Saturday Open Thread: More African-American Firsts

This week’s open threads focused on the accomplishments of several African-Americans.

Blanche Kelso Bruce (March 1, 1841 – March 17, 1898) was a U.S. politician who represented Mississippi as a Republican in the U.S. Senate from 1875 to 1881 and was the first elected non-white senator to serve a full term. Hiram R. Revels, also of Mississippi, was the first to ever serve in the U.S. Congress, but did not serve a full term. He is the first African American whose signature appeared on U.S. paper currency.

Bruce was born in Prince Edward County, Virginia near Farmville to Pettis Perkinson, a white Virginia plantation owner, and an African-American house slave named Polly Bruce. He was treated comparatively well by his father, who educated him together with his legitimate half-brother. When Blanche Bruce was young, he played with his half-brother. As Blanche Bruce was born enslaved, because of his mother’s status, his father legally freed him and arranged for an apprenticeship so he could learn a trade.

In 1850, Bruce moved to Missouri after becoming a printer’s apprentice. After the Union Army rejected his application to fight in the Civil War, Bruce taught school and attended Oberlin College in Ohio for two years. Then he went to work as a steamboat porter on the Mississippi River. In 1864, he moved to Hannibal, Missouri, where he established a school for blacks.

During Reconstruction, Bruce became a wealthy landowner in the Mississippi Delta. He was appointed to the positions of Tallahatchie County registrar of voters and tax assessor before winning an election for sheriff in Bolivar County. He later was elected to other county positions, including tax collector and supervisor of education, while he also edited a local newspaper. In February 1874, Bruce was elected by the state legislature to the Senate as a Republican, becoming the second African American to serve in the upper house of Congress. On February 14, 1879, Bruce presided over the U.S. Senate becoming the first African-American (and the only former slave) to do so. In 1880, James Z. George was elected to succeed Bruce.

At the 1880 Republican National Convention in Chicago, Bruce became the first African-American to win any votes at a major party’s nominating convention, winning 8 votes for vice president. The presidential nominee that year was James A. Garfield, who won election.

In 1881, Bruce was appointed by President Garfield to be the Register of the Treasury, making Bruce the first African-American whose signature was represented on U.S. paper currency.  Bruce served as the District of Columbia recorder of deeds in 1890–93 and earned a salary of $30,000 per year.  He was appointed as Register of the Treasury a second time in 1897 by President William McKinley and served until his death in 1898.

On June 24, 1878, Bruce married Josephine Beal Wilson (1853–February 15, 1923) of Cleveland, Ohio amid great publicity; the couple traveled to Europe for a four-month honeymoon. Their only child, Roscoe Conkling Bruce was born in 1879. He was named for New York Senator Roscoe Conkling, Bruce’s mentor in the Senate. In 2002, scholar Molefi Kete Asante listed Blanche Bruce on his list of 100 Greatest African Americans

    Good Morning!

Today in Texas, former prosecutor and judge Ken Anderson pled guilty to intentionally failing to disclose evidence in a case that sent an innocent man, Michael Morton, to prison for the murder of his wife. When trying the case as a prosecutor, Anderson possessed evidence that may have cleared Morton, including statements from the crime’s only eyewitness that Morton wasn’t the culprit. Anderson sat on this evidence, and then watched Morton get convicted. While Morton remained in prison for the next 25 years, Anderson’s career flourished, and he eventually became a judge.

The death penalty system in Texas to many is a profit center. For reason(s) given to prosecute Anderson, all former prosecutors migrating into various parts of Texas “justice” system should be reviewed.

Tax Breaks for Wealthy Targeted by Democrats in Budget Talks

Millionaires who avoid payroll taxes by claiming income as business
profits are among those in Democrats’ sights as congressional budget negotiators seek a deal by next month.[….] Limiting the ability of some business owners to use the S-corporation structure would save $12 billion over the next 10 years[….]

In addition to closing what Democrats call the “John Edwards/Newt
Gingrich loophole,” the party’s list of options includes
carried-interest treatment that allows hedge-fund managers and
private-equity advisers to pay a 20 percent tax rate on their income
instead of the nation’s top income rate of 39.6 percent. Ending that break would save more than $17 billion over a decade, according to the Democrats’ estimates.[….]

Another lets U.S. companies deduct their expenses when they send their plants overseas, which Democrats say encourages offshoring of American jobs. It would raise $200 million. Ending preferences for corporate jets and subsidies for yachts and vacation homes, combined, would bring in another $19 billion.[….]

Minnesota will bar up to 107 nurses with criminal histories

As many as 107 nurses in Minnesota will be barred from providing direct care to patients after the state Department of Human Services (DHS) learned that they had criminal records that disqualified them from that privilege. The agency acted after the Star Tribune
presented it with the names of 294 actively licensed nurses who have convictions, ranging from criminal sexual conduct to assault to fraud, that by law would appear to disqualify them from working with patients.

The agency agreed to review the cases, and found that about a third had not been disqualified.DHS Inspector General Jerry Kerber said due to gaps in its background check system, the agency was unaware of the nurses’ criminal histories.[….]

I would like more details into exactly how long ago the person got that record in relation to when they got their nursing license. At some point, there will need to be a reassessment if simply having a criminal record is enough to disqualify an otherwise qualified person from certain professions. “criminal sexual conduct” could be a relationship a 17 yr old had with a 16 yr old girlfriend/boyfriend.

      • conlakappa

One of my relatives learned that a charge dating back to a joint found in her purse 35+ years prior would disqualify her from getting licensed to practice nursing in Minn. This went down about 2 or 3 years ago. The crazy thing is that it wasn’t even her drugs but in a borrowed purse. She had never done drugs but that charge has dogged her for years.

Man Who Planned Armed March On Washington Convicted Of Gun Charge

Gun activist Adam Kokesh pleaded guilty Wednesday to weapon and drug charges, months after posting a video of himself loading a shotgun in the center of Washington, DC. Kokesh had planned to lead an armed march on Washington to “put the government on notice,” even though it is against the law to openly carry weapons in the District of Columbia.

Eventually, he aborted the DC march in favor of a “Revolutionary Army” in all 50 states he called on to overthrow the government and posted a video that clearly showed him armed with the Capitol in the distance. He faces sentencing in January.

House GOP Leader: No Vote On Immigration Reform This Year

The third-ranking House Republican told immigration advocates that

Special teddy bear could help kids cope with diabetes

For young children with type 1 diabetes, days are filled with constant monitoring, finger pricking and insulin injections. But one inventor is aiming to bring these children a bit of comfort during these activities, as well as to teach them the importance of staying healthy — he created a teddy called Jerry the Bear, who also has

This teddy bear’s sensors connect to a central Android system, which runs a unique operating system. Jerry comes with a handful
of interactive storybooks and games. Children can feed Jerry, regulate his insulin with injections and prick his fingers to monitor his blood sugar. A large, colorful screen in the center of Jerry’s chest provides not only a medical readout, but a space for children to play games.[..]

NYT: Cut In Food Stamps Forces Hard Choices On Poor

For many, a $10 or $20 cut in the monthly food budget would be absorbed with little notice. But for millions of poor Americans who rely on food stamps, reductions that began this month present awful choices. Mr. Simmons’s allotment from the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly called food stamps, has dropped $9. He has already spent the $33 he received for November.

Food stamps are likely to be cut more in the coming years if Congress can agree on a new farm bill, which House and Senate negotiators began tackling this week. The Republican-controlled House has approved cutting as much as $40 billion from the program over 10 years by making it harder to qualify. The Democratic-controlled Senate is suggesting a $4 billion cut by making administrative changes. “We’ll be on our last $3 at the end of the month,” said Rafaela Rivera, 34, a home health aide who earns $10 an hour.

Obama says current U.S. policy towards Cuba ‘doesn’t make sense’
    Saturday, November 9, 2013 9:18 EST

The United States must continue to update its policy towards communist Cuba, President Barack Obama said late on Friday, speaking at the home of a prominent Cuban-American activist.

Freedom in Cuba will come from the work of activists, Obama said, but the United States can help in “creative” and “thoughtful” ways.

“And we have to continue to update our policies,” said Obama, speaking at a political fundraiser at the home of Jorge Mas Santos, head of the Cuban-American National Foundation (CANF).

“Keep in mind that when Castro came to power, I was just born. So the notion that the same policies that we put in place in 1961 would somehow still be as effective as they are today in the age of the Internet and Google and world travel doesn’t make sense.”

Swastikas, Slurs and Torment in Town’s Schools
Pine Bush, N.Y., School District Faces Accusations of Anti-Semitism

The swastikas, the students recalled, seemed to be everywhere: on walls, desks, lockers, textbooks, computer screens, a playground slide — even on a student’s face.

A picture of President Obama, with a swastika drawn on his forehead, remained on the wall of an eighth-grade social studies classroom for about a month after a student informed her teacher, the student said.

For some Jewish students in the Pine Bush Central School District in New York State, attending public school has been nothing short of a nightmare. They tell of hearing anti-Semitic epithets and nicknames, and horrific jokes about the Holocaust.

Barb posted about this in last night’s thread. Quite frankly, if what the book states is accurate, just makes me admire my President all the more………..Here’s the clip:

New book adds to deep rooted controversy
    11/08/13 06:23PM

Newest “Game Changing” book contributes to the already complicated relationship between Pres. Obama and the black community. Michael Dyson and Panel discuss.

    from the book:
“Obama had little patience for the ‘professional left’ and vinishly close to zero for what one of his senior african american aides, michael strauthmanis, referred to as ‘professional blacks’ (as opposed to black professionals).

“Apart from Georgia congressman John Lewis and Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, Obama had nearly as much contempt for the CBC as he did for hte tea party caucus.

“New York’s Charlie Rangel, he derided as a hack; Jesse Jackson, Sr. was effectively banned from the white house. Obama remembered all too well a conversation with (Cornel) West in 2009, in which the professor used the precious time to complain about his seating at the inauguration.”

    • Alma98

I believe that’s true too Miranda, we have always said PBO didn’t give a damn about the professional left lol.
The black professional thing is also true they’re only black when it suits their grifting.

      • Miranda

To be honest, I doubt this is really a revelation for black people who pays attention to the President. I can guarantee you that more black people than not would read that and chuckle to themselves while nodding their head and feeling MORE love for PBO.

        • Alma98

        • TyrenM

Thinking same thing. Heileman and Dick only wrote that shit trying to divide Black people – Our Prez v. Our Congress Critter.

    • itgurl_29

Makes me love him even more. “professional blacks” indeed, Mr. President. They play negro for a paycheck and don’t give a damn about the black community.

      • TresL

Amen! I could not have said that better.

      • Miranda

Barack Obama saw through these folks like he had X-ray vision. He saw through their bullshit and pissed them off because he refused to participate in that hustle. He went about being for the people and in the process exposed all the flim flam “negro” signifiers.

    • itgurl_29

Oh, and remember how when Obama went to the CBC weekend back in 2003 when he was exploring a Senate run and some women in the CBC propositioned him for sex in exchange for their endorsement.

I still to this day think one of those nasty women was Stephanie Tubbs Jones. The way she attacked him was beyond the pale. And I think it was much more than her just being being Mammy to Hillary’s Scarlett. She was attacking like a woman scorned. He must have turned her down real bad. I mean like, looked her up and down and then laughed in her face, kind of bad.

      • Alma98

        I didn’t know this!

        • itgurl_29

Yeah, it’s true. It was in a book, told to the author by Jeremiah Wright. The President was stunned by how ingorant the CBC weekend was. It was like freaknik’ for old people.

          • Alma98

LMAO@ ” It was like freaknik’ for old people.”

          • Miranda

________________________I remember that. I remember PBO was stunned at the utter foolishness of it all.

          • gn

I’m lmao but also pissed: that is super-duper-uber trifling. Trifling squared. Trifling to the infinity and beyond. If this is how they behave to another politician, how are they behaving with less powerful constituents who approach them for help? Rhetorical question, we all know the drill.

          • I honestly don’t know why he was stunned. Given their track record of not bringing an actual bill to the House floor for a vote should have been his first clue to how unserious they were.

      • TresL

Now that’s too funny. PBO knows most of them ain’t about shit.

          • trose1

    • Kennymack1971

Blacker Thou Inc has already hit the fainting couches over this. This President does not suffer fools and bullshit artists and sadly a lot of these “Professional Blacks” are exactly that.

    • jziglar

James Peterson and Dyson need to shut the fuck up ! I’m so tired of hearing about President Obama talking down to the black community when he hasn’t. And the CBC ain’t shit and they didn’t pave the way for the President. There are some lawmakers who are good people but plenty of them are frauds.

      • annvic

The funny thing is, these two probably think they’re causing discord between Pres. Obama and Blacks, when in reality they’re just increasing the respect and love that’s already there. Know why? ‘Cause us lay negroes are sick of ’em too! These white progressives either forgot or don’t know about epic soul-dragging and wig-snatching that these Professional Blacks have faced from the black populace at large since 2007.

        • jziglar

I just find it so annoying that these guys whine about President Obama when they didn’t say shit when Bill Clinton was in office. And Peterson and Dyson are pretending that the animosity didn’t start when a number of CBC members attacked the President during the primaries in 2007-2008.

          • annvic

It is irritating the way that all these Clinton acolytes have stayed in the media with this “Well in Clinton’s day….”b.s. but this “revelation” is achieving nothing for them. Black people as a whole are distrustful of both the Professional Left and Professional Blacks (with plenty of reason) so what do they think this is going to accomplish? Hell all is makes me want to do is give Obama the big piece of chicken.

          • Miranda

And the best slice of that lemon pound cake.

          • Clinton gave them what they wanted. Invitations, good seats, endorsements, free tickets, access. PBO? Not so much and with good reason.

      • They keep whining about PBO’s commencement address at Morehouse and the his speech at the 50th Anniversary of the MOW, but there was nothing in those speeches that shows he “believes in Black pathology” as Dyson said.

    • President Barack Hussein Obama for three. Good! Basket counts and a foul plus eight technicals and 5 ejections.

He saw through their hustle from the git. That’s why they hate him. They never wanted to actually do anything. It’s always been about access for access sake. West and Smiley don’t have any plans. Never did and the CBC has never sponsored any major legislation.

The difference now is Bill Clinton indulged them knowing he didn’t have to really give anything in return. President Obama will not give these plutopimps the time of day. To top it off he blew up their game. Oh yeah they mad and they going to stay that way.

      • rikyrah

      • Miranda

HAHA! Actually I think its a 4 point play! He saw their shit from WAY behind the 3 point line. He saw that shit at half court.

      • THIS.

I don’t know why Dyson, Peterson and Finney were up their acting all shocked that there’s beef between PBO and the CBC, and forgetting all the effed up things they said and did against PBO.

Ironically, Dyson defended two people – Rangel and Waters – who either screwed over their constituents or did nothing to improve the socio-economics of those they represent.

    — –White Anti-Gay Activist Wins Election After Pretending To Be Black

    — – –An electrician best known for mailing homophobic fliers to thousands of Houston voters attacking the city’s lesbian mayor narrowly won an election to the Houston Community College Board of Trustees after he misled voters into believing that he is African American. Dave Wilson defeated longtime incumbent Bruce Austin, who actually is black, in an overwhelmingly African American district.

Wilson’s campaign fliers were filled with black faces that he admits to simply pulling off of websites, along with captions such as “Please vote for our friend and neighbor Dave Wilson.” Another flier announces that he was “Endorsed by Ron Wilson,” which is the name of an African American former state representative. Only by reading the fine print will voters discover that the “Ron Wilson” who actually endorsed Dave ishis cousin. The cousin lives in Iowa.

In an interview with a local TV station, the anti-gay activist turned
higher education policymaker did not deny that he intended to mislead the electorate, instead justifying his actions by claiming that “[e]very time a politician talks, he’s out there deceiving voters.”

It’s worth noting that Wilson was likely able to get within striking range of a 24-year incumbent member of the board due to a wave of scandals involving insider dealing by board members.
Nevertheless, he defeated the incumbent Austin by just 26 votes, so it is likely that Wilson’s deceptive campaign tactics helped push him over the edge to victory.

—From a commenter: — Tom Ogden: — Racist, homophobic, bigoted, and willfully ignorant people voted for him.– –OBVIOUSLY! geesh!!

    • Alma98

Sometimes people have no sense, how the hell you gonna vote for someone you’ve never seen. And how are you a poc living in Texas voting for bigotry, just shameful. We’ve got to do better. I bet this story will get some traction in some corners. While the one in Chicago about black legislators voting for gay marriage get barely a peep.

    – –The Koch Brothers Have Given Millions to Anti-Choice Organizations — –

    — –It is highly likely that most Americans would oppose politicians who promised to concentrate on promoting the interests of big business and the wealthy over the needs of the people, but since 2010 a large number of Americans have voted against their own self-interests and supported Republicans who openly promote policies that serve the rich over the rest of the population.</b. With the American economy making an ever-so-slow recovery with tens-of-millions of Americans suffering from a lack of good jobs, healthcare, and even adequate food, one would think Republicans and Democrats would make helping the people their top priority at the state and national level, but Republicans have taken another path.

Over the past three years Republicans have shown an inordinate
interest in restricting women’s reproductive rights as if withholding contraception, eliminating Planned Parenthood, and closing women’s health clinics will feed the hungry, create jobs, or provide Americans with adequate healthcare.
However, next to advancing the interests of corporations and the rich at the expense of the poor and middle class, escalating the war against women has been at the forefront of Republicans’ agenda since they rose to power in the House and state legislatures after the 2010 midterm elections.
    – — -SNIP — –

In 2010 when the conservative Supreme Court gave personhood rights to corporations at the behest of the Koch brothers and their millionaire cohort, most Americans knew the Kochs would spend hundreds-of-millions on Republican candidates to further their corporate agenda and to a point they certainly followed through. But part of the Koch’s corporate agenda includes heavily funding the Republican war against women in state legislatures that have passed more than 200 restrictions on abortion since 2011; the year those elected in 2010 took power according to the Guttmacher Institute.

    – —-*Recently suspended Miami Dolphins guard Richie Incognito does not have the support from NFL peers that he has received from teammates.

Incognito, who has been suspended indefinitely by the team in a
bullying scandal that has swept over the league and saw Dolphins tackle Jonathan Martin leave the team, has received public support from many of his teammates in recent days, including quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

But in an unscientific survey conducted by team reporters for
ESPN.com’s NFL Nation over two days this week, Incognito does not have the same level of support from some of his peers. Three players
participated from each team surveyed, with 72 players in all asked three questions. The players taking part were granted anonymity.

New Obama Admin Rule: Mental Illness, Addictions Must Be Covered Same As Physical Disease
    NOVEMBER 9, 2013, 12:28 PM EST327

WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s final: Health insurance companies must cover mental illness and substance abuse just as they cover physical diseases.

The Obama administration issued new regulations Friday that spell out how a 5-year-old mental health parity law will be administered.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said the rule should put an end to discrimination faced by some mental health patients through higher out-of-pocket costs or stricter limits on hospital stays or visits to the doctor.

New Absentee Votes Could Swing Va. AG Race to Herring
    Saturday, Nov 9, 2013 | Updated 12:52 PM EST

Newly counted absentee ballots in Virginia’s 8th District could swing the election of Attorney General to Democrat Mark Herring.

Brian Schoenenman, a Republican official on the Fairfax County Electoral Board, said via Twitter that a new vote count for the 8th District had 5,137 votes for Herring, 2,039 votes for Republican Mark Obenshain, and ten write-in votes. Schoeneman made the announcement after the board met early Saturday morning to investigate an apparent error in absentee ballot returns.

The new votes appear to erase Obenshain’s lead and give the election to Herring. Just 1,157 votes were separating the candidates by 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

    – – –Marissa Alexander Case Highlights Mandatory Minimum Sentencing Flaws

    — —The Marissa Alexander (pictured) case stands as one of the more baffling legal matters in some time, considering the outcome of the George Zimmerman trial in Florida earlier this year. Just as the former night watchman that shot and killed teenager Trayvon Martin claimed self-defense, Alexander claimed the same against an abusive spouse.
Yet, Zimmerman walks free despite evidence that suggests he should be serving time. Alexander, on the other hand, fired a warning shot at herhusband and that landed her a 20-year prison sentence. Earlier Friday, Roland Martin spoke with attorney Glenn Ivey on the “NewsOne Now” show about the difficulties surrounding the Alexander case and how mandatory minimum sentencing binds the hands of those fighting for fairness in the courts of law.

Mr. Ivey was a former federal prosecutor in Washington, and Martin
asked if he’s had a case where he knew a lesser charge could be applied despite the mandatory sentence, “We had a lot of cases, especially drug cases, where the drugs would elevate sentences to where there would be a mandatory minimum for it. And the guy was a first time offender, probably getting more time than he should have. There were some instances that were off the charts, 20-year sentences for first-time offenders.”
