Sunday Evening Thread: Darrell Issa Is An Idiot

The man is an utter disgrace. Thank you Mayor Emanuel and Adviser Axelrod for calling Issa out for his complete disregard for the security and well-being of so many individuals working in Libya and the Middle East.

Obama Camp: It Only Took Romney One Term as Governor to Raise the Debt and Ruin Jobs

[….] In Romney’s new ad, his campaign claims “Some can’t live up to their promises. Others find a way.” The narrator says that a four-year term is “all Mitt Romney needed. He turned Massachusetts around, cut unemployment, turned the deficit he inherited into a rainy day fund, all with an 85% Democratic legislature.”[….]

Obama for America spokeswoman Lis Smith released the following statement on Mitt Romney’s new ad: “If his latest ad is any indication, Mitt Romney’s Romnesia is only getting worse. But he is right on one point- he only needed four years as governor of Massachusetts. That’s because in just one term, Romney drove the state down to 47th out of 50th in job creation, increased per capita debt to the largest in the nation, left his successor a $1 billion deficit, and pushed through a tax cut that overwhelmingly benefited 278 of the wealthiest residents while raising taxes and fees on everyone else. And he did all of this while refusing to work across the aisle. Mitt Romney wouldn’t make Washington better- he’d make it worse.”[….]

    School Shutdowns Trigger Growing Backlash

[….] Student and parent groups in Chicago, the District of Columbia, New York, Newark, N.J., and Philadelphia gathered in Washington late last month to call for a moratorium on school closings and filed separate complaints with the U.S. Department of Education’s office for civil rights. In those complaints, the groups allege that in previous rounds of school closings, their districts have not been transparent and have been influenced by outside interests, such as charter school operators.

They also argue that the closings have had a harmful and disparate impact on minority students and communities. Each of the districts has predicted new closures for the coming school year.[….] “Instead of stabilizing neighborhoods, instead of fixing schools, instead of doing what parents want, schools are closed, people are fired, and what replaces them in the main is no better than what’s come before.”[….]

Swing State Papers Flock to Obama, Deem Romney Unworthy of Presidency

Swing state papers in Colorado, Ohio, North Carolina, and Arizona (yes, Arizona is turning out to be a 2012 surprise of a swing state) endorsed President Obama this weekend.[….]

[….] Every editorial covered so far has been thoughtful and interesting in terms of how the editors see the President’s policies impacting their local area. But most interesting to me was the Akron Beacon Journal’s deep analysis of how a leader uses government. As the nation was focused on avoiding another Great Depression, few noticed how Obama’s stimulus invested in our nation. Those choices spoke volumes about his vision for this country – green energy, better education, investment in scientific research, infrastructure and manufacturing jobs.

Perhaps it doesn’t get talked about often because we focus on the minutiae, lurching from one Republican manufactured crisis to another, but if you stand back from this Presidency, you can see a vision as big as FDR’s in terms of how we use government. If you believe that government was designed to stand for the common good, your choice is clear.

Since his first day in office, President Obama has focused on laying the foundation for an economy built to last—creating jobs for American workers, cutting taxes for middle class families and small businesses, investing in education, manufacturing and American-made energy, and making sure everyone plays by the same rules, from Main Street to Wall Street.[….]

Each policy snapshot has two sections: Progress, which gives you a quick overview of the work President Obama has done since taking office, and What’s Next, which helps you understand President Obama’s plans for continuing the progress underway.

    How to use the snapshots:

Hmmm…I seem to recall a discussion here that centered around Mitt’s staff being willing to say anything in order to to collect a paycheck. Tip of the Hat to POU!

It Pays (Well) To Be a Republican Campaign Flunkie

[….] Ten Romney for President staffers received bonuses — as much as $37,500 — in September, according to Federal Election Commission filings released today. Romney political director Rich Beeson scored the largest amount, taking in a combined $75,000 in two payments on August 31, after the Republican National Convention, and September 13.

According to an spokesperson, the money was paid out of the campaign’s account for the primaries, and are “win bonuses as part of people’s employee agreements.” Win bonuses? That’s a little premature.

This isn’t the first time that the Romney campaign has sent out big bonus checks to staffers. Last quarter, they gave out over $100,000 in bonuses as well. Ironically, while they’re doling out those big checks (which is simply not done on the Democratic side–typically, consultants will get a commission of the ad buys), the Romney campaign isn’t getting the donations the Obama campaign is getting.[….]

    – —-Rubio Develops ‘Romnesia’ While Trying To Explain Romney’s Position On Contraception- – –

    – – — Last week, President Obama joked that some Romney surrogates are suffering from “Romnesia” — an ability to forget the candidate’s old positions on major campaign issues, in favor of his new positions. On Sunday, during an appearance on Meet The Press, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) was presenting severe symptoms of that condition, spending a good portion of his interview trying to explain how Romney’s stances on contraception and abortion have not changed and ignoring the campaign’s efforts to to obscure Romney’s record on women’s health issues.

For instance, Rubio tried to sweep under the rug Romney’s support of the Blunt Amendment, a measure that would have allowed employers with “moral objections” to deny contraception coverage to their female employees. He also refused to say if Romney would “sign a bill that banned abortion,” as the former Massachusetts governor had promised during a GOP primary debate in 2007:

    – —- – -Watch it: – – -SNIP- —

    — —- – Not only would the Blunt Amendment prevent women from gaining access to abortion, but Romney has also pledged to repeal the Affordable Care Act writ large. Doing so, would eliminate provisions that require insurers and employers to offer contraception coverage without additional co-pays.Romney’s pledge to defund Planned Parenthood would also significantly weaken women’s access to affordable contraception.- —

Civil rights activists vow to continue the fight to free John McNeil ARLINGTON, Va – The NAACP held a press conference Friday to send out a clear message that they will continue to fight for the release of an African-American businessman who they say has been wrongly incarcerated.

It comes just two days after the disappointing news that Georgia’s Attorney General is challenging a court’s ruling that John McNeil received an unfair trial and conviction.

The case, which has drawn national attention, centers on the life sentence given to McNeil in 2006 for killing an armed trespasser at his suburban metro Atlanta home. http://thegrio.com/2012/10/20/civil-rights-activists-vow-to-continue-the-fight-to-free-john-mcneil/

    – — -“ARE you better off than you were four years ago?”

Ronald Reagan asked that memorable question at the end of the presidential debate of October 1980, one week before Election Day.

    – – – -SNIP —

Yet for the most part, he has been holding his own in the polls and the prediction markets. At the moment, he is widely considered to have an advantage in the all-important Electoral College.

But why? Elections, of course, are not decided on economics alone. “Campaigns matter, at least a little,” said Thomas M. Holbrook, professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. “The issues and the candidates matter, at least a little.” Yet to the extent that the economy determines the election’s outcome, it’s possible that the stock market holds part of the explanation for Mr. Obama’s outsize electoral strength.

Through Friday, since Mr. Obama’s inauguration — his first 1,368 days in office — the Dow Jones industrial average has gained 67.9 percent. That’s an extremely strong performance — the fifth best for an equivalent period among all American presidents since 1900. The Bespoke Investment Group calculated those returns for The New York Times.
