To ensure this momentum can be sustained, the President is pressing Congress to act to create jobs and expand opportunity from raising the minimum wage, to helping people pay back their student loans, to fair pay and paid leave. These are steps that would continue to make things better for the middle class, which has always been his priority. But Republicans in Congress have repeatedly blocked these important measures.

Five African American Women Will Be on Georgia’s Statewide Ballot For The First Time

This November, Georgia will make history, or herstory. For the first time in Georgia and the U.S., five African-American women will be on a statewide ballot. These candidates include Doreen Carter for secretary of state, Liz Johnson for insurance commissioner, Robbin Shipp for labor commissioner, Connie Stokes for lieutenant governor and Valarie Wilson for school superintendent.

“We did not want to miss the opportunity to get out and announce this to everyone in the state of Georgia and tell everyone how important this election will be,” Democratic state Rep. Dee Dawkins-Haigler told the Savannah Morning News.

As part of their campaign the candidates will tour the state on bus, making sure to hit the areas of Georgia with a high number of registered black female voters to solicit votes. Their first plan of attack is metro Atlanta area.

Nancy Pelosi Chases Republican Lawmaker Across House Chamber

During the conclusion of Marino’s comments on the border supplemental, he said “We don’t have law and order. My colleagues on the other side don’t want to do anything about it.”

“Under the leadership of their former leader, when in 2009 and 2010, they had the House, the Senate and the White House, and they knew this problem existed,” Marino continued. “They didn’t have the strength to go after it back then. But now are trying to make a political issue out of it.”

It was then that Pelosi challenged Marino’s claims, off-mic.

“Yes it is true,” Marino replied to Pelosi, who was House speaker at that time. “I did the research on it. You might want to try it. You might want to try it, Madam Leader. Do the research on it. Do the research. I did it. That’s one thing that you don’t do.”

Marino then urged lawmakers to support the border supplemental with the claim that he “apparently I hit the right nerve.”

Pelosi quickly crossed the chamber after Marino concluded his remarks, enraged him, then pointed and stuck her finger in Marino’s face.

    ABC reports:
She then followed Marino up a Republican aisle, and continued arguing with him. Another Republican mer spoke out to tell the chair that the House was not in order, in an effort to halt the bickering.

Pelosi finally relented as Republicans tried to get between Pelosi and Marino, and returned to the Democratic side of the chamber. The House then promptly voted to approve the $694 million border supplemental, 223-189.

*UPDATE: According to Pelosi spokeswoman Evangeline George, “Leader Pelosi just wanted to remind the Congressman that House Democrats had the courage to pass the DREAM Act – and have the courage to stand up for what the American people want: bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform.”
George added that “Pelosi accepted the Congressman’s apology.”

    Good morning POU.

So late last night, I posted a comment about seeing Get On Up.

So after that I went to both my FB page and twitter page and I posted posted about the movie there.

I have been wanting to rant ever since.

So first, one idiot was complaining about the opening scene having to be a Dave Chappelle skit. The scene depitcts when James Brown interrupted a business meeting adjacent to his offices in Augusta cause someone dropped a deuce in his private bathroom. When someone told him that it was IN FACT a true happening, they proceeded to give a mea culpa, but then went on to shade the film because it was directed by dude who did The Help.

Look, I get that people hated The Help. I’ve never seen it and never wanted to see it. So someone decided that they won’t see it because of that. So okay fine. But I told em, I’ve never seen The Help, but I saw this movie and it was actually really good to me and the majority Black audience seemed to enjoy. (anyone ever notice these people like to make it seem like the people who see stuff like this are being dupes. It really a little condescending.?)

Ok, so then they were like “well this must be a white washing? I mean how can they tell James Brown’s story with a PG-13 rating?”

So I’m like, what? The Johnny Cash biopic was PG13 did anyone find that story lacking? Also Ray, Lincoln, and Malcolm X were PG-13. Did anyone find then lacking in “reality”? So then they say, “oh, but, well the trailer makes it seem like a tv movie” I’m like “well it was good”. If you want to see it, then see, but don’t rely on people’s opinions who haven’t even seen the film and are probably only going on rumour or “I had heard” bullshit.

Then they had the nerve to say “oh well, I wasn’t planning on seeing it anyway” but “I hope it does well”. WTF! The same people who want more films with Black stars and Black stories, complain and complain, but when you do get at least a good film that doesn’t have us a slaves, servants, etc, they still bitch.

No the movie wasn’t directed by Spike Lee, doesn’t mean it’s couldn’t still be a good film. Yes it was directed by dude from The Help, but even crappy directors when given a chance can make good work.

Ugh. Look, I don’t expect people to automatically like a film that I do. But there legitmate critics and then there is trolling. I hate trolling.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/JamilaJP JamilaJP

I’ve read about both the flaws and the good aspects of this film. I’m still a little skeptical of how much *I’ll* enjoy it, but I still look forward to seeing it soon. Matter of fact, “Get On Up” is one of only a few summer releases I’m interested in at all.

I thought Chadwick B.’s performance in “42” was…fine, but the film, while good, was kinda paint-by-numbers in terms of script and direction of the narrative, IMO. Do you think the same can be said about this JB movie, for those of you who have seen it?

      • lamh

I’ve been keeping up on that. The flaws I’ve read about is more so a reflection on qualms with the direction and layout of the screenplay. It’s obvious that the director/writers were trying to deviate from the usual biopic formula of following a chronological story. The film is not chronological. It does jump from past to more current and back. I can see how that aspect of it can be cause for complaints.

Now the flaws about them “whitewashing” the less savory aspects of JB character, I’m not sure if there is a way to ever appease anyone who has those problems. No they didn’t show everytime he beat a woman. No they didn’t have full scale scenes of his prison terms. But like I said, they didn’t shy away from it either.

They chose to focus on the music and the persona and weaved in the backstory too. I don’t fault them for that.

      • lamh

As to “42”, I’ll admit, I never saw it. I know that people thought of it as a breakout performance for Chadwick Boseman.

But what I can say in the case of “Get On Up” I can definitely say that Chadwick’s performance as James Brown rivals Jamie Foxx’s performance as Ray Charles. The only difference is that Chadwick didn’t sing JB songs, cause really no one does it better than Jame Brown himself (although, I heard Chad sing a snippet of Man’s World in an interview and he sounded damn good)

I’m just telling people to see it for yourself. Don’t rely on reviews.

      • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

I gotta agree with you about ’42. I was struck by how many parts of the film that were frightfully corny imo.

        • http://twitter.com/#!/JamilaJP JamilaJP

Have you all ever seen “The Jackie Robinson Story,” starring Jackie Robinson himself?

          • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

Yes. It was a low budget film but they made some strong points in it. You hoped for a better day but there was a lot of darkness in that film.

    • EpiphanySweet

Can the church get an Amen on your entire post!! I enjoyed this move. I will support black movies that don’t depict us as slaves and servants. James Brown was a boss and I loved it!

  • lamh

Oh and BTW, they didn’t shy away from the ugly that Brown did.

They had a scene where they show JB abusing Jill Scott’s wife character. They didn’t show his fist hitting her face, but you did hear the hit and see the aftermath. No they didn’t have a string of scenes where JB beat his women but they didn’t “shy away from it” either.

They showed how much of a dictator he was to his band and how much of a dick he could be to Bobby Byrd. JB notoriously didn’t pay his band and fined them for petty things. And the way he treated Bobby Byrd, you wonder why BB even stayed.

They even alluded to his later drug use. No they didn’t recreate scenes from “Trainspotting” where you see the actual “needle in the arm” or “snort up a nose”, but they didn’t “shy” away from it.

It was a 2 hour movie. The movie these people wanted, would mean having to what, shorten the music contribution?

    • nellcote

I think having Jagger involved kept it focused on the music.

      • lamh

        It definitely did.

They digitally remastered JB’s LIVE performances and had the Chad and Nelsan lip sync over it.

The also released a never before heard LIVE recording of “It’s A Man’s World”.

The music was awesome. The OG behind me knew the words to damn near every song and sand it too…lol

        • EpiphanySweet

Totally agree Lamb. He had the moves down. And he was just as incoherent as James Brown was.

Gabrielle Douglas wins Olympic gold in women’s gymnastics. :>)

At age 16, Gabrielle Douglas captured the attention of the world by becoming the first African-American athlete to win the Olympic gold medal in the Artistic Gymnastics Women’s Individual All-Around final on this date, winning that award at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

She also won gold medals in both the individual and team all-around competitions at the Olympics. She was the first American gymnast to win gold medals in both the individual all-around and team competitions at the same Olympics as well as being the only American All-Around Champion to win multiple gold medals.

Douglas was born in 1995 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and began
training in gymnastics at the age of six. Her older sister, Arielle,
persuaded their mother to enroll her in gymnastics classes. At the age of eight, she won the Level 4 all-around gymnastics title at the 2004 Virginia State Championships.

She had received a number of honors. On Aug. 3, 2012, the Kellogg Company announced it would feature a photo of Douglas standing on the Olympic podium with her gold medal for a special edition of its Corn Flakes.

I also posted the following yesterday!

Ebola then spreads in the community through human-to-human transmission, with infection resulting from direct contact (through broken skin or mucous membranes) with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected people, and indirect contact with environments contaminated with such fluids. Burial ceremonies in which mourners have direct contact with the body of the deceased person can also play a role in the transmission of Ebola. Men who have recovered from the disease can still transmit the virus through their semen for up to 7 weeks after recovery from illness.
Health-care workers have frequently been infected while treating patients with suspected or confirmed EVD. This has occurred through close contact with patients when infection control precautions are not strictly practiced.

think of it like this, we aren’t brining Ebola into US. We are bringing two sick Americans home to their families to essentially die in the presence of their loved one. it’s NOT transmitted by airborne pathogens. you have a better chance of catching TB or the Flu while sharing a flight. those are airborne pathogens .

    – — Obama preps next border action

    — -President Obama is expected to take executive action to help [illegal immigrants] [REFUGEES] stay in the country while Congress is away on a five-week recess, pro-immigrant advocates said Saturday.

Obama and his allies believe his authority to act without legislative approval has been strengthened by congressional gridlock over comprehensive reform.

“I’ve heard not to expect anything until toward the end of August. They’ve been listening to suggestions by advocates over what could be done. The president has yet to make a decision about what steps he plans to take,”said Brent Wilkes, national executive director of the League of United Latin American Citizens.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if the president makes some kind of announcement before the end of August, prior to the Congress returning.” White House officials have met in recent weeks with a variety of advocacy groups and stakeholders to review proposals for executive action.

400,000 Ohio residents urged not to drink the water after dangerous toxins found

The mayor of Toledo, Ohio declared a state of emergency after water in in the Collin Parks water treatment plant revealed the presence of a dangerous toxin, The Toledo Blade reports.

At a news conference, officials with the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department said that the level of microcystin — a cyanotoxin produced by blue-green algae that can cause symptoms ranging from rash to liver failure — is currently at 2.5 parts-per-million, more than twice the allowable level.

Health officials suspect that the reason behind the high levels of microcystin are algal blooms in the lakes that provide water to the Collins Park facility, but need to perform tests to verify that the algal blooms in those lakes is responsible….
