Sunday Jazz Brunch- Open Thread

Happy Sunday P.O.U. Lurkers and regulars!  Today we going to enjoy the sounds Miles Davis.

Sketches of Spain

Miles Dewey Davis III (May 26, 1926 – September 28, 1991) was an American jazz musician, trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. Widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Miles Davis was, with his musical groups, at the forefront of several major developments in jazz music, including bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, and jazz fusion, dal jazz, and jazz fusion.

On October 7, 2008, his 1959 album Kind of Blue received its fourth platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), for shipments of at least four million copies in the United States.  Miles Davis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Davis was noted as “one of the key figures in the history of jazz”. On December 15, 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a symbolic resolution recognizing and commemorating the album Kind of Blue on its 50th anniversary, “honoring the masterpiece and reaffirming jazz as a national treasure.”

Chris Hayes had a great panel: Maya Wiley of Center for Social Inclusion, Sam Seder, Judith Browne-Dianis of Advancement Project, Michael Grunwald, author of The New New Deal along with a guest, Tanya Wells. Ms. Wells and her husband lost their jobs and were on food stamps along with Medicare and student college loans. She was terrific speaking on what struggling members of the middle class are facing.

    Must-see tv.

    – – –Gibbs: Ryan should ‘thank’ Obama for strengthening Medicare – —

    – — –Senior Obama campaign adviser Robert Gibbs defended the administration’s record on Medicare from GOP attacks on Sunday, saying that Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) should “thank President Obama” for strengthening the program.

During a campaign stop in The Villages, Florida Saturday, Ryan appeared with his mother, who is on Medicare, and continued hammering the administration for a $716 billion reduction in the program’s spending, claiming Obama “raided” Medicare to pay for his own healthcare reform bills.

Gibbs pushed back on those claims during an interview on Fox News Sunday. “If he wants to protect Medicare for his mother he should first of all thank President Obama for what he’s done over the past few years to extend the life of the Medicare trust fund, to help seniors with their prescription drug costs to help seniors get free preventive care. ” said Gibbs.

    Destroy the $716 Billion Lie

    by BooMan
Sun Aug 19th, 2012 at 08:48:14 AM EST

The 716 billion dollar lie is the central line of defense. It’s like the Republicans’ Maginot Line. If the lie can be breached with the blitz of truth, the GOP’s argument will fall faster than France before Guderain’s tanks. Oh, wait. I’m casting us as the Nazis in this instance. That won’t do.
But you get my point, right?

In 2010, the Republicans ran political advertising against Democrats who voted for the Affordable Care and Patient Protection Act, claiming that they had cut $500 billion from Medicare. That was pretty rich considering that the Democrats had actually tried and failed to expand Medicare eligibility. The charge was (and still is) a lie. But that doesn’t mean that the ads were not effective. They were very effective, which is why the Republicans think they can deceive the people again this time around.

The $500 billion number changed to $716 billion on July 24th, 2012, when Speaker Boehner received a letter from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) in response to his request on the cost of repealing the Affordable Care Act. Specifically, the CBO wrote this:

Team Obama Calls Out Romney For Lack Of Transparency In Press Conferences

Stephanie Cutter, deputy campaign manager for Obama’s campaign, fought back against accusations that President Obama does not make himself available enough to the Washington press corps by attacking Mitt Romney’s openness about his own campaign in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday.

“You know, Mitt Romney might have had two media availabilities [this week], but what did he tell you, Jim, in those media availabilities?” Cutter said. “He told you he wasn’t going to release his taxes because he was afraid of getting attacked. And then he spouted off lies about the president’s Medicare system. So do you find that media availability really useful, if he’s not being transparent about his own policies and distorting the president’s?”

“Well, Stephanie, I’m going to take a pass on answering your question and say that we’re out of time,” host Jim Acosta said in response.

On Saturday’s edition of NBC’s Today Show, host Lester Holt asked NBC political analyst Mark Halperin whether the debate over Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney‘s tax returns has “jumped the shark.” Halperin responded that the story still exists largely because “the press still likes this story a lot,” and “the media is very susceptible to doing what the Obama campaign wants, which is to focus on this.”

Gibbs was asked by Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace if the remark, made by Biden at a campaign stop in Virginia before a racially-mixed audience last week, was “race baiting.”

“No more race baiting than when John Boehner says ‘let’s unshackle Wall Street, let’s unshackle big business,’” said Gibbs.

“Waitress Moms” Are The New NASCAR Dads

[….] Some surprising poll results show President Obama gaining ground with white working class women in those “key swing states” of Electoral Coll[e]ge obsession. National Journal calls them “waitress moms:”

Obama’s overall situation among the working-class women is still precarious.[….] But Obama leads among them in Pennsylvania (five points), Ohio (six) and Wisconsin (nine). And the surveys suggest Obama is gaining ground with these women in most states. Although the polls aren’t exactly comparable, Quinnipiac surveys earlier this year showed Obama running at only about 40 percent among those hard-pressed women in Ohio and Pennsylvania and down near one-third in Florida.

The new surveys show him winning just over half of them in Ohio and Pennsylvania and a little over two-fifths in Florida. Why, oh why, would white working class women be turning against Governor Romney? Could it be that “waitress moms” haven’t had a pay raise in twenty years?[….]

How Republicans Are Trying to Sell Dying Younger to Voters

[….] In light of the Paul Ryan pick as Mitt Romney’s VP, the strategy being employed by the GOP is to get behind the destruction of Medicare that Ryan has spearheaded by completely lying to and deceiving the American People, pasting Orwellian bumper stickers saying “Choice!” and “Saving Medicare!” on their plan to take away medical care from the poor and elderly.

If this wasn’t such a literally life and death issue, it would be ridiculous. What they are literally doing, all of the facades aside, is trying to sell dying younger and devastating bankruptcies to 99% of Americans so that the top 1% can pay less taxes and be wealthier. An absurd but indisputable fact.[….] let’s look at the simple facts about the Romney/Ryan/Republican plan to destroy Medicare, a stated goal of all of them.[….]

    – – –Paul Ryan Supported Economic Stimulus Under Bush: ‘You Have To Spend A Little To Grow A Little’– —

    – — GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan spent much of the last week trying to explain why he signed multiple letters seeking $20 million in stimulus funds for an energy company in his district. Ryan is a staunch opponent of President Obama’s stimulus program, which those funds came from, claiming that stimulus is a “wasteful spending spree.”

As it turns out, Ryan’s stimulus hypocrisy extends back at least an entire decade. In 2002, Republican President George W. Bush proposed a similar — if less ambitious — stimulus plan to the one President Obama signed in 2009. Like Obama, Bush sought to goose the economy through an influx of public sector cash. His stimulus plan included an extension of unemployment benefits and a plan to mail checks directly to millions of Americans. Ryan took to the House floor to defend this plan, accurately noting that additional government spending would help move the economy out of a recession:

    – – -SNIP- – The things we’re trying to pass in this bill are the time-tested, proven, bipartisan solutions to get businesses to stop laying off people, to hire people back, and to help those people who have lost their jobs.
We’ve got to get the engine of economic growth growing again because we now know, because of recession, we don’t have the revenues that we wanted to, we don’t have the revenues we need, to fix Medicare, to fix Social Security, to fix these issues. We’ve got to get Americans back to work. Then the surpluses come back, then the jobs come back. That is the constructive answer we’re trying to accomplish here on, yes, a bipartisan basis.

    – – —Romney Adviser Says GOP Would Extend Medicare’s Solvency By Raising The Eligibility Age– —

    – —<i>Earlier this week, Mitt Romney pledged to restore Obamacare’s savings in the Medicare program — a move that would move up the insolvency date of the program’s trust fund from 2024 to 2016.

On Fox News Sunday, Chris Wallace asked Romney senior adviser Ed Gillespie how the campaign would extend the life of the program if the Romney-Ryan reforms won’t kick in until 2023, long after Medicare reached insolvency. Gillespie replied by insisting that a Romney administration would raise the age eligibility to 67:

WALLACE: But the problem is, those reforms don’t kick in until 2023. It doesn’t affect any seniors or anybody close to being a senior. But that doesn’t solve the Medicare part A problem which kicks in in 2016. What are you going to do to keep solvent between 2016, after you have repealed Obamacare, and 2023?

    — –SNIP- —

Numerous studies have shown that booting 65- and 66-year-olds from Medicare would in fact have only modest savings, while raising health care costs across the board for seniors.

“You would almost have to be as blind as a bat not to see the politics,” said Anthony, former chairman of the county Democratic Party. “Listen, call it what it really is.”
“What it really is” to many Republicans is simply an attempt to help President Barack Obama win re-election.
“I guess I really actually feel we shouldn’t contort the voting process to accommodate the urban — read African-American — voter-turnout machine,” said Doug Preisse, chairman of the county Republican Party and elections board member who voted against weekend hours, in an email to The Dispatch. “Let’s be fair and reasonable.”
He called claims of unfairness by Ohio Democratic Chairman Chris Redfern and others “bullshit. Quote me!”

No, whats bullshit is your side changing the rules and gaming the system to help grease the skids to give your nominee Ohio on November 6th. That’s whats bullshit. There is nothing fair or reasonable about these voter laws. None whatsoever. They know that their calls against “rampant voter fraud” are full of grade A bullshit. None of these laws prevent voter fraud in any real way. People can forge documents and make fake ID cards that can pass through those E-Verify systems. No, this is all about suppressing enough Democratic voters to be able to make sure that they have a chance in hell of winning in the future.

These people knew what the problem was since 2000. They knew that Republicans couldn’t keep winning by a state and be thought of as legitimate Presidents. They knew it. No matter how much they hate Barack Obama’s 2008 win, they knew that HE WON. 365 electoral votes were won on November 4, 2008. Clinton won 370 and 379 respectively in a three person race, so they held on to that to balance out their belief system. When Bush won his by 271 and 286 respectively, they knew they were in trouble.

They have the same information that we have in regards to demographic changes and changing attitudes of minorities, women and the LGBT community. Their dogwhistles are getting harder to hear the younger the electorate gets, so they need ships horns to blare out their Lee Atwater “southern strategy” Its failing them, and they know it. They see that their policies are toxic in the ever growing voter population and that their gambits on working the media over are futile, considering that Barack Obama has gone around the National Press Corps.

If you can’t change minds to attract folks to your side, you change the electorate. Paul Weyrich telegraphed it back in the 1980’s. He didn’t want everyone to vote, because he knew their chances of getting into office go down as the voter population goes up. That is the clarion call of the right wing in this nation. “We can’t win if you Negroes, Mexicans, Jews, Women, Homosexuals, Orientals, Catholics and Foreigners vote, because then it takes the vote out from the good Christian White man in this nation. We already have Republican politicians spouting off about overturning the Voting Rights Act of 1965. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but thank God Bush signed it in 2005, because I doubt the Republicans would even let it get a vote today.

We need to start telling this truth, otherwise we are going to have an American Apartheid with our votes.

    – – – –Cutter: Obama interviews with ‘People,’ Entertainment Tonight also ‘important’>- – –

    — —Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter on Sunday defended President Obama against claims he has avoided answering questions from Washington’s press corps, saying his interviews with local and entertainment media sources were “equally important.”

    —- – -SNIP- – –
On CNN’s “State of the Union,” Cutter dismissed suggestions those interviews were more important to the campaign than national news media but said they had a valuable role in the president’s messaging.

“Not more important, but equally important, and that is where a lot of Americans get their news,” said Cutter. “And I think the president is going to continue doing that.”
    – – -SNIP —
Cutter also said that Obama was also far more transparent than his GOP rival Mitt Romney.

“Mitt Romney might have had two media availabilities, but what did he tell you,” said Cutter. “He told you he wasn’t going to release the taxes, because he was afraid of getting attacked. And then he, you know, spouted off lies about the president’s Medicare system. So do you find that media availability really useful if he is not being transparent about his own policies and distorting the presidents?”

    — – — Don’t MESS with Ms. “LaBLADE!!” – – -HAH!

    • Translation: Chump they offer a much bigger audience that you can only dream of.

Love the way Team Obama is not only driving a wedge between the Beltway bozos and local and entertainment media but the way he’s gotten them to show their contempt for the latter two. That’s not going to sit well with reporters at People and Entertainment Tonight.

Cable News and the rest of the Beltway have been trying to horn in on their territory for years, Now that the President gives them the same legitimacy they’re mad. Well guess what? Nobody cares. There’s a war brewing.

Assange tells Obama to end WikiLeaks ‘witchhunt’

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange urged President Barack Obama to end the US “witchhunt” against his whistleblowing website, in a speech Sunday from the balcony of Ecuador’s London embassy.

“I ask President Obama to do the right thing, the United States must renounce its witchhunt against WikiLeaks,” said Assange, making his first public statement since being granted political asylum by Ecuador on Thursday.

Assange praised the “courage” shown by the Latin American nation’s President Rafael Correa in giving him asylum, a move which has angered Britain which has said it will continue to seek his extradition to Sweden.

Obama says, “Come outside on the street and say that, punk!”

I would be like ok. Come to Washington and say that. Come right up to the White House gate.

    • This dweeb leaks classified information and runs to Ecuador like the wind was chasing him but he wants The President to do the right thing. I wonder if it’s dawned on Bradley Manning yet that he got used like a generic box of kleenex

      • Admiral_Komack

Nahh, Bradley Manning is dumber than a box of rocks.

I just said to the husband this morning while watching a clip of the metric assload of British police outside the embassy, “he’ll somehow make this about the President.” Where’s his bestie Moore now, busy sending him care packages?

      • Tafr

Yea where has Moore been? I remember Moore and Olberman going full on tea bagger on those women that claimed Assange raped them. I tell you Olberman lost all kinds of respect when he went there with Moore. Moore lost my respect years ago with his nonsense.

        • conlakappa

He’s been silent of late, which makes me believe he’s back at that fat farm [not a joke, factual and where he was last year] or at his luxury lakeside mansion. Wasn’t he going to confront one or more of those women? Perhaps he did and she/they gave him irrefutable evidence that his cause celebre was indeed crim’nal.

    • AxelFoley

PBO to Assange: Run up on me, homie. I wish you would.

    • Tafr

Girl, Assange thinks that he is a rock star. The only ones checking for his ass are firebaggers, the unicorn left, Cenk and Seeder, with their punk asses. Dude is accused of rape yet he has the nerve to bring up the President of the United States. We have come full circle when the idiots on the far left worship at the feet of a accused rapist. What is funny is that they have the nerve to call us Obama apologist. I would rather be an obot than defend a creep that has been accussed of rape.

Bradley Manning is where he needs to be. I wonder if he is allowed to listen to Lady Gaga while he is locked up? Little punk got pissed off because he was not treated the way he wanted to be treated. I guess he thought the military was suppose to hold his hands while he “figured himself out” I cannot shake the feeling that Manning put folks in danger with that little stunt of his. I hope his ass spends the rest of his days in prison.

    PBOMB- —OH! — – annnnd- – ‘BOUT that “CHAINS”- — – DISTRACTION- –

    – — Cutter: Biden ‘chains’ charge a ‘distraction’—-

    — — –President Barack Obama’s deputy campaign manager said Sunday that Vice President Joe Biden’s “chains” comment was a “distraction from the larger point” he was trying to make.

“Let’s look at what the vice president said. Speaker [John] Boehner and even Paul Ryan have been traveling this country talking about the need to unshackle the private sector, to unshackle the financial industry,” Stephanie Cutter said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” B”And the vice president was just taking that metaphor a step further and talking about wanting to put other people in shackles. And the word that he used, chains, is a distraction from the larger argument.”

    – — —SNIP- – —

“If we want to talk about words on the campaign trail that are poor choices of words, let’s talk about Mitt Romney’s: When he’s been traveling for the last few years basically calling the president un-American, that the president wanted to make this a less Christian nation,” Cutter said. “Those are poor choices of words, and that’s what we find completely offensive. So this faux outrage by Mitt Romney complaining and whining about the tone of this race is really completely hypocritical.”LOL- – –

Fact Sheet: Paid Sick Days: Paid Sick Days Work for U.S. Employees and Employers

[….] About half of all workers on U.S. payrolls today are women. Moreover, the majority of mothers, whether married or single, work outside the home, meaning that in most American families, all of the adults work and there is no full-time stay-at-home caregiver. This is not just a “women’s issue” since the changing nature of our families impacts men and women, adults, and children. Indeed, as our population continues to rapidly age, more and more workers are finding themselves providing elder care to their aging parents as well.

While our workforce and families have changed dramatically, our nation’s labor standards have not been updated in decades. There are sensible policies that would assist families while simultaneously helping employers’ bottom lines, but both employers and policymakers have been slow to recognize how fundamentally our lives have changed and what needs to be done to make our workplace policies match the way that we live and work today. In this series we identify five issues facing workers today: paid sick days, paid family and medical leave, workplace flexibility, child care, and the wage gap.[….]

    Guess who……

We have a lot of laid off workers, and more layoffs are occurring. And we know, as a historical fact, that even if our economy begins to slowly recover, unemployment is going to linger on and on well after that recovery takes place. What we have been trying to do starting in October and into December and now is to try and get people back to work. The things we’re trying to pass in this bill are the time-tested, proven, bipartisan solutions to get businesses to stop laying off people, to hire people back, and to help those people who have lost their jobs. . . .

    Tell’em Gibby Gibbs!

Gibbs Blasts Romney for Using ‘Right-Wing Nut Jobs’ Like Trump

Senior Obama campaign adviser Robert Gibbs said on Sunday that he would not be “lectured” about running a negative campaign while GOP hopeful Mitt Romney continued to use a “right-wing nut job” like so-called birther Donald Trump.

During an interview on Fox News, host Chris Wallace noted that Romney had been accusing President Barack Obama of waging “a campaign of division and anger and hate.”

“I’m not going to get lectured by Mitt Romney or anybody on the Romney campaign about the tone of this campaign,” Gibbs explained. “This is a guy that’s flown all over the country saying he’s not sure whether the president believes in America.”

“[Romney is] auctioning off dinners with birther-in-chief, right-wing nut job Donald Trump, who still questions whether or not the president of the United States was born in America.”

Bain Capital’s Link To OpSec Smears

[….] On Friday’s edition of Hardball, Michael Smerconish hosted non-partisan spokesman for OpSec — Gabriel Gomez, and Jon Soltz from VoteVets for a discussion of the OpSec Swiftboat effort.

It’s interesting to hear Gomez say he donated to the Obama campaign in 2008 ($230) and fail to disclose his firm’s relationship to Bain Capital, a firm Mitt Romney still has much invested in. He attacks Soltz and the 220,000 members of VoteVets as partisan, but nary a peep from Mr. Gomez about his associations.

So be enlightened. Gabriel Gomez is a principal of Advent International, a Boston-based private equity group. All of these equity firms are intertwined with each other through various deals, but Advent and Bain trumpeted their joint acquisition of RBS WorldPay in 2010.[….]

Look at this watch…feel your eyelids getting heavy. You are getting sleepy…sleepy. Now, when I snap my fingers you’ll forget all about the subject we were discussing earlier. (SNAP!) Oh yeah, so when IS Mitt going to release his tax returns! HAHAHAHAHA….

Todd: Seems Like We’re ‘Getting to an Expiration Date’ on Romney’s Taxes

From this Saturday’s The Chris Matthews Show, it seem the Villagers believe the Obama campaign is going to quit going after Mitt Romney on the issue of his taxes once the Republican convention rolls around. I’m not sure why they would do that but that was the consensus here.[….]

I’m not sure when they taped this show and if it was before or after his interview with NPR, but as of this Friday, Major Garrett claimed he’d never even heard about the issue with the tax returns from 1999-2001 and the issue in Massachusetts. You can read more details about that here[….]

My guess on Todd’s hackery here is this is what we’re going to hear out of him once the convention rolls through. This is an old issue and it’s time to move on. And he’ll have plenty of help as well. Here’s to hoping the Obama campaign ignores him and so far this election season, I’m happy to say they’ve been doing a lot of that and ignoring the cries by the beltway Villagers.

They may want to forget but I have not forgotten. Here’s just part of a fax I sent out to various news organizations and others:

I think it is very important and a matter of national security that Romney release his tax returns. We need to know where his money is invested, to whom he might be beholden, if he might be open to coercion or black mail by foreign interests. All high level government employees with top security clearance are vetted in this way. He should be no exception.

The American people are not looking for a job with Romney’s companies. He is looking for a job with us. We have every right to not only ask but even demand that he be transparent in his current dealings, past business & personal finances by releasing his tax returns.

The Obama campaign has said it would be satisfied with just the prior 5 years. I actually want at least 10 years. Either of these would include 2009. Mitt Romney’s full tax return for 2009 would show for better or worse whether he received amnesty to avoid felony tax evasion. I think this information is important to the American people.

      etc, etc, etc,

Inquiring minds do still want to know….

      I will keep on faxing!

    – — —Small Government Republicans Have Created a Bureaucratic Voter Suppression Nightmare – – –

    – — – —I spent the day reading about people’s personal experiences in adventures to register and acquire ID needed to vote. They include stories of American citizens who are eligible to vote, have voted for decades and who will be denied the vote under this morass of insanity established by the Republicans. It seems ironic that the advocates of “small government” have established a nightmarish and confusing bureaucratic process that will deny Americans the ID they need to exercise their franchise in the name of solving the non-existent problem of voter ID.

The story goes that voter ID protects the weight and value of eligible votes. This conveniently overlooks the fact that denying eligible Americans the right to vote is its own kind of election fraud.
