I ask this with all seriousness, because I got into a verbal tiff with someone today with someone who said that the President ‘left Black people out’ of his inaugural address.

I asked what should he have said that was Black-specific. I got no answer, other than ‘ he should have said something’.

then, I get the ‘ he’s ignoring the Black Agenda’.

    I ask;
    1. what is in your list for the Black Agenda
    2. what can the President do – himself – not something that he needs Congress for – but, by himself- that’s Black specific?

    ” Black folks need jobs.’

    my response was ‘ And?’

what jobs program can the President do by Executive Order?

    • conlakappa

The Black Agenda? Did I miss the part when all black people (just U.S, or are there global provisions?) gave proxy to those who would draw up an agenda? Folks continue to get played, using incomplete talking points. If he wasn’t speaking to black voter rights when he mentioned the issues, then my comprehension skills failed me. The security of such should be our number one agenda item or anything else won’t matter.

    • trose1

Great response, I am sure u got no answer on what the Pres can do by executive order.

    • isonprize

Wait. I heard Pres. Obama talk about people not standing in line for hours to vote. HHmmmmm, who were the majority of people THAT happened to?

I heard Pres Obama talk about a little girl in poverty having equal opportunities? Who are lots of little girls THAT live in poverty?

After I asked dude about his definition of the “black agenda” I would have asked him about what HE was doing for this “black agenda” of his….

    • JojoRaze

My answer to this question is always to ask the person : Which jobs plans exclusively for black people is gonna get pat Paul ‘makers and takers Ryan, John ‘I can’t control the crazy boehner, harry ‘I can barely get an up or down vote for appointments’ reid and Mitch ‘PBO must be a one-termer’ McConnell. There hasn’t been even ONE ELECTED black senator in the US Senate since PBO.

    • GN

“this country can’t claim to be a perfect union until those whose ancestors built this country as slaves have the same economic opportunities as everyone else.” It’s a pretty small complaint about an otherwise stellar speech, and I thought it too.

I don’t agree at all that Pres O is “ignoring the black agenda” though, that’s demonstrably untrue. But I definitely will be looking to get behind a primary candidate in 2016 who is overtly and explicitly trying to address issues in the black community and is not trying to repackage other liberation movements as “the new civil rights” while shying away from us. I read Biden right before the election saying that rights for transexual Americans is the “civil rights issue of our time,” and while I have no shade for transexuals or Ride or Die Joe, I’ll be looking for politicians to make firm commitments to black people. Nothing’s wrong with that, and we deserve no less.

    • nathkatun7

Rikyrah, the person you dealt with needs some hearing aid! Didn’t he/she listen to the President put a major emphasis on Equality? Did he/she miss the President’s reference to Selma? Did he he/she miss the President’s reference to Dr. King? Did he consider the President’s choice to use Dr. King’s family Bible, when he took the oath of office, another evidence that the President was ignoring Black people?

As for the Black Agenda, I wish we as Black folks had an agreed upon Black Agenda. So far as I know there is no such agreed upon Black Agenda. I also hope that if we had such an Agenda, our number one issue would not be about denigrating our first African American elected President, and questioning everything he does. The last time I checked, Mr. Obama’s title was President of the United States, and not just President of the Tavis Smiley and Cornel West wing of the whining Black folks.

I am sick and tired of the holier than thou Black folks who constantly criticize the President without acknowledging the political reality he has to operate in. Ironically, most of these Black folks who never miss a chance to attack the President, for not being Black enough, are the same ones who routinely compromise with the white establishment, and especially white dominated academia, so as to retain their high paying jobs.

Please forgive me if I especially refuse to take seriously professors teaching at predominantly white institutions who don’t think that President Obama is Black enough, or is doing enough for Black folks. Other than the late Professor Derrick Bell, who put his money where his mouth was by protesting against Harvard’s failure to hire Black females, I know of no other Professors who have risked their high paying jobs to advance the interests of black folks.Certainly Cornel West is not one of them. If he were he would have joined Professor Bell’s protest. But he didn’t. If I remember correctly, then Harvard Law school student, Barack Obama, courageously came to the defense of Professor Bell.

Behind The Scenes At Inauguration 2013 [MINI MOVIE]
    Jan 25, 2013

    By Smokey D. Fontaine

I missed the first one. When Barack Hussein Obama was sworn in as our first African-American president with an agenda that I believed passionately in, I watched history unfold on a flat screen.

I was not going to miss the second time around. In fact, to make sure I gave myself the most memorable of experiences, I chose to go to the Capitol as part of a radio broadcast team, giving me the kind of 20-feet away access that laypersons – and even fellow journalists – would only dream of.

Let me say this: Folks turned up to be a part of the 2nd inauguration of Barack Hussein Obama with hope in their hearts and a dream in their eyes. America was alive that day in Washington, what makes us great pulsed through the men & women, boys & girls, young & old who had to be exactly where they were in that moment. Exactly where he was.

“With the Bush inaugural we were the 1%,” an African-American Secret Service veteran remarked to me. Staring at the wonderful plurality of the crowd in front of us both, with proud black and brown faces everywhere, he did not want anyone to underestimate how special that was. His 4th inaugural, he clearly remembers looking at the nearly all-white crowd that showed up not that long ago.

“And it probably would’ve gone back to exactly that if Romney won…”

    • isonprize

And don’t NOBODY who was there believe the hype about less people than 2009.

Law enforcement stopped letting people on the mall for safety/crowd control issues. Not only was it the largest crowd to ever witness a US Presidential Inauguration, it was the most diverse. EVER!

Yeah…….the progressive hero!Fox’s Dennis Kucinich (Yes, That Kucinich) Takes A Hard Right Turn On Guns (VIDEO)For decades, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) spoke the liberal mind with clarity and conviction. He was never the most effective Congressman. The vast majority of his bills died in committee, but for most liberals, that was okay. He was our stalwart. He was a proud non-member of the military-industrial complex. He spoke his mind, regardless of whether the sitting President was a Democrat or Republican. It was no wonder that when it was announced that he was joining Fox News, the story was met with some trepidation. My prediction at the time was that he would still basically be the same Kucinich, but with a focus on his anti-Obama rhetoric. It appears that I might have been generous. In a flip of a switch, the Congressman who wore an “F” rating from the NRA as a badge of honor, is suddenly on Sean Hannity’s side on the Second Amendment.more here: http://www.addictinginfo.org/2013/01/27/foxs-dennis-kucinich-yes-that-kucinich-takes-a-hard-right-turn-on-guns-video/

Ariel Sharon: Israeli ex-PM in coma ‘has brain activity’

Ariel Sharon, the former Israeli prime minister who has been in a coma for seven years, has shown significant signs of brain activity, doctors say.

A team of Israeli and American scientists say new tests showed he responded to external stimuli

The activity increased when he was being showed pictures of his family and played a recording of his son’s voice.

The 84-year-old has been in a coma since 2006, when he suffered a massive stroke.

Since then, he has been in a vegetative state, connected to a respirator.

    Encouraging signs’

The doctors at Soroka Hospital in Beersheba said that during tests, “significant brain activity was observed… indicating appropriate processing of these stimulations.”

While the responses did not mean Mr Sharon was likely to fully regain consciousness, doctors said they were “encouraging”.

Suit reveals ties among radical abortion opponentsWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A lawsuit against a Kansas woman who publicly proclaimed her admiration for the man who gunned down one of the country’s few late-term abortion providers is revealing the unwavering support a small group of radical anti-abortion activists has for the imprisoned killer despite an ongoing federal investigation into the 2009 slaying.

Though no federal indictments have been handed down by a grand jury investigating whether Dr. George Tiller’s death was connected to a broader case involving extreme anti-abortion activists, the lawsuit against Angel Dillard is one indication the Justice Department is taking a more heavy handed approach to perceived threats to abortion providers. In addition to alleging Dillard, of Valley Center, sent a threatening letter in 2011 to another Wichita doctor who was training to offer abortions, the lawsuit also highlights Dillard’s relationship with Scott Roeder, the man convicted of fatally shooting Tiller at the physician’s church.more here: http://bigstory.ap.org/article/suit-reveals-ties-among-radical-abortion-opponents

The GOPers absolutely hated the Clintons until it became apparent that Obama was going to win the nomination in 2008. If Hillary runs, they will go back to hating her again. She’ll be like Karl Marx reborn then, and they’ll drag up some fake scandal to try to bring her down.

Ryan was also lying about something else here. He’s pretending to be upset with congressional actions on the debt and deficit when, in fact, he voted for all of the things that really blew up the debt in the Bush years. He voted for the Medicare giveaway, the Bush tax cuts, the wars, and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, and now he’s pretending to be the voice of fiscal reason. House GOP Congresswoman Argues Guns Have Nothing to Do With School Shootings

    By: Jason Easley
    Jan. 27th, 2013

House Republican Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn claimed that guns aren’t part of the root problem of school shootings. Rep. Blackburn tried to argue that guns have nothing to do with school shootings.

Bob Schieffer brought up the completely rational point that the shooter in Newtown would have done a lot less damage with a baseball bat, and was met with the rare combination of insanity and NRA talking points that can only come from a House tea partier. From the point of view of the paid through campaign contributions NRA congressional stooge, the problem with school shootings isn’t the gun, or even easy access to guns. The problem is mental illness. It’s not the gun’s fault that people are crazy. Why are we blaming the poor innocent gun for SHOOTINGS? This is part of the Republican talking point that we need to meet in the middle, and have a discussion about keeping our children safe. However, guns have nothing to do with the problem. This type of absolutism mixed with irrationality is why this nation can’t have a sensible conversation about the role of guns in gun violence.

No one wants to take guns away from anyone, but the moment guns are brought up the far right immediately refuses to discuss the role that access to guns plays in our culture of violence. Video games and television shows don’t kill people, but mentally ill individuals who have easy access to guns and hear politicians fearmongering about threats to their Second Amendment rights might.

Republicans Decide the Solution to Their Problems is to Screw America with a Smile

    By: Rmuse
    Jan. 27th, 2013

Most people would be inclined to agree that being assaulted by a criminal with a smile on their face is still being assaulted, especially if the assailant has a history of attacking them at every opportunity. Whether an attacker is smiling or scowling, the damage they inflict is still painful, and even semi-intelligent human beings would avoid any situation that might give the assailant another chance to inflict harm on them or their loved ones. Politicians learn early on to smile regardless if they are proposing legislation that helps or harms their constituents, and it does not take long for the public to learn that it is the politician’s record and position on issues that matters and not whether they present themselves and their agenda in a friendly manner or with a smile on their face. Republicans have not proposed one idea over the past decade, or longer, that benefits the population, and in fact have been purveyors of pain and suffering for Americans far removed from the wealthiest 1% of income earners and fundamentalist Christian fanatics. After three days of meeting to plot strategies to continue inflicting damage on the American people, the Republican National Committee decided that if they present detrimental legislation with a smile on the faces, their harmful agenda will be embraced by Americans.

The message coming from the 2013 RNC Winter meeting in Charlotte this week is that substantive policy changes are not the answer to garner support from voters because Republican leaders insist there was nothing wrong with their message that lost them the 2012 election, it was how and who delivered the messages of doom. The consensus among GOP leaders is that Americans want to be assaulted by Republicans; they just want them to smile as they implement Draconian spending cuts, lower taxes for the rich, anti-women legislation, and religious edicts straight out of the Old Testament. Republican leadership is so out of touch with the American people, and so stuck on their ideologically backward agenda, that one member said “We can stand by our timeless principles and articulate them in ways that are modern, relevant to our time and relatable to the majority of voters.” They then unanimously approved a resolution by voice vote calling on Congress to defund Planned Parenthood despite a majority of Americans oppose defunding the organization.

There are myriad problems endemic to Republican policies, but primarily they do not comprehend that their agenda and policies are contrary to the will of the people, and they are only interested in serving voters who agree with their platform. New Hampshire chairman Wayne MacDonald said party leaders need to be firm and assertive without being mean-spirited, and asserted that no-one thinks the Republican Party has to change any platform planks because “this party wants to serve everybody that believes in our principles,” and it informs what pundits and political observers have known for some time; Republicans do not want, or intend, to serve all Americans; only those who agree with their policies.

Sen. John McCain On Benghazi: ‘There’s Two Movies Been Made About Getting Bin Laden’During a wide-ranging interview with This Week fill-in host Martha Raddatz, Senator John McCain made, arguably, the most revealing statement about Republican outrage over the September 11 attacks on U.S. diplomatic personnel in Benghazi, Libya that claimed the lives of four Americans. Asked what the recent hearings were supposed to accomplish, given that many of the questions surrounding the attack have already been answered, Sen. McCain complained “What did the President do during this period of time? There’s two movies been made about getting bin Laden with every tick-tock of every minute. We still don’t know what the President was doing.”more here: http://www.mediaite.com/tv/sen-john-mccain-on-benghazi-theres-two-movies-been-made-about-getting-bin-laden/

John McCain’s behavior, since he lost the race for President to President Obama, has made me appreciate the wisdom of the early Christians who included ENVY (jealousy) as one of the Seven Deadly Sins! I can’t recall any other former presidential candidate who lost the election sustaining so much anger/jealousy against a President who defeated him/her.

It seems to me that John McCain is more consumed with his envious hatred of the President than he is about the safety of American people.

Calling for “more truth-telling in the media,” Palin encouraged her fellow conservatives to “step out in faith, jump out of the comfort zone, and broaden our reach as believers in American exceptionalism.” Such a move, she believes, will help in “broadening our audience.”

Conservatives offend brown people, progressives ignore them

Its pretty easy these days to point out the racism on the right. Between the election/re-election of Barack Hussein Obama and the changing demographics, those folks have put down the dog whistles and picked up the fog horns.

Racism tends to look a little different on the left side of the political isle. But today I found a pretty good example of how it plays out. That’s a link to an article on the front page of Daily Kos. The author pulls up lots of statistics in an attempt to make the point that recent elections demonstrate that Democrats can now appeal to their liberal base and win.

What’s interesting is that nowhere in the entire article does the author attempt to define “base.” It is taken for granted (as is shown in the comments) that he means those who dominate the discussion on Daily Kos – white highly educated upper income progressives.

People like that always ignore statistics like the one where President Obama only got 39% of the white vote in 2012. Conversely, he got 93% of the African American vote, 71% of the Latino vote and 73% of the Asian vote. You wanna re-think that idea about who represents the “base” of the Democratic Party?

The author points out that more and more voters are embracing the label of “liberal.” And that is the sole basis for his belief that Democrats can now run on appealing to the liberal base and eschew their attempts to win over moderate voters.

    – – –Former Top Military Officials Back Hagel’s Defense Secretary Bid– —

    – – –Chuck Hagel received two new high profile endorsements on Sunday for his bid to be the next Secretary of Defense. Retired Air Force General Michael Hayden and retired Army General Stanley McChrystal said on CNN’s State of the Union that Hagel is a good choice to take over for outgoing Pentagon chief Leon Panetta.

Hayden, former National Security Agency head during the Bush administration and CIA Director in both the Bush and Obama administrations, said Hagel is someone “you could talk to” and “have an honest dialogue” with. When host Candy Crowley asked the former generals if they see “any red flags” that would disqualify Hagel, McChrystal, most recently the top allied commander in Afghanistan, said “no” while Hayden said, “not at all.”

CROWLEY: From what you know of Chuck Hagel…what sort of reception would he get from the military.

HAYDEN: I think he will be fine. I know Senator Hagel. He was on my oversight committee when I was in the intelligence community. He was a member, and this is not a universal condition, he was a member that you could talk to, have an honest dialogue, not necessarily disagree but on a personal basis, have a candid exchange of views. You could always speak with him and frankly given my time in uniform, that’s a tremendous attribute. So I actually think this will work out well.

    Evening, POU.
Just stumbled on to an article written in October. Read through it, then giggled out loud and SMH. Some folks really didn’t see it coming, did they?:

The Top 20 (Cause 10 Ain’t Enough) Reasons (Excuses) Black Folk Will Give if Obama Loses

I am sorry to say that I did not find Tavis Smiley’s’ HuffPost article funny. As far as I am concerned, it re-enforced many stereotypes about Black people.

      • I didn’t find it “funny”, as in clever, either. What I laughed and shook my head at WAS his pompous, dismissive attitude toward Black voters/Obama voters. He (and so many others) just *knew* that PBO was a fluke, and that the electorate was too lazy and uncommitted to do it again. This article makes Smiley look like a petty, no-nothing hypocrite, not attempting to educate and motivate the electorate to push for an agenda, but reducing their presence to poorly written, passive-aggressive, 20-line “humor.”

That’s been his and West’s gig for the past four years: looking down and finger wagging their supposed intellectual and moral inferiors (including the president). They still see themselves as the gatekeepers of “Black thought” in America. So bitter because the table has been opened up to others, and “Black America” no longer needs them as their interpreters to power.

          YOU have nailed it.

THIS tone is why Tavis was shown the door at the TJMS.

THIS is the contempt he showed for the TJMS audience and has shown Black people since 2007.

The sole patrol is always throwing low-key shade at black people. Their “love” often feels exactly like contempt…

    – – –Arizona Bill Requires Hospitals To Screen Immigration Status Of Uninsured Patients – —

    — —–Hospitals would need to check the immigration status of uninsured patients under a new bill introduced by an Arizona lawmaker. Rep. Steve Smith’s (R) H.B. 2293 would require hospital staff to “reasonably confirm” patients’ status during check-in or treatment, and immediately report those who do not have the required papers to immigration officials.

Smith claimed it is a hospital’s civic duty to check immigration status:
    – – -SNIP – – –

The Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association has already rejected the attempt to turn hospitals into another front for immigration enforcement: “When does this begin or end?” a spokesman said. “What other industry should be screening their customers for citizenship verification?” The National Coalition for Immigrant Women’s Rights and National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health also called the measure “unconscionable” and legalized “harassment.” With roughly 19 percent of Arizona’s population lacking health insurance, the bill could deter many immigrants and their children from seeking care, as well as burden hospitals. — –

    – –A BLACK HISTORY MOMENT [1-26-13]-—Woo! Hoo! :>)

    – —Born On This Day in 1892: Renowned Aviator Bessie Coleman – —

    – — –Bessie Coleman, born Jan. 26, 1892, was a renowned aviator who was the first African-American woman to become a pilot and to hold an international pilot’s license. When she turned 18, Coleman took her savings and enrolled in the Oklahoma Colored Agricultural and Normal University (now called Langston University). She completed one term before her money ran out, and returned home.

In 1915 she moved to Chicago and worked as a manicurist, listening to stories from pilots who had flown in World War I. Determined to become a pilot, she was encouraged by Robert S. Abbott, founder and publisher of the Chicago Defender to study aviation abroad. Coleman received financial backing from a banker and the Defender. She eventually traveled to Paris and became the first African-American woman to earn an international aviation license and also the first in the world to earn an aviation pilot’s license. She later traveled to the Netherlands and Germany to get additional training before returning to the United States, where she did stunt flying and was billed as “the world’s greatest woman flier.”

Coleman developed a reputation as a skilled and daring pilot, who would stop at nothing to complete a difficult stunt. She died in 1926 after an airplane malfunction caused her aircraft to crash at the age of 34.
