Sunday Afternoon Thread: Honoring Dr. Maya Angelou – Phenomenal Women

Maya Angelou Phenomenal Woman

In case you missed it, here are the beautiful tributes to Dr. Maya Angelou by First Lady Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey and Cicely Tyson.

Icebergslim is throwing another “It’s All Obama’s Fault” temper tantrum on Twitter. #RentACenterRuinedTheInnanets

    • gn

      Lawd, what’s she on about?

    • rikyrah

      Huh?
      Huh?

Why folks wanna clown on Sunday?

    • Miranda

She’s just trying to get noticed. what is her rant about?

      • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

She’s blaming the WH because they didn’t get out ahead of the backlash of the Bergdahl swap. She’s gonna ignore the media, like Jake Tapper, specifically looking for Bergdahl critics and not doing research on the background of Bergdahl’s platoon members.

        • rikyrah

you mean the President of the United States didn’t think that there would be a political party up in arms because we got back a POW?

          seriously?

          seriously?

he’s to blame for THEIR HATRED?

          G-T-F-O-H

        • Miranda

What is that dumb-dumb’s twitter name? I hope folks are pushing back on her squawking.

          • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

            @icebergslim1047

Some folks are calling her bs out.

          • AxelFoley

            Me among them.

          • lamh36

hey what’s your twitter name, mine is @psddluva4evah

          • AxelFoley

            @sportjames23

        • gn

IIRC she goes whichever way the wind blows. Total hack like the other one whose name escapes me but would ping back and forth, just blaming the WH for her own inconsistency and lack of logic.

        • Kennymack1971

This is just stupid. There was going to be a backlash over the Bergdahl swap no matter what the WH did. Iceberg wants some attention. These “lefty” Obama critics are just…SMH.

          • gn

It’s just a way to co-sign the far right “from the left.” People like her have been running this game for years and years and years.

          • AxelFoley

Her monkey ass ain’t changed since her DKos days.

          • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

You notice since PBO took office the netroots has slipped into oblivion? This is a cry to get noticed.

    • jziglar

Of course it is. It was also his fault when I tripped down the stairs, and when I accidentally hit my elbow.

    • AxelFoley

      Her dumbass still around?

  • jds09

Only my POU Fam would understand this. On an impulse I checked the audio book version of Renegade by Richard Wolfe. I’m driving around SoCal listening to how the 2008 campaign rolled out and I feel a bit teary. It was just so beautiful.

    • AxelFoley

That was an amazing year and an amazing campaign.

    Trini Trent @TriniTrent · Jun 5

Don Lemon has been in massa’s house too long. He forgot he’s a nigger too.

    • AxelFoley

      SMH

I guess we’re to blame for white folks making up that word in the first place, huh?

  • rikyrah

been reading the POU twitter feed, then went over to find Trini Trent, who is telling the truth about those who were huge in music before Beyonce.

We’re honoring Maya Angelou, looked back at the Legends Ball, and Beyonce didn’t even qualify as a Young’un to Oprah when she did the Legends Ball weekend.

Damn. Alicia got in, but Bey didn’t.

    Considering Mariah Carey’s New Album
    Wednesday 3:45pm

Last week, Mariah Carey released her 14th studio album, Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse. Here are some things to consider when considering Mariah Carey, especially at this juncture in her 24-year career.

Over the last several years, it’s become harder to sell music. In the first quarter of this year, CD sales were down 20 percent compared to the first quarter of 2013. Digital sales had slid by 13.3 percent.

Over an individual artist’s career, it’s also become harder for individual artists—especially women—to sell music. Our culture’s obsession with youth only has intensified. It’s insane to look back on the ’80s and see people like Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and Patti LaBelle churning out mainstream hits while they were in their 40s. That just doesn’t happen today.

    ……………………………………..

Over the course of her 24-year career, Mariah Carey has notched 18 No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, and is routinely introduced as the “biggest selling female artist of all time.” A discussion of commercial performance is essential to her work, because for so long it defined her persona. She is not merely a singer, not merely a songwriter, but a hit-maker, someone whose genius lay in her ability to speak to the masses. Though through her first five albums, she was the type of sure-bet artist whose every release was obviously going to be a hit (Katy Perry, sadly, is this type of artist today; Lady Gaga was a few years ago), the effort involved was plain to see. She was a workhorse—1996 was the only year of the ’90s that did not see a major release from her (I’m including her MTV Unplugged EP and hits compilation #1’s in this tally, as they both spawned hit singles). She would rerecord singles—sometimes multiple times—for remixes spanning various musical genres.

This seemingly indefatigable work ethic paired well with Mariah Carey’s craft. Though her lungs seemed to have unlimited capacity, and her voice capable of reaching octaves beyond our ability to hear, her delivery has always felt fraught, calculated. Carey always has been an active singer. No matter how easy the notes came, you were still aware of the push behind them (as opposed to, say, Whitney Houston, who at her peak just flowed; Aretha Franklin gushed). Effort has always been this woman’s aesthetic.

    http://gawker.com/considering-mariah-careys-new-album-1585132670

    • Town

Mariah Carey needs to pack it up as far as album sales. Get yourself a Celine Dion style gig in Vegas for a few years and write for other artists. Your time is up and you had a good run.

      • Alma98

My daughter said the albums sucks.

        • Town

Everyone keeps saying GLITTER & CHARMBRACELET were flops, and I guess compared to her other albums they were, but I think both of them sold better than her last 3 albums, probably combined. And both of them were pretty good albums.

It’s all in marketing. You have trash on the radio today but they are marketed heavily. They don’t want to invest in Mariah Carey anymore so she needs to leave the stage before Sandman sweeps her off the stage.

          • Alma98

I agree with everything you said Town.
I think she would do very well in a Vegas show.

          • rikyrah

yep. Park her, Nick and Dem Babies in Vegas and do the Celine Dion thing

          • AxelFoley

She needs to be like Diana Ross. When was the last time Diana released an album, 1983?

I bet Diana still cashing checks, tho.

          • Town

Beyoncé better gyrate and wiggle as much as she can in the next several years. She’ll be 33 this year. Nobody’s going want to see her shake & shimmy past 40. Ask Janet Jackson & Madonna.

20, 30 years ago you could see women in their 40s shimmy & do their thang & be sexy & hot, etc.

But now you have the Miley Cyrus way of thinking, where women over 40 shouldn’t have sex, think about sex, be sexy and should just put on some Mom Jeans and sit in a rocking chair.

Maybe Beyoncé can buck this trend but the way the industry is going, I dunno.

Bob Berghdal’s Compassion And Deep Thoughts Confound The GOP
Author: Julie Driscoll June 7, 2014 2:40 pm

Bob Bergdahl, the father of rescued POW, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, may just be a little too intelligent and a little too understated and not nearly enough of an angry white dude to satisfy the GOP’s blood lust.

Mr. Bergdahl is an interesting character. Unfortunately, it’s his character that’s being slandered by the right, mainly because the GOP hasn’t a clue what to do with a guy who is soft-spoken and not hell-raising, has compassion for his son’s captors, is a deep thinker, appears to have the ability to walk in others’ shoes, and – most importantly – isn’t an ass-kicking, gun-wielding red-faced blowhard. All of this is very novel – strange, scary, therefore bad – for their very narrow mindsets and sliver-thin world views.

Tracy Morgan ‘More Responsive’ Day After Crash, Rep Says
    June 8, 2014

Comedian Tracy Morgan was “more responsive” today, the comedian’s rep said, one day after the limousine bus he was riding in was involved in a fatal multi-car crash on the New Jersey Turnpike.

The crash early Saturday killed one man on the limo bus and injured four others, including Morgan, 45.

“While Tracy remains in critical condition, he has been more responsive today, which is an incredibly encouraging sign,” his rep Lewis Kay said.

Morgan suffered a broken leg, a broken femur, a broken nose and several broken ribs, among other injuries, Kay said.

“He had surgery earlier today on his leg,” the rep said. “We expect him to remain in the hospital for several weeks. His family is tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans.”

The driver of the limo bus said that after the crash her heard Morgan screaming.

“I climbed around and heard Tracy screaming for help,” said his driver, Tyrone Gale. “I climbed up on the body of the limo bus … but I couldn’t reach them.”

N.J. State Police said they believed a truck driver was dozing and
didn’t see traffic slowing in front of his 18-wheeler until it was too
late, crashing into the vehicle carrying comedian Morgan and his
    entourage.

“I just remember the impact. … We didn’t know which way was up, which way was down. I don’t know if we flipped several times or one time,” Gale said. “I saw the condition of everybody and I knew it would just make it worse if I tried to pull them up and out of the vehicle.”

The silence from Veteran and POW/MIA groups about Bergdahl is curious.

  • TresL

MSNBC didn’t waste anytime disrupting Disrupt. Just before 4pm I was scrolling through the TV guide and noticed Lock Up was scheduled at 4pm. I thought Finney would get at least one more show to say her goodbyes. I suppose it’s possible she did it yesterday. I don’t know because I wasn’t home at that time.

    • nellcote

They did caught on video yesterday. I realize Karen is a Hillary supporter but I’d take her over MHP anytime at this point. At least I didn’t feel like shooting my television in frustration after watching.

      • TresL

Wow! That’s cold; not even one more show to say goodbye. ITA about MHP. She has turned out to be a total disaster.

But dem emos loves them some MHP.

    • Kennymack1971

How many more will it take before this country, collectively, says enough? How many people who were only in the wrong place at the wrong tine have to die before we say no more? Sadly I already know how this pattern works. Prayers for the victims and their families.

    • nellcote

      from the comments at LGF:

So when the guys walk into Walmart with all those weapons, are we supposed to be not alarmed because “oh, it’s probably just those Open Carry Texas folk expanding their display activism to another state?”

Or should we, when next we see the OCT folk entering a premises… stand our ground because we fear they’re Las Vegas Revolutionaries?

      I’m so confused.

Yes she is, that is what I mean. You can decide to be capable every once in awhile. That is not what a real reporter does. She puts too much of her emo nonsense in her reporting and too much of her biases.

I know it’s a big joke about the History channel showing the history of the Nazis all the time but lately I’ve found myself watching, trying to understand how they bamboozled the German people and took over. In an actual election they never got a majority of the votes. I’m thinking it was something like 35 percent maybe a little higher.

But Paul von Hindenburg gave them legitimacy and all the tools they needed which allowed them to do what they did best: Lie, bully, scapegoat. All the while allegedly restoring pride and promising the moon.

It didn’t hurt that they a had a doofus yet highly charismatic leader. I remember watching Leni Riefenstal’s Triumph Of The Will. I couldn’t understand a word he said but Adolf was mesmerizing. I had to turn the channel for fear I would start goose stepping around my living room. That’s the only thing the GOP is missing because they have a plethora of useful idiots to do exactly as their told.

I always thought the mustache was creepy.

          • Aquagranny911

That was the case Woody. They had at least 3 parties strong enough to get the votes & the Nazi party got the most, thus they also got Hitler.

This is one reason why I get shivers when people start talking about we need another party here in the US to balance Dems & Repubs.

        • crazycanuck

I think with NAZI Germany they had a lousy economy,so they were able to use that to ‘bamboozle’ the people so to speak.

          • nellcote

If you listen to the right wing, the US has never recovered from the meltdown and is headed for bankruptcy. Unfortunately too many of them actually believe it.

        • TyrenM

Nellcote. I watched “The World Wars” last weekend and was thinking how they had neocon crew speaking on it Cheney/Powell… a couple others. Also, how US/West did all they talked about banning others. Mustard gas in WWI, Interning Japanese in WWII, Torture. Way too much Cheney in that piece to think of coincidences.

I forgot “either you’re with us or against us.” Straight up Nazi shit.

          • nellcote

I tried to watch it as I really like seeing film from the time but too much commentary to not see an agenda on the part of the film makers.

          • Aquagranny911

If I believed in “the Anti-Christ” & a true El Diablo, I would put Cheney’s face on that!

          • nellcote

I’m not a believer so I find the debate about whether Evil is an internal or external force fascinating.

        • Aquagranny911

Nellcote, part of that was a fall out of the WWI punishment of Germany. They were so viciously treated & the reparations were so severe that the people & the economy suffered. They were not just beaten but ground into dust. Their anger & despair festered and became septic. Big money stirred the pot but they built a monster that was soon beyond their control.

This is one reason why after WWII, even though Germany was separated into East & West, the US did all they could to help West Germany rebuild. We did the same with Japan.

I was addicted to a show on the Animal Planet channel called Pit Bulls and Parolees about a pit bull rescue center in NOLA that changed my thinking about them a lot. It’s not the dogs, it’s the owners that should be put down.

        • Aquagranny911

That’s a show on TV. I did animal rescue & fostering for over ten years. Pit bulls & their mixes were the one breed I refused to deal with. I love dogs. I understand them & their needs plus the breeds & what they were bred for.

Some dogs like the pits were bred for one purpose & one purpose only & that is to fight, rip & tear. They don’t need a reason. That is their nature & while I respect that, their owners are foolish to forget it.

Pits are smart. They can be loving & protective but they are also unpredictable. Their jaws have 100s of lbs of foot pound grip, they don’t let go & their teeth are designed for maximum damage.

No dog should ever be left unsupervised around babies or small children. Pits are especially dangerous.

          My two pesos!

A Walk in President Obama’s Shoes
    By zizi2

    ………………………..

In the run-up to the 2008 election, when so much hyperbole and thrills were running up some media legs (nothing sincere except to milk the rising African American political whiz for ratings gold), Candidate Obama modestly saw himself as a “transitional leader”. What did he mean? Few paid attention at the time, yet the clues lie in his book “Audacity of Hope” in which he described America reaching critical crossroads at which she either soars or fragments. To set this country soaring, Obama believed the toxic gunk that had trapped our nation in a thicket of policy, structural, and ideological dysfunction needed to be cleaned out. His Mama had taught him that when you see a problem you tackle it and not wait for someone else to solve it.

In essence he saw himself as a plumber who takes on the unglamorous yet necessary task of unclogging the drains, septic tanks, draining swamps, and the like. He summed it up in his election night victory speech and even more soberly in his first Inauguration address. At the time many thought both speeches were Debbie downers and not commensurate with the public euphoria attending his election as First African American President. His own eye was NEVER off the ball. These were serious times demanding unvarnished grit and stamina to see the necessary task through to the end.

Van Gogh’s Severed Ear Recreated With Relative’s Cells

A German artist has recreated a rare piece of Vincent Van Gogh: the famed artist’s severed ear.

    By Gillian Mohney

The piece, called “Sugababe” by Diemut Strebe, was engineered from tissue created with genetic material from one of Van Gogh’s relatives, according to the artist. Viewers can even speak into the ear, which is connected to a computer processor to translate the sound.

Van Gogh famously cut off his left ear in a reported psychotic episode.

The manufactured ear is currently on display at the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany. But if you can’t get to Europe, the piece will be shown in New York next year.

BREAKING: Obamas Purchased House in Asheville, NC for Post-Presidency
    Anthea Mitchell
    June 07, 2014

Sources have confirmed the Obamas purchased real estate in Asheville, NC. The White House has not yet confirmed.

It seems all the bookmakers sending the Obamas to New York City or back to Chicago after the end of the President’s second term are wrong by a few thousand miles.

A source close to Wall St. Cheat Sheet has confirmed that the Obama family have purchased property in the city of Asheville in North Carolina as a post-Presidency residence. A call to get an official confirmation from the White House wasn’t immediately returned.

The President discussed retirement there last year during his trip to North Carolina during a speech in Asheville. “Love coming to Asheville,” said Obama. “Michelle and I always talk about how after this whole presidency thing, we’re looking for a little spot to –” here an audience member said, “Come on down” — “Come on down? Play a little golf, do a little hiking, fishing, barbecue,” said Obama. “There’s two things that keep bringing me back here. Number one is I really like the people. And number two is 12 Bones, which I will be stopping on the way back to the airport.” On the one hand, a smaller city like Asheville doesn’t offer the same enormous population to lose oneself in as does New York or Chicago. On the other, the president and his wife clearly like the area.

“The president first visited the Asheville area during the campaign, and he liked it so much that he vowed to take his family there. The president and first lady are planning to spend a quiet weekend enjoying some of the many things this beautiful part of the country has to offer,” reported the White House. This, of course, led to a great deal of “vacation like the president” slogans from the city’s tourism industry. “Find out for yourself what makes the Asheville area a vacation destination worthy of a president!” reads an Asheville Chamber of Commerce posting.

    http://wallstcheatsheet.com/politics/where-will-obama-go-after-the-white-house.html

    • Miranda

I think that will be a second home, not the main one, but who knows. That area is extraordinarily beautiful. NC is a beautiful state, but the Asheville area is just breathtaking.

    Obama’s new teammate: Alonzo Mourning

Given their mutual interests, it’s no surprise the two men have become friends.
By JENNIFER EPSTEIN Updated: 6/8/14 8:17 PM EDT

Wary of hangers-on and sycophants, President Barack Obama has made few friends since moving into the White House.
Alonzo Mourning, the former Miami Heat star, is a striking exception.

He was one of many boldface Democratic donors willing to lend their names to Obama’s first presidential campaign and became a member of a small group of ex-NBA players summoned to play basketball with the president. Over the past few years, though, the president and player-turned-philanthropist developed a deeper bond that challenges the “no new friends” mantra the Obamas developed during the 2008 race.

Obama and Mourning have played golf together three times since November and spent time together during a March weekend in the Florida Keys. They talk about sports and family but also discuss social issues — particularly their shared interest in helping underprivileged kids. Mostly, though, they just savor the downtime.

“You get caught up in the fact that he’s so personable you do forget that he is the most powerful man in the world,” Mourning said in an interview. “That’s what he wants when he’s around his friends. He doesn’t want to be strictly political every time that he’s around us. I think he just wants to relax and exhale.”

Colleges are full of it: Behind the three-decade scheme to raise tuition, bankrupt generations, and hypnotize the media
Tuition is up 1,200 percent in 30 years. Here’s why you’re unemployed, crushed by debt — and no one is helping
    Thomas Frank

The price of a year at college has increased by more than 1,200 percent over the last 30 years, far outpacing any other price the government tracks: food, housing, cars, gasoline, TVs, you name it. Tuition has increased at a rate double that of medical care, usually considered the most expensive of human necessities. It has outstripped any reasonable expectation people might have had for investments over the period. And, as we all know, it has crushed a generation of college grads with debt. Today, thanks to those enormous tuition prices, young Americans routinely start adult life with a burden unknown to any previous cohort and whose ruinous effects we can only guess at.

On the assumption that anyone in that generation still has a taste for irony, I offer the following quotation on the subject, drawn from one of the earliest news stories about the problem of soaring tuition. The newspaper was the Washington Post; the speaker was an assistant dean at a college that had just announced a tuition hike of 19 percent; and the question before him was how much farther tuition increases could go. “Maybe all of a sudden this bubble is going to burst,” he was quoted as saying. “How much will the public take?”

Oh, we would take quite a lot, as it happened. It was 1981 when the assistant dean worried in that manner—the very first year of what was once called the “tuition spiral,” when higher ed prices got the attention of the media by outpacing inflation by a factor of two or three. There was something shocking about this development; tuition hadn’t gone up like that during the 1970s, even though that was the heyday of ascending consumer prices.

Yet at that point, the tuition spiral had more than three decades to go—indeed, it is still twisting upward today. But the way we talk about this slow-motion disaster has changed little over the years. Ever since the spiral began, commentators have been marveling at how far it’s gone and wondering how much farther it has yet to run—“the trend can’t continue,” they say every few years. They ask when the families and politicians of America are finally going to get off their knees and do something about it.

Shotgun Behind the Door: How Armed Black Southerners Helped Fight for Civil Rights

Charles Cobb’s new book, This Nonviolent Stuff’ll Get You Killed, tells the story of black Southerners who fought to exercise their 14th, 15th—and Second—amendment constitutional rights.

    By: Blair L.M. Kelley
    Posted: June 5 2014 3:01 AM

Most history students never learn that even Martin Luther King Jr.—arguably history’s greatest spokesperson on behalf of nonviolence—had armed guards stationed outside of his home and a pistol tucked in his sofa in 1955 when he emerged as the leader of the bus boycott in Montgomery, Ala.

    But he did.

As time went on, he came to trust in the philosophy of nonviolence in his personal life as much as he believed in its power politically, and eventually got rid of both the guards and guns. At some point, though, we glossed over this complexity and began to think of nonviolence as preordained and as a natural outgrowth of the movement.

We don’t teach our children about the training civil rights activists had to endure in order to prepare their minds and bodies for nonviolent protests. And we don’t often think about how the movement functioned in rural places, far from the glare of the spotlights of network news cameras. Outside of the national gaze, what might check the violence of white segregationists who resisted every attempt by black citizens to assert their right to vote and to organize politically? How did the movement work in the face of the violence in rural Union County, N.C.; Lowndes County, Ala.; or Sunflower County, Miss.?

That’s the story masterfully told by Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee field secretary and now journalist Charles Cobb in his challenging and important new narrative, This Nonviolent Stuff’ll Get You Killed: How Guns Made the Civil Rights Movement Possible, which adds to a growing list of important histories that expand what we know about the way organizing had to work in rural communities.

Deal Could Almost Double Number of Black-Owned Television Stations

In what is being hailed as a major boost for black-TV station ownership, Nexstar Broadcasting Group, Inc. said Friday it has agreed to sell three stations to black media entrepreneur Pluria Marshall Jr.

    By: Richard Prince
    Posted: June 8 2014 5:27 PM

Nexstar Broadcasting Group, Inc., said Friday that it had agreed to sell three television stations to black media entrepreneur Pluria Marshall Jr. in a deal that, if approved, would nearly double the tiny number of full-powered African American-owned commercial television stations.

The deal would require a waiver from the Federal Communications Commission, which voted 3-2 in March to bar so-called ” shared services agreements,” in which one station provides services, such as selling advertising, for another.

Nexstar, which said it would guarantee the loans necessary for Marshall to meet the $58.5 million sale price, is proposing such an agreement. However, when the FCC passed its ban on these arrangements, it added language designed to encourage waivers for joint sales agreements that encourage diversity in media ownership.

Marshall has owned radio stations and newspaper properties and is the son of Pluria Marshall, photographer, co-founder of the National Association of Black Journalists and activist who challenged broadcast licenses as chairman of the National Black Media Coalition in the 1970s.

In their announcement, Nexstar and Marshall emphasized that their desire for broadcast diversity drove the deal.

Audra McDonald Makes Tony Award History With Win
NEW YORK June 9, 2014 (AP)
By MARK KENNEDY AP Drama Writer
    Associated Press

Audra McDonald has become the Tony Awards’ most decorated actress.

The singer and actress on Sunday won her sixth Tony for portraying Billie Holiday in “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill,” putting her ahead of five-time winners Angela Lansbury and the late Julie Harris for the most competitive wins by an actress.

The latest win — for best lead actress in a play — also makes McDonald the first grand-slam performance winner. She previously won as best featured actress in a play (“A Raisin in the Sun” and “Master Class”), best lead actress in a musical (“The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess”) and best featured actress in a musical (“Ragtime” and “Carousel”). She also has two Grammys.

She beat Tyne Daly, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Cherry Jones and Estelle Parsons

Virginia Democratic senator Puckett to resign, possibly dooming push to expand Medicaid

By Laura Vozzella June 8 at 7:58 PM

RICHMOND — Republicans appear to have outmaneuvered Gov. Terry McAuliffe in a state budget standoff by persuading a Democratic senator to resign his seat, at least temporarily giving the GOP control of the chamber and possibly dooming the governor’s push to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.

Sen. Phillip P. Puckett (D-Russell) will announce his resignation Monday, effective immediately, paving the way to appoint his daughter to a judgeship and Puckett to the job of deputy director of the state tobacco commission, three people familiar with the plan said Sunday. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

The news prompted outrage among Democrats — and accusations that Republicans were trying to buy the Senate with job offers in order to thwart McAuliffe’s proposal to expand health coverage to 400,000 low-income Virginians.

Del. Scott A. Surovell (D-Fairfax) said Republicans were unable to win the policy argument about Medicaid expansion, so they have resorted to other means.

“It’s astounding to me. The House Republican caucus will do anything and everything to prevent low-income Virginians from getting health care. . . . They figure the only way they could win was to give a job to a state senator,” Surovell said. “At least they can’t offer Terry McAuliffe a job. I hope Terry continues to stand up to these bullies.”

Puckett, a senator since 1998, did not respond to calls seeking comment. Other Republicans denied that Puckett was offered the jobs in exchange for his resignation.

This dude is from the very very red area of the state. If he voted for this, his political career was over. So he might as well get something, cuz if he voted he’d get nothing. The people in his little one stoplight county don’t care if some poor person in Richmond gets health care. They don’t care if they don’t get health care but some nigga in Richmond or Norfolk betta not get it either. And this Russell dude probably feels the same way.

McAuliffe should override all dem and pass his own budget.

    • TresL

A major reason Republicans get away with so much shit in this country can be laid at the feet of sell-out, self-serving, cowardly Democrats.

      • rikyrah

        Dare I say it?
        White people.
Cause the minute this is offered to a Black person, they would realize that they have to live in the same community with the people whose backs they just stabbed. Somebody in church is among the 400,000 people in Virginia who need the Medicaid expansion.

It was awesome. Damn u Tom Cruise for making another movie I absolutely loved it. Soon as I get home I’ll do a full review.

    • Scopedog

I LOVED it. I do admit that I’m probably biased because I loved the source novel “All You Need Is Kill”, but this film was action-packed, funny, and looked amazing. I definitely want to see this again in the theater and I will pick this up when it’s released on Blu-Ray/DVD.

      • lamh36

I agree. I am FAR from a Tom Cruise fan and I’ve never read the book, but I have to admit, this movie had me at the edge of my seat a number of times. And the story seemed really fresh, way fresher than I imagined it would be..

I also liked that even though Tom Cruise was the marquee actor, Emily Blunt was kicking ass and taking names!!!

I’ll def be adding this to my DVD/Blu Ray list along with the last TC movie I loved…MI:Ghost Protocol

        • Scopedog

“I also liked that even though Tom Cruise was the marquee actor, Emily Blunt was kicking ass and taking names!!!”

Yup! She nailed it–that’s exactly how Rita was in the novel. Blunt was certainly one of the film’s highlights.

It’s sad that the movie may not make much stateside, because it’s gotten very positive reviews and the majority of people who have seen it have loved it (even if some, like you, have never read the book). It should do well worldwide, but then again, it’s not the first time that a film I liked didn’t set the US box office on fire. But, like you, this is a must-buy for DVD/Blu-Ray. And I also highly recommend the book “All You Need Is Kill”. It’s one of the best SF novels I’ve read in years.

  • lamh36

Damn I missed the Tony’s. Shoot, I guess I’ll have to settle for clips.
