    — –In 1963, Hood and Vivian Malone were physically blocked from enrolling at the school by Gov. George Wallace. Later in life, Hood and Wallace became friends.

    – - – - -James A. Hood, one of two black students whose effort to enroll at the University of Alabama in June 1963 led to Gov. George Wallace’s segregationist “stand in the schoolhouse door” and who later forged an unlikely friendship with the former governor, has died. He was 70.

Hood, who left the university after eight weeks but returned years later to earn a doctorate there, died Thursday at his home in Gadsden, Ala., northeast of Birmingham, according to a funeral home official.

—–FIRST — >The June 11, 1963, enrollment of Hood and Vivian Malone, who went on to become the first black graduate of the university, came during one of the most violent summers of the civil rights movement. The next day, Medgar Evers, a civil rights activist working for the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People in Jackson, Miss., was shot to death by a white supremacist. That September, four young girls were killed in the bombing of an African American church in Birmingham, Ala.

Explosive Allegations against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
    Jan 16, 2013 4:45 AM EST

Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert says the government of Benjamin Netanyahu spent almost $3 billion in the past two years preparing for a war against Iran’s nuclear program that it probably never intended to wage.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, Olmert said the sum was above and beyond the billions allocated to the defense budget and helped raise Israel’s fiscal deficit to heights it hadn’t reached in years. As a result, he said, Netanyahu would be forced to make broad spending cuts, if reelected next week, upsetting potential coalition partners that are accustomed to having their sectarian causes generously financed.

“The security establishment…on the instructions of the government spent an additional 11 billion shekels ($2.95 billion) beyond the regular budget of the Defense department to make preparations regarding a possible Israeli operation against Iran,” said Olmert, who is Netanyahu’s political rival.

He said the extra spending was designed to make the United States believe that Israel genuinely intended to attack Iran’s nuclear program. Netanyahu hoped the perception would prod President Obama, who opposes an Israeli strike, to organize tighter sanctions against Iran and take action of his own to prevent it from crossing the nuclear threshold.

“The general opinion of those that were involved [in the preparations] was that this was much more about rhetoric and less about a real determination to activate it,” Olmert told The Daily Beast.

    – -A minority posture for House GOP

    – - — House Republicans appeared to be coming to grips with a stark realization as they returned to Washington from a three-day retreat here — they have a majority in name only.

The party begins the 113th Congress with reduced numbers and confronting a popular president and an increased Democratic majority in the Senate.

Preparing for a cascade of fiscal battles and a presidential push on guns and immigration, the House GOP is adopting a minority posture, hoping to achieve modest goals incrementally while serving as a check on Obama’s ambitious second-term agenda.

Republicans “have to recognize the realities of the divided government that we have,” said Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), the party’s budget chief and 2012 vice presidential nominee.

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and his aides have taken to referring to the “Democrat majority in Washington” in statements in recent weeks.

The stance is a significant shift from the party’s mantra in the immediate aftermath of the November election, when Boehner and other leaders claimed one half of a dual mandate from voters who had reelected both Obama and the House Republican majority.

It also represents a resetting of expectations for Republican lawmakers and voters alike.

    – –THIS – - -Coming off what many viewed as a defeat in the fiscal cliff deal, and with Obama adopting a hardline position on fiscal matters, Republicans have diminished hopes of what they can force Democrats to accept. – -

    – —Dear NewsOne Readers:
With Barack’s second inauguration just a few days away, I wanted to take a moment to check in with all of you here at Interactive One, to reflect on the past year, and to look toward the work that remains.

First, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you did to inform people about the issues facing our country and the importance of making our voices heard in the election. You all did so much to help us all become more involved and engaged in our democracy—no matter who we were voting for—and that’s something you should be very proud of.

I especially enjoyed talking with Abena Agyeman-Fisher about the election, life at the White House, and all the issues that come up for Moms across the country. It really was a great conversation!

And now, as we look forward, there are so many ways that we can continue to engage with each other and our fellow citizens. For example, on Saturday, January 19th, we’ll be hosting my favorite event of inauguration weekend – the National Day of Service – when people from all across the country will come together to volunteer in their communities and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Chicago Passes Strong Law Against Wage Theft

The Chicago City Council yesterday adopted a law that will revoke the license of businesses found to engage in wage theft. This addresses a key problem for the city, as a study of Chicago workers “found that over 60 percent of workers are underpaid by more than $1 an hour while 67 percent were not paid their legally required overtime rate.”[....]

[....] “The conventional wisdom has been that to the extent there were violations, it was confined to a few rogue employers or to especially disadvantaged workers, like undocumented immigrants,” said Nik Theodore, an author of the study and a professor of urban planning and policy at the University of Illinois, Chicago. “What our study shows is that this is a widespread phenomenon across the low-wage labor market in the United States.”[....]

South Carolina Saved $3M Last Year On ‘Smarter’ Prison Terms

[....] In 2010, Malloy’s bill to reduce the prison terms for nonviolent offenders while strengthening penalties for some of the worst offenders was signed into law by the state’s Republican governor, and makes the conservative state a potential leader on criminal justice reform. Instead of the projected 3,200-inmate increase in the prison population by 2014, the population has already decreased by 2,700 since 2010.

Probation for those whose prison terms are shortened costs the state just $1,088 per year, as compared to $17,342 per year to keep someone in prison.
The state is routing all of the savings back into more sentencing reform, a substantial portion of which includes better training for staff that work with the more serious, violent prisoners and a program to show inmates how their crimes hurt others.

Those released from prison early, meanwhile, are participating in probation programs that provide incentives for good behavior, rather than punishing violators with an automatic return to prison. Those without family support are assigned a counselor — a move that has already doubled the rate of juvenile offenders successfully completing probation in one South Carolina county.[[....]

    – - -Rubio’s New Foreign Policy Adviser Called For War With Iran – –

    – - — The Tampa Bay Times reported on Friday that Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-FL) will name Foreign Policy Initiative executive director Jamie Fly his new top foreign policy and national security adviser.

Rubio — considered to be a top contender for the Republican nomination for president in 2016 — “has worked to establish his credentials in foreign affairs,” the Times notes, “espousing a hawkish view as he sits on foreign relations and the intelligence committee.” Indeed, Fly’s addition to Rubio’s team would boost the Florida Republican’s hawkish credentials, as Fly is an ardent supporter of war with Iran.

In October, 2011, Fly declared that diplomacy with Iran had “failed” and three months later, writing in Foreign Affairs, Fly and AEI’s Gary Schmitt called for an extended bombing campaign to damage Iran’s nuclear program and set the scene for regime change, a result Fly and Schmitt themselves acknowledged only “might” happen:
    – - -SNIP- –

    – –But for Rubio’s new top foreign policy adviser, military action appears to be the first option. If Rubio does indeed decide to run for president in 2016, his choice of Fly to be his top adviser is further indication that the Republicans just can’t quit the neocons. (HT: Michael Cohen)

Nearly half of new U.S. power capacity in 2012 was renewable — mostly wind

As predicted, almost half of the new power-generating capacity installed in the United States last year was renewable. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission recently released its December update on the nation’s energy infrastructure [PDF]. When we last checked on the data, it suggested that some 46 percent of new capacity — January through October — was renewable. Well, that ratio improved over the last two months of the year. Ultimately, 49.1 percent of new capacity was renewable.[....]

[....] Wind ended up being the biggest new source of capacity, beating even natural gas (which itself had a pretty good year). The question is: Can this pace be sustained into 2013? The tax credit was extended as part of the fiscal cliff deal, but only temporarily.[....]

FTC goes after kids’ vitamin claims (yogurt, too!)
    Posted on December 15, 2010

In its continuing effort to crack down on companies making deceptive claims that omega-3 promotes healthy brain and eye development in children, the FTC has just announced deceptive advertising charges against NBTY, a marketer of children’s vitamins.[....] The FTC cautioned the companies to make sure they had: “scientific evidence to support claims that their products boost, improve, enhance, or support brain and vision function and development in children…[and]claims relating to intelligence, cognitive function, learning ability, focus, mood, memory, attention, concentration, visual acuity, and eye health.”

Now, the FTC has reached a settlement with the companies for $2.1 million in refunds, not only because of the unsupported health claims but also because the products did not contain the advertised amount of omega-3′s (see legal complaint):[....]

10 Things Conservatives Support That Are MORE Invasive Than Background Checks For Gun Ownership

[....] The conservative echo chamber is opposed to any such changes to current background check laws and is calling such changes invasive. I’m assuming conservatives mean invasive to the privacy of those who want to own a firearm and invasive to rights in general. — -Young Reporters Ask All the Right Questions About Helping Military Families – -

    — – First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden are interviewed by young reporters during a kids magazine roundtable in the First Lady’s Office in the East Wing of the White House, Jan. 18, 2013. (Official White House Photo by Sonya Hebert)

Yesterday, the First Lady and Dr. Biden sat down with four exceptional young reporters from kids’ magazines to talk about their initiative to support military families, Joining Forces. The reporters – from Highlights, National Geographic Kids, Scholastic and TIME for Kids – asked some great questions about the initiative and how kids can help!

    Some of the takeaways?

Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden talked about how they encourage all Americans to look for ways to honor and support military families, and Dr. Biden said when her son Beau was deployed their church put his name in the bulletin to pray for him, people brought meals over, and someone shoveled her daughter-in-law’s driveway during a snowstorm.
Asked about advice for a military child who moves a lot, Dr. Biden encouraged them to get involved in sports teams and school activities. And as a teacher herself, she talked about how teachers can get involved to reach out to military kids. For example, Dr. Biden’s granddaughters’ teacher put a picture of her dad’s unit outside of her classroom so the entire class would know Beau was deployed.
Mrs. Obama encouraged all the kids’ magazines’ readers to think “what can I do?” for a new kid in school – especially a new military kid.

Retaking Our Schools, Remaking Society! – NCSPU 2013 Conference

On February 16th, The NC-Student Power Union will be holding a statewide organizing conference in Raleigh, North Carolina – our state capital. This conference will bring together leaders of social justice organizations, university faculty, and most importantly, students like us for a day of education, inspiration, and action.[....]

[....] Wealthy right-wing donors bought the North Carolina legislature and put Tea Party conservatives in the driver’s seat of our state. Their program is clear: public education and services will face massive cuts, and the general welfare of our state will be undermined to benefit the richest few. From voting rights to women’s rights, those in power want to take us backwards. North Carolina families, students, and workers cannot afford this regressive agenda – and we will not accept it. It is more urgent than ever to build upon multi-issue, grassroots mobilization efforts in NC. Our state has a rich history of activism and resistance, and as in the past, students must serve as leaders in the fight for social justice.[....]

Virginia Republicans Work To Implement Obamacare, Despite GOP Governor’s Opposition To Reform

[....] Even in states led by GOP politicians who remain resistant to health reform, like Virginia’s Gov. Bob McDonnell (R), some Republican officials are taking matters into their own hands to prepare for Obamacare’s implementation. Virginia Republicans — including some members of the governor’s own administration — are working behind the scenes to plan a health exchange, despite Gov. Bob McDonnell’s resistance to reform:[....]

[....] Virginia isn’t alone. Even before the presidential election, conservative officials in states like Mississippi, Kansas, and Arizona were working under the radar to quietly prepare their states for the inevitable wave of health care reforms. Those Republican lawmakers have begun to clash with the other members of their party because they realize that resisting Obamacare may not be in their best interests anymore — particularly when it comes to setting up exchanges, which the federal government will simply step in and do for the states that refuse to do it themselves.

Great share! Did you give Ken a hug from me? He’s cute in a nerdy little way.

MSM always “underestimates” any thing to do with President Obama. Enjoy yourself there & keep sharing!

      • conlakappa

No hugging–he had a lot of security around him. He was interviewed by EFE (in Spanish) and a couple of English-language channels. I have seen Salazar around town before and without his detail.

Mind you, there is a ton of media here. MTV sent hipsters. CNN and CBS have big-assed setups right smack dab in the middle of things. And big-assed screens broadcasting… themselves.

One of the folks I saw coming to town was Dikembe Matombo. I had to go to NYC for work on a one-day trip so that means the Acela. I have always seen someone famous/infamous on it. Dikemebe had to slightly crook his head as he walked through the train. That was a crowded-to-the-gills train and I’ve seen a lot of people coming into town today. Again, all types. Everyone with a black child seems to be in town!

        • Aquagranny911

COOL! You are so in the thick of all this. I’m enjoying it a lot. Did I say that when PBO got re-elected my demented Sis got this idea that she & I could go to DC on a “day trip” for this event, like just popping around the corner, no.

I will enjoy it all vicariously from people like you & what I can see on the internets & the tube.

In my opinion, Ella J. Baker is one of the many Unsung Heroes of the Civil Rights Movement. Though she championed equality for all, she refused to be pidgeon-holed because of her gender. Ms. Baker was married but made frequent trips alone into the Deep South–where her male counterparts refused to go because of the potential risks to their personal safety. Unfortunately, Ms. Baker was routinely labeled by some as an “agitator” because she challenged what she perceived as the marginalization of black women in the Civil Rights Movement. Undeterred by her critics, she persisted in stressing the crucial role that black women played in the struggle for equality and society–inspiring thousands of young college students (black and white, male and female) to become actively involved. She was way ahead of the curve on many social issues and led an extraordinary life.

    Who Was Ella Baker?

Ella Jo Baker was born on December 13, 1903, in Norfolk, Virginia. She developed a sense for social justice early in her life. As a girl growing up in North Carolina, Baker listened to her grandmother tell stories about slave revolts.[...] Baker studied at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina.[....] After graduating in 1927 as class valedictorian, she moved to New York City and began joining social activist organizations. In 1930, she joined the Young Negroes Cooperative League, whose purpose was to develop black economic power through collective planning. She also involved herself with several women’s organizations. She was committed to economic justice for all people and once said, “People cannot be free until there is enough work in this land to give everybody a job.”

Ella Baker began her involvement with the NAACP in 1940. She worked as a field secretary and then served as director of branches from 1943 until 1946. Inspired by the historic bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955, Baker co-founded the organization In Friendship to raise money to fight against Jim Crow Laws in the deep South. In 1957, Baker moved to Atlanta to help organize Martin Luther King’s new organization, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). She also ran a voter registration campaign called the Crusade for Citizenship.[....] On February 1, 1960, a group of black college students from North Carolina A&T University refused to leave a Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina where they had been denied service. Baker left the SCLC after the Greensboro sit-ins. She wanted to assist the new student activists because she viewed young, emerging activists as a resource and an asset to the movement.

Miss Baker organized a meeting at Shaw University for the student leaders of the sit-ins in April 1960. From that meeting, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee — SNCC — was born.[....] With Ella Baker’s guidance and encouragement, SNCC became one of the foremost advocates for human rights in the country. Ella Baker once said, “This may only be a dream of mine, but I think it can be made real.” Her audacity to dream big is a cornerstone of our philosophy. Her influence was reflected in the nickname she acquired: “Fundi,” a Swahili word meaning a person who teaches a craft to the next generation. Baker continued to be a respected and influential leader in the fight for human and civil rights until her death on December 13, 1986, her 83rd birthday.[....]

Senate considers ending Pharma pay-for-delay deals

US senators are introducing legislation to end pay-off deals that keep generic drugs off shelves and give pharmaceutical giants market exclusivity that costs consumers billions of dollars per year. The bid follows Thursday’s release of a Federal Trade Commission report documenting a significant rise in the number of so-called “pay-for-delay” agreements that smother competition in the massive drug industry.[....]

[....]The debate comes as the US Supreme Court is due to hear arguments in March on a case in which the FTC accuses generic drugmakers of accepting hefty payments in exchange for agreements to drop until 2015 legal challenges to the patents on a brand of testosterone gel.

U.S congressman: Office receiving ‘thinly-veiled threats’ over gun controlA U.S. congressman from Minnesota said that anonymous threats have been coming to his office from opponents of gun control, reported Think Progress.

On MSNBC’s UP with Chris Hayes on Saturday, Rep. Rick Nolan (D) told the host, “We’ve been getting a lot of not very thinly-veiled threats and calls into my office. You know, things like, ‘You tell him he better watch his back.’ Nobody has actually come out and said they’re gunning for me, but the messages are quite angry, vitriolic, and a little bit frightening to people at my front desk who have been taking the calls. I’m a little nervous about it. I’ve never been nervous before.”

He went on to say that the NRA is “very toxic in the effect they’re having on the American public.

    Raw Story (http://s.tt/1yGlP)

    • Aquagranny911

Dem Congress & probably even some Repubs will be “targeted” by these nutbuckets because the NRA doesn’t care who gets shot or killed as long as the weapons keep on flowing.

I’m sure a lot of the Congress is scared after what happened to Gabby Giffords. They all saw her limping painful entrance to their Chamber when she tendered her resignation as a Rep.

Most of them have families & can remember little Kristina Green plus the children killed at Newtown. This BS must be chilling their bones.

We have to try & support our Reps & Senators against this faceless menace which seeks to control us all with violence. We have to STAND, We just have to STAND!

I refuse to give my country up to a bunch of cud chewing goons!!!

Two people injured in accidental shooting at Raleigh gun showRaleigh, N.C. — At least two people were injured Saturday afternoon in an apparent accidental shooting at the gun show being held at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds.

Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after 1 p.m., and two people were loaded into ambulances.

A witness told WRAL that a gun went off after being checked by an official at a safety check-in location, hitting a man in the hand and a woman in the side.more here: http://www.wral.com/two-people-injured-in-shooting-at-raleigh-gun-show/12000843/

      ….and the beat goes on….

I found it interesting that WRAL closed the comment section for that story. I have so many things I could say about this but I just won’t.

      Irony: “Heh…”

    • Admiral_Komack

Guess that safety check-in wasn’t too safe.
Was the shooter a bad guy or a good guy?

      • Aquagranny911

The shooter was a dumb guy with a loaded shot gun at a public event. Too bad his mama didn’t use birth control!

I will happily take my seat in the Lounge & eat scraps & drink water for this comment.

Obama Brings GOP to Its Knees, Debt Ceiling Hostage Freed

We told you so. Forgive me for quoting myself, but here’s what I wrote in my last piece about the debt ceiling, explaining why the President was not going to give Congress an easy out on this: The president does not want to make the Republicans in Congress irrelevant in this conversation; he wants them to come to their senses – or more likely, to their knees – and raise the debt limit without being able to keep their hostage. Well, the Republicans have come to their knees.[....]

[....] Barack Obama is no one’s fool. He cares about this country more deeply than any president in most of our lifetimes. But he is also a consummate political genius. He will work with the opposing side for the good of the country; he will meet them more than half way if necessary to make progress. But you will not get away with trying hurt the country he loves. He will make you cry uncle. America’s enemies abroad already know that. It’s time our domestic politicians learned it, too. Let the following sum it up:

    Because I was kind,
    You thought I was a lamb;
    Because you went too far,
You will see I am a lion.
    And I will rise.

    • BoomerGal

I believe they finally saw the hand writing on the wall that this was Obama’s last term and he had nothing to lose by letting them hang themselves (allowing the country to default). They really didn’t have a choice and one of the MAIN reasons why they wanted to win the election. Too bad. So sad.
