Jon Favreau on the Destructive Rise of the No-Government

The Republican Party is divided—and the small-government conservatives, who want to reduce government’s size but preserve its institutions, are losing. Jon Favreau on the ruinous ideology that’s ascendant.

Nine months after a decisive loss in the 2012 elections, the battle for the soul of the Republican Party—or whatever’s left of it—has begun.

I’m not talking about a battle between moderates and conservatives. The conservatives won that fight a long time ago. Our children may never believe thatmoderate Republicans once roamed the Earth, advocating policies that would limit carbon pollution and invest in scientific research, reform our schools and build new roads, promote national service, reduce the influence of money in politics, and require individuals who can afford health insurance to take responsibility for buying it. Soon enough, these politicians will exist only in the minds of ’90s-era pundits andAaron Sorkin’s writing staff.

The conservatives have finally purified the Republican Party, dispatching moderate infidels in primary after primary, demanding fealty to their agenda of huge tax cuts and drastically lower spending. They have used their sizable numbers in Congress to help realize that agenda, with periodic assists from a president who has always been more fiscally responsible than his enemies would admit.

Yep, they set them loose and now they can’t rein them in or control them. I don’t feel sorry for them at all, let them reap what they sowed. And if democrats take advantage of this upheaval in the republican party we can win. But unfortunately we have some who hate PBO as much as the teabaggers do. They need to get in step with the program asap!

TEA PARTY PLANS TO ABANDON GOP STARS
By MICHAEL J. MISHAK— Aug. 4 8:05 AM EDT

MIAMI (AP) — This wasn’t the revolution the tea party had in mind.

Four years ago, the movement and its potent mix of anger and populism persuaded thousands of costumed and sign-waving conservatives to protest the ballooning deficit and President Obama’s health care law. It swept a crop of no-compromise lawmakers into Congress and governor’s offices and transformed political up-and-comers, including Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, into household names.

But as many tea party stars seek re-election next year and Rubio considers a 2016 presidential run, conservative activists are finding themselves at a crossroads. Many of their standard-bearers have embraced more moderate positions on bedrock issues such as immigration and health care, broadening their appeal in swing states but dampening grass-roots passion.

    • conlakappa

I love the notion of stars in that party and Stay Thirsty ranking high among them. It feels like the popularity of such formats as American Idol have these people either confused or convinced that simply calling someone a star makes him/her so.

Ron Fournier claims he also complained about GWB’s photographer. I asked for a link to his criticism.

    • JojoRaze

They mad because it’s obvious Souza has grown to love PBO not only as a subject of photography but as a prez and person, so he always takes flattering shots of PBO and Bo. Souz shots have gotten more personal and positive, but that,s what WH photogs are supposed to do. Even that famous LBJ shot of him tired and stressed listening to his son’s recording of Vietnam was to show he cared about Vietnam, as if he had the weight on his shoulders. WH photogs have always been propagandists, but the media is so anti-PBO and mad that there is no Repubs with a story and face as captivating as PB O they whine. Too bad, so sad.

        Wonderfully said, JojoRaze.

These media GOP propagandist are unethical!

  • jziglar

Ron Fournier is a liar. He never demanded anything from Bush let alone his presidential photographer.

    • AxelFoley

      Oh they HATE social media.

    • nasani

They want someone to purposely take photos of the President that feeds into their negative portrayal of him. They just can’t stand to see pictures of the President who is warmly loved by ordinary people — and especially by children of all races and in many nations– and who is equally loved and respected by foreign leaders. Such pictures debunk their widely disseminated meme that President Obama is aloof and arrogant and does not relate well with people.

  • malletgirl02

I was looking for the president Obama Facebook page when I was searching for it I saw that there was a group called “Obama is the worst president in history” or something like that. I’m like really? These people have no concept of history. What about Andrew Trail of Tears Jackson, or the two presidents leading up to the Civil War Pierce and Buchanan? How about Herbert Great Depression Hoover?

    • Alma98

      They weren’t black.

      • conlakappa

But how white were they? If they are looking back in nostalgia at an America that didn’t belong to their people, they are truly delusional. Yes, I harp on it largely because it makes me laugh that (1) they don’t know their own histories yet feel free to comment on the state of things now and (2) if your name ends in -is, -poulos, some vowel, or -ik, You wouldn’t have likely ben grandfathered in because your grandfathers couldn’t be citizens/vote. They weren’t white, they were other.

        • Alma98

Absolutely! I laughed when the show Who Do You Think You Are? would have white folks on. They would be twisting themselves in knots, fingers crossed and everything hoping their ancestors didn’t own slaves. Especially the one episode with Paula Deen, when she found out her relatives was trading slaves she act like she wanted to faint. When in reality she had to know about it, big phoney.

          • conlakappa

Speaking of such, I am going to a program at the Smithsonian next month hosted by Gates and called, Searching for Your Roots. It is free but the tickets were all reserved in less than a day; pretty crazy considering it was announced at 5:00 p.m. on a Friday! It will be webcast and once I see that info, I will post it. It is at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on September 12.

          • Alma98

Thanks, I love his series about finding your roots!

          • JojoRaze

I think Henry Louis Gates show on PBS showed that both Kevin Bacon and kyra Sedgwick’s people, who were Northerners and Quakers were involved in slavery and slave trading, before AND AFTER the quaker church told members they shouldn’t be involved and they were so embarrassed to find out that their thoroughly Northern families were deeply involved in slavery. And Kyra Sedwick’s great great granddaddy knew he was wrong for being involved in slavery because he tried to erase his involvement but someone was doing research on the family since they were a prominent New england family for a history paper and found the document that proved that the granddad had bought a slave woman.

          • Alma98

I saw that episode, they tried to atone for it by burying the slave in the family graveyard.

    • jziglar

I think they started calling him the worst president when he was first sworn in. There are plenty of white people in this country who are fully invested in wanting Obama to fail because they don’t want a successful non white president. If Obama succeeds then it will open the floodgates and America will never be the same again. In the end it doesn’t matter because we will see more non whites in positions of power as time goes on.

      • nasani

You speak TRUTH, Jziglar! White supremacist hate smart non-white people who debunk the myth of white superiority and black inferiority.

    • Town

      But they were white.

I think goldenstar asked about this on the previous thread…

    A New Education Debate

You may have seen stories about the poor quality of Washington,
D.C.’s public schools.[....] What you may not have heard is that after years of high-stakes testing and mass teacher firings along with school closings and reorganizations by Rhee and her successor and protégé, Kaya Henderson, many D.C. public schools are no better. In some cases, they’re worse.

The Washington Post reported in June that test scores declined at 10 of the 18 schools that were reorganized under Rhee and Henderson between 2008 and 2010. Test scores are up in only six of those schools — two others have since closed. That’s a pretty poor record.[....] A series of protests and grassroots organizing drives in Florida, Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington state — just to name a few — amount to a demand for a new debate over education policy.[....]

She also ignored the wishes of communities and hasn’t been accessible to teachers, if they are to be believed. Same beat, different drummer.

        • goldenstar

          • conlakappa

Word meets deed again, I guess. Or perhaps didn’t in this case. I don’t come into regular contact with DC teachers any more. One has been on my mind so I shall query her. She is a special-ed teacher. Goodness knows that lot gets kicked about.

            An overemphasis on teachers

[....] It has become conventional in educational policy discussion to assert that “research shows” that “teachers are the most important influence on student achievement.” There is, in fact, no serious research that shows any such thing. The assertion results from a careless glide from
“teachers being the most important n-school influence,” to teachers being the most important influence overall.[....]

Of course, some children from improverished backgrounds will outperform typical children from literate and secure backgrounds, but on average, the extent to which children come to school prepared to take advantage of what school has to offer is a more important predictor than what even the best school can do.[....]

[....] Under the deal, according to the New York Times, the government, “We The People,” will continue subsidizing the healthcare of ALL politicians and their staff in the order of $5,000 per individual per year, and $11,000 per family per year. They must

The Post Office Wants To Deliver Alcohol To Your House In A Bid To Save Itself

[....] In an interview with The Associated Press, Donahoe said Thursday delivery of alcoholic beverages is on his wish list as the agency considers ways to raise revenue and save money after losing $16 billion last year. He also said he endorses ending most door-to-door and Saturday mail deliveries as a way to help stabilize the service’s finances.

Donahoe said delivering alcohol has the potential to raise as
much as $50 million a year. He mentioned how customers might want to, for example, mail bottles of wine home when they tour vineyards. Donahoe said his agency has looked at the possibility of using special boxes that would hold two, four or six bottles and ship for a flat-rate

Poverty Among College Students Increases The Overall Rate

[....] The Census Bureau calculated that 15.2 percent of the population officially lives in poverty. But for college students living off-campus and not living with relatives, the poverty rate is 51.8 percent. When eliminating them from the official poverty rate calculation, only 14.5 percent of Americans live below the poverty level.

College students who live in dorms are automatically eliminated from calculations of the poverty rate, but students living off-campus are not, so the Census Bureau isolated data for these students recorded by the American Community Survey from 2009 to 2011.[....] The data is particularly striking when narrowed down to college towns.[....]

Good afternoon POU. I just got caught up on Glenn Thrush and Ron Fournier having a sad about WH Photographer Pete Sousa. Even for these two Obama hating GOP kiss asses this is just pitiful. I keep saying it and these 2520s keep proving me right…Barack Obama has them so messed up in the head they don’t know what to do.

    • conlakappa

It really does come off nuts to have fits about Souza. Back to talk about propaganda? Photojournalists are so rare [the fault of budget cuts at papers, not access] these days but I bet they have as much access to the President as any other journalist. This claim seems specious.

      • JojoRaze

The argument is idiotic msm claims-of-bias-ism. It’s basically ‘OMG, PBO is being presented as a handsome, faithful hubby and dad, but there is another side to him-which we don’t know and can’t prove but BIAS!’ IT’s dumb crybabyism. No one is stopping Boehner or Cantor or any Repub leader fom shaping their narrative as not jerks, so there is no bias. As someone said below, the problem isn’t Pete Souza but their own weakness and debility in shaping the narrative around PBO. No matter what they say about him, PBO can debunk the myth and lies via social media, through Pete Souza, or David Plouffe, or David Axelrod, or most famously through Stef cutter. She got famous for her YouTube vids debunking mitt Romney’s lies, even though she’d been a political operative for years. Social media made the difference in the campaign, allowing PBO to talk around, above, and below the msm. Remember the romnesia attack that was pure social media campaigning/editing based on a speech PBO gave for promulagtion in social media. The media is mourning the fact they don’t get to choose which pics to disseminate, but the White House does, and does so expediciously and sophisticatedly

        • creolechild

“No one is stopping Boehner or Cantor or any Repub leader fom shaping their narrative as not jerks, so there is no bias.”

This is what bothers them so much because as you’ve stated PBO can debunk the myths and lies that crop up but the same can’t be said for the “usual suspects” you’ve mentioned above because 99.1% of what’s said about them are true. Therein lies the difference…

Chris Wallace Rips Eric Cantor as Fox News Drops a Reality Bomb on House Republicans

    By: Jason Easley
    Aug. 4th, 2013

Chris Wallace tore through Eric Cantor with some tough realistic question on Fox News Sunday, and proved that Fox News is frighteningly more in touch with reality than House Republicans.

Chris Wallace first asked Cantor, “Is what you have been doing the best way to spend Congress’s time when you are about to go on recess for five full weeks?” Cantor tried to defend the votes with standard House Republican talking points, government doesn’t create jobs, blah, blah, blah. Wallace then dropped a reality bomb on Majority Leader Cantor, “But Congressman, rightly or wrongly, none of these bills that you passed is going to become law. Your own members say they’re not going to pass the Senate. The president won’t sign them. Let’s talk reality. You haven’t passed a Farm Bill. You’ve only passed 4 of the 12 appropriations bills you’re supposed to pass. We face a government shutdown and debt limit in the fall. Again, is the best way to spend your time passing bills that aren’t going to become law? An added question, with so much unfinished business why not stick around instead of taking a five week vacation. Rep. Cantor blamed Obama for being out giving campaign speeches, and not cooperating with the House.

Wallace kept after Cantor, “You could tend to your own knitting. You could pass a Farm Bill. You could take. You have the power of the purse. Only 4 of the 12 appropriations bills have you even passed. Why not do what the House is supposed to do?” Cantor claimed they passed a Farm Bill, and tried to turn their complete failure to pass a comprehensive Farm Bill into Republican reform. Cantor blamed the Senate for lack of passage of appropriations bills, and said the House has passed more than the Senate.

When Fox News is more in touch with reality than the Republican Majority Leader in the House, there’s a big problem.

Riley Cooper’s Grandma: He Made His Bed; ‘Has to Deal with Consequences’
    August 4, 2013 by PJ

Philadelphia Eagles player Riley Cooper messed up big time when he publicly used the n-word and w0n’t be getting any sympathy from this grandma.

Riley’s grandmother Betty told TMZ that it’s his own fault and he has to clean up his own mess: “[Riley] brought it upon himself and he has to deal with the consequences.”

As previously reported, during a recent Kenny Chesney concert, Riley said he would fight “every n***er” at the show and has since taken leave from the Eagles to pursue counseling.

According to his nana, Riley’s behavior is surprising as he was raised in a good household that never condoned racism at all.

But Grandma Betty says its good he’s facing his problem now before it gets any worse.

    — – A-Rod Won’t Play Until 2015: –[Sources Suspension to be announced tomorrow, after negotiations broke down, insiders say] – -

    – - – - – Alex Rodriguez will likely receive his punishment tomorrow: a suspension through the 2014 season, sources tell USA Today and ESPN. MLB and A-Rod’s lawyers were said to he hammering out a settlement, but sources tell ESPN that talks broke down yesterday when commissioner Bud Selig refused to negotiate with the Yankees, and A-Rod pissed him off by telling the media he wouldn’t negotiate at all. MLB reportedly offered him a deal to take lifetime bans off the table if he would agree to potentially being suspended for more than 50 games. A-Rod’s camp “unequivocally” turned the offer down, says ESPN. Now he’s apparently looking at a 215-game ban—the longest ever since Pete Rose’s 1988 lifetime ban, according to USA Today.

A-Rod is expected to appeal the reported suspension, and MLB is also expected to refuse to let him play while he appeals.

Obama order in wake of West blast a ‘game-changer’ in chemical safety, senator says
By REESE DUNKLIN and MATT JACOB
    Updated: 04 August 2013 09:21 AM

Barbara Boxer, chairwoman of the U.S. Senate’s environment and public works committee, sat visibly frustrated in a June congressional hearing. She finally told the Environmental Protection Agency official that “lives are being lost” while the agency failed to better safeguard the fertilizer chemical that blew up West.

Weeks later, Boxer wrote to the nation’s governors. She implored them to do what they could to improve the security of ammonium nitrate. Finally, the California Democrat turned to the White House. The results of her efforts became public last week when President Barack Obama issued an executive order directing the federal government to improve safety at chemical facilities.

“For me, it’s a game-changer,” Boxer said in an interview with The Dallas Morning News. “I saw the intransigence of some of the agencies. I saw them arguing and not committing. … We asked the president to help make sure this [type of disaster] never happens again.”

    — -R.I.P. North Carolina Civil Rights Activist and Attorney Julius Chambers – -AMEN.

    — - Julius Chambers, a Charlotte attorney whose practice was in the forefront of the civil rights movement in North Carolina, has died, his law firm said Saturday. He was 76.
A statement issued by his law firm, Ferguson Chambers & Sumter, said Chambers died Friday after months of declining health. A specific cause of death wasn’t given.

“Mr. Chambers was not the first lawyer of color to try to address the issues of equality,” firm partner Geraldine Sumter said Saturday. “He would tell you he had people like Buddy Malone of Durham that he looked to, the Kennedys out of Winston-Salem. The thing that Mr. Chambers brought to that struggle was a very focused, determined attitude that things were going to change.”
The N.C. chapter of the NAACP called Chambers “a man of tremendous courage.”
    - — -SNIP — – -

Born and raised in Mt. Gilead, Chambers was the third of four children. He came to what was known then as North Carolina College at Durham in 1954 and graduated summa cum laude in 1958. Chambers received a Master of Arts degree in history from the University of Michigan and studied law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received the LLB degree with high honors in 1962 and was admitted to the North Carolina bar.

Chambers also served as chancellor of his alma mater, North Carolina Central University, from 1993 to 2001. “His rich legacy will live on forever at this alma mater through the countless initiatives that began during his tenure and continue to thrive today,” said N.C. Central Chancellor Debra Saunders-White. Sumter said Chambers cared about young people no matter where he went.

    – - -Colleges Help Ithaca Thrive in a Region of Struggles
    – – - –In many ways, this city is not so special. It has a nice lake, some attractive houses with lawns, and a couple of colleges. But many places in upstate New York have lakes and lawns and places of high learning.

What most sets this city of 30,000 apart from many of its neighbors these days is what is absent: fear for its future.

Led by a young mayor with an inspiring back story and an idealist’s approach — he talks about sidewalks in philosophical terms —Ithaca is the upstate exception: a successful liberal enclave in a largely conservative region troubled by unemployment woes, declining or stagnantpopulation, and post-Detroit talk of bankruptcy.
    — -SNIP —

Much of that optimism comes from a reciprocal relationship with two institutions — Cornell University and, to a lesser degree, Ithaca
College — which have poured hundreds of millions of dollars into the economy and created thousands of jobs for everyone from professors to landscapers, and also fostered new companies. Ithaca and its home county, Tompkins, regularly post the lowest unemployment rate in the state. In June, Ithaca’s was 5.7 percent, tied with another college city, Saratoga Springs, where a racetrack drives an annual summer boom.
