Sunday Afternoon Thread: The Second Time Around….So Much Better

  • MsKitty

The girls are cracking me up, they are so done with all the hoopla.

    • Aquagranny911

There is nothing like a teenage for eye rolling at “hoopla” involving their parents.

    • JojoRaze

I noticed it too. Michelle is beaming and thinking ‘There’s my man taking that oath again. Yes!’ But Sasha and Malia are like, ‘I wanna go talk with my friends and I have no time for this. But check out the side eye Malia gives Roberts when he said Hussein. Her look was like ‘Why you gotta say Hussein, though? You could have said H.’ So they do care, but they are like ‘It’s a four-day weekend. I just wanna chill and this inaugural stuff is cutting in on my time.’

      • Aquagranny911

I did love that side eye from Malia but I was thinking that, she was thinking: “Don’t fig this one up, Judge!”

        • MsKitty

I could hear RuPaul’s voice intoning “Good luck, and don’t fuck it up!”

        • JojoRaze

She was doing that too. She was tracking Roberts lines and then get dad repeating them. She was making sure Roberts didn’t mess it up.

    • GreenLadyHere

This video is wonderful. I love our First Family

  • Alma98

YEAH! Thanks for playing my song Miranda, I wish they would play it at the inaugural festivities.

  • AxelFoley

    Shalamar!

You done did it now, Miranda

  • LV

Dang! Right when I almost had my uncontrollable wide smile with sh%$t eating grin under some minor control from the election, its all back. I need serious help. I can’t go out in public like this. I live in Texas. HELP!

    • conlakappa

Ha! Some neighbors had an inauguration party next week and a couple of them anticipate crying again tomorrow. One was getting teary talking about how important it was that he was re-elected. She is a white lesbian an we live in Maryland. She gives some credit to him for our marriage equality law passing and generally thinks the world of the First Family. Her partner was as pissed as people her about white so-called feminists talking smack about the First Lady.

      • Aquagranny911

Dang! Two of our very best friends are a white lesbian couple. They think the world of PBO & worked their butts off for OFA. They adore Michelle and get as excited as we do here about her activities, her clothes etc but especially admire “the fine example she is setting for our young women.” They have a twelve year old daughter.

        • conlakappa

Indeed. But the MSM does its damnedest to dig outnthe haters. Cannot investigate Miffed’s tax records but can cue up the disenchanted quicker than they cant type the.

Speaking of which, Tavis decided to do an editorial hit piece on the President on CBS Sunday Morning. Someone else wrote a piece in the WashPost and, gosh, he and Tavis used the same language about the President not following Dr. King in addressing poverty and militarism. Now an ordinary sentient being would think ending two wars and calling for cuts in military spending go a long way to, you know, ending militarism. And we have addressed before the actions the President has undertaken to help lower-income people. It was just pathetic.

          • Aquagranny911

It has been said often here: “haters gonna hate”
I do try to avoid most of MSM & pundits because I need to mind my BP.

One thing I have found is that being out & about in my community & among people I know is that I get a much better perspective on what ‘real’ people think & do.

I know we got to keep hitting back at the scumbag liars & sensationalist MSM but I do get weary.

One thing that does comfort me, in my very small pond most say they would trust Brewer before any of the media.

May I say that is rather frightening!

    • Aquagranny911

Just keep smiling and people will only wonder what you been up to, lol.

President Obama’s 2nd Term Begins Today!

Posted on 01/20/2013 at 11:34 am by Mr. Brink

When he rode into town on a white horse named Joe Biden back in 2009, Barack Obama was staring down the perfect storm of financial sector collapse, two wars, monumental debt, and a demoralized national identity– just getting started.

Through a series of parliamentary showdowns, very public reckonings, and negotiated hostage standoffs, President Obama has quietly proven himself worthy of a hero’s parade, even if it is just an inauguration ceremony.

Over the past four years, we’ve seen the best the American people have to offer by way of leadership in President Barack Obama. It’s been a grueling endeavor, testing the hearts and minds of critics and allies alike. There’s much more that still needs to be done, but if the past four years is any indication, the next four should continue to set the standard by which all future presidents are measured.

    An Armed John Lewis?

    by BooMan
Sun Jan 20th, 2013 at 02:20:34 PM EST

Rush Limbaugh recently said that John Lewis would not have suffered a fractured skull at Selma if he had been armed. That is a profound misunderstanding of just about everything that could be understood about Bloody Sunday or the Civil Rights Movement more generally. John Lewis’s fractured skull, while not exactly the plan, was the key to the success of Selma.

    …………………………………………………

John Lewis’s skull fracture hastened the passage of the Voting Rights Act, which may not have passed otherwise for many years. His personal courage and sacrifice are so immense, and so many people are indebted to him, including me, that Rush Limbaugh really shouldn’t utter his name, unless it is to pay him the deep respect that he deserves.

To call him the greatest living American would not be hyperbole, for who would we put before him?

He accomplished through peaceful means what years of armed struggle would never have achieved. What’s unusual is that, unlike others in his category, like Socrates and Jesus and Lincoln and Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., he lived to tell about it. He’s still serving in Congress, doing his little part each day. But he is so much more than a congressman. He’s a giant who doesn’t get the credit he deserves simply because he wasn’t martyred and because he’s too humble to demand it.

For my POU Fashionistas, WWD reports FLOTUS wore Reed Krakoff for today’s ceremony!

I predict she’ll wear Laura Smalls for the public swearing-in ceremony and Michael Kors for her inaugural gown.

    • Camille

She looked so sweet, so beautiful. She glowed and the dress was simple but gorgeous. And the hair completed the perfect, classic look that will endure for posterity.

Ironic that she stuns in a dress by the same designer of the ugly bird T-shirt Anne Romney wore and bombed completely! Ha!

Obamas To Worship At Metropolitan AME Church On Martin Luther King and Inauguration Day

By DARLENE SUPERVILLE 01/20/13 11:23 AM ET EST

President Barack Obama worshipped and celebrated the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Sunday at the historic Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Obama and first lady Michelle Obama attended services with their daughters Malia and Sasha at the downtown Washington church.

Introducing Mrs. Obama, the Rev. Marie P. Braxton said, “I’d like to say that she is the first lady of the world.” The pastor invited congregants to sing “Happy Birthday,” to the first lady, who celebrated her 49th on Thursday, and Mrs. Obama stood and waved.

With the first family were Obama’s sister, Maya Soetoro-ng, and Mrs. Obama’s mother and brother, Marian and Craig Robinson.

    ………………………………………………………………………….

The church, which is celebrating its 175th anniversary, was draped in the reds, greens and golds found in African Kente cloth. The program said Sunday’s service was a dual celebration of Obama’s second inaugural and of the anniversary of King’s birthday.

Word must have spread that the first family was coming: Pews were full, and the back cover of the program was printed with an official photo of the Obamas. Church-goers rose to their feet, and those in the balcony leaned over to catch a glimpse, as the Obamas entered from a back room as the gospel choir continued to sing. The Obamas sat in the second row, and Secret Service agents sat in the third row.

I know you all don’t give a damn but:
Miss America unsure about attending Inauguration
By MESFIN FEKADU | Associated Pres

WASHINGTON (AP) — Mallory Hagan says her first week as Miss America has been amazing, but she’s not sure she’s going to Inauguration Day because of the weather.

Hagan said in an interview Saturday that it may be too cold to attend President Barack Obama’s public swearing in ceremony Monday. She says she has a ticket and is “in the middle of deciding if she’ll go” because “it’s going to be freezing.”

Hagan spoke at an event for OurTime.org, which featured will.i.am and John Legend.

Hagan won the Miss America title last week. The 23-year-old was born in Alabama, but moved to New York at 18. She was named Miss New York last year and lives in Brooklyn.

She says she feels “overwhelmed, excited, humbled” after having the crown for a week.

    • MsKitty

She’s probably been nonstop since last week and pretty close to being fried, so I ain’t mad at her. Just hope she gives the ticket to somebody instead of holding on to it.

      • TyrenM

Fair enough. But if you’ve been voted to represent America, I think you should have your ass at the Inauguration and smile/chatter your teeth ’til u can’t anymore.

        • conlakappa

And if you are representing New York, please don’t act like you are unused to cold weather.

          • AxelFoley

            Bingo.

And it ain’t like she had to pay for it.

          • JojoRaze

She’s originally from Alabama, though, and only moved to NYC last year or so. So maybe she’s an undercover teabagger.

          • conlakappa

Right, I know she is a transplant so that is why I said representing. She is in NY now. She could also just say she doesn’t agree with the President’s politics. But that might be too adult.

      • Aquagranny911

Me! Me! Oh never mind I’m too old & live in AZ….

    • Aquagranny911

Come’ on now….its gonna be cold…big freaking deal. The low expected tomorrow is 25 degrees, not 25 below 0. She can survive that dammit.

      She’s from Alabama. Enough said.

” you know it’s almost comical, the laundry list that we can talk about that 60 percent of White folk voted for Romney.”

I agreed with her, but told her, ‘ but, he still won’.

President Obama memorabilia hangs on the walls at the Hyde Park Hair Salon behind barber Ishmael Coye and three-year-old Bryson White shortly before the President took the oath of office to officially start his second term on January 20. The President would get his hair cut at The Hyde Park Hair Salon, which is near his Chicago home, before he was elected to the White House.

    – – – -Joe Scarborough: Republicans Only Kept House Majority Because Of Gerrymandering – —

    – – -MSNBC host and former Republican Congressman Joe Scarborough admitted on Sunday that Republicans only kept their majority in the House of Representatives as a result of gerrymandering, noting that the GOP received less votes than Democrats in the 2012 election. Scarborough argued that Republicans must prevent radical ultra-conservative voices from dominating the party’s message and pointed out that the GOP is already losing electoral ground among voters who view it as too extreme and out of touch with middle class Americans:

    — – – – – SNIP – —
    – – As this article I was referencing mentioned, we actually got a minority of votes nationwide in House races. It was just gerrymandering from 2010 that gave us the majority.

    Watch it:

    — – — Indeed, a recent Republican State Leadership Committee report boasted that the only reason the GOP controls the House of Representatives is because state legislatures gerrymandered congressional districts in blue states. “Controlling the redistricting process in these states would have the greatest impact on determining how both state legislative and congressional district boundaries would be drawn,” the report reads.

Young students reflect on growing up with Obama as president

As President Barack Obama prepares to take the oath of office for a second time, the country is once again examining his impact as a leader. In some schools across the country, educators still look to Obama as a role model for their young students to look up to.

At Friendship Woodridge Elementary and Middle School in Northeast D.C., eighth grader Parker Wilson remembers Obama’s first victory in 2008.

“On his first term when he first got elected, honestly, I did care but I didn’t know the importance,” Wilson said of his time as a fourth grader. “I thought there were other black presidents. But over the course of the years, I realized ‘Wow, he’s the first black president,’ and that motivated me a lot in school.”

NEW ORLEANS — Starting Feb. 1 Louisiana will stop offering hospice care services to most patients on medicaid.

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals is eliminating the service to families in the state due to state budget cuts.

    Critics are up in arms.

—-Harry Reid Will Urge Senate To Tackle Immigration Reform, Gun Control – —

    – – — -Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid isn’t letting the intense partisanship in Congress temper his expectations for the coming year and is planning an agressive agenda ranging from immigration and gun control to education and the economy.

On Tuesday, Reid will formally outline his agenda with a series of “privileged” measures he expects to take up over the next two years, according to Democratic aides.
    – -The list of bills isn’t an outline of what Reid thinks can actually become law: for example, the House Republican majority has indicated reform to gun laws would not win approval. Rather, the list is more a declaration of those issues the Senate’s Democratic majority values most highly.

    Congrats Baltimore and San Francisco.
Big up to Shannon Sharpe for calling out NE Coach Belichek for being a punk after losing. He sends out a defensive player for post-game interview. Sharpe called him a poor sport and said this move makes it easy to root against the Patriots.

Never liked Belichek or NE b/c of their better-than-thou attitude. Their hubris is what always gets them losses.

Obama weighs in on his wife’s hair, says he likes her bangs

(Reuters) – President Barack Obama, who began his second term on Sunday, weighed in on what he facetiously said was the most “significant” event of the weekend: his wife’s new hairstyle.

First lady Michelle Obama, a Harvard law graduate known as much for her sharp fashion sense as her fight to curb obesity, revealed a new hairstyle recently that features bangs. The new hairdo has attracted a lot of attention.

Speaking at a reception with supporters the night before giving his inaugural address, Obama said he liked the look.

“First of all, I love Michelle Obama. And to address the most significant event of this weekend, I love her bangs,” Obama said to laughter and cheers from the crowd.

“She looks good. She always looks good,” he said.

    – — – -There was also a touch of Chicago flavor, as Cannon introduced a pair of groups he said the first lady recommended — the youth choir Soul Children of Chicago and Black Violin, an African-American duo who combine classical violin and contemporary music. The two performed an uptempo version of The Beatles’ “Come Together” that had the crowd on its feet, after which the choir performed a gospel number that seemed to resonate in the hall as much as — or in the case of some of the parents, more than — the pop acts that preceded them.

But while there was a little “church” in the proceedings, and some moving performances, including from the cast of Glee, the night belonged to the kids.
