Ga. woman arrested for spanking customer’s child

WRIGHTSVILLE, Ga. — A dollar store employee has been arrested for simple battery after whipping a customer’s child with a belt.

WMAZ-TV (http://on.wmaz.com/WGbiFw ) reports surveillance cameras inside a Wrightsville dollar store recorded an 8-year-old boy running around the store and eventually throwing a cookie jar at 39-year-old Emilia Graciela Bell.

Authorities say Bell took off her belt, chased the boy down and spanked him behind the counter.

The boy’s father called police and Bell was taken into custody. Police said she was free on bond Friday.

I’m torn. I don’t believe in corporal punishment, but this child was cuttin’ up for real.

I could support a belt whuppin’ for the father…

      • Tafr

WW I hear ya because if a stranger put a hand on my kid I would go off. However, the mother took that gamble when she allowed her child to run unsupervised. I am no model parent, I could write an essay on the mistakes I have made and will continue to make, kids do not come with a manual. I have found that the one mistake that I have not made is making sure my children are safe. So while the father is mad that his child got a whooping I have to wonder if he was just as pissed at the mother for allowing the child to run unsupervised resulting in an ass whooping from a stranger. Seriously some parents do not give a damn until something like this happens.

Co-sign. Whoever failed to teach this child should face consequences.

    • Tafr

She should of never put her hands on the kid. I am not saying she is wrong cause he clearly deserved an ass whooping but she has set herself up for some legal issues. She should of took the brat by his arms, went to the manager, and have the parents banned from the store.

Also if they are going to charge this woman with battery then how about charging the so called care givers with neglect. How the hell you gonna allow an eight year old kid to run around unsupervised. That well deserved ass whooping he got is nothing because he could of been molested, kidnapped, and killed. I guess some parents take that type of danger for granted. I bet that ass whopping was the first time the little brat got a taste of any type of discipline. I wish one of my girls would pull some crap like that.

Report: Booker Canceled Interview When Criticisms Were Broached
Tom Kludt 1:51 PM EST, Saturday February 2, 2013

Newark, N.J. Mayor Cory Booker (D) abruptly backed out of a recent interview after being asked about criticism he’s drawn over the launch of his U.S. Senate campaign, according to a report published Saturday in The Star-Ledger of Newark.

    From the Star-Ledger:

Booker initially agreed to be interviewed by POLITICO, rescheduled twice, then canceled 20 minutes after a reporter asked for comment on criticisms he had received from a prominent New Jersey Democrat about how he’s handled his campaign rollout.

I am having a hard time finding a clip of Harry Belafonte’s speech. I did find a clip on you tube, it was uploaded by someone who taped it. I am also finding it hard to find articles written about his comments. Wonder why??????
He was 100% correct. Those who read and comment on this blog have asked the same questions. I am curious how much media attention his comments will receive. He was “lecturing” to Black people, can’t wait for the sole patrol to object.

    • goldenstar

You may want to try this audio of his address at Northwestern University commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday. He asked where is our radical voice at this event.

His remarks were very similar to the Image Awards.

He didn’t call out PBO so the media won’t pay attention. However, the Sole Patrol might be mad about that and turn on him.

    • JojoRaze

Did Harry B basically ask why we as blk people asking PBO to be radical when we ourselves aren’t doing anything radical?

U twitter warriors get ready. I find this article interesting.

Introducing the TVNewser Twitter index, where we take a look at how TV news programs are ranking on that other real-time medium, Twitter.

This week: the most-followed broadcast network morning shows and evening news programs. Next week we look at the primetime cable news landscape and in future weeks we will catch you up on the primetime broadcast shows, and the top TV news talent.

The data on the primetime cable shows should be interesting.

It will show what we already know is true. The only people watching Fox News don’t know what twitter is.

Some people are gonna get their feelings hurt. I hope this turns into a more accurate Nielsen rating.

‘Scandal': The plot point you will never see
    by Lynette Rice

The Scandal you see now on ABC is not the Scandal that Executive Producer Shonda Rhimes originally had in mind for ABC.

When Rhimes was developing the drama that’s become a hit for ABC, she had a much different story line in mind for her heroine – a plan that even star Kerry Washington didn’t know about before accepting the role of Olivia Pope. In an interview with EW, Rhimes and Washington chatted about the plot point that was ultimately abandoned in an effort to turn the story of real-life political fixer Judy Smith into a juicy drama for primetime.

Rhimes: “I couldn’t write Judy Smith as the character, mainly because Judy’s life is so confidential. I didn’t start writing until I knew what the pilot was and I knew what the pilot was when I knew she was sleeping with the President.” [Rhimes turns to Washington]. ”Originally the president was her father and it was much less interesting.”

    Washington: “Oh wow.”

    • Miranda

WOW! I bet originally ABC was kinda scared to go with a black woman as the lead in a drama, hence the “President was her father” bit.

    • nellcote

wait. so she’s sleeping with her father, the president?

      • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

No… Originally, Shonda Rhimes was going to make Olivia Pope the daughter of the president.

    — -Ghana’s Grace Amey-Obeng Makes Millions Fighting Skin Bleaching – —

    – —Ghana’s Grace Amey-Obeng, one of West Africa’s most successful businesswomen, made her fortune promoting products which emphasised the beauty of the black skin, at a time when many of her competitors were selling dangerous skin-bleaching formulas.

The business empire she started a quarter of a century ago with around $100 (£63) now has an annual turnover of between $8m and $10m. Her FC Group of Companies – which includes a beauty clinic, a firm that supplies salon equipment and cosmetics, and a college – has eight branches in Ghana and exports to Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Togo, Ivory Coast, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Mrs Amey-Obeng has won dozens of accolades and industry awards for her skincare beauty products and marketing. But one of the things that make her especially proud is her FC Beauty College which, since its opening in 1999, has trained more than 5,000 young people, mostly women.

“It’s like a family bond. I’m so proud that they have managed to go through the programme,” she told the BBC’s series African Dream.

Equally important to her is her role as a medical aesthetician and she cites seeing a skin condition resolved as something that gives her “joy”.

“I’m so happy that God has given me that talent and that touch to heal people,” she said.

    – – -Ohio Art Co. says Etch A Sketch inventor Andre Cassagnes dies near Paris – —

    – – – -Andre Cassagnes, the inventor of the Etch A Sketch toy that generations of children drew on, shook up and started over, has died in France, the toy’s maker said.

Cassagnes died Jan. 16 in a Paris suburb at age 86, said the Ohio Art Co., based in Bryan in northwest Ohio. The cause wasn’t disclosed Saturday.
    – – – -SNIP – —
Though passed over in popularity for video games and gadgets, the toy has a steady market, the company has said. It got a big jump in sales after Etch A Sketch was featured in the first two “Toy Story” movies, and Ohio Art capitalized on a much-publicized gaffe by a Mitt Romney aide during last year’s presidential election, who was asked about his candidate’s views during the primary season versus the general election.

He likened the campaign to an Etch A Sketch: “You can kind of shake it up and we start all over again.”

    — – – -As the police standoff with an Alabama man accused of holding a 5-year-old boy hostage continued Saturday, a nearby community prepared to bury the beloved bus driver who was shot to death trying to protect children on his bus when the episode began days earlier.

Charles Albert Poland Jr., 66, who was known around town as Chuck, was described by folks in his hometown of Newton as a humble hero. Hundreds of people attended a viewing service for Poland on Saturday evening. His funeral was set for Sunday afternoon.

“I believe that if he had to do it all over again tomorrow, he would,” said Poland’s sister-in-law, Lavern Skipper, earlier Saturday. “He would do it for those children.”

Authorities said Jim Lee Dykes boarded a stopped school bus filled with 21 children Tuesday afternoon and demanded two boys between 6 and 8 years old. When Poland tried to block his way, the gunman shot him several times and abducted a 5-year-old boy — who police say remains in an underground bunker with Dykes.

Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson said in a briefing with reporters Saturday that Dykes has told them he has blankets and an electric heater in the bunker, which is located on his rural property. Authorities have been conferring in a nearby church and communicating with Dykes through a ventilation pipe to the underground bunker.

Olson also said Dykes has allowed police to deliver coloring books, medication and toys for the boy.

    – – -University of Southern Miss Nears Hire of First Black President – – —

    – – – —The University of Southern Mississippi is on the verge of creating history by possibly hiring Rodney Bennett as their first black president, reports USA Today.

It’s a fact not lost on Southern Miss interim President Aubrey K. Lucas, whose service to the school dates to a period when black students were not even admitted to the university.

“It’s been 54 years ago since this university denied admission to Clyde Kennard,” the school’s first black applicant, said Lucas, who served as director of admissions from 1957-61. “The difference that we can see in those 54 years — that difference is unbelievable. There’s been great change in this state. We have to be proud of that progress.”

The state College Board announced during a brief new conference Friday afternoon that Bennett, currently the University of Georgia’s vice president for student affairs, is the preferred candidate for the Southern Miss job./b>
