Saturday Afternoon Thread: West Wing Week 5/11/12

This week, the President traveled to Virginia and New York to urge Congress not to let interest rates double on student loans and to introduce a to-do list for Congress. He also hosted the University of Kentucky Wildcats, the Fermi Science award winners, and this year’s Gershwin Award Winners.

        • Miranda

Hey, I kinda like that look! Is this what Capehart was talking about earlier, I only caught a little bit but he was asking why somebody was wearing “that brown suit”.

Its not like PBO went to the J Anthony Brown/Steve Harvey suit collection….now if he comes out with a yellow suit and matching gators, then there’s a problem..but FLOTUS would NEVA let him come out like that. LOL

          • crazycanuck

I think he looks great, and No Michelle would never let him out like that lol

          • Admiral_Komack

I don’t think HE would let himself go out in public looking like a fool.

          • Alma98

Reminds me of the one suit he wore during a panel discussion w/ Suzanne Malveaux before the ’08 election. Heck, I prefer brown/tan/earthy colors over the usual navy/black as far as suits/business attire are concerned.

  • crazycanuck

Ok wait a Mo. John Travolta, downlow. WTH is that all bout GN SPILL, I just saw your tweet.

    • Alma98

I saw something about him being sued on yahoo yesterday.

2 different male masseuses(sp?) are suing him for sexual assault

      • crazycanuck

Wow, hasn’t that kind of stuff dog him for quite awhile? I wonder if it’s true?

        • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

For years, there have been rumors about Travolta being gay.

        • Aquagranny911

I don’t know but I read one has already been thrown out because Travolta wasn’t even in the same city at the same time this was supposed to have happened. So then lawyer went out & found another guy who said it happened when Travolta was in Atlanta.

I think Travolta is kind of weird with that Scientology & all but I did like him in Saturday Night Fever & True Colors.

    • danadevin74

Yes those rumors have been going on for years
But since the death of his son he just doesn’t seem to care if people know now.

Twitter users given legal warning in Britain

The Internet is not a law-free zone, the government’s top law officer warned Twitter users, adding that he would not hesitate to take action over offending posts.

Attorney General Dominic Grieve, the government’s chief legal advisor in England and Wales, spoke out following a series of high-profile court cases involving postings made on the micro-blogging site.

“If somebody goes down to the pub with printed sheets of paper and hands it out, that’s no different than if somebody goes and does a tweet,” Grieve told BBC radio.

“The idea that you have immunity because you’re an anonymous tweeter is a big mistake.

“I don’t want to take action but if I think it is necessary to prevent crime, such as racially aggravated harassment, then I won’t hesitate to do it.”

    — –Mitt Romney’s Support Of Same-Sex Adoption Lasts One Day – —

    – – – -Among Mitt Romney’s timid responses this week after President Obama’s endorsement of marriage equality was an admission that he was “fine” with same-sex couples adopting children, saying, “that’s something that people have a right to do.” But by Friday afternoon, he was already backing away from that position, suggesting that he merely “acknowledges” that many states offer same-sex adoption:

ROMNEY: Actually, I think all states but one allow gay adoption. So that’s a position which has been decided by most of the state legislatures, including the one in my state some time ago. So I simply acknowledge the fact that gay adoption is legal in all states but one.

    – – — -bHey kids! Tomorrow is Media Bias Sunday! Or as I like to call it, Librul Media My Ass Sunday.

Let’s take a sneak preview of what’s coming up on the Big Sunday Talker Line-Up, per The Seattle Times, okay? Okay.

This is not a complete list; Paddy provides that to you tomorrow. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if the lists include panel members, so bear with me if sometimes those commentators are included… or not. I try not to because panels usually include mostly Republicans, and if there are “Democrats,” they’re about as “liberal” as, well, Harold Ford. – ———-lol.

And as you may have noticed, ClusterFox is not included, because, well come on, what’s the point?

This week, I suspect a couple of the party affiliations will be irrelevant given that the topic will be marriage equality. For example, Ted Olson, a Republican, is fighting for it.

ABC’s “This Week” – Barney Frank (D); Marsha Blackburn (R); Ralph Reed (R); Hilary Rosen (D).

NBC’s “Meet the Press” -Carl Levin (D); Reince Priebus (R); Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase (D- Barely).

CBS’ “Face the Nation” – Mike Rogers (R); Deval Patrick (D); Evan Wolfson (D); Ted Olson (R); Mark McKinnon (R); Clay Aiken (D); Ralph Reed (R).

CNN’s “State of the Union” – Dick Durbin (D); John Cornyn (R); Joe Lieberman (virtual R, but I); Rep. Peter King (R); Gov. John Hickenlooper (D); Tony Perkins (R); Gary Bauer (R)

It’s time to do the math:

Red Rs + Red Rs, carry the pi, divided by D, times Bias, minus even-handedness… calculating…

Total: 11 (12 if you count Lieberman) Rs, 9 (8 if you don’t count Dimon) Ds. Please feel free to check the addition and political affiliations</iT

NBC’s David Gregory To Headline Conference For Major Republican Advocacy Group

By Josh Israel on May 12, 2012 at 3:00 pm

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), which calls itself “the voice of small business,” is one of the Republican party’s strongest allies. The group spent over $1 million on outside ads in the 2010 campaign — all of it backing Republican House and Senate candidates (and, Bloomberg News reported last month, “another $1.5 million that it kept hidden and said was exempt” from disclosure requirements). The group is the lead plaintiff in the lawsuit against the Obamacare law and bankrolled state governments’ challenges to the law. The NFIB has also taken stances against allowing the EPA to regulate greenhouse gases, opposing regulations on businesses, and supporting curtailing union rights.

Given the group’s obvious Republican alliance, it comes as little surprise that the NFIB’s three-day 2012 Small Business Summit, which begins Monday, will feature headliners Karl Rove and House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH).

But the first name and photo on the invitation for the $150-per-person event — Tuesday’s “keynote address” speaker — is NBC’s Meet the Press host David Gregory. He is marketed by NBC as an anchor and “trusted journalist.”

JPMorgan losses a headache for Romney?

JPMorgan lost $2bn (£1.2bn), and its outspoken chairman Jamie Dimon has lost some political credibility. He’s been at the forefront of the argument against the Obama administration’s attempt to bring in tighter financial regulation.

In particular he’s trying to fight off the “Volcker rule”, named after Paul Volcker, the former chairman of the Federal Reserve. It stops banks from investing in hedge funds.

Mr Dimon was winning. Now his company’s huge losses strengthen the hand of those arguing in favour of the new regulations and leaves Mr Dimon looking slightly foolish, although some say the Volcker rule wouldn’t have had any impact in this case.

President Obama crushed Romney, 49% to 38% in this quarter’s global investor poll. Within the same margin 49-38%, global investors believe more in Obama’s vision for the U.S.economy also.

    - –

    – – — -President Barack Obama is ahead of presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney among Michigan voters in the race for president, a new poll shows, and is leading in part because of strong support among women.

Obama was leading 45.1 percent to 39.5 percent in the Glengariff Group Inc. poll, with 15.4 percent undecided; the margin of error is 4 percentage points.

    – –Obama enjoys far stronger support among women, leading Romney 47.3 percent to 35 percent, while being nearly tied with Romney among men, 43.8 to 43.1 percent. The results pose a potential “gender gap” problem for Romney, pollster Richard Czuba said Friday. The Republican needs to be wary of that margin, he added.

“Barack Obama, if he wins, will win it on the women’s vote,” Czuba said. “I think, for the Romney campaign, that is the issue now, making headway with the gender gap.”

Congressman Joe Walsh (IL-08) tonight soundly lost the first debate to strong Democratic challenger Tammy Duckworth. Walsh simply could not defend the indefensible: Congressman Walsh is a deadbeat on jobs who voted for an irresponsible budget that protected tax breaks for billionaires and Big Oil while ending Medicare and making seniors pay $6,000 for the same health care. Obama told the story of the four students who sat at a Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C., and demanded service, spurring a movement that spread to thousands.

“It all started because a small group of young people had their eyes open to the injustices around them,” she said. “It all started because they decided, as one of the four told the newspaper on the first day of the protests, that it was ‘time for someone to wake up and change the situation.’ And that, more than anything else, is the story of our nation’s progress right from the very beginning.”

I’m not going to get in the gay marriage wars on TOD and Twitter I’m still getting my schadenfraude on with the Log Cabin Repubs looking salty that PBO supports ssm which makes them look dumb and Jamie Dimon, after calling PBO all sorts of names for the Dodd-Frank looking a complete fool with JP Morgan Chase losing $2 billion dollars on a derivatives bet in 2012. I mean, you let your head man in London bet $2 billion in derivatives…every fool in the US knows derivatives are the devil and this is what got y’all caught out there!

    • gc

Reviewed that mess today. (I’m on school vacay, no time or much next week)

I DID look into it,because i do not like being disappointed in people. I wanted to understad. What I’m getting is that TOD is positing a general “THEY” are trying to divide us meme. The blog is ignoring the fact that any correlation between SSM issue and AA’s was researched and debunked after prop 8. The truth is out there – AA are not the perps here (an inconvenient truth??) and that people (read: BWD in particular) will not address what is really going down, take no personal responsibility for looking into their own souls, but will jump on the vague, amorphous THEY are trying to divide us. That may be a piece of it,but there is much more. And the “divisions” are often well in place and ongoing.

    • Miranda

I listened to the Exec Director of the Log Cabin Reporters on NPR Friday and it was hilarious how the host Michelle Martin and this black conservative had to literally keep themselves from completely laughing him off as he tried to explain their crazy statement about PBO’s stance.

      • JojoRaze

I’m a Tell Me More w/ Michelle martin stan and I haven’t listened to all of Friday’s podcast yet…so I’m looking forward to that interview. I like MM because she’s a great interviewer and she plays Devil’s Advocate well. You really don’t know her bias at all when she asks questions. So, if she was fitting to laugh at the Log Cabin guy, he must have been uber-ridiculous with his answers.

I don’t support ssm, but the log cabin guys have me *dead*. It’s like chickens for KFC. They just need to come out and admit–I’m more scared of that socialist Obama taking my money than for my own life with the Repubs wanting to stone me if they could.

        • rikyrah

          they really are pitiful.

          • JojoRaze

Finished listening to the podcast and Michelle told dude, after reading the LCR statement and him speaking on her show, “You must be in advanced yoga” for all the contortions he was pulling to try and downgrade PBO for his ssm statement. *Dead* Never heard her call people out like that before even in the barbershop segment. Michelle Martin almost always lets people talk and explain themselves and you figure it out your self.

She interviewed several times the guy who wrote SB 1070, Kris Kobach, and her approach really lets you see in the dude’s head. Her comment on Log Cabin Repubs though, had me in tears. LCR dude is also an Army reservist. I’m sure he couldn’t say that before until the end of DADT, which PBO signed and advocated for. The LCR people are just pitiful.

        • Miranda

Oh I LOVE Michelle Martin! LOVE LOVE LOVE her interviews because she is so good at allowing people to fully answer the question and you get to her some of the idiocy for yourself unfiltered! Like the guy you mentioned below that wrote SB1070 – after that interview I was heated – and there was another interview – I cant remember his name right now – but he basically said that yes, wealthier people should have more of a say in elections. Oh…the guy that was behind the Citizens United case! Michelle let him say his piece and asked all the question I was thinking. She is the best.

Both TOD and POU are my daily staple diet and the great thing is I kinda know what to expect, when I arrive at the said destinations, because the blogsters and family of commenters have revealed their thoughts many a time in their manner of delivery- some over-anxious,some funny, some are poll freaks, some curse, some wise, some straight- up,some play devil’s advocate, etc (you get my drift), but on the whole, I appreciate the sentiments.
I will further add that I look forward each and every day to the interpretations of both sites. However, having read the many and varied passionate responses on the BWD/Chips controversy, I have dug deeper and come to the conclusion that the key to this is …perspective.
An “Of Colour’ person’s perspective is very, very different from a white person’s perspective, in that the cultural rhythm and socialisation is key to response and re-action. Whites issues are totally different from ‘of colour’ ones on a ranking scale, therefore, it is difficult for them to comprehend the nature of sensitivity, objection, and the residual scars that are set off, to casual statements that can be considered offensive. The fact is that whilst whites are absorbed with this whole gay acceptance and same-sex marriage predicament, ‘of colour’ folk, however compassionate or in agreement, because of still struggling with the other dominant issues of inequality, injustices, racism and acceptance in their own country, that is, American world, just have not placed great emphasis on this matter. (case in point- accusations are rife about homophobia and the blacks’ stance).
For me, gays, blacks, minorities should not be in the same underdog sentence, as even though they are all persons, one is a sexual preference and the other, still into the 21st century I might add, has to deal with the inhumanity and indignity of treatment vetted out by bigotry and prejudice.
I am happy though, that through it all, people are not holding back, and are challenging each other in the realm of agreement/disagreement, to further extend the conversation, as well as getting a chance to reflect, and face themselves and others with more understanding and respect.
    Onward,forward into 4 more years!!
