Saturday Open Thread: Yes, Megyn Kelly….Santa Claus Was A Black Man

GOOD MORNING P.O.U.! We hope you’re enjoying your weekend!

blacksanta

I know. I know. Santa Claus isn’t real. But a recent comment by POUer Annvic, in response to Megyn Kelly’s proclamation that Santa Claus is white,  said something VERY interesting:

Oh, the arrogance of ignorant white people. Saint Nicholas (the man, the myth of Santa Claus was built on) *was* a black man and was always described and depicted as a black man in ancient religious artwork.

I wanted to learn more, so I got my Google on and found this Dec. 2002 article from The Turkish Times:

Santa Claus: How a Bearded Black Bishop Born in Turkey Became America’s Favorite White Saint

Linda Ann Loschiavo, Special to The Turkish Times – His beard and reputation are world famous. Miracles ascribed to him are legendary. Youngsters ponder his whereabouts and travel agenda, especially in December, knowing he’s not afraid to fly and he’s never run out of money.

Born to wealthy parents in Patara, Turkey, when the population of Anatolia was mostly pagan, it’s said he took a special interest in three sisters. Too poor to have dowries, they were being forced into prostitution when, suddenly, three bags of gold were thrown down their chimneys, enough bait to attract husbands. The trio did not leave thank you notes behind, for the record, but anyone with a bulging sack of benevolence is bound to be popular. Faith and hope, St. Paul wrote to the Corinthians, are outweighed: “The greatest of these is charity.”

Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myrrh

Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myrrh

Love for others is what always drove him, this Turk named Nicholas, which means “people’s victory.”

Devoted to good works, Saint Nicholas [270-310] was once Bishop of Myra (“Myrrh”), a town now called Demre. Anatolia, the territory of modern Turkey, has been the heartland of human civilization since 7,000 BC.

Patara, to the west of Demre, had been visited by St. Paul and St. Luke in 55 AD on their way from Miletus to Jerusalem; perhaps from this early date, a Christian community was established at this major Roman Lycian port. Demre, a vital port on a dangerous part of the Turkish coastline, became part of the pilgrimage route from Venice and Constantinople to the Holy Land [Palestine].

This helped spread the cult of the saint, especially for seafarers who once worshipped the pagan god Poseidon.

In 392, the Edict of Theodosius ruled that Christianity would be the state religion of the Empire. Large scale destruction of classical statues and temples began, and locals constructed houses of worship like the much restored church of St. Nicholas at Myra (Demre), whose foundations date back to the late 4th-5th centuries. Rocked by a religious seesaw, this church was enlarged by the Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, then destroyed in an Arab-Muslim raid in 1034, but rebuilt by Constantine IX in 1043.

During the Crusades, Catholic merchants sailed to Muslim countries to acquire relics for their own parishes. In May of 1087, several well-financed Italian groups were bidding on the bones of St. Nicholas when a boatload of Barese businessmen stole the remains and rowed them back to Apulia. The pugliese, about to lose to the wealthier Venetians, knew they would have a major tourist attraction if they grabbed San Nicola.

          • isonprize

            you gotta read my friend JD’s take on “affluenza”

            ~~~~~ Okaayyy, I’m feelin’ some kinda way about this “AFFLUENZA” defense. I mean, I think I’m starting to like it … and its underprivileged counter-part, “HIGH HOOD PRESSURE”. Don’t worry, I know it’s legally legit because I just made it up.
            For all the wrong I’ve done (even from a very young age), my defense should well have been “HIGH HOOD PRESSURE”. Caught ‘urinating in public’ in an alley on the way home from school – “HIGH HOOD PRESSURE”.
            Caught smoking behind the church in 7th grade (I didn’t even like smoking back then, but…) – “HIGH HOOD PRESSURE”.
            ‘Drinking While Ditching School’ in the 11th grade – “HIGH HOOD PRESSURE”. Cheating on my girlfriend, Slinging that Stuff, Assault & Battery, and that Armed Robbery (that really wasn’t even ME) – “HIGH HOOD PRESSURE”.
            From the time a child of a ‘lower economic upbringing’ is let outside without parental supervision he/she is increasingly exposed to this insidious and deadly disease. Because of inadequate educational institutions and even less adequate medical facilities, my condition was never recognized until I just m̶a̶d̶e̶ ̶i̶t̶ ̶u̶p̶ diagnosed myself this morning.
            In just the last 2 hours I’ve diagnosed as many as 7 children and over a dozen teenagers and adults with this recently recognized epidemic. Yet, more research needs to be done. Contact me for more information on how you can help ‘fight the rise’ and ‘stem the spread’ of this nations 2nd leading cause of premature stress (in some cases) – “HIGH HOOD PRESSURE”.
            Help me get this word out before it’s too late. FAR TOO MANY HAVE SUFFERED FOR FAR TOO LONG!!!
    Why It’s OK to Ignore Phil Robertson’s Racism
    Surely there’s room to focus on the new Civil Rights revolution, for which the first one laid foundations
    By John McWhorterDec. 20, 2013
    Amidst the current uproar over “Duck Dynasty” patriarch Phil Robertson’s take on homosexuality, we have heard rather little about the other wing of his social commentary, the part about how good things were for black people living under Jim Crow in Louisiana. And in 2013 that’s just fine.
    To be sure, Roberts would be out of place as a social science teacher on either subject. He considers homosexuality a “bestiality” that sins against God, and enough so to justify a detour into anatomical topics that casts gay men in a rather somber light. Meanwhile, he warmly compares black laborers he knew growing up to “white trash” like him, remembering them as working for farmers “singing and happy,” more inclined to do so “pre-entitlement, pre-welfare.”
    Splendid. But the gay part is more important than the black part this time.
    • morphus
      In what I perceive as a problem for the AA community in the future, the new Civil Rights revolution takes on many forms. From the NRA claiming it is the oldest civil rights organization to Texas history curriculum claiming George Wallace was a civil rights leader to the latest comparison of Phil Robertson to Rosa Parks.
    • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia
      For the 50-leventh time: The gay rights movement is NOT the “New Civil Rights Movement”. In fact, there is no “New Civil Rights Movement” because we’re still fighting some of the same issues we fought back then, like voting rights and economic inequality. But McWhorter ignores that, choosing to mischaracterize the Civil Rights Movement as simply a fight to keep white folks from calling us bad names in public.
    • Kennymack1971
      Crap like this is why White folks feel comfortable cannibalizing our civil rights icons. Too many Blacks with media access co-sign this mess on some go along to get along BS. John McWhorter needs to be cussed out for that foolishness.
      • conlakappa
        IIRC, like Juan Williams, he’s got issues with women. How about you work out your own stuff, McWhorter, before you act as Self-Designated Spokesnegro, kthxbai.
    • trose1
      This is why Black people shrug at nigger polls on TMZ. I had someone tell me on twitter that I should ignore the nigger poll. It was not a big deal. I think that person was Black.
      I think someone on this website noted A&E ignored making statements about the racism. As far as I know NAACP has not said anything about being ignored by A&E.
      Black people ignore ignore ignore.
      We are in a world of trouble.
      • MonieTalks
        A&E restarted production on Dog the Bounty Hunter’s show 3 months after he went on his n-gga rant.
        They are just waiting for the smoke to clear……besides Phil Robertson ain’t Black so GLAAD will readily accept an apology from him…… they’ll likely give him an award in the future. You already see the Log Cabin Republicans are begging for a lovefest with him.
      • conlakappa
        Colbert is the only person I’ve heard actually talk about the black part. It was brief and surgical. He’s a white man from SC checking a white man from Louisiana who’s about 15 years older on his BS.
        • 7thangel
          i think someone mentioned that they were talking about it on o’donnel’s show w/joy-ann ried
          • conlakappa
            Thanks. I meant more in a newsreading format, rather than an opinion-panel piece. When the networks talked about Daddy Dynasty, it was all gay all the time.
    • jds09
      Several years ago I was attending a group dynamics conference in London and was watching the local news. BBC did a story on the caste system in India. It was interesting for a variety of reasons, for example they didn’t ignore the connection of poverty and colonialism, but the most important thing for me was an interview with one of the caste members.
      This was the lowest rung who were organizing and this man said “if the blacks in America could do it, we can too.” I started to cry. White people and our sell-outs can try and diminish our achievements as much as they want, but a larger audience gets it. The Civil Rights Movement was a gift to the world.
    • gn
      This has ALWAYS been the objective. Had nothing to do with coalition politics, and we’re all in this together—bullshit. It was ALWAYS about colonizing civil rights and making sure that it benefits majority white groups while rendering black people completely fucking invisible. That was the entire point, and mission accomplished via the weak voices and self-haters so eager for approval and so lacking in self-respect that they couldn’t even hold onto a legacy which our ancestors died and suffered for. I’m going to need to log off lol…not at Christmas-time…not here for it…(I am almost having a stroke!).
      • conlakappa
        Hadn’t it already gotten there with white women being the biggest benefactors of EEO?
    • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45
      Ain’t it always. Now as Faulkner showed there was a lot of integration in that segregation and truth to tell maybe Robertson didn’t see any of it or more specifically want to. What he did goes back a long way in Southern culture. The romanticizing of how wonderful things were and everyone got along. Just check out the first part of Birth of A Nation for a great example.
      But Robertson never figured out that Black People were playing a game of survival. They aren’t going to tell Robertson what’s on their mind. So he can do what? Run back and tell somebody and the next thing you know whoever complained has a potentially violent problem on their hands.
      Black People aren’t going to share that; which is why the Civil Rights Movement caught Robertson and the rest of the white South by surprise. We wear the mask.
      • creolechild
        I agree with most of what you said except for the part about not seeing integration in segregation. How could he not, unless the family lives deep in a bayou swamp somewhere. He saw it alright because truth be told the South started electing blacks to public office long before other parts of the country.
        Lynchings in the deep South and families having to leave in the dead of night belies the notion that everyone just got along. Black people did what they had to do to survive. Point. blank. period! He’s attempting to whitewash the atrocities that occurred but it’s not going to happen. History proves otherwise and we’re here to reinforce it.
        • gn
          Black people did what they had to do to survive. Point. blank. period! He’s attempting to whitewash the atrocities that occurred but it’s not going to happen.
          Preach.
        • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45
          You are right which is why I added that part about specifically not wanting to see it.
          Now you can be back in some parts and maybe just maybe not run into any of that but the chances were highly unlikely. Robertson tipped his hand when he launched into his current state of Black America tirade. That imo means he’s lamenting the old days of good old fashion domestic terrorism.
          • conlakappa
            Unless he never went into town and/or is/was illiterate, he saw “whites only” signs.
      • malletgirl02
        Have ever read the book “Invisible Man” by Ralph Ellison? The main character is a black man trying to make it during Jim Crow. In the book the main character talks about that he learn while his father is on his death bed that the smile his father always had on in the presence of white people was actually fake. The father actually hated white people due to how they treated him and his fellow black people. The smile was an act of survival.
        • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45
          Bingo. Black people can tell you horror stories of Black people down South who only mildly complained or there was some trivial misunderstanding. Why on earth would they tell somebody like Robertson how they feel? If push came to shove he would have run to the big house and told Mr Charlie everything including the person’s shoe size.
          That generation of whites still don’t realize that generation of Blacks have long memories.
    • AxelFoley
      Oh, he gon’ learn.
    • malletgirl02
      Well Zippy fucking do da. He needs to learn that Uncle Remus of Song of the South was a fictional character, and black people are not going to stand for that crap any more.
    • conlakappa
      The first one laid the foundation? Nice. It wasn’t a prop. It wasn’t a platform. It was a mechanism for American citizens to be afforded their basic human rights. Ugh. Next. My husband got into a brief Facebook foray with someone doing the usual bigot’s defense of “free speech.” Next.
  • TresL
    It seems white folk are just letting their racism freak flag fly. I suspect this is how many of them have always felt but did not dare vocalize publicly because not that long ago we were a country that did not tolerate overt and public displays of racism. Fox and right-wing radio changed all of that. Now, with a black president, a racist opposition and media, I guess everyone wants to get in on the fun.
    • jds09
      I agree and I’d add that things have shifted under their feet and they’re trying to adjust.
      The black president has strengthened the social safety net WITHOUT giving them their historical head start. Social security was accompanied by legislation that locked black folks out, ACA is radical in that regard, with the special treat of being a republican idea. (That still brings a special smile to my face.) The playing field is still lopsided, but it has been evened a bit by ACA, Consumer Protection Agency and Crack/Powder cocaine sentencing. Under the smooth exteriors of POTUS and FLOTUS are some hard-core bad-asses.
      One of the tools some white folks have left is threats, intimidation and a simple belief that they are better than us. But alas, black twitter as the tools to battle them on this front as well.
    • MonieTalks
      My grandma told me in 2008 that white folks would lose their mind.
      She had one of those “we can all rejoice” attitudes at his election but she specifically stated…”It is the end of the world..end of white folks world.” Just straight like that.
      Look at how “redneck television” has surged while the hatred of so-called uppity blackness has grown. These folks will herald standing against positive messages like education, diversity, empowerment, non-violence, building up American industries like the auto industry, hell even healthy living if it means disagreeing with those black folks who think they know everything.
      At one point in time, white folks admonished certain populations for not going to the nation’s top heralded institutions. They link to study after study how they were genetically superior in terms of intelligence. But as soon as you get a black President (and his wife) who not only went to Ivy League institutions but broke milestones there…then they want to dismiss it all. Uh huh.
      Now this bobblehead Saccochick talks about going to Africa and getting AIDS …… she’ll catch it from all the blood diamonds her family has madefor generations in the mining business..pillaging S. African resources for their own selfish fortunes.
    • gn
      There’s a very significant racial backlash going on, made worse because so many people deny that it’s even happening. We’re living in crazy times, and IMO black people are catching hell from all sides.
      • AxelFoley
        But we’ll come out on top, as we always do. They’ve been playing this game since we got to this land, but we’ve survived.
        White supremacy is in its death throes. And it’s not a pretty sight.
    U.S. District Judge Amy Jackson in Washington yesterday
    Study: More Voter Suppression Laws Are Proposed When More Racial Minorities Vote
    [....] States where more minorities turn out to vote are more likely to pass vote-suppressing laws, according to an analysis published by the American Political Science Association last week.[....] The study, conducted by University of Massachusetts Boston professors Keith Bentele and Erin O’Brien, examined restrictive voting laws proposed between 2006 and 2011.
    That included voter ID laws, proof of citizenship requirements, voter registration limits, early voting and absentee voting restrictions, and restrictions on felons’ voting rights. They found that “the more that minorities and lower-income individuals in a state voted, the more likely such restrictions were to be proposed.”[....]
    FDA to revise sweeping food safety overhaul
    [...] The FSMA reflects the biggest food safety update in 70 years, and the FDA has argued that the statutory deadline was unrealistic, given the sea change in policy required. The law involves replacing a decades-old system designed to respond to illness outbreaks with one set up to prevent them through new regulations at food production plants, warehouses and farms.
    Michael Taylor, the FDA’s first ever deputy commissioner for foods, said significant revisions are needed to ensure the new system is practical to implement and provides enough flexibility to the produce industry.[...] A federal judge in June ordered the agency to complete all final regulations under FSMA by mid-2015.
    Provisions requiring a new approach include rules governing water
    quality and testing, standards for using raw manure and compost and
    certain regulations affecting mixed-use facilities. The FDA will also revisit language involving the exemption of certain farms from the regulations.
    Teen Spends More Than $500 Buying Gifts For Homeless
    A Minnesota high school senior is a picture of the holiday season of
    giving, donating her entire paycheck to buy Christmas gifts for more
    than 50 homeless at the local shelter. Jessica Peterson, 17, doesn’t earn much working at Taco Bell, but she wanted to do something
    special for those less fortunate.
    She spent more than $500 to purchase pants, socks and snacks for 58 people at the Stepping Stone homeless shelter in Anoka County.
    Peterson and her family will deliver the gifts in person on Christmas Eve.[....]
    Living Illustrations of Love: Red Hook Couple Launches Affordable Art Gallery for First-Time Buyers
    When Kamau Ware sold a painting titled “Headphone Masterpiece” at his Pittsburgh, Pa., gallery, he didn’t know he was selling it to his
    future wife. Lesley Ware bought the almost $1,000-painting, her first piece of original art, soon after she moved to the city and decided to check out a gallery near her new home. “Art just makes these kind of things happens,” said Kamau Ware, a Red Hook photographer whose wife runs an eco-friendly fashion camp for children.
    Nine years later, and now in Brooklyn, the couple has launched their own gallery with a focus on affordable art for first-time buyers. Warehouse Gallery & Studio, co-located with a vintage boutique in
    Bedford-Stuyvesant, opened last month with a range in selection and cost, which Ware hopes will appeal to newcomers and long-time residents. “Nothing in the gallery sells for more than $500,” he said.
    The gallery holds reproductions and originals, which can also be replicated onto different paper options at varying prices.[....]
        That’s her gimmick, Pauline Pureheart, the imperiled vision of white womanhood. I believe the Bush team picked her to be WH Press Secretary at the height of their foolishness to blunt the media attacks. When she held Carney’s position she projected the frail pampered yet resolute Miss Ann, with a hint of stupidity that allowed her to repeat the GOP talking points incessantly. She used to wear folks down in those press conferences.
    The surprising physics of the emperor penguin huddle
    When male emperor penguins face the minus-58-degrees-Fahrenheit (minus 50 degrees Celsius), 120-mph (200 km/h) winds of Antarctic winters, the birds rely on their neighbors’ bodies to keep themselves — and the eggs that they protect in a pouch near their feet — alive and warm. Maintaining a massive huddle of thousands of penguins may sound fairly simple, but sticking together in a pack so large turns out to be quite complicated.
    When one penguin moves a single step, the rest must also move to accommodate the open space and stay warm.[....] The team’s mathematical models showed that the huddles behave as waves instigated by any individual in the pack, no matter that individual’s location. If two waves travel toward each other, they merge, rather than passing one another. Gaps just 2 centimeters wide (0.8 inches) appear to instigate a reorganization, in order for the penguins to stay warm[Video: Watch Massive Emperor Penguin Huddle Shuffle as a Wave]
      I have more respect for that minority of racists who cop to their attitudes and don’t even pretend to be anything but what they are: reactionary bigots scared to the core that white privilege will go away. Much less respect for the cowards and weasels who insist that clear racist acts aren’t racist and who are too weak to own up to their own behavior. Punk.
    Interesting that A&E was aware of their views but went ahead with the show any way. Well, I guess typical would be a better word to use. And what the cluck? They sing?!! “Duck the Halls” Oh Hail No! Better yet, has anyone called for a boycott of their “products?”
    ‘Duck Dynasty’: A&E warned Phil Robertson about speaking out too much
    [....] Wal-Mart shelves are stocked high with “Duck Dynasty” merchandise that A&E arranged through lucrative licensing deals worth $400 million this year alone, according to Forbes (the family, which earns at least $200,000 per episode for appearing in the show, takes a cut too). “Duck the Halls,” their new holiday record with guest shots from Alison Krauss and Luke Bryan, is put out by Universal Music Group. And of course, A&E is a 50-50 partnership between Hearst Corp. and Disney.[....]
    3 Young Wonders Changing the World
    Think kids today are spoiled? That they only care about themselves? CNN Hero Yash Gupta says that’s far from the truth. “I think there’s a misconception with our generation,” said Gupta, 17. “Many of my friends are doing things to improve their communities.
    “Kids are passionate and can make a difference. It’s just a matter of finding out what you care about and focusing on that.” For Gupta, it’s helping children see clearer. Since 2011, he has given out more than 9,500 pairs of donated eyeglasses through his nonprofit, Sight
    It’s a good start, Rahm, but don’t stop at tamping down the dust, get rid of all of it….
    Chicago cracks down on piles of tar-sands waste
    Riverfront shipping terminals in Chicago will soon be forced to be just a little bit neighborly. Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) announced on Thursday that the city will require piles of petcoke, coal, and other fossil fuel-related nasties to be stored indoors or under covers. That would mean an end to the open outdoor piles that currently send filthy particles billowing over surrounding homes. From a press release put out by the mayor’s office[....]
    Elected officials and regulators eventually took notice of the anger and frustration. Since October, KCBX and Beemsterboer Slag Co., owner of a third riverfront storage terminal, have faced an onslaught of legal and political pressure to tamp down the dust.[....]
    Good morning, POU Fam!
    I hope all is well. Got a couple of things to say:
    1) I got my LIFE from that dragging of Justine Sacco. Checked out her bio on LinkedIn… she was promoted to Senior Director of Communications for IAC in July. So Imma need for the attention to be focused on IAC and Barry Diller (check out his senior staff and board of directors) because Miss Ann flourished in professional white privilege. IAC ain’t slick… they don’t want that lens on them.
    2) And guess whose daughter sits on the board? Um hmm, Billary’s. I wish somebody WOULD talk some shit to me about her candidacy in 2016…
    3) Sacco’s daddy beccame a billionaire off of blood diamonds during apartheid. Karma, clean-up in aisle South Africa…
    4) These media folks wanna come for Black Twitter… but they scurred. It’s so simple folks… Golden Rule. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Or, if you wanna get down like that, the Black Golden Rule: don’t start none, won’t be none.
    Later.
    • Alma98
      Morning sagi!
      I wish I could like your comment 1000 times.
    • Alma98
  • Aquagranny911
    Peeps I realize that my Fam lives to provide comedic relief for the world but I have to tell this anyway.
    Background: When Daughter #3 was in her recovery this Spring. Her Hubby bought her 4 chickens to help cheer her up. He built a cute little coop for them kind of like an over large dog house inside a fenced run. The chickens mostly roam the yard in the day time but they roost in there at night. They are laying eggs daily & the Grandkiddos love them.
    Yesterday afternoon, Daughter looked out the window & saw the chicken house on fire. Wholesale panic & the loco ensued. Her Father-in-law tried to put the fire out with buckets of water from the hot tub, the children were running around trying to rescue the chickens. Neighbors called the fire department who arrived along with the police.
    FIL kept trying to help the firefighters & the police tried to hold him back. In the panic all his English deserted him & he is yelling in Setswana. Gracias a Dios they did not taze or shoot him! The children brought two of the chickens inside the house which sent the dog into a frenzy. Two chickens, two children & a dog were off & running through the house with police & FIL trying to stop them.
    SIL arrives home in the midst of all this & yells out the Setswana version of “WTF is going on, disturbing the peace of my casa?” The cops respond with: “Who the fig are you?” Daughter swears one was getting ready to pull his gun to shoot the chickens. I hope she was joking!
    Everything got all sorted out but it was total chaos for a while. When she was telling me all this last night I laughed so hard I had tears running. She told me: “That’s not funny! The dog threw up, one of the chickens shit on the couch & now they are roosting in the garage for the night. I’m afraid the county will send us a bill.”
    I told to her to take a hot bubble bath & relax. In a few months this will be one of the high points of the year!
