Why Do White People Think Mitt Romney Should Be President?
by Tom Scocca
I’m voting for Barack Obama on Election Day. This fact will appear on Slate’s list of which candidates its writers are voting for, a list which will almost certainly look like the 2008 list, which is to say an almost unbroken string of “Obama.” People will look at this list—Obama, Obama, Obama, Obama—and they will say, Look at the Slate writers, inside their bubble.
And they will be wrong. There is a real, airtight bubble in this election, but it’s not Obama’s. As a middle-aged white man, in fact, I’m breaching it. White people—white men in particular—are for Mitt Romney. White men are supporting Mitt Romney to the exclusion of logic or common sense, in defiance of normal Americans. Without this narrow, tribal appeal, Romney’s candidacy would simply not be viable. Most kinds of Americans see no reason to vote for him.

The President believes the only way to create an economy built to last is to build it from the middle out, not the top down.

— – -Your Daily Dose of BuzzFlash at Truthout, via my pal Mark Karlin:
Jon Stewart lacerated the myth of Romney’s alleged expertise as a venture capitalist the other night. (See video here.) Quite simply, under Mitt’s leadership, Bain Capital had a worse investment record than the federal government’s backing of alternative energy companies (e.g., Solyndra).
In fact, Romney’s record at Bain showed him picking firms that went into bankruptcy at three times the rate of the fed record.
– — -SNIP – - -
When Romney’s bankruptcy record, as he ironically promotes himself as a “job creator,” is just about three times the rate of Obama’s as president, it’s clear the “job creator” is really (particularly when combined with his slash and burn labor strategies) a job destroyer. He’s also a liar, and his dissembling is meant to hide one of the greatest myths of the campaign: that private investment is more effective at stimulating the economy, when Romney’s own record as the CEO of Bain Capital shows that it isn’t.

Cheating to Win
Sun Nov 4th, 2012 at 10:19:17 AM EST
It shouldn’t be controversial to say that the Republicans are trying to win the presidential election by reducing the size of the electorate. They passed restrictive photo identification laws which were overturned in one court after another. They restricted early voting and weekend voting, in some cases seeing those decisions overturned as well. The Ohio Secretary of State has defied a federal judge and been reprimanded. He continues to defy him, now issuing a new rule about how provisional ballots will be treated that are contrary to a prior consent decree. At Daily Kos, a diarist writes about spending nine hours in line to vote yesterday, all because Governor Rick Scott has reduced early voting hours and hasn’t provided adequate personnel and machines.
The conclusion is unavoidable. The Republicans are trying to make access to the polls so difficult that people will give up and go home. They are going to try to throw out as many provisional ballots as they can, which are really just votes for the president. They aren’t even pretending that they have persuaded the majority of registered voters to support their presidential candidate. But they are trying to win anyway.
This really ought to be the scandal of the year. Yet, rank and file Republicans seem to be perfectly content with these tactics. It’s as if they believe that the Civil Rights Movement never happened, or never should have happened. They are happy to win the election even if they only win by suppressing the vote of working people and students and the elderly and people of color. It’s disgraceful. When Romney talked about the 47% of Americans who won’t support him, he reflected this attitude. It’s an attitude that says that only Americans in certain income brackets and with certain complexions should have a say in our democracy.
But the truth is that the will of the people should decide who wins elections, not the relative effectiveness of voter suppression tactics.
Nothing new about these Jum Crow tactics to reduce black political power and hence ensure vastly unequal distribution of resources. While the sole patrol spent four years bitching at the first black POTUS and nipping at his heels. Black people seem to be coming out in force because it’s obvious what’s going on in terms of trying to give white voters disproportionate power.
Yep BLACKLASH. We feel that all the crap they have been throughing at PBO is also being thrown at us. Also voter suppresion. Like Rev Al says. Did they think we would let them get away with that. Again I cannot express enough of how proud I am for how we are responding allover.
@NicholsUprising: “Lines as far as you can see for President Obama” in Florida today. Something is happening in Florida.
The reblacktion to Scott an’em’s naked attempts to steal the power of the vote?
This may be their Hail Mary though. It will lose and Obama will have spurred a non-violent people’s revolution. Sorry tension and grandiosity are alternating today Going to visit the elderly parents soon. Usually that is unnerving. Today, I could use the distraction! I’m “on call” for OFA here.
This is a story I meant to relay, but did not get around to. I “hostessed” at a function at the Rehab Hospital I volunteer with a couple weeks ago. It was about the power of hope and caring our facility provides. But the patients attending were not just thinking about the accidents and injuries, but about the need to reelect Obama. “He cares about us!”

Bloomberg’s Out of Control Spending
Sun Nov 4th, 2012 at 08:24:54 AM EST
I don’t mind New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s advocacy for gun control, but no single human being should be able to throw hundreds of thousands of dollars into a congressional campaign regardless of whether they are doing it to fight the National Rifle Association or because they want closer relations with Israel or because they want less scrutiny of their casino empire. Mayor Bloomberg is supporting both Republicans and Democrats, but the problem isn’t who he supports. It’s that he is giving $2 million to a Democrat in Florida and $1 million to a Republican in Illinois and $3.3 million to oust a Democrat in California. He gave over one million dollars to Connecticut Republican Andrew Roraback, and they have never even spoken to each other. How does Bloomberg know that Roraback has the character to serve in Congress? From perusing his website? Who hands a million dollars to someone without even talking to them to make sure they aren’t going to be the next Eric Massa, Anthony Weiner, or John Edwards?
Overall, more than 80% of the dark money that was spent in this cycle went to support Republican candidates. So, I am just guessing that most Republicans are okay with a campaign finance system that so completely favors their side. But they can get a taste of this medicine in a few places from Bloomberg and his big government gun-confiscating socialism. How does it feel to have a billionaire swoop into your district and hand more than a million dollars to the Democrat? If we are going to fix our campaign finance laws, we are going to have to reach out to the Republicans who agree with us that democracy ought to be about equality and not about who can woo the most billionaires. You could even argue that the billionaires who floated Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum’s campaigns cost Mitt Romney dearly by delaying his ability to organize his campaign against Obama and forcing him to squander resources while getting bad-mouthed by fellow Republicans for months on end. Without the Citizens United ruling, Romney would have won the nomination in February. Of course, that’s because he’s a billionaire.

– - -After Republicans Restrict Early Voting Hours, Floridians Wait More Than 6 Hours To Vote – -
– - — Last year, Florida’s Republican dominated legislature “rolled back the number of early-voting days from a maximum of 14 days to eight days.” The result? Floridians are finding it much more difficult to vote, with voters in some counties waiting in line for hours:
Long lines were reported across the state, including a six-hour wait time at one early-voting site in Miami-Dade County. Monroe County Supervisor of Elections Harry Sawyer asked for more early-voting time, but was told by state officials that no emergency existed to justify an extension.
“As state officials, we are bound to follow the law,” Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner wrote Sawyer.

McCaskill claims the support of 48 percent of likely Missouri voters, while Akin trails with 44 percent — a two point uptick for the conservative GOP congressman since PPP’s last poll of the race two weeks ago. Yeah for these elections supervisors finding ways to work around that demonic Governor!
The federal lawsuit says counties should offer absentee ballot voting at local election offices if early voting cannot be extended. Both Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties said they planned to do that.
“I decided to open because we are allowed to do so,” said Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Susan Bucher.
Bucher noted that voting in her county did not wrap up until 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Her office started accepting absentee ballots at 9 a.m.
Christina White, deputy supervisor with Miami-Dade County, said the county also decided to accept absentee ballots for four hours on Sunday at its main office.

That is beyond stupid. I don’t think all of those people died for us to take voting for granted. He needs a rest somewhere. His ODS is too deep.

He’s claiming that us feeling obligated to vote is just as oppressive as Jim Crow. He’s officially a coon.
What these fools should understand is this is not about just NOW. What is at stake is whether a POC is ever given the chance to be considered for POTUS again. They will rewrite the history of his presidency as a catastrophic failure and we should never venture there again. These people need to stfu. Hate to quote GW. They are with us are against us.

He’s just an asshole. I rarely cuss online. Like this is only the second time in 10+ years of online living but it seems necessary.
He’s now a regular front pager at BAR.
How full of your own shit do you have to be to believe some politician will come to you personally and ask you “why didn’t you vote?”
I gotta go ask him “How does a party get more progressive when progressives take themselves away from the party”?
Dear Bitter Boyce:
In a semantic world, you would be correct: our ancestors did fight for us to have the RIGHT to vote. However, as with any other RIGHT, there are expectations that it will be used judiciously, honorably, with dignity and in remembrance of those who toiled, struggled, fought and died for everyone to have them.
The RIGHT to vote IS an OBLIGATION to our ancestors who died in the Middle Passage; to those who endured slavery; to those who fought to live as whole human beings and not 3/5ths of a person; to those who were lynched and the survivors of those lynchings; to those who were slaughtered for believing that they have the RIGHT to live as full American citizens (e.g., Tulsa, OK and Rosewood, FL).

Voters In Miami-Dade Can Cast Ballots On SundayMIAMI (CBSMiami) – In an usual move, Miami-Dade Elections Department will allow voters to cast their ballots on Sunday.
While state law does not permit Early Voting on Sunday, the elections department is permitted to provide and accept absentee ballots.
In honor of the Early Voting hours offered on the last Sunday in 2008, voters can go to the Elections Department in Doral at 2700 NW 87th Avenue to vote by absentee ballot from 1pm-5pm.
The elections department said any voter who shows up in the allotted window will be able to vote by absentee ballot. The voter did not have to request an absentee ballot ahead of time. http://miami.cbslocal.com/2012/11/04/voters-in-miami-dade-can-cast-ballots-on-sunday/
How are absentee ballots counted in FL?
They will be counted starting at 7pm Tuesday. The poll workers will begin feeding the absentee ballots into the machines that read the ballot at that time. Considering the counties doing this are doing so against the wishes of the evil Gov, I’m confident they will be as accurate as humanly possible.
Great! Thanks for the explanation.

ORLANDO, Fla. — A judge extended early voting hours in one Florida county on Sunday after the state Democratic Party sued in an effort to give people more time at the polls.
Some voters had faced waits several hours long on Saturday, the last scheduled day of early voting. The judge ruled on a lawsuit filed late Saturday in Orange County after an early voting site was shut down for several hours. The Winter Park library was evacuated when a suspicious package — a cooler — was found outside. It was later detonated by a local bomb squad.

Does Krauthammer Have a Point?
Fri Nov 2nd, 2012 at 10:34:36 PM EST
I consider Charles Krauthammer to be a very intelligent man. I think he is intelligent, but I also think he is quite devious in the sense that he cannot be relied upon to say what he really thinks. He’s a manipulator. His arguments don’t roll off the top of his head but are prepared meticulously to have the desired psychological impact. If you take him too literally, you’ll conclude that he is either not very bright or that he’s simply crazy. As a result, he can sometimes be hard to gauge.
There is certainly a degree of scare-mongering in his column today. There’s the boilerplate about how Obama is turning America into a typical European socialist state filled with people who can’t tie their shoes without some assistance from a bureaucrat. We all know that is food for the sheep. But maybe he actually believes that Obama represents a real threat to the Reagan Revolution.
Reaganism’s ascendancy was confirmed when the other guys came to power and their leader, Bill Clinton, declared (in his 1996 State of the Union address) that “the era of big government is over” — and then abolished welfare, the centerpiece “relief” program of modern liberalism.
In Britain, the same phenomenon: Tony Blair did to Thatcherism what Clinton did to Reaganism. He made it the norm.
Obama’s intention has always been to re-normalize, to reverse ideological course, to be the anti-Reagan — the author of a new liberal ascendancy. Nor did he hide his ambition. In his February 2009 address to Congress he declared his intention to transform America. This was no abstraction. He would do it in three areas: health care, education and energy.
To be more clear about it, Krauthammer also made this statement: “Reagan was an ideological inflection point, ending a 50-year liberal ascendancy and beginning a 30-year conservative ascendancy.” I agree with that statement, but it seems clear that Krauthammer sees next Tuesday’s election as the potential endpoint of the conservative ascendancy. I’d like to believe that he is correct. As for the next part, I believe he is correct:
If Obama loses, however, his presidency becomes a historical parenthesis, a passing interlude of overreaching hyper-liberalism, rejected by a center-right country that is 80 percent non liberal.
When you put it that way, I guess this election in kind of important.
What say you?

In response, Republican-affiliated election officials in Miami-Dade have effectively extended early voting from 1PM to 5PM today by allowing “in-person” absentee voting. But this accommodation will only be available in a single location in the most Republican area of the county.
Nearly every city within 5 to 10 miles of this location — including Hialeah, Miami Springs, Sweetwater and Miami Lakes — has a substantial Republican voter registration advantage.
The most populous city among those is Hialeah where Republicans, powered by a large Cuban community, have an overwhelming registration advantage of nearly 20,000 voters. There will not be an opportunity for in-person absentee voting in downtown Miami or South Dade, where there are heavy concentrations of Democratic voters.more here http://thinkprogress.org/election/2012/11/04/1136371/south-florida-county-extends-early-voting-but-only-in-one-gop-stronghold/?mobile=nc

Cleveland (CNN) – She and Joe Biden may now be BFFs. A 17-year-old high schooler and the Vice President of the United States could end up being “best friends forever” after Biden surprised the young lady with the ultimate offer – and the pictures to prove it.
Being VP has brought out the best in Joey B.

This bullshit is disgusting! After only 2 hrs.
Voters Overwhelm Dade Elections For Sunday Voting
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – In an unusual move, Miami-Dade Elections Department decided to allow voters to cast their vote by absentee ballot on Sunday.
By 2:30 p.m. nearly 200 people were in line. Elections department officials said they were so overwhelmed they were forced to close their doors.
By 3 p.m., the doors had re-opened and people in line were given tickets for absentee ballots.
While state law does not permit Early Voting on Sunday, the elections department was permitted to provide and accept absentee ballots.
Miami-Dade elections officials said voters who still want to vote by absentee ballot can also pick one up on Monday at their headquarters in Doral at 2700 NW 87th Avenue.
Voters can either fill out the absentee ballot at the elections department or take it home, fill it out and have it returned by 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Voters can no longer request absentee ballots by mail
Glad they allowed folks in line to vote, but towing away cars of folks in line ain’t a good look.
Scott should be in jail.
Scott should be in jail.
I still have hope he’ll get there.
My blood pressure is so borderline these days I can’t go near twitter because of tweets like this. There just isn’t enough room on there to get a fuller picture.
One of the downsides to Twitter.
This could have been avoided if Scott acted like a decent human being and a patriot instead of a crook and extend early voting uniformly as his TWO Repub antecedents did. However, since this is a crook that robbed Medicare, I hope people remember in 2014 to vote his crooked heart out.
I’ve lived in this area off and on for about 15 years. The President is getting probably 60-80% of those votes.
Damn! They really are trying to take us back to the Jim-crow days.
Joseph M. Cabosky @CabPolitical
Dems end on high note on last day of early voting in NC. Their margin bounces back from 15.8% to 16.2% http://www.cabpolitical.com/2012/11/04/dems-end-on-high-note-in-north-carolina-early-voting/ …
Over 62% of likely NC vote in, whites still only 67.4%, well off 72% ’08 figure. Afr. Amer. at 27.4%, was 23% in ’08 http://www.cabpolitical.com/2012/11/04/dems-end-on-high-note-in-north-carolina-early-voting/ …
Cab says if the white vote stays < 70%, PBO will win. Everyone who's eligible to vote should vote, even if it's for Mittens. However it seems as if the white vote, even if it goes up to 70%, isn't going to be enough to make this a winner for Mittens, because the black vote is shaping up to be bigger than 2008.
The brown one too.
Yes, I totally forgot about the Latino vote in NC–that is a big factor.
Remember too that the number of Asians increased in the US, outpacing forecasts. Different segments of that population trend D. I think about the huge Indian population in Virginia. There are also those who just love this President who might not have been tapped in politically before.
Yeah, this is what many here are afraid off, that the election will be stolen. They are being so dam blatant about supressing the vote, it’s disgusting. They all should be thrown in jail.
And yeah, I don’t and never have trusted Clinton. I really wish PBO would stay away from him.
Whatever Clinton’s getting out of all this campaigning is NOT to the detrement of PBO. We need to stick together for 3 more days.
I’m glad PBO is hanging with him for the next 3 days but I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop wrt to Bill. He always has some drama following him. Hillary has earned the President’s loyalty, but Bill, not so much. The fact that PBO is still side-eyeing him, shows the trust is still not there for him.
Totally, 1000% agreed.
Listening to the Hollywood event. Poor PBO loosing his voice but sounding so good. It’s wrong to have a prez this smart and this good looking!
That’s what the other side is thinking! If he is going to be as much of an egghead as Adlai Stevenson/Jimmy Carter, must he be so fine too?! And the son of a white woman so he’s got their daughters and nieces baracking? I think they will cynically offer up another hairdo without a brain come 2016. We haven’t seen the last of Lyin, methinks.
Getting a cramp from crossing my fingers that Ryan looses twice on Tuesday.
From your mouth to God’s ears.
