Sunday Open Thread: P.O.U. Sunday Jazz Brunch

As you enjoy your Sunday breakfast/brunch, check out the sounds of Herbie Hancock….

Herbert Jeffrey “Herbie” Hancock (born April 12, 1940) is an American pianist, keyboardist, bandleader and composer.[1] As part of Miles Davis‘s Second Great Quintet, Hancock helped to redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section and was one of the primary architects of the “post-bop” sound. He was one of the first jazz musicians to embrace music synthesizers and funk music (characterized by syncopated drum beats). Hancock’s music is often melodic and accessible; he has had many songs “cross over” and achieved success among pop audiences. His music embraces elements of funk and soul while adopting freer stylistic elements from jazz. In his jazz improvisation, he possesses a unique creative blend of jazz, blues, and modern classical music, with harmonic stylings much like the styles of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.

Hancock’s best-known solo works include “Cantaloupe Island”, “Watermelon Man” (later performed by dozens of musicians, including bandleader Mongo Santamaría), “Maiden Voyage”, “Chameleon”, and the singles “I Thought It Was You” and “Rockit”. His 2007 tribute album River: The Joni Letters won the 2008 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, only the second jazz album ever to win the award after Getz/Gilberto in 1965.

Hancock is a member of Sōka Gakkai International.[2][3]

On July 22, 2011 at a ceremony in Paris, Hancock was named UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for the promotion of Intercultural Dialogue.

    Good Morning POU!

Best job ever? Responding to the nutty petitions on the White House website! ROFLMAO

    • Translation: “Get Yo’ Life!”

    • jds09

LOL. The tone of the White House response is pitch perfect.

“So the short answer is that we won’t be calling for the President’s impeachment — and given the fact that you made your appeal to the White House itself, we doubt you were holding your breath waiting for our support.”

It responds to their points, mocks their bullshit and applauds their participation. Classic/

I was thinking (yes!) that these petitions and the great replies make good fact sheets for daily push back just in talking to people in everyday life. These buzz phrases get pushed by tank-media-book/mag sellers, and the WH responses are so clear and common sense, clearing away the lies.

    • Worldwatcher7

This is so typical of PBO’s communication style: state the truth clearly, respectfully, and intelligently.

There’s a petition there to pardon Marissa Alexander, the domestic violence victim in Florida who was jailed for “standing her ground.”

    Black don’t crack.

    • OK! Mr. Hancock is on his Cat Daddy Vibe!

  • goldenstar

Roland Martin is another program host who falls for the insertion of himself as part of any panel discussion. It’s not a good look. At least he interviewed Jeffrey Wright today and it was great. Wright has a fabulous mind and provided interesting commentary on the politics of some of his roles.

  • itgurl_29

Maureen Dowd is acting a fool in today’s column. I didn’t read it, but according to twitter, she’s trashing Dr. Susan Rice and accusing POTUS of having women problems.

I seriously think that awesome rant against her and her ilk that was posted a couple of days ago needs to be posted in the comments over there. And then we all need to “thumbs up” the hell out of it.

  • This is for everyone, but especially for the Twitter Warriors because this criticism comes up a lot on twitter.

When someone says, “I want President Obama to add more women/people of color/diversity to his cabinet/administration”, simply respond with this:

Can you name someone/people you would like to see President Obama add/nominate to cabinet/administration?

I’ve asked this question to several of PBO’s critics and I’ve gotten either complete silence, some generic “I wanna see X number of women/POC” answer, or attempts to deflect the conversation to some bs about “But women voted/canvassed for him!”. If these people were REALLY serious about adding more “diversity” to PBO’s administration (which is already diverse) they would have a list of names of people they’d like to see nominated ret ta go. But instead, they either can’t name anyone or they latch on to Michelle Flournoy, who I just learned today per Zizi2, is a war hawk and a defense promoter which goes against everything EmoProgs claim to believe in.

    • jds09

Amen. I’d like to ask them, “how diverse is your workplace?” “Are you a diversity warrior at your job?” “Have you made the same demand to your boss as you are making to the President?” If not, then shut the fuck up.

      Okay. I’m done.

      • Ebogan63

Using this next time I see some idiot bring up this bullshit.

      • GC

I was done the first time it made headlines. Their manufactured outrage seems to originate from Charlie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

    • malletgirl02

I didn’t read your entire post before I made mine. I just realized you said just what I was going to say.

    • rikyrah

this is similar to the ‘ pardon’ complaint…

Ask those whiners to name 25 people that should be pardoned…

      they go blank.

      • nellcote

I don’t complain about it because I don’t understand the thought process to grant/not grant pardons. But I would suggest Leonard Peltier.

        • TyrenM

          Free Mumia.

      • conlakappa

Duh, Manning and Assange. They are like white Mumias or something. That the adjudication process hasn’t played is neither here nor there, of course. They don’t know even 5 names, I would bet.

    Hola POU!

It’s freezing here! 25 degrees on my patio at 6 this morning. I know that may be balmy winter weather for some of you but we are not use to this. I’m off to pick citrus for the food bank. We are supposed to have this cold weather all week & there are concerns that the fruit will freeze before we can get it all. We were not scheduled to do this until next week end so we have been trying to round up our volunteers today.

    Later Peeps, enjoy your Sunday!

    • crazycanuck

AG, the weather here has been springlike. It’s bizarre.

    • ch555x

Yeah, the weather has been funky around the country. We got to the 70s in eastern TN…o_@

      • *throws snowball at you*

      • qosine

Yeah, in Mid TN, we just finished a Tornado Warning. Just rain now, but temp dropping.

        • conlakappa

D.C. has been foggy and misty and 50something today. It was forecast to be 70 here.

    • TyrenM

I wish it was 25. Below zero windchill this weekend. Winter in full effect. But I know that’s cold for Phoenix.

  • vulcan_girl

Is anyone attending the Inauguration? I’m getting on the bus with a friend from work!

    • Alma98

I wish I was, take plenty of pics and have fun.

  • Alma98

    Good afternoon POU!

OT: Does anyone here have a family member with Parkinson’s?

  • Alma98

I don’t know how we missed this from November. H/T desertflower on TOD.

    • jds09

Okay, I’ll admit it, my favorite part of Django Unchained is when Miss Anne got shot.

Dowd has been on my last nerve for a while. Bitter, bitter and more bitter. BTW, why isn’t she on the talk shows? She does enough water carrying. Maybe her bitterness lies in that she tried to sleep her way to the top and it didn’t work out.

      • Alma98

I can’t stand her and I never thought she was a thought provoking writer. And I don’t get that some men think shes hot I really don’t. She really is jealous of PBO and Michelle’s relationship, her columns drip with envy.

        • conlakappa

It often seems to drip with Jameson’s as well…

    • morphus

      **blink** WOW

    • rikyrah

Good afternoon POU! I see the buzzards (looking at you Maureen Dowd ) are still circling around the contrived “diversity” issue…

EU ‘to propose’ peace plan after Israel vote

The European Union is drawing up a detailed new plan to restart Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, and expects to present it after this month’s Israeli general election, Yediot Aharonot reported Sunday. Citing diplomatic sources in Jerusalem, Israel’s top-selling daily said the plan was intended to “bring about the establishment of a Palestinian state on the basis of the 1967 lines with east Jerusalem as its capital.”[….] The newspaper said the plan “apparently will also include a demand to freeze all construction in the settlements.”

The report said the British and French foreign ministries are sponsoring the initiative, which is also backed by Germany and could be adopted by the full EU. Observers have long speculated that the international community would renew its efforts to restart direct peace talks, on hold since late September 2010, after the Israeli election.[….]

Army opens Special Operations flying missions to women

The Army will soon have women flying special operations missions. As part of a push by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno to open more combat roles for women, the Army is looking for women for pilot and crew chief billets for the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, according to the Army Times.[….]

Last year, the military opened about 14,500 jobs and positions to women that had previously been off limits. The Pentagon also removed a rule that had prohibited women from living with combat units, and Panetta asked the services to find ways to expand combat roles for women. In November, four women sued Defense Secretary Leon Panetta in an effort to force the military to allow women in combat.[….]

New York City is turning old parking meters into bike racks

New York City has come up with an ingenious way to double its supply of biking parking. It’s turning 12,000 decommissioned single-space parking meters into 12,000 bike racks.[….]

According the New York Post, the city’s going to be paying Louis Barbato Landscaping $1.9 million to turn those ugly poles into less ugly bike parking.Because the parking meter poles are well rooted into the ground, they’ll help keep the new racks from being stolen. And there are a lot of them. Which means tons more bike parking. Which means biking is that much easier. Which means more bikers! As long as they don’t all get run over by confused out-of-towners circling the block looking for a meter.

Executive Order 13583– Establishing a Coordinated Government-wide Initiative to Promote Diversity and Inclusion in the Federal Workforce

For Immediate Release August 18, 2011

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, and in order to promote the Federal workplace as a model of equal opportunity, diversity, and inclusion, it is hereby ordered as follows:

Section 1. Policy. Our Nation derives strength from the diversity of its population and from its commitment to equal opportunity for all. We are at our best when we draw on the talents of all parts of our society, and our greatest accomplishments are achieved when diverse perspectives are brought to bear to overcome our greatest challenges.

A commitment to equal opportunity, diversity, and inclusion is critical for the Federal Government as an employer. By law, the Federal Government’s recruitment policies should “endeavor to achieve a work force from all segments of society.” (5 U.S.C. 2301(b)(1)). As the Nation’s largest employer, the Federal Government has a special obligation to lead by example. Attaining a diverse, qualified workforce is one of the cornerstones of the merit-based civil service.[….]
