Sunday Afternoon Thread: Rakin’ In Tha Dough

The September fundraising numbers are in, and it’s great news for President Obama:

  • Raised $181 Million combined with the DNC
  • More than 1.8 Million people donated in September
  • 567,044 of those donations came from first-time donors
  • 98% of donations were $250 or less
  • Average donation was $53
  • Since the campaign launched in April 2011, 3, 922, 420 have donated to help re-elect President Obama
  • Surpassed 10 Million individual donations in 2012

And remember when the media started the lie that PBO’s campaign said their goal was to raised $1 billion? And then the media tried to clown Team Obama because they thought they wouldn’t reach $1 billion? Well, guess what Politico (the main ones pushing the $1B lie) reported:

Though the campaign spent months discouraging talk that the Obama Victory Fund would raise $1 billion, the effort is close. By the end of August, Obama had raised $766 million and September’s contributions bring that total to $947 million.

That’s right, PragObots! President Obama just might raise $1B after all!

But PBO can’t make history without our help, so don’t forget to donate to the “Make It Rain On The Obama-Biden 2012 Campaign” fund!

So only 53 mil to get to that 1 Bil?? I do believe it’ll happen!

She actually has a reputation for being less than a nice person…way less. Could explain the political attraction to someone like Mitt Romney.

      • lamh35

bipolar or not she is still clueless. as GN has said, I’ve also read about her having a nasty attitude.

being bipolar does not excuse it.

also I kinda don’t understand what her being ipolar has to do with anything. my mother is bipolar, and NOT seeking treatment (though I’d like her to) but she’s got all her senses, being bipolar doesn’t make u less able to criticize cluelessness

  • GN

Good catch by AP; now that we’re actually entertaining the SUBSTANCE of what was said at the debate, AP reports that Spain just told Mittens keep their name out his mouth:

Mitt Romney Spain Quip Adds To Foreign Policy Troubles

“I don’t want to go down the path of Spain,” Romney said Wednesday night during the first presidential debate. He argued that government spending under Obama has reached 42 percent of the U.S. economy, a figure comparable with America’s NATO ally. “I want to go down the path of growth that puts Americans to work.”

[GN: the entirety of the above debate point by Mittens is a lie, willful misstatement at best]

The remark was Romney’s latest to cause international offense during a campaign that much of the world is closely monitoring.

No one contests that Spain’s situation is dire, its economy in deep recession and unemployment hovering around 25 percent. But Spain’s level of government spending is actually low by European standards, and significantly less than Germany and Scandinavian countries with far healthier economic prospects. Spain’s woes were chiefly caused by the collapse of a property bubble that had fueled more than a decade of booming economic growth.

Spanish reaction to Romney was swift.

“What I see is ignorance of what is reality, but especially of the potential of the Spanish economy,” said Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria.

If this were just one thing he got wrong, I could perhaps see a pass being given, but almost ALL of Romney’s remarks were disastrous on substance; how the fuck is he being portrayed as coherent? But glad the story is at least starting to be told.

    • AxelFoley

Only added two new shows, Elementary (cause I’m a Sherlock Holmes fan from way back) and I’m kinda giving the Mindy Project on FOX a chance. Other than that, I trying to go back to shows I’d started watching then fell out on like Once Upon A Time and maybe Revenge.

I’ve already got a full plate of returning shows in my DVR queue so adding more wasn’t a big priority

        • Joy

Ooh, I love all things Sherlock as well. “Elementary” is the only new show I’ve added to my watch list. The only other shows I’m watching are “Once Upon A Time”, “Copper” and “Luther”.

This story to me is huge in that Romney has lamely tried to disavow his 47% comments (after doubling down on them), but that same line of thinking is mirrored exactly by his runningmate. Turns out that Paul Ryan has his own 47% tape, except that to Ryan, it’s 60% of the country that are “takers” and “dependent” rather than 47%:

Paul Ryan: 60 Percent Of Americans Are ‘Takers,’ Not ‘Makers’

Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan said in 2010 that 60 percent of Americans receive more financial benefits from the government than they pay in taxes, making them “takers,” rather than “makers,” according to a 2010 video of Ryan speaking with Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.).

“Right now about 60 percent of the American people get more benefits in dollar value from the federal government than they pay back in taxes,” Ryan said. “So we’re going to a majority of takers versus makers in America and that will be tough to come back from that. They’ll be dependent on the government for their livelihoods [rather] than themselves.”

On substance, these guys couldn’t be worse news. Their math is ridiculous; their ideas about dependency are ridiculous as well as hypocritical as applied to them both (Ryan collected social security death benefits; Mittens bragged about getting billions in fed assistance for the Olympics, not to mention the $$ in pension obligations his “harvested” Bain companies foisted off to the federal government). This is the content, in addition to the vote fraud and voter suppression stories noted by trose, that the lefty media needs to get on top of.

    • rikyrah

the first clip was of him saying that 30% of Americans were moochers.

Now, they got him on tape saying SIXTY PERCENT are moochers?

      • AxelFoley

        Yeah, talk about doubling down.

      • GN

Yup–both he and Mittens pulled numbers out their asses, but the sentiment in terms of deriding a large part of the country as “takers” is there. They can’t sleaze out of this shit.

Mitt Romney is worth $250 million. Why so little?

By William D. Cohan, Published: October 5

Mitt Romney is indisputably a very rich man. And if he is elected president on Nov. 6, he will become one of the wealthiest people ever to hold the office.

But exactly how wealthy is Romney? The figure that gets tossed around is $250 million in net worth — meaning the total value of his assets, financial and others, minus any debts

It’s a big number, but frankly, it seems low. Given the industry in which he made his fortune (private equity), the era when he made it (the 1980s and 1990s) and the wealth of his peers in that business (mostly billionaires), Romney should be worth a good bit more than that.

    Why isn’t he?

No surprise, Romney has not made it easy to figure out the precise size of his fortune, and any inferences drawn from the available data are necessarily speculative — yet they still, I think, say something about the man who would be president.

We know that Romney’s fortune derives in large part from his founding in 1984 of Bain Capital, one of the premier private-equity firms in the world, which he ran for the next 15 years or so, during a boom time for the industry. Among Bain’s most successful investments are those in well-known companies such as Staples, Domino’s Pizza, Dunkin’ Donuts and the Weather Channel. Others include lesser-known enterprises such as Experian, an information-services company that Bain bought (with Thomas H. Lee Company, another Boston-based buyout firm) for $1 billion in 1996 and sold months laterfor a profit of $700 million; and Seat Pagine Gialle, an Italian yellow-pages business whose investors, including Bain, made $1 billion in profits after two years.

    • Miranda

You don’t send $45 mil of your own money on your campaign and only be worth $250mil. Romney is worth a bil.

  • aleth

My mind cannot fardom how a liar is declared a winner! I don’t get it. I don’t get why polls move for a liar. Wow I swear anyone that does not believe in the exclusive white priviledge does not live in reality. Imagine if Obama lied like that?

A liar wins in America??? Are we that stupid? And can we trade some of these white males alleged liberals ex-GOP back to the GOP?

    • AxelFoley

They can all go straight to hell. And they better not stop at “Go”.

    • GN

      This is why:

      Nate Silver‏@fivethirtyeight:
IMO maybe too much focus on Obama’s bad performance at debate as opposed to Romney’s very good one.

To much of our national media, facts, reality, and truth don’t matter at all. It’s all about PR and marketing, and they feed this to the population. They did this to Gore in 2000 as well, painting him as character deficient at very little provocation while the real character deficient got a pass for lying. It is what it is. All that we have is us.

      • Ebogan63

Notice it’s all about ‘performance’ not the fact that this azzhole lied his butt off and ran from his position.

        • GN

They don’t give a shit about truth, substance, or policy coherence.

          • AxelFoley

Yup. Nate Silver, Chuck Todd. Both of them were money during the ’08 election with their number-crunching. Then they came up and sold out.

      • AxelFoley

        CMB! We all we got!

    • GN

But aleth, remember that there’s a metric ton of bullshit going on right now too:

@fivethirtyeight How can you accept the validity of a poll showing Romney winning 57% of black voters in Colorado?

That poll was used as one of the bases of a narrative showing Romney’s “strong momentum.” Lots and lots of lying going on right now between the Romney camp and the national media, and the lefty media infrastructure is MIA.

      • Ebogan63

They are too busy thinkin that that bullshit debate ‘win’ will cost the election for PBO when nothing can be further from the truth(lefty media and some idiot commenters’ Rmoney won with the pundits, which doesn’t mean shit, but some folks need to pick another hobby, cuz politics ain’t for them. I spent the day doing data entry for OFA, not bullshitting on blogs!

        • trose1

I will not be surprised if romney wins. Is anyone polling these “safe” blue states?

          • AxelFoley

Oh please believe, he ain’t winning shit. PBO got this, and we got his back. I promise you.

        • GN

          No need for panic:

Our new Virginia President poll is Obama 50, Romney 47. Just a slight shift toward Romney from 51/46 3 weeks ago

Nate Silver is a sellout. Years ago when he was on dkos he would have laughed ANY poll showing a Republican winning almost 60% of black voters in a national presidential election out of the room. Now, he incorporates such bullshit into his “analysis” and then turns to selling his fucking book. I think that people should not believe the hype. I don’t want to be dismissive, but I’m much preferring to be Team Obama tonight than Team Romney, period.

          • Ebogan63

Friday was a strong day for Romney in our VA polling, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday were about par for the course of our work there this yr

Virginia independents think Romney won the debate 71-17, but splitting their votes 46/46. Shows limited impact of debates…—
            PublicPolicyPolling (@ppppolls) October 08, 2012

People need to stop with the debate bullshit and GOTV.

          • JojoRaze

So basically, the debate separated the Republican-leaning independents, from the Dem leaning ones. I still think R-money will win NC, Indiana and Colorado, but he won’t win OH or Florida.

          • Ebogan63

Could be wrong, don’t see Rmoney winning CO,and him being tied in NC while outspending PBO 2-1 is not good news.

          • JojoRaze

I agree. What I’m saying is that OH and FL are the prizes and Mittens isn’t going to win them. I’m doing the maps on 27towin and if PBO wins FL & OH and loses every other swing state, he still wins.

          • AxelFoley

I’m thinking PBO takes FL, CO, OH, and NC.

    – – – —A new report finds that President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign has run more than twice as many TV ads in nine key states as has the campaign of his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney.

The Nielsen Co. said Friday that Obama’s campaign had run nearly 230,000 ads in Nevada, Colorado, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire from the beginning of the year through early September, compared with about 87,000 for Romney. All are considered battlegrounds this year, with both candidates competing heavily in those states for votes.

The biggest disparity was in Ohio.

Obama’s campaign ran just over 51,000 ads in the state compared to nearly 17,500 for Romney. No Republican has ever won the White House without carrying Ohio, and recent polls show Obama ahead there.

  • CBS News Covers For Romney Campaign’s Tax Doublespeak

CBS chief political correspondent John Dickerson disputed President Obama’s description of Mitt Romney’s tax plan as a “$5 trillion tax cut” because one of Romney’s advisers suggested he would reduce the size of his proposed tax cuts if he could not pay for them. But Dickerson is ignoring the fact that Romney running mate Paul Ryan suggested last week that Romney would not reduce the size of his tax cuts because lowering taxes is his highest priority.

During a panel discussion on the presidential debate on Face The Nation, Dickerson said that it was unfair to accuse Romney of being dishonest about his tax plan. Dickerson explained that a top Romney economic adviser “said we have two goals here. One is deficit reduction, the other is reducing marginal rates. If those come in conflict our primary goal is deficit reduction and the marginal rates might not go down as much.”

Arkansas Republican: Slavery was ‘blessing in disguise’ that ‘rewarded’ blacks with U.S. citizenship

A Republican member of the Arkansas state senate’s self-published memoir claims that for black people in America, slavery was a “blessing in disguise,” that, if they were physically hardy enough to survive it, “someday be rewarded with citizenship in the greatest nation ever established upon the face of the Earth.” According to the Arkansas Times, Rep. Jon Hubbard, of Jonesboro, included these thought and others in his book, Letters to the Editor, Confessions of a Frustrated Conservative, which was initially written about and excerpted by writer Michael Cook at Talk Business.

    – —Elizabeth Warren Leads by 5 as Scott Brown Spins his Wheels Towards Defeat – —

    – ——Sen. Scott Brown’s personal attacks are getting him nowhere against Elizabeth Warren, as the Democrat continues to lead the Massachusetts Senate race 50%-45%.

    – —The latest Western New England University Polling Institute survey found that the Warren/Brown debates haven’t changed much of anything, as the Democratic challenger continues to lead the incumbent 50%-45%. In the previous survey, Warren led by 6 points, 50%-44%. Even though respondents gave Brown a 55% job approval rating, and he holds a large lead with Independents, the incumbent Republican is still losing.

The reason why Brown is losing is because he has a 56% unfavorable rating with Democrats. The senator also has a job approval rating with women (46%) that is nine points lower than his overall job approval rating. Warren’s approval rating with women is 59%.

Scott Brown’s biggest problem is that he is a Republican running in a state where President Obama is popular, and Democrats outnumber Republicans 3 to 1. The numbers suggest that voters don’t dislike Brown, and against any other opponent he would probably have no trouble being reelected, but so far Warren is proving herself to be a huge challenge to the incumbent.

Elizabeth Warren has shown herself to be a highly formidable candidate, and one of the best Democrats on the ballot in any race in this country. Both candidates have seen their negative ratings go up, but Warren has a natural appeal to the majority of Democrats, and her overwhelming support with women is forming a coalition that Brown is having a difficult time overcoming.

    – —Big Bird Looking for Job Under Romney – —

    – – – –October 7, 2012 After the first Presidential Debate we know that Mitt Romney said he would fire Big Bird which upset millions of kids across the United States. Romney’s plan to gut PBS Public Broadcasting TV which receives funding will not put even the smallest dent in the deficit.

Instead of regulating Wall Street as President Obama points out, Mitt Romney wants to regulate Sesame Street.

Poor Big Bird, he’s unemployed under Mitt Romney’s plans, and Elmo is not tickled either. – – – – –

Final review of Steel Magnolias…B+. If I hadn’t seen the original movie, I may feel differently. But it wasn’t bad and it wasn’t great, but Phyllicia Rashad and Alfre Woodard were stand outs. Some of the more powerful scenes just aren’t the same when you know they are coming and you know what to expect. But if I hadn’t seen the original, I would bet I would think it was good.

    – —-Getting out the red with Elmo – –

    – — – –President Barack Obama on Sunday night mocked Mitt Romney by singling out his remarks about PBS in last Wednesday’s presidential debate. Obama was speaking at a campaign event at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.

    His PBS jibes at Romney:

“When he was asked what he’d actually do to cut spending, he said he’d go after public television. So for all you moms and kids out there, don’t worry, somebody is finally cracking down on Big Bird — cracking down on him. Elmo has made a run for the border. Governor Romney plans to let Wall Street run wild again, but he’s bringing the hammer down on Sesame Street.”
