5 reasons we can never let Mitt Romney become President of the United States

have only one prediction about the rest of 2012: It will be confusing.

827,000 private sector jobs have already been created since January 1, 2012. And apparently, we’re supposed to believe this is bad—compared to the 600,000+ were we losing a month when the President took office. Mitt Romney says he’d be creating 500,000 jobs a month. And the only President to ever do that for more than one month was Mitt Romney’s new hero — Jimmy Carter.

But there is some seriously bad news we have to deal with or we’ll be hoping the Mayans were right: voter registration is down among Hispanics and blacks, core parts of any winning Democratic coalition.

So first and foremost, register that ass to vote. THEN tell a friend to do the same and pass it on.

Republicans know they only win if you don’t vote, so they’re making it harder to vote than it is to buy a gun. Online registration is our best way around this.

So why does this election matter? I’ll boil it down to some essentials.

    1. As President, Mitt Romney will pick at least two Supreme Court Justices.
The Ginny Thomas Court has already thrown out campaign finance sanity and seems about to crush America’s best hope for universal health care. In the next few years, this same court will likely decide on abortion rights, gay marriage, endless digital privacy issues and more. Romney will appoint Justices as bad or worse than Bush’s choices — Roberts and Alito? Why? Because he’ll have to.

    2. Mitt Romney will have to be more extreme than George W. Bush to avoid a primary challenge in 2016.
This week Mitt Romney’s campaign accepted the resignation openly gay spokesman, claiming the pressure from the religious right hounded him out. The self-described “yokel” behind that pressure, Bryan J. Fischer, then derided Mitt for buckling. “How will he stand up to North Korea?” The fact is Mitt will stand up to foreign nations in an overly aggressive way because he can’t stand up to his own base. George W. Bush never had to prove his conservative bona fides. Mitt will have to every day he’s in office. That’s why he’ll defund Planned Parenthood and roll back progress for gays and lesbians before the Bryan J. Fischers can even snap their fingers.

    3. Women will pay more for less health care, seniors will pay more for prescription medication and at least 45,000 Americans will die every year for lack of insurance.
Romney’s key pledge is to repeal ObamaCare. Bam. 30,000,000 Americans who won’t get health care, thousands of kids off their parents’ policies and kids once again denied coverage for pre-existing conditions. Then under the Ryan budget, millions more will lose their Medicaid and everyone on Medicare who is under 55 will pay more for their insurance. The Godfather of Obamacare has to overcompensate to prove he’s an actual Republican and the result will be agony and death for the most vulnerable Americans.

Every time President Obama and/or the First Lady have a stellar day, the national media concern trolls it, normally using the same complaints and themes issued by Republican rivals. They’ve been doing this for years and years. “If Obama walked on water, Bolton’d say he couldn’t swim”–Hillary Clinton, 2009

    – — Arizona Bans Funding to Planned Parenthood
Jan Brewer cuts off abortion providers from state money
    – —

    — -Gov. Jan Brewer yesterday signed into law a bill to cut off Planned Parenthood’s access to taxpayer money funneled through the state for non-abortion services. Arizona already bars use of public money for abortions except to save the life of the mother. But anti-abortion legislators and other supporters of the bill say the broader prohibition is needed to ensure no public money indirectly supports abortion services.

Planned Parenthood Arizona claims a funding ban would interrupt its preventive health care and family planning services for nearly 20,000 women served by the organization’s clinics. The organization says it will consider a legal challenge. (A similar law in Texas is in the same boat.)

Black farmers’ quest for justice draws to a close

(Reuters) – After decades of discrimination and years of legal wrangling, black American farmers are rushing to beat a May 11 deadline to file racial discrimination claims against the U.S. Department of Agriculture over its lending practices.

Many of them missed an earlier deadline to file claims for part of what has become a $1.25 billion settlement resulting from a 2008 federal farm bill and subsequent congressional action.

For those filing claims to shares of the settlement fund before the new May 11 deadline — as many as 40,000 farmers and their heirs — there is a sense of relief, if not of justice.

So seems like Obama was even more fired up in Virginia. I’m telling slicing Robmey up with a thousand ninja cuts.
(list from Dick Halperin, but a good place for quotes)

In Richmond, VA rally, POTUS praises Romney as “a patriotic American who has raised a wonderful family” before launching into extended takedown of his positions.
Says the ex-MA Guv and former CEO “has drawn the wrong lessons from those experiences.”

On the economy: “He sincerely believes that if CEOs and wealthy investors like him make money, the rest of us will automatically prosper as well…. The challenge we face right now — the challenge we faced for over a decade is that harder work hasn’t led to higher incomes. It’s that bigger profits haven’t led to better jobs.”

On corporations: “I don’t care how many ways you try to explain it: Corporations aren’t people. People are people.”

On Afghanistan: “My opponent said it was ‘tragic’ to end the war in Iraq. He said he won’t set a timeline for ending the war in Afghanistan. I have, and I intend to keep it. After a decade of war that’s cost us thousands of lives and over a trillion dollars, the nation we need to build is our own.”

On taxes: “My opponent won’t tell us how he’d pay for his new, $5 trillion tax cut — a tax cut that gives an average of $250,000 to every millionaire in this country.”

On DADT: “We’re not returning to the days when you could be kicked out of the United States military just because of who you are or who you love. That would be wrong for our national security, and it would be a betrayal of our values.”

On immigration: “It’s time to stop denying citizenship to responsible young people just because they’re the children of undocumented immigrants.”

    ALEC’s Secrets Revealed; Corporations Flee

On May 11, 2012, about 20 state legislators from 15 oil- and gas-rich states are scheduled to meet in a hotel conference room in Charlotte. Representatives from major energy companies will be there, too. Oil and gas lobbying groups will give presentations to the lawmakers on fossil fuel prices and the need for modernizing the nation’s power grid. But no “lobbying” will take place. What happens in Charlotte will be called education.

For three decades, the American Legislative Exchange Council, the meeting’s host, has brought together corporations (including Pfizer (PFE), AT&T (T), and ExxonMobil (XOM)) and state legislators to write what it calls model bills—pieces of legislation the industries would like to become law. Often this means protecting favored tax treatment or keeping regulations at bay. ALEC has also approved model bills on social issues, including gun control and voter registration. The bills then get passed around among the 1,800 mostly Republican legislators who are ALEC members. They introduce the model bills about 1,000 times a year in state capitols around the country, the group says. About 200 become law. ALEC pays for the meetings through membership fees (called donations) that corporations pay. The legislators receive travel stipends (called scholarships) to attend the meetings. ALEC is registered with the IRS as a nonprofit that provides a public service, not as a lobbyist that seeks to influence.

This offers two benefits: Corporate members can deduct yearly dues, which run up to $25,000—more if they want to sponsor meetings; and ALEC doesn’t have to disclose the names of legislators and executives who attend. That’s important, because if ALEC operated with complete openness it would have difficulty operating at all. ALEC has attracted a wide and wealthy range of supporters in part because it’s done its work behind closed doors. Membership lists were secret. The origins of the model bills were secret. Part of ALEC’s mission is to present industry-backed legislation as grass-roots work. If this were to become clear to everyone, there’d be no reason for corporations to use it.

Unfortunately for ALEC, that’s exactly what’s happening. Last year, government accountability group Common Cause successfully filed Freedom of Information Act requests with state legislators to learn more about their dealings with ALEC. At the same time, someone leaked ALEC’s internal bill library. All told, thousands of pages of internal ALEC documents were put online, including minutes and attendee lists for the last two years of meetings.

ColorofChange.org, a civil rights group, discovered in ALEC’s now-public library a model bill for voter ID laws passed by 34 states. The laws’ opponents say they suppress voting by minorities. In December the group began sending letters to ALEC’s corporate members asking how much they valued their minority customers. Since then McDonald’s (MCD), Wendy’s (WEN), Coca-Cola (KO), PepsiCo (PEP), Yum! Brands (YUM), Procter & Gamble (PG), and Intuit (INTU), among others, have stopped donating to ALEC. The corporate departures accelerated after the death of Trayvon Martin: Florida’s so-called stand-your-ground law also sits in ALEC’s model bill library.

a report from the Virginia rally at TOD:

    PoliticalJunkessa
    May 5, 2012 at 9:42 pm

Okay, TOD Family. Here’s my account of today’s rally in Richmond, Virginia. I’ll repost in case Chips changes threads….

I arrived at the VCU Siegel Center at just after 12 noon. There was already a sizable, but not discouragingly so, crowd of people waiting in neat lines. The weather was very warm, however the cloud cover made it bearable. Thankfully, the first rain drops didn’t fall until *just* as we were entering the building — about 2:45pm.

There were all kinds of people on line — I met some great people, including a retired, African-American, female AirForce vet and a fulltime Tim Kaine staff member who had taken two semesters off to work for PBO in 2008 and was in Grant Park in Chicago on Election Night. People had on all kinds of Obama regalia: hats, t-shirts, buttons, totebags…and the energy was high. A marching band from Virginia State University played for us outside and they were GOOD! The crowd got their groove on. The Obama Campaign Staff and Event Volunteers kept everything orderly and organized — they handed out water and kept the lines neat. Except for one duo that *tried* to cut the line, but got told off by a fiesty woman who ran and got a cop to remove them, everything ran smoothly.

Once inside, I realized that having a so-called preferred ticket has it pluses and minuses. The plus was that I was seated earlier, and it was highly unlikely that I would have been turned away. The minus is that the preferred tickets were seated *behind* the speaking platform, probably because they want to make sure that these people(basically volunteers and staff) are the ones that are providing the backdrop for the President and other speakers. So, yeah, the general admission seats were actually the ones that faced the platform. Besides that, I was very happy with my seat — I wasn’t too far from that giant flag that was in one of the pics, which was hanging over the entrance into the stadium and runway that PBO used to access and leave the platform.

I don’t know what the controversy is about regarding whether it was a full house or not. The Siegel Center was full to capacity, but no more. The ONLY empty seats were the ones directly behind the press corp and behind a huge “FORWARD” sign. There were a lot of cameramen and photographers stationed in the seats directly facing the platform, and anybody who sat behind them would not be able to see a thing, as would anybody sitting behind that sign. I am 99% sure that there was a cut-off point where no more people were let into the building. This was probably for safety reasons. I remember the doors being closed and the traffic in stopping cold once the seats were full. Another silly non-troversy! Anyway…

VCU basketball coach and local hero, Shaka Smart, kicked off the program, Mayor Dwight Jones gave an awesome opening prayer, and the Boy Scouts lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Representative Bobby Scott said a few words. Former Mayor and Governor, and now candidate for Senate, Tim Kaine, was very impressive in his remarks — he has more gravitas and presence in person that what I have experienced from him on t.v. He is extremely supportive of the President, and he seems ready to run this race.

The program was kept moving by lots of music, and some of the great videos we’ve all seen here: Forward, Fired Up and Ready to Go (the lady from SC), I’m In, etc. People loved these videos and cheered them with gusto. We did the wave, we danced, we laughed. Things started getting buzzed when we saw the campaign photographers enter the building — I saw Pete Souza, at one point he was standing a few rows down from me! Then more Secret Service personnel came in, and a security dog sniffed around the area where the Presidet would enter. Anticipation was high.

Finally, around 5, we heard a voice simply say, “here to introduce the President of the United States, is the First Lady, Michelle Obama!” And the crowd went wild! She is even more beautiful and radiant in person. She is in absolutely tip-top shape and exudes a softness that come across even more in real life. It’s very magnetic. She spoke with no notes, no prompter, for about 10(?) minutes — extremely warm, heartfelt words about her background and how her story relates to all of ours as we’re trying to move forward in rebuilding the middle class and re-electing PBO. It is absolutely true what they say about Michelle — she is incredibly impressive on the stump. A fantastic aura, a strong yet warm voice, and an authenticity that can’t be faked. I can’t imagine a better partner for the President.

Then the main event! Michelle brought PBO on, and the crowd went even wilder! PBO swag-bounced his way in, megawatt smile in place, waving to the whole crowd on all sides. He looks healthy, strong, and energetic in person. Trim, but not skinny. Because I was facing the back of the speaking platform, I can confirm that, just like his wife, he is in incredible shape, and everything is quite proper. *ahem* You all have the video and transcript of the event, so I don’t need to give blow-by-blow of what he said. I will just you that he was clear and forceful in making his points and that the audience was hanging on his every word. PBO made it clear that the campaign would require lots of work from all of us from now to November and beyond. He was interrupted continuously by applause, Amens, “we’ve got your back!”, “I love you!” — the crowd was totally fired up from beginning to end and exploded into cheers when he gave his trademark closing “……God Bless the United States of America!”

Michelle joined him back on stage, and TOD, let me tell you, it is amazing to see them in each other’s space in person. We see still photos and snapshots of time, but truly, PBO’s face lights up when she comes into his space and they are extremely touch-feely in each other’s presence. It is a beautiful thing to see. He can’t keep his hands off her. Very warm, very loving, very genuine, very inspiring. They made their way to the floor and shook hands on the floor, from one side of the stage to the other. They eventually made it back over to my side where a funny thing happened. There was a man in my section who had the cutest, chunkiest baby girl. I don’t know how in the world he got to where he did, but he got PBO (who had already passed him on his way out) to backtrack and do his baby-whispering thing with the cutiepie, get a picture, and hand the baby back. It was adorable.

There was lots of love and positive energy in the building. If you can at all get to a live event, I highly suggest you go. It puts you in a totally different frame of mind than the rut we get into looking at the talking heads, reading toxic internet sites, listening to poisonous lies. No, a rally is not the election. However, it is a reminder of the higher potentiality, the love, the joy that is accessible to all of us. These 8,000 or so people who showed up today know thousands of other people, and they know thousands of others, and so on and so on. It is a seed that will bear fruit, I’m convinced, and will help keep Virginia blue and keep this country moving forward.

Sorry for the length. Feel free to ask me any questions :-) ….

    • crazycanuck

Wow, thanks rikyrah. Man, I’m so envious of you guys. I wish could see them live. I love what she said about the Pres and Michelle in each other space.

I didn’t see all that other stuff though, before Michelle took the stage. Just remember seein some white guy talking, was that Kaine? Wasn’t he saying some crap stuff about the Pres during the first election? or am i getting him mixed up with someone else? Also I remember that Shaka name, I think Miranda posted a pic of him and his wife here once, is that the same guy?

    – – -Who says size doesn’t matter? – —

    — – -Livewire has a great post contrasting the Obama and Romney campaigns. Here’s a teaser with a few direct quotes:

Size: At the first rally, in Ohio, President Obama and the First Lady attracted 14,000 supporters. There were about 18,000 total seats. Then a little later, in Virginia, 8,000 packed VCU, which was a capacity crowd. Per Livewire, “both crowds dwarfed anything Romney’s been able to draw so far.” In fact, “Romney crowds are still usually measured in the hundreds.”

Passive vs Active: Per Livewire, “Everywhere you turned, supporters were being asked to hand the Obama campaign a phone number, address or social media account handle… This is not the scene at a Romney rally… Ann and Mitt Romney rarely if ever talk about voter registration.”

    Diversity: Guess.

Hint, quoting fro … [F]or now, the diversity is found at Obama’s rallies.”

    – – -The Super Moon of May 5, 2012 – —

—–Super moon to appear Saturday May 5 2012, 11:54PM Eastern Time. A “supermoon” is the coincidence of a full moon (or a new moon) with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, or perigee, leading to the technical name for a supermoon of the perigee-syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system. The association of the Moon with both oceanic and crustal tides has led to claims that the supermoon phenomenon may be associated with increased risk of events such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. However, the evidence of such a link is widely held to be unconvincing.

Alabama politician Bill Johnson ‘obsessed’ with donating sperm

Bill Johnson, a former Alabama gubernatorial candidate, has left his wife and family in Prattville to be with babies he secretly conceived as a sperm donor in New Zealand.

Johnson’s wife, Kathy Hale Johnson, told the New Zealand Herald that Johnson recently returned to live in New Zealand where he donated sperm to at least 10 women without her knowledge.

“He wants me to move over there. He’s not coming back,” she told the newspaper.

She said Johnson plans to apply for residency so he can stay in New Zealand, and that he intends to donate sperm to additional women.

“He is obsessed with this. He doesn’t want to stop,” she said.

    – — -Bryan Fischer: How Is Romney ‘Going To Stand Up To North Korea If He Can Be Pushed Around By A Yokel Like Me?’- – –

    – – – – -American Family Association spokesman Bryan Fischer led the right-wing charge against Mitt Romney’s ousted foreign policy spokesman Ric Grennell, lambasting the presumed GOP nominee for hiring the openly-gay aide. When Grennell resigned under pressure from social conservatives this week, Fischer declared it a “huge win.”

But today, Fischer himself backtracked a bit. On his radio, the far-right activist noted what many liberals have, asking, why should voters trust Romney to confront Russia or North Korea if he can’t even stand up to a “yokel” talk show host? Right Wing Watch flagged the clip:

    – – -Al Green: Prez gets a B+ – – —

    – – –Soul singer Al Green doesn’t want the president to “stay together” with his famous song, joking that Obama’s rendition could put him out of business.

“His singing would be, I think, a B+. But I don’t want him to take my job,” Green told CNN on the stage at Jazzfest in New Orleans on Saturday.

“He was good, though, honestly, he was good. He sounded great.”

Green said that it was an honor for the president to sing his song, which he referred to as “our national anthem.”

“I thought that was so unique. I never had that happen before. When a president do it, then that’s kind of special,” Green said.

mitt romney advocates cutting ssi benefits to 6,000 a year yet tax cuts to millionaires and a massive military build up is this guy clearly insane and he does have signs of being a social path/ psycho path. Under Nixon Spiro Agnew was forced to resign for a mental condition is it and Clinton was impeached over one single lie. how many lies has Mitt told this campaign and somehow his policies will magically balance the budget my question how many people will die in his wars and by starvation is this what we want in Ameriica
