Joel-McHale-President-Obama-618x400

In case you missed it – enjoy!

The Intro

President Obama

Joel McHale (and they thought he was the safe choice, oh well!)

  • Aquagranny911

Okay, I cut this Joel McHale person off early last night because he
irritated me from the begging with the reference to Gitmo & I was
tired. I watched him all the way through today. I thought he sucked a
small cactus. Yeah he blasted a lot of people but he was way too mean
to be funny on some jokes, his delivery was awful, reading all his jokes
    direct from cue cards, PLEEZE!

Joel totally did not impress me but I am old & may not understand the appeal of someone like him since one of my fav comedians is George Lopez who can zing with the best of them while making you really laugh. Joel certainly was not as good as Wanda Sikes or Stephen Colbert at shooting down the goatfiggers.

    My two pesos….

    • trose1

I thought he did his Talk Soup or shtick. He is a 2 bit comedian. I thought he did ok.

      • Aquagranny911

Doing “OK” is way better than Leno etc. I just didn’t think McHale was great, no offense. I had no clue who this man was & only saw him for the first time today.

Bottom line is our Prez is a hard act to follow & maybe Mr. McHale tried a bit too hard. I’m sure he was way nervous even if he is some comedian I never heard of. I am pretty much off the grid for TV & I am old.

    • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

I agree with you, AG. He had a couple of good one-liners, but for the most part, he was wack. Like you, his GITMO joke annoyed me because it was based on a lie. Joel didn’t do the education.

Veteran Journalists to Start Politics Site for Bloomberg

    By RAVI SOMAIYAMAY 4, 2014

John Heilemann and Mark Halperin, political journalists known for their detailed, gossip-filled books on the past two presidential campaigns, will join Bloomberg in the coming days to start a new site that will focus on American politics and policy.

The new project, Bloomberg Politics, is part of a broader strategy put in place by Justin B. Smith, who was appointed chief executive of Bloomberg Media Group last summer after serving as president of Atlantic Media.

Mr. Heilemann and Mr. Halperin, who are the authors of the best sellers “Game Change” and “Double Down,” are the “epitome of the type of quality journalistic talent that moves seamlessly between different kinds of platforms,” Mr. Smith said in an interview.

They will anchor a daily television program that will also stream online, as well as write news articles and take part in live events. A start date for the site has yet to be set, but will most likely be months away.

The site might also expand to include international coverage, Mr. Smith said. New employees would be hired, though Mr. Smith declined to specify a number. Current Bloomberg reporters and editors will contribute, from Washington and New York.

The hires come amid a bubble for brand-name journalistic talent. Journalists like Ezra Klein, formerly of The Washington Post; Nate Silver, formerly of The New York Times; and Glenn Greenwald, formerly of The Guardian, have been highly sought after to anchor start-up sites. More established companies, like Yahoo — which has hired Katie Couric, among others — are also seeking increased relevance and readership. Ms. Couric, like Mr. Heilemann and Mr. Halperin, also helps with the potentially lucrative demand for online video advertising.

In an interview on Friday, Mr. Smith said his goal at Bloomberg was to build “a portfolio of content brands, born of the web but on different kinds of media platforms.” The brands will focus on topic areas but cut across the various forms of media that Bloomberg offers: television, digital video, print, online, radio and the lucrative subscription financial information terminals that are responsible for 82 percent of its $8.5 billion in annual revenue.

Mr. Heilemann and Mr. Halperin were also political analysts for MSNBC. Though they will continue to appear on the “Morning Joe” show, their departures signify another bump in a difficult period for the cable network. It averaged 112,000 viewers for its total day coverage in April, its lowest total since 2007.

The two men rose to prominence with the books, on the 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns, which were based on hundreds of interviews with political insiders and devoured by readers for their compelling details. “Game Change” was made into a movie by HBO.

“Mark and I have known Josh and Justin for a long time,” Mr. Heilemann said of Josh Tyrangiel, the editor of Bloomberg Businessweek, and Mr. Smith. “This is a chance to do something we’d never be able to do again,” he said. The two plan to “bring our reportorial and storytelling skills to all the platforms.”

They will continue to write the kinds of in-depth stories they are known for, Mr. Halperin said. “We’re long past the point where the conventional wisdom says that people only read short stuff online,” he added.

Other areas of the company will also follow politics, Mr. Smith said. He declined to provide any specifics, but Bloomberg recently hired Chris Rovzar, the digital editor at Vanity Fair. He describes his new job online as “luxury guy for Bloomberg.”

The company had recently lost influential figures in its political coverage. Its executive editor for federal, state and local government coverage, Susan Goldberg, joined National Geographic this year. Another senior editor, Tim Franklin, left around the same time to head the Poynter Institute, a journalism nonprofit organization.

Mike Tackett, a managing editor, left for The New York Times in late 2013; his was one of three departures following accusations that Bloomberg haddeclined to publish an investigative article that explored the financial ties between one of the wealthiest men in China and the families of Chinese leaders.

In the wake of the departures, Bloomberg last week announced a series of leadership changes for its politics coverage. Winnie O’Kelley, a former deputy business editor at The New York Times, was named executive editor. Craig Gordon, once managing editor at Politico, was appointed to that role for Bloomberg. And Jonathan Allen, a former White House bureau chief for Politico, was named as the new Washington bureau chief.

Professors ignore emails from women and minorities at higher rate than white males
    By Scott Kaufman
    Sunday, May 4, 2014 13:58 EDT

A study led by the University of Pennsylvania’s Katherine Milkman suggests that university professors discriminate against women and minorities when choosing which students to mentor.

With the help of Modupe Akinola of Columbia University and Dolly Chugh of New York University, Milkman emailed 6,500 professors from 89 disciplines at the top 259 schools in the United States pretending to be students seeking mentors. The content of these emails did not vary — only the name of the person who sent it.

“The names of the ‘students’ were randomly assigned to signal gender and race (Caucasian, Black, Hispanic, Indian, Chinese),” they wrote, “but their messages were otherwise identical. Our outcome of interest is whether faculty responded to these inquiries.”

    • Aquagranny911

I agree with Miranda about MHP on this specific issue but I think this whole segment was slanted a bit. VP Biden has been an advocate for women for years. He co-wrote & sponsored the “Violence Against Women Act” back in the ’90’s. PBO has stood for women since he was first in office.

To imply that this WH is just NOW standing against the rape of women really irritates me a whole lot. I will give MHP a pass this time but her words, no matter how off hand, will be used over & over against PBO. For this, I will not forgive her.

Sexual violence probes at colleges arise from Obama push on civil rights issues

By Nick Anderson, Published: May 3

What has become a national uprising against the scourge of sexual assault on college campuses started three years ago with a 19-page letter from an obscure agency in Washington.

Sexual violence was not only a crime that could land a perpetrator in jail, the Office for Civil Rights in the Education Department told schools in April 2011. It was also a form of harassment prohibited by federal anti-discrimination law, a declaration that required colleges to take vigorous steps to prevent sexual violence and provide a “prompt and equitable” response whenever cases arose.

The letter from the Obama administration helped encourage survivors of rape and other forms of sexual assault to lodge grievances with the federal government, with widening consequences for higher education.

“It was the first time any administration had called out sexual violence as a civil rights issue,” Catherine E. Lhamon, assistant education secretary for civil rights, said of the letter. “It was a shot across the bow.”

J.J. Redick encountered Donald Sterling’s racism early

Sam Amick, USA TODAY Sports7:19 p.m. EDT May 4, 2014

LOS ANGELES — When the Los Angeles Clippers are old and gray and the time comes to tell their children about the time their basketball world was turned upside down, no two stories will be the same.

Each has his own vantage point. Each has his own emotions. Each has his own response.

But the story about J.J. Redick and his surreal first season with the Clippers captures the Donald Sterling experience as well as anyone’s. At 29 years old and having made the calculated choice as a free agent last summer to come play for coach Doc Rivers and this talented team, Redick was exposed to the Sterling dysfunction from the start when his sign-and-trade deal to come to Los Angeles nearly fell apart after his four-year, $27-million deal had been agreed upon.

One of the reasons? Allegedly Sterling, the man whose racist comments sparked this whole furor, didn’t think a white player could possibly be good enough to make that kind of money.

    more here: http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nba/playoffs/2014/05/04/donald-sterling-jj-redick-los-angeles-clippers-owner-racism-ban/8698265/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&dlvrit=206567

Democrats Should Boycott Benghazi Committee, Schiff Says

Democrats should boycott a select committee that House Speaker John Boehnerplans to form to investigate the 2012 attacks on a U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, Representative Adam Schiff said.

The California Democrat, who sits on the House intelligence committee, said today there’s no reason for Democrats to participate in another probe of the Benghazi attacks that’s aimed partly at undermining former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s potential presidential bid in 2016.

“It’s a colossal waste of time,” Schiff said on “Fox News Sunday.”

Frequently cited as the greatest boxer of all time, Robinson’s performances in the welterweight and middleweight divisions prompted sportswriters to create “pound for pound” rankings, where they compared fighters regardless of weight. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990. Robinson was 85–0 as an amateur with 69 of those victories coming by way of knockout, 40 in the first round.

GOP candidate was once a female impersonator
    Posted: Saturday, May 3, 2014 7:00 am

Steve Wiles, a Republican state Senate candidate who supports North Carolina’s constitutional amendment against same-sex marriage, once worked as a female impersonator at a gay nightclub in Winston-Salem and was gay at the time, according to a co-owner of the nightclub and a former employee.Wiles, 34, was in his early 20s when he worked at the now-defunct nightclub, Club Odyssey, according to co-owner Randy Duggins and former employee Gray Tomlinson.

“He is Mona Sinclair,” Duggins said, referring to Wiles’ female persona.

Wiles’ responses over the past three weeks have ranged from categorical denial to tacit admission.

“I have already apologized to the people who matter most to me for the things I did when I was young,” Wiles said this week, declining to clarify for what he has apologized. The comment was made in the last of three separate interviews. At first, Wiles denied the claim.

“That’s not me,” Wiles said three weeks ago, referring to Mona Sinclair. Wiles responded “no” when asked whether he was gay. This week, Wiles’ campaign website, Facebook page and Twitter handle were taken down.

Could Young Blood Be the Fountain of Youth?
Researchers want to know whether young blood will help reverse effects of aging in humans like it did with mice
    By Daniel Politi

Reversing aging has long seemed to be the stuff of science fiction. Now a trio of studies out Sunday suggest the answer could be relatively simple: blood from the young. It may sound like the beginning of a B horror movie, but three studies have discovered that pumping blood from young mice into old mice can reverse some of the effects of aging. And the benefits are broad: “Infusions of young blood reversed age-related declines in memory and learning, brain function, muscle strength, and stamina,” details the Guardian. Old mice suddenly seemed as if they were recharged when they got new blood and were able to navigate mazes more quickly, for example. How long the positive effects last remains an open question as none of the studies looked into that issue, although it would appear to be a few weeks.iResearchers want to know whether young blood will help reverse effects of aging in humans like it did with mice

    – – —-Abdul-Jabbar: ‘More whites believe in ghosts than they do in racism’- –
    – – —- -Former NBA superstar Kareem Abdul-Jabbar said Sunday “more whites believe in ghosts than they do in racism.”

Racism is a systemic problem, he said on ABC’s “This Week.” Abdul-Jabbar penned an op-ed last week for Time Magazine discussing race and the racist history of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling. Anyone paying attention to Sterling’s past, Abdul-Jabbar said, shouldn’t be surprised by comments made in private. For example, the Justice Department sued Sterling in 2006 for housing discrimination. And Sterling reportedly said, “Black tenants smell and attract vermin.”

Racism is “something that’s still part of our culture and people hold onto these ideas and practices,” Abdul-Jabbar said.

And the NBA, he said, has a responsibility to monitor the “temperature” of racial discrimination. “The NBA has to keep the issue in people’s minds when it’s appropriate,” he said.

    – – —Queen Njinga Stood Up to the Portuguese Invaders of Angola

    – – – —Queen Njinga is considered one of the most important women in the history of the African continent.

    — -For centuries, black Brazilians and Portuguese descendants of Africa around the globe have danced and sung in celebration of a woman known as Queen Njinga. Their Angolan ancestors carried her name from the African colony of Angola, where today she is revered as one of the 25 most important women in the history of the continent.

The Angolan government, 350 years after Queen Njinga’s death,is commemorating her life and her legacy as a revered freedom fighter of the 17th century. And the world will finally hear the story of this extraordinary woman who stood up in the face of European colonization.

Born in early 1582 to Mbandi a Ngola Kiluanji, the king of Ndongo, in Angola, Njinga was the second of four children by Kiluanji’s favorite concubine. Her birth occurred a mere seven years after Portuguese invaders had begun their conquest of her grandfather’s kingdom. In fact, the very year she was born, Portuguese troops arrived at the royal capital, and the entire royal household had to flee to one of the several capitals. Njinga spent her childhood and teenage years watching Portuguese invaders devastate her homeland. As a young woman, she joined the resistance and fought alongside her nation’s troops.</i>
