Despite defeat, Boehner’s grip on Speaker’s gavel appears secure

By Russell Berman and Molly K. Hooper – 12/21/12 05:34 PM ET

John Boehner’s grip on the Speaker’s gavel appears to be secure, despite a personally embarrassing and politically damaging defeat Thursday at the hands of his fellow Republicans.

The House Republican conference refused to deliver the votes to pass the Ohio lawmaker’s “Plan B” tax bill to prevent much of the fiscal cliff, sapping the Speaker of leverage in the climactic days of his year-end negotiations with President Obama and Democratic leaders.

One conservative House Republican, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the only way Boehner’s position is likely to be in serious jeopardy is if he agrees to raise the debt ceiling in a fiscal-cliff deal with Obama without significant concessions on spending cuts and entitlement reform from the president.

“If he gives away the debt ceiling, he’s in trouble,” the member said.

This is not a complete list; Paddy provides that to you tomorrow. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if the lists include panel members, so bear with me if sometimes those commentators are included… or not. I try not to because panels usually include mostly Republicans, and if there are “Democrats,” they’re about as “liberal” as, well, Harold Ford.

And as you may have noticed, ClusterFox is not included, because, well come on, what’s the point?

ABC’s “This Week”– Sen. Johnny Isakson (R); Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D); NRA’s Asa Hutchinson (R); Sarah Brady, Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence (no longer R, maybe I?); Mayor Cory Booker (D); Grover Norquist (R).

    NBC’s “Meet the Press”– Wayne LaPierre, NRA CEO (R); Sen. Chuck Schumer (D);
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R); Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R).

CBS’ “Face the Nation”– NRA president David Keene (R); Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R); Sen. Mark Warner (D); Rep. Tim Scott (R); actor Ben Affleck (D).

CNN’s “State of the Union”–Sen. Joe Lieberman (I); Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R); Rep. Steve LaTourette (R); Asa Hutchinson (R).

    POU FAM♥- – – – -GOOD –“VOTE-COUNT NEWS” – – -BUT. . . . .

    – — Democratic House Candidates Now Have A Nearly 1.2 Million Vote Lead Over The Republicans – – –

    – — – – –The day after the election last month, ThinkProgress took a preliminary tally of the total number of votes cast for candidates for the House of Representatives. We found that, despite the fact that Republicans won a commanding majority of the seats, the American people cast more than half-a-million votes for Democrats. This number was based on early tallies, however, and it was especially likely to undercount many West Coast states that had less time to count ballots.

More than a month after the election, the Democrats’ popular vote lead expanded significantly. Based on current tallies, Democrats now lead Republicans 59,343,447 to 58,178,393 in total votes cast for their House candidates — meaning that the American people preferred Democrats over Republicans by nearly a full percentage point of the total vote. Yet, despite clearly losing the popular vote, Republicans will control nearly 54 percent of the seats in the House in the 113th Congress.

This disparity between the will of the American people and the actual outcome of the election did not happen by accident — it is largely the product of massive gerrymandering by Republican state officials. President Obama won Pennsylvania by more than 5 points, but Democrats carried only 5 of the state’s 18 congressional seats. – – -SNIP —

    — — –John Dickerson notes Republicans had two major setbacks in rapid succession: Speaker John Boehner’s failed “Plan B” to avert the fiscal cliff and the NRA’s embarrassing press conference.

“The Republican Party is in a rebuilding mode after its 2012 election loss. These two events–a defiant NRA and an incompetent leadership–cannot be the face of confrontation the GOP wants to show the public on high-profile issues. Tea Party activists and gun owners are a key part of the party base. But these public acts are out of sync with the moment and completely at odds with party’s need to widen its membership.”

    Happy Holidays POU

I’ve been catching up on my reading. Read Barack Obama the story by Maraniss. It wasn’t bad. I appreciated the history lesson of his family. My only beef would be the occasional asides pointing to “discrepencies” in Dreams from My Father and Maraniss’ research. And the extended chapter on his time with Genevive (sp?) Cook in New York. But I suppose that was the only way to get a read on his activities at the time. I guess. Otherwise an interesting read.

Now I’m reading Dreams of My Father and keep coming across things that match the double standards now:

    p. 146

“Vrdolyak and the rest of them [white folks] don’t know when to quit.” the man with the newspaper said, shaking his head in disgust. “When Old Man Daley was mayor, didn’t nobody say nothing about him putting all them Irish up in City Hall. But the minute Harold tries to hire some black people, just to even things out, they call it reverse racism–”

“Man, that’s how it always is. Whenever a black man gets into power, they gonna try and change the rules on him.”

“Worse part is, newspapers acting like it was black folks that started this whole mess.”
