Sunday Afternoon Thread: A Modern Day Land Grab – Sapelo Island

This is just land theft, pure and simple.

SAPELO ISLAND, Georgia (CNN) — It’s a culture struggling to survive. Fewer than 50 people — all descendants of slaves — fear they may soon be taxed out of the property their families have owned since the days of slavery.

They are the Gullah-Geechee people of Sapelo Island off Georgia’s coast, near Savannah. This small, simple community is finding itself embroiled in a feud with local officials over a sudden, huge increase in property assessments that are raising property taxes as much as 600% for some.

Many say the increase could force them to sell their ancestral properties.

“That’s part of the American history. That’s part of what built this country,” said Charles Hall, 79, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel who was born under a midwife’s care in the same home he lives in today.

“Sapelo being the only intact Gullah-Geechee community in the country that’s left, that is a part of history. It will be a shame not to preserve” it, he told CNN.

McIntosh County’s decision to reappraise homes on the island sparked the problem.

County Attorney Adam Poppell told CNN that the Gullah-Geechee culture is invaluable, but the properties had been historically undervalued due to errors in previous property appraisals.

“We have to follow the law, and assess at fair market value,” he told CNN.

To fix the problem, he said, “the state has to create a special exemption for cultural communities.”

Sapelo Island, about the size of Manhattan, is a short 20-minute boat ride from Georgia’s coast. But in some ways, it seems much farther.

The bumpy, unpaved dirt roads are a constant reminder that this is an island with few services. There are no police officers, fire rescue personnel, doctors or hospitals. There is no school or post office. People drive their garbage to a single garbage compactor. There are no grocery stores. The gas station is open only on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Ninety-seven percent of the island is owned by the state of Georgia. Residents live on a small section known as Hog Hammock.

A ferry makes three round trips each day, with the last departure from the mainland at 5:30 p.m.

Residents can’t miss that ferry if they want to work or go to school on the mainland. They complain this limits their employment opportunities and prohibits their children from participating in after-school activities.

Many have fled the island over the years because opportunity just doesn’t exist there.

Cornelia Bailey has been one of the loudest defenders of the island where she was born and raised.

She’s the ninth generation of her family to live on the island, whose slave roots are traced back to Angola. She said the taxes on her one acre property have gone from $600 a year to about $2,300.

“All these years of getting nothing, then all of a sudden, they want to lay this tax on your back and still not give you nothing,” she said.

“For the last three years, we’ve been paying $128 a year for garbage collection. I don’t even have my green garbage can. Where’s my can?”

She added, with a hint of anger in her voice, “You can call 911, but nobody gonna squeal up to your front door, so forget it.”

Homeowners are hiring lawyers now to have their displeasure heard in state and federal court.

Reed Colfax — a partner at Relman, Dane & Colfax, one of the leading housing discrimination litigation firms in the country — is heading full speed into court to have the tax bills struck down for at least half the residents of the island.

“The solution is that we freeze the tax assessments, we get the services to this island, so the people can live here,” he said. “Families can move back in, have children here, have jobs on the mainland, or even develop their own economy here on the island.”

Tax Assessors Board Chairman James Larkin suggests the Sapelo residents brought this issue on themselves, as some began to sell their property to developers and non-islanders who built bigger, upscale vacation homes, causing valuations to increase, and along with them their property taxes.

“If they hadn’t started selling their property, there wouldn’t be a problem,” he told CNN.

But Reginald Hall isn’t buying that argument. He and his family own three properties on more than seven acres of property on the island.

The assessed “fair market value” of their property went from $176,075 in 2011 to $910,333 in 2012. That brought on increase of more than 500% in property taxes. He is refusing to pay the taxes and he refuses to sell his family land, which he says is worth over $3 million.

“Once you leave, you are separated from more family members … which is a real interruption in the generational teachings on this island of the culture,” he said.

“We leave, and we’re gone. Can’t come back, because if we try to come back after we sell, you can’t afford to buy,” he told CNN.

Cornelia Bailey said her land may be worth about $384,000, but in reality it is priceless.

“I told one guy it was priceless, and he said everything has a price, and I said, you don’t know me, this is priceless.

You don’t have enough money to buy it, so forget it,” she said.

“We have a legacy that most people would die to have. We’re fighting to keep it even for the unborn.”

When did white trash become normal?
    By Charlotte Hays

Society crumbles when it takes cues from the underclass

When Snooki, whose talents include getting sloppy drunk and throwing up on camera, made Barbara Walters’ “Ten Most Fascinating People” list a few years back, one could only ask: Was Octomom not available?

Last year, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” which features a cornucopia of social ills, was TLC’s highest-rated show, attracting more cable viewers than the Republican National Convention, which had the misfortune to share the time slot with the charmers from Georgia. The show’s matriarch, June Shannon, has four daughters by four men, one of whose names she can’t recall.

White Trash is the new normal — and you don’t have to tune in to reality TV to rub elbows with pathologies that once stayed put in Skunk Hollow. White Trash Normal has invaded every nook and cranny of life, from table manners, to dress, to money management.

    • sagittarius

When did white trash become normal?

When that Islamo-Muslim-fascist-communist-socialist-Kenyan took possession of the White House not once, but twice. Gotta let the white trash know that there is a place for them in Amurikka – even if it is for others to point and laugh derisively at them.

      • Miranda

LOL….the blue blood WASPs are appalled at the state of society….what happened to the good ole days when decent robber baron families like the Vanderbilts, Dukes, Astors and Rockefellers ran everything? Its all gone to hell….LMAO

    • jds09

The little bit of Honey Boo Boo that I’ve watched, I found June likable.

      • Aquagranny911

From what little I saw, while that family may look like a hot mess, they seem to love & care for each other & try to help their community.

IMO, the Kardashions & some others come a lot closer to the term “white trash” despite their $$$. Just saying…..

From Boston, a Lesson About Obamacare
    BY JONATHAN COHN

President Obama was in Boston on Wednesday—not to watch a baseball game, but to send a message about health care reform: The idea really works. Given all the news about Obamacare lately, it’s a message the country very much needs to hear. The template for the Affordable Care Act is the reforms that Massachusetts officials enacted in 2006. As almost everybody knows by now, the Red Sox organization promoted the Massachusetts health reforms, sponsoring efforts to enroll people and even having players appear in ads directly addressing the young, healthy people who might think insurance was unnecessary.

Kenyans Take Women’s and Men’s New York Marathon Races

Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya, 32, the defending champion of the New York City Marathon in 2011, won the 2013 race on Sunday, pulling away from the pack in the last few miles.
    ….
In the women’s race, Priscah Jeptoo, 29, of Kenya, surged from behind to defeat Buzunesh Deba, who lives in New York. She trailed Deba by nearly 3.5 minutes at the halfway point, and started making her move as the race entered Manhattan. She passed Deba with just more than 2 miles to go.

Pittsburgh man accused by witness of armed robbery released after surveillance video shows him elsewhere

Police didn’t want to hear DeAndre Brown’s alibi. They wanted him to confess to a crime instead. Never mind that he had no criminal record. A witness placed the 26-year-old Pittsburgh-area security guard at the scene, and that was good enough to lock him up for a month, despite the existence of a surveillance tape showing him at a training event somewhere else.

Prosecutors at the Allegheny County district attorney’s office withdrew charges against him Friday, once a member of the district attorney’s office reviewed the tape — something Brown’s attorney Patrick Nightingale says the investigating officer refused to do, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.[....]

          • Aquagranny911

Better! I love plantain. How are you going to fix it?

          • crazycanuck

AG, this was my first time trying it. It was ok first try. I started by just throwing the plantain in the frying pan. I was like hmmmm that doesn’t seem right lol. I’m looking for a recipe now. It didn’t turn out bad though, I burnt some of them.

          • Aquagranny911

I’ve never cooked it myself but what I have had was made into a kind of fritter & deep fried, I think. It had a kind of spicy, crispy coating on the outside, moist & tasty on the inside.

I also had it in Africa chopped into a kind of stew. That was okay but not as good as the fried ones I had here.

          • crazycanuck

I’m going to try it again next week. I’ll get a recipe from my cousin. She’s a great cook.

          • vulcan_girl

I found a recipe I like, but for green plantain.

Peel and slice the plantain then boil for 45 mins or until soft. Using some of the water, mash like potatoes, adding salt to taste. Heat some oil in a skillet. Form the plantain into patties and fry both sides until crispy.

I like them with fry sauce, a mixture of ketchup and mayo. NOT miracle whip!

Say Hello To The First-Ever All-Electric School Bus

[....] Motiv Power Systems and Trans Tech Bus developed the first electric school bus for Kings Canyon Unified School District in Central California. The design is “battery agnostic,” according to a statement from Jim Castelaz, Founder and CEO of Motiv, meaning it isn’t tied to one brand or kind of battery, so it would be able to use new battery technologies, or deal with discontinuation of an old one.

The bus seats up to 32 students, or 24 students and one wheelchair. Districts can choose range limits of either 80 or 100 miles, depending on the number of battery packs. And with fast-charging technology, a 50 percent charge will take under an hour, though a full charge will take eight.[....]

Bill Moyers makes some good points. But then he resorts back to emprog nonsense, attacking President Obama for not enacting a single payer. He justifies the attack by citing polls that supposedly supported a single payer. Of all the people, Moyers, who worked under LBJ, should have known better. Polls don’t enact legislations; Congress does. There was absolutely no chance that Congress, even the one controlled by Democrats, was willing to enact a single payer law.

      • qosine

Serial Plagiarist Rand Paul Melts Down and Incoherently Babbles About Footnotes on ABC
By: Jason Easley more from Jason Easley
    Sunday, November, 3rd, 2013, 1:52 pm

The plagiarism scandal is starting to get to Sen. Rand Paul. When asked about it on ABC’s This Week, Paul went on a rambling and incoherent discussion about footnotes.
    ………………………………………………

What this scandal has done is to confirm everything that was already suspected about Sen. Paul. He will still run for president in two years. He will raise lots of money. The people who voted for his dad will come out again and vote for him, but Rand Paul isn’t presidential material. A serious presidential contender doesn’t try to dig his way out of trouble by rambling on about footnotes on national television.

Real Talk: what’s the difference between a prostitute who gets paid to sleep with men and uses the money to pay for their bills or hair or nails or what not, and a woman who gets money from her boyfriend whenever he comes over for some “alone” time? Let me just say I ask because im having this issue with my younger sister and I am very uncomfortable with some behaviors of hers and im trying to explain to her why?

    • Town

The prostitute is honest about it.

      • lamh36

I hear ya Town and I actually agree with you too.

I’ve already told my sister that I hope she’s able to do for herself, cause this counting on her BF to do it could come back to bite her in the azz.

My sister is young but she already has this pattern, and I guess as an older sister, you don’t want to see your younger sisters get hurt, but ain’t much I can do about it.

But she was def raised in a house where her grandmother was an independent woman even though she was married, she still made sure she had her own things and was able to take care of herself if my grandfather died or left her alone (they did divorce while my sister lived with them). So maybe I’m just worried about her ‘state of mind” more than anything.

But I can’t do anything about it, she is an adult, and I believe in hard lessons teachings.

So I just let her do what she do and that’s it and I hope for the best for her.

        • Town

I don’t know. It’s tough especially when you see which road a relationship is headed down.

    • Tafr

I would say the difference is your sister is in a relationship with this man. As long as she is not sleeping with a bunch of men to pay her bills I see nothing wrong with it. Of course I do not know the details. I do think that she is lucky to have a sister that is concerned and looking out for her.

    – - — – -Fans hope John Coltrane home can become NY museum

    — – - – –In a quiet, tree-lined suburb of New York City sits an unassuming brick ranch house that many musicians consider hallowed ground.
This is where saxophonist John Coltrane composed the epic 1964 jazz masterpiece “A Love Supreme,” shortly after moving into the Dix Hills, Long Island, home. Although he only lived there three years — Coltrane died of cancer in 1967 at age 40 — musicians including Carlos Santana and Coltrane’s jazz saxophonist son Ravi are among those backing a volunteer effort to turn the dilapidated, four-bedroom house into a museum and learning center.

“The Coltrane Home is a beacon to anyone interested in jazz history, cultural history, African-American history, New York history and American history,” Santana said in a statement promoting a Manhattan fundraiser where he helped raise $30,000. The
guitar virtuoso has been a Coltrane fan for decades; he released a 1973 album with fellow guitarist John McLaughlin called “Love Devotion Surrender” as a Coltrane tribute.”

The move to restore the home began about a decade ago when local jazz enthusiast Steve Fulgoni learned a developer had purchased the 3.5-acre (1.4-hectare) property with plans to demolish the home and build three smaller houses. He organized a lobbying effort to save the home, and eventually Huntington town officials purchased the property from the developer for $975,000 and designated it as a town park.

The New York Times Editorial Page: Congressional Republicans have stoked consumer fears and confusion with charges that the health care reform law is causing insurers to cancel existing policies and will force many people to pay substantially higher premiums next year for coverage they don’t want. That, they say, violates President Obama’s pledge that if you like the insurance you have, you can keep it.

    ……………………………………..

This overblown controversy has also obscured the crux of what health care reform is trying to do, which is to guarantee that everyone can buy insurance without being turned away or charged exorbitant rates for pre-existing conditions and that everyone can receive benefits that really protect them against financial or medical disaster, not illusory benefits that prove inadequate when a crisis strikes.

A MANIFESTO?!?!?! Is this mofo for real????

Snowden publishes ‘manifesto’ as White House, lawmakers deny plea for clemency
By Simon Moya-Smith, Staff Writer, NBC News

A German news magazine published a manifesto Sunday by former U.S. intelligence contractor-turned-runaway Edward Snowden as he pleaded with the U.S. government for clemency.

In the statement, titled “A Manifesto for the Truth” and published by German news magazine Der Spiegel, Snowden said current debates over mass surveillance in countries across the globe have showed his revelations were helping to bring about change.

“Instead of causing damage, the usefulness of the new public knowledge for society is now clear because reforms to politics, supervision and laws are being suggested,” he wrote.

Snowden, who currently has been granted temporary asylum in Russia, said telling the truth should not be considered a criminal offense.

    — -Feinstein Responds To LAX Shooting: ‘There’s A Hammer Lock On The Congress By The Gun Owners And Gun People’

——–Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) predicted that an assault weapons ban would not pass the Congress in the aftermath of Friday’s shooting at Los Angeles’ LAX Airport. The suspected gunman, 23-year-old Paul Ciancia, “pulled a Smith & Wesson .223-caliber assault rifle from his duffel bag” and opened fire at a security checkpoint, killing one TSA agent and wounding six others. The incident is the second airport shooting in six months.

“The weapon was a .223 M&P15, the “M&P” stands for military and police. Clearly designed not for general consumption, but through
practice now general consumption. Same gun that was used at Aurora,” she said during an appearance on CBS’s Face The Nation, referring to the 2012 movie theater shooting that killed 12 people and injured 70 others. — [DANG --RE-THUCKERS!!!]

Asked if legislation limiting the ownership of assault weapons could
garner Congressional support in the aftermath of the shooting, Feinstein predicted that it could not, adding, “I think there’s a hammerlock on the Congress by the gun owners and gun people, and it doesn’t matter.”
Indeed, the NRA has lobbied to make it easier to bring firearms into airports.

    POU FAM♥- – –THIS is DISGUSTIN’ – — -BUT IT’s TRUTH!!- -

    – – - -How The NRA Made It Easier To Bring Guns Into Airports– -
    – –On Friday, a gunman “pulled a Smith & Wesson .223-caliber assault rifle from his duffel bag” and opened fire on an airport. Officials have arrested the alleged shooter, 23-year-old Paul Ciancia, who killed a TSA agent and wounded six others at a security checkpoint. The incident is the second airport shooting in six months.

The National Rifle Association has not yet said a word on the tragedy (the day before, the NRA tweeted a story about the so-called “exploitation” of Sandy Hook). But in the past, the NRA has vigorously campaigned to make it easier to bring firearms into airports and criticized TSA agents for their aggressive efforts to ensure guns don’t make it onto a plane. Federal law prevents all travelers from transporting firearms beyond checkpoints (they must be unloaded, checked, and declared in luggage), but the NRA has been a force in weakening state law to permit guns before the security checkpoint.

Advance laws that allow guns in airport terminals.

Over the last decade, the NRA has repeatedly lobbied against
airport firearm restrictions. According to the Law Center to Prevent
Gun Violence, states including Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana,
Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin either expressly allow firearms in specific sections or only prohibit

    firearms in airports beyond checkpoints.
And in California in 2012, the NRA formally opposed Assembly Bill 2182, which would have required a person be arrested if they brought a firearm into the airport and ban them from entering in the future. The bill never moved from committee. More recently, bills introduced in Virginia, Georgia, and Ohio would allow people to carry their weapons inside.

Intimidate TSA agents for aggressively screening for guns.

——-Pelosi: Obama a president of ‘great vision’

    — – - -House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Sunday dismissed Mitt Romney’s statement that President Obama’s second term is rotting away.
Pelosi said she missed Romney’s appearance on “Meet the Press,” during which the former GOP presidential candidate said Obama’s broken promise that everyone who liked their healthcare plan could keep it has undermined Obama’s presidency.

“I don’t even know why Romney was on that show myself,” she said in an interview on MSNBC. “I want to know what about the future —what about the future.
But the fact is that President Obama is a president of great vision, of great knowledge, of great judgment.”
Pelosi noted that Obama led the effort to overhaul the healthcare system, an effort in which former presidents have failed.

The Associated Press reported Sunday that at least 3.5 million people who buy insurance on the individual market have received cancellation notices for existing plans. The administration has consistently noted that the individual market makes up 5 percent of people.

“For 95 percent of the American people who have health insurance that is the case,” Pelosi said. “For the small number in the private market, they will do better.”

For people with preexisting conditions, Pelosi called the healthcare law a “godsend, emphasis on the God.”

This is a remarkable trajectory for a group that, back in 1992, supported George H.W. Bush over Bill Clinton by a strong 54-30 margin. In every election since then, Asians have increased their support for the Democratic candidate, including elections like 2004 where most other groups, even progressive ones, were going in the opposite direction:

Why is this? One reason is the GOP’s dreadful record on immigration, an issue of considerable importance to the Asian-American community.
Another is that Asian-Americans are a strongly pro-government
constituency. In a massive Pew study of Asians, released last year, Asians endorsed a bigger government providing more services over a smaller government providing fewer services by 55-36.
That’s a sharp contrast with the public as a whole, who endorsed smaller over larger government by 52-39.

A new poll from CAP and PolicyLink provides another reason why this group would find today’s GOP unpalatable: Asians are the most enthusiastic and unafraid supporters of America’s rising diversity.

      1. There is no more educated populace in this country than the Asian Community overall. (yes, African immigrants are the most educated, but I said Asian community overall.) A party that slams education does not appeal to them.
      2. Asians believe in PUBLIC EDUCATION, thus, when there is a highly rated public school district, check the demographics – Asians will be overly represented in numbers unlike their actual numbers in the general population. They are NOT down with the ‘destroy the public school’ kick of the GOP
      3. Who is the community with the most immigrants by percentage? If you said Asians, ding ding ding, we have a winner. So, all the GOP anti-immigrant rhetoric doesn’t go over well. Not if Mama, Grandma and Grandpa are just relatively fresh off the boat (or plane).

      4. Asians look at Barack Obama, and the path that he took to success – get a good education, apply yourself, work your ass off – it’s everything they tell their children. If you dismiss what Barack Obama has done, then what are you going to do to THEIR children?

      5. Asians weren’t on Mars for the previous 43 White Presidents. They understand the fundamental level of disrespect shown this President, and they know it’s based on RACE…basically, they know, all that aren’t self-haters like Michelle Malkin, that the GOP don’t like anybody who isn’t White.

I think too when you have a bloc that is overwhelmingly D, Indians, expectations will be defied. Disrespect shown along the way to Bill Lann Lee and that scientist at Los Alamos (blanking on his name) haven’t been a good look for the Rs.

Wasn’t there another Asian lawyer, judicial nominee out of Berkeley that the GOP blocked? And on a shallow note, PBO has a fine Asian brother-in-law. (My friend met him and was dying. lol)

Was looking for write-ups on the September jobs numbers and came across this piece of trolling:

    Young Conservatives ‏@YoungCons
Obama slammed racist George Bush for 10.6% black unemployment, it’s now 12.9%…

They can STFU with the quickness. Bush inherited a surplus; PBO got a bona fide economic disaster dumped into his lap. PBO’s admin also was making the point that the Bush admin didn’t do enough to create the types of manufacturing jobs which disproportionately employ black people. Creating those jobs has been a MAJOR focus of the PBO admin. I’m not afraid to disagree with the President on this or that issue, but that meme above is a miracle of nerve and chutzpah. The far right can have a stadium full of seats.
