Sunday Open Thread: P.O.U. Sunday Jazz Brunch

GOOD SUNDAY MORNING P.O.U.!

As you enjoy your Sunday breakfast/brunch, take in the sounds of “the singer’s singer”, Carmen McRae…..

Carmen Mercedes McRae (April 8, 1920 – November 10, 1994) was an American jazz singer, composer, pianist, and actress. Considered one of the most influential jazz vocalists of the 20th century, it was her behind-the-beat phrasing and her ironic interpretations of song lyrics that made her memorable.[1] McRae drew inspiration from Billie Holiday, but established her own distinctive voice. She went on to record over 60 albums, enjoying a rich musical career, performing and recording in the United States, Europe, and Japan. (Source: Wikipedia)

When will the WTA give the SISTERS the RESPECT, When?

    • Miranda

When they retire and they have to beg Venus and Serena to promote women’s tennis because nobody will watch.

      • Admiral_Komack

“Help us Venus and Serena; you’re our only hope!”

        • JojoRaze

It’s funny cause it’s true. Even though the golf world rended its garments over Tiger being a serial cheater, they have quickly gotten over it because they realize he’s the money maker and no one cares about golf unless he’s involved. I watched my first full golf game on TV a month ago and I really wouldn’t have cared if Tiger wasn’t there.

    • JojoRaze

And the lack of respect is why I ain’t mad at Serena for her cripwalking yesterday. BTW, I didn’t like the Lochte grill thing either, but most people thought it was cute when Lochte did it. If you didn’t blink when Lochte came up there with a grill, don’t begrudge Serena her cripwalk, a year after she nearly died. Also, as I told my 17 year old nephew who thought the cripwalk was declasse, Serena deserved to do that dance because, especially in America, when Venus and Serena would play against Eastern European girls like Sharapova American audiences would root for the EE girl and not Venus or Serena. Wimbledon is the only place that Serena and Venus was always respected. I wouldn’t have cripwalked if I’d won, but I understand why Serena did it.

    Good morning CC and POU!

Troubled American out to be first Queen of boxing

American boxer Queen Underwood will look to put behind her the misery of years of child abuse by winning the inaugural women’s lightweight Olympic title when the competition gets underway on Sunday. The 28-year-old, whose father served six years in prison for abusing her and her elder sister, would provide just the sort of feel-good story to delight the authorities after lobbying to get women’s boxing included for these Games.

[....] “I would close my eyes and just dream about having a different life, because I thought that if I had this thing, this success, I’d feel like I was at a point of starting over,” she said. “That dream carried me through a lot of days. I can be an example. I am a survivor of child abuse, and I became strong and independent.”

Economist: There’s A ‘Wide Consensus Among Economists’ That America Needs To Raise Taxes To Reduce Deficit

There is broad economic consensus among economists that the United States will eventually have to raise taxes to pay down the federal debt, economist Betsey Stevenson said in an interview with ThinkProgress. Raising taxes needed to be a part of the equation — along with spending cuts — to pay down the debt if America is going to “provide the goods and services provided by the government that the American public has said they want,” Stevenson said at the Center for American Progress’ conference on the middle class and the economy Wednesday:

Did anyone watch the men’s 10,000 race yesterday? Me and my sister were jumping up and down hollering. Its amazing how you find yourself cheering for stuff you’ve never watched AT ALL (since probably the last Olympics). I was hollering for Galen Rupp as he found a push from somewhere to come up and get the Silver and was crying watching the guy who represented Great Britain hug his daughter (he won the Gold).

It was a truly beautiful moment as he and Galen hugged because they are really good friends. They both train in Oregon. This red head white guy representing the USA and this Somalian-Brit representing GB celebrating and hugging and the crowd going wild….it was yet another awesome Olympic moment.

Sepia — – -AHA! – – -He was trynta relate 2 the people of Israel with his religion. Wonder iff he considered THIS.? – –

    — – -Republican Islamophobes Shocked to Learn Romney’s More Muslim than Obama — —

    – – – -A mental representation that has been fabricated from organizing, identifying, and interpreting sensory information is known as perception. The information collected to contrive perception does not necessarily have to be real or true, but if it is repeated with high frequency and related to preconceived notions, it can certainly become factual in a weak or un-inquisitive mind. Fox News depends on, and utilizes, frequent repetition of blatant lies to convince addle-minded viewers that their lunatic assertions are true, and they account for most of the misperceptions about President Obama among their audience. One of the GOP’s favorite memes to cast aspersion on the President is not openly supported by nationally recognized legislators, but their deliberately ambiguous remarks have perpetuated the lie that the President is a Muslim.

    – – – -SNIP — –

It is curious then, that conservative Republicans, who are also evangelical Christians, are supporting presumptive Republican presidential nominee Willard Romney when he belongs to a religious cult that has more in common with Islam than it does Christianity. That’s right, the Mormon cult shares a similar founding and beliefs with Islam, and the Republican National Committee is lining up millionaire and billionaire donors to elect a man whose religion closely follows Muslim teaching.

    – – -He Grows on You Like a Fungus – —

—–Here are two excerpts from a new e-book that is coming out from the the Politico crowd. They are part of a larger narrative about Obama’s drive to win anything he attempts. You can find out who his card-playing partners are on Air Force One. I chose the following bits because they relate to Romney and the election.

    – – – -SNIP- – –
So, the president is focused on Romney and he wants to beat him like a drum. Personally, I find it interesting that the people who actually compete against Romney in the political field all seem to develop a rather active dislike for the man. And it doesn’t seem to matter whether they win or lose to Romney; they hate him just the same.
    – – -SNIP- – – –
He’s just not a nice person. He’s very arrogant. He’s very insulated. He lacks basic instincts for decorum and politeness. He’s the kind of person who is as likely to insult you unintentionally as intentionally, and you’re often left wondering whether he said something to be mean or just because he’s clueless.

    THERE IS MORE – – -TRUTH! :>)

All this is borne out in his – — -errr –“likability ratings. – -LOW.

    • rikyrah

of course the President has no respect for a man born on third, thinks he should be worshipped for crossing home and has nothing but contempt for those who can’t make it to second. what, exactly, about Willard is there to respect?

It’s so sad when I see black critics talk about “oh, if that was me, i woulda jumped down off that podium and whooped his white ass!!!”
    ————————

This is from it_girl and yesterday’s comments re: DL vs. Obama

Most black people hollering “I woudda done ___” against a white perpetrator wouldn’t do shit. They will whoop and holla around black people but never anyone white. Trust.

Look at the Congressional Black Caucus. They scream and holla that if a white person did what Obama “did” they’d be screaming and holllering. Fool, white people have been doing WORSE than what Obama “did” and they ain’t open up their mouths:

They ain’t UNLEASH when that man got up in the SOTU screaming YOU LIE!

They ain’t UNLEASH when Mitch McConnell said the only thing the GOP was going to do was ensure Obama was a one term president.

They ain’t UNLEASH when GOP governors across the country slashed gov’t jobs, which affected black people A LOT.

They ain’t UNLEASH when Chump Trump was running around demanding birth certificates & college records.

They ain’t UNLEASH on Michele Bachmann for claiming black children were better off in slavery than under Obama today.

They ain’t UNLEASH on Rick Santorum saying he’s tired of “hardworking taxpayers” giving their money to blah people.

They ain’t UNLEASH on Newt Gingrich saying black kids had no work ethic because they have no role models in the black community, so in order to teach black kids how to work he proposes making THEM (and not the white kids) be janitors in the schools.

They ain’t UNLEASH on Mitt Romney campaign for claiming that Obama isn’t American and doesn’t understand Anglo Saxon values like Romney does.

Naw, they ain’t say jack to none of this but quick to run to the WHITE MAN’S MIC to scream on Obama.

Where were they when Bush was ignoring the black people in Katrina? Ain’t had nothing to say until Kanye opened his mouth.

Where were they when Clinton was throwing black people in jail? They ain’t had nothing to say then and they won’t have anythign to say now.

Never listen to a black person who claims they woudda done XYZ if a white person did ABC b/c they are the FIRST person to lick the azzcrack of the white man and asking him how it feels and can they do more to please him.

DL Huguely has the same mentality as the black women shading Gabby Douglas for having nappy hair. Bitch, black people have nappy hair. Pull down your underpants and look at the hair down there…it’s NAPPY. You ain’t got no yakki down there! But Gabby’s “nappy hair” isn’t the reason they are shading here, they are shading her because she’s a black girl who is not where she is supposed to be! If she was getting pregnant out of wedlock or hanging in the streets they would have NO PROBLEM with her nappy hair.

The nappy hair argument and the You a Secret White Boy argument have the same purpose…to let Gabrielle & Barack know they are stills niggas like us and need to start acting like it instead of going places where they’re not supposed to be. SMH

Why should ANY American President be compelled to go to Israel? Is Israel part of the United States. When did they become a state?

Seriously I will never understand the U.S. constantly bowing to Israel. It’s nonsense. US gives Israel money and Isreal acts like they are the ones giving US money.

      I don’t understand it either.

    • Miranda

Its really a recent pandering demand…since the 90s. Its also very interesting to see how evangelical Christian zealots and Zionist zealots come together on Israel when really they hate each other. Two different groups hellbent on “protecting Israel” for very self-serving reasons. You have Pat Robertson and Sheldon Aldeson on the same side? HA! Ole Pat and the nuts like Focus on the Family think Israel is THEIRS…they just pretend to be all about “protecting the Jewish homeland.”

    • BoomerGal

Bishop Tutu answered that question back in 2002 in the Guardian (Britain) “Apartied in the Holy Land.” “The Israeli government is placed on a pedestal (in the U.S.) and to criticize it is to be immediately dubbed anti-Semitic.” “People are scared in this country to say wrong is wrong because the Jewish lobby is powerful-very powerful.”

    Across state lines

    By Kay
    August 5th, 2012

Wanted to talk about college students voting because I’ve now gotten two emailed questions on it.

There are lots of unsubstantiated allegations made by media and conservatives about certain groups of voters, and, oddly enough, ALL of these unsubstantiated allegations are directed towards groups of voters who (mostly) vote for Democrats.

I live in Northwest Ohio. It’s cold. We have a large group of retired people who own homes in Ohio but actually spend very little time here, because they also live in Florida. However, every time we try to fund local public schools adequately (thankfully, our public schools are still truly public, and not taxpayer-supported “reformed” for-profits) we encounter huge pushback from part-time Ohio residents who object to paying property taxes. This is baffling because Ohio has a “homestead exemption” on property taxes that was enacted to protect seniors from large increases in property taxes. But I’m a lawyer, I know the residency rules and I think these anti-tax Tea Party seniors fit within the residency requirements for Ohio. I wouldn’t dream of accusing them of playing fast and loose with the rules by voting in Ohio, because that would be unfair and probably WRONG on the facts. Yet, nearly every day I read a fraud accusation leveled at some other group of voters, always young people, poor people, or racial or ethnic minorities. Weird how that works, isn’t it?

I honestly have no respect for people that squeal about damn taxes. I really don’t. I cannot stand people that are so stupid that they have no idea on just what an important role taxes play in our basic life. These dummies take everything for granted. I just can’t with them.

  • Miranda

I would neva link to the Daily Caller, but I saw this on twitter…the headline is enough – but the first few paragraphs just tickle me (be it true or not)

Obama aides say president now has a personal ‘genuine disdain’ for Romney

For President Barack Obama, it’s now personal.

A new book cites Obama aides saying that the president has a “genuine disdain” for Mitt Romney.

“One factor made the 2012 grind bearable and at times even fun for Obama: he began campaign preparations feeling neutral about Romney, but like the former governor’s GOP opponents in 2008 and 2012, he quickly developed a genuine disdain for the main,” author Glenn Thrush writes in the soon-to-be released e-book “Obama’s Last Stand.”

Thrush — a reporter for Politico, which published book excerpts Sunday —- writes that Obama’s feelings for Romney are different from how he personally felt about other Republican opponents on the Hill and campaign rivals of the past.

“Obama, a person close to him told me, didn’t even feel this strongly about conservative, combative House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, the Hill Republican he disliked the most,” Thrush writes. “At least Cantor stood for something, he’d say.”

    • Tafr

Yes because Romney is a pathological liar. Honest men such as our president have little to no respect for a liar. Not to mention the president knows exactly what Romney has in store for the people of this country if he is elected. The president also know what is in those tax records I bet money on that.

To each his own. Cause what I’d like to do to Cantor can’t be posted.

      • conlakappa

I think Cantor is as much of a phony, soulless, snake-oil salesman as Mittens but I guess he is only one of many with whom the President has to deal and wouldn’t be required to debate but Lying Dead-Eyes is different. /shrugs

Update on the shooter in Oak Creek ,WI: They can’t go inside the temple because the shooter is still in there. They can’t help people who have been shot. I’m not an ultra religious person, but sending prayers to the people in the temple and their loved ones. Have mercy.

    • crazycanuck

I reading 14 dead, is that true?

      • Alma98

They haven’t said yet cc people are still trapped inside the temple. People are using their cell phones to call their families. They said it’s more than one person a young man talked to his mom hiding in the bathroom. She said they tried to blow up the building.

        • crazycanuck

OMG. I’m also hearing there are children in there.

          • Alma98

Yes there are a lot of people still trapped inside.

      • Tafr

I just read there are 4 dead. What kind of world are we living in? Folks cannot even worship without the fear of being shot dead, dear god.

    • Tafr

Dear god where are you getting updates; nothing on the news yet.

      • Alma98

From my local news and they’re saying it’s more than one shooter..http://www.wisn.com/news/Shooting-reported-at-Oak-Creek-temple/-/9373668/15974938/-/tcsn53/-/index.html

        • Tafr

Thanks Alma CNN is finally reporting on this.

          • Alma98

I’m tickled at all the teabaggers in the comments complaining about liberal racism. In the same breath they say racist and stupid things. People are begging the journal to close comments. They don’t want people seeing their racist ways.

          • Tafr

Yea that reverse racism crap is strong in these idiots. I see folks saying oh Sikhs are not Muslim, these idiots thought they were Muslim. Well you know it does not matter to these clowns. They see a bunch of brown people in a temple and that is all they need to act a fool.

          • Alma98

The comments are revealing aren’t they. This is the most racially divided city in the US. I’m surprised this didn’t happen sooner.

          • Aquagranny911

Racists don’t care. If it’s brown it’s down!

These shooters probably did think that. Just days after 9/11, a racist slug here shot a Sikh man because “he looked like a Muslim.”

We have Sikh neighbors just around the block. They are the nicest people & they will be grieving over this. I hope we can help them in some way.

The only way I know how to fight the hate is to stand with love.

          • MonieTalks

If I remember correctly, one of the first tragedies post 9/11 was a Sikh man killed in a gas station, mistaken to be a Muslim.

          • Tafr

Yea Monie you are correct. I remember that horrible crime.

          • Aquagranny911

Yes, right here in racist AZ to our everlasting shame!

    • Aquagranny911

      I join you in prayer.

Adding my prayers to yours. This is horrific.

    Today in Mitt-Romney-Lies-Like-a-Rug

    By Kathleen Geier

Via Think Progress, Mitt Romney, on his Facebook page, is claiming that President Obama is running to the courts to prevent members of the military from voting in Ohio. Saith the Mittster:

President Obama’s lawsuit claiming it is unconstitutional for Ohio to allow servicemen and women extended early voting privileges during the state’s early voting period is an outrage. The brave men and women of our military make tremendous sacrifices to protect and defend our freedoms, and we should do everything we can to protect their fundamental right to vote. I stand with the fifteen military groups that are defending the rights of military voters, and if I’m entrusted to be the commander-in-chief, I’ll work to protect the voting rights of our military, not undermine them

But as Think Progress’s Judd Legum points out, this is a big fat lie. Earlier this year, the Republican Ohio state legislature, in keeping with nation-wide Republican efforts to restrict ballot access, eliminated early voting in the state, except for members of the military. (Gee, I can’t imagine why they might have made an exception for the military, of all groups! Can you?) The Obama administration filed a lawsuit to restore early voting for all voters; its suit does not in any way attempt to restrict military early voting. Even Fox News, of all sources, acknowledges this.

I’m certain that Romney, or whatever staffer wrote the Facebook post for him, knows very well what the truth is here. But I think the point, strategically, is to muddy the waters, so far as ballot access and voter fraud issues are concerned. It is, after all, Republicans who are ideologically and operationally committed to massive voter suppression efforts. Especially when elections are close, as I believe the 2012 presidential election is likely to be, those efforts can make all the difference.

    • Alma98

They have said this on the news too cc.

    • Aquagranny911

DANG!!! They should turn those phones off! “Good Lord” is right & may he protect these people from more harm, Amen.

      • Alma98

This is the only way the police know whats happening inside AG. This has been going on since 10:30am.

        • Aquagranny911

I know but I worry for the safety of these people. This is just so evil, Alma. I’m an old woman & I feel so helpless except to keep praying.

          • Alma98

Hopefully they put their phones on vibrate. The people inside seem to be doing everything they can to keep out of sight. My youngest son is so upset he’s gone to his room and shut the door. It’s so telling that CNN is the only national news I see reporting this.

          • Aquagranny911

This kind of thing seems so much harder on the young. I’m sorry for your son.

Well, as someone else already pointed out if this was a white church, the news would be all over it. I don’t trust CNN. Your local coverage is probably more accurate.

Hang in there, Kiddo. My heart is so with you.

          • Alma98

I’m watching the local news even though I can’t stand them.

    • Alma98

Apparently the shooters are 4 white men with 9/11 tattoos.

      • Ebogan63

In other words, more dumb azzed fucking white males with guns.

        • Alma98

They have been buying up guns like candy since Walker signed the SYG law. I haven’t seen his shady ass since this happened. He’s no doubt somewhere trying to figure out what to say. Also he doesn’t want to anger the white folks.

        • Aquagranny911

Who will be declared “too insane to stand trial” but somehow sane enough to get sold guns.

    • BoomerGal

How about turning them off or on vibrate.

Lindsey Graham: Contractors Should Lay Off Workers Before Election

I know I am not alone when I say that the Republican Party has been doing their damnedest to sabotage the economy and the jobs situation for political gain. If you’ve been paying attention, even in the slightest, it’s a pretty straightforward fact. Since the 2010 midterms, we’ve not seen one inch of movement on the Republican side to alleviate the jobless morass the country has fallen into. Instead, we’ve seen a reigniting of the culture wars, from opposition to marriage equality to the war on women, but jobs? Eh, not so much.

So it should come as no surprise that Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has called on government contractors to layoff personnel just before the election, in protest of the scheduled mandatory defense budget cuts slated for the first of the year, due to the 2011 Budget Control Act. From First Read (emphasis added):

“Politicians, you know, quite frankly respond to pressure,” Graham said about the cuts set to begin in 2013 under the so-called sequestration budget.

“I’m urging every defense industry that could be affected by sequestration to put your employees on notice before November,” he continued. “The more it becomes real to us as to what comes the nation’s way, the more likely we are to solve the problem.”

Ladies and Gentleman, Mark Halperin is such a sad little bitch.

    Check this out.

But it is all status quo: Romney has no intention of releasing additional years; the media will keep demanding it; most Republicans will quietly gripe that Romney has handled this all badly; many Republicans will quietly argue that Romney should and will put out additional years; a few Republicans will continue to break ranks and publicly urge Romney to put out additional years; the Obama campaign and the White House will continue to laugh and laugh and laugh at how easily they have hijacked the debate, moved the spotlight off the economy, and put Romney on the defensive; and polls will show a mixed verdict on if the matter is hurting Romney or not.

The Obama team has been defining this election and driving the coverage of it; despite being outspent since July by the Romney campaign and the SuperPacs. Why? Because they have a message and they have a plan to promote; and now the really hard hits are starting to come on Romney and the MSM doesn’t know hot to cover for him. All that money; and team Obama is STILL winning this. And it’s killing folks like Halperin who hate Team Obama and wanted Romney to win.

The fact is, Halperin doesn’t want to admit it, but this is an economic issue. It goes to who Romney is and how he will run this country. People want to know about his taxes, his work at Bain, how he runs his life matters.

The GOP is going to be nominating someone that John McCain vetted and then rejected in favor of Sarah Palin. And I have no doubt that there are those in the Prudential Building that know WHY McCain did that; and the whole country will understand why by the end of this campaign.

    • rikyrah

you are absolutely on the money

    • rikyrah

the Obama campaign and the White House will continue to laugh and laugh and laugh at how easily they have hijacked the debate, moved the spotlight off the economy, and put Romney on the defensive; and polls will show a mixed verdict on if the matter is hurting Romney or not

the simplicity of the message is what’s overwhelming the GOP.

even the most low of the lowest-information voters

      understands..

WHAT IS MITT ROMNEY HIDING IN HIS TAX RETURNS?

it’s a simple message, and the more he doesn’t give them up, the more obvious it gets.

  • itgurl_29

I cannot believe Americans are being shot and killed in their place of worship, and it’s not all over the damn news. Something tells me, if their were brown people shooting up a Christian mega church full of white folk, they’d cut into the Olympics to cover the tragedy.

    • Alma98

It’s crazy itgirl, what’s even crazier is that our black sheriff is a teabagger. I wonder how he’s dealing with this he is a nasty piece of work.

      • itgurl_29

There was just a documentary on PBS the other day about the Sikh man who was killed by racist gunman immediately following 9/11.

        • crazycanuck

Trose just said on Twitter than CNN cut off a Sikh man who was saying they have been living in fear since 9/11

          • itgurl_29

That’s because we’re supposed to act like this has nothing to do with race and ethnicity. Nothing at all. I’m sure it’s just another clinically insane white boy who meant no harm.

        • Aquagranny911

To our shame, that happened here in AZ.

          • itgurl_29

            Yes. That documentary was heartbreaking.

    • MonieTalks

I immediately want legislation passed in every state that requires “stop and frisk” policies for White folks. According to Bloomberg and others, it is a powerful tool to prevent crime…and since we have had 2 mass shootings in a matter of weeks, by white men, it is needed. These people are hell bent on destroying freedom and American exceptionalism.

I would also like Rep. Steve King to hold a Congressional hearing examining why so many White people, from the Tea Party, NRA, militia group to even Republican members of Congress are hell bent on invoking violent rhetoric and calling for armed revolutions against their government. We must not stand by and let this happen. If it continues, we need to round the perpetrators up and send them down to the much maligned Guantanamo Bay ( that Congress refused to close) and keep these treasonous folks away from all the hardworking, decent Americans of all races, creeds, religions and faith.

And when we finally decided to prosecute the American terrorisst, hopefully Glenn Greenwald will be the defending attorney..he has quite the experience defending those who terrorize American citizens under the auspice of First Amendment rights. (/snark)

Gabby, Dominique, Barbara and Black women’s rarely rewarded quest for the recognition we deserve

    Inexperienced.
    Inconsistent.
    Insecure.
    Not focused.
    Unsteady.
    Lacks confidence.
    Can’t handle the pressure.
    Not ready.
    Not ready.
    Not ready.
    .

These are just a few of the many negative adjectives used in the days preceding Gabrielle Douglas’ historic gold medal win in gymnastics this week. Search any antecedent video and print stories about Gabby done by NBC, ESPN, the New York Times, and just about every other bastion of American journalism. It is easy to confirm that, repeatedly, these were the descriptors that always managed to be worked into any statement about her gymnastic efforts or to describe this lovely 16-year-old athletic powerhouse in comparison to her (losing) teammates on the U.S. Olympic team. Even when talking heads and pundits begrudgingly acknowledge that the speed of Gabby Douglas’ rise to the top of the women’s Olympic mountain was meteoric, they still cannot quite grasp how it happened or why it happened.

“The thing I love is that it makes people worry, it just shakes them up,” Douglas said of beating Wieber. “They say: ‘Dang, I am so shocked. I need to upgrade this and that and, oh gosh, where did she come from?'”

It seems that little credit is given to what must have been extremely hard work, to rise from a non-entity in the world of gymnastics to holding its highest female honor in just 2 years. Little credit appears to be given to the fact that Gabby Douglas won the all-around medal precisely because she posted excellent scores on all 4 gymmastic apparatus, the balance beam, vault, uneven parallel bars and floor exercise (unlike her teammates, most of who did not even compete on all 4 and did not score as well as she did on those they did compete on).

    • GN

Quite similar to the manner in which multiple editors of prominence at that site treat President Obama, and his rise from obscurity, and his accomplishments. Point is great, but the source site is ironic.

      • conlakappa

A bald attempt to get their good liberal credentials back. Lo, it’s been almost a year since the purge… I won’t go to the site so I wonder who wrote that. Professonial feminist Angry Mouse?

        • GN

I remember a piece of pure, utter hackery which mocked PBO for getting his lip stitched after a basketball injury. By one of that site’s black editors. That sort of bullshit isn’t going to be forgotten, like ever. As far as I’m concerned, dkos as an institution has no standing to make accusations that the media downplays black accomplishments. Not with some of the trash which I remember on there; they are part of the problem. I think that it was Camille who said yesterday, when you allow them to disrespect the best of you, they will destroy the least of you. And ANY site which tolerated the types of mocking and attacks on PBO and his admin (remember the accusation that Holder’s DOJ is a reincarnation of Jim Crow), and severe downplaying of his accomplishments is no better than a sports media which does the same to Gabby Douglas. I don’t mean to take away from the point of that article, because it is correct, but I just couldn’t dismiss the irony of it, and how blind they are to their contribution to this problem of double standards and downplaying black accomplishment, with their treatment of PBO.

          • conlakappa

Mocking over that elbow he took to the lip? What was he supposed to do, just let it scab over? Yeah, those people are cretinous and seem to have no mirrors in their lives. The only black male editor there was Brooklyn Bad Boy, whose negritude I always found dubious. He was the Super Black Man: veteran who then went to work on Wall Street and used to complain about the problem with finding a pied a terre/beach house/some such. Yes, it’s possible that such a person exists but it just seemed to ping too heavily on the Central Casting meter.

Your comments don’t so much take away from the point as give it full context. If it was written by Angry Mouse, I’m looking at it more askew: the crux of her many pieces was “someone made a white woman sad today.”

          • GN

Yup, the lip stitch piece was him. I couldn’t believe it. And I also remember him responding to a piece calling out the racism over there by saying, “who cares if there’s racism on dkos; I can look out my window in Brooklyn and life goes on” or some such utter foolishness. I got into it with him re: Velma Hart too, who of course was a cause celebre there. All of this is not to bore people with blog wars, but to just note the serious irony of a space like that calling out the media for downplaying what Gabby Douglas has accomplished. They have done the exact. same. freaking. thing to the first black POTUS. I don’t want to read complaints about double standards and purity trolls against Gabby now. I looked, and it wasn’t written by her, but my remarks (aside from the personal callout of bbb, who deserves it) are more about that space as an institution and its rotten, racist treatment of PBO (and many of his supporters).

          • conlakappa

Agreed. That was my point: you give the diary context in showing just how fetid the environment was. I remember well your squabble with him and his “who cares if it’s racist?” non-defense. He richly deserves to be called out because he gave all of them cover: how many times did we read “I checked with bbb and he said me saying/thinking this isn’t racist so there!” on that site? Yep, the President was called every thing but a child of G*d and his supporters were called lemmings, though not as nice. Misty-water-colored memories…

I just read a front page of Style article about Gabby’s hair that was in yesterday’s WashPost. Lawsy, it’s so nice to focus on the important things in this young girl’s life. I also checked out Lesli Foster’s twitter page and saw her responding to POU.

          • GN

I agree. Too often we see that disrespect and just let it slide. The entirety of dkos can go play in traffic as far as I’m concerned; they have no standing and no right to even publish a word complaining about the double standards applied to black people considering the legion of racists there with management support. I mean, really; to be frank, I get tired of seeing the links here and could do without that. Thank God for POU and other spaces which keep it real.
