Sunday Open Thread: The Sounds of Muscle Shoals

In an obscure northwest corner of Alabama, two hours and change south of Nashville, Tenn., and about twice that west of Atlanta, legends were born. The Muscle Shoals Sound Studio was a recording mecca for rhythm and blues, rock and pop artists in the ’60s and ’70s.

In 1969, four local session players known as the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section decided to open up their own recording studio. David Hood, the group’s bass guitarist and studio co-founder, says the studio’s name was a joke of sorts.

“There was a Motown sound, there was a Nashville sound, there was a Memphis sound, and I said, ‘Muscle Shoals Sound,’” Hood tells NPR’s Debbie Elliott. “And we all thought that was just the funniest thing. And then after a bit we thought, ‘Heck, why not?’”

In fact, that sound was already developing in Muscle Shoals at a studio called Fame — the first studio in the region to cut a hit record. That was 1961′s “You Better Move On,” by local bellhop Arthur Alexander, and it was the first of a string of R&B hits recorded there by such artists as Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett and Clarence Carter.

Music was Muscle Shoals’ main export to the world in the 1960s and 1970s, to the point that this tiny hamlet (population 11,924) provided the soundtrack to multiple generations. Percy Sledge’s ultimate torcher “When A Man Loves A Woman” and Arthur Alexander’s soulful “You Better Move On” were among the earliest Muscle Shoals hits. Aretha Franklin began her long and successful association with Atlantic Records here. The foundations of modern R&B were cemented with recordings by Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Arthur Conley, Joe Tex, and dozens of others. Over the course of 25 years, pop and rock artists, including Bob Seger, the Allman Brothers, the Rolling Stones, and Paul Simon, would record here, drawn by the town’s inimitable collection of musicians and producers.

Muscle Shoals seemed an unlikely place for a celebrity crowd: the nicest hotel was a Holiday Inn, and sometimes the area’s studios would put artists up in mobile homes at the local trailer park. But the music kept the stars coming, and in its heyday in the mid-70s, the area was home to eight studios.

“I think they just got funkier records here than they did anywhere else,” says Fame studio president Rodney Hall. “And it’s a lot more laid back than any other music center in the country.”

Artists from outside the South also found their sound there. Detroit rocker Bob Seger’s signature song — “Old Time Rock ‘n’ Roll” — began as a demo tape at the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio. An engineer’s mistake gave the song its distinctive da-da-da intro. Seger liked the sound and kept it in the final song.

Clarence Carter, who has been recording in Muscle Shoals for nearly five decades, says there’s a vibe in the town that he could never capture when he recorded in California.

“There is some soul in Alabama that you can’t find in Los Angeles,” Carter says.

That sound is a blend of country, gospel and R & B, says Alabama Music Hall of Fame curator George Lair.

“You can draw a triangle from Nashville to Memphis to Muscle Shoals, and while Nashville is the country center, Memphis is generally known as the blues center,” Lair says. “Muscle Shoals, being between those two places, has been able to combine those two styles into a real Southern rhythm and blues that was very appealing.”

Among those drawn to the area was Paul Simon, who came in search of the band behind the recording that many call the essence of the Muscle Shoals sound: “I’ll Take You There” by the Staple Singers. Simon’s collaboration with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section produced the hits “Kodachrome” and “Loves Me Like a Rock.”

The Rolling Stones paid a visit in December 1969 in search of R&B inspiration for their Sticky Fingers LP (1971). Steve Appleford, author of a behind-the-recording-sessions look at the Stones called Rip This Joint, describes the visit as “. . . three impossibly productive days within the concrete tomb of Muscle Shoals Sound [which left the Stones] with backing tracks for ‘Brown Sugar,’ ‘Wild Horses,’ and ‘You Gotta Move,’ each song a career-defining anthem.” Though the Stones didn’t use the Muscle Shoals rhythm section, all three tracks were engineered by its guitarist, Johnson.

The Stones’ visit indicated how oblivious Muscle Shoals’ music-makers were to their growing fame within the music business. The Stones didn’t try to fit in with the denim of the Deep South, preferring their flamboyant snakeskin and boas. At a diner a waitress asked if they were in a music group, to which bassist Bill Wyman replied dryly, “Yes. We’re Martha & The Vandellas.” David Hood remembers that despite such obviousness, Atlantic Records had asked the Muscle Shoals studio crew to keep quiet about the Stones’ presence there. “We were naive enough not to capitalize on that,” he says ruefully.

Today the studios are mostly gone, but thanks to a new partnership with rap producer Dr. Dre and his partner Jimmy Iovine, the recording studios in Muscle Shoals are about to be revitalized.

Dre’s company, Beats Electronics, is entering a new partnership with the the renowned Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals to preserve the studio’s history and restore it to its former glory.

The announcement was made on November 26, 2013 and the project includes a massive renovation that would make Fame a fully-functional studio for the first time in years.

The studio will serve as a proving ground for up-and-coming young aspiring musicians, producers and engineers.

    – —Another Obamacare Success: More People Sign Up In 2 Days Than Signed Up In October – –:>)

    – —- -Here’s some more ACA good news. More people signed up for the ACA in two days this week than were able to sign up during the entire month of October.

CNN reported that a source familiar with the ACA enrollment numbers said, “The data is still being scrubbed but looks like we will be 29,000 for enrollment in federal exchange for the first two days since the site improvement deadline at the end of November (midnight Sunday to midnight Monday),” the source said, noting the number reflects people who have successfully selected a plan, but that haven’t yet paid for it.”

The 29,000 people that enrolled over two days this week were 2,000 more than the total that signed up in October. Over the course of a 31 day month, this projects to 884,500 enrollees, and as the deadline approaches the enrollment pace will quicken.

These numbers reveal that there will be millions of people signed up for the ACA very soon. This is why some Republicans are looking at these numbers and backing away from their position that the law must be repealed. The tide is turning, repealing the ACA is becoming a very unpopular position outside of the GOP. However, Republicans who are up for reelection next year continue to beat the drum of repeal, as a get out the Republican vote effort for 2014.

Absolutely! Short notice flights to Africa cost $$$$ plus if you can even get a seat on a flight. It’s not like there are tons of flights leaving the USA for Africa every hour.

The best part for me would be if they actually spent the money to fly there & get refused entry at passport & customs. You can’t just waltz into to any African country, especially South Africa & expect to be admitted without scrutiny.

Obama to Congress: Back down on Iran – - -

    – — -President Obama is sending two of his top diplomats to Capitol Hill next week in a final bid to stop new sanctions on Iran.

Secretary of State John Kerry and his lead Iran negotiator, Under
Secretary Wendy Sherman, will testify in public before House and Senate panels about the preliminary deal reached last month in Geneva.

Their goal: Convince skeptical lawmakers that levying new punishments on Iran could derail the sensitive nuclear negotiations.

“Passing any new sanctions right now will undermine our efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution to this issue by giving the Iranians an excuse to push the terms of the agreement on their side,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said this week.

ummm, probably not. The caffeine will wreak havoc on the fasting part. Caffeine is a stimulant. There is a reason why folks like coffee and donuts…

    • conlakappa

I’d ask your friend, why a cleansing fast? Try to work on getting your body in a state that cleanses on the regular. Drink enough water daily. Have succulent fruits and green, leafy vegetables daily. it would be less of an issue then.

Blessings to you Sag. Have a great day!

    • Alma98

Hola AG, the same to you!

      • Aquagranny911

Sunday report: We took our produce to Brother’s church to give away after the early Mass. A lot of elders go to that one & some people with young children.

We had the jar for donation to the food bank if people could afford a few pesos. Most gave something. One elder insisted on giving us 50 cents even though we begged him not to. He said: “This is for somebody worse off than me.” Bless him! A lady donated $10 & refused to take anything.

Best part is that Father P would like for us to come again & suggested that if we have enough maybe we could visit some other churches who have people in need. We are all up for this. I told him that we have a lot of citrus coming ripe.

We are covering the gardens during this cold snap. Supposed to get below 30 degrees tonight but warming up back to normal by Wed. If we can get through this we can keep feeding people.

        • Alma98

You and your folks are good people AG.
I hope the gardens don’t freeze, do you guys use those fire thingies to keep them warm. It was so cold here that I have to let my tree sit in the stand for a few days. It was frozen when we bought it. I thought AZ always got cold in the winter or is it just the desert?

          • Aquagranny911

We always get some light freezes even hard ones in the desert here depending on elevation but this cold is really unusual for this early. We have this more in January where I am. Of course the Northern areas & some parts of Southeast AZ get plenty of winter snow & icy rain & cold weather.

You will laugh but we use Christmas lights to keep the citrus toasty. I’m not to worried about them. More worried about tomatoes, cukes & peppers. Greens, broccoli & winter vege will be okay. But we have several bushels of tomatoes that just need a few more warm days to ripen.

          • Alma98

Hey the Christmas lights thing is a cool idea.

          • Aquagranny911

It works! We are thinking about doing that for the tomatoes tonight but we will have to go buy some more of those little lights. I will cry with sadness if we lose those tomatoes & the plants.

Those tomatoes are gorgeous & people love a fresh home grown tomato in the winter!

          • Alma98

I bought lights last night, I got a string of 140 lights at Lowes for 8.98. The Dollar Tree probably has them even cheaper but who knows how long they last lol.

David Simon: ‘There are now two Americas. My country is a horror show’
The creator of The Wire, David Simon, delivered an impromptu speech about the divide between rich and poor in America at the Festival of Dangerous Ideas in Sydney, and how capitalism has lost sight of its social compact.
    David Simon
The Observer, Saturday 7 December 2013

America is a country that is now utterly divided when it comes to its society, its economy, its politics. There are definitely two Americas. I live in one, on one block in Baltimore that is part of the viable America, the America that is connected to its own economy, where there is a plausible future for the people born into it. About 20 blocks away is another America entirely. It’s astonishing how little we have to do with each other, and yet we are living in such proximity.

Fiscal idiocy: What states refusing Medicaid will cost their citizens
    By Michael Hiltzik
    December 6, 2013, 2:03 p.m.

Sherry Glied and Stephanie Ma of the Commonwealth Fund have done the math to show how this calculation is affected by the refusal of 25 states to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. (Thanks to Brad DeLong at the Washington Center for Equitable Growth for the tip.) The bottom line is that as a pure fiscal and budgetary matter, refusing the Medicaid expansion is insane. The cost is $57 billion a year.

Christo Brand, Mandela’s jailer, praises the anti-apartheid icon
by Andrew Meldrum & Falzur Phillips, Associated Press | December 8, 2013

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — He was with Nelson Mandela during all those years the anti-apartheid icon was imprisoned on Robben Island. And, like millions around the world, he has been hit hard by Mandela’s death.

Yet this South African was not one of Mandela’s fellow prisoners. Christo Brand was his jailer.

Such was Mandela’s charm and ability to turn enemies into allies that even the black political prisoner and the white Afrikaans warden forged an unlikely but enduring friendship. Mandela used that same remarkable ability to forgive and to forge reconciliation to transform South Africa into a multiracial democracy after he stepped out of prison in 1990 and became the country’s first elected black president four years later.

Mandela and Brand last met about two years ago when Brand, now in his 50s, brought his wife, son and grandson to see Mandela in Cape Town in a Sunday afternoon visit that lasted nearly three hours.

O/T Even though my daughter will be here for Christmas I really miss decorating the tree with her. She loves Christmas and her enthusiasm is contagious. The men in the house could care less about decorating for Christmas lol. I have nearly all the ornaments the kids made in school. I have had to repair some over the years but they’re in pretty good shape.

    • Aquagranny911

Don’t they get into that light thing? Hubby lives for strewing Christmas lights over everything that isn’t moving. The Kiddos used to get so frustrated with him while he tweaked the lights before they could decorate the tree.

I love all those ornaments the children made but I have now passed those back to them since all are married with children of their own. Those are the special ones lovingly added to the tree each year along with those made by the grandchildren.

      • Alma98

Nope nadda lol. I have all these huge outdoor things that haven’t seen the light of day in years. My husband is just not into it. The only decorations that I have put up is a wreath. And considering what the Little monsters have done to some of my neighbor’s decorations I’m ok with it. My neighbor down the street had a huge santa & snoopy blowup in their yard stabbed. When they repaired them the little asses stabbed them again.

Daughter, younger sis and i decorated the tree yesterday. So glad for the help.. It didn’t take 2 hours to do lol.

        • Aquagranny911

When our Kiddos were real young we had this 6ft artificial tree. It took the four of them about 20 minutes to completely decorate the lower half of the tree. We then had some cocolate & a story while admiring the tree.

As soon as the children were off to sleep. Hubby & I would re-distribute the ornaments in a more equitable manner. Next morning the Kiddos always congratulated themselves on how beautiful the tree & how good they decorated it!

My mother did the same with me! I wasn’t ever as stoked about decorating a tree as she/her sisters are and used to put everything low.

I love the Sprint commercials with James Earl Jones and Malcolm McDowell…they crack me up

    • Aquagranny911

Hubby hates those commercials. He said: “What kind of estupido caca (shit) is that?” I told him he needs to get with the 21st century. They are funny.

      • rikyrah

they’re funny because they’re using two ‘ thespians’ to translate teen talk…..cracks me up.

        • conlakappa

They are also funny to me because it was long said about Jones that people would sit and listen to him read the phone book. Maybe McDowell because he has long played freaks. Now they both are being 15-year-old girls. Awesome.

Pope Francis Sneaks Out Of The Vatican At Night To Serve The Homeless
By Scott Keyes on December 3, 2013 at 10:58 am

The leader of the Catholic Church has been quietly sneaking out of the Vatican at night to minister to homeless residents, according to a new report.

I worry about this. I hope no one tries to hurt Pope Francis while he is doing good works. There are so many ugly haters out there who want him to stop speaking truth to meanness & evil.

      • rikyrah

        To be honest, AG…

I’m not worried about the folks in the street.

I’m worried about the enemies he’s making within the Vatican.

        • Aquagranny911

I’m not worried about the folks in the street either but those same enemies you mentioned. It would not be the first time for the Cardinals & their minions to take out a pope they did not like.

The Catholic church has centuries of corruption to answer for. Pope Francis appears to be the new broom who plans to sweep clean & not under the rug.

I will pray for his safety.

          Rikyrah, you ain’t EVEN lyin’.

      • conlakappa

It probably helps that he looks like every third man in Rome though.

AG what vege are you talking about?

Mix turmeric, chili powder & salt together in a small bowl & add
to vege along with the lamb

    • Aquagranny911

I think that was the onions, peppers, garlic that you were supposed to saute before you added the lamb. I hope I’m right. Re-check the recipe. All those are vege.

PS: I will try to stand by if you need anything else.

The documentary Muscle Shoals is great and a wonderful bookend to the 20 Feet from Stardom. Wow but was music a different thing.
