The incalculable cost of mass incarceration

Nonviolent offenders serving life sentences without parole are a cash cow for prison profiteers
    Jill Filipovic November 22, 2013

As a college student in Baton Rouge, La., Clarence Aaron played football, worked summers as a longshoreman and volunteered in his community. Like many college students, he eventually did something very foolish. For Aaron, it involved drugs: He introduced a friend to a cocaine dealer and played a minor role in two drug deals, one of which did not even go through.

For that mistake, he will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

He is not alone. Nathan Pettus stole three belts from a department store. Damon Caliste stole digital cameras from Wal-Mart. Alexander Surry was in possession of a single crack rock. Leopoldo Hernandez-Miranda was convicted nearly 20 years ago of marijuana possession with intent to distribute; he is now 74 years old. Timothy Tyler mailed small amounts of LSD to an undercover agent he thought was a fellow Grateful Dead fan.

All of them are serving sentences of life without parole, or LWOP. They and other nonviolent LWOP prisoners are costing U.S. taxpayers over $1.7 billion dollars more than if LWOP were not a sentencing option, according to a report (PDF) released this month by the American Civil Liberties Union. And much of that money is going to a slew of private companies that profit from mass incarceration.

Reading comments on some of the different reviews for “12 Years a Slave” has been quite the education for me.

Even 150 years later, many white people don’t want to acknowledge the horrors of plantation slavery, and get angry at any cinematic portrayal where the human chattels don’t act like Mammy and Uncle Remus.

      • malletgirl02

Your post reminds me of why I refuse to watch Gone with the Wind or read the book of the same title, even though the Miss Annes of the world try to make me feel bad for doing so. It is the sanitized version of slavery. The plot pretty much says the slaves were bad for escaping. I also blame “Gone with the Wind” for infusing its sanitized version of slavery into the white conscience.

    - – —Kendrick Johnson’s family waited months for hundreds of hours of surveillance video, hoping it would answer their questions. It only raised others.
Rather than showing how their 17-year-old son’s body ended up in a school gym mat in January, the four cameras inside the Valdosta, Georgia, gymnasium showed only a few collective seconds of Johnson, jogging. The camera fixed on the gym mats was blurry.

Compounding the family’s suspicions was the nature of the gym videos. They’re jumpy, with students intermittently appearing and vanishing, and they bear no obvious timestamps.

The Johnsons’ attorneys were not shy in stating their suspicion that someone could have tampered with the videos.

“They know their child did not climb into a wrestling mat, get stuck and die. Where is that video?” Benjamin Crump asked.

Attorney Chevene King questioned why time codes weren’t shown in the videos.

    — -Giving Black Boys a Chance to Run the Tech Industry – -[How 'bout ---"YOUNG MEN".]
    – - -Last month Twitter found itself the latest major tech company to face criticism for a lack of diversity—a jarring lack of diversity, to be more precise. It was revealed that the company’s entire board of directors consists of white males.
The revelation generated plenty of hand-wringing about a well-covered topic, namely the underrepresentation of women and ethnic minorities, particularly African Americans, in the tech industry.
What was especially disturbing about the coverage of Twitter’s lack of diversity is its CEO’s seeming indifference to the topic.
    – - –SNIP – -
But while others continue to focus on the problem of a lack of diversity in the tech space, a new nonprofit venture aims to find a solution. Christina Lewis Halpern, a journalist who has written for publications like the Wall Street Journal, has launched All Star Code, which aims to prepare African-American boys for careers in the tech sector.
Programs have launched in recent years to increase the number of young women interested in pursuing careers in tech, among them Girls Who Code and Girls in Tech, but young boys of color remain largely overlooked in the tech-recruiting landscape. Halpern launched All Star Code to address this need. “[We are] dedicated to closing the systematic opportunity gap between young men of color and the tech sector,” she said in an interview with The Root. “In order to do that, we attract, prepare and ultimately place talented young men of color in the tech pipeline.”

Although the primary training boot camp will take place next summer, Halpern has already begun conducting miniature workshops in which boys ages 14 to 17 spend five hours with tech experts from companies like Facebook, Spotify, AOL and OnSwipe. The boys learn about career options and hone their skills. A second miniworkshop will take place today, Saturday, Nov. 23.

      Good Morning Alma!

I was catching up on POU and noticed you mentioned your previous cholecystectomy (gallbladder) surgery and mentioned your alarm that clips were left in. The clips are standard in the procedure. After they remove your gallbladder, they insert a clip(s) where your gallbladder once connected to your liver via your cystic duct and cystic artery. I read lots of surgical reports as well, and the clips are widely used. I hope that helps.

    – - –Whoopi Goldberg Sells Interracial Romantic Comedy to ABC

    — -According to HollywoodReporter.com, Whoopi Goldberg, along with former NBC head Ben Silverman and Principato Young, has sold a comedy spec script to ABC entitled Iman & Andy. The half-hour focuses on the romance of two 20-something interracial coworkers who work at a Huffington Post-like online magazine that have been happily dating in secret for months.
Their dating bliss is quickly put into a tailspin when their new
editor-in-chief arrives on the scene, exposes them as a couple and
forces them to team up on a relationship advice vlog, with the whole
office and millions of viewers now following their relationship.

The single-camera comedy is written by Angela Ruhinda, with Goldberg and Tom Leonardis of Whoop Inc. as well as Electus’ Jimmy Fox, Silverman and Principato Young Entertainment attached as executive producers. ”Iman & Andy is a brilliant spec script with a specific voice and point of view.
Whoopi’s involvement has already been profound and we are thrilled to expand our relationship with Principato Young Entertainment and ABC,” said Silverman, with Goldberg adding: “I’m so excited we are doing this together. I think this is going to be fun and interesting television.”

Oh they would never go there Alma lol. While I love the chemistry between actors like Goldwyn and Washington and Mison and Berharie (hope I spelled their names right). You know there are black and black couples who are sexy and fun and I’m pretty sure they can find actors to portray that. Hollywood is so frustrating. Their minds are so closed.

          • Alma98

They tried with that NBC spy show but didn’t give it a chance. I expect to see a lot more wm/bw shows in the future now that Scandal is a big hit.

          • crazycanuck

And Sleepy Hollow. I expect it also. One thing works and Hollywood has to copy it a billion times over.

          • TresL

NBC tried their Scandal rip-off with Megan Good last year but the show was cancelled after one season. I can’t even remember the name of the show. I watched it but it moved really slow compared to Scandal. It had some interesting plot twists but it didn’t make it.

          • crazycanuck

Typical, I vaguely remember that show. One thing works, and the crowd thinks, throw two other people together and it’s bound to work. Not thinking that many things came together to make the original work so well.

Yes, I think that was it. Thanks.

          • TresL

NBC’s Undercovers lasted one season with Boris Kodjoe and a black actress from England. I can’t think of her name (maybe Gugu something). There were episodes I really liked; others were so-so but, they had great chemistry and it was a show that had promise if it had been allowed, at least, a second season.

          • crazycanuck

Hey TresL, unfortunately I never heard of that show. I think a lot of things have to come together. The story, the actors, the chemistry, the acting, the directing. That is hard to do.

          • TresL

It’s been probably about 4 years ago and I think it was a take on the Jolie-Pitt movie Mr. and Mrs. ? I don’t remember the name but they were husband and wife spies trying to kill each other. Well, in Undercovers, they were both spies whose cover was their catering business. They would get assignments all over the world and we’d get to see Boris in tuxes (a la Bond) and his wife in beautiful gowns as they’d solve these international cases for the government and make it home in time to cater their next event.

          • crazycanuck

Oh that actually sounds interesting. I love Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Unfortunately along with everything I mentioned, networks never give show anytime to catch on anymore. It’s a shame.
