Sunday Open Thread: P.O.U Sunday Jazz Brunch

GOOD MORNING, P.O.U.!

As you get your Sunday breakfast/brunch on, enjoy the sounds of Duke Ellington and his orchestra performing his jazz suite, Such Sweet Thunder, at the Ravinia Park Festival in Highland Park, IL in 1957, and see if you can guess what this week’s series is about…

Was Hillary Clinton good at anything?

    • crazycanuck

She is good at staying with a man who can’t keep it in his pants.

    • jds09

I’m debating if I should shae my theory with ya’ll, I don’t want to be considered the crazy member of the family. Every family has one. lol

      • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

Tell us! We won’t judge you!

        • jds09

          Okay, if you insist. lol

Politicians that invoke large followings, either people love them or hate them, represents a faction within the American culture (psyche, so to speak.) Hillary speaks to the Betty Broaderick side of white women of a ‘certain age’ she made a decision to pour her talents into the career of her husband. Unlike Nancy Pelosi, who had two careers, raising her kids, then politics.
As a result, the Hillarys of the world she themselves as extensions of their husbands, when is an illusion. You can only be yourself, truly yourself. That’s why I think Hillary rings false and the PUMAs are enraged.

Broaderick ended up killing her husband and new wife who was a carbon copy of her at a younger age. And nobody could pick Nancy’s husband out of a line-up. Her power is unattached from her husband.

Underneath all of the white woman feminist rhetoric, Hillary made a 1950’s white woman’s choice of where to put her labors. She’s smart, knows policy inside and out, forceful and can be charming at times, but its always in service to the white man. Whether it’s Bill, McCain ( 2008 CIC bullshit) or Wall Streeters, people sense it, that’s why she will never be president.

Hillary is a glorified corporate housewife. There I said it.

          • Admiral_Komack

            Hillary ain’t that smart.
IF she’s so smart with policy, the Clinton’s would have passed health care, gays in the military, etc.
IF she were smart, she would have NEVER been part of the “dodging bullets at Tuzla” foolishness.

      • Miranda

I think Hillary was always the brains of the Clinton operation. Slick Willie had the charisma and the penis.

The right wing smear campaign against Bergdahl has begun, and the media is all to willing to help push the “He’s a traitor!” talking point.

Last night, CNN’s Jake Tapper was on Twitter, trying to get in contact with @codyfnfootball, a man who claims he served with Bergdahl, and calls him “a traitor”.

    http://twitter.com/jaketapper/status/473102932209315841

So, when you see Tapper and other media folks pushing this guy’s story, you know how it all started.

    • Kennymack1971

The speed with which they dropped any pretense of supporting our troops is breathtaking.

They’ll do anything to try to make PBO look bad.

        • AxelFoley

Anything. If bin Laden was still alive, they’d be trying to ask him his opinion on PBO’s job as President.

    • goldenstar

So, why would an alleged deserter be labeled a traitor???? So, if a person exhibits PTSD, he becomes a traitor? These people cannot keep their judgmental and accusatory stories straight. They are full of resentment and lack compassion.

What’s sad and wrong is that they get the spotlight from these journalists.

  • Kennymack1971

Good morning POU. So the GOP and their Village mouthpieces have come up with their Narrative. They’re going to make the case that we negotiated with terrorists and secured the release of a deserter. They’re already going all in to trash Sgt. Bergdahl and it looks like they’re coming for his parents too. All because the Black President can never ever have a win. Obama Derangement Syndrome is real.

    • jds09

Please proceed….this will not end well for them. They do not want to re-try the roll-out of the Iraqi War in front of an American public that is no longer distracted by a failing economy. ODS is real and nothing is lost is cyberspace. Villagers beware.

    — -Rice fires back on Bergdahl criticism

    — — -U.S. National Security Adviser Susan Rice pushed back on Sunday against GOP claims that the administration negotiated with terrorists by transferring five Taliban prisoners in Guantanamo Bay to Qatar in exchange for the release of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl on Saturday.

“I wouldn’t put it that way,” Rice said on CNN’s “State of the Union” when asked if the exchange means that U.S. officials can no longer say they don’t negotiate with terrorists.

“Why didn’t you notify Congress?” Crowley asked, referencing the law that requires the president to alertCongress in 30 days before transferring any prisoners from Guantanamo Bay.

Rice said that Bergdahl’s health was “growing more fragile” and that “we were very concerned that time was not something that we could play with.”

“The Department of Defense consulted with the Department of Justice and given the acute urgency of the health condition of Sgt. Bergdahl and given the president’s Constitutional responsibilities, it was determined that it was necessary and appropriate not to adhere to the 30-day notification requirements because it would have potentially meant that the opportunity to get Sgt.Bergdahl would have been lost,” Rice said.

Rice said the administration had previously notified members of Congress about the potential for such an exchange.
“We had briefed Congress in the past about this potential,” Rice said.

    — —-Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Sunday said the U.S. moved to free Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl from the Taliban in exchange for five Guantanamo Bay detainees “essentially to save his life,” according to multiple reports.

Hagel told reporters that U.S. intelligence “was such that Sgt. Bergdahl’s safety and health were both in jeopardy and in particular his health deteriorating.”

“It was our judgment that if we could find an opening and move very quickly … we needed to get him out of there essentially to save his life,” Hagel said.

“I know President Obama feels very strongly about that,” Hagel added. “I do as well.”

The Associated Press reported that Hagel also met with members of the special operations team the freed Bergdahl at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan. The Defense secretary told them they represented the true spirit of never leaving a comrade behind, a U.S. official told the news service.

Drunk Armed Racists Spark Shootout at Waffle House, Kill Black Cop (Video)

After an exchange of bullets early Saturday morning, off-duty police officer Kevin Jordan was left dead and the man who shot Jordan left in critical condition, shot by Jordan’s brother.

Jordan was working an overnight shift as security at a Waffle House restaurant in Griffith, Georgia, when two men and a woman caused a disturbance around 2:30 a.m., according to Griffin Police Lt. Mike Richardson. Jordan intervened, but the conflict escalated, and the woman, identified as Chantell Mixon, began a physical altercation. According to Cleveland.com:
Jordan was attempting to arrest Mixon when one of the men, Michael Bowman, fired at the officer’s back, Richardson said. Police believe Jordan was shot five times. At least one bullet penetrated the bulletproof vest Jordan was wearing, Richardson said.

Jordan’s brother, Raymond Jordan, had come to the restaurant to visit and fired his weapon, striking Bowman, Richardson said. Raymond Jordan has a valid permit in Georgia, he said. It is not known how many times Bowman was hit or whether he has an attorney.

Raymond Jordan told Atlanta’s Channel 2 that “the only regret I have is that I didn’t kill him.”

      From the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

The Griffin Police Department has asked the public to pray for Officer Kevin Jordan’s family, who will have to make funeral arrangements just as they were preparing to celebrate the upcoming high school graduation of one of his seven children.

President Obama has set up the Press and GOP again..this time on the VA and by extension the way it treats the troops including POW.

I think this is a battle hagel and joint chiefs actually want.

The speed in which the media has moved to discredit bowe is incredible and in the same breathe dishonor troops as a whole. Dems…the President is writing your ad for you for the midterms. Get a backbone. Ohhhhh and just watch the parents of this soldier go into battle, and if you have any sense go get the Tillman family to show difference in leadership.

    Let’s go GOP..start impeachment already…midterms are here

White media establishment are so predictable, none can hide their bigotry. Andrea Mitchell and white media ladies are bitter because this release highlights Hillary’s inability and callousness during her tenure as Secretary of State. You bet they will go to bat for her.

The President has shifted to VA, treatment of troops and gitmo…oh just watch his speech in France coming up

    • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

Andrea Mitchell like the rest of the MSM hates the Clintons. However they find them useful for divide and conquer among Democrats. They could care less whether this release puts Hillary Clinton in a negative light even though her tenure as SoS was more of a mixed bag than anything. Andrea and her weren’t exactly best buddies in the 90’s and my guess is that hasn’t changed much.

      • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

Really? I had the impression that Andrea Mitchell is a big Hillary fan. What happened between them in the 90s?

        • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

I thought it was that whole media clique thing about the Clintons came here and trashed the place stuff. Wasn’t Mitchell part of that crew?

Imo she’s a big fan because hey Hillary ain’t the Black guy. I’m wondering how fast that will play out if she wins the Presidency. 0 to a 100 in 8 seconds.

          • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

I think she’s definitely part of the Beltway Media Clique, but I don’t recall her ever being anti-Clinton, especially where Hillary was concerned.

Woody is right ! Mitchell and the rest of the beltway hacks can’t stand the Clinton’s. If Hillary were to become president, don’t expect the media to be nice. The beltway press is in the back pocket of the GOP.

    • nathkatun7

“can I assume any good journos will ask politicians to compare Iran-Contra to the current situation? St Ronnie vs Obama?”

Sadly, Lamh36, there are not that many good journalists in the United States. The vast majority of national media people, and especially the WHPC, have this visceral hatred of President Obama.

  • lamh36

Lordy, how can the GOP not see when they are being set up. Who other than the usual wingnut and Fox news breathers will even support this.

    Who’s gonna run on this?

Personally I hope they continue. Go ahead, malign the newly free POW without just cause…”Please Proceed…GOP”

    • Miranda

That’s my stance…let them go ahead and demean this soldier’s life…let them go right on ahead.

These are the Taliban terrorists that the media and the right wing GOP are attacking President Obama about because negotiated with them to secure the release of a captured U.S. soldier who had been a POW for over 5years. They are right there sitting in the White House, having a great conversation with, according to the GOP, the “Great St. Ronald Reagan the Magnificent.”

  • rikyrah

WHERE are the DEMS (outside the WH), calling bullshyt about the GOP complaining about us getting back a POW?

2012 GOP threat: Sgt. Bergdahl swap will be Obama, Democrats’ ‘Willie Horton moment’

…One possible reason the president chose not to notify lawmakers is that last time he attempted to negotiate Sgt. Bergdahl’s release, Republicans both formally and informally blocked all efforts to do so.

In addition to using congressional oversight, special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan Marc Grossman was told by Republican leadership that negotiating an exchange of Sgt. Bergdahl that involved detainees from Guantanamo Bay would be the president’s “Willie Horton moment,” a reference to the infamous “Revolving Door” advertisement that George H.W. Bush campaign used to make 1988 Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis look “soft” on crime…

    • Miranda

This is absolutely mind boggling. The Dems should be screaming until they are hoarse that the GOP would let a US Soldier ROT out of spite against the President.

      • Rhoda

This should make Hillary Clinton NOT an option in 2016. I have had serious doubts about her; that’s why in 2008 she was never an option for me w/how she was on Iraq. This just confirms it.

If the Democrats don’t find someone else; I’m going to seriously consider just supporting the down ticket races and making a protest vote for President.

I can’t pull a lever for her; not happening unless someone crazy like Rand Paul is the Republican nominee.

        • goldenstar

There will be someone crazy at the top of the Republican ticket.

          • Rhoda

When it comes to Hillary, I can live with Jeb Bush strange or Mitt Romney crazy (because that man …. such vibes!) but Rand Paul is another level.

          • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

Mitt Romney crazy means we will all be living out of regional garbage cans. Jeb Bush crazy could rival his brother.

I don’t hate Hillary or America that much.

Bob Bailey, Entertainer Who Helped Integrate Las Vegas, Dies at 87

By WILLIAM YARDLEY MAY 31, 2014

Bob Bailey, a Las Vegas entertainer, television personality and civil rights activist who helped break down racial barriers for decades, beginning when he arrived in 1955 to serve as an M.C. and singer at the Moulin Rouge, the city’s first integrated hotel and casino, died on May 24 in Las Vegas. He was 87.

His death was confirmed by his son, John, who said Mr. Bailey had Parkinson’s disease for about a decade.

Las Vegas was a deeply segregated place in the 1950s. Black performers like Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr. and Louis Armstrong were star attractions on the Strip but could not stay in the hotels where they performed. Often they were not allowed to enter through the front door.

The Moulin Rouge, which opened in May 1955 on the predominantly black west side of town, was a bold alternative. The boxer Joe Louis, one of its investors, greeted people at the door. The staff was integrated, from the kitchen to the stage, and the club’s late-night show, put on after the last of the performances on the Strip, quickly became a destination for stars both black and white, including Frank Sinatra, after they finished their shows across town.

It lasted just six months — financial problems forced it to close, though rumors long swirled that Strip casino owners had maneuvered to shut it down — but that was long enough to elevate Mr. Bailey’s profile and to lend urgency to the issue of desegregation.

Mr. Bailey became the host of local television and radio variety shows, rare roles for a black person at the time, and interviewed entertainers including Davis, Cole and Duke Ellington. For a time he also worked as a weatherman and movie host on a local TV station.

“Here you’ve got a time when people didn’t want black people to come in their restaurants,” Mr. Bailey told The Las Vegas Sun in 1996, “but they allowed me into their home.”

Mr. Bailey was a Republican, but he switched parties in the early 1960s in support of Gov. Grant Sawyer, a Democrat who promoted integration. Mr. Sawyer named Mr. Bailey chairman of the new Nevada Equal Rights Commission, an investigative body given the power to address discrimination by issuing subpoenas to casino owners and others.

“I was warned that if I didn’t stop subpoenaing, that I may end up dead,” he told The Sun. “They would drive by the house and throw a brick or something, and I wouldn’t know if it was a bomb or what it was.”

While at the commission, Mr. Bailey also helped establish a program that trained black people to work in casinos, including as dealers at card tables. In the 1970s, he headed a company that focused on developing minority businesses, helping some win government contracts. He also returned to the Republican Party. In 1990, President George Bush appointed him deputy director of the Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency.

“I have learned to work within the political system, and if you’re going to be in the economic thrust of this country,” he said, “you have to know how to move in the political system.”

William Henry Bailey was born on Feb. 14, 1927, in Detroit, the son of an autoworker and a domestic. When he was a young boy, the family moved to Cleveland, where Mr. Bailey learned to sing in church choirs.

He began performing at an early age and took the name Bob to avoid confusion with a cousin named Bill who was also an entertainer. He enrolled at Morehouse College in Atlanta at 16 and while there befriended another student, Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King later met with Mr. Bailey in Las Vegas during the civil rights movement.

In addition to his son, his survivors include his wife of 63 years, the former Anna Porter, who was a dancer at the Moulin Rouge; a daughter, Kimberly Bailey-Tureaud; and five grandchildren.

Mr. Bailey was still at Morehouse, majoring in business, when he arranged to audition as a singer for the Count Basie Orchestra. He toured with Basie from 1947 to 1950 and made several recordings with him, including “Blue and Sentimental” and “The Worst Blues I Ever Had.”

  • lamh36

I don’t know if this will be a stupid question, but I’ma ask anyway.

Ok, Al Qaeda is the terrorist organization right, are all of the Taliban considered members of Al Qaeda

Is the Taliban considered a terrorist organization, i.e. is it on a US designated terrorist list?

If the Taliban isn’t actually considered a terrorist organizatin, then does that mean that technically the phrase “negotiating with terrorist” doesn’t actual apply here since the negotiation was with the Taliban…?

Also too, what’s the difference between negotiating POW transfers in the case of winding down a war between countries. Aren’t there parameters for that too?

Also too, wasn’t this transfer discussion between US facillitated by Qataris? Are they considered a terrorist group?

Or am I totally confused and off-based here?

    • Rhoda

Ok, Al Qaeda is the terrorist organization right, are all of the Taliban considered members of Al Qaeda

Is the Taliban considered a terrorist organization, i.e. is it on a US designated terrorist list?

The Taliban are considered terrorists: for facilitating 9/11 and the terror they are inflicting on Afghanistan right now. Also, Al Qaeda is a terrorist organization, yes.

They are terrorists. POW transfers between countries or fighting insurgents has happened; but nothing like this. From what I’ve read it’s unique and reading between the lines; POTUS wanted it done and last time in ’12 it got shot down b/c of Republicans in Congress and Panetta and Clinton (which explains Panetta leaving and POTUS putting in Petreaus) so he was determined to get it done and they ignored the law using the executive signing statement as a fig leaf and figuring no one would come after him that hard. They’re straight up copping to ignoring Congress b/c of security and timing issues.

Also too, wasn’t this transfer discussion between US facillitated by Qataris? Are they considered a terrorist group?

Or am I totally confused and off-based here?

Qatar is a country and the Qataris were facilitating this b/c the Taliban opened up and office to negotiate a peace; but that broke down. The office was open and the Qataris and Germans have been helping to make this happen and acting as proxies.

That’s what I’ve understood from what I’ve read.

How are you? How’s it been moving back home? Hope this finds you well, lamh.

      • lamh36

        Ok, thx for the information.

I was just trying to figure it all out. Someone on another blog said that the Taliban is only listed as a terrorist organization by Russia.

But Al Qaeda is on the terrorist list…

Anyway, thx for the information and I am doing well

These sons of bitches are gonna be ROASTED.

And don’t tell me Michelle doesn’t have some stories about life in Washington.

That book is on pre-order from Amazon when announced.

  • lamh36

Hey Rhoda, here is the comments that confused me from LGF.

…Just reading through the BBC story makes it clear that the five we’ve been holding would, if this were any other war, be non-issues. None of them seem to have been charged with crimes towards the US, and the crimes they are suspected of committing should be prosecuted by Afghanistan, as we have no jurisdiction in such matters.

…Of course, another thing to keep in mind is that, technically, we did not negotiate with terrorists. Despite what Republicans on Capital Hill will assert and wingnuts will froth over, the Taliban is not listed by the State Department as a terrorist organization. In fact, according to Wiki, there’s only one nation that still classifies the Taliban as a terrorist organization: Russia..

We did not negotiate with terrorists, because legally we don’t consider them terrorists. We instead did what we always do at the end of a war: We negotiated the release of POWs we were holding in exchange for a POW the other side was holding. If the five were being held for crimes committed against the US, then they should have been tried for those crimes already in a court of law. If they were being held for crimes committed on the battlefield, then we cannot try them for those crimes under the Geneva Conventions. And if they are being held for crimes committed against the Afghan people, then the Afghan government has jurisdiction and must try them

    • Rhoda

Yeah, I don’t know what exactly to make of that, lol.

Another blog was discussing NOLA charter schools. Been meaning to write this here too, but never got around to it, so I’m posting it now…

I live in New Orleans. I was born and raised here. Everyone of my family members including myself attended public school prior to Katrina, we have 3 proud public school educated college graduates including myself in my immediate family alone, and a number of extended young relations in college now who were educated by public education pre-Katrina.

I do not have children, but I do have a nephew. I have young cousin with young kids who attend charter schools and the like. My cousin has 5 children ranging from the age of 17 – 5. Of those 5 kids, each one attend a different charter school in 5 different areas of the city, with 5 different school year scheduling and class day schedule. The youngest ones ride the school bus to school and the teens take public transportation.

In my cousin’t neighborhood alone, there are perfectly fine public school buildings that have been gated and boarded since right after Katrina (now going on 10 years). The two older children are attending charter schools where the classroom are still being taught in trailers ala construction sites.

My nephew, who’s 14 is going to attend high school next year. Less public schools, mean less spaces available for students. So you have a “lottery” at each charter school where students apply and are “selected” based on criteria and any kid who doesn’t meet the criteria is “wait-listed” and put into a lottery system and are essentially send to whatever school is left.

So with no public school system to think of, you now have parents trying to get their kids into the BEST charter school, but because of the selection process, those who do not meet criteria are places at whatever “not quite the BEST” school that is available.

My sister cannot afford to send my nephew to a private Catholic school, so she had my nephew taking entry exams at the few remaining schools that allows entry testing. He did well on the exam, but he was wait listed cause like every other parent in NOLA. Luckily though she completed applications for as many of the “better” but not “BEST” schools left in the city. He got into a good one, but he was the lucky one.

My cousin’s kids on the other will still be attending 5 different schools and when her youngest 3 are old enough for high school, she’s hoping maybe for better odds for her kids.
