Saturday Open Thread: West Wing Week

This week, the President visited a toy factory, hosted Kennedy Center Honorees, held the 2012 White House Tribal Nations Conference, welcomed the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, answered questions live on twitter, spoke on National Security achievements, visited a family who had written the White House, and lit the National Christmas Tree.

Rice in Limbo as Nomination Remains Uncertain
    Published: December 7, 2012

Still, in an effort to contain the damage, the White House has set up an ad hoc team to respond to the charges over Ms. Rice’s statements about the attack on an American compound in Benghazi on Sept. 11. b>It has tried to recruit prominent outsiders, like former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright, and other cabinet members, like Mrs. Clinton, to come to her defense.

On Thursday, Mrs. Clinton said Ms. Rice’s statements on five Sunday TV news shows days after the attack were “based on the information that had been given to every senior official in our administration.” She added that Ms. Rice “made it very clear in her appearances that the information was subject to change.”

Good morning POU! I haven’t posted much lately but I still read the comments every day…morning, noon and night. 🙂 Anyway, I just read at jsonline.com that our Governor’s (Scott “Dead Eyes” Walker) wife has requested almost $500,000 from the state Dept of Administration to renovate two kitchens at the Governor’s mansion. I thought the State of Wisconsin was broke?? I’ll be waiting to see if the request is approved. One of the comments indicated that the person at the DOA is a Walker appointee and this request will not have to be approved by the legislature. Then, on top of this news, I also read that this mofo went with his son to register at the polls back in the spring for the GOP primary here. Now mind you, he’s been all in the news lately bitching about getting rid of same day registration in Wisconsin because it’s an inconvenience for poll workers, etc. BUT, his family has taken advantage of same day registration. I just can’t with him anymore….

    — – –Sanders: GOP Senate obstructionism ‘undemocratic’ and ‘unAmerican’

    – – –Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) slammed Republican obstructionism in the Senate as “undemocratic” and “unAmerican” and urged filibuster reform after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) blocked his own bill earlier this week.

“In a time of disfunctionality in the Senate, and all kinds of absurdity, this probably takes the cake when you filibuster your own” bill, the self-described “democratic socialist” lawmaker told MSNBC’s Ed Schultz Friday evening “The American people want action and it is undemocratic, it is unAmerican when a small minority can deny the majority from going forward.”

Sanders made the remarks after McConnell on Thursday called for a vote on legislation giving President Obama unilateral power to increase the nation’s borrowing limit, the so-called debt ceiling. McConnell had hoped to demonstrate that Republicans and Democrats alike oppose what he described as a “power grab” by the president, but he was forced to object to a simple majority vote after Democrats agreed to move forward.

    THIS COMMENT: – — WeToldYouSo
Thank you, Senator Sanders. You’re probably the most honest, the truest American in that cesspool of Teabagging fools. ALEXANDER2 – – – -PROMISING NEWS. – – – -:>) – –

    – – – –EXCLUSIVE: Sen. Merkley Gives Progressives Reason To Be Optimistic About Filibuster Reform – –

    – — – –When Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced that he was “wrong” to oppose filibuster reform in 2011, he named two senators as “prophetic” advocates of reform, Sens. Tom Udall (D-NM) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR). These two senators will now play a key role in shaping the filibuster reform package that Senate Democrats ultimately bring to the Senate floor next month. In an exclusive interview with ThinkProgress, Sen. Merkley laid out what he believes that package will include and what he hopes to add to it. His remarks should give progressives hope.

Merkley began the interview by endorsing two reforms that it was already clear would be included in the reform package this January: eliminating the minority’s ability to filibuster the same bill more than once and requiring a senator to speak on the floor in order to maintain a filibuster. Reid already publicly endorsed both of these proposals. Yet, as ThinkProgress has explained, they are not sufficient in and of themselves to prevent widespread obstructionism.

Sen. Merkley, however, listed several other reforms he would like to include in the final package that, together with the two Reid has already endorsed, add up to something quite meaningful. Under current Senate rules, the minority can force up to 30 hours of floor time to be wasted even after a supermajority of the Senate votes to break a filibuster on a nominee. And while 30 hours may not seem like a lot, when they are multiplied across the hundreds of nominees a president must confirm, these 30 hours enables the minority to literally force the Senate to waste years of precious work time doing nothing but confirming judges and executive branch officials. These 30 hours are likely the single greatest tool an obstructionist minority possess, and Senate Republicans wielded this tool to great effect in order to block President Obama’s nominees.

Merkley called for eliminating this opportunity for obstruction completely:

“Mindful of the historic nature of this occasion, we expect the White House will continue the long tradition of opening the President’s official swearing-in to full press access, and we as an organization are looking forward to working with the administration to make that happen,” Ed Henry, the Fox News correspondent and president of the White House Correspondents Association, said in a statement.

I know Beyonce’s “stans” gon be mad, but in this case Wendy Williams is so right. Have you heard Beyonce talk in interviews? She doesn’t sound like she’s that bright. Prove me wrong Beyonce fans, find me one video where she sounds even remotely close to having a high school education!

“Wendy Williams Slams Beyonce: ‘She Sounds Like She Has a Fifth Grade Education’ | Story | Wonderwall”

    • BoomerGal

That may be true but you don’t slam your own for public ridicule. This is one of our biggest problems as a people. Crabs in a barrel.

      • lamh36

True dat. This is WW m.o. It’s how her radio show got to be so big in NYC. She’s messy as heck. If you remember she was the DJ who got called out by Whitney Houston of all people who called into Wendy’s show and told Wendy to keep her “f’n name out of her mouth” during those “Being Bobby Brown” days. Wendy was all over that for publicity and when Whitney died she was crying her eyes out on her show.

Now having said that, since we are not part of the public, I’ma just say again, I agree completely with the jist of what Wendy said. I cringe everytime I see Beyonce in an interview. It’s painful. Maybe it’s why she doesn’t do many interviews.

I’ve seen interviews with Kelly and even Michelle Williams silly azz and they are legions better than Bey. I always think that it’s good that she went from being managed by her father to basically being managed by her husband (Jay) cause I truly don’t know if homegirl had it in her to do it on her own.

      • True, that’s why Bouncy caught flack for dissing the Jackson Family in ELLE magazine:

“I grew up upper-class. Private school. My dad had a Jaguar,” she recalls. “We’re African-American and we work together as a family, so people assume we’re like the Jacksons. But I didn’t have parents using me to get out of a bad situation.”

News to anyone who has heard you speak or read your writing.

Girl, haven’t you heard about glass houses? Your parents may not have been in a “bad” situation, but they sure as hell used you to get their music mogul/design mogul grift on.

ETA – Bouncy stays trying to throw shade. Does anyone take her seriously besides her “stans”?

        • itgurl_29

And that’s why I don’t feel the least bit sorry for her. And if I see her on the street, I will literally snatch her wig. She’s got some nerve talking about the Jacksons like that. She also made a shady comment about Mariah years ago that the lambs still have not forgotten.

Beyonce’s a robot because she has to be. When she lets down her guard and talks like a real person, she reveals what a snobby egotistical witch she is.

        That explains alot.

Jon Chait’s Miserable Endorsement of Raising the Medicare Eligibility Age

By: David Dayen Friday December 7, 2012 7:04 am

Since Jon Chait has never met a concession he didn’t like, he comes out with an endorsement of raising the Medicare eligibility age as part of a long-term deficit deal. So his cover for what is universally regarded as a terrible idea surely led deficit scolds seeking to use the problem to weaken the safety net to give each other high-fives.

Let’s look at Chait’s reasoning. I would probably start with the fact that he’s not 64 or 65. My parents are, and until my dad reached Medicare in November, they were paying $2,500 a month on the private market for health insurance. So I’ll be happy to provide him with their phone number so he can tell them how it’s “tolerable” for them to spend two years more than they expected doing that.

But soft! Here are his actual reasons. One, Democrats have to accept concessions (that’s always a good strategic place from which to begin a negotiation!), and the scolds seem to like raising the eligibility age. So let’s give ‘em what they want. This is a bizarrely content-free assertion. The phrase “If Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles wanted you to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge, would you do it?” springs to mind. Second, he thinks that Republicans will somehow forget that this only raises $100 billion, at most, over 10 years, and will then drop any demands to hit a particular number in the negotiations.

Then there’s this bit of folly:

What’s more, raising the Medicare retirement age would help strengthen the fight to preserve the Affordable Care Act […] The political basis for the right’s opposition to universal health insurance has always been that the uninsured are politically disorganized and weak. But a side effect of raising the Medicare retirement age would be that a large cohort of 65- and 66-year-olds would suddenly find themselves needing the Affordable Care Act to buy their health insurance. Which is to say, Republicans attacking the Affordable Care Act would no longer be attacking the usual band of very poor or desperate people they can afford to ignore but a significant chunk of middle-class voters who have grown accustomed to the assumption that they will be able to afford health care. Strengthening the political coalition for universal coverage seems like a helpful side benefit — possibly even one conservatives come to regret, and liberals, to feel relief they accepted.

This is cynical, to say the least. It’s also completely wrong. The one thing we know will be a side effect of increasing the Medicare eligibility age is that insurance premiums will skyrocket. It will make Medicare more expensive because they lose relatively healthy 65 and 66 year-olds from their risk pool, and it will make private insurance more expensive because they add relatively sick 65 and 66 year-olds to their risk pool. Insurers hate the idea for just this reason. As a result, everyone’s premiums will rise, and cost-shifting will ensue from the government to its citizens.

People with busy lives don’t differentiate between what provisions in health care can be attributed to the Affordable Care Act and what provisions come from a fiscal deal. They’ll just know that the ACA got implemented in 2014, and as a result their insurance rates jumped. It’s maybe the worst strategic plan in the world to raise the Medicare age to bolster support for the Affordable Care Act by raising how much everyone has to spend on health insurance, particularly those who don’t get subsidies, the same “significant chunk of middle-class voters who have grown accustomed to the assumption that they will be able to afford health care.”

  • Kennymack1971

Framing the debate: Why Republicans are losing

Over at the New York Post, John Podhoretz captures the zeitgeist. A trend has emerged: Republicans spend about 90 percent of their time defending the least popular 10 percent of their policies

    A couple recent examples:

… Rather than talking about defending the right to life, Republicans spent an inordinate amount of time in 2012 talking about whether a woman who was raped should be allowed to have an abortion. (I say inordinate, not because this is a trivial issue — it’s not — but because the primary goal of most pro-lifers is to prevent the use of abortion as birth control. This is a peripheral issue for most pro-lifers.)

… Rather than talking about cutting spending — or even cutting taxes for the middle class! — Republicans spend most of their time defending the rich from tax hikes.

Democrats have brilliantly outmaneuvered Republicans into a position where they are spending the vast majority of their time defending (what seems to many like) the indefensible.

Where the press failed in 2012

Posted by Jonathan Bernstein on December 7, 2012 at 4:37 pm

Today’s must-read is Dan Froomkin’s interview with political scientists Tom Mann and Norm Ornstein about what they call the great uncovered story of 2012: “the radical right-wing, off-the-rails lurch of the Republican Party, both in terms of its agenda and its relationship to the truth.” Or, more specifically, what happened to Mann and Ornstein once they spoke about Republicans.

That is, after decades of carefully building a reputation for serious and scholarly expertise, Mann and Ornstein were basically blackballed by the press. Well, not quite; they were, instead, reclassified. They were no longer serious and scholarly neutral arbiters, but were suddenly treated by the press as Democratic shills.

And that’s the problem. Because the conventions of the press do not allow neutral observers to conclude what, to many political scientists, is an inescapable truth: There’s something seriously wrong with the Republican Party.

Note that this has nothing at all to do with policy positions. The issue isn’t that Republicans are “too” conservative, whatever that might mean. It’s that the party, and to a startling degree the conservative movement generally, has failed to develop reality-based policy proposals; has decided in many cases that compromise itself is against its principles; and has (in the case of the Romney/Ryan campaign) repeatedly violated norms about lying in campaigns.

    • JojoRaze

I completely and utterly agree with this article. I was so surprised that everyone in the MSM latched on to an uninformed, silly book that Woodward penned about PBO not “forcing his will” in the 2011 negotiations, while they ignored the Mann and Ornstein book, “Ask Not What Good We Can Do.” M&O had evidence and Republicans on the record admitting that they met the night of PBO’s inauguration to stymy him and no one discussed that, because it would supposedly show bias. No, it would show that one party doesn’t think the opposing party winning an election is legitimate, while the other party recognizes that a vote represents the majority’s will.

Immigration Reform Is Back on the Agenda

Thanks to the election, it’s now in the interests of both Democrats and Republicans to tackle the issue.

President Obama’s reelection doesn’t guarantee a breakthrough in the long stalemate over immigration reform. But it did instantly invert the debate.

Since the collapse of a bipartisan immigration-reform effort in 2007, Democrats have divided over the issue while Republicans have remained in lockstep, particularly in opposition to any plan that included a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million people in the U.S. illegally. Now it’s the reverse. Democrats are talking confidently about forcing the issue in 2013, while Republicans are fracturing. For the first time since George W. Bush’s presidency, a genuine debate over immigration is emerging within the GOP, with advocates of comprehensive reform regaining their voices at events like a potentially landmark conference this week in Washington.

Until the November election, Republican reform advocates had spent the previous six years as besieged as the survivors in The Walking Dead. In 2006, 23 Senate Republicans joined a bipartisan majority to pass legislation backed by Bush that toughened border enforcement, created a guest-worker program, and established a path to citizenship for those here illegally. But the effort died when House Republicans shelved it and Bush acquiesced.

National Review is correct that a pathway to legalization doesn’t guarantee Republicans big gains with Hispanic voters. Most Latinos prefer more government activism than Republicans are offering. And years of resisting action on immigration has left the GOP without any entirely good options. If the party blocks comprehensive reform, it risks further alienating Hispanics. If it acquiesces, it allows President Obama to sign historic legislation that could further cement their loyalty. One path leaves the GOP standing in the schoolhouse door; the other casts Obama as Lyndon Johnson, achieving a 21st-century counterpart to the Civil Rights Act.

    What happens next in Michigan
    By Laura Conaway

    Sat Dec 8, 2012 4:34 PM EST

With sudden support from Republican Governor Rick Snyder, Republicans in the Michigan legislature have been speeding through a package to severely weaken unions in that state. The pace at which the bills are moving through the lame-duck session is almost unbelievable. That it’s happening in the birthplace of the modern American labor union is almost unfathomable.

The legislature next takes up the so-called Right to Work measures, which essentially ban union shops, on Tuesday. Today opponents of Right to Work gathered at the UAW hall, picture above, for training in how to “protest peacefully and stand together” — a long tradition in Michigan labor. State officials are expecting a crowd of thousands next week at the Capitol in Lansing. Eclectablog reports that the union supporters will find that conservative groups have already reserved the Capitol steps for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, after which the chambers adjourn.

Activists are also making calls from a phone-bank against the bills at the AFL/CIO office in Lansing. Meanwhile, a judge has urged state police to keep the Capitol building open to protesters if at all possible. The closure of the building last Thursday, during the first votes, has prompted suits over the state’s Open Meetings law.

Right to Work legislation has moved through so quickly that one Republican lawmaker voter against it because, he said, “We literally weren’t given the legislation to read until minutes before voting.” From experience with Right to Work in other states, conservatives and liberals agree that the rule is catastrophic for unions, with significant cuts in membership, and lower wages and benefits. As Stephen Henderson writes in the Detroit Free Press:

  • Et tu, John Kerry? Et tu?

Rice under fire from left as Kerry’s name won’t go away
By Domenico Montanaro, NBC News Deputy Political Editor

    It’s not just Benghazi anymore.

One of the most controversial energy projects in the nation also has become a flash point in the drama surrounding who may become the next secretary of state – and it’s coming from the left instead of the right.

Back on Nov. 28, “OnEarth,” published by the Natural Resources Defense Council, dug into U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice’s financial disclosures and found that she and her husband have a stake in TransCanada, the company pushing for the Keystone XL Pipeline to be built.

NRDC officials say it’s an important issue that must be discussed during the nomination process. But the timing of the report raises questions, as it is being surfaced by an environmental activist community that has previously given support to another potential secretary of state candidate – Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry.

N.J. will not set up state-run marketplace for health insurance, Christie says
    By Salvador Rizzo/Statehouse Bureau
    on December 06, 2012 at 1:19 PM, updated December 07, 2012 at 4:32 PM

“We will comply with the ‘Affordable Care Act,’ but only in the most efficient and cost effective way for New Jersey taxpayers,” Christie wrote today, vetoing a Democratic bill that would have started an online marketplace in the state. “Until the federal government gives us all the necessary information, any other action than this would be fiscally irresponsible.”

…Officials in Washington said much of the information Christie says is missing is already out there, that he has already collected $8.7 million in grants to set up an exchange, and that 18 other states decided they knew enough to start their own marketplaces.

That group includes California, the largest state by population, and nearby states like Connecticut, Maryland and New York.

So disappointed in so called supporters of Pres. Obama on Twitter. Ezra Klein – who called the jobs report wrong by the way. He said it would be horrible….ummm….Derp much? – with his stupid unnamed sources says Pres. Obama is going to cave to the republicans, give them everything they want, and raise the Medicare eligibility age and what do some so called supporters do based on this lack of evidence, based on nothing by Pres. Obama, based on nothing by the administration? They begin freaking out and sending shouty tweets to Pres. Obama. “How dare you cave to the GOP?” “How dare you raise the Medicare eligibility age?” “What the hell was the election about?”

Time and time again so called supporters fall victim to these ridiculous postings by “journalists” aka carnival barkers. It wasn’t quite two weeks ago they were threatening hellfire and brimstone because “journalists” (*cough cough* Ed Schultz) claimed Pres. Obama was going to “cave” on making the top 2% pay higher taxes. You’d think that someone who won two elections despite all the odds, successfully got through more legislation (a lot of them historic) than countless numbers of his predecessors, would be trusted to do the right thing and not continuously have his fairness bona fides, his smarts, and his intelligence questioned.

That is a great comment but it does not matter. POU has been saying from the start that the unicorn left would act a fool they are going to go all out during this second term.

        • malletgirl02

I can’t understand the why some light skin black people think they are darker than darker black people, especially when the reason they are so light was most likely the result of a very ugly family history. For example one of their ancestor being the “mistress” of a slave master, or raped. The reason I putted mistress in quotes is because the women were slaves the whole idea of consent comes into question.

My grandmother telling me about the history of my family. The reason why some members of my family are very light and have reddish hair. She says it was because my great grand mother was what she called the “boss’s woman”. The boss was white and my great grandmother was in her teens.

Now every I look at myself in the mirror I get angry, because I know the reason why I look the way I do is due to an ugly family history. I refuse to acknowledge the white part of my linage, because how my black ancestor were treated. I know if I lived back then they would not acknowledge me, so I refuse to acknowledge them.

Hey rikyrah! yea that paper bag test is in a dark part of our history, no pun intended. I learned as a young airman that colorism is a disease that is not unique to black Americans.

I used to know a Filipino girl who I personally thought was beautiful. She was dark skin, full lips, beautiful dark hair, stunning. Yet this poor kid thought she was ugly because she was darker than her brothers and sisters. That poor girl went through quite a bit while I knew her. I just do not understand that type of insecurity because I was brought up to love my skin color, my full lips and kinky hair.

          • conlakappa

Not an American thing at all but a post-colonialism thing.

          • caribbeanobserver

Huh?! Actually neither post-colonial or American…just a body image thing!

          • conlakappa

What’s with thus huh? The body-image thing comes from exposure to otherness. How does one view dark as being bad/the absence of light? The places most known for colorism are the U.S., and the D.R. It is no coincidence.

          • 7thangel

it’s far from just a body image thing

          • angee

As a Caribbean person, methinks you heard wrong, especially with all the mixed up pot-pourri in these islands. But, people will be people, hey. People buy blotching creams, have tattoos. bleaching creams to tone complexions, etc. It really is just a part of the whole body image psyche, not a dominant factor of people’s lives, okay?

          • Aquagranny911

Sadly this happens among Latinos too. This is not so much with the younger ones but more so with some elders who count lighter skin as “better” than darker skin.

Girl, my TV is overrun with black people in the commercials–and not just on TVOne. I’m watching ABC, black lady in the Best Buy commercial buying all the electronics after the white clerk tells her about the deals–and she’s putting him to work, too, to carry all that she’s going to buy. I’m watching CNN and the new Swiffer Wet Jet commercial with the black mom asking her kids, and getting the side-eye, if “she’s Mom-trocious of Mom-tacular”; the Rice Krispies treats commercial with the black Mom and grandma teaching the two little boys how to make Rice Krispies treats and the littlest son saying “teets” instead of treats. The Kay Jewels commercial with the black guy proposing to his girlfriend in the Kay Jewels store.

I’m glad…and sort of annoyed. I don’t know what to do with myself at seeing black people in non-coontastic ways on TV. I’ve been used to us being dogged out in the media for so long, I can’t believe it when there are positive portrayals. LOL! All I can say is “Thank God for Barack and Michelle.”

    – – —Dallas Cowboy’s DUI arrest in death of teammate– —

    – —-Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent has been arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter stemming from a late night crash that resulted in the death of a teammate.

CBS Station KTVT reports that Jerry Brown Jr., a 25-year old currently on the Cowboys’ practice roster, was killed in the accident.

Irving police spokesman John Argumaniz said the accident happened about 2:20 a.m. Saturday in the Dallas suburb, hours before Brent was to be on a team flight to Cincinnati for the Cowboys’ game Sunday against the Bengals.

When police arrived, Brent was responsive and able to speak with officers. Brown was unresponsive and was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Officers conducted a field sobriety test on Brent and arrested him on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, Argumaniz said. The charge, a second-degree felony punishable by two to 20 years in prison, was upgraded after Brown was pronounced dead.

President Obama said he would sign the UN Disability Treaty but the Republicans blocked it, so it’s a broken Obama promise on the “Obamameter”. – – -[BWAHAHA! — UN-FLIPPIN’ –BELIEVABLE!! ]

    Here’s the “broken promise”:

“As president, Barack Obama will renew America’s leadership by making the United States a signatory to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; the first human rights treaty approved by the UN in the 21st century and a vital foundation for respecting the rights of people with disabilities worldwide He will urge the U.S. Senate to ratify the Convention expeditiously.”

Never mind that former President Bush negotiated the Disability treaty, Republicans voted no on it because you know, there’s nothing they won’t vote no on in order to make Obama look bad, even when voting yes is clearly the only morally right thing to do. The Treaty basically says you can’t discriminate against the disabled and that the disabled are entitled to the same freedoms as other citizens. This shouldn’t be too difficult, especially for a Party that allegedly supports our troops, many of whom return from war disabled.

No matter, the Republicans blithely walked by 89 year old former Senator Bob Dole in his wheelchair and still voted no.

    – – – -SNIP – –

    – – –Given the historical obstruction of the Republican Party under President Obama, PolitiFact should consider creating a new section: Promises kept but blocked by Republicans. That would be a real public service and provide needed education about how our government is actually operating.

After all, calling this a promise broken is quite simply daft. It serves to aid and abet obstructionism rather than keep a true record of the facts, and makes PolitiFact look a bit of the willing tool of the Republican Party’s games.

    I’m back for a completely frivolous post…

DIL took me to this art fair & promised me lunch after but I got cheated! Several people there had great homemade goodies with samples so we stuffed ourselves too full plus we were snacking on this bag of fabulous granola I bought as we wandered around so we only had room for a coffee to top it off, lol.

We found this charming young woman with home made soap that was so luscious I wanted to roll in it like a cat in a bed of catnip. AZ cold pressed olive oil & other natural ingredients…the Cococafe & the Pineapple soaps had me whimpering to take a bite of them…the Lavender Desert Rose had me blissed out…

DIL & I bought 12 bars between us for gifts & one for ourselves. At $3.50 a bar it was a bargain! I asked her if she had a website but she is just getting started & said she only does local shows & can’t really keep up with much more. I told her she needs to double the price. Dang! I would have paid 3 times the price for a bar of the Pineapple soap & that Lavender Desert Rose!

    • crazycanuck

Sounds great AG, wish she had a website, because I’m racking my brain of what to get family this Christmas, and I’m running out of time.

      • Aquagranny911

If she had a website I would so have shared it here. I told her she needs to raise her prices & get a website. She told me that she is using an old family soap making recipe with more modern ingredients for the fats etc plus lots of natural fruits & botanicals for the scents. I found this real interesting because my Granny used to make soap but nothing like this!

    – – – –Exhibit to explore history of African-Americans in medicine during Civil War – –

    — —Some may not know how much of a part African-Americans played in the Civil War, but the National Library of Medicine has produced an exhibit to shed light on their work in the health field during that time.

“Binding Wounds, Pushing Boundaries” explores black Americans’ contributions as nurses, surgeons and hospital staff during the war.

According to the National Library of Medicine, for African-Americans, the Civil War was “a fight for freedom and a chance for full participation in American society.”

“Their participation challenged the prescribed notions of both race and gender and pushed the boundaries of the role of blacks in America,” the site reads.

The traveling exhibit will stop first at the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, a fitting start, considering that one of the exhibit’s main focuses is New Bedford native William P. Powell. Powell, who served as a contract Union surgeon during the war.

Starks was convicted in 1986 of assaulting a 68-year-old woman and served 20 years of a 60-year sentence when DNA evidence was retrieved that excluded him from the crime. An appeals court ordered a new trial in 2006, and Starks was released on bond.

“When I first found out about DNA it was like in the early 90s, so I was like, I was upbeat that whole time. I knew at some time that I would definitely clear my name,” he told reporters Friday at a press event with his legal team.

Lake County State’s Attorney Mike Waller had previously threatened to retry Starks on the charges but dismissed the sexual assault counts.

“He used junk science like bite mark evidence. They contorted the evidence any way they could to try desperately to cling to a conviction, even though it was wrong,” said defense attorney Jed Stone of Waller.
