Saturday Open Thread: African-American Pioneers in Healthcare

I hope everyone enjoyed this week’s open thread about African-American Pioneers in Healthcare.

Joycelyn Elders was born Minnie Lee Jones in Schaal, Arkansas on August 13, 1933. In college, she changed her name to Minnie Joycelyn Lee (later using just Joycelyn). In 1952, she received her B.A. in biology from Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas. After working as a nurse’s aid in a Veterans Administration hospital in Milwaukee for a period, she joined the Army in May, 1953. During her 3 years in the Army, she was trained as a physical therapist. She then attended the University of Arkansas Medical School, where she obtained her M.D. degree in 1960. After completing an internship at the University of Minnesota Hospital and a residency in pediatrics at the University of Arkansas Medical Center, Elders earned an M.S. in Biochemistry in 1967.

Elders then received a National Institutes of Health career development award, also serving as assistant professor in pediatrics at the University of Arkansas Medical Center from 1967. She was promoted to associate professor in 1971 and professor in 1976. Her research interests focused on endocrinology, and she received certification as a pediatric endocrinologist in 1978. She became an expert on childhood sexual development.

In 1987, Elders was appointed Director of the Arkansas Department of Health by then-Governor Bill Clinton. Her accomplishments in this position included a ten-fold increase in the number of early childhood screenings annually and almost a doubling of the immunization rate for two-year-olds in Arkansas. In 1992, she was elected President of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officers.

Elders became Surgeon General of the Public Health Service on September 8, 1993, appointed by President Clinton. She was the first African American to serve in the position. As Surgeon General, Elders argued the case for universal health coverage, and was a spokesperson for President Clinton’s health care reform effort. She was a strong advocate for comprehensive health education, including sex education, in schools. She was outspoken in her views, and was forced to resign after only 15 months in the position as a result of a controversial remark about sex education. Her last day in office was December 31, 1994. She returned to the University of Arkansas Medical Center as professor of pediatrics.

Good Morning POU. Damn. Me up early on a Saturday morning while daughter is away. Anyway. Let’s remember Dr. Elders with Lani Guinier, Sista Soulja and other Black casualties – reasons why I won’t be advocating a return to a Clinton White House. I haven’t turned on TV yet though still thinking of Connecticut. Hey GC! Have a good day all.

In this midst of this very sad tragedy, which occurs in a line of many tragedies that have preceded PBO presidency by DECADES, I have no tolerance for the misplaced anger. No time for remarks like a need to “embarrass” PBO, not time for crowning Mr. “Stop and Frisk people of color and let NYPD profile Muslims/Arabs” Michael Bloomberg as the moral authority on gun control. I don’t have time for folks who move well away from the poorer, oft violent plagued neighborhoods and think that these communities must fend for themselves, but if the demographics change, the we MUST take action to stop carnage in America’s idyllic setttings. It is time to stop all this selective outrage. If your ass was not protesting crack/cocaine sentencing disparities and the legions of young minorities who were sentenced to 25plus year sentences in the 1990s and beyond, then I don’t want hear a damn thang about the War on weed. Are we hurting as a nation yes. But why are so many PL mad at the wrong person. How come an unforeseen tragedy is always placed at the feet of PBO. The debate over gun control has always been there…but the arguments about it are very different now. Here’s a prime example of the bullshit I am talking about:

What Obama Must Do About Guns
    Posted by David Remnick

Barack Obama has been in our field of vision for a long time now, and, more than any major politician of recent memory, he hides in plain sight. He is who he is. He may strike the unsympathetic as curiously remote or arrogant or removed; he certainly strikes his admirers as a man of real intelligence and dignity. But he is who he is. He is no phony. And so there is absolutely no reason to believe that his deep, raw emotion today following the horrific slaughter in Connecticut—his tears, the prolonged catch in his voice—was anything but genuine. But this was a slaughter—a slaughter like so many before it—and emotion is hardly all that is needed. What is needed is gun control—strict, comprehensive gun control that places the values of public safety and security before the values of deer hunting and a perverse ahistorical reading of the Second Amendment. Obama told the nation that he reacted to the shootings in Newtown “as a parent,” and that is understandable, but what we need most is for him to act as a President, liberated at last from the constraints of elections and their dirty compromises—a President who dares to change the national debate and the legislative agenda on guns.

Morning POU. Monie, I went to find accounts of the Columbine shooting and Pres. Clinton’s remarks and follow-up conversations. Absolutely nothing about gun control and I for one, do not recall any demands on him to do anything about it. So we know where the lines are drawn when it comes to PBO. To them, he is still “just a servant.”

      • GN

Yup; the PL has a very pathological view of this POTUS. As much as they accuse us of being cultists, I have never seen “the left” so fixated and obsessed with a single politician. They’re fucking crazy and piss poor spokespeople for liberalism (they don’t speak for me as a liberal at all).

        • dannie22

          pl arent liberals.

    • MsKitty

I hope you’ll forgive me for scrolling past the rest of the post after your on-point commentary. I have no tolerance for this whiny bullshit. Until people start marching to the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue, with a pit stop to NRA headquarters I got no time for them. Period.

      • MonieTalks

        Spot on comment.

And not only that, but November 2011, the White House was struck with a bullet by another supposedly troubled man who had an arrest record in 3 different states? The shooter was even stopped in the morning for circling the area, but was let go, only to return to shoot at the White House later. Did y’all catch the vigil in the aftermath?

    • Kennymack1971

David Remnick could have written something about Congress failing to reinstate the Assault Weapons Ban like the President and Attorney General wanted to do but no more addressing the President of the United States as if he’s the Help. The PL stays on some bullshit even in the face of tragedy.

      • GN

They spin everything and I mean everything to somehow relate to the daddy in the WH. They truly are worthless, I don’t consume any of the PL’s media products anymore.

        • Kennymack1971

I have truly come to despise the PL as much as I do the RW. They’re using this tragedy to attack the President knowing that if this hadn’t happened it would be something else that they would attack him for. For the PL it’s about showing the sheep that Barack Obama is a weak and ineffective President facts be damned. They are just as disgusting as the RW.

Outside of the piss poor job media did yesterday( and will no doubt continue), it is just mind-boggling how so many of the typical whiners demanded a press conference by PBO on the spot about gun control, and yet it appears the father of the shooter and ex-husband of the shooter’s mother seemingly did not even know what happened as reporters descended upon his home.

Sandy Hook mass murderer Adam Lanza, 20, ‘deeply disturbed kid’

…..Peter Lanza was blindsided by news of the shooting. When he drove up to his red-brick home in Stamford, Conn., Friday afternoon, a reporter was waiting outside.

“Is there something I can do for you?” Lanza asked, according to the Connecticut Post.

When told his address had been linked to the Newtown massacre, his face dropped, he rolled up the window of his blue Mini Cooper and drove into his garage without commenting.

    – – – —McCarthy: ‘Where is this going to stop?’ – –

    – — —A prominent gun-control advocate in Congress says she will renew her push for legislation restricting firearms purchases after 27 people, including 20 children, were killed Friday in a mass school shooting in Connecticut.

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) on Friday night called for measures closing the so-called “gun-show loophole” and strengthening background check requirement.

McCarthy’s husband was killed in a mass shooting on the Long Island Rail Road in 1993, a tragedy that spurred her to enter politics. In recent years, she has become a familiar voice in the aftermath of massacres, but the legislation she has pushed has not advanced in Congress, where gun rights advocates prevail.

    – –In an appearance on MSNBC, she said she was hoping this time would be different, citing President Obama’s emotional response to the shootings and his call for “meaningful action” to prevent them from happening in the future.

Imma need for Mary Mccarthy to have a seat. She’s been in congress for 15 years and hasnt been able to get any kind of gun control in her own state. She should be working with the gov cuomo and idiotic mayor bloomberg to get gun control. Instead she goes on a rant saying that she wants to “embarrass President Obama” about gun control. Congress itself acts like they have no idea how to govern. McCarthy should be holding town halls in NY getting supporters of gun laws to spread the word about legislation and getting it passed if only town to town or city ti city no matter how small. She doesnt need PBO to do this!! People forget the power they have to make change in our communities!! Im baffled by it.

    – – – —Five Lies The Gun Lobby Tells You – –

    – — –America’s seems to be in for another debate over gun regulation after the slaughter at Sandy Hook Elementary School left 27 (mostly children) dead. So it’s worth reviewing five made against regulating gun ownership in the United States:

MYTH #1: More guns don’t lead to more murders. A survey by researchers at the Harvard University School of Public Health found strong statistical support for the idea that, even if you control for poverty levels, more people die from gun homicides in areas with higher rates of gun ownership. And despite what gun advocates say, countries like Israel and Switzerland don’t disprove the point.

MYTH #2: The Second Amendment prohibits strict gun control. While the Supreme Court ruled in D.C. v. Heller that bans on handgun ownership were unconstitutional, the ruling gives the state and federal governments a great deal of latitude to regulate that gun ownership as they choose. As the U.S. Second Court of Appeals put it in a recent ruling upholding a New York regulation, “The state’s ability to regulate firearms and, for that matter, conduct, is qualitatively different in public than in the home. Heller reinforces this view. In striking D.C.’s handgun ban, the Court stressed that banning usable handguns in the home is a ‘policy choice[]‘ that is ‘off the table,’ but that a variety of other regulatory options remain available, including categorical bans on firearm possession in certain public locations.”

    -MYTH #3: State-level gun controls haven’t worked.

    — -COMMENT: – —Jonathan Gottlieb
It is time to punish the NRA and keep the gun lobbyist out of congress and state lawmakers in a new constitutional amendment and the 2nd amendment needs to be reformed. I believe there needs to be very strict background checks before anyone can buy a gun, and guns should only be allowed in your home to defend your property from danger and not allowed to be taken out of your home under any circumstances expect for hunting in a very small and limited amount.

The Second Most Powerful Gun Lobby in the Country is Located in Newtown, Conn.
Today’s massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. happened in the shadow of the headquarters of one of the biggest gun lobbies in the country: the National Shooting Sports Foundation, which is just three miles away from the school. The NSSF pales in both stature and power to the NRA, but they still actively work to ease laws and regulations for gun owners and supporters.

Things may not be as random as we think.

    – – – – –Sympathy over Conn. school shooting stretches globe – –

    – — Images of a tearful President Barack Obama speaking after a shooting rampage in Connecticut resonated around the world, with many outside the United States expressing hope Saturday that America’s latest school massacre would prompt the country to strengthen gun control.

Shock and sympathy were the initial reactions to the rampage that left 28 people dead, including 20 children at an elementary school. Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard described the attack as a “senseless and incomprehensible act of evil.”

“Like President Obama and his fellow Americans, our hearts too are broken,” Gillard said in a statement, referring to the U.S. leader’s emotional expression of condolence.

    – – –Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda sent a condolence message to Obama. “We express our condolences to the families of the victims,” he said. “The sympathy of the Japanese people is with the American people.”

In the Philippines, a society often afflicted by gun violence, President Benigno Aquino III said he and the Filipino people stand beside the United States “with bowed heads, yet in deep admiration over the manner in which the American people have reached out to comfort the afflicted, and to search for answers that will give meaning and hope to this grim event.

“We pray for healing, and that this heartbreak will never be visited on any community ever again,” Aquino said in a statement tweeted by deputy presidential spokesman Abigail Valte.

BREAKING: – – -SOS Hillary Clinton FAINTS; has CONCUSSION – –

    – —Hillary Clinton faints during speech in Buffalo

    – — – Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton fainted Monday after complaining of a stomach virus before a scheduled speech on Social Security.

Clinton, D-N.Y., received medical attention at the scene and then went on to give another speech Monday afternoon.

“It wasn’t as dramatic as it sounds,” Clinton said after the 30-minute speech to about 125 people at the Saturn Club restaurant. She kept an appointment to speak later at a Catholic college Monday but canceled another speech scheduled for Tuesday.

“About five minutes into the speech, she said she was queasy,” said Erie County Democratic Chairman Len Lenihan, who was at the Women’s TAP fund-raiser at the private club.

Clinton left the podium and continued her talk sitting in a chair but eventually left the room, saying she needed a break, Lenihan said. She returned to the podium a short time later but fainted before resuming her speech.

“It became clear she was faint. She was sort of brought down gracefully,” he said.

The room was cleared, and Clinton immediately received medical attention from, among others, a doctor who attended the event.

    GOP Approves Increased Spending…

Posted on 12/14/2012 at 5:00 pm by JM Ashby

    …for DOMA

While negotiations concerning the fiscal cliff continue, and as the Tea Party House reportedly rejects the idea of even a 10-to-1 cuts:revenue deal, the Republicans have found at least one thing they’re willing to spend more money on — defending bigotry

It has come to light that House Administration Committee Chairman Dan Lungren (R-CA) secretly approved a $500,000 increase to a contract with a private law firm to defend the unconstitutional Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in federal court. While the increase was approved in September, neither the public nor the Democratic House minority was informed until this week, Roll Call reports.

The contract now authorizes Bancroft PLLC and former Solicitor General Paul Clement (R) to spend up to $2 million in to defend DOMA — the second increase to what was originally a $1 million cap.

Former Solicitor General Paul Clement must have an amazing public relations team, because after failing to stop Obamacare, he’s been given a pay raise ahead of an equally unsuccessful campaign to uphold the Defense of Marriage Act. Or so we hope.

Unless you do something truly heinous, such as support President Obama for any reason, you can only fail upward in the Republican party.

    • jds09

The Republicans are on automatic pilot. At this point I don’t think they could change course even if they wanted too.

How Obamacare Will Help Low-Income Mothers Battle Depression

At an Urban Institute panel on depression and low-income Americans on Thursday, Marla McDaniel of the Center on Labor, Human Services, and Population pointed out that low-income American mothers are “more likely to have severe depression.” Fortunately, Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion will help offer those low-income mothers the crucial preventative and mental health services they need to treat their clinical depression.

Especially considering the economic disparity between those who are affected by depression — and the lack of sufficient treatment options for low-income Americans — states that choose to expand Medicaid under Obamacare will make important strides toward ensuring low-income mothers have the health resources they need:[….]

On Friday, police in Bartlesville, Oklahoma arrested an 18-year-old high school student who was planning a school-shooting massacre plot. Sammie Eaglebear Chavez “tried to recruit other students to assist him with carrying out a plan to lure students into the school auditorium where he planned to begin shooting them after chaining the doors shut.” “He also told them that if the students assisting him did not do what they were supposed to do, he would not hesitate to kill them and/or himself.” Chavez was arrested on Friday; bail is set at $1 million.

Sandy Hook elementary school gunman Adam Lanza learned to shoot from his gun-collecting mom

His mother taught him the way of the gun.

Adam Lanza, the troubled nerd who turned a Connecticut school into a slaughterhouse, learned how to shoot under the watchful eye of his demanding mom Nancy.

“They went target shooting as a family,” landscaper Dan Holmes told The Daily News. “That was a passion. The whole family would go together.”

Nancy Lanza wound up being the first of her son’s 27 victims when he used one of her guns to shoot her dead.

Holmes, who often mowed the grass at the Lanza’s sprawling Newtown home, said the doomed mom was proud of her arsenal and once showed him a “big, beautiful rifle” she had just purchased.

“She was very proud of it,” he said. “She loved her guns.”

New Caucus to Push Federal Agencies on Energy Efficiency

It hardly seems possible but after President Obama authorized up to $2 billion last year to support energy efficiency upgrades in federal buildings, only a handful of agencies took him up on the offer. But a new bipartisan House effort, the Energy Savings Performance Caucus, plans to get the ball rolling.[….]

[….] The caucus game plan is to encourage agencies to enter into the contracts and hold them accountable for set energy reduction targets. Under the Energy Savings Performance Contract, no payments for energy retrofits are required up front. The contractor covers upfront financing for items like new equipment, windows and insulation, and installs them. The contractor is repaid over time, with payments based on actual savings generated by the retrofits.

You can now donate to the homeless through a parking meter

A new program in Los Angeles, based on an existing program in Denver, aims to give the humble parking meter the power to truly heal. It will do so by turning the city’s 1,140 sad, outdated meters (they are switching from coin to card-operated) into donation centers for the homeless.[….]

Machinists Rapidly Unionizing Ikea Warehouses: 3 Down, 2 to Go

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) gained international attention in 2011 with its startling win in an election to represent about 300 production workers at an Ikea-owned plant in Danville, Va. It was the first-ever organizing success at Ikea for a labor union in the United States.

Inspired by that victory, IAM has moved swiftly to organize Ikea’s U.S. warehouses and distribution centers, says IAM organizer Joe Flanders. Since the Danville victory, the IAM has won three other union elections—in Perryville, Md., Savannah, Ga., and, most recently, in Westhampton, N.J.—and has campaigns underway at Ikea’s other two U.S. distribution centers.[….]

    Hard to Comprehend

By John Cole December 14th, 2012

This time it is different for me. I’m always furious when these horrible acts of gun violence occur, but this one is just hitting harder. These were just little kids. I keep trying to console myself that maybe some of the victims were so young they didn’t fully comprehend what was happening. It’s not much to grab on to to deal with this situation, but it is the fiction I am using to make this easier.

Christmas was a big time of the year for us- my father collects Santas, and he has usually around 5,000 of them somewhere around the house. There is the Christmas tree with so many ornaments it takes days to put them all up. Lights, ivy, etc. If you saw the pictures I posed the other day, recognize this is 1/10th of the decorations we used to put up. But back then when I was a little kid, my mother and father used to buy Christmas presents for months, wrap them, and “hide” them in their bedroom closet, in the attic, in the basement, and anywhere they could. I have the quotes of sarcasm around hide because even though I was a kid, I knew when it was approaching Christmas time. I knew where to look for the presents. Anytime they went out and left us with a babysitter during this time period, it was like an elaborate Easter Egg hunt for me and my brother and sisters. I’d drag chairs from mom’s office into the closet, pull down the “hidden” presents, and we’d all look at the tag telling us who it was for, shake it, and try to figure out what we were getting.

All I can think right now is how many moms have Christmas present hidden all over their house and were told this morning that their child is dead. How many of them will now look at a Christmas tree, knowing their child will not be there on Christmas morning to open the presents lovingly purchased and wrapped and hidden? How many of these parents struggled for years to get pregnant, and now their kid, because of some lunatic with an easily accessible gun, is dead? How many grandparents who waited for 30 years to have a grandchild, have plane tickets booked for the Holidays, and now need to change those plans and come up earlier to bury their grandchild.

I grew up in a small town where for about 25 months from 1969-1970, every month another couple had a child. These were my friends- Judd, Brad, Micah, Thad, Brian, Ryan, Kelly, Toni, Jodi, Kim, Cole, Ponch, Bert, Erik, Mark, Vicki, Stacy, Dee Dee, and so on. Sandy Hook was a small town, and an entire kindergarten class was wiped out. It would be like everyone who was born in that period in my home town never existed- killed in one horrific act of gun violence. My town would never, ever recover. Ever.

And then the residual trauma. How many of these families will survive? How many of them will be driven to divorce by the trauma. How many of the siblings will never, ever be the same? I talked to my mom on the phone, and she is just inconsolable and simply can not watch the coverage. She’s worried the parents will kill themselves.

This shooter and his easily accessed guns did not just kill 27 people. He ruined thousands of lives. And let’s not forget about the first responders. I don’t care how tough of a cop or a fireman you are, you will never be the same. We’ll have dozens of people with PTSD, leading to alcoholism and drug abuse and family problems.

That thought has crossed my mind more than any other. No words.

hit me too, Ms. Kitty. I was thinking about all the places I have gifts hidden for Peanut.

these families will not have a Holiday season again for a long time.

  • What do we call the Europeans who, 500 years ago, came to north America and slaughtered/disenfranchised its original inhabitants- men, women, children, entire families- so that they could remake this land in their own image? What do we call those who kidnapped, raped and killed a foreign people- men, women, children, families- so that they could be used as free labor in this new land? How do we psychoanalyze THEM? Were they “mentally disturbed” too? How do the armchair psychologist explain President Truman’s mental state when he signed off on the instant killing of 10s of thousands or civilians in Japan- women, men, children- in order to punish military combatants? John Wilkes Booth: was he “socially awkward” as a child? Gang killings, drug related killings: all done by people with “personality disorders”? The men who killed and disfigured 14-year-old Emmett Till: were they bipolar? Autistic? Suffering from depression?

Job Recruiters Turn to LinkedIn, Social Media Startups

[….] Recruiters are filling openings faster by relying on new tools that scour social networks and target workers who aren’t necessarily looking for jobs. LinkedIn (LNKD) got into the field early, launching Recruiter in 2008. It lets headhunters search its more than 187 million profiles and contact potential candidates. Since last year, Adobe has found more than half its new hires through LinkedIn, using job boards to fill only about 5 percent of openings.[….]

[….] The bottom line: Instead of using job sites, companies are finding employees—some of whom aren’t even looking for jobs—through social networks.
