Saturday Open Thread: West Wing Week

Good morning Obots!

This week, the President welcomed the Girl Scouts, the Presidents of the Philippines and of Israel, the New York Giants, local tv anchors from around the country, and Betty White. He also kicked off the Fatherhood Buzz Campaign and visited One World Trade Center. That’s June 8th to June 14th or “The Fatherhood Buzz.”

JEEZE LOWEEZ! It’s only 9:30 PM Friday where I live and we should be dancing in your Lounge. Where the heck are you that it is already Saturday? Dang! I hate time zones. Why can’t we just be all on the same time?

Oh well, have a good Saturday. Since there is no booze, music or dancing. I guess I will go to bed ♥

LOL, I know it was only 11 when I saw this here yesterday. I was awed.

Death of Saudi Crown Prince Nayef, who led crackdown on al-Qaeda, raises questions over succession

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, the hardline former interior minister who led a crackdown on al-Qaeda, has died in Geneva.

Crown Prince Nayef, interior minister since 1975 and thought to be 78, was the heir to Saudi King Abdullah and was appointed crown prince in October after the death of his elder brother, Crown Prince Sultan. He is among the nearly 40 sons of Saudi Arabia’s founder, Abdulaziz ibn Saud, who established the kingdom in 1935.

His death unexpectedly reopens the question of succession in the kingdom, a crucial US ally and source of much of the world’s oil, for the second time in less than a year. The 88-year-old King Abdullah has now outlived two designated successors, despite ailments of his own.

The crown prince, who will be buried in Mecca on Sunday, had a reputation as a steely conservative who opposed many of the king’s reforms and developed a formidable security infrastructure that crushed al-Qaeda, but also locked up some political activists.

Defence minister Prince Salman, 76, seen as likely to continue King Abdullah’s cautious reforms, has long been viewed as the next most senior prince in the kingdom’s succession. The new crown prince will be chosen by the Allegiance Council, an assembly of Abdul-Aziz’s sons and some of his grandchildren.

    Good Morning, Everyone 🙂

ABC: President Barack Obama and his family have returned to their hometown this weekend as guests of honor at the wedding of Laura Jarrett, daughter of White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett …. the press are not allowed near the event….

…. The President, first lady, and daughters arrived in the city Friday evening and immediately proceeded to the home of Martin Nesbitt, a personal friend and resident of the neighborhood. In the downtime between get-togethers and the nuptial ceremony, they are making the rare move of staying in their actual house in the Kenwood neighborhood. Michelle Obama’s mother, Marian Robinson, is also along for the trip.

….. despite the occasional inconvenience most neighborhood inhabitants take their mostly-absent neighbor as a point of pride. On Friday traveling press in the area spotted a Chevy Camaro parked in one driveway, adorned with a sign:

“Thank you for saving GM,” it reads, a reference to the president’s decision to bailout troubled American auto manufacturers from bankruptcy in 2009.

This will be the longest stretch that the family has spent in their home since winter 2009. They will remain here through tomorrow – Father’s Day – before the president travels solo to a G-20 summit in Los Cabos, Mexico that evening.

despite the occasional inconvenience most neighborhood inhabitants take their mostly-absent neighbor as a point of pride.

Unlike Mitt’s neighbors who wish he would just go jump off a cliff.

    • Dang! No press allowed? Now we won’t get to see her daughter’s dress. 🙁

BTW, I see Michael Sneed wrote another missive yesterday about the wedding

I get the feeling that Sneed never gave a damn about crime in Chicago until now.

Irish immigrants began moving to the United States in the biggest numbers during a major famine of their home country. Since the time that they landed in United States ports, they have had to deal with segregation and various forms of discrimination, including dual labor, institutional, double jeopardy, redlining, and glass ceilings. Irish immigrants faced many difficult years when trying to migrate to the United States, but over the years the Irish people have established their substantial worth within the United States workforce.

    – — – –Seem to be quite the divine timing, eh?

PRINCETON, NJ – President Barack Obama’s decision not to deport young people who came to the U.S. illegally as children comes at a time when Americans’ views toward immigration are much more positive than they have been in recent years. Currently, 66% say immigration is a “good thing” for the U.S. today, up from 59% last year and one percentage point off the high of 67% in 2006.

The findings reflect a June 7-10 Gallup poll, conducted just days before the Obama administration put U.S. immigration back into the headlines by announcing that it would bypass Congress and stop deporting undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as children — a change that would affect hundreds of thousands of people.

Hola! I’m happy to catch you here. I laughed so hard at La Chancla. My own mother used that method on occasion with my brothers. She had a good arm & a dead aim, lol.

Thanks for the humor. I enjoyed it.

        • conlakappa

Glad you enjoyed it! Both my Brooklyn Puerto Rican online friend and my Miami Cuban real-life friend and I bonded over the experience of the thrown shoe though, honestly, I think my mother more threatened to do it than she actually did. Or maybe she was a bad shot! I saw it more of a warning but you had to give her the respect of at least flinching. The Italian immigrant mother of some friends used to just take her shoe off in the car and threaten her kids sitting in the back seat, according to them.

          • Aquagranny911

LOL, I was more of a ‘hands on mama’ My kiddos called it “La Pinza’ (the pincer) People were often impressed that when we were in public, my children stayed right by my side. That was because if they started to stray I would reach out with my thumb & forefinger and grip them by the soft fleshy part of their upper arms. I learned that one from my own Granny. It was quite effective, lol.

Miller, Louis Brandeis, Felix Frankfurter, and Warren Burger), while one justice was of Iberian descent (Benjamin N. Cardozo).”[16] Justice Antonin Scalia (appointed in 1986) and Justice Samuel Alito (appointed in 2006) are the first justices of Italian descent to be appointed to the Supreme Court. Cardozo, appointed to the Court in 1932, was the first Justice known to have non-northern European ancestry. – —

See this gets to one of my favorite discussions of who gets to be white and when did that happen? I have seen white oppression overstated [Irish “slaves” in the U.S.] and the presumption of whiteness donned like it was an heirloom family christening gown. A lot of folks who call themselves white now were not so just 100 years ago. Or even 70 years ago but you’d be hard pressed to tell them that and well-advised to wear a cup and/or running shoes while doing so. For the record, at least. I recounted that not two months ago TonTon ran into someone at a D.C. restaurant and was overheard to say, “we Italians have to stick together!” Um, really? Get over it!

Good Morning POU! I was really pissed off last night about that reporter but then I wrote a few scathing emails. I’ve now decided to focus on the positive. It was a great week with the Ron Barber win in AZ D-8 & with PBO’s actions to help not only Latino young people but immigrant children brought here from other countries as well. I think that sometimes people forget that this is a move that will benefit many more than just Latinos.

She is the ultimate Debbie Downer. I bet she wonders why she always calling up a friend and everybody over at that person house but her. They always “forget” to tell her when they getting together.

    • Miranda

His ego appears to be quite fragile.

  • Oh Snap! Sam Donaldson went there! Pardons for the HuffinPuffin link

“Never once did I interrupt a president in any way while he was making a formal statement, a speech, honoring awardees or in any other way holding the floor. Yes, almost always when he was finished in the Rose Garden or in the Briefing Room or at a photo opportunity with other world leaders I tried to question him (only rarely was it a shout on the rope line, more often a more normal tone of voice) and other reporters of course did the same thing along with me.

What this man did yesterday is something new, to me wrong and unusual. I think it is probably the result of the growing incivility of the times, the competition among reporters and news organizations to be noticed not only for the work product but for the theatrics of the gathering…and there is one more factor, let’s face it: Many on the political right believe this president ought not to be there – they oppose him not for his polices and political view but for who he is, an African American! These people and perhaps even certain news organizations (certainly the right wing talkers like Limbaugh) encourage disrespect for this president. That is both regrettable and adds, in this case, to the general dislike of the press on the part of the general public.

For Tucker Carlson to say that he would if he can give this man a raise for this rude attempt to interrupt the president is reflective of what I’ve said above and, to me, lowers my opinion of Tucker.”

    • Admiral_Komack

      Sam Donaldson is correct.

I hope Jay Carney tells Tucker Carlson, “Of course, your reporters are welcome here…after the year 2017.”

      • Aquagranny911

I hope Jay Carney tells Tucker Carlson to: BITE THE BIG CACTUS! I will be happy to provide a bib & some tooth picks.

      • Aquagranny911

        Nailed it!!!

        • nathkatun7

Thanks, Aquagranny! What is even pure irony for me was to see an Irish white immigrant, yelling and disrespecting the President of United States, while presuming to speak on behalf of Americans.

Belief in white supremacy makes people feel so entitled. This fool thinks that, because he is white, he knows and cares more about American workers than a duly elected President, who received the votes of the majority of Americans. He probably doesn’t think of himself as an immigrant in the same category as any other immigrants from non-European countries. I am sure he shares this a view, of being an entitled and special immigrant, with his white supremacist employer, Tucker Carlson, who endorsed his actions and wished that he could raise his salary.
