    Good Morning POU!

Well somebody waking up with a bad headache this morning.

Gas station clerk with MMA training surprises thieves

Score one for the good guys.

A southside convenience store clerk turned the tables on a pair of accused robbers on July 10 on South Wayside near Interstate 45.
Mayura Dissanyake works at a Fuel Depot, but he’s also a semi-professional mixed martial arts fighter.

He was behind the counter when he noticed his co-worker returning to the store after a run to the bank.
Dissanyake saw two men jump out of an SUV and attack his co-worker. They were trying to grab the bank bag he was carrying.

He saw two men jump out of an SUV and attack his co-worker, trying to grab the bank bag he was carrying.

The stores surveillance cameras were recording as Dissanayake ran outside and kicked one of the alleged robbers in the face.

“The first guy I saw, I just kicked him in the face,” he said. “Then I punched the other guy.”

They were moves he learned from cage matches. Dissanyake has been involved with mixed martial arts for more than a decade. He says he was the national champion for five consecutive years in his native Sri Lanka.

Detroit Shuts Off Water to Residents but Not to Businesses Who Owe Millions

More than 15,000 households have had their taps turned off for being past due. Yet the bankrupt city hasn’t touched 40 businesses who owe $9.5 million in total.

DETROIT — In Detroit, even the most basic necessity cannot be taken for granted.

Some 15,000 residential customers have lost water service, and tens of thousands more are in danger of losing it, thanks to past due bills. But businesses owing hundreds of thousands of dollars have not been disconnected, Detroit Water and Sewerage Department records show.

According to a department list, the top 40 commercial and industrial accounts have past-due accounts totaling $9.5 million. That list includes apartment complexes, the Chrysler Group, real estate agencies, a laundromat and even a cemetery.

Meanwhile, stories of residential shutoffs abound. Tangela Harris been doing her best to keep up, but when she was no longer able to work she had trouble stretching her monthly $780 in disability benefits to pay the water bill. So her water service was disconnected. Harris has since come up with $1,100 to have services restored but is having trouble keeping her $180 monthly payment to the water department. On top of that, her home has entered foreclosure because Detroit water bills are rolled into property taxes.

“They can say my house is condemned and take it,” said Harris, 38, a community organizer. “People think we’re not prioritizing, but it’s not that simple when you’re under the poverty level. It’s a different mindset.”

her home has entered foreclosure because Detroit water bills are rolled into property taxes.

the plot thickens…is this the real end game?

      • rikyrah

Did not know this about the property taxes. This is a good point.

        • Town

I was reading about the histories of Georgetown, DC and Old Town Alexandria, VA. Both places started out as black neighborhoods but once the white people decided they wanted to live there, they jacked up the property taxes to drive the black people out. Once you owe property taxes they can either snatch your home or force you to sell.

They can’t move forward with their plans until the completely sweep the black folks out.

          • goldenstar

That would also include Hilton Head and many other coastal areas in. this. country.

    – – – –After Rejecting a Cease-Fire, Hamas Proposes a New One– –

    – – – – –Israel and Hamas went back and forth on Sunday over proposals for a humanitarian lull in the fighting in Gaza, underscoring the external and internal pressures on both sides.

By afternoon Hamas, the militant group that dominates Gaza, had called for a new 24-hour lull, hours after Israel declared an earlier one over in response to a barrage of rocket attacks from Gaza into its territory.

The Israeli military said in a statement shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday that it was resuming its aerial, naval and ground activity in the Gaza Strip “following Hamas’s incessant rocket fire throughout the humanitarian window” that had been meant to last from midnight Saturday through midnight Sunday.

I saw something about this posted yesterday but didn’t bother to read it because I was certain it was the same ole same ole bullshit. Finally peeped at it today….Its a given that Dems will attempt to commit suicide right when victory is at their doorstep. The GOP is literally in disarray, the media is giving it all to try and help them, and the Dems just want stomp on them while they’re on the ground. SUN, 07/27/2014 – 8:52AM

President Barack Obama’s request for billions of dollars to deal with migrant children streaming across the border set off Democrats and Republicans. Lawmakers in both parties complained that the White House — six years in — still doesn’t get it when it comes to working with Congress.

    – – –Prince reached astronomical heights of stardom in his film debut in Purple Rain, a rock musical drama that hit box offices on July 27, 1984.

The movie centers on a young Black Minneapolis native called “The Kid,” whose talented skills are rivaled only by a growing arrogance. As he spirals to fame, the singer deals with an abusive father, played by actor Clarence Williams III, and a love interest played by Apollonia

Purple Rain grossed more than $80 million and garnered a huge cult following. While some critics pegged the film as misogynistic, young women seemed to be its biggest fans. Prince’s musical talents were also showcased throughout the movie in a number of prolonged concert scenes. In addition to breaking the mold cinematically with its non-commercial aesthetics, Purple Rain also spawned several monster chart hits, including “When Doves Cry,” “Purple Rain” and the Academy Award and Grammy Award-winning “Let’s Go Crazy.” Both critics and audiences heralded the unique soundtrack, which sold more than 10 million copies in the U.S. and 20 million worldwide.

Black people will not fall for this okey doke bullshit.
Republicans, meanwhile, are engaged in a more long-term project. Priebus has set up GOP black outreach offices in cities like Detroit and had numerous meetings with black figures like Marc Morial, the Urban League’s president.

The Republican chairman has two aims: to get the GOP into the double digits among African-Americans in 2016 and to rebrand the party to voters of all colors as one that is diverse and inclusive.

    • Alma98

I’m sure they’ll catch a few coons in their net Miranda.
The majority of black folks who have watched republicans show their ass for over 6yrs ain’t voting republican. Talking out of both sides of their mouths will not get you votes.

      • rikyrah

they get the same coons they always did.

        • Alma98

    • goldenstar

The first agenda item for the Detroit GOP outreach office should be fixing the water bill situation in the city.

  • crazycanuck

Wait, what? the only thing dumb is this mofo

If Blacks reject any attempt by Republicans to reach out to us & work on specific policy issues, we are playing #dumbpolitics.

    • Miranda

The same night Barack Obama was sworn in as President of these United States, the GOP leadership made an oath to not do one damn thing but work to make him a one-term president…PERIOD.

But we supposed to work with these muthafuckas? Roland can sit his blockhead ass down somewhere for real.

      • Alma98

Republicans think we’re idiots. They want blacks to be like white voters who vote against their own best interests, once again it ain’t gonna happen. And Roland looking to get paid, he knows damn well republicans don’t give two shits about poc. They know that poc especially blacks are the backbone of the democratic party. And their base is dwindling so they’re trying to siphon off dems of color. As long as they have idiots like Ryan, Rand and others calling black folks lazy everyday they’ll fail.

        • MonieTalks

I had a conversation with a white co-worker of mine about politics a couple of months ago. She had your usual GOP/Fox News talking points. But I hit her upside the head with so many facts…she had to write it all day and I was giving her links and everything.

Then she asked why do Blacks vote largely for Democrats. So I gave her the history….and then I said think about this for a minute.

Remember the GOP 2012 convention…..who the hell does she think will align themselves with a party whose national showing on TV looked like a Klan meeting with a sea of white folks saying “We want our country back.” The GOP was so damn tone-deaf that they did not realize the optics of that……ain’t no sane POC have time for that period. You should have seen the look on her face….I swear her whole face illuminated when the lightbulb went off in her head. She still despises PBO…but after that convo..she was like..damn, you’re right.

          • Alma98

            Nothing but the truth Monie!

          • lamh

            You are better than me.

I refuse to even get into convos like that with my white coworkers. I might be too tempted to cuss them out and then I’ll become the crazy Black chick

          • crazycanuck

Is that a bad thing? lol

    • Alma98

Roland and these other folks like MHP above in Miranda’s comment have no influence in the black community. Hell most folks don’t know who they are, and that’s alright with me.

    • Joy

Fuck that punk ass bitch. Who’s got him in their pocket?

    • MonieTalks

Roland Martin was a huge GWBush supporter so nothing surprises me when it comes to his GOP shilling…that party is his first love.

He has also been known to tout the GOP “school-choice” agenda. But so much with school choice when those heathens can vote to kill school lunch program funding is urban schools but not elsewhere. The ascot bandit won’t move his lips and say shit about that.

      • Alma98

I think they’re also trying to make black folks look ungrateful. You see we tried to meet them half way but they rejected us. They ain’t slick at all!

Flip Benham’s group Operation Save America disrupted the services of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of New Orleans on Sunday while the congregation was honoring a member who had died. The organization framed their action as simply an effort to “present the truth of the Gospel in this synagogue of Satan” as part of their efforts “to defeat the culture of death.”

Apparently, hundreds of activists who oppose abortion rights gathered in New Orleans this week to hold a series of protests, but Operation Save America members took it upon themselves to interrupt this church’s worship service, telling members of the congregation they don’t have the “true faith,” presumably because Unitarian Universalist churches are pro-choice.

Operation Save America’s name may not sound familiar, so it’s worth noting the group used to be called Operation Rescue National, an organization that developed a reputation for extremist, sometimes violent, activism.

In this case, members of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of New Orleans, no longer able to hold a moment of silence to honor a congregant who recently died, sang while the anti-abortion activists disrupted their services.

The Rev. Deanna Vandiver, the UU speaker during Sunday’s service, later argued, “No one should invade the sanctuary of another’s faith to terrorize people as they worship.”

It would appear Operation Save America disagrees.

    • Alma98

North Carolina GOP mayor breaks from party, marches 273 miles to DC for healthcare reform
    By Scott Kaufman
    Sunday, July 27, 2014 11:33 EDT

The Republican mayor of Belhaven, North Carolina embarked on a 273-mile walk to support health care, rural hospitals, and Medicaid expansion, Blue Virginia reported.

When he arrived in Woodbridge, Virginia yesterday, Mayor Adam O’Neal (R) spoke on behalf ofSave Our Hospital, a group dedicated to preserving the Pungo District Hospital, which once serviced over 20,000 patients in Beaufort and Hyde counties.

The hospital had been purchased in 2011 by Vidant Health, who promised to expand it. Instead, the group gutted the hospital of vital equipment and, in 2014, shuttered it for good. In Woodbridge, Mayor O’Neal attacked Vidant, saying they made over $109 million in 2013 and closed the critical care hospital anyway.

“It’s immoral for a company to take health care away from people and keep your non-profit designation,” the mayor argued. “We’re also walking to see a bill introduced that HHS has to sign off in order to close a critical-access hospital.”

“We’ve had our health care stolen,” he said, adding that the Republican establishment in North Carolina’s reluctance to accept Medicaid expansion contributed to Vidant’s decision to close the hospital. “Not a person in power has sent a letter to Vidant telling them to get their act together,” he said, and North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory “won’t meet with us.”

“We need to stop playing politics with this,” the mayor said. “I’m afraid that my Republican colleagues in NC are going to get killed this fall because of Medicaid expansion. There’s 500,000 people in NC that could have insurance coverage the next 2 years and not cost the state a dime, and the state’s not accepting that. Now, if you’re representing the citizens, how can you not do that?”

Robert McDonnell trial to cast unflinching light on Virginia couple’s friends, marriage
    July 26, 2014

The star witness is a flashy dietary supplement executive who boasted of friendships with Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton. A manicurist, a party planner and a yet-to-be-named public official from another state also could take the stand.

In their much-anticipated federal corruption trial set to begin Monday, former Virginia governor Robert F. McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, will seek to win acquittal on multiple charges and restore their honor in the eyes of the law.

But over the course of the trial in a Richmond courtroom, expected to last five weeks, the McDonnells also will submit themselves to a potentially humiliating spectacle that will showcase an intimate view of their frayed marriage and odd personal relationships.

Woman battling late-stage cancer gets dream wedding wish fulfilled
    Jul 26th 2014 8:00PM

The couple tells KTLA reporters that they would not have been able to afford a ceremony like so lavish on their own, but after they shared their story volunteers jumped into action.

“They gave me the most gorgeous, spectacular wedding ever,” bride Iran Williams said.

For at least one day, it is not about hospitals or treatments or being sick. In this moment, cancer loses.

“Honestly, I can tell you this is the happiest day of my life” Williams added.

What Iran, Raymond, and their children will remember will be a dress that made mom feel like a princess, luxurious flowers, food, cake, and a breathtaking venue in the Pacific Palisades.

“This really made her happy and made her not think about [cancer] for a day” daughter Yvette Williams said.

The fairy-tale event was granted by the non-profit Wish Upon a Wedding and roughly a dozen vendors who volunteered their time and services.

“She was diagnosed again and they gave her the option to have the surgery and she chose not to because it was going to ruin the quality of her life,” Jeannie Ward, Wish Upon a Wedding board member, told KTLA. “So basically her prognosis is less than a year and we felt like we needed to do this for her”.

The biggest gift was being able to share this moment with her children.

“It was amazing because I do everything for my children and I love them so much” said the bride.

The couple does not know what lies ahead.

“This is my third time getting stage IV thyroid cancer, but I believe in miracles” said Williams.

Dr. Adlib Diagnoses Your Cable News As Having Alzheimers – Posted on April 3, 2014

Thanks for coming, have a seat. I wanted to talk to you about your
cable news stations. I’ve just had them in for an examination and I have something difficult to tell you so please prepare yourselves. Your cable news stations are suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. You may or may not have noticed some of the symptoms, telling the same stories hour after hour, day after day as if they’ve never told them before. They become fixated on small things, have bouts of fantasy about what might be happening at a given time or in the future and seem incapable of being a part of a rational conversation. I know you care about your news. Sometimes when you’re really close to something, you find ways of rationalizing away the signs of decline. You might have told yourself, my tv news is just a little confused or it’s just having a bad day. However, when you look at the big picture of its behavior over a long period of time, putting aside your desire for tv news to remain competent year after year, the sad truth becomes quite plain.

While I was examining CNN, it became caught in this conversational loop, talking about a Malaysian plane and how it was missing. No matter what questions or comments I made about things that were actually happening today, it just kept repeating and embellishing on stories about a plane being missing. One moment it was talking about the cause being terrorists, aliens or black holes swallowing the plane up, next it was having a running conversation with itself, asking itself what it thought about the thoughts it had about the plane. [….] It was a convoluted and confusing discussion with no real purpose but it seemed to make perfect sense to itself.[….]

When I walked into the examination room Fox News was waiting in, it was facing the smallest corner of the room with a distant, angry look in its eyes while chanting “Benghazi!”. I attempted to engage it in a conversation but it kept shutting me off with exclamations of “Pinhead!”, instead espousing one paranoia-based conspiracy theory after another, often blaming “females” “heathens” and coloreds” for plotting against them and causing all the ills of the world throughout history. Fox would exhibit flashes of hostility when anything it said was challenged. It began hording whatever supplies it could find in the drawers and cabinets, claiming, “That’s mine!” and “You can’t take this away from me!”.[….]

While I was in Fox’s examination room, I could hear MSNBC pounding on the connecting wall and by the time I actually got in there, its face was flushed and it had worked itself into a lather, with an actual froth around its mouth. It kept repeating all of the angry exclamations that it heard Fox making and was furiously shaking its head, “It’s a lie! They’re liars! They lie!”.[….] MSNBC would have almost identical lengths of lucid periods in which it could express cogent thoughts but they were immediately followed by 30 second statements that came off as devious and dishonest, stating just the opposite of what they were stating at length just moments before. There was disorientation as well, it would present it’s right hand but would call it “Left”. As I was leaving the room, MSNBC looked up at the ceiling and started smiling and waving. I asked it who it was waving to and it said, “My shareholders!”[….]

  • I must admit, I want to try them. Don’t judge me.

    • rikyrah

maybe the mac and cheese one

    • Aquagranny911

LOL! No judgement! I would try the Bacon, Mac & Cheese even though I am not a great potato chip eater. I do love bacon & mac & cheese! Probably tastes like caca but worth a small try.

      • I tried the Chicken and Waffle ones and they were OK. They tasted like maple syrup.

        • Aquagranny911

Yuck on that one! When I eat salty I don’t want to taste sweet. I know I have some bad food habits but sugar is not really one of them. I’m a much bigger fan of sour & salty than I am of sweets. Not to say I am going to turn down a bowl of ice cream or a piece of pie, lol!

Gracias for taking the hit on this one for me!

    Ryan Plan 3.0 Versus Reality
Mother Jones reporter Stephanie Mencimer calls out Rep. Paul Ryan’s poverty plan for what it is: a massive scam that’s impossible and prohibitively expensive to implement.

Consider, as a hypothetical, the food stamp program, which Ryan thinks should require people to work as a condition of receiving the benefit (ignoring, for the moment, that nearly 60 percent of working-age adults getting food stamps already work). More than 40 million Americans get food stamps. Providing all them with a hand-holding caseworker with whom, under Ryan’s plan, they’d draft long-term plans and contracts outlining their responsibilities and goals before they’d be allowed to eat, would require a fleet of roughly more than 700,000 social workers, assuming a reasonable caseload of about 55 clients per caseworker. Social workers don’t make much money, with a median salary of about $44,000 a year. Even so, 700,000 of them would cost more than $30 billion a year, not including benefits. That’s nearly 40 percent of what the country currently spends on food stamps and nearly twice the entire federal welfare budget. By comparison, the current food stamp program delivers 92 percent of its funding directly to people in need; only 5 percent goes to administrative costs.

Somehow, I’m doubting that conservatives are going to be super excited to pay for 700,000 new government employees. But wait, what if these are all private sector or non-profit organization hires? Surely somebody has tried the Ryan Plan 3.0 before, right?

Turns out the state of Nebraska did just that.

Hola POU! I know it is Sunday but I have a rant!

I have been so disturbed by this Detroit water shut off. I was raised in the desert where water is practically sacred. We actually still have old laws on the books that discuss the rights to water & that no one can shut off a person’s access to water for any reason.

That Detroit could allow over 40 corporations & businesses to owe over $9 million in water bills & not shut them off when they are shutting off the water to thousands of individual customers is unconscionable! What I saw that Detroit was charging individual customers for monthly water rates made me see red! We pay here, a fraction of that & our water is way more fragile & scarce.

From what I understand, rates have more than tripled recently in Detroit & can be tied as a lien to the property taxes which could result in foreclosure for home owners. I would love to see a real analysis of just which customers were targeted because this looks to me like a “land grab” of major proportions.

Cui bono! GOP are evil! Follow the money!

    My two pesos!

Last Call For Working Class Blues
Molly Ball at The Atlantic wades through election data and comes up with the fact that Democrats have recently done very well when they win the working class vote big. When they win it by a smaller margin, Republicans are able to make up the difference with wealthier voters.

Republicans consistently win voters making $50,000 or more, approximately the U.S. median income. The margin doesn’t vary too much: In 2012, Mitt Romney got 53 percent of this group’s vote; in 2010, Republican House candidates got 55 percent. And Democrats consistently win voters making less than the median—but the margin varies widely. In fact, whether Democrats win these voters by a 10-point or a 20-point margin tells you who won every national election for the past decade.

In 2004, Democrats won the working-class vote by 11 points; George W. Bush was reelected. In 2006, Democrats won the working-class vote by 22 points and took the House and Senate. In 2008, Democrats won by 22 points again, and President Obama was elected. In 2010, the margin narrowed to 11 points, and Republicans took the House back. In 2012, Obama was reelected—on the strength of another 22-point margin among voters making under $50,000.

‘Musicians On Call’ bring music for the soul to patients’ beds

[….] For more than a decade, volunteer artists with Musicians On Call have given bedside performances to patients undergoing treatment or unable to leave their hospital beds.[….] Since 1999, Musician On Call volunteers have performed for more than
415,000 patients in hospitals, nursing homes and hospices – but only in a handful of states.

Griffin said the organization hopes to aggressively grow throughout
2015 and expand beyond its seven “hubs” where most Music On Call programs are located: New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Miami, Nashville and Los Angeles. For hospitals without the bedside concert program, Musicians On Call provides a collection of albums.[….] Nearly 800 hospitals have requested them.

More GOP Minority Outreach, Rand Paul Edition
This weekend is the National Urban League’s annual conference here in Cincinnati, and of course this close to Kentucky, GOP Sen. Rand Paul just couldn’t resist showing up to Randsplain to us black folk why Republicans are the bomb diggety. Or something. Very few people wanted to hear what he had to say.

So when Republicans ask blacks to give their party a second look, they have a hard time finding an audience. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky confronted this on Friday when he appeared at a highly publicized speech to the National Urban League Conference to see row after row of empty chairs. The space did not look much fuller after one of the organizers urged people seated near the back to fill in the front rows.

He pushed forward, quoting Malcolm X: “Nobody can give you equality or justice. If you’re a man, you take it.” And he sounded empathetic as he described the arrests of three young black men as they waited for a bus. Their apparent crime, he said, was “waiting while black.” And he delicately acknowledged what was perhaps the biggest cloud hanging over his visit: hiscomments in 2010 in which he suggested that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 encroached on individual liberties. He told the crowd he supported the law unequivocally.

The speech in Cincinnati was his latest before a mostly black crowd, and it was a demonstration of how Mr. Paul — however improbably — has become the only major figure in his party who seems eager to keep going back to African-Americans to appeal for support even if his approach unsettles some fellow Republicans.

That Malcom X quote rings pretty hollow when Paul has attacked President Obama and Attorney General Holder for “overstepping their Constitutional authority”. It rings even more hollow given the fact that Paul has voted against Democratic jobs bills, immigration bills, climate change legislation, the Paycheck Fairness Act and efforts to increase the minimum wage, all things that would help African-Americans…and all Americans for that matter. It’s great that he wants to do something about sentencing laws for drugs, but even if he actually had a change of heart on the Civil Rights Act, he’s still publicly come out against the Voting Rights Act.

He wants to court the black vote. He just doesn’t want too many of us to be able to vote.

Rand Paul isn’t interested in justice or equality. Rand Paul is interested in Rand Paul.

Hoop Sistas: Transforming an Entire Generation in Ghana

In Ghana, basketball is just another sport. Brigitte Dzogbenuku
intends to change that and make it a means to transform an entire
generation of disaffected Ghanaian youth through mentorship. Hoop Sistas is Brigitte’s solution for young women searching for a
sense of purpose and better options. She believes that the lessons
learned on the court are the same ones girls can apply to life.
Self-confidence, discipline, collaboration and ambition all flow
    naturally during basketball club sessions.

The clubs combine sport with educational workshops on career
development and women’s health. They also tackle bigger issues — the local and global challenges that threaten women’s progress overall. “I want these women to be empowered to be able to stand their ground, to hold their own, to help other people. Women in Africa need to realize how empowered they are.”

Comcast cancels event at state senator’s home – July 26, 2014

Comcast has canceled a promotional event at the home of a Kansas state senator. The cable company announced the open house in a recent news release that paired Republican Sen. Julia Lynn of Olathe and promotional language about its home security service. After queries from The Kansas City Star about an elected official endorsing a commercial service, Comcast moved the event to another home.

Comcast spokeswoman Mary Beth Schubert says Comcast didn’t provide Lynn with any free products, equipment or services. Earlier this year, a Senate committee that Lynn chairs introduced a bill to keep cities from starting their own TV or broadband services. The measure died in the committee. Lynn says she thought the Comcast demonstration would give her a better understanding of how security technology works.[….]

Google and the Environmental Defense Fund entered a partnership to track pipe leak risks with innovative online maps.

The maps are part of a pilot project that uses specially equipped Google Street View mapping cars in hopes of gauging the potential of new sensing and analytical technologies to measure environmental indicators in ways that previously too difficult or impossible.[….]

The EDF and researchers at Colorado State University developed and tested the system for two years to the point that it could assess the amount of gas escaping from leaks of all sizes detected amid 15 million individual readings that were collected under thousands of miles of roads. The two entities believe natural gas companies fail to do such monitoring themselves, putting the public at risk.[….]

    – – —–More than a decade ago, when the young Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was struggling to get her first novel, “Purple Hibiscus,” published, an agent told her that things would be easier “if only you were Indian,” because Indian writers were in vogue. Another suggested changing the setting from Nigeria to America. Ms. Adichie didn’t take this as commentary on her work, she said, but on the timidity of the publishing world when it came to unknown writers and unfamiliar cultures, especially African ones.

Black literary writers with African roots (though some grew up elsewhere), mostly young cosmopolitans who write in English, are making a splash in the book world, especially in the United States.
