    Stevie Wonder takes on Texas: Changing education on slavery is ‘unacceptable’

    [....] Singer Stevie Wonder took a moment during a panel discussion hosted by MSNBC’s Al Sharpton on Friday to criticize the Texas Board of Education’s attempt to gloss over the U.S. slave trade.

    “We really have to confront the educational system. Every single
    American must feel and know that they were a part of this United
    States,” Wonder said. “I think, that [school] books have to be rewritten — the whole notion of changing what happened during slavery time to saying it’s a fantasy — Texas — is unacceptable.”[....]

      Stevie Wonder didn’t talk long last night on Rev Al’s show but what he said was powerful.
      He spoke about the educational system and he basically said people who hate have a sickness.
      He was just getting started and the show was over.

    Colorado Proves Housing The Homeless Is Cheaper Than Leaving Them On The Streets

    [....] Earlier this year, state lawmakers appropriated $3.9 million to re-open Fort Lyon as a homeless shelter, which will ultimately house 200 people, many of whom are veterans.[....] The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless estimates that taxpayers spend $43,240
    per homeless individual in Colorado each year on everything from
    emergency health care to legal issues.

    A 2012 estimate found there are nearly 17,000 homeless persons in the Centennial State. As Hickenlooper notes, though, this money doesn’t even include “any effort to recover them” and help them transition off the streets. Housing 200 people at Fort Lyon, by contrast, will cost just $16,813 per person, less than half the cost of leaving them on the streets.

    The shelter opened this week and will be increasing capacity to 200 by July 2014 and 300 by July 2015.

    Michele Bachmann May Go From Congress to Prison as DOJ Launches Investigation

    [....] This is the first time that Marcus Bachmann has been named in reports as part of an investigation. The same troubled presidential campaign that the Department of Justice is looking at is also the subject of an investigation in Iowa, an FBI investigation, and a House Ethics Committee investigation.[....]

    The DOJ investigation stems from information obtained in the FBI
    investigation that appears to show the Bachmann’s violating at least 11 election laws by coordinating their campaign with a super PAC.[....]

  • creolechild

    This subject is rarely discussed by the press. I wonder why because contrary to popular opinion addiction to prescription drugs surpasses the use of other psychoactives such as heroine or cocaine…

    Fewer Young Americans Are Using Drugs — But An Increasing Number Of Older Americans Are

    [....] In 2002, about 3.5 percent of people aged 50 to 54 were using illegal drugs. Now, that number has more than doubled to 7.2 percent. Those aged 55 to 59 have seen an even greater increase, with more than triple the percentage (6.6 percent) using drugs in 2012 than the 1.9 percent that were doing so 10 years ago:[....] The trend towards using more painkillers could be of greater concern.

    In 2010, more women died from prescription painkiller overdoses than from cervical cancer and car accidents combined. Americans’ increasing penchant for opiates has also led pharmacies like CVS to take drastic measures such as cutting off prescription privileges for doctors who are found to prescribe too many pain pills.

    New York Times CEO Will Face Parliament Over BBC Pay Packages

    [....] The U.K.’s government-spending watchdog in July said the BBC broke rules on severance payments in spending 25 million pounds over three years to cut top jobs, paying some managers more than they were entitled — either to keep them as consultants or ensure they left quickly. The BBC handed out 150 severance packages over three years ending in December 2012.[....]

    The Metropolitan Police Service said last month that its Economic Crime office hadn’t found enough “evidence of dishonesty or criminal misconduct” to warrant an investigation. The BBC is funded by U.K. residents through an annual license fee charged to households that own televisions. The current fee is 145.50 pounds for a color TV license.[....]

    Thanks to Inmates Working Alongside Firefighters, Giant Sequoias are Safe

    Of the nearly five thousand personnel that have bravely battled the
    massive 19-day-old Yosemite Rim Fire, more than 550 are California inmates. Sentenced for non-violent offenses, 4,100 such inmates are stationed around the state as part of a partnership with the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).

    Without these work crews, firefighters would be scrambling to contain the blazes, especially fires of such historic size. In return for their service, inmates are allowed to stay at a camp where they live in barracks and receive nominal pay. Some may also get up to two days cut from their sentence for every day in camp. Some embrace the goal of becoming a firefighter one day. (Watch the video below or read the story from Natl Geographic)

    Healthcare job growth is bright spot in lackluster August jobs report

    While U.S. job growth was less than economists expected in August – increasing by 169,000 – the healthcare sector remained a bright spot, adding 32,700 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ jobs report issued today.

    In the healthcare sector, ambulatory healthcare services had the most growth, with 26,600 added jobs. Hospitals saw the least growth, adding only 900 jobs in August. Home healthcare services and nursing and residential care facilities continued to be solid, adding 9,500 jobs and 5,200 respectively.[....]

    OSHA’s investigation found the worker was fatally crushed in a machine used to make radiator cores, after management instructed and authorized workers to bypass the manufacturer’s barrier guard in order to adjust the machine to keep it running. OSHA also conducted two concurrent safety and health investigations at the company in February 2012, which resulted in 66 violations.[....]

    Without Warning, 57,000 Virginians Could Have Their Voter Registrations Cancelled

    [....]The process for removing registrations of people who have moved elsewhere varies from state to state, but generally involves periodic comparisons of lists between states to flag and remove people like Joe America who have moved elsewhere.[....] First and foremost, as multiple county registrars explained to ThinkProgress, voters whose registrations are being cancelled aren’t being given any advance notice.

    Rather than being mailed a warning letter asking if they still live in Virginia, they are being sent notices that their registration has been cancelled effective immediately. If the cancellation is in error, the letter says to contact the registrar and get it worked out.[....]

    Finally, the current purge is being conducted exceedingly close to the upcoming election. The deadline to register in Virginia is October 14, less than six weeks away.[....] When asked why the Board of Elections didn’t conduct this purge at an earlier time, Palmer wrote that August “was the first opportunity” they had after reviewing “data from other states and insertion of primary election voter history.”[....]

    Something like this happened earlier this year in Newark. The so-called leaders of the community and members of the Old Guard political establishment met to decide who should run for mayor. So much for letting the people decide. But you’ll never hear the Blackademics or the Sole Patrol call out these kind of shenanigans.

    Black leaders may ask some mayoral hopefuls to bow out
    By Travis Andersen and Andrew Ryan | Globe Staff September 05, 2013

    The race for mayor in Boston intensified on Wednesday night as dozens of leaders and activists from the city’s African-American communities met behind closed doors and considered asking some candidates of color to abandon their campaigns and rally behind the remaining hopefuls.

    Kevin C. Peterson, who helped spearhead the gathering at the Second
    African Meeting House of the Twelfth Baptist Church in Roxbury,
    described the meeting as “pretty heated up” in an update outside the
    building halfway through the nearly four-hour session.

    “There is some concerted interest in asking two or three of the
    minority candidates to step out of the race and endorse one or two”
    other candidates of color, said Peterson, who directs the New Democracy Coalition and who is a longtime friend and active supporter of candidate Charlotte Golar Richie.

    One option that was discussed, Peterson said, was asking the six
    candidates of color to meet and identify three hopefuls who would step
    aside. Those three candidates would then be urged to each endorse two candidates of color, he said.

      Let everyone run on their own merits and let the voters decide. That’s how the process is supposed to work. And if specific candidates are asked to concede and bow out gracefully, voters aren’t going to trust whomever gets the slot and will probably protest this calculated move by not showing up at all–for anyone. Charlotte Golar Richie should know better and will probably lose some support over this, as she should.

    Bloomberg’s at it again:

    In Conversation: Michael Bloomberg
    By Chris Smith Published Sep 7, 2013

    Then there’s Bill de Blasio, who’s become the Democratic front-runner. He has in some ways been running a class-warfare campaign—

    Class-warfare and racist.

    Racist?

    I mean he’s making an appeal using his family to gain support. I think
    it’s pretty obvious to anyone watching what he’s been doing. I do not
    think he himself is racist. It’s comparable to me pointing out I’m
    Jewish in attracting the Jewish vote. You tailor messages to your
    audiences and address issues you think your audience cares about.

    But his whole campaign is that there are two different cities here. And I’ve never liked that kind of division. The way to help those who are less fortunate is, number one, to attract more very fortunate people. They are the ones that pay the bills. The people that would get very badly hurt here if you drive out the very wealthy are the people he professes to try to help. Tearing people apart with this “two cities” thing doesn’t make any sense to me. It’s a destructive strategy for those you want to help the most. He’s a very populist, very left-wing guy, but this city is not two groups, and if to some extent it is, it’s one group paying for
    services for the other.

    It’s a shame, because I’ve always thought he was a very smart guy.

    MORE: http://nymag.com/news/politics/bloomberg/in-conversation-2013-9/index2.html#print

    • gn

      How is it “racist” of de Blasio to point out that he has a black child and therefore has insight into our concerns? Not even addressing remarks like “they are the ones who pay the bills.” Bloomberg is salty because he’s pretty much responsible for Quinn probably not making it out of the primary. Classless remarks.

    • BarbinAtlSouth

      “But his whole campaign is that there are two different cities here. And I’ve never liked that kind of division. The way to help those who are less fortunate is, number one, to attract more very fortunate people.”

      Bloomberg doesn’t see there are two cities because he isn’t in the poorer group.

      And attracting more “fortunate people” helps poor folks how? Providing more low paying service jobs that keep them in poverty?

      Did he just do this personality twist, or has he always been a little phallus?

      And, of course DeBlasio is racist! He’s talking about POC problems.

    – – — – -In the states refusing to accept Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion, approximately 42 percent of the Americans living below the Federal Poverty Line (FPL) — i.e., people making less than $11,170 per year — won’t be able to take advantage of any of the health law’s new coverage options for the poor, according to a new study by the Commonwealth Fund.

    The health law originally had two avenues to ensure that poor
    Americans can afford health coverage. It required every state to expand Medicaid coverage to all Americans making up to 133 percent FPL, or slightly under $15,000 per year for an individual. And it offered government subsidies to people making up to 399 percent FPL to help them buy insurance in Obamacare’s statewide insurance marketplaces. The law didn’t extend any government subsidies to the poorest Americans living below the poverty level, reasoning that these people would be eligible for an expanded Medicaid pool and therefore wouldn’t need them.

    But the Supreme Court ruled the Medicaid expansion optional last summer, leaving it up to the states to decide whether or not to participate in it. That means if poor Americans live in states that refuse to expand Medicaid, they won’t be able to take advantage of the expanded public program or receive subsidies to buy insurance on the Obamacare marketplace.

      Rural hospitals here in Georgia closing or close to it. Nathan Deal is getting paid to not accept the Medicaid expansion and folks like me are ska-rooood.

      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      Small rural hospital closes doors; more may follow
      By: Andy MillerPublished: Feb 4, 2013
      The Friday closing of Calhoun Memorial Hospital in the southwest Georgia town of Arlington reflects the financial squeeze that many rural facilities face.
      A handful of other rural hospitals in the state also may be teetering on the brink, with rising levels of uninsured patients and with Medicaid continuing to pay low rates for services.
      HomeTown Health, an organization of rural hospitals in Georgia, says a half-dozen facilities could follow Calhoun Memorial’s move and shut down in the coming months.
      Ironically, news of the nonprofit hospital’s closing came just hours after the state House passed a bill to facilitate renewal of the hospital provider fee. Jimmy Lewis of HomeTown Health said that if the bill had failed and the fee had vanished, more than 20 rural hospitals might have had to close.
      Many hospitals in rural counties, though they have managed to stay afloat, have already given up obstetrical services because of financial losses and difficulty in recruiting OB/GYNs to deliver babies. (Here’s a recent GHN article on the problem.)
      Earl Whiteley, CEO of Calhoun Memorial, cited the increase in charity care that the Calhoun County hospital incurred as a major reason for the hospital’s demise.
      He told GHN on Monday that indigent charity care rose from $834,000 in 2008 to $1.8 million last year.
      “You just can’t continue to give away free care,’’ Whiteley said.
      He also noted that the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA) is removing indigent care funds that go to hospitals. As originally envisioned under the ACA, the uninsured patients affected by that cutoff were to get coverage through Medicaid instead. But the U.S. Supreme Court ruled last year that states don’t have to expand Medicaid to cover such people, and Gov. Nathan Deal says Georgia won’t do it because it’s too costly.
      Calhoun County has an 18 percent unemployment rate, and Whiteley added that even patients with insurance had high deductibles, ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 a year. Those amounts can make it difficult for many people to pay medical bills until the deductible is reached.
      The impact of the closing on Calhoun County’s 6,600 residents may be profound. According to county health rankings produced by the University of Wisconsin, the county’s health outcomes already are ranked 154th in Georgia, ahead of only Terrell and Talbot counties. (Three of Georgia’s 159 counties did not receive a ranking.)
      Whiteley said with the closing, it may take residents 45 minutes to drive to the nearest hospital. The effect will be dramatic, especially for those needing emergency care, he said. “The golden hour is lost to many patients.’’
      (The “golden hour’’ is the time in which the lives of many critically injured patients can still be saved if full-scale hospital treatment, such as surgery, is provided.)
      The economic impact on Arlington and Calhoun County will be profound, with up to 100 employees losing jobs.
      Better Georgia: Governor using secret funds against Obamacare
      Group accuses Gov. Nathan Deal of utilizing money contributed from healthcare corporations to Real PAC, to fund the fight against the Affordable Care Act.
      Posted by Hunt Archbold (Editor) , September 05, 2013 at 03:43 PM
      The progressive advocacy groupBetter Georgia has charged the state’s governor with secretly using almost $1 million from a Republican action committee to fight Obamacare.
      The group accuses Gov. Nathan Deal of utilizing money contributed from healthcare corporations to Real PAC, to fund the fight against the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.
      In a post at the group’s website, Better Georgia Executive Director Bryan Long writes, “Instead of protecting the rights of Georgia residents under the new Affordable Care Act, Gov. Deal’s family and business associates have profited from a secret Super PAC funded largely by corporations and political action committees that either do business with the state or have a financial stake in legislation.”
      According to Real PAC’s disclosure forms, some of the biggest contributions came from the healthcare field, including United Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia and Wellcare of Georgia, each which contributed at least $20,000.
      Deal’s attorney said the governor has done nothing wrong and labeled the allegation “ridiculous.”
      Long goes on to explain that through disclosure forms, financial contributions from the healthcare supported political action committee is possibly going to GOP members with the intent of influencing their votes on Obamacare or funneled to other areas such as a slush fund to pay family and friends.”
          Hell no. Come with it. Very informative.
        • Aquagranny911
          I agree with Tyren. This was an important share. When I lived in rural Miss, I worked at a small county hospital which was crucial for medical care for people in 3 counties. Next closest hospital was nearly 45 minutes away.
          We didn’t do major stuff but the ER triaged & stabilized patients for transport to other facilities when needed. I think that mattered a lot for that “Golden Hour” in a serious emergency.
      emos are strident, holier-than-thou REGRESSIVES. That’s why they get along so well with Paulites and the far right. As far as I’m concerned, this asshole owes his seat to the Obama coalition because he couldn’t win election without the President’s coattails. Really classless and ridiculous.
    I hope that Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin understand just how far-reaching is the impact that their dear son’s legacy is having. I just saw a commercial for one of the candidates for public advocate in NY and one of her selling points was a pic of her participating in a hoodie march. Like the President and First Lady, Trayvon’s parents are loved like family by many of us. Can’t thank them enough for the positive changes which they and Trayvon are bringing to others’ lives, whether via college scholarships or increased comprehension that racial profiling in any guise is wrong and is a form of collective punishment. Amazing family of people.
    – — 3 Cities in Running for 2020 Olympics Have Shortcomings- – –
    – — – - The recent trend of the International Olympic Committee and FIFA, the organizer of soccer’s World Cup, has been to award the planet’s two largest sporting events to cities, countries or regions that have never hosted the global competitions.
    If that mind-set holds, Istanbul might seem to have the edge over Madrid and Tokyo on Saturday, when about 100 delegates of the Olympic committee will choose the host city for the 2020 Summer Games.
    But all three candidate cities pose risks, and it is impossible to know which will prevail in a secret ballot. It is mere guesswork to determine the favorite, a lesson that Paris starkly learned when it was widely expected to win the 2012 Summer Games and then lost to London. – — –
    – – — -Obama Nominates Voting Rights Supporter To Powerful Court — Here’s How The GOP Freakout Will Play Out- – –
    – —- -A partisan effort to keep the nation’s second most powerful court in Republican hands will flare up against next Wednesday, when the third of President Obama’s three nominees to this court faces his confirmation hearing. Yet, while next week’s confirmation hearing is likely to focus on the GOP’s effort to prevent new judges from being confirmed to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit by citing misleading statistics, they are also likely to detour into a debate over voter suppression.
    Judge Robert Wilkins is not simply a DC Circuit nominee, he is also one of three judges that prevented Texas from enforcing a voter suppression law last year, although that decision has since been superseded by the five Republican justices’ decision to render much of the Voting Rights Act toothless. Additionally, Wilkins was one of three judges that rejected a suit by the Republican National Committee that could allow billionaires to launder enormous sums of money to political candidates if the RNC eventually wins its lawsuit in the Supreme Court.
    Hola Peeps!
    I learned something interesting today. Spanish, French, Italian etc are called “Romance Languages” because our language came principally from the Romans, i.e. Latin, not because we are passionate & romantic. Who knew!
    • conlakappa
      I did, having studied three of the languages and Latin but you probably knew that! Whenever the Italians talk about irregular verbs, they blame the Romans.
      • Aquagranny911
        This is why I can read French, Italian & Portuguese (can’t necessarily speak them correctly) & understand the words. I also took Latin (required in my HS) & a semester of classical Greek. That helps me understand the roots of most words. I was never a linguist & I can’t spell for spit in any language with confidence but I do like words.
        My prior post was a bit of a joke.
