Mitt Romney: Mothers Should Be Required To Work Outside Home Or Lose Benefits

The remark, made to a Manchester, N.H. , audience, was unearthed by MSNBC’s “Up w/Chris Hayes,” and will air during the 8 a.m. hour of his show Sunday. Ann Romney and her husband’s campaign fired back hard at Rosen following her remark.

    • GN

Ann Romney herself has stated that she doesn’t work: “No, I did not work. Mitt thought it was important for me to stay home with the children…” From the same interview in 1994 in which she described herself and Mitt as “struggling” college students who were forced to live on stock which they periodically cashed in. This whole flap is a bunch of bs; whether Rosen misspoke or was too harsh or whatever, Ann Romney herself has said she doesn’t work, so why is the media pretending that her outrage is legitimate?

      • Admiral_Komack

“Oh, Mitt…(sob) I had to cash in more stock today…”

“There, there, dear; have some Cabernet Sauvignon.”

        Sure, Willard.

There is no Republican War Against Women…riight.

How many faces does Willard have, anyway?

        • GN

Their version of slumming was living in a college apartment, neither working during school, benefiting from the largesse of Mitt’s rich daddy and his stock investments. If these people don’t have a seat…

      • Admiral_Komack

        Because…because…shut up, that’s why!

        • GN

Seriously, all these lefty media outlets need to let Mr. and Mrs. Etch-A-Sketch speak for themselves. PBO is never going to attack the spouse of an opponent, no matter how out of pocket, and his campaign won’t either. Will never do it, because of how people did Michelle, so those complaining about the PBO campaign’s response to this flap should direct their requests towards lefty media outlets and blogs, as we’re not as nice as PBO.

      • isonprize

And raising children and managing a household is just the easiest thing in the world to do!! It’s not real work at all. Nnnaaawww, not at all.

Laundry, putting clothes in drawers and closets, grocery shopping, making beds, cleaning bathrooms, changing diapers, cooking breakfast, lunch dinner and snacks, helping with homework, getting kids ready for school, mowing the lawn, driving the kids to sports games and birthday parties, washing windows, changing lightbulbs, attending school meetings, music lessons

I’m sure Ann Romney did all this non-work herself. SURE she did…

        • GN

She has completely contradicted herself; Mitt too. They’re FOS.

          • conlakappa

They’ll be really sketchy [there’s that sentiment again] on the details because it pushes the ball down the road: exactly how much help did she have with all those boys? And when did that allow her time to pursue dressage?

      • And that’s why Dems should’ve taken a pause and looked for these contradictions before rushing to play Captain Save-A-Miss Ann.

      • conlakappa

Or the media has edited it to have the soundbyte that was just the right size to cue the outrage and unleash the soldiers of imagined cultural/class wars. Same as it ever was…

    • Too bad this wasn’t found when Ann Romney tweeted her “Damsel In Distress” signal to the media.

    – – –Analysis: Obama leads in projected electoral vote totals – —

    – – —The AP looks at the state of the presidential race and outlines the battlegrounds — and finds that President Obama leads the likely Republican nominee (at this point probably Mitt Romney) by a significant margin.

According to the AP, the GOP has 188 electorate votes that are either solidly Republican or leaning Republican. Obama has 242 electoral votes in safe Democratic or likely Democratic states, leaving 104 electoral votes in states that are purely tossups. 270 electorate votes are needed to be elected president. — –

No surprises here, but the AP outlines the battleground states:

Colorado (9) — Long a reliable GOP state, but Colorado’s conservative profile is changing. An influx of young professionals and Hispanic voters were keys to Obama’s victory in 2008. The economy has hurt him standing. Female voters in vote-rich Denver suburbs are likely to be key.

Florida (29) — Florida is the prime target for both campaigns. Obama won in 2008, but the housing crisis, high unemployment and gas prices are dogging him. Romney won the primary in January and has picked up endorsement of freshman Sen. Marco Rubio. Obama’s organization has a big advantage six months out.

Summit leaders increasingly want to end war on drugs

    – – –With an election year well under way, President Obama went to the Summit of the Americas in Colombia determined to talk about trade deals and the economy. Unfortunately, many of the other leaders wanted to talk about the failed war on drugs and legalization, reports the LA Times. “In spite of all the efforts, the illicit drug business is still buoyant, drug addiction in all countries is a serious public health issue, and drug trafficking is still the main provider of funding for violence and terrorism,” said Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.

“Legalization is not the answer,” said Obama, citing “the capacity of a large-scale drug trade to dominate certain countries” as “more corrupting than the status quo.” Obama added he was open to a discussion of whether the drug war is “doing more harm than good in certain places.”

I’ve complained a lot about the Republican primary cold opens, but this sketch was good. Mitt tipped the waitress with money in a sealed envelope, telling the waitress to give it to her husband since he’ll know better what to do with it (“Don’t spend it on birth control!” Santorum yelled after her), and were joined by Bill Hader’s Rick Perry, who regretted constantly “taking a deuce every time [he opened] his mouth” during the campaign season.

Oh, Kristen Wiig’s Michele Bachmann and Keenan Thompson’s Herman Cain also showed up, and the whole gang participated in a heartfelt rendition of Green Day’s “(Good Riddance) Time Of Your Life.” Good writing, solid impressions, the song is a joke unto itself, and it didn’t overstay its welcome. It’s a miracle! And good riddance to you, Republican primary season!

    – –The Titanic At 100 Years: We’re Still Ignoring Warnings, This Time It’s Climate Change, Says Director James Cameron – —

    – — — –One century ago this weekend, the great “unsinkable” ship ignored warnings of ice bergs in the vicinity, maintained a high speed, hit an iceberg because it couldn’t change course fast enough, and sank. Most passengers died, in large part because there weren’t enough lifeboats.

The New Yorker and the Washington Post have devoted major columns to “Why we can’t let go of the Titanic” and why ”fascination with it seems to be” unsinkable.

Director James Cameron offered his own answer this week, in Titanic: The Final Word with James Cameron on National Geographic Channel, which I’ve transcribed here. Cameron, who has also released a 3-D version of his epic block-buster movie on the doomed ship, made the connection between what happened on the Titanic and our climate predicament:

Part of the Titanic parable is of arrogance, of hubris, of the sense that we’re too big to fail. Well, where have we heard that one before?

There was this big machine, this human system, that was pushing forward with so much momentum that it couldn’t turn, it couldn’t stop in time to avert a disaster. And that’s what we have right now. — – RE-THUGS!!!

Within that human system on board that ship, if you want to make it a microcosm of the world, you have different classes, you’ve got first class, second class, third class. In our world right now you’ve got developed nations, undeveloped nations.

You’ve got the starving millions who are going to be the ones most affected by the next iceberg that we hit, which is going to be climate change. We can see that iceberg ahead of us right now, but we can’t turn.

    – –Denying Racism! Tulsa Alleged Shooter Claims He Is Not A Racist? (DETAILS) – – –

    – – —Alleged murderer in the Tulsa, Oklahoma shootings of 5 African-Americans, Jake England, has released a tape attempting to defy claims that he is a racist.

19-year old Jake, along with his alleged accomplice Alvin Watts, has been charged with 3 counts of first degree murder and hate crimes by Tulsa County District Attorney Tim Harris.

    As reported by CNN:

Clark Brewster, lawyer for 19-year-old Jake England, told reporters Friday he would not comment specifically about the April 6 shootings that left three dead and two others wounded in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

He did show a video of an interview his team conducted and recorded with England from jail, in which the suspect described the trauma of watching first his father and then, nearly two years later, his girlfriend being shot dead a few feet away from him.

England also talked of growing up and living in North Tulsa, which has a large African-American community, and saying he had friends of all races.

“I always got along with everybody. It didn’t matter what color he was.”

That view is starkly different from the portrayal of England offered by prosecutors, as well as in the probable cause affidavit that led to the arrest of him and 33-year-old Alvin Watts.

Community activist Al Sharpton spoke on the charges saying:

“We’re glad that prosecutors filed first-degree murder and hate crime charges. We’re glad that they’ve made that decision in the right direction today.”

Our condolences are with the families who lost loved ones as a result of these shootings. – —AMEN

    Paul Ryan Gets Slapped Down

    by BooMan

Sun Apr 15th, 2012 at 10:36:11 AM est

I’m just guessing here, but I think more Catholics will nod their head in agreement with the following than did when the Church got upset about contraceptive coverage in health care plans.

Nearly 60 prominent theologians, priests, nuns and national Catholic social justice leaders released a statement today refuting Rep. Paul Ryan’s claim that his GOP budget proposal reflects Catholic teaching on care for the poor, which he made in an interview earlier this week with the Christian Broadcasting Network. The group of Catholic leaders — including a former high-ranking U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops official, a priest in Rep. Ryan’s district and the leadership team of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas — called on Ryan to “reconsider his radical budget proposal and refrain from distorting Church teaching.”

“If Rep. Ryan thinks a budget that takes food and healthcare away from millions of vulnerable people upholds Catholic values, then he also probably believes Jesus was a Tea Partier who lectured the poor to stop being so lazy and work harder,” said John Gehring, Catholic Outreach Coordinator at Faith in Public Life. “This budget turns centuries of Catholic social teaching on its head. These Catholic leaders and many Catholics in the pews are tired of faith being misused to bless an immoral agenda.”

The leaders wrote: “Simply put, this budget is morally indefensible and betrays Catholic principles of solidarity, just taxation and a commitment to the common good. A budget that turns its back on the hungry, the elderly and the sick while giving more tax breaks to the wealthiest few can’t be justified in Christian terms.”

Mahablog has the screen capture. The Wall Street Journal actually used the headline: Winning the War Against Women for an editorial explaining how Republicans can win women over to their side. I know it’s supposed to be ironic or something, but its real irony is unintentional. Did you know, for example, that one of the biggest problems facing women is that they can get paid overtime if they work over 40 hours a week in a wage-paid job? Did you also know that the reason some women can’t afford to work is because their husbands make too much money? Well, it’s true, and it’s all part of the Democratic Party’s war on women.

Next week the Journal will explain: Winning the War Against Minorities and Homosexuals.

    I can’t wait.

    We Don’t Need No Education
By Betty Cracker April 15th, 2012

North Carolina Rep. Virginia Foxx went on convicted felon G. Gordon Liddy’s wingnut talk radio show last week to denounce all these students and recent college grads who are bitching about their student loans:

I went through school, I worked my way through, it took me seven years, I never borrowed a dime of money. He borrowed a little bit because we both were totally on our own when we went to college, totally. […] I have very little tolerance for people who tell me that they graduate with $200,000 of debt or even $80,000 of debt because there’s no reason for that. We live in an opportunity society and people are forgetting that. I remind folks all the time that the Declaration of Independence says “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” You don’t have it dumped in your lap.

Of course, the expense today’s students incur is a bit more steep than the cost of obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Dinosaur Husbandry during Foxx’s youth, even spread out across seven years. How much more? It’s hard to do a direct comparison since not all of the chiseled stone tablets used to record educational expenses in Foxx’s day have been digitalized. But here’s a chart that illustrates how tuition costs have risen since 1985:

Could a near 600% increase have something to do with ballooning student indebtedness? Possibly! Here’s the punchline: Foxx chairs the House Subcommittee on Higher Education. Hahahaha!

    • conlakappa

Foxx:Subcommittee on Higher Education:Passportless Helms:Senate Foreign Relations Committee. She’d have to flex a little more to even achieve dim. How much is she pocketing from Wachovia/Wells Fargo/whatever it’s called today? They wrote the book and brokering student loans.

What Would it Take to Get a Real Child Care Conversation in this Country?

    By Sara Mead

One final thought about Mitt Romney and the war on most moms: In the same video clip referenced below, Romney also brags about increasing spending on child care assistance to help these moms of 2-year-olds go back to work. But we know that states have been cutting childcare assistance, thousands of families have lost services or been placed on waitlists, and Romney’s own budget proposals, by squeezing the federal domestic funds that are the major source of childcare subsidies, would further worsen the problem.

And I’m somehow skeptical that expanding access to childcare for working families is going to play a prominent (or any) role in Romney’s agenda—no matter how much he may want low-income moms to experience the “dignity of work.” Yet, as mind-boggling and frustrating as this ridiculous debate over the past week has been, if it yields just a little bit, just a smidge, of real national attention and better conversation about the challenges facing “working families” (whether both or either parents work), childcare, and how we as a society (not just government and policy) do and do not support families and kids, that would be completely worthwhile. I realize that’s probably a completely insane hope, but there’s something about a beautiful spring morning in D.C. that can make you think the craziest things are possible.

It’s worth remembering, of course, that, during the Nixon administration, the United States came thisclose to having a national childcare policy that would have given working families access to high-quality, developmental childcare. In the late 1960s, Nixon and his administration supported an expanded federal role in childcare, citing both the educational needs of young children and a growing demand from working mothers. But by 1971, when Congress passed the Comprehensive Child Development Act, Nixon, eager to solidify connections with conservative Christian voters who had contributed to his 1968 victory, vetoed it. Nixon’s veto message, written by Pat Buchanan, bemoaned the “family-weakening implications” of a “communal approach to child-rearing,” setting a tone that continues—despite the evidence—to characterize debate about childcare and the family today, as can be seen in this week’s hullabaloo over Ann Romney and working moms.

    • Aquagranny911

Family, family, family….Repugnants are all about “family” until they need to support policies or pay taxes that would really help all those families out there who need it.

They adore the “children” as long as these children are still in the womb. Once the children emerge, these goatfiggers could give one flying roasted fig whether these precious children starve, go naked & homeless or receive no real education except how to clean toilets or harvest crops.

These slime sucking gotfigging GOP care about no families but their own.

    Hold Your Horses, Now

    Posted by Bon Tindle

Gay rights organizations are criticizing President Obama for his refusal to sign an executive order forbidding federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Obama aides delivered the message to gay rights groups yesterday, saying they want Congress to pass an anti-discrimination law.

“Our organizers and activists are really angry about this,” said Heather Cronk, managing director of a civil rights group called GetEqual. “It’s really worrisome that the White House is not taking a stand on this.”

Okay, the strategy makes sense. Obama is about to campaign, so it’s a good time to pressure and ask questions. Everyone knows this is a hot button, with Republicans taking a loud stance against gay rights and Dems afraid to touch the subject in some cases.

But guys, give Obama the benefit of the doubt, and if you want to help the cause give him a bit of space. If he wins a second term and has nothing to fear, I have zero doubt that he is going to put some stupidity in its place. To the utmost of his ability, he has already shown he is in favor of fair treatment and choice for people whenever possible. By pushing the issue it could force him into arguments that could actually backfire. Because let’s face it, Obama is the best shot many groups have of representation. Right now it makes sense for him to do his best to prepare for stage two.

After seeing how Republicans attacked him for every single decision he made, in some instances it is simply better that he play it safe. He has shown no animosity or lack of respect for gays or women, so it’s time for us to rally behind him and let him know we’re there. He may not be perfect, but he tries. He’s the best chance we have of climbing out of this mess.

    • conlakappa

Officials continue to investigate whether the crimes committed by Jack England, 19, and Alvin Watts, 32, were racially motivated, but with evidence showing England wrote on his Facebook page his dad was “shot by a F—–g N—-r”, prior to going on the killing spree, Southern Poverty Law Center senior fellow Mark Potok says the answer to whether this was a hate crime is undeniable.

    – – – – SKIP- – — – –

FBI statistics show the number of hate crimes in which the aggressor has an anti-Black bias has fallen over the past few years. In 2008, the number of reported hate crimes against Blacks was 2,284. In 2009, it was 2,284, and in 2010, the most recently reported year, it was 2,201. Though numbers have fallen on paper, Potok says studies show the actual number of incidents is 20 to 30 times higher than the reported FBI numbers, suggesting the number of hate crime incidents could be the same as prior years or even on the rise.

“Studies by the Department of Justice show hate crimes reported by the FBI grossly underestimate the level of hate crimes in the America,” Potok says. “There are a large amount of problems at the departmental level where administrators may write up the crime as simply an assault or murder, and the statistics never make it to the hate crime level.”

    – – – –THIS- – – — ->What is factual, however, is that hate-crime groups have been on the rise. According to research conducted by the SPLC, hate groups have been rising steadily dating back to 2000. Recently, the organization counted 1,018 hate groups, their highest number to date. Potok points out the radical right, or “hate groups and the so-called malicious patriot groups,” have grown astronomically in the last three years.

    – – —Bill Cosby: Trayvon Case About Guns, Not Racism — –

    – —-Bill Cosby argues that the Trayvon Martin debate should focus on guns rather than race, the AP reports. In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” today, Cosby said that accusing George Zimmerman of racism solves nothing. “What is solved by saying, ‘He’s a racist? That’s why he shot the boy.'” To Cosby, the real reason Zimmerman shot Martin is “this,” he said, sticking out a finger like a gun barrel.

“What is he doing with it, and who taught him and told him how to behave with this” weapon are important questions, said Cosby.

I think the ‘real’ Hillary can be a lot of fun! She’s having the best time she ever thought she would have as Sec’y of State. I still don’t like her dog-whistles during her presidential campaign, but I’m warming to her as she gets the State Dept. job done! She also respects PBO. As I’ve said in other comments, “Iron sharpens iron’

She’s to the point now where she knows she’s good. She’s doing the damn thing and she’s at peace with herself. I honestly don’t think she gives a damn what Bill does now. I don’t think it’s worth her time, energy or money to divorce him. Besides, it may sound silly, but I really do think they are friends.

    – – —-Mitt Romney senior adviser Ed Gillespie struggled to defend his campaign’s central piece of evidence supporting its claim that President Obama is waging a war on women today. The claim — that 92 percent of jobs lost under Obama where lost by women — has been called highly misleading and “mostly false” by Politifact (twice), the Washington Post’s fact checker, an AP fact checker, and even the rabidly conservative Daily Caller.

Even Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace saw the problem with the claim and pressed Gillespie when he mentioned the figure this morning. “It is not true,” Wallace said of the larger Romney argument, calling the 92 percent figure a “little bit of an accounting trick” and noting that “all the independent fact checkers have said it’s misleading.”

The best defense Gillespie could muster was to claim that some of the economists quoted by the Washington Post’s fact checker were liberal. Watch it:

CARTAGENA, Colombia — President Barack Obama, speaking for the first time about allegations that Secret Service agents hired prostitutes, said Sunday that “of course I’ll be angry” if those accusations are proven true by an investigation.

Obama said the agents represent the United States and are supposed to conduct themselves with the highest levels of dignity anywhere in the world. “Obviously, what’s been reported doesn’t match up to those standards,” Obama said in a news conference wrapping his appearance at a Latin America summit.

Miami-Dade fire captain on Zimmerman charges: Blame ‘sh*tbag’ parents of ‘our urban youth’

The Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue Department is investigating a Facebook post by one of its captains that seems to blame the shooting death of Trayvon Martin on the “shi*tbag parents” of “our urban youth,” and the “ghetto hoodie look” of young black men like Martin.

The entry was posted on the personal Facebook page of Miami-Dade fire captain Brian Beckmann. The Facebook page bears the same profile picture as the entry, which appears to have been deleted, but which was captured in a screengrab sent to theGrio.

The page’s profile entry lists Metro-Dade Firefighters Local 1403.

The entry appears to have been created on Wednesday, the night State Attorney Angela Corey announced she would file second degree murder charges against George Zimmerman in Martin’s shooting death.

After Florida Shooting, N.R.A. Crowd Sticks to What It Knows

ST. LOUIS — Inside the seven-acre showroom at the National Rifle Association’s annual convention here during the weekend, firearm enthusiasts filtered in and out of the sea of booths displaying handguns and the holsters designed to hide them.
Eager to explain the benefits of carrying a concealed weapon, hikers discussed how they feared bandits more than bears on the trail. Aging men rattled off hypothetical situations requiring self-defense; the details varied, but all involved some version of a younger, more muscular aggressor.

Yet with the gun lobby gathering just days after George Zimmerman was arrested in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed teenager in Florida, there was a new potency to such contingencies as many gun owners wait for more evidence about the killing to emerge.

“People here are definitely thinking and talking about it,” said Terrence Mayfield, 61, who has a permit to carry a concealed firearm in Florida. “This whole thing rests on who threw the first punch. Either the gun saved Zimmerman’s life or we had a cowboy, someone who thought because he had a gun things could escalate.”

    – – –$26,659: Our 2011 Medical Expenses – – –

    – — – –Yes, you read that right. And we had insurance coverage for everyone last year, including daughter, 16, and my son who is 23 years old. Let me break it down for you:

    – – -SKIP – – –

Our medical costs in 2010 were $18,636. The principal reason why our medical expenses in 2011 increased by such a large amount was because our insurance premiums increased from roughly $7,000 in 2010 to over $14,000 in 2011.

This same crappy, expensive health insurance will likely be cancelled because my wife’s former employer has filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and has filed a motion with the bankruptcy court to cancel all medical benefits for retirees and their families. More. . . .

    – – -SKIP – – – –

Because the insurance exchanges required under the Affordable Care Act will not go into effect until 2014, it is unlikely that my son and I can find insurance until then, assuming that the Supreme Court doesn’t find the ACA unconstitutional. I find this ironic, considering that the following information about “Romneycare,” the health care program put in place in Massachusetts when Mitt Romney was its governor, and on which the ACA was based, has just released :

    – – – -SKIP – —

    – –THIS – – – – ->That’s millions of people who are more likely to die because of Republican and Conservative policies regarding health care. Our family can barely afford $26,000 in medical expenses now. How much will our medical expenses increase if the Affordable Care Act is voided by the Conservatives on the Supreme Court or repealed by the Republicans in the future? Perhaps more importantly, how long can I expect to live if the ACA is not in place?

Clearly the Republicans and conservatives don’t value my “freedom to life” very highly, or yours for that matter. Just as they don’t value our freedom of speech, to privacy, to a trial by jury, etc. Indeed, outside of their concern for embryos, viable or not, in the womb, I can’t find one instance in which the Republican party or Conservatives promote policies that “favor life” in the slightest. Perhaps someone ought to call them what they really are:

    The Pro-Death Party.

There R many similar cases. – – -Sooo VERY SAD.

    – — – –Tulsa Shooting Victim Had Turned Her Life Around – — –

    – — – – –In Tulsa, Okla., the families of the three victims killed during a shooting rampage Friday are planning funerals. Police say William Allen, 31, Bobby Clark, 54, and Donna Fields, 49, were shot in a predominantly black neighborhood on the north side of Tulsa by two white men.

Fields was walking home after playing a game of dominoes with friends. She was called Donna, but her given name was Dannaer. Her brother Kenneth says she was named after an aunt.

For the past year, she had been living with Kenneth, his wife, Emma, and her 9-year-old niece, Mariah, in a modest ranch home — not far from where her body was found.

“She was just on the next street over,” her brother says. “I didn’t hear any gunshots or nothing. Shoot, she was almost here to the house, and she just didn’t make it.”

Fields was a petite woman, and she loved to walk. The two men who have confessed to shooting Fields, Jake England, 19, and Alvin Watts, 33, drove around the north side of Tulsa randomly picking victims.

Fields says whenever his sister walked home, her route was the same.

“I tried to show her another way, but she said, ‘I ain’t’ coming that way.’ So she came the way she always come, and that’s the way she was coming that night,” he says.

Donna Fields came from a large family. She had nine brothers and sisters, but after her death, only three of her siblings are living. She’s also survived by her 30-year-old son.

    – – – –William Allen remembered as happy, caring

    – – —William Allen was killed a week before his 32nd birthday.

The father of a 14-year-old daughter, Allen was known to his mother as T-bone.

When he moved to Tulsa four years ago from Hattiesburg, Miss., his new friends in Oklahoma named him Sip.

“He was a happy person,” his mother, Desera Allen, said. “He made the best out of every situation.”

As a child, he loved to take pictures, which Desera Allen said she’s left to memorize now that he’s gone.

He walked frequently to alleviate almost constant pain caused by a car wreck.

He’d already escaped death once, his wife, Jeanette Allen, said of the wreck.

One of four siblings, he enjoyed time with family and encouraged his mom to go back to school. William Allen had dreams of studying business administration, his mother said.

Jeanette Allen described her husband of three years as “sweet, caring, (her) lover.”

William Allen was walking home from his brother’s house when he was gunned down. He was likely shot between 1 and 2 a.m., police said.

He was found dead about 8:30 a.m. April 6 on the lawn of Jack’s Memory Chapel, 801 E. 36th Street North.

“He didn’t deserve that,” his wife said of his slaying.

    – – – –Cain campaign paid groups reportedly under federal investigation – — –

    – — –Nearly two months after dropping his bid for the GOP nomination, Herman Cain’s presidential campaign paid about $19,000 to a pair of non-profit groups that are reportedly under federal investigation for boosting his White House bid.

The Wisconsin-based groups, Prosperity USA and Wisconsin Prosperity Network, were run by Cain’s top aides and footed the bill for about $40,000 worth of goods and services — –including iPads and chartered flights — – that helped Cain’s campaign get going early last year, according to documents obtained by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

It would be illegal for the groups to donate goods or services to a presidential campaign, and Cain’s campaign last year said it had retained an outside lawyer to look into the matter.

The Journal Sentinel reported last month that the FBI was investigating the groups and their leaders, Mark Block and Linda Hansen, who served as Cain’s campaign manager and deputy campaign manager, respectively.

A report filed Friday night with the Federal Election Commission shows that Cain’s presidential campaign committee on Jan.uary 20 paid $14,779 to Prosperity USA for lodging, transportation and meals and $4,064 to Wisconsin Prosperity Network for office equipment and furniture.
