Saturday Open Thread-Influential Black Educators

It’s the weekend! I hope everyone had a wonderful week. This week’s open thread has highlighted black educators who have changed the system for the better.

Marva Collins (born August 31, 1936) is an American educator who in 1975 started Westside Preparatory School in Garfield Park, an impoverished neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. She ran the school for more than 30 years until it closed in 2008 due to lack of sufficient enrollment and funding. She is famous for applying classical education successfully with impoverished students, many of whom had been wrongly labeled as learning disabled by public schools. She once wrote, “I have discovered few learning disabled students in my three decades of teaching. I have, however, discovered many, many victims of teaching inabilities.” She has written a number of manuals, books and motivational tracts describing her history and methods, and currently (2006) has a website and public speaking service. She was most widely publicized in the 1981 biographical TV movie The Marva Collins Story starring Cicely Tyson and Morgan Freeman.

Collins was born in Monroeville, Alabama. She graduated from Clark College (now known as Clark Atlanta University) in Atlanta, Georgia.

She taught school for two years in Alabama, then moved to Chicago, where she taught in public schools for fourteen years. In 1975 she started Westside Preparatory School, which became an educational and commercial success. In 1996 she began supervising three Chicago public schools that had been placed on probation. In 2004 she received a National Humanities Medal, among many awards for her teaching and efforts at school reform.

Marva Collins uses the Socratic method, modified for use in primary school. The first step is to select material with abstract content to challenge students’ logic, and that will therefore have different meaning to different students, in order to aid discussion. This is done specifically to teach children to reason.

Next, the teacher should read the material, because unknown material cannot be taught. New words, the words to watch, should be listed, and taught, for pronunciation, use and spelling before the material is read. Without this step, the reading is meaningless.

Next, one begins a series of pertinent questions as the reading progresses, starting with a reference to the title, and a question about what the material is about. Predictions should use logic, reasoning and evidence without fallacy. The reading must be out loud, so the teacher can ask questions at pertinent points. Students are taught to test their reasoning. Afterward, they write daily letters to the author or characters, and write a critical review. Why is the work important to them? The child must be taught to refer to what was previously learned to support their opinions.

In the Socratic method, the rate of information is controlled by the teacher. Properly paced, this encourages participation, reducing discipline issues and encouraging self-discipline. The program specifically avoids work-sheets and inane busy work. It establishes an intellectual atmosphere, a general attitude suspending judgment, and examining reasoning.

Marva Collins created her low cost private school specifically for the purpose of teaching low income African American children whom the Chicago public school system had labeled as being “learning disabled.”

One article about Marva Collins’ school stated, “Working with students having the worst of backgrounds, those who were working far below grade level, and even those who had been labeled as ‘unteachable,’ Marva was able to overcome the obstacles. News of third grade students reading at ninth grade level, four-year-olds learning to read in only a few months, outstanding test scores, disappearance of behavioral problems, second-graders studying Shakespeare, and other incredible reports, astounded the public.”

During the 2006-2007 school year, Collins’ school charged $5,500 for tuition, and parents said the school did a much better job than the Chicago public school system. Meanwhile, during the 2007-2008 year, Chicago public school officials claimed that their budget of $11,300 per student was not enough.

But, he told Las Vegas Sun political reporter Jon Ralston, after that he plans to keep his massive political spending secret.

    – –So, thanks to the Supreme Court’s stream of rulings against political spending limits and the unwillingness of the Republicans in Congress and on the Federal Election Commission to even mandate disclosure of independent political ad funders, billionaires like Adelson can simply hide their massive donations through (c)(4)s when they get tired of the media and public scrutiny. And rather than letting the voters decide how much credibility to give an ad bankrolled entirely by an anti-union gambling magnate — he can just choose to keep them in the dark.

    – – —Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney campaigned with Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R), who presides over one of the least job-creating states in America, today at Otterbein College — a school that benefited from the passage of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, commonly known as the stimulus.

Otterbein received a grant worth more than $80,000 for a federal work-study program in July 2009. Ignoring that fact, though, Romney proceeded to attack the stimulus in his speech to students:

ROMNEY: Then there was the stimulus itself. $787 billion of borrowing. It could have been entirely focused on getting getting the private sector to buy capital equipment, for instance. That puts people to work. Or to hire people. Instead, it primary protected people in the governmental sector, which is probably the sector that should have been shrinking.

    Watch it:

    – – –Karl Rove’s Electoral Map Shows Obama With A Solid Lead Over Romney – —

    – – – – –Karl Rove‘s out with the first installment of his 2012 electoral map. And as of now, he’s not painting a pretty picture for Mitt Romney.

    First off, here’s the map:

As seen in the map, votes solidly for President Obama or “leaning Obama” add up to 284 — versus Romney’s total of 172. That leaves 82 as a toss-up. As it stands, it obviously shows Romney lagging behind significantly. As Brett LoGiurato points out over at Business Insider (emphasis his): “According to this map, even if Romney wins all the toss-up states of Iowa, Missouri, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida — which could be done — he still wouldn’t beat Obama.”

South Carolina’s a toss up, seriously? Nonetheless, it’s worth noting that Rove’s predictions have been pretty accurate in the past. As Dave Weigel (and others) observes, “In 2008, his week-to-week update of the electoral college map was spot-on, and correctly calculated the margin John McCain would lose by.”

Screw this “not my intention” bogus excuse. We Buddhists say ALL that matters IS intention. You may muck things up following through, but if the attention is pure, you are good. Examine your motivation, something those on the Rabid Left never seem to do, BTW (a lot of talk about DKOS on TOD the other day. Brought back memories of their, to use the term associated with Romney, mendacity.

    • Here’s an excerpt of GLAAD’s response to Crowley’s “apology”:

The apology Crowley gave stands by her contention that she was asking a legitimate question about Fluke’s marital intentions and she believes it relieves her of responsibility for the homophobic sentiment her comments expressed. As the Washington Post asserted, “’Not my intention’ isn’t relevant language for an apology.”But Crowley’s first defense of the tweet was that she was “exposing the Left’s total lack of a sense of humor.” Which implies that there is supposed to be something funny somewhere in those three words and their accompanied punctuation. “To a man?” Now, unless she was joking that Crowley might be “engaged in combat” or some other non-marital meaning of the word (which is not terribly intuitive, nor does Crowley strike me as much of a Star Trek: The Next Generation fan) what Crowley clearly thinks is funny is the idea that Fluke would be engaged, to be married, to someone other than a man. And unless Monica Crowley does not believe in the gender binary, there is only one other logical option. Therefore Crowley’s “joke” was pretending she was surprised Fluke wasn’t gay.

Let’s remember that Monica Crowley also compared President Obama to deposed Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak when he said he believed DOMA was unconstitional.

This apology not only belies Crowley’s history – and her own comments about what she intended by her tweet – but this apology was also not an apology. As the Washington Post asserted, “’Not my intention’ isn’t relevant language for an apology.”

No call for Crowley to be fired.

No call for Crowley to meet with GLAAD and/or other LGBT groups.

      Double Standards.

Mitt Romney’s campaign tried to get out front of the news today by issuing press releases suggesting that the president hasn’t done enough for the nation’s veterans. Campaign spokesperson Andrea Saul said:

  • BuzzFeed got caught lying about PBO’s position on killing OBL, but instead of taking the L and moving on, they publish this bs:

The criticism leaves out the broader point Romney was making, that America’s focus should have been stopping the broader efforts of Islamic terrorists.

The Romney campaign responded that the former Massachusetts Governor “believes it’s important that we continue to hunt down and capture or kill bin Laden,” but reiterated the campaign’s message about the broader war on terror.

“If other candidates believe that only one person should be our sole focus, instead of recognizing the larger threat of regional and global terrorist networks built by Al Qaeda and others and destroying them, then I think it has much less to do with naiveté and instead is merely a disagreement,” said then Romney spokesman Kevin Madden. “We would disagree with a candidate who thinks our military and [intelligence] efforts in the war on terror should only focus on one terrorist leader.”

Karl Rove Is a Slithering, Leprous Amphibian from Hell
    By Charles P. Pierce
    at 5:04PM

In the last campaign, Karl Rove decided that the way to beat Barack Obama was to turn him into some combination of Sportin’ Life and Billy Strayhorn. (That attempting to both black-bait and gay-bait the opposition was something that should gag the average maggot never has meant much to Rove, as he has spent a career making ill higher forms of life than himself.) Of Obama, Rove opined, “…even if you never met him, you know this guy. He’s the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by.”

Well, that worked so well that Rove has decided to work the same noxious theme this time around, too:

You know, Barack Obama is a “celebrity” who really isn’t interested in the hard work of governing — as was, apparently, the guy Rove put in the Oval Office. I don’t know how this ad is supposed to work. The people who think the president is a show-pony didn’t vote for him last time and won’t vote for him this time, and wouldn’t vote for him if he turned water into wine on national TV. The people who think Obama’s turn on Jimmy Fallon, and his Al Green karaoke, are marks of fundamental cool are unlikely to turn against him because of that. Young people are going to look at this ad and wonder why the old boring white guys are trying to harsh the national mellow. My answer is a long-game answer. At some level, Rove, and the plutocrats for whom he works, know that it’s better than 50-50 that the president will be re-elected. The goal in the campaign, therefore, will be to muddy him sufficiently that the already limited time a second-term president has when anybody’s paying attention to him will be relatively worthless. That, and some thinly disguised stroking of the base’s racist g-spots and you’ve got a two-fer that would appeal to a guy who’s only ever been interested in politics to work out whatever personal issues the tiny little man inside him has with the rest of the world.

Here’s a share of Jackiegrumbacher posted at TOD today….

“Well today I joined the Harrisburg, PA segment of the national ‘ war on women march’ and it was great, even though the weather was cold and blustery. Every speech, every sign was about VOTING to get Republicans out of the state house and the Congress. Everybody was on point with that one central message and there were tons of Obama buttons. A state democratic senator excoriated Romney for telling a young woman that the poor could just shop around for health care once Republicans succeed in defunding Planned Parenthood. The anti-Romney boos were deafening as they were anytime Boehner’s name was mentioned. Gov Corbett is not going to live down his ‘Close Your Eyes’ statement any time soon and it’s going to haunt him into 2014, I’m happy to say. One of the speakers said that women actually make up 54 percent of the potential electorate and if they all come out and vote in a united effort, they can’t be stopped. I like the fact that people weren’t just expressing rage and anger, they were focusing on what needs to happen in November and when asked if they were fired up, the response was a huge YES. Women are royally outraged by the demeaning, ugly, intrusion legislation that’s being passed in this country and as the list of laws was read off from state to state, it all looked like a deliberate onslaught against our rights as full human beings. The 31 male R’s who voted no to the Violence Against Women Act were booed and I hope that act of cowardice lives to haunt them all their days. Our job is to harness this energy–make sure everyone is registered, make sure they focus on the enemy and make sure they get out to vote. As someone said today, we saw what happened in 2010, so NO EXCUSES for not voting in 2012.”

Wanted to share this for the Tweeters here. Apparently there is someone with the tag Snarkknoller making up answers to reporters fake questions, smacking the WH press corps. The Tweets are very funny. You can check it out at The Obama Diary.

    It Took Guts, Stupid

Maybe it’s because I’m a liberal; maybe it is because so much time has passed since the 9/11 attacks and I’ve calmed down, but I feel quite a bit uncomfortable spending too much time celebrating the death of Usama bin-Laden. I’m glad we found him. I’m glad we killed him. But I don’t want to dance in the end zone. I also don’t want to give the impression that I think the president’s greatest accomplishment is that he had someone killed.

Nonetheless, this garbage needs to be answered. The idiots who still work over at Breitbart’s operation are questioning whether the president deserves any credit for authorizing the mission that got bin-Laden, and their conclusion is that he not only deserves no credit but that he was looking to cover his ass if anything went wrong. Their evidence is the note that then CIA director Leon Panetta released to Time magazine:

Received phone call from Tom Donilon who stated that the President made a decision with regard to AC1 [Abbottabad Compound 1]. The decision is to proceed with the assault.

The timing, operational decision making and control are in Admiral McRaven’s hands. The approval is provided on the risk profile presented to the President. Any additional risks are to be brought back to the President for his consideration. The direction is to go in and get bin Laden and if he is not there, to get out. Those instructions were conveyed to Admiral McRaven at approximately 10:45 am

On at least one critically important point, the president exercised operational control. After ignoring the advice of his defense secretary, vice president, and others, he ruled out a bombing mission and he ruled out doing nothing. He then ordered Admiral McRaven to do draw up a plan for a helicopter raid. When he reviewed that plan, he wasn’t satisfied with it. Here’s, a source the wingnuts might respect:

About 10 days before the raid, Obama was briefed on the plan. It included keeping two backup helicopters just outside Pakistani airspace in case something went wrong. But Obama felt that was risky. If the SEALs needed help, they couldn’t afford to wait for backup.

He said the operation needed a plan in case the SEALs had to fight their way out. So two Chinooks were sent into Pakistani airspace, loaded with backup teams, just in case. One of those Chinooks landed in the compound after the Black Hawk became inoperable. The raiders scrambled aboard the remaining Black Hawk and a Chinook, bin Laden’s body with them, and flew to the USS Carl Vinson in the North Arabian Sea. The ground operation had taken about 40 minutes.

Not only did the president insert the Chinooks into the operational plan, but that decision proved critical to the success of the mission. Unless you expect the president to serve as the operational commander of our Special Forces, something he isn’t trained to do, then I don’t know what more you can demand from him.

He made a decision to intrude on Pakistan’s sovereignty and to have commandos raid an armed compound in the middle of a city (Pakistan’s version of West Point, no less) in the middle of the night. There was a chance that bin-Laden wasn’t there. There was a chance that they’d kill innocent people. There was a chance that the commandos would be killed or captured. An international incident was assured regardless of the outcome of the raid. And Obama didn’t have the cover of unanimity among his advisers. His defense secretary, a Republican, was against it.

He considered all that, and then he ordered the mission anyway. And it went according to plan. And the one thing that went wrong (the helicopter crash) was only put right because of Obama’s intervention in the operational plan.

I ask you, in all honesty, what more could you possibly ask from a commander in chief than that he avenge the death of 3,000 innocent American victims by ordering a cross-border raid on uncertain intelligence, causing a row with one of our most uneasy allies, while making the operational tweak that led to success, and that it all turn out perfectly?

Karl Rove steps all over Mitt Romney’s big “bang”
    Friday, April 27, 2012 | Posted by Deaniac83 at 2:36 PM

Matt Rhodes, Mitt Romney’s campaign manager (you gotta feel sorry for the poor sap), wrote in a memo today that the Romney campaign is starting the general election with a “bang.” Sure, he threw out a bunch of inside-the-bubble words to make his memo sound all important and stuff, but really, his message was that Romney is starting in a big way. Well, it seems that while Rhodes’ memo was still in nascent form, Rove was already stepping all over it. Here’s Mitt Romney’s big “bang” according to Karl Rove:

Even if you take NBC’s much-better-for Romney swing state map, here is Mitt Romney’s… uhh… ‘bang,’

All of these “toss up” states were won by President Obama last time around, and Mitt Romney is in deep trouble in almost all of them. Let’s go through them quickly.

Florida: Romney didn’t do himself any favors among Latinos in Florida by promising a veto against the DREAM Act, and by demanding that immigrants go home. They don’t like Mitt.

Ohio: They make cars and car parts in Ohio. I doubt very much they will vote for the guy who demanded that the US auto industry be allowed to tank.

Pennsylvania: Swing state my rear end. Even though it is always tagged as a swing state, the last Republican to win PA in a presidential election was George H. W. Bush, in 1988.

North Carolina: A true swing state. But in all honesty, if Romney can’t win NC, he might as well start writing his concession speech now.

Nevada: It could go red, but then again, it re-elected a Democratic senator in 2010, when a blood red wave was sweeping the country.

Colorado: This is a state where young voters will be crucial. Let’s put it this way: if the youth turns out to vote in Colorado, Mitt Romney can kiss the state goodbye. And anyone who’s thinking that the President has lost his mojo with young voters since 2008 needs to simply check out the president’s appearances on college campuses pushing for Congress to keep student loan rates low.

Not to mention that the Obama campaign is actually making a play for Arizona, and if they are successful in putting it into contention, Romney needs to start praying hard.

Seriously, if this is what the “swing” state map looks like, Mitt Romney is royally screwed. Maybe that’s why even Karl Rove thinks that President Obama will win re-election

Health Reform in Action: 15 Million Customers to Receive $1.3 Billion in Insurance Refunds

I am running out of ways to say Obamacare works. Here’s one way to say it: this year, 15 million people will receive checks from their health insurance companies totaling $1.3 billion. Here’s the breakdown from the Kaiser Family Foundation:

Based on the preliminary estimates from insurers, rebates would total $1.3 billion this year, including $426 million in the individual market, $377 million in the small group market, and $541 million in the large group market.

This comes from something called the Medical Loss Ratio requirement: the requirement in the Affordable Care Act that insurance companies must spend at least 80% of premiums in individual and small group markets – 85% in large group markets – to actually provide health care. If they don’t, they must issue refunds to their subscribers to make up for the extra amount they took in. That requirement went into effect in 2011, and the first checks are due to be issued by this August.

In the small group market, rebates will issue for nearly 5 million enrollees, and in the large group market, 7.5 million. In the individual market, this translates to an average rebate of $127 will go to 3.4 million people. – that is, nearly a third of the people in the individual market will get a check from their insurance company.

This is also not the only money consumers are saving. The Kaiser report notes that the MLR requirements also kept rates lower than they would otherwise be in the first place.

All this didn’t just happen on automatic pilot, I might note. Not only is the Affordable Care Act the most pro-consumer health care law since Medicare, its implementation by the Obama administration has been stellar. We noted the administration’s steadfast stand against insurance company tricks trying to get everything and its mother under “medical loss,” and we previewed this rule’s effectiveness just as it was going into effect.

This is a significant part of what health reform was about. The right wing likes to talk about “market-based” solutions for health reform; well, this is one of them. This is a reform where consumers have a right to demand that insurance companies spend our premium dollars on what it was intended for – to provide health care services – rather than to pay for hiring “analysts” whose only job is to figure out how to kick sick people off of their plans, how to avoid paying for proper treatment if it got ‘too expensive’, and how to sacrifice health care at the alter of profit. The President and the Democrats came up with the novel concept that insurance companies should actually spend money providing health care, and they got pummeled for it by the right wing whackjobs and insurance company lobbyists. But the president got it done.

    PBOMB – — – LET’S JUST DO – – —

    — –Let’s just say it: The Republicans are the problem.
Rep. Allen West, a Florida Republican, was recently captured on video asserting that there are “78 to 81” Democrats in Congress who are members of the Communist Party. Of course, it’s not unusual for some renegade lawmaker from either side of the aisle to say something outrageous. What made West’s comment — right out of the McCarthyite playbook of the 1950s — so striking was the almost complete lack of condemnation from Republican congressional leaders or other major party figures, including the remaining presidential candidates.

It’s not that the GOP leadership agrees with West; it is that such extreme remarks and views are now taken for granted.

    – – — THIS – – – ->We have been studying Washington politics and Congress for more than 40 years, and never have we seen them this dysfunctional. In our past writings, we have criticized both parties when we believed it was warranted. Today, however, we have no choice but to acknowledge that the core of the problem lies with the Republican Party.

The GOP has become an insurgent outlier in American politics. It is ideologically extreme; scornful of compromise; unmoved by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition.

When one party moves this far from the mainstream, it makes it nearly impossible for the political system to deal constructively with the country’s challenges.
