—- –[President] Obama’s Second Term: Twelve Issues and What He’ll Try Do About Them – —

    — – —In his second Inaugural Address, Barack Obama outlined several issues that he plans to focus on during his final term. Some other policy areas went largely unmentioned, but were first-term priorities that might receive more attention over the next four years. Here’s a look at the President’s record on twelve key issues: what he’s said, what he’s accomplished so far, and what he might be planning. For further details, read Ryan Lizza’s 2012 inside account of the debates over the President’s second-term agenda.<

    What he’s said:
“I believe the United States has a unique responsibility to act—indeed, we have a moral obligation. I say this as President of the only nation ever to use nuclear weapons.”
March 26, 2012; Seoul, South Korea.

    What he’s accomplished:
The Administration oversaw the ratification of a new Strategic Arms-Reduction Treaty with Russia in April, 2010, which will significantly reduce the number of deployed strategic weapons. It coöperated with Israel in the development of Stuxnet, a computer virus aimed at sabotaging Iran’s nuclear program. The U.S. also led a coalition to initiate harsh sanctions against Iran in order to pressure the country to abandon its program. The President hosted the Nuclear Security Summit in April, 2010.

    Possible second-term goal:
Ratify the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty. Contain Iran’s nuclear program. Pressure China and Russia to more aggressively oppose Iran and North Korea’s nuclear program. . .

    — –Ugandan Teen Phiona Mutesi Overcomes Homelessness To Become International Chess Star – —

    – – – –She grew up in one of the poorest spots on earth. She couldn’t read or write. As a child, she scrounged for food each day for herself, her mother, and her brother. But a chance encounter with a chess coach turned her into a rising international chess star, the subject of a book — and the protagonist in a future Disney movie.

Ugandan teenager Phiona Mutesi is “the ultimate underdog,” her biographer says. Those who work with her believe she’s 16. But since her birthday is unclear, she might still only be 15, they say. Her father died from AIDS when Mutesi was around 3. “I thought the life I was living, that everyone was living that life,” the teenager told CNN, describing her childhood in Katwe, a slum in the Ugandan capital of Kampala.

“I was living a hard life, where I was sleeping on the streets, and you couldn’t have anything to eat at the streets. So that’s when I decided for my brother to get a cup of porridge.”
Robert Katende, a missionary and refugee of Uganda’s civil war, had started a chess program in Katwe. He offered a bowl of porridge to any child who would show up and learn.

    ——–SNIP —
–Mutesi did not become a top player overnight. But from the time she first showed up in 2005, her aptitude was clear.
    – —Her talent is “extraordinary,” said Katende. Mutesi liked chess, and started training and practicing regularly. “It took me like a year” to get very good, she said.

—According to Fox News, the child brought the gun to school on Thursday and a classmate went home and told his mother, who called the school the next morning around 8:30 a.m.. They checked the student and he had brought the same gun again. It was confiscated around 9:00 a.m.

The president is getting ready to launch a campaign next week aimed at overhauling the nation’s immigration system and creating legal status for millions of people living in the U.S. undocumented.

    – —Thousands In D.C. Protest For Gun Control – –

    — — – Thousands of gun control advocates from across the nation rallied on the National Mall Saturday, demanding Congress and President Obama to pass gun legislation while the issue is still in the national spotlight.

Demonstrators came from across the country, including a busload of people from Newtown, Conn. One of the protesters, Eddy Sourby, is a freshman at Newtown High School.

Sourby was at the high school on Dec. 14, when, about a mile away, Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 elementary school students.

    – — -SNIP – –

Sourby came to protest in D.C. with her mom, and about 80 others from Newtown, who say they were galvanized by the tragedy.

D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton was among the roster of local and national leaders who fired up the crowd. At one point, she asked all of the Newtown residents at the demonstration to stand up to be recognized.

“Today we join the great majority of Americans who want to move this country off of the outskirts of civilization, into the civilized world of nations who protect their children,” says Norton in a speech to the crowd.

  • Tom Harkin of Iowa Won’t Seek Re-election to Senate

WASHINGTON — Senator Tom Harkin, the Democrat from Iowa who championed landmark legislation banning discrimination against people with disabilities, said Saturday that he would retire and not seek re-election next year to a sixth term.

The announcement from Mr. Harkin sets the stage for one of the most competitive Senate races in the country in the 2014 midterm elections. It will be a crucial contest in the Republican Party’s quest to win control of the chamber from Democrats.

“It’s not easy to walk away, but life is fleeting,” Mr. Harkin, 73, said in an interview Saturday. “I’ve had the privilege to be here for 40 years. Too many people hang on to power for too long, and that’s not right.”

Ok, with Saxby Chambliss retiring from the Senate…we’re about to see the emoprogs and fauxgressives completely screw up the chance to get a Dem Senator to represent Georgia. Just watch, mark my words. Already the tea partiers are shrieking that Chambliss was just a RINO. Chambliss, a traditional southern conservative was not right wing ENOUGH for today’s batshyt crazy GOP – so they’re about to nominate a crazed right winger…now is the time for a “blue dog” Democrat to run that could probably win this thing. I mean a pro-gun white man from south Georgia that would at least vote with the President’s agenda 50% of the time and be able to talk to Billy Bob and Udell in rural Gawga and explain how they are benefitting from Dem policies. This is Georgia…no firebrand liberal is gonna win this seat. Its not happening. So I am absolutely positive we will see the stupid northeast “progressives” stick their noses in this state and screw up any chance of getting at least a conservadem to replace Chambliss. I pray the Dem state party is not so stupid as to mess this opportunity up.

For The Sixth Time In One Week, Man Shot At Gun Show

Gun activists designated last Saturday “Gun Appreciation Day” in an attempt to highlight their opposition to gun safety laws. The PR stunt proved to be more of an embarrassment, however, when 5 people were shot at 3 different gun shows on Gun Appreciation Day. On Friday afternoon, an Iowa gun dealer closed out the week by becoming the sixth person shot at a gun show. The man claims he was “showing off a .25 caliber pistol he thought was unloaded when he slid the action of the gun.” The gun was not unloaded, and a bullet went through his left palm.http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2013/01/26/1500431/for-the-sixth-time-in-one-week-man-shot-at-gun-show/

Republicans Might Be Outsmarting Themselves on the Electoral College

[….] Republicans are picking and choosing different systems in different states, with not even a pretense that they’re doing it for any reason aside from choosing whichever system benefits Republicans the most in each state. This is so obviously outrageous that it’s likely to prompt a backlash.

Democrats don’t have the votes to fight back with anything similar, but they do have another weapon in their back pocket: the National Popular Vote interstate compact, an agreement among states to award all their electoral votes to whichever presidential candidate wins the popular vote nationwide. If states with more than half of all electoral votes sign up for this, it goes into effect. So far, only nine states with a total of 132 electoral votes have signed up. But if Republicans continue their patently shameful effort to game the Electoral College system, it might spur more states to sign up.[….] Republicans might want to think about that as they move forward. If they keep going, the end result might be a system even less favorable to them than the current Electoral College.

I also found this but don’t know if it will help because portions of the Voting Rights Act is being challenged in a case that’s before the Supreme Court, with Roberts in favor of invalidating a crucial component of the Act because he believes we’re “living in different times,” and the measures that are stipulated are no longer needed.

    Redistricting Information

The Civil Rights Division occupies several unique roles in that redistricting process. Each, however, has the same focus: that the redistricting does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, or membership in a protected language minority group. We rely on two statutes to ensure that the redistricting process and the plans that result from that process comply with the Constitution and the Voting Rights Act.

Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act
Section 2 of the Act is a nationwide prohibition against voting practices and procedures, including redistricting plans that discriminate on the basis of race, color or membership in a language minority group. It prohibits not only election-related practices and procedures that are intended to be racially discriminatory, but also those that are shown to have a racially discriminatory impact. The United States and private parties may file a lawsuit against a redistricting plan alleging that it violates Section 2.[….]

Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act
Section 5 applies to sixteen states, either in full or in part. In those areas subject to its requirements, a change affecting voting, such as a redistricting plan, may not be used unless that jurisdiction can show that the change has neither a discriminatory purpose nor will have a discriminatory effect. This can be done in one of two ways. The jurisdiction can file an action in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. Unless the court determines that the jurisdiction has established the absence of both a discriminatory purpose and effect, the change cannot be implemented. As an alternative, the change can be submitted to the Attorney General. Unless the Attorney General informs the jurisdiction that it has not met its burden of showing the absence of both a discriminatory and effect within 60 days after receipt of a completed submission, the jurisdiction is free to use the change.[….]

Philadelphia, Portland City Councils Consider Offering Workers Paid Sick Leave

[….] City councils in Portland, Oregon and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania are both considering new paid sick leave laws. Under the Portland proposal, all businesses would have to grant workers at least 40 hours of sick leave each year; for businesses with more than six employees, that leave time would be paid.[….] In Philadelphia, where a paid sick leave law was passed in 2011 but was vetoed by the mayor, lawmakers are making another attempt. The bill is backed by local restaurant workers, thousands of whom go to work while sick each day.

Nearly 80 percent of food workers do not have paid sick leave, and 60 percent say they have reported to work while sick. A majority of Americans support providing paid sick leave to food workers.[….]

Here’s evidence of CLEAR INTENT to use “election-related practices and procedures that are intended to be racially discriminatory, but also those that are shown to have a racially discriminatory impact,” in clear violation of the Voting Rights Act.

ALEC’s Fingerprints Are All Over the Electoral College Rigging Efforts in Blue States

[….] The current Republican assault on the democratic process began during the 2010 midterm elections when dark money groups helped Republicans pick up 675 legislative seats and gain complete control of 12 state legislatures, and the result was the GOP redrawing lines for four times as many congressional districts as Democrats. In early 2010, Karl Rove laid out the Republican approach to redistricting in a Wall Street Journal article titled, “He who controls redistricting can control Congress” and his words were prophetic as Republicans held the House of Representatives despite earning 1.4 million fewer votes than Democrats. Once Republicans controlled state legislatures, they had free rein to begin redistricting to tilt elections in Republicans’ favor, and it was ALEC that provided Republican governors and state legislators with the redistricting tactic to rig Electoral College votes and guarantee a Republican will always be president.

The corporate-controlled ALEC was instrumental in pushing redistricting tactics spearheaded by a former national Republican Party lawyer, Mark Brayden, who gave a presentation on redistricting to members of ALEC’s Public Safety and Elections Task Force in December 2010. Wisconsin Senate majority leader, Scott Fitzgerald, a member of that Task Force and former ALEC state chair, received an email invitation in January 2011 for an ALEC “special” conference call with other Wisconsin Republicans to discuss the legality of redistricting; Fitzgerald led the redistricting effort in Wisconsin, and no Democrats were invited to the secret ALEC conference call.[….]
