Saturday Open Thread: African American Winemakers

GOOD MORNING PRAGOBOTS! We hope you’re enjoying your weekend.

We conclude our series on African American Winemakers with…

Brown Estate Vineyards
Napa Valley, California

Brown Estate Vineyards, believed to be the first and only Black-owned estate[1] winery in California’s Napa Valley (USA), is best known as one of that region’s most well-regarded zinfandel producers.[2] In addition to zinfandel, Brown Estate produces cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, and petite sirah.

Founded in 1995 by siblings Deneen, David & Coral Brown, Brown Estate produced its first Napa Valley zinfandel in 1996 after the family had been farming grapes – and selling them to established winemakers (including Mike Grgich of Grgich Hills Estate) – for more than ten years.

Early history

(Photo: Brown Estate Facebook Page)

In 1980, parents Bassett Brown (originally from Jamaica) and Marcela Abrahams Brown (originally from Panama) acquired 450 acres (1.8 km2) in the Chiles Valley AVA of the Napa Valley after being informed by local family friends that the property was for sale. Abandoned for some ten years prior, the land and its two structures – an 1859 stone and redwood barn and an 1885 Queen Anne Victorian home – were derelict. The senior Browns cut roads and brought in plumbing and electricity, ultimately earning an award from the Napa County Historical Society for their restoration of the residence structure.[3] In 1985 they planted their first vineyard on the property, approximately nine acres of zinfandel. The Chiles Valley microclimate, characterized by extreme temperature shifts throughout the course of each day, proved perfectly suited to cultivating zinfandel grapes, and the Brown family’s fruit soon gained tremendous popularity among zinfandel producers such as Green & Red and T-Vine Cellars, both of whom purchased Brown Estate fruit for many years. As well, the Browns sold cabernet sauvignon to the famed Mike Grgich. It was through a series of apprenticeships with winemakers who were working with his fruit that David Brown – who by then had been farming his family’s vineyards for five years – began learning the art and science of winemaking.

In the mid-1990s, as a result of rising demand for their fruit, Deneen and David, then both residing on the vineyard property, made the decision to produce wine under their own label. Because they had no winery facility on site, they secured a custom crush contract with Rombauer Vineyards in Saint Helena, and for six years they produced their wines at the Rombauer facility. On January 29, 2000, Brown Estate debuted their first two vintages of Napa Valley zinfandel, 1996 and 1997, at the annual Zinfandel Advocates and Producers (ZAP) tasting at Fort Mason in San Francisco.[4] ZAP is the largest single varietal wine tasting event in the world, and the Brown offerings were very well received by the trade and public alike, thereby establishing Brown Estate as a winery to watch in the arena of Napa Valley zinfandel. Simultaneously, in the January 31, 2000 issue of the Wine Spectator, the 1997 Brown Estate zinfandel received a score of 91 points.

Then, in June 2000, tragedy struck when a fire broke out at the warehouse facility where Brown’s wine library and recently bottled 1998 vintage were stored.[5] With the exception of sixteen bottles – two that went to Robert M. Parker, Jr. for review, two that went to Christie’s for auction, and twelve that the Browns had stored at home – all of their 1998 zinfandel was destroyed, as were the remaining cases of their first two vintages. The lost 1998 vintage left the Browns out of the zinfandel market for one whole year, a devastating setback that was mitigated only by the kindness of restaurant and retail accounts who held space on their wine lists and shelves for the next vintage of Brown zin. In order to bridge that gap, the Browns accelerated the release of their 1999 Napa Valley zinfandel, which they showed at ZAP in 2001. The previous month, in December 2000, Parker, the most influential wine critic in the world, gave the Brown 1998 zinfandel a score of 90, noting that his review was “of academic interest only” since all of the wine had perished in the fire. The loss of the 1998 vintage has kept Brown Estate’s Napa Valley zinfandel bottlings on a perennially early release schedule.

Winery and cave construction

(Photo: Brown Estate Facebook Page)

Meanwhile, the Browns and their small production of a few thousand cases slowly were being squeezed out of the Rombauer facility. In order to continue their now quite promising winemaking endeavor, they were compelled to establish a winery facility on their own property. The location of the old stone and redwood barn, still in its derelict state – doorless, windowless, and with a dirt floor – all but demanded development of an adjacent subterranean wine cave. Winery construction began in Summer of 2002 and by September of that year, the old barn had a new lease on life as Brown Estate’s on-site wine production facility. Brown then became a full-fledged estate winery. Soon production began increasing, and eventually the barrel room in the lower level of the barn was filled to capacity, transforming the wine cave from notion to necessity. Excavation commenced in April 2004, and because the host hillside was solid granite, drilling alone was inadequate. For one solid year, muffled explosions rocked the Brown Estate property as one of the most unique wine caves in the Napa Valley literally was designed by dynamite.

First releases from the 2010 vintage (Photo: Brown Estate Facebook Page)

In Fall 2010, the Brown family celebrated their 30th year in the Napa Valley, and Brown Estate’s 15th crush. The family posted the following message on their Website to commemorate these occasions:

“This year we celebrate our thirtieth year in the Napa Valley, and Brown Estate’s fifteenth crush. We thank all of you, with all of our hearts, for your continued enjoyment of our wines and your truly stupendous support of our once little endeavor. Each time you open and share a bottle of Brown Estate, you wrap your arms around us. It is an embrace that we cherish, a gesture that gives meaning to all of the passion and commitment we put into what we do. Thank you for making us a part of your lives, and for being a part of ours. Now onward & upward! The sky’s the limit!”

In November 2010, the Browns released the world’s first hashtagged wine,[6] their 2009 Napa Valley Zinfandel. Subsequent vintages of this wine continue to bear the #brownzin hashtag, an homage to Twitter, which has been a source of inspiration and support as Brown Estate has built its reputation as a wine industry leader in the realm of social media.[7]

The FP Top 100 Global Thinkers

    For redrawing America’s global footprint.
    President | Washington

[….] At home, Obama has done far more to lift the faltering U.S. economy out of the doldrums than his critics will acknowledge, while expanding the social safety net and daring to take on the greatest threat to America’s fiscal well-being: the country’s exploding health-care costs. Abroad, he has curbed his predecessor’s dangerous excesses, though that doesn’t mean retreating from the world.[….]

But Obama, ever the cautious realist, has been a careful steward of American power. This year has seen the pullout of tens of thousands of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, the theater of America’s longest war. The president has also been wary of getting entangled in the even bloodier sectarian conflict in Syria, refusing to contemplate a Libya-style intervention, and he has wisely adopted a low-key approach to Egypt as it struggles to preserve its newly won democratic freedoms amid an Islamist resurgence.

Whoever sits in the Oval Office in the years ahead will find it hard to break away from Obama’s more restrained view of America’s role in the world — especially now that he has four more years to follow through on his promise to end the wars of the post-9/11 decade.[….]

(She didn’t kiss Hillary’s butt. So what?)

It’s a close call on Susan Rice
By David Ignatius, Published: November 30
    Washington Post

“The pluses far outweigh the minuses, but I’ll offer a selection of both.

Rice’s strengths are that she’s smart, strategic and forthright. She has been a deft negotiator at the United Nations, with a subtle sense of the Chinese and Russians, and perhaps even played them against each other on occasion. She strengthened Security Council resolutions on Iran and North Korea. And for all her reputation as a tough boss, her staff generally likes her, especially the younger members.

Rice’s biggest advantage is her closeness to the president. She understands his vision of a changing world better than anyone else in government. Her instincts match his on the Arab revolutions, the need to engage Iran, the importance of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. She understood that her job at the United Nations was to reset America’s relations with the world, after the George W. Bush years, and she did it.

The negatives with Rice are mostly matters of style. She’s pushy and profane and sometimes seems to shoot from the hip (a mistaken impression, since she, like the president, tends to read all the briefing papers). She was standoffish toward Hillary Clinton, prizing her special relationship with Obama and her Cabinet status. That offended some people.

    • isonprize

(She didn’t kiss Hillary’s butt. So what?)

    • creolechild

So, in other words, Susan Rice has impeccable credentials, gets the job done, and doesn’t suffer fools lightly. If she were a man, would there even be a discussion about her allegedly “pushy and profane” tendencies? Because they could write from now to next year about the same tendencies in one of her loudest and most visible critics, John McCain. But you know they won’t!

This isn’t about qualifications; this is about high profile blacks in politics, who despite their well-earned achievements, are expected to show deference to whites. Don’t believe it? Then ask yourself this question: If the shoe was on the other foot would there be a major meltdown because Hillary was “standoffish” (whatever the fuck that means) to Susan Rice?

Trifling, pathetic, and predictable about sums it up….

“Standoffish toward hillary clinton” is the reason PL is coming for her. Remember my theory that billary was behind these attacks? Seems like its gonna b proven as fact. Just waiting for ed rendell to b on tv talking reckless on hardball

      • Tafr

Angee, just petty and immature on so many levels. They need to realize that not everyone loves Hillary and Bill Clinton. Hillary and Bill need to take responsibility for their racist campaign against this president. Until they do so they gonna find out that Susan Rice is not the only one standoffish towards them. Even then I feel it is too late, they can keep coming after Rice all they want. Let them keep it up because no Clinton will be elected with the majority of the black vote if they continue to act a fool.

        • Camille

I think they’ll find out the hard way.

They are in for a rude shock even as they seem to have not learnt the lessons of 2008.

Positioning Hillary once again as the assumed nominee and trying to clear the field on her behalf by running dubious polls.

          Fuck them all.

If Joe Biden runs, I’m all in. If not, Sayonara Dems.

    • GN

Are they serious?? I don’t get this complaint. I give Pres Bill Clinton huge props for his campaigning this election cycle and I give SoS Hillary Clinton huge props as well, much deserved.

Who is POTUS now? Barack Hussein Obama. HE won HIS presidency, twice, and HE imposed masterful reforms which avoided a depression and third war in the Middle East. And if one of HIS cabinet saw fit to align herself with HIS policies and HIS vision, what exactly is the issue here? He is the POTUS. Susan Rice is on point.

    • I sense the Clintons are involved in this whole mess somehow. Wonder what their relationship w/Rice is really like, considering she used to work for/with them in the 90’s

      • Camille

They thought they owned the Democratic party and have not forgiven anyone who didn’t endorse Hillary; but worse still hate all those who opted for Barack Obama.

The pettiness and vindictiveness of the Clintons will be their undoing. Watch and see. They have met their waterloo this time. God has given them a long enough rope and for a moment there everyone (not me!) thought at least Hillary had repented, but alas.

        Onward Karma!

This is the most immature shit I have read in a long time. Susan Rice does not have to kiss any ass especially Bill and Hillary Clinton’s ass. You know Rice took note of the way they went after then Senator Obama during the primaries. Little ol me here in back country Washington saw it and so did the fabulous Dr Rice along with the entire black community. They are in for a shock once it hits that Susan Rice is not the only one not feeling them. Did Bill Clinton really think he could get away with that SC comment. Oh and Hillary trying to put out there that BO was a Muslim talking about to the best of my knowledge he is a Christian. They really do think black folks forgot about that shit.

      • THIS.

      • Camille

        Thank you!

The biggest thing here is that Susan Rice will be an actual diplomat with tangible accomplishments.

No more of that roaming the world shit and breaking records for most countries travelled with zero accomplishments.

We’ve got world problems to solve and now its time to get back to diplomacy WITH results and progress as opposed to vanity shows courtesy of Hillaryland.

        FORWARD with Susan Rice!

    • Dear David Ignatius,

      We’re free now.

      Black People

    • Camille

The offended “some people” would almost certainly be Hillary and her cronies at Hillaryland.

It’s so funny to hearball this “pushy, profane, snobby” attacks leveled at Susan Rice precisely because just a 4 years ago these were exactly the same words used to describe Hillary.

I hope they all learn to say Madam Secretary Susan Rice, because it is going to happen. And I hope Hillary has jobs lined up for her choreography folks she brought with her to the State Department.

Because in the end like I’ve said before, Dr. Susan Rice – Stanford University, Oxford University graduate and Rhode scholar, is infinitely more qualified and prepared for SoS than Hillary Clinton or anybody else for that matter ever was.

Joe Klein (Time): The Republicans are, reportedly, outraged by President Obama’s opening bid in the fiscal cliff talks. Republicans always seem to be outraged. It’s getting boring. They need to step up and make a counter-offer.

…. It might have seemed “righteous” indignation when the GOP was deluding itself about representing a majority of Americans; now, it just seem puerile and petulant.

… What is difficult for the Fox talking heads to understand is this: We had an election. The President won. This gives him greater leverage than the last election we had, in 2010, when the President’s party lost…

…. the assorted Republican drama queens seem so two months ago, don’t they?

    • creolechild

Imo, all of this foolishness that the Republicans are engaging in is simply a coordinated method to distract from the issues and keep the platform that PBO campaigned on–and won with–from being enacted. We need to continue doing what we’ve always done: remain focused, get accurate information out, lace up the Tims, and help PBO get it done…

    – –With Republicans balking at the prospect of allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire for the top 2 percent of Americans, Democrats are losing patience. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) said Friday that the House GOP will not hold a vote on a middle-class tax bill that excludes the top income brackets, even though the Senate has already approved one.

In response, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced Friday that Democrats plan to bring the legislation to a floor vote next week no matter what. The Democrats plan to use a discharge petition, which can force a bill to the floor if it has been stuck in committee for 30 legislative days. In a new statement, Pelosi dared her Republican colleagues to reject the plan to extend tax cuts for 98 percent of the country:

The clock is ticking, the year is ending, it’s really important, with tax legislation, for it to happen now. We’re calling upon the Republican leadership in the House to bring this legislation to the floor next week. We believe that not doing that would be holding middle-income tax cuts hostage to tax cuts for the rich. Tax cuts for the rich which do not create jobs, just increase the deficit, heaping mountains of debt onto future generations.

THIS – – – -And so, to that end, we are – we will be introducing, if the bill, if there is no announcement of scheduling of the middle income tax cut, which, by the way, has tremendous support in the Republican Caucus – I think we would get a 100 percent vote on it if it came to the floor. If it is not scheduled, then on Tuesday we will be introducing a discharge petition which you know with – if we get 218 signatures, would bring the bill automatically to the floor. That would mean that we need some Republicans who support middle income tax cuts, to sign on with us.

David Firestone (NYT): Republicans reportedly laughed when they saw the Obama administration’s initial offer in the fiscal negotiations yesterday. The idea that President Obama might actually want to enact his campaign promises – tax hikes on the rich, modest Medicare cuts, investments in infrastructure – is apparently considered a joke to the party that has shown virtually no flexibility in the last four years.

But some of that laughter may contain nervousness, because there is more going on here than just a pathway to splitting the difference. The White House made clear yesterday that it is approaching these talks from a position of responsibility, and that it actually takes seriously the notion of old-fashioned bargaining. That’s something Republicans have refused to do — and now they realize they’ve been called out.

The Genius of Obama’s Opening Move: Tightening the Rope Around the GOP’s Neck

The president is in a fighting mood. Starting today, he’s barnstorming the country, getting the American people to pressure Congress to extend the middle class tax breaks, and to do so now. Yesterday, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner presented the leaders of Congress with the Administration’s opening offer. That offer is heavy on revenue, tax fairness, and Medicare savings without affecting benefits. Here’s a short summary of what the president has proposed, from leaked details.

•$1.6 trillion in additional revenue through:
•Raising the rates to Clinton rates for incomes over $250,000.
•Taxing dividends paid to this class as ordinary income (rather than special “capital gains” rates).
•Raising the inhertiance tax to 45% with an exemption for up to $3.5 million, from the current rates of 35% with an exemption of $5 million.
•$50 billion in immediate stimulus spending, and replacement or extension of the payroll tax cut, for a full stimulus price tag of $200 billion.
•Mortgage refinancing help from the federal government.
•End Congressional control over the debt limit, except with a veto-proof, two-thirds majority.
•$400 billion in spending reductions in entitlements (Medicare, mostly) through controlling cost, not cutting benefits.
•$1.2 trillion in reductions from discretionary spending, including defense, counting savings from ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This is shrewd, and has Obama written all over it. Sure, it was the GOP aides that leaked the details, but how much would you like to bet that Geithner and Obama fully counted on them to do so? Look at the details of tax portion of the proposal again: there is nothing remotely radical or unrealistic about it. Not only does a overwhelming majority agree that taxes should be raised on the rich, the vast majority of Americans have never been seen $3.5 million, let alone worried about the taxes needing to be paid for inheriting a sum greater than that. By restricting the dividend taxation increase to the top 2% as well, the president taps into a sense of fairness for the American people. If and when the president negotiates down from this, he will seem eminently reasonable and the Republicans crybabies.

The Senate on Thursday defied a White House veto threat and voted to bar the transfer of Guantanamo Bay detainees to the U.S. for another year. The measure is an amendment to an annual defense authorization bill on the Senate floor this week. The legislation already included a ban on transferring additional detainees to foreign countries.[….] Congress – including a Democrat-run Senate – has stymied Obama’s 2008 campaign pledge to shut down the facility, which holds 166 suspected terrorists and insurgents, including five men facing the death penalty for plotting 9/11.[….]

Strike shuts Port of Los Angeles for 4th day

Cargo ships are being turned away from the nation’s busiest port complex after a worker strike shut the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach for four straight days. Members of a chapter of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union walked off the job on Tuesday, and longshoremen are honoring their picket lines, reports ABC 7. Union members been working without a contract since June 2010. Negotiations on a contract broke down on Monday night and the workers decided to strike, fearing their jobs were being outsourced.[….] “We are not fighting for a pay raise. We are fighting to keep these jobs,” Kim Rich, ILWU office clerical unit told ABC.

Elementary Pupils Immersed in Foreign Language

[….] Kevin Fitzgerald, the superintendent of the Caesar Rodney school district in northeastern Delaware, is never at a loss for words. He speaks with pride about the fact that his district’s high school, Caesar Rodney High School, offers six foreign languages: French, Spanish, German, Latin, and, more recently, Arabic and Mandarin.

This school year, the district introduced a more novel and potentially more effective foreign-language initiative to talk up: a new Chinese-immersion program for 101 kindergartners, which the district plans to offer those children and successive kindergartners through 8th grade.[….] The initiative operates with $1.9 million annually from Delaware’s state budget.[….]

How Students in San Jose Raised the Minimum Wage

In the spring of 2011, students in a sociology class at San Jose State University got together to brainstorm ways to make the world a better place.[….]For Marisela Castro, a junior, the promise of action was precisely what she was looking for, and she already knew the issue she’d champion. She was on a mission to raise the minimum wage.[….] So the students raised $6,000, hired a polling agency and made thousands of calls over a four-day period last fall. The results were encouraging, with about 70 percent in favor.[….]

[….] The Labor Council grew more excited. “I went to my board and said that there was this opportunity to partner with a diverse group of young people who are trying to raise the minimum wage,” explains Chavez. She said they needed $20,000 to start. Unions pledged that amount in three minutes. By the end of the meeting, they’d committed another $100,000. To qualify for the November ballot, the campaign needed to turn in nearly 20,000 signatures. In a five-week period, with help from the Labor Council, it collected 36,000.[….]

Down the home stretch, the Labor Council provided many of the foot soldiers to push the message home, knocking on 80,000 doors and making more than 200,000 phone calls. On November 6, the movement that began with three students brainstorming in a classroom notched its victory. Nearly 59 percent of San Jose voters backed Measure D, which increases the minimum wage from $8 to $10 an hour (and, just as important, it will rise with the consumer price index). San Jose thus became the fifth city in the country—and the largest—to raise its minimum wage, boosting the earnings of tens of thousands of workers by $4,000 a year.

POU FAM♥ – –Today is -WORLD AIDS DAY -2012 —-

    – —On World AIDS Day, Here Are Five Huge Advances We’ve Made To Combat The Global HIV/AIDS Epidemic – –

    – – – – –Today marks World AIDS Day, an annual public health initiative to raise awareness about and mobilize support for combating the HIV/AIDS epidemic around the globe. As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pointed out in a speech earlier this week, significant advances in HIV research and treatment suggest that an “AIDS-free generation” may be in sight.

Clinton’s optimism is shared by the United Nations, whose officials recently noted they believe eradicating AIDS is “entirely feasible” thanks to the global community’s dedicated efforts against the epidemic. Here are five important advancements we’ve made toward that goal over the past year:

    1. Increased access to HIV testing. Thanks to medical experts’ recommendation that Americans between the ages of 15 and 65 get regularly screened for the virus, annual HIV testing will now be covered under Obamacare. And in addition to removing some of the cost barriers to getting tested, this past year also included advances in the ease and availability of HIV testing. The FDA approved the first over-the-counter test that can be taken at home, and the CDC rolled out a pilot program to allow Americans in low-income areas to get tested for HIV at their local pharmacy. Since the CDC estimates that as many as 20 percent of the 1.1 million Americans who have HIV aren’t aware they’re infected with the virus, taking steps to ensure that testing is affordable and accessible is more important than ever.

    2. Improved coverage under Obamacare. Before Obamacare, HIV-positive Americans often struggled to enroll in private insurance plans — but since insurers will no longer be able to discriminate against people with HIV based on their pre-existing condition, Obamacare will ensure that more HIV-positive individuals can access health care

While most of the highly shareable images and video of the president are generated by fans and critics, he has also carefully cultivated online buzz through appearances including his surprise “Slow Jam the News” skit on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and his “Ask Me Anything Q&A” on Reddit.

The end result — whether it’s due to enthusiasm for his historic presidency, or simply the way the timing has coincided with the popularity of social networking — is that he’s our first “meme” president. Hola POU!

I want to share this amazing clip I saw on Norbrook’s blog for all of you who enjoy dance…”greatest dance routine ever filmed”….it was filmed all in one 3 minute segment that no other dancers have ever replicated…

    • Alma98

I saw the whole movie quite a few times AG I love old black movies. Gregory Hines and his brothers played The Nicholas brothers in a film.

      • Aquagranny911

Thanks for the history. I’ve never seen that movie or the film about the Nicholas brothers with Gregory Hines. Love Gregory Hines, great dancer & a most underrated actor, imo. My most memorable film with him was “White Nights” where he played a defector.

Hubby is not a great movie fan unless a lot of things blow up in the first 5 minutes. He also considers going to movie theaters a waste of time & $$ so I catch what I can, when I can, lol.

        I miss a lot!

        • Alma98

I think the movie was The Cotton Club, Laurence Fishburne is also in it. I’m like your husband the movie has to be damn good to get my dollars lol.

    • isonprize

The Nicholas brothers were RIDICULOUSLY good! I get tired just watching this clip. And bruhman in the front row of the sax section is not at all crazy about them jumpin’ and tappin’ all over him. Too funny!!

The fact that they did a zillion splits is amazing enough, but that they could SLIDE UP out of each and every one of them is just outrageous!! LOLOL

      • Aquagranny911

LOL! When I was young I use to be able to rise right up from the floor like that but not from a split!

I had never seen this clip before so I thought it was pretty cool. I love dance! I enjoy dancing myself & I especially enjoy watching really good dancers perform. These guys are just amazing. I watched it several times & just the foot work alone is so good, added to the rest, I was totally, OMG!

In my next life I want to come back as a really, really great dancer!

    Sepia — -Actually — -I liked THIS COMMENT 2 the article: – —

    – – — Re: Did Overconfidence Hurt Romney? (4.00 / 3)
Romney was rather boxed in for that third debate. Having made a fool out of himself when he traveled the world, and having jumped the shark on Benghazi, his campaign probably saw the risks as greater than the rewards. Remember, he had gotten burned several times around foreign policy. Even in the second debate, he had been burned when he tried to run the Benghazi talking point. So he turned every question back to the economy and tried to take it to Obama there.

Standing alone, that tells me little about whether Romney believed he was ahead. I agree that it makes no sense he’d be so overconfident. We all assumed the bravado was right from the Karl Rove BS playbook. So initially I shared Booman’s skepticism. However, the fact that several voices have all made the same claim, and no one has stepped out of the shadows to say otherwise, makes me wonder if they didn’t really drink the koolaid.

That Republican bubble just seems to get ever more sealed. They had their big win in 2010 and it foretold Obama’s inevitable demise, right? Inevitable, dammit! It’s surprising that the people running the circus would allow themselves to be conned. But given what happened with Orca, and many of the other boneheaded decisions made by the campaign, I’ve come around to the theory that Romney and his men were simply dumber than dirt.

Rich guys like Romney spend their whole lives in a bubble, with everyone around them thinking they walk on water. Romney appears to have surrounded himself with “yes” men. Salesmen like himself. Apparently they sold themselves.

The super connected, the super rich, seem as parochial, and in their own way as provincial as the small town folks they court with contempt.

But folks who move around, work in the public and private sector, just encounter many types of people from all walks of life are more interesting, empathetic people. Also you learn how to separate your professional and personal life.

I think that’s one reason I like PBO and FLOTUS so much. I can see that raising in Malia and Sasha, and the influence of Mrs. Robinson, too.

And I think that ease (comfortable in own skin) in life connects with people. I mean, you have to adapt and adjust so much as a matter of course, whereas Romney/GOP/Pundit World stay in a pretty small world that they can control. PBO showed/demonstrated respect to so many people, who I believe responded in kind with their vote.

    — – Today, December 1, 2012 is World AIDS Day. Every year on this day, the world comes together to stand with people affected by HIV/AIDS, to remember those we have lost and to renew our commitment to ending the pandemic once and for all.

Last year on World AIDS Day, President Obama announced ambitious new targets in the global fight against HIV/AIDS, and on the domestic front focused on investment to support the first comprehensive National HIV/AIDS Strategy to fight the epidemic here at home.

One year later, the President’s commitments have translated into real measurable progress. As of today, we are treating over 5 million people with lifesaving medicines for AIDS, up from 1.7 million in 2008, and are on track to treat 6 million people by the end of 2013. This year, we have also reached over 700,000 HIV-positive pregnant women with antiretroviral drugs that will prevent them from passing the virus to their children. We are making real progress, but the fight is not over.

    – — –Make House Republicans middle class by paying them only for days they actually work – –

    – – —Even though House Republicans are going to be in session for only 126 days in 2013, they are still demanding their full $174,000 salary.

Despite this being an off off year election, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor has announced that the House will only be in session for 126 days in 2013. The schedule is continuation of the two weeks off one week on schedule that the Republicans implemented when they gained the majority after the 2010 election. The Senate works the opposite schedule. The Senate schedule traditionally has been three weeks on and one week off per month. When the two schedules are examined side by side, it is easy to see why it takes so long to get anything done in Washington. The House has turned their schedule into an obstruction tactic. It is hard to make legislative progress when one body is MIA for two thirds of the year.

During the fight over the fiscal cliff House Republicans will talk how it is imperative that the nation slashes spending without raising tax, but the one thing they won’t mention is how they are adding to deficit by insisting on being paid when they aren’t working.

THIS – – —->Members of the House are set to be paid $1,380.95 for each day when they are in session in 2013. If they were serious about reducing the deficit, one of the first things that they should do is prorate their pay so that their yearly compensation is based on only the days that they spent in session.

try and jigger the drive in the usb drive to see if there’s any way the comp will read it. That may be your best hope.

  • *cue the world’s tiniest violin*

Gone are the minute-by-minute schedules and the swarm of Secret Service agents. There’s no aide to make his peanut butter and honey sandwiches. Romney hangs around the house, sometimes alone, pecking away at his iPad and e-mailing his CEO buddies, who’ve been swooping in and out of La Jolla to visit. He wrote to one who’s having a liver transplant soon: “I’ll change your bedpan, take you back and forth to treatment.”

By all accounts, the past month has been most difficult on Romney’s wife, Ann, who friends said believed up until the end that ascending to the White House was their destiny. They said she has been crying in private and trying to get back to riding her horses.

[…] Over Thanksgiving, one of Romney’s five sons, Josh, his wife and their four children packed into a single bedroom at the Spanish-style villa on Dunemere Drive here. One friend said they ordered their turkey dinner from Boston Market, the home-style restaurant chain, because there were too many kids running around the house to bother with cooking a feast.

In private, Romney has told friends he has little interest in helping the Republican Party rebuild and rebrand itself.

Advisers also said he felt no need to explain himself after his comments to donors about Obama using the power of incumbency to give “gifts” to women, black and Latino voters leaked into the public sphere. One adviser said Romney regretted the remarks “coming out the way it did.” Fehrnstrom, meanwhile, said, “He was expressing the frustration that any challenger would feel about an incumbent who used the powers of his incumbency — as we would have if the shoe was on the other foot.”

it’s not my fault that she was dropped off at Casa Romney before her 18th birthday.

she went all in with the Willard fantasy…let her choke on it.

I just get tickled everytime I think about it…this week was just fun for me…

Christmastime again at the White House – with FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA hosting for the country.

She said it was THEIR TURN.

Willard said that the President should START PACKING.

FUCK BOTH these overindulged entitled assholes.

If, she didn’t reek of MISS ANN LITERALLY, maybe I’d have some sympathy.

            But, she DOES reek..

            so no sympathy.

          • JojoRaze

            Oh no, I’m not sympathetic…AT.ALL!

It’s just hilarious to me that she thought she was destined for First Lady when the polls and popular belief said otherwise.

Barack Hussein Obama II and Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama are living shade to Mittens’ and especially Miss Ann’s dreams.

Coming from a religion that didn’t see black people until 1978, and by most estimates, still treats black people as second class members of the kingdom of heaven, Miss Ann got the chin-check of life.

A sure way to jinx ones run for the presidency:

Tell lies against and disrespect Barack and Michelle Obama, Join forces with Donald Trump, collaborate with Clinton PUMA’s and have Oscar de la Renta dress your wife.

I told you guys once I saw Ann Romney show up in her Oscar de la Renta outfit, that she would surely be trading loser notes with Cindy McCain in no time.

Oscar de la Renta, the designer to women deluded enough to start measuring for White House curtains.

No time to make Thanksgiving? Why are they still trying to act like these people cook their meals? A single bedroom in a villa could be the equivalent of my first apartment in terms of size. Boo freakin’ hoo. I am holding the tiniest bow for that very tiny violin.

The Susan Rice saga continues. The 2 GOP white women trying to give cover to McCain and Graham took me over the edge. Now the left wants to contribute and continue with the piling on.

    I’m A Liberal…And I Don’t Believe That Senator John McCain Is A Racist
I guess liberals can tell us what is racism and what is not. Good to know.

    I’m A Liberal…And I Don’t Believe That Senator John McCain Is A Racist

I’m a liberal. Actually, I’m a proud liberal. And the truth is, I think the media narrative taking place on the left about Senator John McCain being a racist is utterly, utterly stupid.

When did we on the left decide that anyone who is a woman or a minority can’t be criticized? When did we decide that instead of answering criticism from the right, we should put up smokescreens of “racism”? When did we decide that it’s okay to hurl slanderous accusations at Republican politicians, just because we disagree with them?

    • GOVCHRIS1988

Thank you white liberal who always seems to “impeccably” tell us dumb Negroes what a racial attack is. You know, some days I do find solace in the words of Malcolm X.

      • Ebogan63

The one about ‘foxy white liberals?”
Yes I do find solace in those words, and I will be DAMNED if I have to be lectured by these assholes on what the fuck is RACIST! “When did we decide that it’s okay to hurl slanderous accusations at Republican politicians, just because we disagree with them?”

When these jackasses, who where DIXIECRATS used the ‘southern strategy’ that’s when! Black folks know their history!

        • GOVCHRIS1988

THATS THE ONE!!!! Listen to it like gospel during the campaign. May need it again.

    • Kennymack1971

So it’s just a coincidence that the most vehement attacks from the right have been leveled at Blacks in this administration? These lame ass liberals can have a seat.

    • JojoRaze

I cannot talk about Susan Rice without anger, which is why I haven’t commented. However, the whole situ confirms why I do not trust the Clintonites AT.ALL. Other than Clyburn and PBO, no one has come out to get Ambassador Rice’s back.

No one has yet to answer why Susan Rice was wrong for repeating talking points the CIA gave her. She is not an intelligence agent, she gets intelligence from them. The people who should be thrown under the bus are Hillary and the CIA. This was their mess up and Susan is getting the blame when she was not involved. AT.ALL.

This is straight up and down racism, and even WashPo said it when 80 white men in the House, who have nothing to do with confirmations, are saying not to nominate her.

I have limited by media consumption to here, NYT, CNN and TOD and Deaniac and I could care less about what some fair weather position paper pundit liberals think is racist or not. I have watched the coverage on this and I’ve been black in America for longer than three days.

Not sure who stated it here first but it looks as if Hillary has her fingerprints all over this issue. Something is smelling.

        • Camille

There are no ifs and buts about it:

This is Hillary Clinton at work, but mark my words, she’ll self-destruct before she and Bill can do any more harm with their vindictiveness and obsessive desire to control and have access at all times.

    • Alma98

The commenters are idiots, who the hell are they to say what’s racist and not racist. I guess being black and living it daily doesn’t count huh?

      • Miranda

Their arrogance is really quite breathtaking.

    • dannie22

the author of this tripe anjali sareen, is on twitter. loveladypa went after her. sounds like anjali wants to fit in with her white liberal friends

    • Camille

And yet Anjali and her “liberal” friends seem to think Hillary Clinton is off limits even though she should be the one answering any questions regarding Benghazi.

But any such criticism of Hillary is mysogyny and sexism.

It seems that only Hillary and Sarah Palin could possibly ever be subjected to misogyny and sexism.

Michelle Obama and Susan Rice, not so much. They are fair game. Hmmmm, I wonder whats different?

A detached Romney tends wounds in seclusion after failed White House bid

The man who planned to be president wakes up each morning now without a plan.

Mitt Romney looks out the windows of his beach house here in La Jolla, a moneyed and pristine enclave of San Diego, at noisy construction workers fixing up his next-door neighbor’s home, sending regular updates on the renovation. He devours news from 2,600 miles away in Washington about the “fiscal cliff” negotiations, shaking his head and wondering what if.

By all accounts, the past month has been most difficult on Romney’s wife, Ann, who friends said believed up until the end that ascending to the White House was their destiny. They said she has been crying in private and trying to get back to riding her horses.

    • Kennymack1971

Awwww so sad… my heart bleeds for them.. NOT! BWAH HA HA!

    • edp4bho

Haw haw haw haw….I hate to be mean but as I avoided watching them during the campaign, yesterday I just watched the video where he says about PBO….”start packing” and she says….”it’s our turn now”. What a couple of privileged turds they are. Hi Rikyrah and POU. I’m so enjoying Romney-free days.

      • Camille

I wish they’d just go away already. I don’t even want to hear about their heartache at not having their fake prophecy come true.

God obviously loves President and Mrs Obama infinitely more, so Ann can go sit down with her horrid self.

        • GOVCHRIS1988

Camille, I’m just mean. I sort of feeling you on that, but then I see that “Start Packing” and “Its our turn” video along with the 47% vid, and I just end up guffawing my ass off all day again when I read how much psychological pain they are in. I know I’m wrong, but its like sex, It feels too good.

The gold medal-winning gymnast was so fed up with constant training hundreds of miles away from her family that she considered quitting and going to work at Chick-fil-A instead.

    – — West Baffled By Election Loss – —

—- –Former Rep. Allen West is still wondering how he managed to go from tea party darling to unemployed in two years.

According to Bloomberg.com, West is still baffled about his meteoritic rise and fall.

    – — -WHA’???? – — ->The web site said, “Allen West is still surprised that Florida’s voters have kicked him out of Congress after only two years. ‘Why would anyone want to get rid of a person that is born and raised in the inner city, third of four generations in the military—just an American success story?’ asks West, from the living room of his Palm Beach Gardens home overlooking a pool and golf course. ‘I’m not some guy that came from a rich political family or anything like that,’ he says. ‘I’m just an everyday guy, but I have a passion for my country.'” – –[WHEW LAWD!! –LOL]

    – —Bloomberg also pointed out that West’s loss had a lot to do with his abrasive personality and the fact the country seems to have fallen out of love with the whole tea party movement. [NOT QUITE -LOL]

“Another possibility is that his rapid rise and fall coincided with the public’s equally brief enthusiasm for the mad-as-hell ethos of the tea party. When West was elected two years ago, 40 percent of voters nationwide said they supported the movement, according to exit polls. This year, support was down to 21 percent. West was one of several members of the tea party caucus who lost reelection to the House.

    – – —Black Women’s Roundtable Unites in Support of United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice – —

    — — –*Washington, DC –A diverse group of women leaders and organizations have joined forces with the Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR) to launch a campaign to express their unequivocal support of United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice and to encourage senate and congressional leaders to treat the esteemed public servant with respect. In addition to signing on to an open letter to the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, nearly 100 women from across the country are promoting an online petition in support of Ambassador Rice via personal and organizational networks as well as online social media.

The letter sent to Senate intelligence Committee Chairman Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and committee ranking member Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) said Ambassador Rice has been a role model to all women. “She has excelled throughout her career both in the public and private sector. Her commitment to international peace and the equality of all people should be heralded, not summarily dismissed for political gain and expedience. Hence, we urge all U. S. Senators to afford Ambassador Rice the proper respect appropriate for any other Cabinet-level member of a sitting Administration.”

The letter continues, “We feel it necessary to remind the Senate of Ambassador Rice’s impeccable credentials because of the failure of some to respect her role as the United States Ambassador and leader in foreign policy. While some members of the Senate have pushed back on their rush to judgment in the press regarding Ambassador Rice’s prepared remarks on the attack in Benghazi, we feel that the public integrity and reputation of this brilliant woman, who serves our country with great dignity, has been unfairly and unnecessarily attacked.”

Now Feinstein is back playing her double agent role in the Senate courtesy of us Obama supporters who gave her the record breaking number of votes ever cast for a Senator.

She should understand that most of those votes were really for President Obama not for her – and to keep Harry Reid in charge.
