What’s That You’re Doing w/Paul McCartney

  • Alma98

I’m tickled at the folks trying to save Bob Estes racist ass.
Black folks are not having it though lol.

    • rikyrah

      no…folks aren’t having it.

you wanna attack a Black person..

it sure as hell better not be someone on the level of Nelson Mandela.

folks are out of fucks to give…

since you wanna be this stupid…

      get what you deserve…

      • Alma98

I bet his ass will think twice next time.

        • Miranda

I bet his ass will be on Fox News this week along with that damn sheriff in South Carolina that won’t lower the flag.

          • Alma98

You know it, they’ll be whining about the black racists. And faux news will only be to happy to let them spew it.

      • Miranda

        buh…buh….but Estes has black friends!!!

well…at least he did in high school.

        • conlakappa

I just saw that on POU’s Twitter section. Um, if you’re 47 years old and need to go back to “friends” from 30 years ago as proof of your nonracism, maybe you should take a moment or two to reflect.

  • Alma98

How come the country music folks have fifty eleven music award shows? LOL

  • rikyrah
  • jziglar

The media is so full of shit. So now the jobs numbers and the unemployment rate doesn’t matter though it did before when it was used to attack the president. Next year based on projections the unemployment rate will be below 7 % but the village will do everything they can to downplay it.

    • Miranda

Oh it doesn’t matter because the numbers are exactly the opposite of what the media had hoped they would be. So now they gotta pivot to something else. As the ACA site gets better and better they will pretend that the site never mattered in the first place, just watch.

    • isonprize

but the village IDIOTS will do everything they can to downplay it.

There, jzig, I fixed it for you.

      • conlakappa

It was almost whispered in some economic news on Thursday or Friday, “unemployment is still well over 7%,” which caused my eyebrow to arch skyward but whatever. Earlier in the week I heard that Black Friday shopping was up 2.2% from last year, which also caused the eyebrow up because I’d heard a couple of weeks before that it was expected to go down by 2%. Media folks stay trifling.

In a fit of unirony, I saw in the Wash Post that a speech that Joe B. gave in Asia has been taken out of context by the U.S. press [!!]. So I know the die is cast and what the message will be in trying to tear down Joe B. while elevating HRC: he’s a sexist pig, through his own words and by association with a President who hasn’t appointed enough wimmins!!! They telegraph their moves, don’t they?

  • Miranda

OK…for all the POUers up north…I’m sorry for the times I’ve bitched about the cold weather here today….watching NFL Red Zone and they are showing the games being played where it has been a complete white out…and Green Bay wasn’t even snowing much during the game but it looked cold as $#($(#)(*# (insert curse word)……..I shivered just watching.

    • isonprize

The Eagles – Lions played in 4+” inches of snow and it was still falling during the game. Only because of technology did TV viewers see the yardline markers. The refs were hollering “Can’t see the goal line” and the guys would come out and shovel a line across the field.

American Football in the winter is CRAZY!!!

      • Miranda

I saw that and couldn’t figure out why folks don’t want DOMES to play football! Some folks insist on open air fields when they KNOW the weather will not always cooperate!

        • conlakappa

Turf is evil. I think you have to have turf in indoor stadia.

          • Miranda

LMAO….but turf can’t be worse than running on ICE!

    • TyrenM

The Queens played in Baltimore. Technology showed yard lines. 4 touchdowns in a 2 minute span. Cray.

HOW TF did NY get the Super Bowl?

    • BluMilw

I was at the game at Lambeau today and let’s just put it this way. It was a noon game. I wore two pairs of socks and my boots. It’s now almost 9 p.m. and my feet are still cold. LOL

    • isonprize

Ted Cruz needs to get his ass OFF THAT PLANE!!!

  • lamh36

I’m only 37 and don’t consider myself particularly wise, but still I want to impart some wisdom on you young folk. If there is any advice I feel comfortable in giving is to take care of your credit while you’re young. I swear I’m still trying to make amends for things I did to my credit when I was in my early 20….hard lesson learned so you don’t have to.

    • conlakappa

Wise words. As I wrote to you when you talked about your resolutions, it is still possible to make amends. With every 12-month period of you being responsive to your bills, celebrate and also work with your creditors to take those blemishes off your record. Slowly but surely, inch by inch…

    • Lisa M

      I feel you on that!!

I will also add it’s a good idea to pay off undergrad student loans before getting grad student loans as much as possible.

Weakness by Stevie & Dionne is one of my favorite songs. I performed a “soul” waltz to this song for my dance class. It shows Stevie’s musical brilliance. It’s in 3, so you can waltz to it. We can do ANYTHING we put our minds to, and add our our flavor!

    • conlakappa

By dance class, you mean one you are taking now or are you teaching it? This from the past? No, I’m not being regular nosy–the husband and I have been doing ballroom dance for a year now. Great fun. We are looking at doing a rumba and//or tango next, having done waltz, cha-cha, foxtrot, and salsa to date.

      • isonprize

Both. I enjoy doing partner dancing, I take and I help with the dance classes that are at rec centers. Good, cheap fun! Philly is a dance town, for real. The best description would be “Soul Partner Dancing”

Bop (which white folks would probably call an East Coast swing), Two-step, Strand, Nightclub Foxtrot, Salsa, Cha-cha, Detroit ballroom (which is basically a cha-cha but ssssshhh – don’t tell Detroit that…), Chicago steppin’, you name it, we do it!!

My next challenge is that hand-dancing that Baltimore has on lock! WAY too much turning for me, but I really want to learn the basics.

        2 Steppin’ Philly Style

        • conlakappa

Gotcha! I thought D.C. was hand-dancing central. I don’t want to start a dance war or anything between the cities! I know ladies who are in their 60s/70s who go at least twice weekly. I cannot even begin to hang like that. I have gotten better at turning the past month but there is way too much of it in dance for women! I tell my dance instructors, a bunch of 20somethings, that it’s all fun and games until you hit 40!

          • isonprize

There is a ballroom in New Jersey called Stardust that brings a few dance genres together.

“Genres” HAHAHAHAHA It ain’t that deep. Phila, Delaware, Baltimore, (even DC sometimes) come together for dance fun and yeah, friendly dance challenges. Hand dancing is a Baltimore/DC thing. Philly does the Bop and Two-Step and Cha-Cha, plus Free-style, of course.

          • conlakappa

I’m from Trenton and remember my mother and her crowd [great dancers; me? not so much, at least not naturally so] doing the Bop, Two-Step, The Stomp, The Womp, etc. At my mother’s 60th birthday, we have a video of her and a friend tearing up the dance floor. I was concerned about their knees, hips, and the other woman’s heart. Boy did they love to dance.

I learned all the dances but have performed the ones I mentioned.

          • Aquagranny911

            LOL!

          • isonprize

Don’t let the gray hair fool ya! LOLOLOL

      • Aquagranny911

The tango is Everything! So, so, so…passionate. Hubby & I love all kinds of dancing but he has been laid up with his foot so we haven’t been going to our dance group lately. I miss it.

        • isonprize

AG, I know. My dance class is like we are cousins or something. We have pot lucks in the summer and do pollyanna (secret santa) at holiday time. Just good ol’ fashion fun!

          • Aquagranny911

You are the one who got us into a line dance group. We have so much fun & have even done some exhibition dances for the community center. Hubby & I love all kinds of ballroom which our group also has once a month. They are Fam & great people!

Since Hubby broke his foot we have been sort of benched.

        • conlakappa

We did the tango together for the first time in months. The husband says if we perform the tango at an upcoming event it will be the only dance we perform that day. We usually do two. I’m interested in hearing about choices of tango music, rather than the ones frequently used. I liked the tango scene in Moulin Rouge, the musical, but don’t know that I’m ready to commit to being Roxanne, who didn’t need to put on her red light! Did you see my note before we did it about doing the salsa to La Negra Tiene Tumbao? Much fun.

          • Aquagranny911

I love salsa! Def go for that tango scene in Moulin Rouge or for the one Antonio Banderas & partner did in “Take the Lead” if you wish to be more hard to get, lol.

I’ve been up since 5:30 & I am starting to fade some & still have to do dinner. I will think on some music & get back to you on that. I always say if you are going to do the tango, don’t hold back! The dance tells a story of longing, passion & SEX. I say go for it but that is just me.

          • conlakappa

Thanks! Our salsa was pretty hot. Yeah, the tango should be hot. But I don’t know if I want to go for Moulin Rouge ho-hot!

            Rest well.

          • TyrenM

Damn. That’s hot. Make’s me wanna take a dance class.

          • conlakappa

Ha! You should. You can look for places where your daughter could also be a student–my mother has a little friend who is around your daughter’s age and already has some serious dance moves and loves it [I'd embed a clip of her if I knew how!]. Or, you could find a different path like a couple we met a few weeks ago: they met at the dance studio and are now married. They are grown and met a couple of years ago.

          • TyrenM

I was just informed that our office AA Affinity Group will be sponsoring a Father-Daughter Dance next spring. Your timing is serendipitous.

          • conlakappa

Perfect. Getting her involved in dance early might be a good way to ensure she stays confident and has that some sense of joy she has right now. Luck to you both.

We will get to dance at my husband’s company holiday party. I’ll literally be wearing my dancing shoes. They are fashionable rather than the usual shiny style/impractical color and a reasonable heel. I never understand women at semi-formal [or formal, for that matter] events unshod because their party shoes were hurting their feet. Suffering for beauty is so not part of my life. Guys have it so easy. That’s another thing to think about as I consider the tango: what to wear. Probably closer to the main ho in the Moulin Rouge tango vs. what Antonio’s partner is wearing.

    • Miranda

It is one of my absolute favorites too!

      • conlakappa

The annual feature on the honorees is in today’s Wash Post, an article per performer. There’s a reference to her being a fun talk show guest that took me back to being a teenager and seeing Martina Arroyo on Johnny Carson. She always had something arch to say about tenors.

  • lamh36

I’m not one for wearing weaves, but I’m thinking my next “protective style” will be a weave in stead of the braids, and I saw this and was like…I want this weave…lol.

In more media unirony today, on the CBS Sunday Morning report of Nelson Mandela’s death, Martha T. reported on apartheid going into effect in 1948, complete with whites-only signs on benches and such. No mention was made on it having been based on the U.S. Jim Crow policies and tactics. Nope. Apparently it was invented out of whole cloth and had no ties whatsoever to the evil being perpetrated in this country. /eyeroll

    • Miranda

Yeah i’m noticing too how they’re pretending like apartheid was some foreign concept…smh

The U.S. and its selective historical amnesia.

      • nathkatun7

Indeed, Sepai! Gore Vidal was right when he called U.S.A. the “United States of Amnesia.”

    • nathkatun7

Racial segregation and Black oppression in SA go as far back as the sixteenth century with the beginning of white settlements.1948 marks the more aggressive de jure Segregation. Similarly, racial segregation and Black oppression in the United States, both in the North and the South, which predated the enactment of the post Reconstruction Jim crow laws in the South, go as far back as the 1630s and 1640s in the English colonies.

By the way, Black oppression and racial segregation was not just confined to South Africa. All European colonies in Africa, but especially those with significant numbers of white settlers like Rhodesia (Now Zimbabwe and Zambia), Kenya, and Algeria, segregated Africans.

In South Africa, other European colonies in Africa, and the United States, Black oppression and racial segregation stemmed from the ideology of white supremacy. Sadly, a significant number of people in this country still subscribe to the ideology of white supremacy.

      • conlakappa

All that. My only point was that in a facile reporting of the system, there was no mention of the architects of it using the American system as their blueprint. If I were going more broadly, I wouldn’t limit myself to Africa and North America. There were still whites-only establishments in Hong Kong into the late 20th century. Macau is still restrictive, innit?

        • nathkatun7

Yes indeed! Sorry I forgot to thank you for your comment. My comment was in addition to yours and not meant as a critique of what you wrote. The doctrine of white supremacy and the hierarchy of races, with Europeans at the top, Asian in the middle and Africans at the bottom was spread throughout all the continents. Sadly a great many of of us Africans, Asians and Europeans bought into it.

Rand Paul: Unemployment benefits program is a ‘disservice’ to black workers

    By David Edwards
    Sunday, December 8, 2013 9:59 EST

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) on Sunday said that he opposed extending a
program to for emergency unemployment benefits because it did a
    “disservice” to African-American workers.

During an interview on Fox News Sunday to hype Paul’s “Economic Freedom Zone” plan for lower taxes in Detroit, host Chris Wallace noted that President Barack Obama had called out the Republican Party for refusing to renew the Emergency Unemployment Compensation program while the black unemployment rate was still over 12 percent.

“I do support unemployment benefits for the 26 weeks that they’re
paid for,” Paul insisted. “If you extend it beyond that, you do a disservice to these workers.”

…“When you allow people to be on unemployment insurance for 99 weeks, you’re causing them to become part of this perpetual unemployed group in our economy,” Paul remarked. “And while it seems good, it actually does a disservice to the people you’re trying to help.”

    – - – - -With the passing of Nelson Mandela, the sweeping biopic “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” transforms in the midst of its theatrical release from a living tribute to a big-screen eulogy.

The South African revolutionary and former president, who died Thursday at the age of 95, has long been a compelling figure for movies — a hero of uncommon dignity whose dramatic story and titanic accomplishments insured his tale would be told often in film.

But arguably the fullest movie portrait of Mandela’s life — a film made with his permission and his family’s support — was released just six days before his death.

    - -The film has screened for dignitaries around the world, including for President Barack Obama in the White House. It’s already a hit in South Africa, where it set a box-office debut record, earning $427,000 in its opening week.

For weeks, David Gregory has been ignoring the improvements in the ACA website. Gregory and Meet The Press are ignoring the fact that ACA sign ups are increasing exponentially.
The responsibility for the continued pushing of these false statements rests with David Gregory and NBC News. The Meet The Press host keeps pushing the false story that the ACA website is broken. So my sister is watchin the Oprah interview too. and we are discussing it on FB.

A friend of her commented on the break up of Winnie and Nelson’s marriage. I understand how sometimes people like to put things in terms they understand, but I’m of course telling her tha the Mandela’s circumstances are such that you can attribute the usual incarcarated husband/boyfriend tropes onto their divorce.

    Here’s the convo:

Friend: She stood by him but he ain’t stand by her he got released from Prison in 1990 they seperated in 1992 and divorced in 1996…I would’ve killed his ass after standing by him during a 27 yr prison bid…

Me: naw it was 27years. while he was in prison, she was out an her and her daughters were harassed and she was exiled. So for her although Mandela came out of prison with an more non-militant and more reconcilitory agenda, she was not willing to give up the militant side as is her right. So the situation was NOT like that of some random dude who’s been in prison for 27 years. After 27 years apart, you have 2 people at 2 different poles of a VIP and volatile issue. Winnie had her way and Mandela had his, so the path they had to walk afterwards wasn’t one they could any longer walk together. she was there when he got out and they walked out together and they stayed together as long as possible and stayed together during his election and then went seperate ways.

    • crazycanuck

And we don’t know who wanted the divorce. Why does she think he wanted the divorce?

    — -South Africans and African Americans Bound by Struggle — -The anti-apartheid and civil rights movements share a history of fighting for democratic change.

    – — -☺We often hear about the “special relationship” between the United States and Great Britain—rooted in history and personified by the close personal friendship between President Bill Clinton and Prime Minister Tony Blair during the 1990s. But there’s another “special relationship,”one less commented upon but equally noteworthy, between the African-American community and black South Africans.
The death of Nelson Mandela this week at the age of 95 offers the perfect context to look back on the relationship that helped bring greater freedom and democracy to two different nations and continents, and forged bonds between them.

America’s civil rights struggles helped to inspire South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement, and the Sharpeville Massacre, reverberating around the world in 1960 after South African police
killed 69 peaceful demonstrators, became a clarion call for civil rights
    activists in the U.S.
The black power movement during the 1960s and 1970s inspired the “black consciousness” movement in South Africa under the leadership of Steve Biko, whose tragic death while in police custody would be immortalized in the 1987 film Cry Freedom.

Yet it would be Mandela’s story that would solidify this special
relationship between black South Africans and African Americans. Mandela symbolized the fight against apartheid in much the same way that MartinLuther King Jr. symbolized the American civil rights movement. During the black power era, Pan-Africanists in this country saw South Africa asthe crown jewel of a continent undergoing a renaissance of freedom and decolonization.
    – — – -SNIP- —
The anti-apartheid movement swept college campuses, offering a new generation of activists, including, famously, a young Occidental College student named Barack Obama, a chance to join a social movement.

From Mr. Mandela’s opening statement in the 1964 trial:

It is not only in internal politics that we count communists as amongst those who support our cause. In the international field, communist countries have always come to our aid. In the United Nations and other Councils of the world the communist bloc has supported the Afro-Asian struggle against colonialism and often seems to be more sympathetic to our plight than some of the Western powers. Although there is a universal condemnation of apartheid, the communist bloc speaks out against it with a louder voice than most of the white world. In these circumstances, it would take a brash young politician, such as I was in 1949, to proclaim that the Communists are our enemies.
