Saturday Open Thread: Black Firsts and Innovations

To end this week’s theme, I will focus on Hazel Johnson and Charlotte E. Ray.

Hazel Johnson was the first African American woman to become a general in the U.S. Army. She was appointed the Chief of the Army Nurse Corps in 1979. Johnson held a doctorate in education administration from Catholic University (1978) and had honorary degrees from Morgan State University, Villanova University, and the University of Maryland.

Johnson first became interested in nursing while growing up on a farm in Westchester, Pennsylvania.  Her career began when we she received her nursing degree from the Harlem Hospital in New York City in 1950.  She then attended Villanova University where she received her bachelor’s and soon afterwards joined the Army Nurse Corps in 1955.

Johnson served in Japan at a U.S. Army Evacuation Hospital.  She served at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1960 where she was a staff and operating room nurse.  Between 1963 and 1967, she was an operating room instructor and supervisor while on a tour of three different hospitals.  Johnson reached the rank of major in 1967.

From 1969 to 1973, she helped develop new sterilizing methods for the Army’s Field Hospital Systems as a staff member of the Army Medical Research and Development Command.  In 1974, Johnson was promoted to Colonel and appointed the director of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Nursing, an extension of the University of Maryland’s nursing school.

In 1978, Johnson was sent to South Korea where she was the chief of the department of nursing at the largest U.S. Army hospital in that country.  In May 1979, she returned to Washington D.C. where she was appointed General.  A military ceremony was held in her honor at the Pentagon, where  U.S. Army Surgeon General Julius Richmond pinned on her the brigadier general star.  Johnson was also sworn in as the sixteenth Chief of the Army Nurse Corps.

Hazel Johnson retired from the U.S. Army in 1984.  In her post-Army career she has served as an advisor to a number of surgeons general.  In 1997 Johnson was appointed adjunct professor of nursing at Georgetown University.  She has also served in a similar capacity at the University of Maryland.

General Hazel Johnson passed away on August 5, 2011 in Washington, D.C.

Drawing_of_Charlotte_RayCharlotte E. Ray, the first African American woman to practice law in the United States, was born on January 13, 1850 in New York City.  Her father, Reverend Charles Bennett Ray, was a prominent New York abolitionist and minister who served as pastor of the Bethesda Congregational Church and was the owner of the Colored American, one of the leading African American newspapers of the antebellum era.  Her mother, Charlotte Augusta Burroughs Ray, was raised in Savannah, Georgia.  Charlotte Ray was the youngest of three girls.

Ray spent her first years in New York City but by 1850 her parents had moved to Washington, D.C. where she entered the Institution for the Education of Colored Youth, the only school in the Washington, D.C. area that allowed African American girls to become pupils.

Ray graduated from the Institution in 1869 at the age of 19.  Howard University, then about four years old, hired her as a teacher for its Preparatory and Normal Department, the part of the university that trained school teachers.  Ray, however was not satisfied with training others to teach.  Her ambition instead was to attend the university’s law school.  Howard University’s Law School, however, discouraged women from enrolling and Ray was forced to apply under the name “C.E. Ray” to disguise her gender.  University officials reluctantly accepted her application and she attended classes while continuing to teach in the Preparatory and Normal Department.  Ray matriculated at the law school for three years, from 1869 to 1872 where she concentrated on commercial law. Upon completion of the program in 1872 Ray became the first black woman to graduate from an American law school and receive a law degree.  In fact she was only the third American woman of any race to complete law school.

Ray achieved another first when on April 23, 1872 she was admitted to the bar in the District of Columbia which had recently removed the word “male” from its requirements.

Ray opened her own law office in Washington, D.C. but found it difficult to make a living as an attorney due to racial and gender bias.  She returned to New York in 1879 and became a Brooklyn school teacher.

By this point, Ray had become an advocate for women’s suffrage.  She was a delegate to the 1876 conference of the National Woman’s Suffrage Association.  In 1895 Ray joined the newly formed National Association of Colored Women.  In 1897 she moved to a suburban community on Long Island, Woodside, New York.

Little is known about Ray’s personal life after she returned to New York.  In 1886 at the age of 36, she married a man named Fraim but it is not clear how long the marriage lasted.  There were no children.  Charlotte E. Ray passed away in Woodside, New York on January 4, 1911.

—-☻—-Weekly Address: Congress Must Compromise to Stop the Impact of the Sequester – –

    — — – — In his weekly address, President Obama tells the American people that a series of harmful budget cuts—called the sequester—have taken effect because Congress failed to act. Because Republicans in Congress refused to compromise to close tax loopholes for the wealthiest Americans, -hundreds of thousands of Americans will lose their jobs or see their paycheck reduced, and middle class families will be hurt. Congress must join the President now to replace these cuts with a balanced approach that reduces our deficit while also making smart investments in areas that help our economy grow.

—[Reaction 2 THIS: – -“GOP Leaders Insist Debate On Taxes ‘Is Over’”]:-

    – – –☻Margie Robinson
In other words, “We don’t want to solve the nation’s fiscal problems.” Just as you can’t run a household without adequate sources of revenue, you can’t run the government without adequate sources of revenue. To protect corporations and the richest Americans, republicans are only willing to make cuts to programs that impact the middle class and the poor, and I find this very disturbing because it is we who are the major source of revenue for their salaries and benefits. They squeal like stuck pigs when President Obama mentions that they’re the party of the rich, and despite their protests, they prove it by not wanting to close tax loopholes that allow the richest Americans and corporations to avoid paying their fair share of taxes.

    – –☻Marie Harris
This is so sad and so maddening. The GOP has created this crisis: The teaparty runs the congress; Boehner is totally ineffective; McConnell’s abuse of the filibuster is unprecedented. The hatred for Obama has so twisted the party, they have become deranged and their destruction of government is criminal.

    – – –Florida sinkhole that swallowed man continues to deepen

    – —- –The sinkhole that opened under a Florida home Thursday night, swallowing a man in his bed, continued to grow Friday evening, officials said.

“The hole has gotten deeper,” geotechnical engineer Larry Madrid said at a press conference Friday evening. “We can’t get into the building because of the potential for sudden collapse.”

The continued instability of the ground slowed engineers and kept evacuees in the Tampa-area neighborhood from returning to their homes.

“We’re really handicapped and paralyzed, and we really can’t do a whole lot more than wait,” Madrid said.

Structural engineer Bill Bracken said he was shocked the home was still standing.

“It should have collapsed by now,” Bracken said as he shook his head.

As hours passed, rescuers and family lost hope of seeing 36-year-old Jeff Bush pulled from the ground alive. “I know in my heart he’s dead,” his brother Jeremy told reporters Friday.

Michelle LaVaughn Obama is the first African-American first lady of the country, and a south-side Chicago native. Raised in a low-income neighborhood in a one-bedroom apartment with her parents and brother, Michelle and her brother Craig slept between a separated bed sheet in the living room as children. A gifted student, both kids were reading by the age of four.

Among other firsts, Michelle Obama was the first woman and black woman to appear on the cover of Better Homes & Gardens magazine and the premiere first lady as a presenter at the 2013 Oscars.FIRSTS!! -:>)

    — She was born Michelle LaVaugh Robinson in Chicago, IL in 1964; coincidentally, the same year of the civil rights act Robinson’s father was active in politics, serving as the Democratic precinct captain of the area. – – — –Jewish Democrats Launch Campaign To Defend Obama At AIPAC Conference—-

    – – –The National Jewish Democratic Council is launching a campaign in support of President Obama on Friday in advance of the AIPAC conference this weekend.

The effort is an answer to a similar, though much larger campaign run by the neo-conservative Emergency Committee for Israel around last year’s AIPAC conference that criticized Obama’s record on Israel. And it comes after weeks of fighting over the president’s nomination of Chuck Hagel to Secretary of Defense, the aftermath of which is sure to be a major undercurrent of the conference this year.

“We will continue to fight against the mud slinging by anti-Obama partisan operatives and elected officials who are looking to score cheap political points,” said Aaron Keyak, executive director of the NJDC.

“In a time when Washington, DC is becoming increasingly polarized along party lines, AIPAC Policy Conference is a place to appreciate the deep, bipartisan support for the U.S.-Israel relationship,” Keyak said.

The NJDC’s buttons will read: “Proud Pro-Israel Dem.”

An investigation began Tuesday when a man crashed McMillian’s SUV into another car on U.S. Highway 49 near the Coahoma and Tallahatchie county lines. The candidate wasn’t in the car.

McMillian’s body was found near the Mississippi River levee Wednesday morning between Sherard and Rena Lara, Coahoma County Coroner Scotty Meredith has said.

The body was sent for an autopsy, and the cause of death hasn’t been made public.

The sheriff’s department has not released a possible motive for the crime.

I’m surprised that AZ wasn’t on that “Miserable” list although I have to say we do have some of the best hospitals for old geezers who can afford it plus all that golf & jaw action keeps these buzzards thin & moving. The hot dry climate is probably better than embalming fluid!

I was happy but not surprised to see Colorado as #2 on the Best places to live. Maybe I need to listen to my girls & move back there now. Except for the winters, I really loved it there.

    *blink*………..Al Queda has a magazine??

Al Qaeda Hits Obama for Supporting Marriage Equality

Al Qaeda says the United States has another crime to add to its litany of atrocities: support for same-sex marriage.

In the latest issue of Inspire, the Al Qaeda-produced English-language magazine that teaches readers how to cause traffic accidents, torch parked cars, and “make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom,” the terrorist group goes after President Barack Obama for “evolving” on marriage equality. In an infographic titled “The Nation Standing on ‘No Values,” the magazine also goes after “gay congressman” Barney Frank, who is no longer a congressman. It also cites statistics showing American Catholics are less likely to attend Mass and are increasingly supportive of same-sex marriage.

Speaking of burqas, here’s an interesting article…

The beauty obsession feeding Iran’s voracious cosmetic surgery industry

[….] Far from focusing on internal spiritual values, young people – some aged 14 – are having cosmetic surgery in the hope of attaining “doll faces” to make them look like the actors they see in Hollywood films and satellite television programmes from the west.

Iran has the highest rate of nose surgery in the world. According to a report in the conservative Etemad newspaper, as many as 200,000 Iranians, mostly women, go to cosmetic surgeons each year to reduce the size of their nose and make the tip point upwards.

For many, surgery is a reaction to the restrictive rules of compulsory hijab. “They won’t let us display our beauty,” one woman said. “It’s human nature to want to seek out attention with a beautiful figure, hair, skin … but hijab doesn’t let you do that. So we have to satisfy that instinct by displaying our ‘art’ on our faces.” Others see it simply as taking advantage of the benefits of modernity.[….]

Sorry ya’ll Sandra Fluke can miss me with her half ass responds in regards to the attack on Miss Wallis. Seriously talking about “I thought my response was obvious.” I said it a year ago and I will say it again: White feminist had not a damn thing to say when Limbaugh attacked the first lady and the Obama girls. However, when it came to attacking a white woman they went all in. I’m not saying that they were wrong for going after Limbaugh. I am saying they were hell of late to the party.

Now it has been close to a week since Miss Wallis was attacked. Yet I see white feminist staying mighty quiet. Yea mighty quiet considering when it came to Fluke they were loud as hell. I also see that many of them are trying to deny that the tweet was racist. I see many of them defending the onion even going so far as to say the tweet was not sexist. Now these folks behave high and mighty always thinking they are smarter than everyone else. Well if they are so damn enlighten why the hell do black folks have to explain to them that the onion tweet was not only sexist but racist as well? I’m gonna need for black folks to stop trying to explain racism to these fools.

All we have is us. Those white hipsters seriously thought we were going to sit back and let them degrade that beautiful little girl. They think we are playing with them when it comes to our children.

    • GOVCHRIS1988

Its been the same thing since the Suffragettes of the early 20th Century. Learn about my Georgia Senator for a day Rebecca Felton. Women’s suffrage and rights stopped when the women were of a different hue. Same thing today. Its why I call it WHITE feminism. Doesn’t include any woman of color and it never has.

    By mistermix March 2nd, 2013

I had an interesting conversation with an insurance rep while I was on vacation. She and her husband both sold health insurance to mid-size corporations for one of the big insurance companies, and they were on an award trip because they had been so successful. I asked her what she thought of Obamacare, and she said she had taken special training to become expert in healthcare reform, but not because she expected to sell a lot of insurance. Instead, her reasoning was that she wanted to be positioned for the day that private insurers like her company stopped providing policies on the exchanges.

Her view was that the regulations accompanying Obamacare made it impossible for insurers to make a profit. (One example among many is mental health care – mandated coverage under Obamacare is far more generous than the average current insurance policy.) So, she expected that private insurers would pull out and be replaced by government-sponsored healthcare. At that point, she’d be positioned to sell the Medigap-style policies that would inevitably accompany Medicare for all.

She pointed out that her company was one of the leading sellers of insurance in Japan, which has government-sponsored healthcare. Most Japanese buy a policy to buy coverage the government doesn’t provide. She thought there would be the same kind of bonanza here, as soon as we shift to a more Japanese-style system. She didn’t understand why other agents in her company were shying away from learning about Obamacare, while she embraced it as a big opportunity.

Oxfam Urges Food Consumers to Peek Behind the Brands

[….] Oxfam’s GROW campaign kicked off a new initiative this week, Behind the Brands, to rank the policies of big food companies on important issues like treatment of workers and farmers, equality for women, land, clean water, climate change, and transparency. Oxfam has spent over a year pulling information together through research and engagement with food companies, so that for the first time, people will be able to see what the goes on behind products like M&Ms and Oreos. The main report contains a Scorecard that ranks the top 10 food companies, based on nearly 3000 data points that touch on issues rarely considered in mainstream sustainability ratings.

Oxfam plans to push hard for improvements in coming years, with campaigns planned in more than 12 countries, including the US, Mexico, Brazil, China and countries across Europe, which are major markets for these companies.[….]

U.S. film and music industries roll out new anti-piracy program

A new “copyright alert” system has begun rolling out this week in the United States in an effort to curb online piracy.[….] The program will use warnings and could result in slowed or suspended Internet connections, but users will not lose Web access entirely. Still, some civil liberties groups and Internet activists call it too invasive and warn it could unfairly penalize some users.

It is being coordinated by the Center for Copyright Information, created by the music and cinema industries and the five largest broadband Internet firms.[….] Participating in the program are the five largest broadband Internet providers – Comcast, Time Warner Cable, AT&T, Cablevision and Verizon — covering some 85 per cent of US residential customers.[….]

Gregory Jackson Sr. calls 911 nine times for cheeseburger (VIDEO)

Gregory Jackson Sr., 52, dialed 911 not once, not twice, but nine times in 90 minutes trying to order a cheeseburger. According to transcripts of the calls, the irritated dispatcher initially hung up on Jackson.

Dispatcher: “OK, so why did you call 911 for, what do you need?”
Dispatcher: “Do you have an emergency?”
    Jackson: “A cheeseburger.”
    Dispatcher: “Have a good day.”

After eight more calls, the dispatcher told Jackson “we don’t take cheeseburger orders” and sent police to his home in New Castle, The Star Press reported. Turns out, Jackson has an extensive criminal record and was arrested on an outstanding warrant, according to WISH. He didn’t get his cheeseburger, but the sheriff told The Star Press that he may have gotten a peanut butter and jelly sandwich — in jail.

Ashley Judd in DC: I’m a Three-Time Rape Survivor

[….] Judd, who is considering a challenge to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) next fall as a Democrat, did not take questions from the press—although she did allude to reporters briefly as the “people here who don’t give a rat’s you-know-what about violence”—spoke for more than a hour on Friday at George Washington University on virtually anything but electoral politics. (Topics ranged from child prostitution, to female empowerment, to reproductive health care, to corruption in the Democratic Republic of Congo, to her Kentucky roots.)

But her most candid remarks may have come when she was asked if she had any advice for women who have been sexually assaulted:

I’ve been aware of gender violence all my life, being a survivor of gender violence. Yet I was astonished when I went to graduate school and started to do a deeper dive on gender violence here in America how prevalent rape and attempted rape is, particularly amongst young people. Am I correct that it’s one in three college* students, college women? So that’s a lot. That’s a third of us in this room. And I think part of what’s important, in addition to how we shape the narrative, is that we all have the courage to talk about it, because we’re as sick as our secrets and the shame keeps us in isolation. And when we find that shared experience, we gather our strength and our hope. So for example, I’m a three-time survivor of rape, and about that I have no shame, because it was never my shame to begin with—it was the perpetrator’s shame.[….]

Nurse refused to give CPR to elderly woman who later died [updated]

Bakersfield fire dispatcher Tracey Halvorson pleaded with the woman on the other end of the line, begging her to start CPR on an elderly woman who was barely breathing.

“It’s a human being,” Halvorson said, speaking quickly. “Is there anybody that’s willing to help this lady and not let her die?”

    The woman paused.

    “Um, not at this time.”

On a 911 tape released by the Bakersfield Fire Department, the woman on the other end of the line told Halvorson that she was a nurse at Glenwood Gardens, a senior living facility in Bakersfield. But on Tuesday, the nurse refused to give the woman CPR, saying it was against the facility’s policy for staff to do so, according to the tape.

Reporting rape at the University of North Carolina (UNC) is “discouraged” especially if it happens “too often.”

    — – Melinda Manning, who is the former Assistant Dean of Students at UNC, filed a complaint alleging the University Counsel’s office complained that the number of sexual assault cases she compiled for 2010 was “too high.”

Three students and 1 former student joined in the complaint which reveals the sort of conduct that the GOP thrives on.
    – —-According to the Daily Tar Heel, Manning was made a victim of a hostile work environment in the dean of students office and higher administrators were less than receptive toward her effort to change the way the University handles sexual assault cases. In particular, the complaint points to Dean of Students Jonathan Sauls, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Winston Crisp and the Office of University Counsel.
    – – — SNIP – – —
When Sauls was hired in 2006, ”all language requiring sexual assault training for judicial boards disappeared.”

BWhen Manning applied for the then vacant position, dean of student affairs, Crisp told her that he would ‘never hire her because she had a young child at home’ and what that could mean,”
In other words, the good ole boys don’t want no women shining a bright light on the systematic effort to silence rape victims, especially when that woman should be at home looking after her young child instead of causing trouble.
Hm — so, basically, this guy Crisp just admitted to discrimination in hiring in the workplace.

Bill Maher is at it again. Why is Snoop Dog sitting there looking like Bill’s lapdog?

Bill Maher’s Surprising Take: ‘Maybe The Voting Rights Act Is Not Helping Minorities’
Bill Maher tonight took a surprising stand against the Voting Rights Act. He argued that rather than helping minorities, the Voting Rights Act might actually be hurting the country if it continues redistricting that, as a side effect, allows “crazy right-winger Republicans” to get elected to Congress. Maher was challenged by panelist Gavin Newsom, who argued that there is still a lot of racial resentment and antipathy in the United States, and minority groups still need the protections provided by the Voting Rights Act.

This is especially the case with regard to the WHPC! If you listen carefully about the questions they ask the Press Secretary or, like yesterday, the questions they asked the President himself, they (the media) are always framing their questions to satisfy many Republican assumptions and beliefs.

Bizarrely, Greig made the comments while criticizing similar remarks from Todd Akin, who falsely claimed that “legitimate rape” rarely causes pregnancy since the female body “has ways of shutting that whole thing down.”

It just blows my mind when women say stupid stuff like that.

      • AxelFoley

Not when they’re GOP. GOP minorities and women will say what the party wants them to say to stay in their good graces.

“GOP minorities and women will say what the party wants them to say to stay in their good graces.”

You speak TRUTH, AxelFoley! For example, how can Justice Clarence Thomas sit there quietly when Antonin Scalia is mouthing off KKK mantra about “voting being a Racial entitlement?” Justice Thomas is able to do that because he wants approval from right wingers, many of whom are blatantly racists

I don’t care how conservative and GOP Clarence Thomas may be, the truth is that Thomas’s parents, grand parents, and great grandparents, etc.,could not vote simply because they were Black. Clarence Thomas knows that. He also knows very well that his party has been doing everything to suppress the votes of African Americans and Hispanics. So, for him to sit there and say nothing when Scalia is attacking a law that probably made it possible for Clarence to be appointed to the Court shows you the extent how despicable GOP Blacks, other people of color, and women, have to go to in order to win approval from the right wing white supremacists.

    – – –Family Care International Receives $1 Million MacArthur Grant to Improve Maternal Health Globally – – –

——– –Making pregnancy and childbirth safer
Every two minutes, somewhere in the world, a woman dies from preventable or treatable complications of pregnancy and childbirth. For every woman who dies, 20 more experience serious illness or disability. And every year, three million babies do not survive their first month of life.

When Family Care International was founded 25 years ago, the world was paying little attention to the hundreds of thousands of women who were dying each year. The first international organization dedicated to reducing maternal death, Family Care International helped put the issue of maternal health on the map. Now maternal mortality has been cut in half, but much work remains to be done.

Headquartered in New York City with locally-staffed offices in three countries in Africa and two in Latin America, Family Care International works in close partnership with governments, civil society organizations, donors, communities, grassroots advocates, and women’s groups. Pairing efforts to strengthen the capacity of local organizations, advocates, and governments with a powerful advocacy voice on the global stage, the organization works to ensure that all women have access to the maternal and reproductive health care they need. Doing so saves the lives and protects the health of women and improves the well-being and prosperity of their children, families, and communities.
