFP) – Pope Francis has called for a rethink in the way the Catholic Church deals with the children of gay couples and divorced parents, warning against “administering a vaccine against faith”.

“On an educational level, gay unions raise challenges for us today which for us are sometimes difficult to understand,” Francis said in a speech to the Catholic Union of Superiors General in November, extracts of which were published on Italian media websites on Saturday.

“The number of children in schools whose parents have separated is very high,” he said, adding that family make-ups were also changing.

“I remember a case in which a sad little girl confessed to her teacher: ‘my mother’s girlfriend doesn’t love me’,” he was quoted as saying.

The pontiff said educational leaders should ask themselves “how can we proclaim Christ to a generation that is changing?”

“We must be careful not to administer a vaccine against faith to them,” the 77-year-old added.

Though the Church has often been in conflict with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community over its opposition to same-sex marriage and to homosexuality, Francis has drawn praise for attempts to be inclusive.

In July he reached out to gays, declaring that “if someone is gay and seeks the Lord with good will, who am I to judge?”

Ever since he started acting all Christ-like and stuff, I hoped he did not get John Paul, the Firsted.

John Paul I was found dead sitting up in his bed shortly before dawn on 28 September 1978,[22]
just 33 days into his papacy. The Vatican reported that the 65-year-old
pope most likely died the previous night of a heart attack. It has been
claimed that the Vatican had altered some of the details of the
discovery of the death to avoid possible unseemliness[23][24] in that he was discovered by Sister Vincenza Taffarel, who was a nun.[25]
Inconsistent statements were made relating to who found John Paul I’s
body, the time when he was found, and what papers were in his hand.
These various issues led to a number of conspiracy theories concerning his death. The Vatican has not investigated the claims and does not believe in any possible foul play.

*sigh*…Don Lemon is seriously an embarrassment at this point.

Don Lemon: It’s Going to Be ‘Tough’ if New NYC Mayor Wants to ‘Play Robin Hood’
    by Josh Feldman | 3:16 pm, January 4th, 2014

One of the issues New York City mayor Bill de Blasiomade front and center in his campaign last year was economic fairness, but will he be able to see that though? CNN’s Don Lemon said Friday night it’s going to be tough for the new mayor to “play Robin Hood,” as he took note of the highly partisan and aggressive speeches at de Blasio’s swearing-in this week.

Lemon brought up a provocative question from U.S. News & World Report: Is de Blasio the future of the Democratic party? Lemon said that from personal experience he knows that New York is truly a tale of two cities, and the question is, really, who the city belongs to: “a group that has economically driven it and reduced crime for the past two decades, or does it belong to the group that feels resentful and exploited and are now unabashedly bashing the past few administrations?”

Lemon also wondered if Democrats are more angry about having been out of power in the mayor’s office for decades more so than they’re angry about the state of the city. And if de Blasio has a radical new agenda for the city, then, Lemon said, he’s going to have a rough time of it and risks alienating people.

This would be a very big deal – he could possibly get a bigger salary than Nick Saban, not to mention a black head coach at a program this big. Already the conservative sports media is getting their shade on, on various sites about it – but the Texas oil men know, they gotta get the players and Charlie Strong will get them.

    Horns offer Charlie Strong job
    Updated: January 4, 2014, 3:00 PM ET

Texas has offered its coaching job to Louisville coach Charlie Strong, and he is expected to accept, according to multiple media reports.

Strong, though, told Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich on Friday night that he has not accepted the job, Jurich told ESPN’s Brett McMurphy. Strong wants to talk to Jurich and Louisville president James Ramsey on Saturday, another source said. Jurich was in Colorado on vacation on Friday night and his return was delayed by weather.

Strong met with his staff for about 15 minutes on Saturday morning and told them he hasn’t decided to accept Texas’ offer to become its coach.A source earlier said Strong had not been formally offered the Longhorns’ job but would accept it if he was.

Cardinals football spokesman Rocco Gasparro said Saturday that Strong told his staff that “no decision had been made” on whether to leave the school after four years, and there was no timetable on a decision.

“It’s a difficult decision for him,” Gasparro said.

Strong, 53, is coming off his second straight double-digit victory season. He took over a program coming off three straight nonwinning seasons and has gone 37-15.

I figured, if she ddin’t really need the job, then maybe she would be more inclined to say the usual “apology” and then just say “fuck it”, but I’m guessing since her husband’s failure at the attempt to get elected to public office, maybe she is the one bringing in the big bucks and I suspect the MSNBC gig brings in more than her Tulane gig.

So here it is, she apologizes and cries.

Now Maddow, I sincerely think she could care less if she lost her show, first because unlike MHP, she ‘s white, she’s gay and she knows that any number of news orgs would jump over their dead momma to hire Maddow. And Maddow’s show is the big ratings money maker for MSNBC’s opinion shows.

I fully expect Maddow to say “whatever” and keep it moving.

As for MHP’s apology, she has completely lost ANY respect I ever had for her and now we know that in terms of “leadership”, she ain’t willing to lead shit.

Can anyone of us see Rev Al apologizing for essentially something that he did not do?

Nope. Rev Al will be like “dueces” and be up out. It’s why I think Rev Al keeps his radio show and his NAN show and his appearances on TJMS and stuff, cause he knows soon as Obama is out of office, the white PTB at MSNBC and the usual suspects will be out with the knives for him.

      • itgurl_29

And Rev. Al doesn’t need MSNBC. This is just another paycheck for him, not his main focus. He could lose his show tomorrow and it would not change anything for him. He still has influence and he’s still gonna get paid. He’s not relying on the kindness of white folk. MHP is stupid and she’s all talk, like the rest of these Ivory Tower and twitter academics out there.

        • rikyrah

Been missing you, itgurl. You and these righteous comments

        • AxelFoley

The comments are hilarious! People were still commenting on this article a year later lol. How come every time it’s mentioned that whites get more gov benefits than poc they get mad. They say we shouldn’t go by color but by class.

    – – — -The Tennessee Titans have fired Mike Munchak after three seasons as headcoach and 31 years combined with this franchise as a player and coach, the team has confirmed. General manager Ruston Webster says in a statement that the last week was a difficult time trying to figure out how to move the Titans forward. The general manager says tough choices resulted in the decision to go on without Munchak. Munchak flew to Texas yesterday morning to meet with team president Tommy Smith and Webster.
The coach had a season left on his contract. He was 22-26 since being

“When asked where they thought the happy couple would be now, Guy told Essence in late 2012, “I think they’d still be married. I think they’d have a son and he’d be in early adulthood … A happy marriage … but after 20 years, I think some conflict coming up now that their son is gone and they’re less focused on him.” Hardison added, “I think four kids in. Still married. Still fighting. Upper middle class probably. Still in love.”

      • EpiphanySweet

Yes that is my concern Job availability for those without a degree and I don’t want to live in a rough neighborhood in a new city/state.

    • sagittarius

      Hey Sis!

I think the best way to research a new state is to decide what you DON’T want. If a bitterly cold climate is not your cup of tea, that eliminates the Midwest and Northeastern states. If getting bang for your working $ is what you require, that eliminates NYC and Washington, DC.

Once you determine what is important, you will begin to narrow your choices by eliminating locales that don’t meet the criteria and can focus on the cities/states that are left.

      • EpiphanySweet

No bitter cold.. Just NO. Not interested in NYC or DC. I was thinking more southern states. I am born and bred in Cali and have never lived anywhere else.

        • sagittarius

Are other West Coast states, i.e. Oregon or Washington a consideration?

you move, Epiphany. WHY you want to
move really matters. You don’t have to say here; it’s just what’s going now can make
other places seem better. Work, family,
close friend(s), church, or other support systems really, really matter getting set up

Do not move herd Monie! Y’all know I am not the type to talk down my own people but the truth needs to be told. Some of the black folks here are nasty and mean as hell towards other black folks. I have been here for six months yet still taken aback at the way these black folks treat each other. I don’t know maybe the stress of racism is the reason. All I know is after my youngest graduate s I am getting the hell out of here.

          • EpiphanySweet

I definitely have zero interest in moving there. That’s sad to hear about how black folks are treating each other.

          • MonieTalks

Wow. What the heck is going on?

First thing I thought about with OK was tornadoes. I am terrified of the prospect of being in one. That is why the Midwest has always been off my list of places to live.

Mind you, VA can experience 3 different seasons in one day. But for the most part we are shielded by some of the most extreme weather due to our location. Storm systems that arrive with the Midwest normally weaken by the time they get here. Cold Northeast air sometimes dips down but we are often spared the brunt of it. And hurricanes are normally weakened by the time they reach here.

As a person who has moved coast to coast more times than I like to count, often with no say about the move I would advise you to think carefully & prepare before you make the move.

Do lots of research on line. This is a great resource I did not have in the past. If you can talk to people who live or have lived there. But above all before you make the move, actually take some time to visit what you think will be your final destination. Get the vibe, feel how you are greeted & treated. This will tell you a lot.

If you belong to a church or other group, reach out to them in that city & they will also help you decide.

      • EpiphanySweet

Thanks Aquagranny. I do plan to visit prior to any move. Just needed to narrow down the choices. The urge to try someplace new is strong.

one of my favorites (non-Dwayne/Whitley) is when they were doing the educational infomational panel on Black history and Whitley finds out that her family owned slaves. Kim has issues about the Black Mammyorabilia of Mr. Gaines (she has color issues), and he schools her, and she starts out playing Aunt Jemima and winds up at the end of the segment, she’s the African Queen.

Evening, Fam. I will weigh in on the whole Melissa Perry Harris contretemps.

A minute ago, I was thinking about this situation while making a cup of tea. My Dad taught me a long time ago – ‘never let someone make you cry. Once they figure out what will make you cry, they will try to keep you in tears.’ Now, admittedly, this lesson had to do with sibling teasing that upset me. But I always carry this lesson with me.

There was one time in 1998 where I was soooooo upset behind something that happened on the job. I went into a secluded dark bathroom where I was alone and cried hot, salty tears. I vowed that if I EVER cried on that job again, I was out.

I don’t care HOW GOOD the money is. Once someone figures you can be bought, your life won’t be worth a damn. They will keep you dancing like a puppet on a string and if you’re lucky, you won’t be degraded in the process. I don’t think anyone gets that lucky, because if someone gets off in making another person beg or demean themselves, that some deep, twisted sadistic isht. That sick person really wants to see how much the other person will debase themselves for those dollars.

I know MHP has bills – we all do. But, you in danger, girl. They peeped your hole card and know you will do anything to keep this gig. And they will make you do anything to keep it, too.

Sag, it was the kind of crying that got to me. I’ve seen women cry that communicated conviction and strength, with no ground loss.

MHP’s jag had a wounded puppy vibe to it rather than “how dare you, considering my background”. The irony of this, with her Mormon background (her mother is an ex-Mormon no less) and her considerable intellectual chops she could have stood her ground and went to war.

      • qosine

    from TOD:

    hopefruit2
    January 4, 2014 at 1:09 pm

With the utmost respect and I’m sorry GB to have disagree at this
time – but I saw nothing “adult” about MHP’s apology. And here’s why I say this. MHP in the past has said some highly offensive remarks about PBO – from condemning his speeches to outright lying on national TV by claiming that he accused single mothers of being responsible for gun violence. When this was brought to her attention did she apologize or even revise her remarks? No – instead she doubled down, reacted in an extremely arrogant manner, blocked people and got a few of her minions to attack the dissenters with full force.

Fast forward to this issue…MHP basically joked about something that looked like (and most likely WAS) a desperate political act on the part of the Romneys. She was NOT attacking the adopted child. She was not attacking trans-racial adoptions. Yet she was made to apologize (which she did on Tweeter with several tweets) for something she didn’t do. Furthermore, Joe Scarborough added insult to the injury by sending out a passive-aggressive “congratulatory” tweet to the Romneys invoking the SAME said adopted child.

In contrast, when David Gregory and Jodi Kantor had a Twitter
exchange directly attacking the Obama’s for supposedly “staging” their family life, there was nary a peep from the left or anyone on MSNBC. The only people raising a stink were the TODers, and some of the Obots on Twitter. The general media was deathly silent about this.

Thus I am of the opinion that MHP was not apologizing out of a
sincere belief that this was the thing to do or out of “consideration
for the other side.” She was not apologizing in order to retain a
position to do greater good for humanity. She apologized to retain her job at MSNBC to pay her bills and afford her the lifestyle she has come to enjoy.

    • jds09

      Well said.

      • AxelFoley

That’s why I ain’t shedding any tears for her. She can talk big shit about PBO and get a pat on the head from the higher ups at MSNBC, but when she oversteps her bounds, she knuckles under. I thought she’d dig in, but I shoulda known better.

I’m going to piss some people off with my comments and I know it will set some people off, so get ready.

That Steppin Fetchit apology vid from Melissa Harris Perry was just sad. I’m going to keep it real. It was sad. No, it wasn’t a damn sincerity dripping video, it was just someone buckdancing to Mr. Charlie once again. If you are getting the vibe that I am not feeling that video or that Melissa Harris Perry has no sympathy from me, you are right. Karma just checkmated her behind, because I remember she was big and bad berating Barack Obama. I remember this………

    http://reignofapril.blogspot.com/2013/02/does-president-obama-have-daddy-issues.html

She went after President Obama like he was her ex-husband, emasculating him and hitting him below the belt, measuring up his very thought provoking comments as an attack on her personally. It just goes to show that Michelle Obama is a graceful and benevolent woman, because Mrs. Obama could have did what Jill Scott did in this video and nearly catch ass whuppin fever on Melissa for that.

(By the way, Ms. Jilly from Philly also said the very same thing the President said and IS a single mom as well. Her points as per this article…

    http://www.clutchmagonline.com/2013/04/jill-scott-on-being-a-single-mom-in-ebony-magazine-i-cannot-show-him-how-to-be-a-man/

And when Black Twitter chin checked her for that, she then went bad after us like we slapped her mother. Yeah, when its black folks, you can pull your wig off, kick off your shoes, take your earrings off, do the Ms. Thang neck roll and shake your finger at us and hogcall, but when its white folks, you clam up,shamelessly grovel and tapdance for Mr. Charlie sanging Mammy. How she pointed out she was biracial and came from Mormons as if that would make Mitt Romney and crew show mercy from the thrashing she would probably get from him tomorrow. And his comments with that little Parakeet wife of his will be shameless. It will be like the fake interview with Katie Couric on Real Husbands of Hollywood.

I’m going to say something about the Romney’s adopting that black child. I believe it was done as a cynical political ploy. This family doesn’t do SHIT for ACTUAL charitable good reasons or good faith. These people are ALL about bullshitting niceness and sincerity for TV media appearances. These delusional folks thought they were gonna win in 2012 and thought that since black folks in America would obviously be in a ginormous funk about the first African American President being defeated by a man whose religion considered us demons until 1978, that the way to salve that wound would not be to formulate policies that would benefit people of color, but to have a black grandchild to parade around news cameras to assure white folks that his policies would not really be bad for black folks, because hey BLACK GRANDSON, LOOK HERE! (Because really, thats who that really would be for. Most people of color would see right through that. Except of course, the ones who pine for white peoples seal of approval which now seems to include the aforementioned MHP) I feel bad for the kid, because one day, Kiernan is going to run up on some brothers who will let him know who he is, and that day will be when the Negro wake up call descends on him. Oh, it will happen. With the Romney’s raising him, it is damn impossible NOT to happen.

This whole spectacle of vituperative farce is amazing. Since that election loss in 2012, the media has been popping the Romney’s out like a fuckin Jack In The Box. Just trying and pining to make us realize we made a mistake in 2012 and that these folks should be in there. And really, look at the evidence. The news media saying Barack Obama is unpopular, Barack Obama’s Presidency is over, Barack Obama would lose in a do over election, No one likes Barack Obama, Barack Obama had a bad year, Barack Obama lost the debate and somehow that was bad even though he WON!!!!, Ann Romney is giving Michelle Obama a run for her money in the red dress she wore at her convention, ALL THE BULLSHIT!!!!! And instead of Melissa Harris Perry standing firm and true for the Angela Davis, raise a solid fist principles she supposedly embodies, she caved to pressure from Mr. Charlie and unnecessarily apologized for shit she was absolutely correct on. She doesn’t care about progressive and liberal principles, she cares about her paycheck and livelihood which I guarantee she wouldn’t have if she went back to Tulane.

This is why I am not one of the ones calling for more black voices on news and television. I’m sorry, I’m not for putting more black folks in the anchors chair if all they are is a mouthpiece for white corporate words, Liberal or Conservative. I don’t want it. Don Lemon is a perfect example of this. I would have thought a Black, Gay mid forty year old man would have more self respect than what he is shown. But he is as attention whorish as Miley Cyrus and Snooki. I read his ass when he tried to “George Michael” Jonah Hill in the men’s room.

    http://articles.latimes.com/2012/nov/09/entertainment/la-et-st-don-lemon-jonah-hill-twitter-fight-20121109

I don’t want him representing me on television and I highly doubt the LGBT community is embracing him with open arms either. If this is what it means to have black voices on television, then damnit silence me.

I’m not here for this, “We need voices like her’s on television.” I don’t want to hear that rancid shit. Television didn’t win Barack Obama the 2008 or 2012 elections, WE DID!!!! It was us. Stop putting stock in these personalities that are not there for us, but for themselves. Melissa Harris Perry is getting her Negro Wake Up Call and we all need to just let it happen for her sake and ours.

    End Rant.

Folks, I am sorry. I have had this in me for the last couple of months and it just came out. I just got a new job as a paralegal and I have been busy ingraining myself with the knowledge to do the job perfectly. College and a paralegal program teaches you alot, but it doesn’t condition you to do the job they want you to do. So, thats where I have been. However, now that my probationary period is up and I will be receiving my benefits package, I will be here a lot more.

I was reading the comments on TPM about Gallup’s tracking poll showing President Obama’s slide in 2013, and I noticed that the emo liberals are out in full force. Calling the president a republican, corporatist, blah, blah, blah. I noticed that the emo liberals get excited when they think the President is near his demise just like the right wingers.

    • Alma98

They’re going to do the same thing to De Blasio just watch and see.

      • jziglar

Yep. They will say that he betrayed progressive values before the month is over.

    • crazycanuck

When are they going to realize this President is not here for polls (which I don’t believe anyway) but to get the job done.

    • TresL

They act like: 1. He’s running for re-election and 2. Gallup is accurate.

      • GOVCHRIS1988

Exactly. Do they not remember 2012, when they basically said Romney was a point ahead and could take the election? Why do they think we would believe them now?

      • conlakappa

And 3. Like he has ever had any Fs to give. This is the man who said he could live with not being re-elected. This is all about making him toxic to weak-willed Ds who don’t want him campaigning for them.

    – – – -Octavia Spencer (‘Fruitvale Station’) Back in the Oscar Race – —

    – – – —*After almost passing up on the movie, Octavia Spencer gave a performance in “Fruitvale Station” that been receiving Oscar buzz.

The film tells the true story of Oscar Grant, an unarmed black man fatally shot by a white police officer in an Oakland, Calif., train station early on New Year’s Day, 2009. The officer was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and served 11 months in prison.

The shooting was caught on video and circulated widely via social networks. “Fruitvale’s” opening minutes feature a snippet of the video, the same footage that made Spencer pass on the pivotal role as Grant’s mother.

“In seeing the video, I said the only thing that I could offer this role is anger. And I think this situation requires much more than that because it already has a potential to be explosive,” said Spencer. But she read the script — which chronicles Grant’s last day — and was moved.

    – – – -At Detroit’s Downtown Boxing Gym, kids find athletic and academic success – —

    – – –On a cold December day in East Detroit, a dozen kids form a human assembly line stretching across the parking lot of the Downtown Boxing Gym.

With strong arms, the kids grab and push boxes of food from the delivery truck.

“The kids don’t go without a meal,” Coach Khali Sweeney told NBC News. “Forgotten Harvest, the local food bank, they’ll bring food here for ‘em, so we have food for the kids to eat healthy.”

According to a 2010 report, more than half of the city’s households with children under 18 receive food assistance from the state.

But that food is just one of the reasons the kids depend on this gym, which is the only building left standing on its city block.
