Company Offers Cash To Ease D.C. Residents’ Fear Of Possible Oil Trains Through Neighborhood

In an apparent attempt to ease health and safety concerns over CSX Corp.’s plan to reconstruct a freight train tunnel in Southeast D.C., the U.S. Department of Transportation on Friday said the company would offer money to the residents most harmed by the project. But residents are not taking the bait, saying the money is not worth the risks the project poses to their lives and livelihoods.[…] Though concerns over the project’s impact on air quality, vibration and noise levels have been primary concerns in the neighborhood, the possibility of derailment has arguably been the most pressing issue surrounding the proposal.[..]

The FEIS also noted CSX’s voluntary agreement with the city not to
transport the most “high-risk” explosive materials through the District. However, CSX can still transport hazmats that are not classified as high-risk, and can still transport crude oil and fuel through the city, so long as they’re in a mixed-freight car.[….] Additionally, the voluntary agreement to keep high-level hazmats out of the city is just that: voluntary. The company can back out of that agreement at any time, with no threat of punishment.[….]

Goldman Wins Dismissal of $450 Million Mortgage-Bond Suit

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. won dismissal of a suit over $450 million in residential mortgage-backed securities, with a New York judge saying that the firms that bought the bonds should have done more research beforehand.

State Supreme Court Justice Charles Ramos dismissed the claims against Goldman Sachs today, saying the investors only reviewed data presented in offering documents for the securities and never asked to review files for the underlying loans.[….]

Cop Buys Birthday Presents for Boy After Mom’s Gifts Were Stolen

A Jacksonville Sheriff’s Officer responded to a burglary call to find
a mother devastated because her son’s birthday presents were stolen
from her car. Purchased with their tax refund, she had no money to
replace the gifts. Officer Derek Pratico wrote up the police report but before moving on to the next case he showed us all what community service looks like.

The next day he went to the store and purchased with his own money a toy police car, a birthday cake and card, and a Spiderman backpack. He brought it to the boy and also handed his mother a $100 gift card to “help her get back on her feet”.[….]

Boy Bye…………I just listened to a segment on the radio where the host said at one time he was all for taking athletics out of the schools because he wanted an emphasis on education and thought the emphasis on athletics was too much. Said he had a conversation with a prominent coach in Dekalb County Georgia who told him “I have 54 boys on my team….to 40 of them, I am their father…PERIOD. To 40 boys, I make sure they stay on the right path, I am the disciplinarian in their life, I am all they have to come to as a man.

PBO doesn’t speak about his own upbringing for therapeutic reasons. He is not speaking for himself. He’s speaking for those 40 boys.

The man is dedicated to US and if folks are too silly to realize that, shame on them.

Quake safety: Garcetti OKs creating list of vulnerable apartments

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti signed off on the city’s most aggressive action on earthquake safety in nearly three decades, instructing building officials this week to comb the city and identify thousands of apartment buildings vulnerable to collapse in a major temblor.[….]

In May, Patrick Otellini, who is in charge of implementing San

Thanks To Obamacare, Minnesota’s Uninsurance Rate Has Dropped 40 Percent

The number of uninsured people in Minnesota has plunged to the lowest level in state history, following Obamacare’s six month open enrollment period that allowed people to sign up for new health plans, according to a new analysis from University of Minnesota researchers.

About 180,500 Minnesotans gained health insurance between last
September and this May. Most of those people accessed their new coverage by either signing up for Medicaid or purchasing a private plan on Obamacare’s new marketplace, the two major policies involved in the health reform law’s coverage expansion.

Now, a full 95 percent of the state population is insured.[….]

UglyGorilla Hack of U.S. Utility Exposes Cyberwar Threat

Somewhere in China, a man typed his user name, “ghost,” and password, “hijack,” and proceeded to rifle the computers of a utility in the Northeastern U.S. He plucked schematics of its pipelines. He copied security-guard patrol memos. He sought access to systems that regulate the flow of natural gas. He cruised channels where keystrokes could cut off a city’s heat, or make a pipeline explode. That didn’t appear to be his intention, and neither was economic espionage. While he was one of the Chinese officers the U.S. charged last month with infiltrating computers to steal corporate secrets, this raid was different.

The hacker called UglyGorilla invaded the utility on what was probably a scouting mission, looking for information China could use to wage war. UglyGorilla is one of many hackers the FBI has watched. Agents have recorded raids by other operatives in China and in Russia and Iran, all apparently looking for security weaknesses that could be employed to disrupt the delivery of water and electricity and impede other functions critical to the economy[…]

Um..so I got tired of Sprint, so I switched my carrier to AT&T. I ordered a phone online, but I don’t like it so I’m going to the store to return the one I don’t like and trade in my Sprint Galaxy S4 for a credit towards purchasing another phone (Sprint doesn’t have AT&T compatible SIM card, so you can’t use Sprint phones with AT&T). So I like my Galaxy S4 and I was gonna just use the trade in credit to purchase an AT&T S4. So I’m looking at AT&T online and I figured, let check out the new Ipad Air. So, yeah, I got approved for financing and can add IPad Air to my bill…so yeah, I just bought a new Ipad Air!!!! So I figured I’m gonna just go ahead and get another IPhone. Galaxy S4 is a great phone and it was fun while it lasted, but…it’s over. So now let’s see who’s reading this…what should I do with my old IPad????

‘All I could do was hug him': Grad, 18, reunites with firefighter who saved her as a baby

Last Sunday was a landmark occasion for 18-year-old Skyler James, and not just because she celebrated graduating from high school. For the first time, she also got to meet the firefighter who, on a bitterly cold November morning in 1995, found her — a newborn baby — abandoned beneath a snow-laden pine tree in an Illinois cemetery.[….] Bonnie and Greg James of Charleston, Ill., adopted Skyler five days after firefighter Charlie Heflin discovered her under that tree. The couple told Skyler the story of how she joined their family as soon as she was old enough to understand.

When Skyler was 5, Bonnie James began searching for Heflin in the phone books of nearby communities, but without any luck. As Skyler’s graduation from Charleston High School approached, her
mother resumed her search once again through social media. This time she tracked down contact information for Heflin[….] Heflin attended Skyler’s graduation ceremony on Friday, but he waited
until her party on Sunday to introduce himself and to tell all in
attendance the story of how he met her. Skyler said she didn’t know who this man was until the story started to unfold. “I was speechless,” Skyler said. “All I could do was hug him.”[….]

About 16 months after the James family adopted Skyler, another baby was abandoned – this time in Bloomington, Ill. A baby boy was brought into a hospital by people who said they found him in their car. Today that boy is Skyler’s little brother, 17-year-old Nathan.

Retail Politics: Hillary Clinton Heads to Costco, Skips Walmart on Latest Book Tour

[….] In 2005 she returned a $5,000 donation from the company’s PAC, severing most of her political ties to the company and putting an end to a long, cozy relationship that dated back to her days in Arkansas.[….] As the Village Voice noted in a 2000 article denouncing Clinton Walmart past, Clinton’s spot on the board was designed just for her: she wasn’t filling any open vacancies, and the company didn’t replace her seat when she resigned in 1992.[…]

In 2007 the New York Times reported that during her time on the board, Clinton pushed for greater representation for women in the company’s management and led an advisory group that focused on ways Walmart could improve its environmental practices. But on unionization—the primary liberal complaint against Walmart—Clinton had little to say. A 2008 ABC review of videotapes from Walmart meetings found that “Clinton remained silent as the world’s largest retailer waged a major campaign against labor unions seeking to represent store workers.”[….]

Clinton’s public comments may have turned against the Arkansas company, but the ties haven’t been completely severed.[….] And the Walmart Foundation has been a major funder of the Clinton
Foundation, donating between $1 and $5 million to the Clinton
organization through 2013. The Walmart Foundation has funded a host of “energy and climate change” awards for the Clinton Global Initiative.[….] This past April, a glowing blog post on the Clinton Foundation’s website touted Walmart—the company, not their foundation—for “efforts to empower girls and women” in a Q&A with the senior director of Federal Government Relations at Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.[….] Walmart scion Alice Walton—the 15th richest person in the world, worth $35 billion—donated the max $25,000 to Ready for Hillary in November.

California poised to fund high-speed rail and public pre-schools in new budget

California will spend $250 million on a controversial high-speed rail
project, fund preschool for low-income children and pay down debts
under a budget deal that is likely to be approved this weekend,
    lawmakers said on Friday.

The $156.4 billion proposal, approved by a conference committee but still subject to negotiation before a budget deadline on Sunday, marks a compromise with Democratic Governor Jerry Brown. The governor has demanded fiscal restraint from progressive Democrats who wanted to restore spending on social programs cut during the recession.[….]

She is so angry at the Nigerian government & their president that I fear for her blood pressure or that she will be arrested! She is Botswana woman who has spent most of her life working for the women & children of Africa.

She wrote in an email to me that the corruption in the government goes so high that we would be “astonished” if we knew. She & the women are boiling with righteous anger about how badly this has all been mishandled.

Tastes great & really good for you!

        • crazycanuck

I have never had it. Have you ever eaten artichoke? I want to know what that taste like.

          • Aquagranny911

Artichokes are okay. I consider them a pain in the ass to prepare & eat for what little you get. They are merely giant thistles. I have grown them for the pretty. The blooms, artichoke part, are really pretty but you have to pick them as buds before the flower actually opens.

You should try it some time. A lot of my Fam love them.

        • Aquagranny911

I never liked papaya even from childhood. One of Mama’s relatives would always bring us papayas as a treat when he came to visit. I always smiled & passed my share quietly to Sis who loves it!

Me too & I grow some of that. Hubby thinks we should try growing kiwis which we both love. We already have citrus, figs, guavas, blackberries & grapes. We actually managed to grow some pineapples once in pots on the patio but it was a big pain in the ass for what little fruits we got. They were small but good, however not worth the effort & water.

        • Alma98

I’ve tried to grow pineapples but it wasn’t meant to be lol. I love them, I’ve been having fresh strawberry & pineapple smoothies. T

Camden honors graduates who overcame adversity

[….] The teenagers have battled homelessness, survived cancer, lost parents and close relatives, run in gangs and had the courage to run away from them. At a young age they refused to let those circumstances define their attitudes or their futures. In Camden, dozens more students will be celebrated at backyard barbecues
and family dinners, young heroes whose stories will be cited to
challenge the city’s grave education statistics.

Camden County Freeholder Scot McCray told the group to keep it up. “You’ve heard so many people tell you you have potential,” he said, “but it means nothing unless you put it into action.” Principals and counselors from the city’s five district high schools spoke about the 24 students and presented each with a trophy and certificate.[..]

Presbyterians set to divest over Israel, Palestinians

[….] The Presbyterian General Assembly, gathering in Detroit through next week, will consider withdrawing its investments from some companies whose products are used by the Israeli government in the Palestinian territories. Divestment advocates were narrowly outmaneuvered at the last Presbyterian convention in 2012, losing a crucial ballot by just two votes. They enter this year’s fight with signs of increasing momentum, within and outside the church.[….] As of last year, the denomination had just under 1.8 million members.

Still, the denomination is historically important within the U.S. and works closely with Presbyterians worldwide, and would be the most prominent American religious group by far to support divestment. The stocks that would be targeted in the latest proposals before delegates are in Caterpillar, Hewlett-Packard and Motorola, and are collectively valued at about $21 million[….]

Hola Alex2! Have you all ever thought about making a diary about the “Bracero Program” from WWII & the subsequent “Operation Wetback” of the 1950’s? I know it is not strictly black history even though some of the braceros were black. Most were brown, Indio & even a few were white if you are just judging skin color but they all shared a common heritage & culture. Many were sadly exploited.

Some here have asked me questions about this. I could write about it in a post & share some familia stories but it would be way too long because of the need for historical background. Peeps here do great research. Anyway, it is just a suggestion for someday. I appreciate all that I learn here.
