      Great photo!

The Rev. Al was in D.C. on Friday as well and stood with faith leaders in Maryland in support of same-sex marriage. Black pastors + cool with gay marriage surely means it’ll get as much coverage as the “teh blacks hatez teh gayz” coverage that I read on the regular, amirite? Yeah, totally rhetorical question. It was on the third page of the Metro section of yesterday’s paper. So not even in the religion section but the page adjacent. It didn’t even have a photo of the event–I just saw one in an e-mail from The Rev. Al about it.

    – –State Department: CNN ‘indefensible’ on late ambassador Christopher Stevens’s diary — -

    – –The State Department – in a harsh, detailed statement – is accusing CNN of an “indefensible” invasion of the privacy of Christopher Stevens, the late U.S. ambassador to Libya, after finding his seven-page journal in the consulate where he was killed.

CNN fired back by saying that the State Department may be “attacking the messenger” because of “questions about why the State Department didn’t do more to protect Ambassador Stevens.”

CNN.com reported on Saturday: “Four days after he was killed, CNN found a journal belonging to late U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens. The journal was found on the floor of the largely unsecured consulate compound where he was fatally wounded. CNN notified Stevens’ family about the journal within hours after it was discovered and at the family’s request provided it to them via a third party. The journal consists of just seven pages of handwriting in a hard-bound book.”

It turns out that the late ambassador’s writings were the genesis of a reporting by CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Wednesday night on his program, “Anderson Cooper 360°”: “A source familiar with Ambassador Stevens’ thinking says that in the months before his death, he talked about being worried about what he called the never-ending security threats specifically in Benghazi. This source telling us that the ambassador specifically mentioned the rise in Islamic extremism, the growing Al Qaeda presence in Libya, and said he was on an Al Qaeda hit list.”

We should all be preparing ourselves to keep working after the election is over

An awful lot of people have opined about what they think might happen in a second Obama administration. As was the case in 2008, I fear that too many are not listening to the man himself because he’s broadcasting what to expect loud and clear. So let’s take a listen and see what he’s been saying[....]

“I do think I’m going to need to bring in the voices of the American people much more systematically, much more regularly. Finding the right mechanisms to do that is something that we’re going to spend a lot of time thinking about. Obviously, the Internet and the digital age helps.”[....]

“The one thing I feel very strongly about, as I travel around the country, is that as anxious as people feel about the recession we’ve just gone through and the challenges that we’re getting from around the world, Americans are really tough, resilient and decent, and they’ve got good instincts. The more they are actively participating in this process, the better off we’re going to be.” [....]

Exclusive: U.S. mortgage task force to act soon

The mortgage task force formed by President Barack Obama to probe misconduct that contributed to the financial crisis will soon take legal action, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said on Thursday. Schneiderman, a co-chair of the task force, would not say whether cases would be brought against individuals or financial institutions. He also would not comment on whether criminal charges would be filed.

But he said his office would take action and that he expected his federal counterparts on the task force to do so as well. “We’ll see actions being taken sooner rather than later,” said Schneiderman, speaking in an interview at his office in New York.[....]

Obama Nominee Would Be First Black Woman To Join Washington DC Trial Court In 30 Years |

Over half of Washington, DC’s residents are black, yet an African-American woman has not served on the federal trial court that presides over the District of Columbia since 2003, when former Chief Judge Norma Holloway Johnson stepped down from the federal bench. Yesterday, President Obama took the first step towards rectifying this by nominating Sentencing Commission member Ketanji Brown Jackson to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. If confirmed, Jackson will be the first black woman to join this court in over thirty years, when Judge Johnson took the bench. President Clinton also nominated a black woman, Rhonda Fields, to the same court, but she was not confirmed by the GOP-controlled Senate.

Pennsylvania Democrats use loophole to beat Voter Suppression Law

[....] According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Montgomery and Alleghany Counties used a loophole in the law that allows Colleges and Nursing homes to issue voter ID’s to anyone who resides in their counties. It also appears that other counties are seriously considering adopting the same approach.[....] Of course, the Pennsylvania’s Department of State’s spokesman Ron Ruman opposes this approach. “It’s clearly contrary to the intent of the law,” said spokesman Ron Ruman.[....]

Even though it does defy the political intent of Metcalf’s bill; Ron Ruman did acknowledge that it’s legal according to the Chester County’s Daily Local News. “We believe its legal, but we don’t believe it’s appropriate,”

Republican Staffers Charged With 36 Counts of Election Fraud

It turns out that the Republican Party’s obsession with voter fraud may be yet another case of projection. Four former staffers for resigned House Rep. Thaddeus McCotter have been charged with 36 counts of misdemeanor and felony election fraud. Yesterday one of those staffers, Lorianne O’Brady, pled not guilty to five misdemeanor counts of submitting fraudulent signatures on a ballot petition. O’Brady is the last of the four staffers to be arraigned; the other three, Don Yowchuang, Mary Melissa Turnbull, and Paul Seewald, were arraigned on similar charges on August 10th.

So what happened? It all started last May, when the Michigan Congressman announced that he was considering running for the Republican nomination for president. McCotter, who had served in the US House of Representatives for nine years, officially announced his candidacy in July of 2011, but was unsuccessful due to his relatively unknown status. In September of 2011, McCotter officially withdrew from the race and endorsed Mitt Romney.

And this is the truth about so many Republican policies: rules and regulations are put in place to scapegoat people who aren’t causing problems. In Florida, drug testing welfare recipients showed that less than 3% of those receiving welfare were using drugs illegally, while that discriminatory testing cost the state nearly $120,000. Mitt Romney has evoked the “47% of people pay no income tax,” conveniently ignoring that collecting income tax from all of those households would bring in less than than the president’s Buffett Rule which would slightly raise taxes for the country’s wealthiest. Reagan’s racist welfare queen myth still looms large in the conservative narrative, despite the fact that the Bush-era bailout for corrupt and irresponsible banks cost far more than years of welfare programs.

Chicago Aims to Eliminate Pedestrian Fatalities Within 10 Years

Good cities are built for walking, which is perhaps why Chicago has unveiled an ambitious plan to put pedestrians first. The capital of the midwest aims to eliminate pedestrian fatalities and drastically reduce injuries over the next ten years. How? Brand new expansive crosswalks, pedestrian islands, better urban design, and stricter traffic law enforcement.

The Chicago Tribune reports: The Chicago Department of Transportation’s pedestrian plan has more than 250 recommendations for long-term and short-term improvements, some of which were installed during this year’s road construction season. The priorities, as defined by CDOT with input from the public, include improving safety for children and seniors around schools and parks, improving access to transit, safer crossings at intersections and increasing space for pedestrians.[....]

I love this idea, too. Chicago drivers act like they own the terrain. They. do. not. Cities are made of drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, skate boarders, and others. There needs to be real enforcement of laws protecting all of us from two tons of moving steel.

EPA’s New E-Waste Program Has Good Points, But Still Fails In One Major Area September 21, 2012

Yesterday, the EPA announced a new program that aims to tackle the growing e-waste problem in the country. The “Sustainable Materials Management Electronic Challenge” encourages electronics companies to take back or recycle more of their products through certified recyclers. There are lots of good points to this new program. It’s a volunteer program where companies can join at three different levels: bronze, silver or gold.[....]

Several major companies have already signed on like Best Buy, Dell, LG Electronics USA, Samsung North America, Sharp and Sprint. Those are the good parts, but one major flaw is the lack attention to the practice of exporting e-waste to developing countries.[....]

More than 1,000 pastors plan to challenge IRS by endorsing presidential candidate

More than 1,000 pastors plan to openly defy the IRS by telling their congregation on October 7 to vote for a particular presidential candidate, according to Fox News.

The annual event, dubbed “Pulpit Freedom Sunday,” has been organized by the conservative Christian group Alliance Defending Freedom. The pastors participating in the event plan to preach about the election, endorse a candidate, and send video of their sermon to the IRS.

“The purpose is to make sure that the pastor — and not the IRS — decides what is said from the pulpit,” Erik Stanley, senior legal counsel for the group, told FoxNews.com. “It is a head-on constitutional challenge.”

Why Is Romney Such a Loser? Seven Theories

It’s a serious question. On the basis of fundamentals, the race should be a squeaker. The Yale economist Ray Fair’s prediction model, which ignores the opinion polls and just looks at economic factors, currently puts Obama’s share of the popular vote at 49.5 per cent, implying that Romney would almost certainly get a narrow majority in the electoral college and win the election. Because the margin of error in Fair’s forecasting equation is three per cent, he isn’t really predicting a Romney victory; he’s just saying that the race should be close, really close. As of today, it isn’t.

I know these people forget that you can’t use models based on generic situations or candidates. Obama is one of the best politicians in the country who has a winning message. FDR won re-election with high unemployment, and Reagan won with 7 % + unemployment and high interest rates. Both in landslides so the media needs to drop the narrative.

    I Was a Welfare Mother

I WAS a welfare mother, “dependent upon government,” as Mitt Romney so bluntly put it in a video that has gone viral. “My job is not to worry about those people,” he said. “I’ll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.” But for me, applying for government benefits was exactly that — a way of taking responsibility for myself and my son during a difficult time in our lives. Those resources kept us going for four years. Anyone waiting for me to apologize shouldn’t hold his breath.

Okay POU, I’m going to have to do some serious prying of my Sis out of Raul Grijalva’s campaign office next week. He’s her Rep & she’s friends with his wife but that’s not the only reason she hangs there. I had to shame the little brat this morning because one of the reasons she likes working for him is because of the FOOD! His volunteers lay out the food for the workers like you would not believe!

This brings me to my point…For those of you who, for whatever reason, can’t phone bank, canvass or whatever could you drop off some food even once in a while to your local campaign offices? You could make it yourself if you have the time or pick up something & take it there. You just can’t imagine how much the volunteers appreciate this. An army marches on its belly & our good volunteers need the fuel to keep up the good work.

    Just my two pesos…

    • goldenstar

You are correct! Part of our leadership team is a hospitality committee that deals with food, supplies, utensils, and recycling. This is only part of how we see our work and the importance of volunteers and their well-being.

      • Aquagranny911

Excellent! Everyone can do something to help. I’ve heard people say they were not comfortable with phone banking or canvassing so I tell them: “We could use you in the office but if you can’t do that then see what food or other supplies you could contribute.”

We have a guy who drops off a case of water bottles every week. We really appreciate that. In our hot dry climate we make sure every volunteer has water when they leave.

    excerpt:
Based on Villalobos’ statements to investigators and what they’ve seen on his Facebook page it appears he was obsessed with the tigers and just wanted to be with them, police said.

According to police spokesman Paul Browne, Villalobos told NYPD detectives that his leap was definitely not a suicide attempt, but a desire to be “one with the tiger.”

I don’t even like animals, but they better not put that tiger (who was minding her or his business when this jackass fell from the clouds) to sleep or in any way harm the tiger due to the actions of this idiot. Don’t know why, but stories like this piss me off so much.

      • Aquagranny911

They do me too but I understand that the tiger was not blamed & that while he did bite the guy a bit he did not rip his throat & kill him which he could have easily done before the zoo keepers intervened. Most of the guy’s more serious injuries were sustained in the fall.

I wonder if this estupido nut case wanted suicide by tiger. I like animals of all kinds but I have great respect for the wild ones & also understand the limits of ones we think we have domesticated.

Mormon writer says he faces excommunication for criticizing Romney

The managing editor of MormonThink.com, an online magazine that challenges Mormon teachings, said he faces excommunication because of his writings – including some critical of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, a Mormon.

David Twede, 47, has been summoned to appear before the disciplinary council of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Orlando on Sept. 30, when he could face “disfellowshipment or excommunication,” according to a letter he posted on his blog.

The letter stated that Twede was “reported to have been in apostasy,” an offense in which a member attempts to lead people away from church teachings.

    Mitt Romney: impossibly screwed

He has to come across as a sincere, transparent, credible leader. But he shouldn’t reinvent himself.
–Steve Deace, “an influential Iowa-based conservative radio host”

There’s a ream of these impossible tips in the Hill piece. Try being sincere, Mitt; seem transparent, Mr. Romney; just conjure up some credibility like you’re ordering pie, Governor. Be the opposite of who you are but for heaven’s sake don’t reinvent yourself.

And while you’re at it, dear leader–and this advice is even more mind-blowingly asinine than the above–”offer calm clarity about what a Romney administration would do.”

Yeah. Nice touch. Be calm, Governor Romney, as you clearly project trillions in additional debt and vividly pledge the impoverishment of seniors and graphically promise more endless global wars.

You see, Governor, many voters will viscerally, violently disagree with you, but gee won’t they admire your political honesty?

The realpolitik of it is a simple, deafening, resoundingly conspicuous No

Romney’s uncomprehending ’60 Minutes’ interview, and my uncomprehension

Last night I was rereading some of H.S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail ’72, because I was suddenly, inexplicably gripped by a need to sort out the McGovern staff’s baroque parliamentary maneuverings with respect to seating South Carolina’s delegation at the Democratic convention–a cat-and-mouse complexity which I never understood the first time I read (and reread) Thompson’s account years ago, and this morning, I still don’t understand it.

At any rate, as I was unsuccessfully plumbing this apparently abiding mystery I ran across one of the many unrelated quotes that Thompson peppers his monograph with, this one, from Saul Alinsky: “Don’t worry, boys, we’ll weather this storm of approval and come out as hated as ever.”

Thus intruded a searching recollection. Mitt Romney is as hated as ever, true enough, but has he ever experienced a storm of approval? Of any severity? About anything? Even his own nominating conventioneers seemed leery and quietly skeptical of the man. Romney may be the GOP’s McGovern–or Goldwater–in terms of electoral outcome, but both McGovern and Goldwater were adored by their bases, their bases loved them, their guys fought the good fight and they lost with honor, on principle.

found this comment at pm carpenters:

Here is what Romney doesn’t get. Obama has slit the throat of Reaganism. He is getting away with it because he is calling it by its proper name, trickle down economic, because no smart politician would openly attack anything named “Reagan”. Even so, Obama has slit the throat of Reaganism, in the prison yard, in front of everyone – and he is getting away with it.

Romney and all the GOP politicos can do nothing but wave the bloody shirt, but there is no magic in the bloody shirt.

The only mistake Romney made related to the video was assuming no rich person in the room would tape what they tell each other in private, all day every day. In my discussions with conservative acquaintances who do not know I am a librul, they were unanimous in being glad that Romney told the truth. They are convinced that the truth of Reaganism revealed and unleashed will win this election.

Reaganism is dead, and Obama killed it.

The upcoming debates will mirror Achilles dragging Hector’s dead body behind his chariot as he circles the imprenatrable walls of Troy.

Can you believe this! Of course you can!

I just read this latest piece of Miss Ann caca printed in the Daily Beast…..

“We call the rope line now the advice line,” she said, laughing, explaining that “everyone cares and everyone wants to help and everyone wants to just give their piece—a little piece of advice—so I feel like my best advice is just to bring peace and calm to him and just trust in him and just say, ‘I know you can do it,’ but not to give him any advice because it gets too overwhelming.”
