Sunday Open Thread: Happy Fathers Day

Happy Father’s Day to all of the  Fathers of POU!!

blackfatherandbaby

Father’s Day  is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June, though it is also celebrated widely on other days by many other countries. Father’s Day was created to complement Mother’s Day, a celebration that honors mothers and motherhood.

Father’s Day was founded in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas. Its first celebration was in the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910.  Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there.  After hearing a sermon about Jarvis’ Mother’s Day in 1909, she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honoring them.  Although she initially suggested June 5, her father’s birthday, the pastors did not have enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June.

It did not have much success initially. In the 1920’s, Dodd stopped promoting the celebration because she was studying in the Art Institute of Chicago, and it faded into relative obscurity, even in Spokane.  In the 1930’s Dodd returned to Spokane and started promoting the celebration again, raising awareness at a national level.  She had the help of those trade groups that would benefit most from the holiday, for example the manufacturers of ties, tobacco pipes, and any traditional present to fathers.  Since 1938 she had the help of the Father’s Day Council, founded by the New York Associated Men’s Wear Retailers to consolidate and systematize the commercial promotion.  Americans resisted the holiday during a few decades, perceiving it as just an attempt by merchants to replicate the commercial success of Mother’s Day, and newspapers frequently featured cynical and sarcastic attacks and jokes. But the trade groups did not give up: they kept promoting it and even incorporated the jokes into their adverts, and they eventually succeeded. By the mid-1980’s the Father’s Council wrote that “(…) [Father's Day] has become a Second Christmas for all the men’s gift-oriented industries.”

A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913.  In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Father’s Day celebration  and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized.  US President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day be observed by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation.  Two earlier attempts to formally recognize the holiday had been defeated by Congress.  In 1957, Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus “[singling] out just one of our two parents”.  In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.  Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law  in 1972.

Sit back and enjoy some Father’s Day songs.

As someone with a great dad who passed on early, and a mother who I have come to believe is literally the best in the world…no one can replace a dad or take on the role of dad. Kids can grow up and even flourish without you guys, but you can never be replaced. Happy Father’s Day and thank you to you and all of the POU dads for being such a wonderful presence in your kids’ lives! They appreciate it more than you know.

Why is Brian Schweitzer still here? Why haven’t Dems shunned him out the room yet?

    Philip Rucker ‏@PhilipRucker 12h
Hillary’s would-be lefty challenger came to Romney summit, said he’s anti-ACA, dissed Obama & complimented Rand. Wha? http://wapo.st/1nETTwG
    ——————————-
During a question-and-answer session, Republican strategist Ana Navarro asked Schweitzer whether he was more relatable to average voters than Clinton is. The rancher-politician said he is, but quickly segued to a diagnosis of Romney and Obama’s likability in the 2012 election.

“I don’t know why you lost the election, Mitt, but I know this: I was watching you on TV and I didn’t see the Mitt Romney that I knew,” Schweitzer said. “You are a fun guy and you’re easy-going and Obama is not. I’ve been in the room with him a little, too. He’s stiff as a board and you’ve got it going on.”http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/a-democratic-2016-hopeful-campaigns-in-an-unlikely-place-romneys-donor-summit/2014/06/14/64b07230-f3ec-11e3-914c-1fbd0614e2d4_story.html

Yet some “Progressives” were buying what he was selling. This guy is another Ralph Nader trying to screw the democratic party. Maybe he is bitter because President Obama and other democrats didn’t hook him up with a position after his term as governor ended. Also what is up with this constant Obama is stiff as a board nonsense. Is it because the man doesn’t act crazy when something bad happens ? Is it because of his Hawaiian “cool” personality ?

I’ve heard countless interviews by celebrities and others who have hung out with the president, and they say he is a really likable guy. Maybe President Obama wasn’t feeling his vibe because he could tell he was a phony.

      • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

Some white people think Black people, especially Black men, should act like a clown and entertain them.

        • TresL

Yes, I maintain they think we exist only for their entertainment.

        • jds09

And/or serve them…reflected in Bubba’s comments about PBO bringing them coffee.

      • gn

Emos fall for every hustler. This is a pure unadulterated character attack which has absolutely nothing to do with the issues. President Obama is easily the most skilled politician I’ve ever seen with the exception of his wife. Emos and their heroes of the week are not slick: this is all about continuing to denigrate the President so that uppity negros fall back. This backlash has been going on from all sides of the political spectrum for 6+ years.

      • qosine

“Maybe President Obama wasn’t feeling his vibe because he could tell he was a phony.”

        • TresL

ITA and that’s if it’s even true he felt that way. If you’re a Dem in a room full of Repubs, you’ve got to take a gratuitous swipe at PBO. That’s par for the course.

          • jds09

It also makes me suspicious of the conventional wisdom that says that the independents control elections. That’s what I think Schweitzer was doing. Auditioning to be the “democratic” candidate that could get independents (republicans in hiding) and do the bidding of the elites (HRC’s role.) But I may be paranoid this morning.

          • TresL

Maybe he’s jockeying for a Romney/Schweitzer “unity” ticket.

      • jds09

As I drive around town I’m listening the book Renegade on tape. It’s written by a reporter. Wolffe goes thru this long passage about PBO’s “aloofness” and how he act around people (meaning the press). My immediate thought was, that’s how my parents taught me how to behave in white circles, for safety reasons.

        • TresL

Bingo! It’s also the way you behave around people you don’t trust that you know are looking to take you down. Some people are expert at fakin’ and shakin’ no matter the circumstances while others tend to be more honest with their displays of warmth and affection.

        • AxelFoley

I seem to recall that shortly after his speech at the DNC when it was clear their lives had changed forever, he and Michelle made the decision then. “No new friends!” If this is true, it makes perfect sense considering the snake pit that is politics and D.C

      • Kennymack1971

The people who say that the President is “stiff” “aloof” and “doesn’t seem like he likes being President” are telegraphing their saltiness because the President and First Lady don’t fool with THEM. Go look at the pics of the President and First Lady at the pow wow or for that matter any instance where the President interacts with the people. Brian Schweitzer is a clown….EmoProgs…you sure know how to pick em.

      Miranda, your question and this!

Schweitzer, never one to shy away from the spotlight, has been auditioning lately for a long-shot presidential bid. Over the past month, he has sat for lengthy interviews with the Wall Street Journal and Time magazine and has been one of the few Democrats publicly criticizing Clinton, leading to speculation that he might try to mobilize the party’s progressive base against her.

It’s Sunday so I must mind my language. But, how, just how is this a progressive candidate if he has to spend time with the above publications and Rand Paul and a Republican confab????? This is related to the discussion above about the field force of white privilege where a lot of people reside. Not even a room full of poc could make sense out of this guy.

      • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

“he might try to mobilize the party’s progressive base against her.”

Number one he better make sure she’s running first. Number two he’s blowing smoke. If Schweitzer is all that serious than run. He’s not.

    • AxelFoley

Posted this in last night’s thread. Broke my promise not to curse because of this fool. Emos will eat this up, though.

      • Miranda

        He’s curse-worthy!

    • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

It stinks but voting wise Schweitzer votes with his party somewhere between 80 and 90 percent of the time. I know it’s wishful thinking on my part but if Schweitzer can convince Romney to run again then the Democrats should award him the Medal of Honor. It would guarantee us the White House.

“You are a fun guy and you’re easy-going and Obama is not. ”

      Not even Romney believes that.

    • GOVCHRIS1988

The one thing about Barack Obama is that he has this ability to “read” people very well. What I mean is that he can look at you and tell if you are real or not. I’m thinking that Barack Obama once met Brian Schweitzer, and did not pick up a good vibe from him, thus the “cold, aloof” charge. He was just cold and aloof to YOU. And judging by this article, we see why.

    Insurers flocking to ObamaCare
By Elise Viebeck – 06/15/14 06:00 AM EDT

Health insurance companies suddenly want in on the ObamaCare action.

With a difficult launch year out of the way, insurers are seeing a moneymaking opportunity in the federal healthcare program and are lining up to offer plans on the ObamaCare exchanges in 2015.

In the 10 states where data is available, at least 27 new insurers have indicated they will offer plans on the marketplaces in 2015. Each additional carrier will expand the number of plans sold on the exchanges, since none of the carriers already offering plans have indicated they will drop out.

The surge in participation is being touted by the White House, and indicates that many of the ObamaCare exchanges are taking root despite the broader unpopularity of the law and opposition from Republicans on Capitol Hill.

    Read more: http://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/209358-health-insurers-new-message-on-obamacare-count-us-in#ixzz34iDbM4Wz

    • jds09

The “despite the broader unpopularity of the law”….really? They just can’t help themselves.

      • Miranda

They’re gonna parrot its “unpopular” no matter HOW many people sign up and how many people are covered now because of it…they are gonna say its unpopular until they can figure out a way to make it the idea of somebody other than President Obama.

        • TresL

Also, the most desperate critique of all was that voters would punish Dems for a glitchy roll-out even after it was quickly repaired. That makes no sense at all.

          • Miranda

It doesn’t have to make sense…they just figure if they say it enough, it’ll HAVE to make sense.

      • Kennymack1971

They’ve got nothing else re: Obamacare. All the other talking points have gone up in smoke so like a bunch grade schoolers all they can do is whine that the law is unpopular….while 8 million people signed up and more insurers join the exchanges.

        • jds09

Plus, those stats have been de-bunked repeatedly. The “unpopular” numbers include folks that think the law doesn’t go far enough and those who like ALL the major pieces of ACA but don’t like the law, cause you know reasons….

          • TresL

Exactly, and let’s not forget as was expertly revealed a while back on the Jimmy Kimmel show, what most people who say they don’t like Obamacare really don’t like is the Obama part. In there ignorance, the same people preferred the ACA.

Ex-felon tries to help young fathers find success
    BY MAUDLYNE IHEJIRIKA Staff Reporter
    Updated: June 15, 2014 2:27AM

When Sheldon Smith, 25, talks to or about his 5-year-old daughter Jada, he becomes a different person.

He’s stern: “OK, sit up straight now,” says Smith, founder of The Dovetail Project, his voice immediately garnering a flagpole stance from the child slouching on his lap.

Or Smith is just mush: “You OK? We’re almost done, Boo-Boo,” he says when she fidgets.

Smith, of Avalon Park, runs a program that’s been turning boys into men, then fathers, since March 2010.

“First, we teach manhood,” says Smith, chatting at the East 47th Street offices of his fatherhood initiative program, which last week graduated 12 men between ages 17 and 24, considered at-risk or high-risk and hailing from communities including Avalon Park, Englewood and Roseland.more here: http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/28035114-418/ex-felon-tries-to-help-young-fathers-find-success.html#.U52bbpRdWTK

  • jds09

If this is true, then white America is in a existential crisis. Hey white folks with some sense, between the “elite” and the “tea partiers” your brand is getting killed. Better handle your situation.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/at-elite-donor-summit-featuring-2016-gop-hopefuls-a-longing-for-romney-to-run-again/2014/06/13/0d27d8f0-f27a-11e3-9ebc-2ee6f81ed217_story.html

    • gn

Ha. I think that would usher in GOP civil war during their primaries. The establishment argument for Romney is kinda null and void: he couldn’t win as a “moderate” so the far right figures that they might as get a loony on the ticket.

      • jds09

What these folks live in cannot be called a bubble. It’s seemingly indestructible. It’s like a force field that repels data and facts: two ass kickings on the national stage, the death of the southern strategy, success of ACA, a war weary country, an improving economy, etc.

They’re trying to resurrect Romney….wow, just wow.

        • gn

Totally agreed except that I don’t think the southern strategy is dead at all. Racism is not only alive and well, it’s flourishing. I honestly believe that not only the far right but portions of the left are racist as hell and invested in destroying civil rights as a vehicle for black liberation. But that the GOP is in turmoil with no good options is spot on! IMO the biggest data point that they’re in denial about is PBO’s success in erasing their traditional lead on national security issues; the neoconservative argument is decimated.

          • jds09

It’s dead in the sense that the road to the presidency has been proven twice, that it doesn’t have to go thru the south.

          • gn

            Aha, very true!

          • rikyrah

Barack Obama put a stake through the heart of the Southern Strategy. Barack Obama won the Presidency TWICE without needing one Southern State to get to 270

        • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

It’s mindboggling. This is why they’re on the verge of oblivion when it comes to national elections. No self reflection, no changing course, no admittance of doing anything wrong. Just double down and eventually we’ll all see things their way.

In the real world the minute someone said draft Romney people should have run screaming out of the room.

      • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

He’s going to say the exact same things he did in 2012. Romney called himself a severe conservative and got crushed by 5 million votes.

Scarborough is doing Democrats a favor when he says draft Romney and he’s also tipping the Republicans hand. They’re basically admitting they don’t have anyone else.

        • TresL

It’s amazing that Scarborough can continue to openly participate in Repub politics while Ed and Keith were admonished for doing so.

          • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

What cracks me up is how outraged people get when they watch his show. Scarborough said something bad about the President. Surprise, surprise. What do they expect from a Republican actively participating in Republican get-togethers?

The good part is this. If Scarborough is raging against PBO then that means PBO is doing things exactly right.

          • TresL

I guess he finaly gave up on Chris Christie. I never watch his show but I’m aware he tried his damdest to minimize the impact of the allegations against Christie. This proves he’s moved on.

    • jziglar

Lol ! The republican party is bankrupt. They have no leaders. Also for the liberals who say ” the republicans don’t care about the presidency, they want to control local governments and the house” they want to control those things but the presidency and the senate are vital. If the democrats control the WH and senate after 2016 then they can push the courts even further in their direction. Some conservatives admitted that they’re concerned.

So true. May he rest in peace. Several times I saw interviews with Mr Kasem and his wife, she always struck me as very intelligent, and they seemed genuinely in love, although they did make a strange couple. I’m surprised to hear all this, but then again money is involved so….

Loving this pic! It cracks me up how Michelle’s brother is gripping her wrist. I don’t know why little kiddos to that. My Granddaughter used to do that to her little sister all the time until little sister had enough & would shake her off.

Our twins still do that, especially Twin One who will grab his brother’s wrist in situations where Twin Two is feeling overwhelmed. Twin Two will do that to his brother also but not as much.

I have always wondered if that is some way to ‘anchor’ the younger in case they want to fly off. I’ve seen this so many times in small children. I have always wished I could ask why they do it.

    So sweet!

AJC: Atlanta Falcons running back Steven Jackson wrote a blog dedicated to his father. Among the topics Jackson touched on:

–Lessons he’s learned from his father and how he’s applied those lessons to being a father himself.

–The challenges of being a traveling pro athlete while trying to raise two young boys.

–Why he doesn’t want his sons to feel pressured to play football or any other sports, but encourages them to do so if they want.

–Why communication is important between a father and his sons.

The Iraq debacle, for thinking people, should put the brakes on the recent Bush rehabilitation efforts: Jenna’s cutesy interviews with PBO, FLOTUS and her dad, his painting hobby, Jeb’s speeches on immigration and possible WH run and Poppy Bush’s annual plane jumps while wearing funny socks. The tragedy of Iraq is a brutal and timely reminder of what happens when you trust Repubs with power.

    • jds09

Maybe all these efforts are not for Jeb to run, its just for the ability to go outside. Even just watching Jenna’s cutesy interview with PBO, I wanted to slap that Bush-look off her face. Remember that look? The one when he stared into the camera blankly (or trying to look tough) and told us some bullshit?

I know they (the Bushes) have their supporters within their bubble, but I can easliy imagine folks like me yelling “Fuck You!” in the produce section or while pumping gas.

      • TresL

ITA! I’ve not watched any of her interviews or anything about or from any Bush. I’m only aware through reading this and other blogs. That name can never be redeemed, in my view, and not just because of Iraq.

      • Aquagranny911

Co-sign. If I saw a Bush in the produce section of my groceria, it could culminate in the food fight of this century! Way more than “a drive by fruiting.”

    • AxelFoley

Glad I’m not the only one who sees this crap as them trying to rehabilitate Bush’s image.

      T’ain’t gonna work, tho.

I told my nephews (who came to me because they know their parents not even gonna entertain being asked) – no way Tee Tee will ever pay $250 for a pair of sneakers unless Idris Elba himself is delivering them.

Oh and I can just bet this will be spun by the right wing media that its black folks spending welfare checks on sneakers – just watch, but this is the pic form CBS:

Detroiters Wait In Line for a Week for New Air Jordans

Fans endured rain, heat and humidity for a chance to plop down $250 for a pair of the commemorative sneakers on Saturday.

Detroit may be bankrupt and jobs may be scarce, but some diehard Air Jordan fans waited on line for about a week for a chance to spend $250 on a new pair of the commemorative sneakers on Saturday, CBS Detroit reports.

Young men began camping outside sneaker emporium Burn Rubber in downtown Royal Oak, Mich., on Monday, the site reports.

Their goal was to scoop up a pair of Air Jordan 6 Retros that honor Michael Jordan, the former Chicago Bulls player, entrepreneur and principal owner and chairman of the Charlotte Hornets. The shoes boast a special graphic on the back heel to commemorate the six biggest victories of Jordan’s storied career, according to Nike.com.

“He’s legendary, these will be legendary,” Jason Thurmand, 28, of Detroit, told CBS.

      • rikyrah

        Alma,

they’re still trying to get into it over Hillary over at BJ.

Those of us telling them that they shouldn’t want any parts of recounting the 2008 race are being told ‘ we just imagined’ it.

that Hillary’s campaign wasn’t as bad as it seemed.

that it really wasn’t mathematically over for her ass in Wisconsin, and that it was ok that she stayed in.

I’m just not having it today.

I bring up the entire Wiki full of racial insults towards Candidate Obama..

and they bring up that one fucking ‘ You’re likeable enough, Hillary.’ as if that one statement balances out an entire fucking Wiki full of racial insults.

          • Aquagranny911

            SMDH!

          • TresL

I watched that live when it happened and it was hilarious. I think for HRC supporters it was the combination of not only what was said but how it was said that still bothers them to this day. I, on the other hand, loved it then and now.

          • Admiral_Komack

It’s understandable in the context of being stated by someone who is seen as “uppity” about someone who WILL be President.

            Why, it’s inevitable!

        • Aquagranny911

I skimmed it. Dang, Riky some of those people are as obtuse & racist as the RWNJs. The denial that Clintons had a crap campaign & used racist dog whistles against PBO is epic!

        • Admiral_Komack

You know, you forced me to go over there.
I want my two minutes back :b

          • Aquagranny911

Just think of it as: You’re driving down the highway, you see an accident ahead, you don’t want to look but then you do. You keep on driving.
