Sunday Afternoon Thread: What Are You Hiding Mitt?

Ben Labolt, National Press Secretary for OFA, has some questions concerning Mitt Romney’s offshore bank accounts and tax returns.

  • AxelFoley

    Oops, wrong site. 😉

  • Rhoda

LMAO! Ben Labolt is full of win.

The New Obama Typeface: Revolution Gothic
A reader points out that President Barack Obama’s new typeface is Revolution Gothic, a style inspired by retro Cuban propaganda posters. Who vets the fonts? (Obama press secretary Ben LaBolt emails: “Your GOP operative should have had the courtesy to stay sober before noon, and BuzzFeed should go back to labeling cat slideshows.”)

    • Miranda

I saw that yesterday and LMAO

    • Should I send Zeke Miller some ice to help with the swelling from that bitch slap?

      • Miranda

You need to send it to Ben Smith! “go back to labeling cat slideshows”…………….damn if he didn’t just call Buzzfeed nothing but an irrelevant speck on the web!

  • Dey ain’t playing with dis chump. He’s getting set up from all angles. The minute he addresses one they bring up ten more. The scary part is Team Obama is still warming up.

    • Miranda

When I was in middle school, our 7 and 8th grade basketball team had 4 guys over 6’3. Back then, you could dunk during warmups.. all of the schools in the adjacent counties had 7th and 8th grade teams too. Imagine the faces of the other teams as they would watch those 4 line up and dunk. Needless to say, we were undefeated and that team competed regularly in the class 3A state finals during high school.

That’s the expression at Romney campaign headquarters right now. They know the beatdown is coming, and all the pep talking in the world and their sassin cheerleaders will not stop it.

      • conlakappa

That about sums it up. They are getting a faceful of knees whenever they even think they’re near the basket. How soon before they fan themselves with hankies and claim that Team O is just not being gentlemanly?

        • Town

Ann Romney already said last week that Obama’s strategy is to “Kill Romney” and that’s not the proper way to run a campaign.

          • conlakappa

He sent the wilting, hothouse flower out. I’m talking about his official campaign spokesperson. A dude. Miss Ann wasn’t even engaged in the last campaign, sticking to the script of her being too delicate to get involved.

          • Town

I’m convinced more than ever that Ann is behind his presidential run, Ann wants this a whole lot more than he. She ain’t going down without a fight. Don’t let the flower petals fool ya.

          • conlakappa

We’ll agree to disagree. I think the Wilting Flower routine is the Real Ann–they are just trying to prop her up to seem stronger than she is because the First Lady has such a strong personality and persona. She’s Miss Ann 2.0: Blonder and Wordier. Just as the President has reinvented the model, so has Michelle.

          • Town

There’s a viciousness seeping out of Miss Ann that betrays her Delicate Flower routine. As she appears more and more she will become more and more unlikeable, like Palin. Count on it. Women can detect a nasty bitch from a mile away and Ann Romney is a nasty bitch.

          • conlakappa

I am a woman and have a fairly strong meter for such behavior as well. Like I said, I’m agreeing to disagree. She’s dumb like Palin and unlikeable. I think for any potential R candidate’s wife, they are foundering to find out how she should be presented. We saw that with Ms. Moneybags–she was forced to campaign for a husband she hasn’t lived with. Then she was supposed to be talking about herself, uncharted territory for a non-recovering addict. Then she had to talk about how manly he is while allowing herself to be pawed in public by him. Ridiculous.

          • GreenLadyHere

            HEEY TOWN. ***BIG HUG***

Ann Romney is a nasty bitch.– –

            ***fist bump** LOL.
            THANK U 4 your KIND WORDS. :>)

          • Rhoda

I think he has HUGE daddy issues; like GWB did and Rove & Cheney used that to lead W around the nose and I think Ann is using his issues to push him into another run. She REALLY wants the White House too; that it’s our time stuff came from her. Between his Daddy issues and his religion; Ann is pressing his buttons to go out and win this thing. But she’s stuck pushing a loser.

ETA: This is most clear when Mittens gets to the why do you want to be President question. He can’t answer it. And that bull about how they decided to run after they saw POTUS’ failures is transparently false. The sense of entitlement reeks with them.

          • She let the cat out of the bag. That was a cry for help and I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if she weren’t echoing exactly what her husband told her.

            Mitt: Honey. They’re killing me

Ann: You better man up. Because your beatdown hasn’t even started.

Mitt: Honey. Could you do me a favor?

Ann: Ah Lawd not this again.

          • Admiral_Komack

            You mean she’s gonna do a Politico…again?

          • GN

HMMMMM…I remember Ann Romney stepping in it when they were attacking that newsperson for saying that Ann Romney doesn’t work. And Team Obama took flack from supporters for saying that she’s off limits and deserves kudos for raising kids. She can have a seat.

      • Sometimes I think the media is setting him up for that beatdown. Telling him it’s a horserace and giving him wall to wall free advertising.

The bus tour is a perfect example. The media chatted it up big time but there was no groundswell of any kind. Meantime PBO does a couple of days in stifling heat and gets rock star treatment while the national media does everything possible to bury the story. Their reaction spoke volumes.

A poor to mediocre team had a Cinderella run. Now it’s about to come to an end in the most brutal ugly way imaginable.

This explains why Mark Halperin was crying earlier.

    Power of TV ads

In a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll of swing states, an overwhelming majority of voters remember seeing campaign ads over the past month; most voters in other states say they haven’t. In the battlegrounds, one in 12 say the commercials have changed their minds about President Obama or Republican Mitt Romney — a difference on the margins, but one that could prove crucial in a close race.

At this point, Obama is the clear winner in the ad wars. Among swing-state voters who say the ads have changed their minds about a candidate, rather than just confirmed what they already thought, 76% now support the president, vs. 16% favoring Romney.

“We gave them new information,” says Obama campaign manager Jim Messina. “Romney had been out there claiming success as governor,” but Democratic ads have prompted voters to “take a look at his record” on job creation and as head of the private-equity firm Bain Capital. Messina also credits a $25 million buy for a positive ad “about the challenges the president inherited and what we had to do to move this country forward.”

To be sure, Obama’s ads have done more to win back Democrats than to win over independents or Republicans: Thirteen percent of Democrats say their minds have been changed by ads, compared with 9% of independents and 3% of Republicans.

    • AxelFoley

      They runnin’ scurred.

    • The Bain ads are working and that’s why the media is criticizing the ads.

    – – – –Oscar-winning film star Ernest Borgnine dies

    – – — LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ernest Borgnine, the beefy screen star known for blustery, often villainous roles, but who won the best-actor Oscar for playing against type as a lovesick butcher in “Marty” in 1955, died Sunday. He was 95.

He was also in the TV series “McHale’s Navy” and was the guy who beats up Frank Sinatra in “From Here to Eternity.”

REALLY liked all his films/characters. :>)

The beating he gave Frank Sinatra in From Here From Eternity was never shown but oh boy it was scary because you knew what was going on.

He was also in one of my favorite Westerns The Badlanders with Alan Ladd and his soon to be wife Katy Jurado.

And he kept working. Thanks Ernie.

That was a great western, and Woody, I like that you have an affinity for the Westerns.

RIP Ernest Borgnine, one of the greats!

        • The Mexicans saved the day. How many movies back then or even now show Mexicans as heroes?

Love Alan Ladd’s line when one of the white characters said they don’t trust Mexicans.

Ladd: I do. Personally I’ve forgotten all about the Alamo.

That opening sequence where the one prisoner tries to drown himself and almost takes the whole chain gang with him.

And there was real heat between Borgnine and Jurado.

      • Admiral_Komack

I remember him as “Dominic Santini” in “Airwolf”.

        Rest In Peace, Sir.

      • JojoRaze

Marty is my JAM!!! I watched it because it was movie set in the Bronx and loved it because it was so earnest and heartfelt. Sigh!! A real talent, Mr. Borgnine.

*Sigh*….I was wondering why Smartypants was trying to figure out what happened with Tavis

And I kept seeing others on my timeline making tweets about silly Tavis.

    here’s why *these mofos*
Tavis Smiley, Cornel West Slam Valerie Jarrett, Obama For Insincerity Toward African-Americans

    • Ebogan63

“Tavis Smiley, Cornel West Slam Valerie Jarrett, Obama For Insincerity Toward African-Americans ”

Damn, projection much? As if these mofos ‘loovvve’ for us ninjas is ‘sincere’, got dayum hustlers!

      • Nah, what Tavis REALLY meant was, “Why hasn’t President Obama expressed his love for ME??”

        • GN

“Where’s my tickets for the inauguration and where’s my mother’s ticket and my brother’s?”

Please. PBO hasn’t put them on; this is the number one reason that he’s been attacked so hatefully by media personalities “on the left.”

      • GN

Seriously; I’m past the point of entertaining that either of these two give a good got dayum about black people. Because they couldn’t do what they do in terms of trying to deflate PBO’s black support if they did. Nothing complicated about this at all.

    • GN

Karl Rove said that it would only take a few percentage points of black voters turning away from PBO to defeat him. And like clockwork, the sole patrol and professional left flood us with propaganda to that same effect. These people aint shit, and there’s nothing really complicated or hard to figure out re: their underlying disdain for black folks including the black President.

Tavis can go fuck himself along with Arianna, Markos, and the rest of these assholes. They don’t care if Mitt is elected because it doesn’t hurt them. Thus they are free to purity troll and otherwise act the fool. Buyer beware.

      • Rove is kidding himself.

      • nathkatun7

Well said GN! Most of us see through these characters. In the end, the only people who embrace and promote them are the Arianna Huffigtons and the Ed Shultz’. President Obama had to fight the relentless vile haters from the Republican party and the holier than thou haters from the purity progressives. For these two jokers to join in piling on, while pretending to be for black folks, simply takes the cake.

The vast majority of black people are not stupid. Most of us understand the political dynamics President Obama had to operate with. Most of us also understand the hustle being played on us by Tavis Smiley and the good doctor, Cornel West. As much as they claim to love Black folks, they are both beholden to, and are serving, white dominated institutions. The last time I checked, neither Princeton nor PBS had as their primary goal the advancement of the nebulous West/Smiley Black Agenda.

I hope Smiley and West don’t think that Black people are so stupid to believe that if Willard “Mitt” Romney is elected President he will implement the Smiley/West Black Agenda.

    • AxelFoley

      These two coons…

They stay mad because PBO has made them obsolete. Instead of black leaders who talk a good game, we got a real black leader–check that, a leader who happens to be black–who gets things done. Like I’ve said before, PBO done threw a monkey wrench in they hustle.

    – – — Obama Adviser Says President Will Not Extend Bush Tax Cuts, Even Temporarily: ’100% Committed’– – –

    – — – –As House Republicans return to Washington to a vote on extending the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts for another year, Obama adviser Robert Gibbs insisted that the president would not support giving rich people another tax break. “Let’s make some progress on our spending by doing away with tax cuts for people who quite frankly don’t need them – tax cuts that haven’t worked,” Gibbs said during an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union. Obama is “100% committed” to that position, he insisted. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney made a similar pledge last month when he was asked directly if the president supports a temporary extension of the cuts, which expire at the end of the year. Carney said, “He will not. Could I be more clear?” Watch Gibbs:

BILL BURTON IS DA MAN…..point blank, the Rethugs can spend 50-leven billion dollars and will still not get it. They cannot out-brain Obama’s ground team. Bill Burton, Stephanie Cutter and Ben Labolt are the all-pro defense team. They are hardcore.

Can the Democrats Catch Up in the Super-PAC Game?

The Mostyns acknowledged not wanting to see Mitt Romney in the Oval Office. Still, they wondered how any donation could possibly make a difference. “They’re spending ridiculous amounts of money on the other side,” Amber Mostyn said. “All the crazy commercials they’re going to put up — how do you combat that?”

Burton was ready for this question. “You don’t do it dollar for dollar,” he said. He whipped out his iPad and showed the Mostyns a few slides from his PowerPoint presentation. The slides included polling data indicating voters’ lack of familiarity with Romney’s business record at the private-equity firm Bain Capital, as well as financial figures from the 2010 midterm election showing how well-spent donations could help a Democrat prevail over a better-financed Republican opponent.

Then Burton pulled up something else on his screen: raw video footage that Priorities intended to use for attack ads against Romney. Appearing were the somber images of several men and women who were laid off by Bain. The individuals were tracked down by Brennan Bilberry, the super PAC’s 26-year-old research director, and persuaded to tell their stories on camera.

    – – – –Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said Sunday that the presumptive GOP nominee for president, Mitt Romney, was the “daddy” of the Democrats’ 2010 healthcare reform law.

“Let’s get down to the bottom line here: Mitt Romney is the ObamaCare daddy,” Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

“He gave birth to this baby up in Massachusetts, and now he doesn’t recognize it, and can’t pick out any strains in the hereditary chain there that look like anything he did in Massachusetts.”

President Obama and other top Democrats have long said that the healthcare reform bill that Romney helped implement while Massachusetts governor was a model for their own national overhaul.

Romney has said that he wants to repeal the 2010 law, calling it bad policy and saying what works in individual states doesn’t necessarily get the job done at the national level.- – [PHLIP!- – -PHLOP!! –PHOOL!]

I don’t watch Sunday News shows, but from what i’ve read, and the clips I’ve seen, It seems that the Democrats who appeared on these shows today did an excellent job backing up the President and putting Mitt Romney on a hot seat. I bet you next week these shows will go back to inviting Harold Ford, Cory Booker, Ed Randell and Bill Clinton. No more invitation to Dick Durbin, Gov. O’Malley or Robert Gibbs.

Bill Kristol: Romney camp has reason to ‘worry’

By Meghashyam Mali – 07/08/12 04:04 PM ET

Political analyst Bill Kristol on Sunday added to conservative criticism of Mitt Romney’s campaign, saying it was a troubling sign that Obama was still ahead in the polls despite a still weak economy.

“President Obama has had three disappointing months, but he’s holding his own,” said Kristol on Fox News Sunday, citing polls which show him even with or leading Romney despite a series of weak jobs reports. “If I were in the Romney campaign that would worry me.”

Kristol, the founder and editor of the conservative Weekly Standard, said that the Romney campaign had failed to convince voters they had a viable plan to revive the economy.

He pointed to a Fox News poll showing Romney performing worse than Obama on the economy, which voters rank as the most important issue this election.

“I think the Fox News poll actually has the key to what the problem is for the Mitt Romney campaign. Do you think Barack Obama has a clear plan for improving the economy or not? Yes, 41; no 53. It’s not great for an incumbent president. The economy is slow. And you are only at 41-53,” said Kristol.

“Do you think his challenger, Gov. Romney, has a clear plan for improving the economy or not? Yes, 27; No, 55,” he continued.

“I don’t think you can beat an incumbent president, even if the economy is slow, if 27 percent of the voters think you as the challenger don’t have a clear plan for improving the economy,” Kristol said.

Florida accused of concealing worst tuberculosis outbreak in 20 years

The state of Florida has been struggling for months with what the Centers for Disease Control describe as the worst tuberculosis outbreak in the United States in twenty years.

Although a CDC report went out to state health officials in April encouraging them to take concerted action, the warning went largely unnoticed and nothing has been done. The public did not even learn of the outbreak until June, after a man with an active case of TB was spotted in a Jacksonville soup kitchen.

The Palm Beach Post has managed to obtain records on the outbreak and the CDC report, though only after weeks of repeated requests. These documents should have been freely available under Florida’s Sunshine Law.

What the hell is going on in Florida?

      • goldenstar

Don’t you think that part of this is that creeped out governor? Like this is a public health hazard if not disaster…

        • trose1

This is the part that disturbs me the most, WTF is this? The underclass can get sick and die?

“Believing the outbreak affected only their underclass, the health officials made a conscious decision not to not tell the public, repeating a decision they had made in 2008, when the same strain had appeared in an assisted living home for people with schizophrenia.”

    – – — Report: Usher’s Stepson (Kyle Glover) Declared Brain Dead– – —

    – – –There’s horrible and sad news to report on Usher’s stepson, Kyle (aka: Kile) Glover.

11-year-old Kyle has declared brain dead by doctors following an accident yesterday when he was struck by a jet ski, TMZ is reporting.

According to our sources, Kyle Glover (son of Usher’s estranged wife Tameka Foster) has not experienced any brain activity since he was admitted to the hospital. We’re told there has been no decision yet as to whether or not to take him off life support.

Our sources say Usher arrived at the hospital last night and Tameka has not left the hospital since she got there.

RNC chairman: Obama will ‘put an end to our way of life’
“It’s an issue that we have to win on,” the RNC chairman explained. “The fact is that it’s not a question of can Mitt Romney win, the question is — the statement is Mitt Romney has to win for the sake of the very idea of America. Mitt Romney has to win for liberty and freedom.”

“And we have to put an end to this Barack Obama presidency before it puts an end to our way of life in America.”

Hey guys, I see the Biden will be speaking at NAACP conference. Does that mean POTUS will not be there?

Personally, I think if POTUS isn’t going, it’s because Romeny is going and unlike some people, POTUS seems to really be a nice guy and He knows there is NO WAY R-Money is gonna impress the NAACP crowd.

    Biden will wow ’em.

What I was wondering was has the sole patrol started to holler yet? Or Ro-ro and Crappy Ryan (April Ryan) cause POTUS may not be ther?

    • rikyrah

POTUS is going to the Urban League

    • Speaking of April, I haven’t seen any reporting from her concerning her being on Romney’s bus tour. She popped isht on Twitter saying Romney needs to address the Black community, but when she gets the chance to travel with him… crickets.

She and Tara sitting in the back of the bus playing tonk and talking about the last episode of Single Ladies. They are just there for show in case somebody ever asks Mitt bout the lack of diversity in his campaign. Which apparently no one ever will. But just in case, he’ll trot out Tara and then April will conveniently write something about it to appear in The Grio.

I commented the other day about PBO’s visit to Sandusky, Ohio. I am hoping PBO team makes sure bs like this does not happen again. I knew the local paper would make a big deal out of the confusion caused by the organizers.

Update: Privileged few attend Obama speech, with comment added from the Ohio Obama campaign

“President Barack Obama’s ice cream social Thursday in Sandusky was a sweet deal for roughly 300 VIPs who scored exclusive tickets to the event at Washington Park.

Thousands of others, however, were left with a bitter taste in their mouths, as they were entirely excluded from the heavily secured venue where the president delivered his speech.”

    – — –Jeremiah Wright: We need control– – –

    – — –President Barack Obama’s former spiritual adviser spoke just a few miles from the White House on Sunday, and politics and controversy weren’t far from what Rev. Jeremiah Wright had to say.

“As we celebrate the foundations of our future, this is not a time to romanticize because we have the first African-descended president in the White House,” Wright said in a fiery sermon that lasted close to an hour. “You see what the tea party is trying to do.”

Speaking at Washington’s Florida Avenue Baptist Church, which marks its 100th anniversary this week, Wright urged parishioners to teach their children true African-American history and not to cede their educations to “our enemies” who teach “his story,” one that “distorts our story, disses our story.”

Children may “only know Oprah and Obama,” he said, so it’s up to elders to teach about Nat Turner, Emmett Till, Rosa Parks, Paul Robeson, Zora Neale Hurston and other black voices.

“We need to tell our children … how we got from a black congressman named Adam Clayton Powell to a black president named Barack Hussein Obama,” he said to applause. “But we also need to tell them how we have black politicians who steal money.”– — [A non sequitr!!- THROWIN’ SHADE!!]

    – – -SNIP– –

    – Wright also blasted people who he described as “biscuits” and “sheep dogs” — African Americans raised in the white world.

How long before Bill Clinton, Ed Rendell, and Corey Booker start saying that going after Romney over tax returns and foreign bank accounts is nauseating and unfair? I think one of them might say something like that in the next two weeks.

    • Ebogan63

I would count on it, but you know what? The campaign has so defined Rmoney, that it prob. won’t matter what those jackasses say.

PBO will tell ’em to have a stadium full of seats, anyway.

    • Town

I don’t think Bill Clinton would say anything negative about the Obama campaign harping about the tax returns. Hell, he had to show his returns, Hillary had to show her returns, errybody had to show their returns but this dude feels he’s above that?

No, Bill Clinton won’t say anything about this, and Cory Booker will keep his mouth shut.

Ed Rendell, however, WILL say something about, whether it’s on his own or at the behest of Bill Clinton.

      • rikyrah

in order for Hillary to become SOS, they had to turn over the donor list for the Clinton foundation

  • JojoRaze

Hey Guys!! GLH, My condolences to you and your family. This has to be such a great loss, but I know you are confident your mother was right with her God which comforts you.

Thank you all for keeping me informed about the campaign. PBO and Obama campaign are beating the breaks off of R-Money. And the Dems finally seem to be sticking to the talking points. Dick Durbin and Gov Strickland are standouts in that regard. Reading the transcript from this morning’s Candy Crowley shows Gibby-Gibbs also shanked Mittens. The “I pick a bank because it has an ATM nearby while R-Money has money in Switzerland and Bermuda” is classic. This is phase two of the campaign. They talked about Bain and now they are talking about the offshore accounts. And Romney’s got nothing. The swing-state polling about who has a good plan for the economy and having PBO with the edge on that question is telling. All Romney can do is complain about the monthly job numbers but he has no plan to improve those numbers, either. Mittens can’t get PBO off his stride with so many skeletons in his closet and he can no longer discuss his business experience without leaving a bad taste in people’s mouths.

    • isonprize

      to quote the great Rikyrah…

“Nobody is playing with you, Mitt.”

      • JojoRaze

They really aren’t playing with him at.all. They are just defining him as a rich guy who cares nothing about anyone or anything but himself. And it sticks because it’s true. And he has done nothing to make the narrative to fall off him. When you ill-treat a woman’s restaurant, when you diss the cookies of people who invited you to their bakery (small businesses, all) and when you are worth $250 million or so and can’t even give your biggest supporter a new truck, clear in his name, that says you are a jerk par excellence. Huckabee was right when he said Mitt Romney reminds you of the guy who fired your father.

I was looking around youtube and ran across a video I’d never seen before. It is then-Senator Barack Obama being interviewed by Tavis Smiley in Oct. 2007. This was after Obama had started running for president, but still 3 months before the Iowa caucuses.

I’ll admit that, in retrospect, some of Obama’s rhetoric about his ability to bridge the divide in Washington sounds naive after what we’ve been through these last 4 years. But overall, I see the same man with the same commitments we hear about today.

There is, however, one man in this interview whose rhetoric has changed since back then. What happened to you Tavis?

    Smartypants: Who changed, Tavis?

From what you’ve shared you are facing your loss with incredible courage, strength and love. But I hope that you will take some time off to rest. Sometimes It takes such a long time to truly come to grips with the loss of a loved one, especially our mothers. I know you already know that you mom, though she is no longer physically with you here, will always be with you. She will always be with you through love and remembrances.Nevertheless you still need time to grieve.
