Scripps Howard writes a puff piece on the KKK. No, really!

    By Kathleen Geier

Is this an early April Fool’s prank, or has everyone at the Scripps Howard News Service been hit with the stupid stick — hard?

I read the piece with ever-increasing slack-jawed amazement, my eyebrows raised so high they nearly met my hairline. Clearly an attempt to portray the kinder, gentler side of the Klan, it is an epic journalistic fail. Here’s the first line: “There’s a lot to be angry about if you’re in the KKK.” Well, that’s one way of putting it! It goes on from there:

As local leader of the Loyal White Knights, Edward the Exalted Cyclops organized a barbecue last month to make plans for Saturday’s demonstration to show that white people still have rights.

Edward curses sparingly, drinks rarely, and keeps his hair clipped short — his tribute to his old-fashioned Christian values

Does that read like a pitch-perfect Onion parody, or what? I mean, Edward the Exalted Cyclops? Hosting a barbecue?? And yes, you might, I suppose, describe decades of brutal racist terror and violence as “old-fashioned Christian values”— but only if you are a very mischievous atheist or anti-clerical-ist indeed.

    • gn

Organization responsible for countless acts of terrorism against African Americans is demonstrating for their “rights”…terrorists are the new black along with everyone else I guess lol. Thank you to Kathleen Geier for calling this foolishness out.

Texas DA slain in his home; had armed himself

KAUFMAN, Texas (AP) — Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland took no chances after one of his assistant prosecutors was assassinated two months ago. McLelland said he carried a gun everywhere he went and took extra care when answering the door at his home.

“I’m ahead of everybody else because, basically, I’m a soldier,” the
23-year Army veteran boasted in an interview less than two weeks ago.

On Saturday, he and his wife were found dead in their home just
outside the town of Forney, about 20 miles from Dallas, killed in an
attack for which authorities have given no motive.

“Everybody’s a little on edge and a little shocked,” Forney Mayor Darren Rozell said. “It appears this was not a random act.”

        Terrorists of the Right Color

        By mistermix March 31st, 2013

Can you imagine the panic if a prosecutor, then the District Attorney and his wife in one state, and in the meantime the head of prisons in another state, were killed by Muslim supremacists? The simultaneous pants-shitting of every state legislator south of the Mason-Dixon line would be loud and prolonged, especially if one of the suspects killed a pizza delivery driver and then died in a shootout after which bomb-making materials were found in his car. Fox would be 24/7 with conspiracy theories and panic, dozens of “enhanced” Patriot Act cavity search laws would be proposed In Congress, and Bieber knows what would be happening to Muslims in states where their mere presence already instills panic in the locals.

Luckily, the suspects in these crimes are members of the Aryan Brotherhood, not the Muslim Brotherhood, so we can just let the police do their job and hunt them down without being forced to board airplanes wrapped only in a Snuggy.

I need help. I got sick from a germy 1 year old (kid germs are brutal for me) and have had laryngitis since Tuesday and a cough with raspy voice that reportedly sounds like death.

What has worked for you to get rid of laryngitis and horrible cough? I have the cough syrup but it’s not working. I’ve tried hot toddy my mom used to force down my throat when I was a kid. I’m so over being sick. Also talking is a significant part of my job.

    • Alma98

Apparently honey and cinnamon is suppose to help. Here’s a link for you. http://www.findhomeremedy.com/home-remedies-for-laryngitis/

      • Lisa M

        I’ll check it out!! Thanks!

    • sagittarius

Honey and lemon. Have it with hot tea, to loosen the vocal cords.

      • Lisa M

Gonna give it at try!! Thanks!

    • isonprize

You are so right. Little kids are cute germ carrying critters. (And some of them aren’t so cute…) I’m a fan of whatever store brand is the cheapest of guaifenesin. No added ingredients, just the basic single-ingredient formulations of guaifenesin.

For me, it breaks up that cough and gets it out of you. Now I’m not saying it’s pretty, because it’s gotta come out, so you may have cough more to spit out the gunk, but like I said, it works for me. Reminds me of what my daddy used to say for most bodily functions: “More room out than there is in…” LOLOL Anyway, I hope you feel better.

    • rikyrah

your comment reminds me of one of my favorite Simpsons episodes…

Hi Everyone and I just want to say 1)Happy Holidays and 2)Disqus sucks

  • Aquagranny911

    Hola POU family,

I know it is Easter but I am so upset. My cousin told me that people were dissing Cesar Chavez on google. This is his DAY too, his birthday for us to remember a good man who died too soon. Easter comes on many different days but Cesar has only this one. Why are people so mean & evil?

Cesar was a good man. I knew him. He is one of my most precious heroes. He gave everything to helping the migrant farm workers who were and still are so abused & exploited. He cared about the people & his work will go on. Our President honored him.

I am alternating between sad & angry. I know those feelings are nothing new for so many who post here nor are they new for me, as well. But I am wishing that google had not done this. Perhaps this was a marketing thing for them rather than a wish to really honor Cesar Chavez & that makes me really angry!

Sorry, POU fam for bringing this on Easter Sunday but I am feeling like a little kiddo who needs some comfort today. Can we ever be allowed to honor our special heroes in peace?

    • CamilleCamille

Don’t be sad or angry AG- It’s just a noisy, ignorant few determined to rope everyone else into the ugly, miserable place they inhabit.
How’ve you been otherwise sweetheart and how’s your miracle daughter doing?
      Happy Easter!

    • TresL

Don’t worry AG. Many of those ignorant right wingers don’t know who Cesar Chavez is. They think it’s Hugo Chavez being recognized.

    • isonprize

AG, don’t even give them space in your head. What a bunch of ignoramuses. They are small and petty. They don’t even get the irony of being meanand hateful on Easter Sunday. If there ever is a day of the redemption, this should be it, yes? I think Google had the best of intentions, I really do.

Think good thoughts. How proud I am to “know” you, a person who personally knew Cesar Chavez. From what I have read, he was a fierce advocate, and had a heart of gold. I suspect that you, AG, are also a fierce advocate, and from all the stories that you’ve told, you ALSO have a heart of gold.

No worries. We know the truth and the Truth IS the Light. And it’s good people like you who will never let the world forget about people like Cesar Chavez!!

      {{{{{{{Hugs for AG}}}}}}}

      • gn

Seriously, we’re all blog buddies with Cesar Chavez via AG’s one degree of separation. How cool is that! The far right is crazy, doesn’t take much to rile them up, and I doubt that google anticipated that there would be sanctimonious bible-thumpers obsessed with google doodle today rather than attending to church and family on one of the most significant Christian holidays. They just want attention. I’m glad that Chavez was honored too.

    • Worldwatcher7

Well, I’ve never had to fight Discus so hard to make a post before. I hope the third time is the charm.

As a life-long Californian, I was proud to see one of our state’s great heroes honored today. And whether the ignorant right-wingers know it or not, Cesar Chavez risked his life for the well-being of his fellow human beings, which is perfectly in keeping with the message of Easter. Have a joyful and peaceful evening, AG.

    • sagittarius

      Hi, AG!

Still sending prayers up for you and your daughter. Don’t let those goatfiggers get you down… Cesar Chavez was a hero to many people – me included.

    • gn

The far right fringe is one of the more attention-seeking groups in the country right now, and this incident is an example of why they are so freaking annoying. I’m sorry that they swathed the tribute to Chavez in their special brand of stupidity and ignorance, but I’m in awe that you knew him personally! I love Easter, and I’m glad that such a wonderful person was honored today. I share your anger about many things, and I’m glad that you spoke your peace here. In google’s defense, no one can anticipate what’s going to set the nutties off…oh well, happy holidays to all and keep on keeping on, AG.

    • nathkatun7

Aquagranny, Some of these idiots thought Cesar Chavez was Hugo Chavez! But I totally share you disgust of people who dishonored this noble man who did so much good for the much exploited and abused farm workers — people who the bible– in Matthew’s gospel– fit the category of “the least of these.”

We Found Our Son in the Subway

The story of how Danny and I were married last July in a Manhattan courtroom, with our son, Kevin, beside us, began 12 years earlier, in a dark, damp subway station.

Danny called me that day, frantic. “I found a baby!” he shouted. “I called 911, but I don’t think they believed me. No one’s coming. I don’t want to leave the baby alone. Get down here and flag down a police car or something.” By nature Danny is a remarkably calm person, so when I felt his heart pounding through the phone line, I knew I had to run.

When I got to the A/C/E subway exit on Eighth Avenue, Danny was still there, waiting for help to arrive. The baby, who had been left on the ground in a corner behind the turnstiles, was light-brown skinned and quiet, probably about a day old, wrapped in an oversize black sweatshirt.

In the following weeks, after family court had taken custody of “Baby ACE,” as he was nicknamed, Danny told the story over and over again, first to every local TV news station, then to family members, friends, co-workers and acquaintances. The story spread like an urban myth: You’re never going to believe what my friend’s cousin’s co-worker found in the subway. What neither of us knew, or could have predicted, was that Danny had not just saved an abandoned infant; he had found our son.

Three months later, Danny appeared in family court to give an account of finding the baby. Suddenly, the judge asked, “Would you be interested in adopting this baby?” The question stunned everyone in the courtroom, everyone except for Danny, who answered, simply, “Yes.”

“But I know it’s not that easy,” he said.

  • Happy Easter POU Fam! 🙂

  • Miranda

I was watching this with my family after we’d eaten our Easter dinner and all of us were shaken up. This was a brutal injury and I am STILL shaken at the thought of it. I wanted to cry for him…I hope it wasn’t career threatening.

Louisville’s Kevin Ware suffers gruesome leg injury, players emotional

In a terrifying scene, Cardinals guard Russ Smith started crying
uncontrollably after seeing Ware while freshman forward Montrezl Harrell was doubled over on the floor, shaking.

Players on Duke’s bench also appeared to be shocked about what had just happened.

The game stopped for seven minutes, and Louisville’s players gathered around Ware before he was taken out of the arena on a stretcher.

Ware was taken promptly to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

A spokesman for the Cardinals said doctors “got his pain under control
now and he’s resting comfortably,” being prepped for a likely surgery.
As the game started back up, Pitino dropped to one knee on the sideline and wiped tears away.

The coach said during a halftime interview on CBS that Ware told the team as he was lying on the court: “Don’t worry about me. I’ll be OK. You guys go win this thing.”

    • sagittarius

It was being discussed on Twitter… I refuse to look at TV or YouTube or anything that may contain a replay of it. It sounds more gruesome than the broken leg suffered by Sam Bowie in a televised NBA game- and that was bad.

      • trose1

Hello Sag I saw a close up pic on twitter, DO NOT LOOK, I have never seen anything like that in my life. How those young men played after seeing hearing that incident is amazing. If the pic I saw was an accurate depiction of the broken leg I am not sure why the game continued.
I know millions of dollars are at stake but that was unreal. I question the continuation of the game.

    • rikyrah

I won’t watch it either. I still remember watching the MNF game where Theismann went down.

      • MsKitty

Same here. To this day I can’t even think about Theismann getting hurt without tensing up. That was awful.
