Sunday Open Thread: West Wing Week

This week, the White House honored those lost at Sandy Hook on the one year anniversary. The President met with newly elected mayors and executives from America’s leading technology companies, discussed the benefits of health care reform with a group of moms, and celebrated the holidays with Christmas in Washington.

Freezing rain causes thousands to lose power across southern Ontario

    By Andrew Russell Global News

Thousands of residents across southern Ontario are without power Sunday morning as a massive weather system moved across the region Saturday.

Hydro One is reporting an estimated 350,000 hydro customers are without power across the province with most outages coming in Kingston and eastern Ontario.

In Toronto, approximately 250,000 customers in pockets around the city lost power according to Toronto Hydro, with the largest outage impacting the area between York Mills to Lawrence and Victoria Park to Don Mills.

“The freezing rain is a concern for everyone right now. The weight it puts on tree branches and wires is a problem for us,” said Tanya Bruckmueller, a spokesperson for Toronto Hydro. “Right now we can’t guarantee restorations time at this point. With the road conditions and because it’s the evening it will take us a while to get to everyone.”

Morning all—this was probably already shared here, but I find it interesting that the media in general has so little to say about stories like this:

The Inside Story Of How The U.S. Acted To Prevent Another Rwanda

    http://thinkprogress.org/security/2013/12/20/3054321/inside-story-acted-prevent-rwanda

Yet somehow the beltway media insists that PBO had “the worst year ever.” Doesn’t compute! Liars.

    • jds09

The way PBO’s administration handled this was so powerful. One of his legacies will be a stable of people that knows how to make government work without the need for “good press” driving their decisions. That’s huge.

Here’s the Worst Part of the Target Data Breach

    —By Kevin Drum

You know what the most infuriating part of the massive data breach at Target is? This:

Over the last decade, most countries have moved toward using credit cards that carry information on embeddable microchips rather than magnetic strips. The additional encryption on so-called smart cards has made the kind of brazen data thefts suffered by Target almost impossible to pull off in most other countries.

Because the U.S. is one of the few places yet to widely deploy such technology, the nation has increasingly become the focus of hackers seeking to steal such information. The stolen data can easily be turned into phony credit cards that are sold on black markets around the world.

          Hi, Alma!

Probably.. but my parents are from LA and AR, respectively. If I go back in time, though, my maternal ancestors were in slavery in SC. Perhaps that’s it.

          • Alma98

Mine is from Ala, Tenn, NC. I think it’s cool that we still carry our ancestors in our dialects.

Since Mama’s from Mississippi and Daddy was from Tennessee, I guess this is right, even though I’ve never lived down South.

Mine was pretty spot on. I got Yonkers, NY (That’s the town that borders the one I grew up in NY), Jersey City, Newark/Patterson. I call deli sandwiches wedges, which is a big Westchester County NY thing, but folk will look at you strange if you say it in NYC proper. I also call lightening bugs peenie wallies because of my Jamaican family. And of course, I say ‘you guys’ for a group of people. If I know you well I’ll say y’all.

I finally learned what the heck a kitty-corner is from the questions and learned that there are drive-thru liquor stores.

I also got Yonkers, Newark/Patterson and Jersey City. Most of the time, I say “y’all” but once in a while I’ll say “youse”. Honestly, it’s mostly white, guido types that say “youse”.

        • JojoRaze

Youse is pretty much a white ethnic thing but I’ve said a few times not in jest. I think y’all is pretty universal in America now. I’ve said it lots of times not in jest with friends/family.

Thanks To Obamacare, The Number Of Women Who Aren’t Charged For Birth Control Has Jumped 25 Percent – Posted December 11, 2013

[....] The researchers surveyed data from women between the ages of 18 and 39, comparing the co-pays they paid for their birth control method before and after Obamacare’s contraceptive coverage requirement took effect for most insurance plans. Between those two time periods, they saw a sharp increase in the number of women who had no out-of-pocket costs for their birth control pills, jumping from just 15 percent to 40 percent. There was a similar increase among women using the vaginal ring, from 23 percent to 52 percent.

And the researchers point out that this trend is only likely to
continue, as more insurance plans lose their “grandfathered” status and adopt Obamacare’s new coverage requirements. But there’s still somewhat of a public awareness gap. Most women don’t actually realize that the health law’s contraceptive provision is in effect, or don’t understand exactly what types of services are covered.[...]

Fannie Mae Fee Increases to Be Delayed by FHFA Under Watt

[....] Watt, a North Carolina Democrat, was confirmed by the
Senate as FHFA director on Dec. 10. A day earlier, DeMarco said
Fannie Mae (FNMA) and Freddie Mac would raise fees by 10 basis points as part of an effort to shrink their mortgage-market footprint.

DeMarco also said the companies would start charging higher
fees in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Florida, states
where long foreclosure timelines make it more expensive for the
government-sponsored enterprises to dispose of properties they
take over after borrowers default. He said the companies also
would shift their fee structure so borrowers with poor credit
    would pay more.

Watt said he intends to delay all of those changes until he has time “to evaluate fully the rationale for the plan” and how it would affect the availability of credit and the companies’ risk exposure.[....]

Small Alabama town accidentally hires black drag queens to dance in Christmas parade
    By Scott Kaufman
    Sunday, December 22, 2013 12:09 EST

Residents in the small town of Semmes, Alabama were surprised when one of the acts in the annual Christmas parade was a group of black drag queens known as “The Prancing Elite.”

The captain of the troupe, Kentrell Collins, said he believed the offer had been made in good faith, and that the representative for the Friends of Semmes to whom he spoke knew who she was hiring.

“I said we’re all over 21 and we’re guys. She was so excited. She was like I didn’t know they had any groups like that in Mobile,” Collins told Fox 10 News.

The reaction of local residents to the troupe’s performance was overwhelmingly negative.

Obama Keeps Eye On Tense Situation In South Sudan

President Barack Obama said Saturday that continued violence and militancy in South Sudan would cost the world’s newest country the support of the United States and other nations. Obama said South Sudan’s leaders have a responsibility to help protect Americans, who came under fire hours earlier during an evacuation attempt.

While vacationing in Hawaii, Obama spoke by telephone with national security aides, the White House said. He told his team to work with the U.N. to keep evacuating Americans from Bor, where some of South Sudan’s worst violence over the last week has played out. Among those briefing the president was his national security adviser, Susan Rice, who a day earlier recorded an audio message to South Sudan’s leaders urging them not to allow the nation “to be torn apart by violence and suffering.”[....]

Paper Karma could be your best friend this catalog season

[....] The Paper Karma app takes very little time to download, create an account, and enter your address. Once that’s done, you take photos through the app of the bar code, account numbers, and name and address on unwanted catalogs and other mailings and hit the “Unsubscribe me!” button.[....]It also allows you to have more than one name or address registered.[....]

I have spent years meticulously unsubscribing to catalogs and other junk mail, and I’ve seen a drastic decrease. Every fall, though, some that I’ve unsubscribed to and some I’ve never heard of find their way into my mailbox. I had a four of them waiting for me to handle on my desk, and after setting up the app, it took me less than two minutes to put in unsubscribe requests.

My sister brought me some Peanut Brittle last night.

I don’t even like Peanut Brittle, unless it’s the top of the line stuff.

THIS is top of the line. This stuff is so addictive, it’s crazy.

Good thing I didn’t let her leave the box.

There’s a reason I stopped going to the Amish booth at the Farmer’s market…I’d buy their Brittle and the next thing I knew the whole tub was gone….

    • Alma98

      LOL!

    • isonprize

Amish stuff ain’t no joke. One of many fond memories of my mother involves stopping at Amish street markets in Philadelphia. She had been ‘jonesin’ for something sweet. My mother LOVED peanut butter and we were driving past an Amish market. “Baby, stop and get me some of that peanut brittle. I know that’ll satisfy my sweet tooth. Here’s some $. G

      • rikyrah

I feel your mother about the Peanut Brittle…..

        I didn’t share either..LOL

LOL! Well, well well…looks like the Duck Dynasty clan conned “real ‘Muricans.” Color me black and unsurprised! Start at the 3:00 minute mark to see what they looked like before the show. LOL!

    Duck Dynasty Is Fake!

    • Alma98

I always thought a lot of these shows are fake as hell.

      • creolechild

This is too funny though. They look like Mitt Romney’s brood without the beards and camo getups. Wasn’t nothing backwoods about them; they were, and are, nothing but a bunch of YUPPIES getting over.

        • Alma98

Yep they do look like Mitt’s family, his rant was awesome and true. Look at the idiots in the comments that are mad that he exposed them. This needs to be spread far and wide. LOL

      • BoomerGal

Indeed they are fake. Found that out when I learned how much HWOA are getting.

    Poppa Sacco’s not having it!

Father of fired public relations director: ‘I’m so ashamed of her. She’s a f*cking idiot’ http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/12/22/father-of-fired-public-relations-director-im-so-ashamed-of-her-shes-a-fcking-idiot/

    • creolechild

YOUCH! Is it fair to assume that Christmas will be a little awkward this year in the Sacco household?

    • Alma98

      Damn!

    • isonprize

uh, what does Zac say about dreaming about having sex with an autistic kid? HHHhhhmmm? Is that not offensive? Does Zac suggest “focusing on the subject and NOT the tweet”?

Get the ENTIRE FCUK OUT OF HERE WITH THIS ISHT!!!

      • Tafr

Thank you! What the hell is wrong with these people. She is lucky folks are not calling her a wannabe pedophile.

        • TyrenM

Let that be one of us tweeting that shit.

      • Aquagranny911

You know where I stand on this. The biscuit has some serious wires loose between her brain & her mouth. It really makes you wonder what kind of home raised her.

        • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

She has a series case of Affluenza.

          • BoomerGal

            There it is!!!

    • jds09

I’ll admit it, her father’s reaction totally surprises me. lol

      • Aquagranny911

Me too but I’m believing he’s embarrassed & thinking of himself. This biscuit has to have used Daddy’s influence or slept her way to the job. No way is she competent on her own.

PR people even if they suck in their personal character do think about image. She has to understand that the intertubes are forever & that stuff can go viral with a click. She does work for a social media co, after all. I suppose her under paid assistant does all her work!

    • conlakappa

Again with the use of “mob” by her defenders. It’s very deliberate. Who the hell uses that word in regular conversation?

  • Miranda

    Afternoon thread is up!

  • crazycanuck

How do you get an elderly person out of a house that doesn’t want to leave? Especially in this crazy weather and there is no electricity.

    • Miranda

You just take them out and don’t pay attention to them fussing and cussing because they don’t wanna leave their house.

      • crazycanuck

horrors, not sure that will work with this particular person, will pass it along.
