Sunday Jazz Brunch: Dexter Gordon

Good morning Pragmatic Obots.

Dexter Gordon (February 27, 1923 – April 25, 1990) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist and an Academy Award-nominated actor (Round Midnight, Warner Bros, 1986). He is regarded as one of the first and most important musicians to adapt the bebop musical language of people like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Bud Powell to the tenor saxophone.

    Jay-Z knocks Occupy Wall Street
In a new interview, the legendary rapper says he never threw his support behind the protest movement because he didn’t understand what it stood for.

By Rich Schapiro / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Jay-Z says Occupy Wall Street had a fatal flaw: Its 99 messages.

The legendary rapper, in a new interview, says he never threw his support behind the protest movement because he didn’t understand what it stood for.

“What’s the thing on the wall, what are you fighting for?” Jay-Z told The New York Times in a wide-ranging interview.
…“I’m not going to a park and picnic — I have no idea what to do,” Jay-Z said, recalling a conversation with Simmons about joining the movement.
“I don’t know what the fight is about. What do we want? Do you know?”

…He said Occupy Wall Street’s blanket demonization of the rich is un-American.

“I think all those things need to really declare themselves a bit more clearly because when you just say that ‘the 1 percent is that,’ that’s not true,” he said.

“Yeah, the 1 percent that’s robbing people, and deceiving people, these fixed mortgages and all these things, and then taking their home away from them, that’s criminal, that’s bad.

“Not being an entrepreneur. This is free enterprise. This is what America is built on.”

I’m a Nas partisan, but Jay Z is really really growing on me; riding for PBO, saving the Fela musical. starting to really like this guy:

…“I’m not going to a park and picnic — I have no idea what to do,” Jay-Z said, recalling a conversation with Simmons about joining the movement.

      Sorry, he’s simply right.

      • gc

I don’t know who or what “Nas” is, but Jay has always imptressed me, for the flimsiest of reasons. I see intelligence in his eyes.
But it is not just music from the AA scene. I listen to Classical (yeah, I know – how old IS she/ :) )

Hold on to your horses Jay Z. You are black and you support this president. The occupy nuts are going to talk about you, your wife, your baby and your mama.

Oh and I am not one bit surprised that the idiot Simmons would be an occupy dumb ass. This is a man that said Trump is not a racist.

Some Ga. Schools Make Mandarin Mandatory
    by Adam Ragusea

Public schools in Macon, Ga., and surrounding Bibb County have a lot of problems. Most of the 25,000 students are poor enough to qualify for free and reduced lunch, and about half don’t graduate.

Bibb County’s Haitian-born superintendent Romain Dallemand came into the job last year with a bag of changes he calls “The Macon Miracle.” There are now longer schools days, year-round instruction, and one mandate nobody saw coming: Mandarin Chinese for every student, pre-K through 12th grade.

“Students who are in elementary school today, by 2050 they’ll be at the pinnacle of their career,” Dallemand says. “They will live in a world where China and India will have 50 percent of the world GDP. They will live in a world where, if they cannot function successfully in the Asian culture, they will pay a heavy price.”

Great article out of Canada..this one’s for you crazycanuck:

An Island son and his White House buddy

…The president has a particularly strong fan club in North Saanich, home to Liz Beatty, the mother of one of Obama’s closest White House aides, Marvin Nicholson.

You might recall Nicholson’s story: From St. Michaels University School and jobs at the Cordova Bay and Prospect Lake golf courses to caddying for Sen. John Kerry in Nantucket.

Worked in Kerry’s office, then on his 2004 presidential campaign, then got picked up by Obama’s team at the beginning of 2007. The two-passport Victorian and the Chicago senator hit it off.

Nicholson became the guy who keeps Obama loose, the one with whom he chooses to golf or shoot hoops.

“He and the president are extremely close,” Beatty says. “They’re the best of friends.”

Appointed White House trip director after the 2008 election, Nicholson assumed the duties of Obama personal aide Reggie Love after the latter left for business school last winter.

“Marvin now has an office just outside the Oval Office,” his mother says.

Ann Romney Says Mitt Is Much Maligned, Emphasizes ‘Goodness of This Man’

NASHUA, N.H. – As night fell on a baseball stadium here in New Hampshire, Ann Romney rallied a crowd of thousands, hinting that with two months to go until the election, she’s already got her eye on an inauguration party in January, even if she believes her husband is “being maligned.”

“Let’s see what Mitt can do, and we’ll have this great joy together in January, and have a wonderful party in Washington, D.C., and celebrate the next president of the United States,” said Mrs. Romney, who introduced her husband this evening at the rally. The couple was positioned just behind home plate on the baseball diamond.

    read more: http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/09/ann-romneys-says-mitt-is-much-maligned-emphasizes-goodness-of-this-man/

    • conlakappa

She’s gross. Maligned? In what respect, Miss Ann? Asking your husband to provide his tax returns isn’t maligning. Asking him what his policies woud be is not maligning. Asking him to take a consistent stand on anything is not maligning him. Or would you prefer that the nation just shut up and eat our brioche, Marie-Antoinette? For someone whose life is so steeped in privilege, the persecution complex runs deep.

      • Ebogan63

Asking him to stop being a lying sack isn’t ‘maligning’ either, it’s callin’ his azz out!

        Know the difference Miss Ann!

        • conlakappa

I do not think the word means what she thinks it means.

    • GN

lmao. They *stay* copying the Obamas.

    • jds09

This is the “White Horse Prophecy” stuff again. She’s been with the Bishop since she was a teenager surrounded by a culture that believes Mitt is “The One”. “This great joy together in January” and “a wonderful party in Washing, D.C.” sounds like she’s in fantasy land. We will witness a meltdown of epic proportions as reality intrudes. It’s not gonna be pretty.

      • TyrenM

If u wanna ride, don’t ride the white horse!

    • Tafr

Very telling that all she can think about is the inauguration party. I tell you Miss Ann wants this more than her husband. She must have fits thinking about our beautiful first lady in the white house. I bet she obsessively thinks about living in the white house. They do not want to govern they want that status of being the first couple. Too bad for her the people of this country have other ideas.

      • JojoRaze

I think she wants to be Michelle, I really do. She always dresses like Michelle even though it doesn’t look right when she does. She’s a rich woman, she can’t get a personal shopper to get her a style that fits her?. That bright yellow dress in Poland and even the Oscar de la Renta shirt dress with the belt around it (a clear, though unnecessary nod to Michelle) was so transparent. And Michelle just knocked it out the park with a new look and a dress that Ann couldn’t ever pull off.

        • aleth

she is obssessed with the couple in the white house. Mitt will do anything to give her what she desires even if it means stealing an election.

They are weird and creepy people

      • conlakappa

I am having a different interpretation of her focusing on the inaugural party [go 'head, Miss Ann, say ball]: Mormon insecurity when it come to the social aspect. Any celebration of a true adherent wouldn’t have caffeine products, meat, or alcohol. Sounds like a hoot, doesn’t it? I have been to a Mormon wedding reception that was made very fun by the music. Somehow, I don’t think the tunes at a Mitt-a-bration would be as interesting or danceable.

Has anyone seen promos of Marie Osmond’s new show? She’s practicaly unrecognizable. I get the feeling that she went to Miss Ann’s, um, face doctor.

    • JojoRaze

The comments on the article are good, too. This one in particular just brings up something about Mitt I havent thought of.

      From commenter, The Women’s Vote:
At 200 million a year, they should have bus loads of stories and philanthropic foundations of the way they have made this a better planet, a better country . —-aaannddd…..he has none. He’s done nothing, he’s not created a single foundation, he’s not helped a single kid go to college, he’s not help fight a disease, he’s done NOTHING. He’s Mr Potter from Its a Wonderful Life. He’s just greedy and selfish. period.

All rich people from Oprah, to Bill Gates to Warren Buffett–even David Koch has his name on the Lincoln Center building here–have foundations to show their philanthropy. Oprah has a school and you know 99% of the anonymous donations to HBCUs is Oprah and Warren Buffett is engaged in ending hunger and disease all over the world, and Bill Gates is involved in education and hunger and disease as well, and Mittens has nothing like that despite his vast riches. The Mormon Church does count because as the Lord said if you only give to those who give to you, you haven’t engaged in true charity. It is telling that Mittens doesn’t engage in philanthropy.

      • Miranda

I think it is absolutely profane that Mitt and Ann tout their tithes to the Mormon church as some kind of great noble gesture on their part and actually seem offended that people are not impressed by it. There are elderly black people on fixed incomes that give till it hurts to their small humble churches that can barely keep the doors open. I know plenty of them. There are people that make a way out of no way to help those in need all day every day and here come blonde Leona Hemsley to tell me how they are so charitable? Heifer please.

      • rikyrah

fabulous comment you found, and that you made.

I will remind folks once again that, for all the money Mormon, Inc takes in..

they give LESS THAN ONE PERCENT TO THE NEEDY.

and no, I’m not counting what they give to Mormons.

what kind of ‘church’ gives LESS THAN ONE PERCENT TO THE NEEDY

        • cosine

I did not know this about donating less than 1% to the needy. Franchise religion, free “volunteer” labor, with propagation of selves and cash as it’s only purpose.

      • dannie22

    • creolechild

BTW, Ann, there’s no crying in baseball.

    • rikyrah

see, she’s asking for folks to hurt her fucking feelings. man in a vulture capitalist, and you are nothing but a spoiled, entitled woman who has never worked a day in your life, after being dropped off at 17 to the Romneys like a sacrifice to the altar.

      • BoomerGal

On point! This strikes me as “Comment of the week.”

      • cosine

        Gooood – “like a sacrifice to the altar” . . .

    • JojoRaze

Makes me appreciate Michelle more. I wished Michelle would have whined more about how the media was treating her and Barack but you know black people can’t whine.

BUT Michelle straight up said, “Buddy, you signed up to run for president, you have to take the punches, cause this job ain’t no joke. I wouldn’t vote for you Barack if you don’t know how to take the punches.”

People, esp black people also asked Michelle if she wasn’t fearful that people would assassinate PBO, implying they’d be scared to vote for Barack since they were scared white folks would kill him. She always said “This is politics and people will say what they want to say, we have the secret service but we will keep it moving by clearly articulating our policies, which I can talk about well, and the American people will make a decision as to who has their best interests at heart.” Michelle NEVER whined, whinged or complained in public, EVER! She told people to kick Barack’s tires and ask for receipts because that’s what she would do.

With Ms. Ann, everyday is call the wahmbulance day. I mean really, Becky Sue in Tennesse and Lynette in Arkansas is not gonna feel this entitlement at all, since they had a child at 18 with the man giving them grief and they’ve had to work at the Waffle House or IHOP since she was 21 because they had to care for her kids. Let Bill Clinton come around them and remind them what PBO did for them, making sure their child got access to SCHIP, or making sure that extra $40 per week was in their check from 2009 until now and how starting in 2014, THEY’LL finally get health insurance from Medicaid or so cheap since the goverment is giving them money to get it and it’ll get dicey for Mittens. They are not gonna win the white women’s vote at all even in the South. I’ll put money on that!

Paul Ryan Won’t Reject Debt Deal Mitt Romney Dismissed

Putting himself at odds with his GOP presidential running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan this morning on “This Week” refused to tell me that he would reject a hypothetical debt reduction deal — composed of spending cuts and tax hikes by a ratio of ten to one – that Mitt Romney famously rejected during a presidential primary debate last year.

“You know, it depends on the quality of the agreement. It depends on the quality of the policy. Our negotiators in the super committee offered higher revenues through tax reform. John Boehner did as well. So George, what really matters to me is not ratios but what matters is the quality of the policy,” Ryan said.

….I also pressed the Wisconsin congressman to tell me what specific loopholes a Romney White House would attempt to close as part of their tax plan. Romney has not specified which deductions and exemptions would be eliminated. Ryan declined to outline those, but said there was no “secret plan.”

—–Mitt Romney is trying to rebut Democratic attacks on his tax proposal by vowing that he would not raise taxes on the middle class – but again declined to go into specifics.

Pressed by NBC’s David Gregory in an interview that aired Sunday on “Meet the Press,” the Republican presidential nominee said he would be able to lower individual tax rates and remain revenue neutral, since he would limit tax deductions for high-income earners that would not change the amount of taxes that the wealthy would actually end up paying. Under his plan, the middle class would not be affected, he insisted, and that would also spur economic growth.

Governor, where are the specifics of how you get to this math?” Gregory asked. “Isn’t that an issue?”

“Well, the specifics are these which is those principles I described are the heart of my policy,” Romney replied. “And I’ve indicated as well that contrary to what the Democrats are saying I’m not going to increase the tax burden on middle income families. And I see it on this side of the aisle too. Russert was the epitome imo of the lazy Beltway journalist. All he ever did was scan the front pages of the NYT and Post to get his questions.

I’ll never forget Bill Moyers asking him why didn’t he call Cheney out for his lying. He said nobody ever came to him with the information. Hello? Journalist? Right then and there NBC executives should have fired him.

Oh and let’s not forget him asking every Black Person he met what they thought of some comment (negative of course) some other Black Person made.

Russert was not a serious newsman in the least. He was a guy who relished the seat he was sitting in and the ability to hold court with his Beltway buddies.

Pat Robertson joins Romney at Virginia campaign stop

As Mitt Romney hit the campaign trail in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Saturday, sitting in the front row, very quietly, was televangelist Pat Robertson. Robertson did not appear at last month’s Republican National Convention, but WAVY-TV’s account of Romney’s speech suggests the GOP presidential nominee’s remarks were tailored to reach out to Robertson’s Christian fundamentalist fanbase — particularly a knock at the Democratic Party’s disagreement over whether to include “God” in its platform at its own national convention this past week.[....]

Obama Camp Touts Romney’s Debate Strength September 4, 2012, 11:47 AM

Raising expectations for your opponent ahead of a debate is an ancient political art, and a supremely confident Obama team almost pulled it off on Tuesday.

Two Pictures Shatter the Mainstream Media Myth of an ‘Obama Enthusiasm Gap’

Check out all of these totally bummed out, unenthused Obama supporters in St Petersburg, Florida today for Obama’s rally. Man, if only Obama had passed out free mitts! He mighta been a contender.[....]

The mainstream media is very busy concern trolling the clearly hyper patriotic and all-American Democratic Convention, which managed to take back foreign policy, social issues, the military, the troops, and keeping Americans safe from the Republicans. It wasn’t just that the Democrats put on a good show, it was that the show was a joyous celebration of the last four years of their policies. This administration has been champions of our veterans, taking care of our troops, protecting women’s rights, getting rid of DADT, giving DREAMERS a chance, trying to put American back to work, championing and protecting our manufacturing industry, honoring the American ideals of opportunity and hard work, civic responsibility — including taking care of the weakest among us — and economic fairness.[....]

Hands waving, people crying, women cheering, chants of “four more years” — it’s all so flat, according to the media. I mean, heck, wouldn’t you rather be on Ford field with Romney and his woebegone, angry and confused followers who still don’t know who he is or what he stands for, but they do know that he is their only choice if they really, really hate what they’ve been told about the fictional Obama.

    Bad chair.

Excuse me, but why did the Cleveland NAACP find it necessary to invite Kasich to their celebration?

For some reason the NAACP wants to invite GOP in to their homes. Why is my question.

Did u read Roland’s tweets on the great Gov Kasich? He should be ashamed of himself.
Roland was a keynote speaker so u know the “party” was going to be dud.

Better in the sense that they’re willing to walk back the minimums made mandatory by their odious brothers in the same party? How, pray tell, can a governor have a heavy hand in sentencing reform–beyond commuting sentences? You gonna toss it out there, Ascotty, attribute immediately.

Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973. So, what does Mitt mean when he says, “It’s up to the Supreme Court”– other than if he’s elected he will try to repeal it.

Romney: It’s My ‘Preference’ That The Supreme Court Reverse Roe V. Wade

Mitt Romney was diplomatic in his response to questions about abortion and Roe v. Wade in an interview on “Meet the Press” Sunday, saying he is pro-life and prefers that the Supreme Court will overturn Roe. Democrats made their pro-choice position a centerpiece of their convention in Charlotte earlier this week.[....]

[....] “And I believe that people of good conscience have chosen different paths in this regard. But I am pro-life and will intend, if I’m president of the United States, to encourage pro-life policies.” Romney declined to say he would “fight” for Roe v. Wade to be overturned, saying instead it was up to the Supreme Court.

Not political news, but cool just the same. A while back, I was wondering is Sean Connery was alive, I think I was watching a James Bond marathon or something. Everyone told me that he was still alive, but even if they hadn’t, I need wonder no more.

Connery and Fergie surprise Andy Murray

Sir Sean Connery and Sir Alex Ferguson shocked Scottish tennis star Andy Murray by making an appearance at his after-match press conference in New York.

Murray had just won through to the final of the US Open when the two Scottish legends gatecrashed his news conference, much to the tennis player’s delight.

    • Joy

Always preferred Sean Connery as James Bond over Roger Moore. Very sexy old man.

    • sagittarius

Sean Connery is still fine at 82 years old. To quote Miranda last week, ‘he could get it’. Yep, I’ll stand in line and wait my turn.

      • rikyrah

        sag,

I thought it was only me and Mr. Connery.

I felt the same way about an older Cary Grant.

        couldn’t help myself…LOL

        • sagittarius

          rikyrah -

There is only one James Bond – and that is Sean Connery. Daniel Craig may come close, but the rest are pretenders to the throne. That. Is. All.

          • rikyrah

I still remember the story from the Bond Producer – he didn’t know if he had chosen right with Connery. He put his wife in a screening room, by herself, and told her to watch the movie.

He said the way his wife looked when she came out of the movie – told him all he needed to know about whether Connery was the choice.

          • Aquagranny911

Si, Si! I read some of the Bond books before the first movie came out & Sean Connery fit my metal image of Bond perfectly.

Ryan was on This Week and Romney was on MTP and they kept contradicting each other.

Romney refused to eliminate deductions for the wealthy.
Ryan says in a Romney administration, he’s going to make sure as VP he gets congress to eliminate tax deductions and loopholes for the 1%.

Romney doesn’t plan on ending the Afghan war soon. Ryan on This Week said he and Romney support Pres. Obama’s 2014 Afghan war deadline.

Romney says he would keep some provisions of ObamaCare but still completely eliminate ObamaCare. Ryan says he and Romney would 100% repeal ObamaCare.

The funniest thing was Ryan said Pres. Obama has no foreign policy record. Stephanopoulos had to remind him about Osama Bin Laden.

On MTP, Romney says he’s not running to slow the rise of the oceans or heal the planet. He’s running for people…um Mitt slowing the rise of the oceans and “healing the planet” does help the people.

    • malletgirl02

Regarding the last part of your post. I needs to be explain to people if the oceans rise and the environment is the destroyed the earth will be able to heal itself over a period of thousands and millions of years. However, if the worst happens it will be the end of humanity, humans won’t bounce back like the earth itself will. We can see the impacts of climate change right now. famines and weather disasters.

Ann Romney flip-flops: ‘We have not had a financial struggle in our lives’

During her Republican National Convention speech last month, Ann Romney suggested that she and her husband had once been so poor that they “ate a lot of pasta and Tuna fish” and their “dining room table was a fold down ironing board.”

In an interview that aired Sunday on NBC, Ann Romney distanced herself from that version of history.

“Mitt and I do recognize that we have not had a financial struggle in our lives,” the Republican presidential nominee’s wife explained. “But I want people to believe in their hearts that we know what it is like to struggle. And our struggles have not been financial, but they have been with health and with difficulties in different things in life.”

          • conlakappa

We had already heard about the stock options though. Team Mittens might not be able to pivot with any ease or grace but they are all about the reactions. Maybe the maid from that era didn’t have the confidentiality agreement that the more current ones do and was about to spill it.

          • Aquagranny911

I bet they got everyone who ever worked for them to “self deport.” It’s hard to believe that no one has come forward to spill the real frijoles.

        • jds09

Doesn’t that basement apartment thing sounds like it came from a movie? I’m thinking it was a Doris Day/Rock Hudson film.

        • Aquagranny911

“Basement apartments” sometimes called “garden apartments” in some tony Boston neighborhoods don’t have rats or roaches. The plumbing, heating & cooling work & some have maid quarters.

I was thinking about the difference in the two conventions and have surmised that when a party spends decades demeaning the arts and Hollywood, dismissing diversity, devaluing education, doubting science, denying facts and reality, using the troops, coddling racists and crackpots, engaging in magical thinking, worshiping at the altar of greed and selfishness, don’t be surprised when that party’s convention reveals that to the world and equally don’t be surprised that the opposing party who embraces all that they reject also reveals that to the world to devastating effect. (Sorry for the run-on sentence. lol)

Cherokee Nation chief calls President Obama best president ever for American Indians

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker is here to help nominate President Barack Obama for a second term, and he doesn’t hold anything back in his praise for the president.

Obama, Baker said here Tuesday, “is the best president for Indian Country in the history of the United States.”

Through the years, Indian tribal chiefs have met a lot of U.S. presidents, but the meetings with Obama have been more than just superficial photo opportunities, Baker said.
“This president has made promises to Indian Country, and he’s kept them,” Baker said. “He is a promise keeper. And that needs to be recognized and rewarded.”

Ryan: ‘I Have More Foreign Policy Experience’ Than Obama Four Years Ago

[....] “I have more foreign policy experience coming into this job than President Obama, who sat on the Senate Foreign Relations committee, did coming into his,” Ryan said on “Face the Nation.” “I’ve voted to send men and women to war. I’ve been to Iraq and Afghanistan. I’ve met with our troops to get their perspectives. I’ve been to the funerals, I’ve talked to the widows, I’ve talked to the wives, the moms and the dads.
