Saturday Open Thread: Bikers For Obama

This group was started in 2008 to support President Obama. Since its inception, they’ve grown to a full foundation supporting many initiatives in urban communities across the country, and yes, they will be riding again for the re-election of President Barack Obama!

Here is one more short video by Daydream Filmworks about black bikers:

Tulsa Police Identify Victims In ‘Unprecedented’ Shooting Spree

    TULSA, Oklahoma –

Police call it unprecedented in Tulsa. They say it appears someone drove around North Tulsa Thursday night, randomly shooting people who were walking or in their yards.

Three were killed, and two survived.

When you hear homicide detectives shaking their heads and saying, “This is bad,” you know something out of the ordinary has happened.

All these shootings took place within seven hours, and the victims range in age from 31 to 54. There’s nothing that makes police believe this is gang related.

Police say they are looking for a white man seen driving an older white truck in the area of the shootings.

I just heard this on NPR. All the victims were black. How ironic that you feature today, cyclists from Tulsa. There are too many ironies I’m coming across this week. I said a bit ago, these rabid creatures are trying to begin a race war, and all should be on guard. All because of that great man in the Whitehouse. Shame before God.

      • edp4bho

One other thing. The media would have us believe we need to be afraid to be in our own communities, but I have a greater fear of walking on the street and being gunned down by some racist riding past me in his/her car. Too easy, you know?

    – – –President Obama Marks Passover with Seder Dinner – –

    – —President Barack Obama is expected to mark the beginning of Passover with a traditional Seder meal at the White House.

Friday night’s event will be led by Jewish members of the president’s staff.

Thursday, Obama released a Passover message, saying he’s “proud” to take part in such a “special” tradition.

Remembering the Exodus, he also noted the attacks many Jewish people have faced over the years, including the March 19 shooting at a Jewish school in France that left four dead.

“Jews around the world will renew their faith that liberty will ultimately prevail over tyranny,” he said. “They will give thanks for the blessings of freedom, while remembering those who are still not free.”

“And they will ask one of our life’s most difficult questions: Once we’ve passed from bondage to liberty, how do we make the most of all that God has given us?” Obama continued.

Passover is the weeklong Jewish holiday celebrating God’s deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.

Obama has held a Seder dinner every year since taking office.

    – –“Painter of Light” Thomas Kinkade dies at 54 – – —

    – — —One of the most successful artists of all time, prolific painter Thomas Kinkade – the self-described “Painter of Light” – died Friday at the age of 54.

A spokesperson for the Kinkade family said the artist died at home in Los Gatos, Calif., apparently of natural causes.

Kinkade’s paintings were anything but controversial, depicting scenes of a light-filled America with a heavy emphasis on home, hearth and church. His sentimental scenes of country gardens and pastoral landscapes in dewy morning light were beloved by many but criticized by the art establishment.

The painter once said that he had something in common with Walt Disney and Norman Rockwell: He wanted to make people happy.

Those light-infused renderings are often prominently displayed in buildings, malls, and on products — generally depicting tranquil scenes with lush landscaping and streams running nearby. Many contain images from Bible passages.

“I’m a warrior for light,” Kinkade, a self-described devout Christian, told the San Jose Mercury News in 2002, a reference to the medieval practice of using light to symbolize the divine. “With whatever talent and resources I have, I’m trying to bring light to penetrate the darkness many people feel.”

Hi GLH, POU. Coincidentally, I was just looking at him via Google a couple days ago. I have a book of his paintings. They are serene, while being a bit fantastical, but I refer to them when the ugly gets to be too ugly for my taste. Such a shame that someone that painted “light” would be so criticized by the fartsy art community. To each his own. God bless him for trying to bring a bit of peace to a world of eternal conflict. Enjoy your day.

      • Exactly. Is this what it’s come to?

“Kinkade’s paintings were anything but controversial,”

How to make the gender gap worse
Did Scott Walker just give Obama an opening to drive an even bigger wedge between women and the GOP?

There’s been much discussion this week of the gender gap in the presidential race, which has exploded since Republicans decided in February to pick a fight with President Obama over contraception.

A survey of voters in 12 swing states released at the start of the week showed Obama’s lead over Mitt Romney among women surging to 18 points, compared to just 1 with men. Among independent women in those states, Obama is now ahead by 14 points – a complete turnaround from late last year, when he trailed Romney by 5 with the same group. The sizable overall leads that Obama now enjoys are largely the result of this movement of women.

But as National Journal’s Ron Brownstein showed, the shift is coming from a very specific subset of the female population: college-educated white women. As Brownstein explained,

They are consistently the portion of the white electorate that shows the most receptivity to activist government and also tend toward the most liberal positions on social issues, from abortion to gay rights to the availability of contraception.

In other words, the contraception debate (and, probably, the national controversy over Virginia’s mandatory ultrasound law) is probably at the heart of Romney’s – and the GOP’s – gender problem. The hopeful spin from Republicans is that it will go away once Romney is clear of the GOP primaries and the national conversation is again focused on the economy. It may turn out that there’s something to this.

But it’s also possible the gender gap could get worse for the GOP. For that to happen, the party would have to do something to turn off blue-collar, non-college-educated white women – “waitress moms,” as Brownstein refers to them. Right now, these women seem largely unmoved by the contraception debate, and by Democratic efforts to paint the GOP as culturally extreme. But what if there were an issue that ties gender and the economic interests of waitress moms together?

Greg Sargent flagged an interesting possibility today involving Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who just scrapped the state’s equal pay law. As Sargent notes, Walker is now a nationally significant figure, thanks to the efforts to recall him. He’s also a celebrated figure on the right, which is why Romney hailed him as “hero” last week.

This could put Romney in an uncomfortable spot. Sargent got Obama’s campaign to lash out at the repeal and to call on Romney to take a stand; if the issue is forced, Romney will have to choose between spitting in the face of a conservative icon and causing himself immense intraparty grief, or giving Obama an opening with waitress moms.

Notably, the last Democratic president to win reelection did so on the strength of a gender gap comparable to the one measured in the new swing state poll. In the 1996 election, Clinton managed to extend his appeal to blue-collar women with a stream of relatively noncontroversial initiatives – school uniforms, the V-chip, an end to “drive-through” child deliveries – that showed waitress moms that he was mindful of their concerns.

Obama campaign pushes Romney on Wisconsin overturn of equal-pay law
By Justin Sink – 04/06/12 02:37 PM ET

After a week in which Democrats and the Obama campaign have argued that Republicans are waging a “war on women” in an effort to solidify their base of female voters in the coming election, the president’s campaign team is seizing Friday on news that controversial Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) quietly overturned his state’s equal-pay law.

Obama’s campaign team said Friday that Walker’s move was evidence Republicans are willing to “undermine not only women’s health care, but also their economic security,” and demanded that presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney comment on Walker’s move.

“Mitt Romney has repeatedly dismissed the effect of Republican efforts to rollback access to contraception and other health care services on the women’s vote, saying that he would appeal to women by talking about their economic concerns. If this is the case does Romney think women should have ability to take their bosses to court to get the same pay as their male coworkers? Or does he stand with Governor Walker against this?” said Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith in a statement.

Smith noted that Romney “repeatedly praised Governor Scott Walker’s leadership, calling him a ‘hero’ and ‘a man of courage’ ” while campaigning in Wisconsin. Walker faces a recall election this summer after his move to prohibit public-sector employees from forming unions drew ire from many in the state.

While Democrats are encouraged about the headway that they’ve made with female voters —Obama leads Romney with women by 18 percent in swing states, according to a USA Today/Gallup poll released this week — they believe that opening up their case beyond the sole issue of contraception is crucial to make the topic a sticking point in the campaign.

On Thursday, the DNC seized on a caterpillar analogy Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus made when defending Republicans and trying to make the point that the GOP was not waging a “war on women.” Later in the day, White House press secretary Jay Carney said the president believed women should be admitted to Augusta National Golf Club, where the Masters golf tournament is under way. Democrats likely wanted to see if one of the president’s political opponents would oppose opening up the club to female membership.

    – —–The Boston Globe takes stock of the GOP race today with this front-page headline: “Santorum moves fuel predictions he will exit.” Team Santorum is taking a few days off for the Easter weekend and is saying all the right things about getting back on the trail in force come Monday. But, among other things, one party analyst finds it odd that Santorum has yet to make a major ad buy in his home state of Pennsylvania ahead of the April 24 primary.

Santorum is trailing Mitt Romney in the polls there, and a home-field loss for the former senator, who got trounced in his last re-election bid, would hurt. “He has a very risky situation,” says Newt Gingrich’s Pennsylvania campaign chief.

Texas-Sized Safety Net Supports County Voting 83% Against Obama

John Loepky’s story is one of Texan self-reliance. Starting out in the mid-1980s with less than $100 in his pocket, Loepky first found work on farms and by the mid- 1990s owned his own land. Today he coaxes cotton, peanuts and wheat out of 3,300 acres of parched soil in Gaines County, getting as much as $2.4 million in revenue on a good year.

In bad years — like 2011 — he can rely on the government for help. Record-low rainfall triggered record-high crop insurance payouts of $125 million last year to local farmers, with taxpayers subsidizing $30.8 million of the $46.9 million of the premiums paid in the county that year. Loepky received about $1 million, which paid half of his loans for the year.

Landowners such as Loepky who rely on the federal safety net are less fond of the man who heads the government offering it. Gaines voters backed John McCain — who voted against reauthorizing farm payments in 2008 — over subsidy-supporting Barack Obama by 83 percent to 16 percent, the most lopsided margin among the top 10 aid-receiving counties in the U.S.

“Republicans understand business better than Democrats,” says Loepky, 47. “We need strong banks, low taxes. We need a safety net for farmers, but we need other things too.”

Analysis: In Iraq, oil majors play north versus south

…The dispute over oil is at the heart of a wider disagreement between Iraq’s central government in Baghdad and the Kurdish region, which are also increasingly at odds over regional autonomy, land and political influence.

Iraq has ambitious plans to develop its huge southern oilfields – potentially the world’s biggest source of new oil over the next few years – and few oil firms dare risk being barred from such a bonanza by angering Baghdad.

Iraqi Kurdistan says Exxon committed to oil deal

(Reuters) – The chief executive of U.S. oil major Exxon Mobil (XOM.N) on Thursday reaffirmed the company’s commitment to its oil deal with Iraq’s autonomous northern Kurdish region, a statement from the Kurdish presidency website said.

Iraq’s central government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) have a long-standing feud over control of oil in the north and the announcement of an oil contract between Exxon and the KRG last October infuriated Baghdad.

    – —–After the National Review’s John Derbyshire penned an unbelievably offensive and racist screed in Taki’s Magazine advising white Americans to stay away from black Americans, a firestorm has predictably erupted over whether his views will be sanctioned by the larger conservative movement. Derbyshire told ThinkProgress that his column urging the majority of Americans to “avoid concentrations of blacks not all known to you personally” was not satire, but in fact a “social commentary.”

    – –On the National Review’s website, editor Rich Lowry called Derbyshire’s column “appalling” and asserted that “no one at National Review” shares his views. But Lowry did not indicate whether Derbyshire would continue to be employed. Does the National Review have a no tolerance policy for racism?

TARP master freezes pay for 3 CEOs

WASHINGTON, April 7 (UPI) — Chief executives at three corporations that still owe bailout money will be denied raises for a second year, the U.S. Treasury Department said Friday.

Patricia Geoghegan, the special master for the Troubled Assets Relief Program or TARP, made the decision, CNN reported.

The CEOs of General Motors Co., AIG, and Ally Financial are to receive the same compensation they did in 2011 with most of their pay tied to stock performance.

    – —Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) quietly signed a bill last night that repeals a law that gave women and others more power to challenge wage discrimination. The Equal Pay Enforcement Act, passed in 2009, gave employers more power to press charges against employers to challenge unfair pay practices, allowing people to plead their case in state courts, instead of the more costly federal court system.

    – — The state legislature passed the Republican-backed repeal bill on party-line votes last week, and Walker waited until almost the last possible minute before signing it. As the Huffington Post’s Amanda Terkel explains, the Equal Pay Enforcement Act could have helped women in the badger state:

Women earn 77 cents for every dollar that men make. In Wisconsin, it’s 75 cents, according to the Wisconsin Alliance for Women’s Health (WAWH), which also estimates that families in the state “lose more than $4,000 per year due to unequal pay.” […]

Sara Finger, executive director of WAWH, said that the repeal was a “demoralizing attack on women’s rights, health, and wellbeing.”

‘U.S. aid to Israel no longer sacred’
Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has warned his government needs higher taxes to help pay for anti-missile defense.

    Published: April 2, 2012 at 3:13 PM

TEL AVIV, Israel, April 2 (UPI) — Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has warned Israelis his government needs higher taxes to help pay for anti-missile defense, though he’s no doubt counting on U.S. military aid to help him out.

But as the United States has to tighten its own belt and cut defense spending by up to $600 billion, Globes business daily commentator Ran Dagoni cautioned: “U.S. aid to Israel is longer sacred.

“U.S military aid to Israel is no longer a fixed point in relations between the two countries.

“The threat to American aid to Israel (and in fact to every other foreign aid plan) is, of course, a result of the budget noose around Washington’s neck.”

There’s no sign yet of major cutbacks in U.S. aid, which includes $3 billion a year in military assistance that’s vital to Israel’s military as it faces the threat of massive missile and rocket bombardment from Iran, Syria, Hezbollah in Lebanon and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

But the whole issue of U.S. aid to Israel is gathering steam, for political as well as economic reasons, and is being debated within the United States to a degree not seen for many years.

Walter Pincus of The Washington Post kicked it off Oct. 18 by urging, as Americans have to tighten their belts, a re-evaluation of U.S. assistance to the Jewish state after Netanyahu ordered hefty cuts in Israel’s defense spending.

“If Israel can reduce its defense spending because of its domestic economic problems, shouldn’t the United States — which must cut military costs because of its major budget deficit — consider reducing its aid to Israel?” he asked.

    Read more: http://www.upi.com/Business_News/Security-Industry/2012/04/02/US-aid-to-Israel-no-longer-sacred/UPI-31321333393980/#ixzz1rMxlbYHz

Bank wants Missouri Rep. Cleaver to pay $1.5 million on car wash loan

Steve Kraske and Dave Helling | The Kansas City Star

U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver’s car wash headache is raging once again.

The bank that loaned the Kansas City congressman and his wife $1.3 million in 2002 to buy the Grandview Auto Wash at 12204 Blue Ridge Extension is now demanding payment of more than $1.5 million, after the Cleavers repeatedly fell behind on repaying the loan.

The suit, filed last week in Jackson County Circuit Court, said the demand for repayment came after three attempts to delay foreclosure. Bank of America also is seeking attorney’s fees and a receiver to protect collateral.

    – — —Students from Bethune-Cookman University among other colleges in Florida have embarked on a three-day, 41-mile journey from Daytona Beach to Sanford, Fla. to protest what they perceive as the improper handling of the Trayvon Martin case by Sanford authorities.

Organized under an umbrella organization called The Dream Defenders, the students have organized the march to pay respectful homage to the historic event in which Dr. Martin Luther King led a contingent of civil rights activists on a journey from Selma to Montgomery, Ala.

The Dream Defenders coordinated the three-day protest via Facebook and Twitter. Their logo features an image of Martin Luther King wearing a hoodie.

“The group began assembling at Daisy Stocking Park on Third Street in Daytona Beach about noon Friday and set out on the first led of the march [at] about 2:40 p.m.,” the Orlando Sentinel reports.

March coordinator Gabriel Pendas, who is an alumnus of Florida State University, told the paper that the marchers will rest at churches during the night.

Joyce Malawi is Malawi’s new president
    — –

    – – — A milestone for southern Africa today, by way of Malawi: Joyce Banda was sworn in as president to become the first female leader in the region, reports the BBC. Banda takes over from Bingu wa Mutharika, who died of a heart attack on Thursday but whose death was confirmed by the government only today.

Why the delay? The AP and BBC suspect a power struggle over who would succeed him. Banda had been his vice president since 2009, but the two had become fierce political enemies. She apparently won out over the late president’s brother, the foreign affairs minister. Banda will serve out Mutharika’s term, which ends in 2014.

    – – –Mitt Romney Breaks Another Law By Hiding $10,000 Donation to Hate Group – — –

    – – – – –A person who is inclined to conceal their true feelings and intentions, or not to disclose requested information is considered secretive and it is well within reason to distrust such a person if they are seeking a political office. The only reason a politician would conceal information from voters is to obscure questionable business practices associated with their political office or to conceal damaging financial information that may show unlawful or dubious activities to avoid paying taxes or circumvent regulations. It is important for presidential candidates to disclose prior years’ tax returns so voters can judge whether or not the candidate is trustworthy or if there are potential conflicts of interest that may influence their decision-making process. There are federal disclosure requirements for presidential candidates, but Willard Romney claims he is exempt from reporting all the details of his business investments made through Bain Capital because of confidentiality agreements with Bain. It becomes obvious then, that Romney is attempting to hide something from the American people.

    — – -SKIP – – —

    – – -On Friday, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) released previously undisclosed IRS documents that revealed a donation from a Romney PAC in Alabama to NOM that may be a violation of California disclosure laws because it was made with express goal of influencing a California election and did not show up on Romney’s PAC filings with the Federal Election Commission. Romney’s PAC, “Free and Strong America” and NOM did not disclose the donation in California which was required because it was made in the final weeks of the contentious Prop 8 campaign. It is a shady practice, but establishing a PAC in a state with less stringent disclosure laws like Alabama is a frequent practice to conceal and protect donors from unwanted publicity such as donating $10,000 to a hate group intent on pushing discriminatory laws like California’s Prop 8 which has been struck down time and again in the 9th Circuit Court.

    – — –Allen West: I’ll Be VP If God Ordains It – —

    – – —Tea party Rep. Allen West (R-FL) said on Friday that he would accept the Republican vice presidential nomination if it was the “right fit.”

Earlier this week, failed GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin first floated West’s name at a possible “rogue” pick for 2012. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R), an early supporter of Mitt Romney, agreed that West would be “good” in the VP slot.

On Friday, West told CNN’s Kyra Phillips that he had “never been out on a dinner date” with Romney, but he’d be willing to join the ticket.

“Yeah, well, right now, you know, the focus is, of course, being a good congressional representative,” West explained. “But if someone were to make that call to me, which I really doubt is ever going to happen, you would have to make sure that it is something that God would ordain for you, and you’d have to talk to your wife, my wife and my two daughters about. But we have always stepped up to the plate to serve our country. And if it’s the right fit, then I will do so.”

    – — COP ID;d And SUED in 2008 RACISM Case – —

    – – –<i>In a broadcast exclusive, we reveal the name of the police officer who allegedly killed 68-year-old Kenneth Chamberlain, the retired African-American Marine who was shot dead in his own home in White Plains, New York, in November after he inadvertently triggered his medical alert pendant. Documented in audio recordings, the White Plains police reportedly used a racial slur, burst through Chamberlain’s door, tasered him, then shot him dead. “The last time I actually really saw my father, other than the funeral, was at the hospital, with his eyes wide open, his tongue hanging out his mouth, and two bullet holes in his chest,” said Kenneth Chamberlain, Jr. “And I’m staring at my father, wondering, ‘What happened?'”

THIS – – – ->The alleged shooter, Officer Anthony Carelli, is due in court later this month in an unrelated 2008 police brutality case. He is accused of being the most brutal of a group of officers who allegedly beat two arrestees of Jordanian descent and called them “rag heads.” We speak to Gus Dimopoulos, attorney for Jerry and Sal Hatter. “We allege that the police officers, while in the custody of the White Plains Police Department back at the station, you know, severely beat Jerry while being restrained by handcuffs. They hit him in the face with a nightstick, they kicked, they punched, they punched him, and then essentially charged him with a crime,” Dimopoulos said.

    – —-The Many Other Trayvons – —

    – – – – — Police and racist killings of African Americans are horrifyingly familiar. So why the protest movement around the case of Trayvon Martin–and why now?

Rev. Jesse Jackson, speaking at a March 30 press conference with Black family members of young people recently shot and killed by police in the Chicago area, put his finger on the issue. The mainstream media “has adjusted” to the routine deaths of African Americans at the hands of cops–but their family members haven’t.

“The traditional media did not break this story,” Jackson said. “It was Facebook and Twitter that really broke the story. Here, when young brother Watts is killed, it’s a one-night story, and we move on and wait for the next one.”

Jackson was referring to the police murder of Stephon Watts, the young Black man with autism shot by police in Calumet City outside Chicago in February. Stephon’s father, Steven Watts, also spoke:

My son has autism, and he just wanted to get out of the house. He saw the police. He’s afraid of the police, and he just wanted to get past them. He had a butter knife in his hand, and just because he had a butter knife in his hand, the officers came to the conclusion that it was okay to use deadly force.

    – – – –SKIP – – –

    – – –-A century ago, such killings were commonplace in the South–lynchings aimed at terrorizing a Black population denied basic and political rights under the Jim Crow system, America’s version of apartheid. These days, the majority of such racist killings are carried out by police–sometimes even African American ones–as part of a system of social control that author and activist Michelle Alexander calls “the new Jim Crow.”

My thoughts on the whole Obama Supreme Court situation. While the Supreme Court has help with minorities getting their rights, the Supreme court is not infallible. The Dredd Scott decision made the fugitive slave act applicable to even the co called free states. Also, while it was overturned Plessy versus Ferguson codified segregation.

      – — -Your citations were in the following: I kinda remembered the —“WOLFE v COLORADO CASE” being –REVERSED/OVERTURNED by the “MAPP v OHIO” – – –

      – – –10 Overturned Supreme Court Cases

      — — –3: Wolf v. Colorado (1949)

The Fourth Amendment protects U.S. citizens from unreasonable searches and seizures by government officials. In 1949, Dr. Julius Wolf was convicted of performing illegal abortions, but he claimed the evidence against him had been seized illegally, without a proper search warrant or probable cause. One of his former patients reported that she had gone to him for an abortion, and police entered his office without a warrant and seized an appointment book. The women in the book also reported that Wolf had performed abortions, and this evidence was used to convict him. When the case made it to the Supreme Court, it ruled 6-3 against Wolf. The heart of the matter was the federal exclusion rule, which discouraged improper search and seizure by ruling that all evidence collected illegally wasn’t admissible in court. Wolf had run afoul of a state law, and the court decided that the exclusion rule didn’t apply to states. The majority opinion felt that there were other, less restrictive methods to discourage illegal searches, and that neither the Fourth or 14th Amendments necessitated the exclusion rule.
In that case, authorities searched DollRee Mapp’s house for a fugitive — with no proof of a proper warrant. Mapp reported that they waved a piece of paper at her that she couldn’t identify as a warrant, and no actual warrant was ever produced. Police found a cache of pornography that violated Ohio’s obscenity laws, and the woman was convicted of obscenity based on that evidence. The intervening 12 years had shown that the “other methods” of discouraging illegal search and seizure weren’t working, so the Court reversed itselfwithin a surprisingly short period of time

    – — –National Review Fires Derbyshire – – —

    – – —- –National Review editor Rich Lowry does the right thing, announcing that John Derbyshire will no longer be writing for the influential conservative outlet:

His latest provocation, in a webzine, lurches from the politically incorrect to the nasty and indefensible. We never would have published it, but the main reason that people noticed it is that it is by a National Review writer. Derb is effectively using our name to get more oxygen for views with which we’d never associate ourselves otherwise. So there has to be a parting of the ways. Derb has long danced around the line on these issues, but this column is so outlandish it constitutes a kind of letter of resignation. It’s a free country, and Derb can write whatever he wants, wherever he wants. Just not in the pages of NR or NRO, or as someone associated with NR any longer.

Lowry and the National Review deserve credit for finally cutting ties with Derbyshire’s long record of hateful rhetoric.
