Saturday Open Thread: It’s A Saturday, It’s A Saturday!

We hope you’re enjoying your weekend!

A Roller Skating Jam Named “Saturdays”” is the first single by American hip hop trio De La Soul from their second studio album De La Soul Is Dead. The track also includes vocal contributions from American rapper Q-Tip, American R&B singer Vinia Mojica and American entrepreneur Russell Simmons. The track’s composition is built around many samples.

The song was generally well-received by critics. The song peaked at number twenty-two on the UK Singles Chart and at numbers six and forty three on the United States Billboard Hot Dance Club Play and Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs charts respectively.

Conception and composition

The song’s lyrics were written by Paul “Prince Paul” Huston, Kelvin “Posdnuos” Mercer, David “Dave” Jude Jolicoeur, Vincent “Maseo” Mason and Jonathan “Q-Tip” Davis,[1] and produced by Prince Paul.[1] The title of the song derives from the roller skate fad of the 1970s, as well as a prominent sample of “Saturday in the Park” originally recorded by American rock band Chicago.[2]

Posdnuos and Dave of the group rap verses on the track, and other musical contributions are also made by American rapper Q-Tip, who raps the first verse of the track and vocalist Vinia Mojica, who sings between verses.[3] The intro of the song also features Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons – in non-musical capacity – as a DJ from fictional radio station “WRMS”. The song is considered another collaboration from the Native Tongues posse, as both De La Soul, Q-Tip and Mojica are members; however, it would become among the last of these collaborations to appear on a De La Soul album.

The themes of the song’s lyrics revolve around more simple themes, including roller skating and the joy of weekends, compared to darker themes explored throughout De La Soul Is Dead to try to debunk their “daisy-age” image caused by the themes of their previous album 3 Feet High and Rising.[4] Because of this, the track has been described as one of the more light-hearted tracks on the album.[4]

The song’s main beat is based around a sample of a riff from American soul group The Mighty Ryeders’ “Evil Vibrations” (1978);[5] because of this, the group’s frontman, Rodney Matthews, is given songwriting credit on the song. Aside from this the song also samples vocals and a horn riff from American disco singer Frankie Valli’s “Grease”;[6] vocals from American rock band Chicago’s “Saturday in the Park” (1972);[5] American funk band Young-Holt Unlimited’s “Light My Fire” (1969);[5] horns from “I Got My Mind Made Up” by American funk band Instant Funk;[7] a drum break rom American funk band Tower of Power’s “Ebony Jam” (1975),[5] and a vocal sample from American disco band Chic’s “Good Times” (1979);[7] all of these samples except the latter three are credited in the liner notes.

Good morning! That jam brings back so many memories of growing up in Arkansas in the late 70s, early 80s. In the sticks, our fave (and sometimes only) entertainment was Saturday morning cartoons and Soul Train, Atari and the one rollerskating rink in town. Just might trade in my gardening shoes for roller skates today.

    Extreme Liberal:
I guess in today’s world, it’s quite OK to call the President of the United States a murderer on national television, but it’s not OK for a part-time, unpaid blogger to send a couple of angry, over-the-top tweets to just his followers and whose Twitter account has no mention of The Raw Story in the profile. What a world.

Okay, so the back story to this is that this week on twitter, after witnessing several of these purity lunatics, including Glenn Greenwald, use extreme rhetoric to express their displeasure with US foreign policy, Extreme Liberal mused that they’re so protective of Al Qaeda’s rights that perhaps they’re flirting with treasonous territory. I don’t love those remarks, but one would think that if it’s okay to call PBO a murderer, his supporters cultists and Nazi propagandists, that a few intemperate remarks coming from the other direction would just be chalked up to the heat of the moment, right?

Greenwald and his minions apparently threw a tantrum and this resulted in Extreme Liberal stepping down from his perch as a small, unpaid, amateur blogger at AngryBlackLady/Raw Story.

This situation fucks me with, bigtime. I already pretty much loathe GG; it’s probably not right but this is how I feel about this person. It bothers me tremendously that this bullying, sanctimonious, Ron Paul-admiring, previous Bush-supporting, absolutist zealot can pierce the world of reality-based pragmatic progressive blogs (small in number as they are) and throw his weight around. I’m with Aleth: GG has earned disdain and a permanent place on ignore. His “both parties are the same” followers are just not worth engaging in an election year, and people need to be careful about feeding into their drama, as they want this attention, they want our spaces and blogs to be saturated with their bullshit. GG is a fucking clown, and the day in which we are not allowed to have that opinion in our own spaces is the day in which I stop bothering with blogs altogether.

    /rant off

Seriously, why do people take this asshole seriously? I will never understand that.

        • dannie22

I dont get that either. GIgi is a NOBODY!!! Def low hanging fruit

        • GN

Yeah, I respectfully disagree with that decision. I do understand the thought process underlying it, truly, in terms of never wanting to stoop to GG’s level but I hope that EL is reinstated. Who exactly was he hurting? And can’t stand to see a bully rejoice in battering someone down like that.

EL was stating his thoughts and feeling: he wondered why GG and others are so concerned with Al Qaeda, who have killed people all over the world–this is EL’s opinion to which he’s entitled; he expressed a frustration related to this issue. As far as I’m concerned, GG can go fly a kite, I don’t give a damn if he was “offended” or whatever considering that GG pulls no punches himself. I’m a bad influence, let me log out of here.

    • gc

Try my method. Pack your days with work, volunteer work, aging parents issues, son’s upcoming marriage and hobbies, socializing, getting sun on your face, playing with your cat, watching the Borgias, and for Brain Vacays – celebrity weeklies – then cast you thoughts to GG. You’ll be like “who the fuck is he, and why should I care??.” I bet this will also put you in the same mindspace as 99% of Americans. Or “Amercians.”

What is especially wonderful for me, here, is the regular postings of open threads, so the convo goes anywhere and everywhere. It is tougher on the other blogs, with one mahor article and related thread

I’m with Aleth: GG has earned disdain

Count me in with y’all! GG totally worked his ass off to be as repulsive and revolting as he is, let’s give him his due.

      • GN

He done pissed me off. EL is hurting no one, he’s not even blogging for a living; he posts pics of his grandbabies and amateur political thoughts; he does not have GG’s audience and shouldn’t even be on his radar. Can’t stand Glenn Greenwald, and stuff like this is why.

        • trose1

Sites like WSY(back in the day) Prag Obots etc are making a mark. Twitter is a game changer. It is impactful.
Jeremy Scahill went on national TV and called PBO a murderer. The pushback was immediate and PL, Greeenwald and his buddies could not stand it. They will do anything to silence their critics. Doesn’t matter how small or big the critic.
I am sure Greenwald and crew want to silence the People’s View for the article written about his past bs.
We must carry on as usual.

    • Honestly, this whole situation pisses me off.

Glenn Greenwald is a BULLY and my dad always told me that you never back down from a bully because when you do, they will never leave you alone. And we’re seeing that in this situation because even though ABL and Megan Carpentier (editor of Raw Story) apologized and EL was let go, Greenwald’s minions are still harassing them and demanding that ABL be fired from Raw Story.

In my opinion, Megan and ABL should’ve told GiGi, “Free speech motherfucker” and kept it moving.

      • crazycanuck

      • GN

I feel the exact same way. Not throwing shade at ABL or Megan at all for trying to do better than the hyperbole, but when it comes to GG, I definitely see a bully, and he really can help himself a thermos full of STFU with his so-called civility complaints when in fact he is one of the least civil people on the internets. This is why people can get after bwd and chipsticks for handwringing sometimes, and I get why, but I will always admire them for standing up to GG and co, and not giving a single solitary fuck while doing so. EL said that his remarks were a little intemperate and he acknowledged that. To me, that’s enough and sufficient; he needs to leave those people alone. If GG and his flying troll army wants agitate more against PBO supporters, he can come here and get his ass handed to him.

        • gc

Nor do I understand why people waste their energy fighting with the MOFOs on DKOS. They love red meat and “bringing it to them” is giving in. I don’t think people are honest about their motives. They return time and time again to DK because they are addicted to the drama. Please don’t tell me it is because you can change a mind in Hell. It’s just a damned blog. GOTV, register people, I know some soup kitchens that will need help this summer….

      • Miranda

Greenwald defended neo-nazi Matthew Hale, claiming free speech….and they allowed him to bully them like this over some tweets?

    • Pretty much. Everyone with a brain knew PBO was saying the unemployment problem is with the public sector because the private sector has been hiring like gangbusters. But to acknowledge that fact would mean the media would have to call out Republican governors, like their crush Gov. Christie, for cutting jobs and thus causing the unemployment rate to rise.

    Romney Rules

Weekly, Steve Benen tallies up the latest instances of Mitt’s Mendacity. At longer intervals, the Dish flags Romneys Big Lies, the core myths of his case against an imaginary Obama. I find the laser focus on lying a little narrow: the modes of Mitt’s deception are manifold. As a private equity chief, Romney was a master of playing a rigged game, or of himself rigging games in his firm’s favor; he has carried that skill to the political arena. He would have the election played by Romney Rules, compiled below.

    1. Context doesn’t matter. Anything you say I may use against you, e.g., by making it sound like you said the opposite.

    2. My record shall be judged by different standards from that of my opponent. For example, job losses in my first year in office don’t count; in his, they shall define his entire record.

    3. What I said 18, 10, 4, or 3 years ago doesn’t matter. Erase it from your mind. I’ve been as consistent as human beings (all three of me) can be.

    4. When confronted directly with past positions that seem to contradict current ones, I may so thoroughly bend the positions back against each other that none shall be able to penetrate my paradoxes.

    5. I may erase the memory of my record of past moderation by attacking my opponents for their imagined moderation.

    6. It’s not my responsibility to counter the lies, smears, paranoid delusions or bloodthirstiness of my supporters.

    7. I may myself endlessly repeat wild accusations about my opponent that have no basis in fact. Relatedly, I may draw an endless series of false contrasts (on healthcare, Detroit rescue, stimulus) between my policies and his.

    8. I may refrain from taking a stand on pending legislation that, if passed, will have a profound impact on Americans’ lives.

    9. I may promise enormous new tax cuts and call them “revenue neutral” without spelling out the correspondingly enormous tax loophole closures needed to offset those cuts — or the enormous spending cuts that even a “revenue neutral” deficit reduction plan would require.

    10. I may lie with impunity to the American people for months and years — and be rewarded with the presidency.

    Romney dodged the draft
First he didn’t “desire” to serve, but didn’t evade it. Then he “longed” to go. The truth: He got four deferments
    By Joan Walsh

Mitt Romney changed his story on poverty in St. Louis Thursday. Where in February, during the GOP primary, he said “I’m not concerned about the very poor,” today he called rising poverty rates “a moral failure” – and blamed it on President Obama. But Romney supports Paul Ryan’s budget, which would slash food stamps, Head Start, Medicaid, nutrition programs for pregnant women and their children, and his tax plan would raise taxes on the poor and working class while giving himself an extra $5 million or so. Mitt, you got it right the first time: You’re not concerned about the very poor.

But Romney’s shifting stories on his Vietnam status could have real political consequences, as an Associated Press expose revealing that he sought and got four deferments from military service during the Vietnam War gets more play. It’s not the deferments that will hurt – Dick Cheney got five. It’s the fact that over the years, Romney has lied about it.

AP politely says his story has “evolved,” but tracks the puzzling changes. Running for president in 2007, Romney told the Boston Globe, “I longed in many respects to actually be in Vietnam and be representing our country there, and in some ways it was frustrating not to feel like I was there as part of the troops that were fighting in Vietnam.”

But in 1994, running against Ted Kennedy for his Massachusetts Senate seat while in his “I’m not a typical Republican” phase, he admitted “it was not my desire to go off and serve in Vietnam.” Fair enough: His father, George Romney, turned against the war, and so did a lot of Republicans (even if party hawks would later try to hang the “loss” of Vietnam on the antiwar left and their Democratic enablers). Indeed, in 1970, at 23, Romney told the Globe, ”If it wasn’t a political blunder to move into Vietnam, I don’t know what is.”

But while telling the truth about his lack of “desire to go off and serve” in 1994, Romney lied again, telling the Boston Herald he didn’t “take any actions to remove myself from the pool of young men who were eligible for the draft.” That’s absolutely not true. He got his first deferment while at Stanford University, where in his prep-school prankster phase he counter-protested a Vietnam draft protest. That’s another lie, in a way: While posing as pro-draft and pro-war, he was evading the draft with an “activity in study” deferment. After his freshman year, he got deferment status as “a minister of religion or divinity student,” which he’d keep while working in France as a missionary for his Mormon church.

Yet the AP reveals that other young Mormons were denied that deferment. And since the church itself strongly supported the war, its leaders eventually limited such deferments, but Romney kept his.

After his religious deferment, he got another academic deferment to finish school. By the time he was draft eligible, troop numbers were declining, and his lottery number was never called.

(Sally Quinn is still whining. Why won’t the Obama’s come to my parties? )

Sally Quinn announces the end of power in Washington
    June 7, 2011
    Washington Post

“Think about it. The White House’s power comes from the money people give the president. He wouldn’t be there if it weren’t for his big donors. He had a Hollywood fundraiser last month  at George Clooney’s house where he raised $15 million. Those are the people who count. If the president thought that there was real power in Washington, that the Congress, the diplomatic corps or the journalists could help him in any way, then he and the first lady would surely go out more often.

The Obamas have been roundly criticized for not being part of the Washington social scene. The question is, does it matter? Could Obama win or lose the presidency because he has dissed the Washington community? I suspect the answer is no. It doesn’t matter anymore. …

Could it be that the Obamas, not knowing Washington, think that’s all there is to the social life here? Who wouldn’t want to stay away? On the other hand, he is the president of the United States and, whether he likes it or not, the leader of social as well as political Washington.

    – – – —Obama warns about teacher layoffs– –

    – —- In his weekly address, President Obama doubled down on his call for Congress to help cash-strapped states hire teachers, arguing education was a key ingredient to improving the struggling American economy.

“Teachers matter,” the president said Saturday. “One study found that a good teacher can increase the lifetime income of a classroom by over $250,000. A great teacher can change the course of a child’s life. So the last thing our country needs is to have fewer teachers in our schools.”

    – — –SNIP- —

“Some things are bigger than an election. Some things are bigger than politics. So I hope you’ll join me in telling Congress to do the right thing; to get to work and to help get our teachers back in the classroom,” Obama said. “We can’t afford to wait any longer.”

But Obama also made a point to individually note dramatic teacher lay offs in states like Pennsylvania that could be crucial in November.

    – – – –Job Killing For Dummies: Why the GOP is to Blame For the Lack of Jobs — –

    – – —It is not unusual during elections for candidates to cast aspersion on their rivals to portray them as unworthy of support, and Republicans have spent considerable time blaming President Obama for sluggish job growth. In fact, the GOP, and particularly Willard Romney, has assailed the President for not creating jobs they claim is only possible if the wealthy receive more tax cuts and the government goes on a deregulation frenzy. The GOP agenda has never changed in over thirty years, and despite the abject failure of their grand scheme to enrich “job creators” and their corporations, they persist in attempting to convince Americans that the policies that have failed time and time again are the only remedy to save the economy and spur full employment. Romney, in particular, assails the President for being “anti-business, anti-investment, and anti-job policies,” but as usual, Romney lies.

It is important to remember that on Inauguration Day, a group of Republican leaders gathered to map out their plan to obstruct every one of the President’s economic plans and they certainly followed through on their promises.

The New York Post today had an exclusive about a strained relationship between Newark Mayor Cory Booker and President Obama.

I got $20 that says on the political talk shows tomorrow there will be nonstop talk about the President’s remarks on the private sector and zilch on Romney’s diss of teachers, cops and firefighters and nothing about him stating that employers should tell their employees how to vote.

    Any takers?

  • ‘If they had hung Joe Biden, we would not be here’
    Brandon Ortiz | Lexington Herald-Leader

A Kentucky grand jury refused Tuesday to indict two men who hung an effigy of Barack Obama from a tree last fall on the University of Kentucky campus, their lawyer said.

The grand jury dismissed charges of second-degree burglary, theft by unlawful taking and disorderly conduct against Hunter Bush, 21, and Joe Fischer, 22, a UK senior, lawyer Fred Peters said Tuesday.

University of Kentucky police found the effigy on the Wednesday before Election Day hanging from a tree on the Lexington, Ky., campus.

UK President Lee Todd immediately called a news conference to denounce the incident, calling the act “deplorable” and “abominal.” “We’ve done many, many things to increase diversity,” Todd said. “I know this is not a reflection of this institution.”

While the incident was in poor taste, authorities nonetheless overreacted by pursuing criminal charges, Peters said.

“If they had hung Joe Biden, we would not be here,” Peters said.

Joe Biden is a Democrat and Vice President so if he is angry with POTUS he should be angry with Joe Biden also.
It’s the same way with FLOTUS she and Jill Biden basically promote the same causes but you don’t see Mrs Biden treated the way FLOTUS is treated and everyone knows why
I think the Bidens are good people

  • Just a heads up for my fellow TCM lovers: They will be showing The Learning Tree this afternoon at 1pm EST. It’s a great film about the coming of age of a Black teen in Kansas. It was directed, produced and written by the late Gordon Parks. Here’s more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Learning_Tree

    A definite must see!

Good morning all. I have always loved this movie, make sure you have your box of tissues.

  • Et tu, Nas? Et tu?

Nas Gives Gwyneth Paltrow A Pass, “I Would Slap The Sh*t Out Of Somebody For Her, She’s A Real N*gga”

The N-Word debate continues to heat up as rap veteran Nas, who infamously tried naming his last solo album N*gger, has come to Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow’s defense.

Unfazed by Paltrow publicly referencing “N*ggas In Paris” at last week’s Watch the Throne concert in France, Nas stood by the movie star.

“I would slap the s*** out of somebody for Gwyneth Paltrow,” Nas told CBS Local exclusively. “She’s the homie, she’s cool. Gwyneth gets a pass. Real people get a pass. We know what this s*** is. We don’t interrupt Italians when they say ‘Wop’ to each other. They gonna punch you in the mouth if you interrupt that. Don’t interrupt us. We pick and choose.” Nas acknowledged that other black people might feel differently, but still stood by his statement. “Some might not feel the same way,” he said. “Some of us will get angrier about it than others; but some people get a pass. The people that I know who are cool and real n****s, Gwyneth Paltrow is a real n****, that’s my homie. That’s how I’m on it. Some people get a pass.” (CBS Local)

I find it interesting that not a single famous white man has jumped in to save Gwyneth, but I can name numerous black male celebrities who are running to save her. And these same black male celebrities, particularly the rappers, are the ones who disrespect black women all up in their lyrics. But they running to save Gwyneth after she used to n-word?

I can’t. I really can’t. I’m sick and tired of black men going above and beyond to save white women, but won’t do the same for black women. I see it in everyday life, not just in entertainment. And I still remember the names of all the “brothas” on Twitter who took up for Miss Joan Walsh, when she was playing victim after black women were calling her out on her “I resent black people” comments she made.

      • Miranda

Yet FLOTUS is disrespected and demeaned and these same kneegrows that run to defend Miss Ann aint nowhere to be found.

        • itgurl_29

Nowhere to be found. They could address that mess with one diss record to all these monsters hating on the First Lady. But they won’t. But they can’t come together as black men to defend a black woman, the First Lady of the United States of America. Instead, they all come together to take up for a white woman who thought it was to use the n-word on twitter. It’s crazy.

          • And for The Dream’s Teddy Ruxpin/Paddington Bear looking ass to go as far as LYING for this chick?? WTF?

Whatever Nas with your silly ass.

Lauryn Hill: I Didn’t Pay Taxes Because I Faced “Danger” And Went “Underground”

On Thursday, the U.S. Attorney’s office announced that Grammy-winning singer Lauryn Hill failed to pay taxes between 2005 and 2007 on $1.6 million of income and charged her with tax evasion. Hill spoke out about the accusations in a breathtaking statement posted on her Tumblr. The NJ resident said that there were dangers in being “manipulated and controlled by a media protected military industrial complex with a completely different agenda” so she retreated “underground” with her family to protect them. “When I was working consistently without being affected by the interferences mentioned [earlier], I filed and paid my taxes. This only stopped when it was necessary to withdraw from society, in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of myself and my family.”

    • Miranda

I gotta give her points for creativity!

      • Alma98

I’ve been thinking for awhile now that Lauryn is suffering from some sort of mental illness. It seem to have started after she had her first child.

        • isonprize

yeah, and nobody around to gently nudge her to treatment.

Not just Lauryn, either. There plenty of performers for whom therapy by a qualified provider would be of great benefit.

And by “qualified”, I certainly include being African American with an understanding of the shit we put up with on a daily basis therapists even before the talents are discovered. If not A-A, then certainly a provider with a open mind to understand the aforementioned shit. .

  • itgurl_29

I haven’t read the Michael Tomasky article, but I have to say, I mostly agree with BWD’s open letter. I’ve been unhappy about the communications arm of the administration and now the campaign. The President has success after success after success and yet his people don’t know how to sell this for him. It boggles me and pisses me off. He’s had the greatest first term since FDR and yet too many people all over this country think that he’s hasn’t done much of anything. A majority say they don’t like the ACA, yet a vast majority loves everything in it! That makes no sense and that a failure on the part of the President’s communications team.

IMO, the Obama campaign still acts like they’re dealing with a fair press. A truth telling press. Today, all over tv, the president is being lied on by the press. Telling people all over the country that the President thinks the economy is just fine. The press is actually cutting off his statement so they can lie on him. This is the kind of stuff only Fox used to do. Now it’s everyone from most of MSNBC to CNN to the NY Times. Why they continue to deal with the press like they’re fair is so frustrating to me.

I could go on and on, but they need to do something. Romney is going to outspend the President and the msm is going to continue to lie on him. Business as usual is not going to work. It didn’t worth with how they failed to sell healthcare and pretty much every other great thing PBO has done and it’s not going to work now.

    • Miranda

It doesn’t help that the “progressive” media nor the black media are actually willing to go to bat for POTUS. I really have no answer for how to overcome the gross malice displayed by the media on all fronts against this administration. I really don’t. A few progressive blogs, internet ads and tweets is just not going to overcome the combination of corporate media and corporate funded new media that works overtime to bash this President. The only way is for OFA to actually have a channel on Comcast, Infinity, Dish Network, etc. and its on radio station. This is literally a David vs Goliath type deal, but we need more than just a slingshot.

    • Alma98

I disagree with you; the president can’t control a media that is republican owned. He is not naive about the press; they did the same things when he ran in 2008. People saw through the lies and b.s. then and they’ll see through it in 2012. Someone on another blog said that Romney didn’t raise more money than PBO. That the Romney campaign counted pledged money that they haven’t received yet. This is a trick the republicans use all the time; they did it with McCain in 08 too. And as far as the media goes they can’t cover for Romney forever. What are they gonna do when the debates start?

      • itgurl_29

They were not this bad during the campaign. They have gotten worse since he came into office. They are now doing what only Fox used to do, and that’s clipping his statements to make it seem like he said something he didn’t. This is all of the msm doing this. That kind of deception was not going on in 2008.

        • Alma98

Yes they did, don’t you remember the (white folks clinging to their guns) statement that was completely misconstrued. Also the (lipstick on a pig) flap.

        • Miranda

My Dad said over Memorial Day “In 2008 they weren’t ready…this time they are”….2008 wasn’t supposed to happen in their minds and they really can’t believe that it did…so I don’t even think its wise for us to compare 2008’s campaign to 2012 at all, whether negative or positive. Its a totally different ballgame because the media bastards have now consulted with the GOP on just what to do. On top of that you got green-eyed kneegrows that are fighting to be that crab in the barrel to take PBO down. Then there are the fauxgressives that have been showing their asses since Rick Warren said a benign prayer that didn’t get anyone in the spirit (Rev Lowery had to save the day). The msm is all in, the sole patrol is all in, the fauxgressives are all in.

          All we got IS US.

          • Alma98

I know it’s different from 2008 in the sense that all of the msm is on the repub’s side. And I think the Obama campaign knows it to. I just wish people would stop saying the president is naive. It bothers me that people think PBO is so naive that he doesn’t know how to play the game. His supporters need to stop buying into the media bullshit.

          • itgurl_29

Your dad is telling the damn truth. I was glued to the campaign in 2008. And as bad as the press was then, they have nothing on how they have been these last few years. They’re ready and they are going to take him out. From Fox to ABC to MSNBC, they want him out of there. Period. I know people may not agree with this, but I honestly think he should openly run against the media. Include the msm as part of the problem, right along with the GOP and repugs in Congress. People hate the media as much as they do Congress.

          • Miranda

Add the NYTimes, Washington Post, The Associated Press, etc. Just because they have one or two people that will write a fact-based column (like the networks have 1 or 2 people with some sense), it doesn’t matter, the majority of their space for political coverage is blatantly biased against PBO. Just look at how they covered Wisconsin….you wouldn’t know that Scott Walker’s “victory” came with a DEM majority for the WI Senate. Meaning he can’t do SHIT. But let the media tell it, this was just a horrible week for PBO. They were giddy as hell to report this big money month for Romney – but that got quiet as more people started asking if its cash on hand or pledged money (i.e. invisible money) they’re tallying up.

I know it may sound racist to some, but my Daddy has a saying that I swear by and I stupidly forget sometimes but he had to remind me and my siblings and cousins over the holiday weekend “y’all must not know bout the white man.”

    • MonieTalks

Like Miranda said, there is no way to overcome the intentional malice of the media towards this President. They are more concerned with casting him as a liar….catching a misspeak….or being his so-called performance purveyors instead of reporting his record. That is why there is this obsession that he has not lived up to his expectations. For example, the Guantanamo non- closure is one of the biggest oft-repeated “failures” of PBO that is his fault at all. Journaliss, policymakers t and even statesmen like Colin Powell often repeat it, but should know better. Congress BLOCKED its closure, would not appropriate the funding even after PBO signed an EO as soon as he took office. And yet you never hear COngress killed the closure of Guantanamo. That is just one of the biggest lies repeated and spread..even by his so-called supporters.

I often go back to Malcolm X’s quote: “The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses.”

Not to mention, lotsa of folks subscribe to the “well every time POC run something they ruin it” sentiment. PBO has been blamed and criticized for his predecessor’s shortcomings at a rate I have never seen in my life. It is almost surreal how the pundunces now seem to have finally took notice of injustices our communities have been shouting about even before I was born. Earlier today, Huffpo had a headline concerning inmates returning back to society and having a hard time being accepted back in and regaining employment. Underneath was the photo of a Black guy trying to acclimate into society. Really, bitch? She considered that a blazing headline…..and her intent as usual was to make it seem as if this President was not doing enough to tackle this issue.

Fauxgressives. purists, the PL and especially these Black media pundances who all of a sudden jumped on the “presidential performance meter” have been the president’s greatest enemies. Every time they start off with,”I think PBO has done a fair job, BUT……. that right there contributes to this environment of distorting and shortchanging this president’s record, plain and simple.

      • itgurl_29

Just as you and I and everyone else knows about the corrupt media, don’t you think that they do too,the same team that pulled it off last time? WE HAVE to BECOME THE MEDIA through the social networks. Forget the, ‘oh the media this,oh the media that, which pundit said what’,and do something constructive towards the cause that would make youfeel more empowered, even if it is a letter to the Prez!
