Saturday Open Thread: Little Known or Interesting Black History Facts

Concluding this week’s theme, here are the last 5 facts…

FACT 1:In 1829, David Walker of Boston publishes An Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World which calls for a slave uprising in the South.

The fiery-militant David Walker was born on September 28, 1785, in Wilmington, North Carolina.  His father was an enslaved African who died a few months before his son’s birth, and his mother was a free woman of African ancestry. Walker grew up to despise the system of slavery that the U.S. government allowed in America.  He knew the cruelties of slavery were not for him and said, “As true as God reigns, I will be avenged for the sorrow which my people have suffered.”  He eventually moved to Boston during the 1820s and became very active within the free black community.  Walker’s intense hatred for slavery culminated in him publishing his Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World in September 1829. The Appeal was smuggled into the southern states, and was considered subversive, seditious, and incendiary by most white men in both northern and southern states.  It was, without a doubt, one of the most controversial documents published in the antebellum period.

Walker was concerned about many social issues affecting free and enslaved Africans in America during the time.  He also expressed many beliefs that would become commonly promoted by later black nationalists such as: unified struggle for resistance of oppression (slavery), land reparations, self-government for people of African descent in America, racial pride, and a critique of American capitalism.  His radical views prompted southern planters to offer a $3000 bounty for anyone who killed Walker and $10,000 reward for anyone who returned him alive back to the South.  Walker was found dead in the doorway of his Boston home in 1830.  Some people believed he was poisoned and others believed that he died of tuberculosis.

In 1830, African American delegates from New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia meet in Philadelphia in the first of a series of National Negro Conventions to devise ways to challenge slavery in the South and racial discrimination in the North.

FACT 2:In 1831, Jarena Lee’s The Life and Religious Experience of Jarena Lee, A Coloured Lady, was the first autobiography by an African American woman.

Born in Cape May, New Jersey, the early years of Jarena Lee were spent working as a domestic servant.  In her twenties, she was converted, sanctified, and received a call to preach.  When her request for approval to preach was rebuffed by the African Methodist Episcopal Church, she married an AME minister.  His death within a few years of the marriage left Lee a widow with two young children.  In order to support her family she renewed her request to the Rev. Richard Allen, the Bishop of the African Methodist Church who then granted her official church approval to preach.

Lee’s evangelistic meetings took place in her home city of Philadelphia and also throughout New England, Canada and west into Ohio.  She recounted her meetings in her autobiography, the first to be published in the United States by an African American woman. In that autobiography, Lee  frequently mentions the denominational and racial composition of her audience, which, in both cases, was quite inclusive.  Between 1849 and 1857, there is no recorded history about her.  The last known event in her life was a visit she made to the home of Rebecca Cox Jackson, a Shaker leader, on New Year’s Day in 1857.  After that occasion, at the age of 73, nothing is known about her life or death.

New Brooklyn museum exhibit highlights political art from civil rights period
    – – — –The 1960s were a heady time in America—marked by assassinations, riots, violent clashes with law enforcement and the peak of the civil rights movement. Those of us who were not yet born are mostly familiar with that era via history books, old news reels and family stories. But there is another way that that the 1960s were documented—the arts.

Witness: Art and Civil Rights in the Sixties, a new book from Monacelli Press, explores the way visual artists captured the politics and energy of that era. Edited by Brooklyn Museum curator Dr. Teresa Carbone and Columbia University professor Dr. Kellie Jones, the book features more than 100 artworks as well as background information on the artists and context of the pieces. Photos, paintings, installations and even clothing are all featured in the book, which is a companion piece to a Brooklyn Museum exhibit of the same name that opens March 7th. The timing for the release of Witness is a nod to the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.

Dr. Jones, noted author and curator and daughter of the late Amiri Baraka, teaches many of the pieces featured in Witness as part of her art history courses, but she said that working on Witness shifted her view of some artists.

    – —Photographer Eunique Jones Gibson celebrates black history through her campaign, ‘Because of Them, We Can’– –
    – – – – –In February 2013, Eunique Jones Gibson set on a mission to tell a story about black history in a more visual and compelling way – and in just a year, she has completed a powerful photo series that tells this narrative through her campaign, Because of Them, We Can.

Gibson first earned recognition last year after she published a series of photos showing African-American children portraying iconic black history leaders, both past and present.

“Last year, right before black history month I started to think about the progress we have made as a people, as a community and how that progress translates into opportunities for my children,” Gibson told theGrio’s Lilly Workneh. “I started to think about the individuals who pretty much paved the way, past and present. Thinking in that vein, I started to think, because of them, we can.”

Following her initial release, Gibson receive a tremendous outpouring of support and was encouraged to continue the campaign to highlight numerous other influential figures.

Kremlin Clears Way for Force in Ukraine; Separatist Split Feared

    MARCH 1, 2014

SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine — As Russian armed forces effectively seized control of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula on Saturday, the Russian Parliament granted President Vladimir V. Putin the authority he sought to use military force in response to the deepening instability in Ukraine.

The authorization cited a threat to the lives of Russian citizens and soldiers stationed in Crimea and other parts of Ukraine, and provided a blunt answer to President Obama, who on Friday pointedly warned Russia to respect Ukraine’s territorial sovereignty.

Even before Mr. Putin’s statement in Moscow, scores of heavily armed soldiers had tightened their grip on the Crimean capital, Simferopol, surrounding government buildings, shuttering the airport, and blocking streets, where they deployed early Friday.

Large pro-Russia crowds rallied in the eastern Ukrainian cities of Donestk and Kharkiv, where there were reports of violence. In Kiev, the Ukrainian capital, fears grew within the new provisional government that separatist upheaval would fracture the country just days after civil unrest ended in the ouster of President Viktor F. Yanuovych, a Kremlin ally who fled to Russia.

In Crimea, in the south, scores of heavily armed men fanned out across the center of the regional capital, Simferopol. They wore green camouflage uniforms with no identifying insignia, but they spoke Russian and were clearly part of a Russian military mobilization. In Balaklava, a long column of military vehicles blocking the road to a border post bore Russian plates.

The Russian mobilization was cited by American military and intelligence analysts as the basis for Mr. Obama’s warning that “there will be costs” if Russia violated Ukrainian sovereignty.

On Saturday morning, there was no immediate response from the White House; officials had acknowledged on Friday that Washington’s options were limited.

There was also limited response from Europe. Carl Bildt, the Swedish foreign minister, issued a statement saying that Russia’s actions in Crimea were “contrary to international law and the principles of European security.”

Mr. Yanukovych’s refusal, under Russian pressure, to sign new political and free trade agreements with the European Union last fall set off the civil unrest that last month led to the deaths of more than 80 people, and ultimately unraveled his presidency.

While Western leaders grappled for a response on Saturday, a Ukrainian military official in Crimea said Ukrainian soldiers had been told to “open fire” if they came under attack by Russia troops or others.

In addition to the risk of open war, it was a day of frayed nerves and set-piece political appeals that recalled ethnic conflicts of past decades in the former Soviet bloc, from the Balkans to the Caucasus.

On Saturday morning, the pro-Russia prime minister of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, declared that he had sole control over the military and the police in the disputed peninsula and appealed to Mr. Putin for Russian help in safeguarding the region. He also said a public referendum on independence would be held on March 30.

The Kremlin has denied any attempt to seize Crimea, where it maintains important military installations, including the headquarters of its Black Sea Fleet. But the Kremlin quickly issued a statement saying that Mr. Aksyonov’s plea “would not be ignored” and within hours the Federation Council, the upper chamber of Parliament, had authorized military action.

The authorization, while citing Crimea, covered the use of Russian forces in the entire “territory of Ukraine” and its time frame extended indefinitely “until the normalization of the sociopolitical environment in the country.” Parliament also asked Mr. Putin to withdraw Russia’s ambassador to the United States.

    • No troops. Just shut off the money faucets and imo Putin will cave.

      • goldenstar

You know that PBO and Kerry are working the secure phones as we woke up and are going to do so through the day. They have a coalition that will tell Putin to join the rest of the civilized world.

  • Papers offer peek into Hillary Clinton’s failed healthcare initiative

About 4,000 pages of newly released documents from her husband’s presidency show that Hillary Rodham Clinton got good advice from aides on her healthcare effort but often failed to heed it.,0,6997521.story#ixzz2ujeSPJys

A lot of memories of that debacle came back to me after reading this article. There were varying factors but the Clinton’s showed some serious bad judgement.

I remember Bob Dole standing beside Hillary saying they were ready to move on healthcare. The same Bob Dole who along with Howard Baker and Tom Daschle at PBO’s request wrote his health care bill.

They had people like Lincoln Chafee on their side before they ticked him off so bad that he was going to do whatever it took to kill healthcare reform. You don’t go to the microphone unless he’s standing right next to you. The man had been working on healthcare for decades!

Clinton picked his wife to head the task force instead of a Democrat and Republican. This thing has to go through Congress and choosing someone with no real world experience in this field that’s a lightning rod to the other side and shaky with her own potential allies was frightfully idiotic. Of course threatening Congress with a veto pen when the process has barely begun doesn’t help either.

The senior aides laid out a blueprint to get this done and through incompetence, arrogance and lack of discipline the Clintons blew it completely times the radius squared.

    • goldenstar

I am so happy that these papers are released now to keep the truth alive and in front of the revisionists. There are some Clinton creeps talking about health care and how PBO couldn’t do the right thing. Well, these docs will reveal how the CLINTONS screwed up the right thing. Who’s to trust that they have learned from all these mistakes?

      • Recent history says the answer is no they didn’t learn anything. I go back to 2008 when they mocked the 50 state strategy, chose Mark Penn to burn through their cash, had zero and I mean zero strategy for winning caucuses (they don’t count you know except of course if you’re like running for the nomination and need delegates), got completely out smarted and out maneuvered by Team PBO and a host of other stuff. Even now not fully investing in 2014.

I think any Democrat running against Hillary has to make her judgement the central issue. It’s not a one shot deal. There’s a history.

Wanting to be President because your husband was President is not a good enough reason.

        • jds09

I could not agree more. HRC’s decision making process is a awful combination of a “trusted inner circle” + limited data + believing your own hype.

The Mark Penn thing did it for me, forever. She trusted one guy to gather the data, interpret it for her and inform her strategy. I do not want that approach in the White House ever.

While PBO had multiple independent polling that feed into a team of advisers whose strategies were tested against real world/real time data.

          • Penn had never run a campaign anywhere ever but Clinton gave him the keys and said do what you want. He did.

          • jds09

Yeah, just think about that. Another squandered opportunity, first healthcare (my family could have used it back then) and then a 40pt polling lead. She was out of it the day after Super Tuesday, the rest of her run was an exercise in ego.

        • Miranda

I completely agree. Once again, their arrogance will be their undoing.

    • jds09

I’m off to read the article….but damn, the lighting in the photo of HRC is harsh. Wooo.

      • I noticed that myself and the job she’s applying for adds at least 25 years to whoever gets it. PBO has worn it well but you can see even with him it takes a toll.

      • goldenstar

Sorry, but that ain’t the light. It’s what too much light does to skin color that’s too light.

        • conlakappa

—–Crucial Evidence in Pistorius Case: Reeva’s Clothes
    – — —The Oscar Pistorius murder trial begins Monday in South Africa, and NBC reports that prosecutors think victim Reeva Steenkamp’s clothes will help them score a conviction. She was wearing a black top and white shorts when Pistorius shot her through the bathroom door in the middle of the night. That is, she wasn’t wearing pajamas or sleepwear, and prosecutors say that contradicts Pistorius’ claim that they had been sleeping when she got up to use the bathroom. He says he mistook her for an intruder, but prosecutors say she was trying to escape a violent argument.

“We believe that Reeva was probably running away and she locked herself in the bathroom,” says a spokesperson for the prosecution team. “There is a piece of evidence around the clothes that could suggest what happened there,” says another spokesperson. “To disclose it now would be to disclose a lot of our thinking around the case before the time.” Come Monday, expect OJ-level coverage from the world media and liberal use of the phrase “trial of the century.” Parts will be televised live in South Africa, and Voice of America notes that one station is launching a 24-hour channel devoted to coverage.
