Saturday Open Thread: African American Car Designers

Good Morning Obots!

Today’s featured car designer is Andre Hudson!

A design career that started with doodling sports cars

From the perspective of a Denver middle school teacher, grading papers from Andre Hudson was a chore.

“Like a lot of kids,” the 33-year-old designer recalled, “I was always doodling on assignments and the teachers were not quite happy when I turned papers in with sketches of people and cars and boats on them. I never really imagined that you could make a career doing something like that.

“Then somebody gave me an automobile magazine since I had always loved cars. There was a sidebar story on Chrysler design and a story about a designer that had worked on the Dodge Viper concept. I was blown away. Somebody’s job is to go in and draw and design cars! I had never thought about it. Wow! This could be an amazing thing to do! That’s why I consider it a blessing to be able to do what I do for a living.”

Whether or not Black artists could do that for a living is a question the young Hudson didn’t ask. His middle school guidance counselors had no idea what it took to get involved in automotive design, or where to go for practical guidance. So Hudson went home and composed a letter to Bob Lutz, then at Chrysler Design, saying he was about to enter high school and wanted to know what it took to be a car designer.

“I would love to work for your guys at some point,” Hudson wrote. “I loved aircraft and cars and could you please enlighten me as to what I need to do to pursue a career?”

Three months later, young Hudson got home from school and found a letter from J.E. Hurlitz, then vice president of product design, stating the company was “thrilled with your excitement and willingness to work with us.”  If Hudson attended the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and earned a degree in industrial design he could join the Chrysler design team. Three years later, Hudson graduated from high school, packed up, and headed for Detroit, unaware of the downward spiral of the Motor City.

“Imagine the shock of this Colorado kid packing up his Dodge Shadow and rising out of I-94 corridor into downtown Detroit thinking where have I come to?” Hudson recalled.  “That neighborhood was abandoned and there were barrels with fires burning in them. It looks like I have landed on the set of Robocop.”

But college was a different world. This was the study of utilitarian art in motion. To designers, a car is a form of performance art and those who appreciate your work buy replicas to take home.

“Cars are a very emotional product,” he explained, “and as a designer of cars, they are extensions of you. Trains and aircraft and other types of transportation are more engineering than design driven and, therefore, the attachment is not quite that emotional.

“There is much more freedom of expression in vehicle design, and it’s what made the connection with me as an artist.”

In his junior year, he received a summer internship with Chrysler. But his work brought him to the attention of Ed Welburn, a design executive at General Motors, who hired him when he graduated.

Welburn, who would eventually become vice president of global design at GM, mentored Hudson, steering him through several projects as he grew as a design professional.  “I worked on several concept cars,” he said. “Your dream is to do that because you can get those dreams out on the turntable at shows.  But as you mature you realize the importance of not only getting the cover of a magazine for a month or two, but working on a product that you can see in your neighbor’s garage or your parents’ garage.

“It’s been a quest to hone my skills and put out products that my friends and family can drive.”

His seven-year journey through GM’s design system had the young Hudson working on big SUVs including the Chevy SSR and Hummer H3, as well as the slick, Saturn Sky roadster. He had a three month assignment in GM’s design shop in Coventry, England, which stretched to three years.

Hudson was eager to see the world, and looked forward to working in other GM design studios. But then, the Koreans came calling.

“I was intrigued with Hyundai,” he said. “They were on this mission to become much more — perception wise — than the staid company they had been. I was intrigued with the idea of becoming part of a company going through that growth process.

    – – –Fearing primaries, GOP members opted to shun Boehner’s ‘Plan B’– —

    – – — – –Many House Republicans refused to vote for Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) Plan B bill because they were “gun shy” about drawing primary challengers in the 2014, according to several lawmakers.

A number of members involved in the intense whipping operation that took place over the past two days told The Hill that entrenched no votes were more concerned with perception than principle.

“I think that there were members that are so gun shy about primaries that they weren’t willing to take a risk … some members told me that it was just too hard to explain how it wasn’t a tax increase,” Rep. Mike Coffman (R-Colo.) said shortly following Thursday night’s abrupt conference meeting where Boehner told his colleagues they wouldn’t vote on the bill.

-Fewer than 24 hours later, Speaker Boehner told reporters that his colleagues were worried about the perception of raising taxes.

    – – –“There was a perception created that that vote last night was going to increase taxes. Now I disagree with … that characterization of the bill, but that impression was out there. Now, we had a number of our members who just really didn’t [want] to be perceived as having raised taxes,” the Speaker said at a Friday morning press conference in the U.S. Capitol.

–“The NRA’s blanket call to arm our schools is really nothing more than a distraction. It’s a delay tactic,” Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) said at a press conference Friday. “It’s a distraction from the availability of military style assault weapons…It is a distraction from the prevalence of large ammunition feeding devices that allow shooters to expel 20, 30, 60, 100 and even more bullets. And it’s a distraction from how easy it is to purchase weapons at gun shows, with no background checks at all.”

    — – –Teachers, school superintendents, mayors and police chiefs in Connecticut are rejecting the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) response to the shooting in Newtown, describing the gun lobby’s proposal to equip schools with armed guards and more guns as too simplistic, shameful, and opportunistic.

One Connecticut school superintendent dismissed the NRA’s suggestion as “an ill-conceived reaction from an organization that does not have any credibility or expertise with respect to addressing school violence” and said that the idea “is an excuse for not addressing the need to enact meaningful safe gun legislation in conjunction with an investment in mental health services.” Putnam Police Chief Rick Hayes called the proposal “scary,” noting that teachers can’t possibly have the kind of training necessary to safely handle large weapons.

In fact, newspaper headlines across the state flatly rejected militarizing Connecticut schools:

All I’ll be asking for for Christmas, after hearing Wayne LaPierre essentially blame school officials for the shootings, is for [my brothers] to resign from the NRA.”

“Whether and how the party can resolve the issue has implications going forward. It could determine Boehner’s viability — even his survival– as leader of the only part of the federal government controlled by the Republicans. It also could set the terms of engagement for the battles that lie ahead, including such contentious ones as immigration and the fiscal 2013 spending bills, which are funded for only half the year and which expire March 31.”

“As things stand now, some worry that nothing short of a catastrophe could force a resolution.”

WSJ: Fiscal Cliff Talks Between Obama, Boehner Broke Down On Monday
David Taintor – 11:12 AM EST, Saturday December 22, 2012

Fiscal cliff negotiations between House Speaker John Boehner and President Obama to reach a big deal broke down Monday afternoon, according to a behind-the-scenes report from the Wall Street Journal:

Mr. Obama repeatedly lost patience with the speaker as negotiations faltered. In an Oval Office meeting last week, he told Mr. Boehner that if the sides didn’t reach agreement, he would use his inaugural address and his State of the Union speech to tell the country the Republicans were at fault.

At one point, according to notes taken by a participant, Mr. Boehner told the president, “I put $800 billion [in tax revenue] on the table. What do I get for that?”

“You get nothing,” the president said. “I get that for free.”

    • Dayum, OBeezy!

Too bad the 47% video person didn’t video of that exchange.

      • Alma98

“You get nothing”. “I get that for free” HAHAHAHAHA!

        • And now after the Thursday fiasco Boehner like always is begging PBO to rescue him:

“The House did not take up the tax measure today because it did not have sufficient support from our members to pass,” Speaker John A. Boehner said in a statement. “Now it is up to the president to work with Senator Reid on legislation to avert the fiscal cliff.”

          • Alma98

I think it’s funny that the emos when went nuts running around with their hair on fire. Now they look idiots but I don’t expect apologies from their know it all asses. It really pisses me off that they think they can teach PBO how to negotiate.

        Hill Dweller Says:

Someone needs to cut and paste that article here. The snippets I’m seeing are hilarious.

The GOP staff wanted Obama to offer the 2011 deal again, but he told them to eat shit.

Paul Ryan prevented a larger deal because it didn’t make structural changes to entitlements. I think this validates the theory that Obama wanted to give the impression of being open to entitlement change for the Village without actually following through.

Obama reacting to the wingnuts’ offer: “You’re asking me to accept Mitt Romney’s tax plan? Why would I do that?”.

      • rikyrah

        dmsilev Says:

        @General Stuck: Another excerpt:

After the debacle of 2011, Mr. Obama could have treated the negotiations as the art of the bipartisan deal that could set the stage for immigration reform and other second-term achievements. Flush with victory, he could have at least made a gesture on entitlements.
Instead, he has treated the talks as an extension of the election campaign, traveling around the country at rally-style events at which he berates Republicans for not accepting his terms of surrender. Grant gave Lee more at Appomattox.

      arguingwithsignposts Says:

      Here’s some more:

On Dec. 13, Mr. Boehner went to the White House at the president’s request, joking he was going to the woodshed.

The president told him he could choose one of two doors. The first represented a big deal. If Mr. Boehner chose it, the president said, the country and financial markets would cheer. Door No. 2 represented a spike in interest rates and a global recession.

Mr. Boehner said he wanted a deal along the lines of what the two men had negotiated in the summer of 2011 in a fight over raising the debt ceiling. “You missed your opportunity on that,” the president told him.

      • Sllllllaaaaapppp!

miranda – —Been watchin’ annnd waitin’ 4 A RESPONSE from Ms. SERENA.
[I’ll SPLIT IT — in order 2 NOT overrun the space limits.] :>)

BUT FIRST: – -THIS COMMENT: – –PART #1: – KhalidX 4 hours ago

How profoundly ignorant of Serena and some of the comments . I read someone state ” We will never overcome racism” . My question is does this person know what racism is and since when do black people have to overcome it. Maybe white people should try to overcome demeaning black people? In addition , her teasing Serena would not be a big deal if the history of white people had not been filled with such disrespect toward black women. Clearly people have not heard of Hottentot Venus who was paraded and caged around Europe due to her shape. The Jezebel stereotype was created in the 1630’s by white men. It is a sick and self-serving stereotype pushed by slave-masters that has not yet died out. Slave-masters forced black slave women to sleep with them. Deep down they knew it was wrong, that it was a crime, even if the law allowed it (it did – black women were their property). But instead of telling the truth about themselves, they chose to tell a lie about black women. Black women had no way to call them on it and even white women believed it. It has lasted down to our time, finding new life in Hollywood, starting in the 1970s with blaxpoitation films, and later with hip hop . Sadly , some of us still have bought into the idea . —END of PART #1.

    • GreenLadyHere

PART #2: — -The Jim Crow exhibit can be viewed at the Ferris University website. I suggest black people look at it . Serena’s ignorance is dangerous because it allows our boys and girls to think that black women as successful as Serena can be reduced to only being “bootylicious” and “assets.” The black woman is beautiful like no other but she is more than just big ol breasts and a big butt. Its amazing how many black people take the view of Booker T Washington and want to defend or minimize the conduct of white people. Serena sounds profoundly stupid and I am confused. You may have heard of or seen 16-year-old Taylor Townsend, a tennis star that won the Austrlian Open as a 14th seed and also won the doubles tournament with her partner Gabrielle Andrews earlier this year. Or maybe you heard her name when she won the 2012 Wimbledon Championships. Townsend had dreams of competing in the US Open Junior Tournament,ut the US Tennis Association chose not to fund her travel, and turned down her request to compete as a wild card in the main draw at Flushing Meadows. Reason: she’s overweight. Serena defended her and now she defends people mocking at her body. I guess Serena now feels Townsend can be teased as well and I guess we blacks need to lighten up . Let the whites have a good laugh. They mean well anyway . What is really unsettling is that people who paved the way for Serena like Althea Gibson displayed class in the face of extreme racism. Althea Gibson NEVER defended it . Despite her success on the court, the specter of segregation hounded her. She was still barred from some clubs where prestigious tournaments were played. The same clubs Serena plays in today.

      • TyrenM

I found Ferris website around the time I found JJP (and you 🙂 ) The walk from Althea to Serena is definitely one she needs to be reminded of. To defend Taylor and let Caro go, Ugh.

    miranda: — — NOW: Here’s Ms. Serena’s RESPONSE: – —

    – – –Serena Defends Caroline Wozniacki’s Impersonation: She’s My Friend, Not Racist – –

    – —When Danish tennis player, Caroline Wozniacki, did her best Serena Williams impersonation during a match with Maria Sharapova, by stuffing her shirt and skirt with towels to roast Williams’ famous assets, Black people — especially sisters — were in an uproar. Accusations of racism exploded across the internet as article after article dissected Wozniacki’s intentions.
    – – -SNIP – —

    USA Today reports:
—— —-“I know Caro and I would call her my friend and I don’t think she (meant) anything racist by it,” she wrote from the island of Mauritius off the coast of Africa, where she is training in preparation for the Australia swing.
    – — — Williams herself has poked fun at her physique, calling herself “bootylicious” and referring to her extra “assets.”
    – — — She and Wozniacki likewise have a history — a friendly one.
    – – – -SNIP – —

At the end of the day I spend my time focused on things to become better and not bring me down,” she continued.
“I must add if people feel this way she should take reason and do something different next time,” she concluded, punctuating her sentence with a smiley emoticon.

Well GLH I agree with you. Serena’s so called friend not only disrespected Serena but she disrespected black women in general. Now I cannot sit here and argue that this girl is not Serena’s friend. Serena claims that they are friends so be it. However, Caroline went out of her way to disrespect an entire group of women, that happen to be black, so I think it is fair to say that she is racist whether she recognizes it or not.. Serena basically said well Caroline cannot be racist because she has a black friend. Crazy that Caroline did not have to make that tired ass statement as there were plenty of black folks willing to make it for her. Whatever I will always wish Serena the best even though I think she made the wrong call in regards to this situation.

I would have been SURPRISE if Serena had said anything differently. Their crazyazz father TRAINED them to ignore racist attacks cause he knew it would b a no win situation for them. Its up to us to call them out while the Williams sisters continue pissing off msm/tennis world by taking those lil white girls titles.

Meet The Man Leading The NRA’s Push For Guns In Schools

    Eric Lach-December 21, 2012, 3:59 PM11159
At the National Rifle Association’s press conference on Friday, the group’s Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre called on Congress to “immediately” put armed police officers in every school, and rejected any suggestion that the nation’s gun laws needed to change in the wake of last Friday’s mass shooting in Newtown, Conn.

At the end of his defiant remarks, LaPierre also announced the NRA’s plan to develop a National School Shield Emergency Response Program, a “multifaceted” education and training program “available to every school in America free of charge.” LaPierre said the NRA had selected former Rep. Asa Hutchinson (R-AR) to lead the effort, and serve as its national director.

“School safety is a complex issue with no simple, single solution,” Asa said in his brief remarks. “But I believe trained, qualified, armed security is one key component among many that can provide the first line of deterrence as well as the last line of defense.”

Since then, he’s formed a consulting business, Hutchinson Group, and a law firm, The Asa Hutchinson Law Group, which is based in Arkansas but maintains a D.C. office. Among Hutchinson clients, past and present, listed on the Hutchinson Group’s website are Xe Services, the private security company previously known as Blackwater and now known as Academi. It also lists Science Applications International Corporation, or SAIC, a major federal contractor and a company which in March agreed to pay New York City $500 million for its role in a project that U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara called “corrupted to its core by one of the largest and most brazen frauds ever committed against the City of New York.
