Sunday Open Thread: West Wing Week

This week, the President hosted the first State Visit for the French President in 20 years, signed the farm bill and raised the minimum wage for federal contractors. That’s February 7th to February 13th or, “The Red, White, and Blue — and the Blue, White, and Red”

I’m up early, so “Good morning Saints and Aints!”

Posted about this late yesterday, but if you missed it last night (with all the shit going on with that Florida bullshit, I completely forgot to record it), CBS News 48 Hours aired a program called “The Whole Gritty City”.

“…follows three New Orleans marching bands. The bands’ directors do more than prepare students to march in Mardi Gras parades: they battle for their lives and souls against the lures and dangers of the streets.”

You can watch the whole program online like I did here:

    Trailer: The Whole Gritty City

It is both heart wrenching and heartwarming. At certain moments, I would dare ya not to cry. Even with the sad parts, after the frustration of yesterday evening, after watching it online, it eased my soul a little bit to see the little black boys and girls who just wanted to play some music and who greatest night was marching in a Mardi Gras parade.

It was just a lovely story. So please check it out!

How shameful that this is true

  • MonieTalks

During closing arguments, prosecutor John Guy told jurors, “Jordan Davis didn’t have a weapon. He had a big mouth. And that defendant wasn’t gonna stand for it. And it cost Jordan Davis his life.”

See folks. It was doomed from the beginning because when the prosecution representing a dead TEEN does not even believe you have a right to live, the defense will place every bit of doubt in a juror’s mind and finish off the seeds of injustice that the prosecution HELPED plant.

How the hell does Jordan Davis supposedly having a big mouth, UNARMED INSIDE OF A VEHICLE, have to do with anything? I truly believe that when you substitute “it” with big mouth in that travesty of a closing argument, we know not one prosecutor gave a damn about justice, the same as Trayvon.

This is what the prosecution meant, when they put Jordan Davis on trial for his own death, aiding the defense:

During closing arguments, prosecutor John Guy told jurors, “Jordan Davis didn’t have a weapon. He had a big mouth. And that defendant wasn’t gonna stand for Jordan’s big mouth. And Jordan’s big mouth cost Jordan Davis his life.” I can guarantee that is how some jurors heard it.

    • qosine

The hate and bias run so deep, even the prosecutor tries to equalize Jordan Davis and Dunn — “big mouth” = “big gun”
so even though Jordan Davis was unarmed, sitting in his seat,
his “big mouth” caused his murder. That shifts the blame to
Jordon as the “thug” instigator, w/ Dunn’s “natural reaction” was to strike back vs. split second intent under the cover of SYG to murder Jordan Davis. IMHO that’s why mistrial on Murder 1.

      • itgurl_29

I honestly feel like white prosecutors have no business trying these cases. They are also racists and see Jordan as a “thug”. Deep down they all feel Dunn did what was right and that Jordan had it coming.

SmartyPants: Jordan Davis And The Heritage Of Racism

Those who didn’t watch the trial might not know that Dunn’s testimony was that he had a verbal altercation with Jordan and “thought” he saw a weapon. In response, he started shooting. As the car Jordan was in tried to flee, Dunn got out of his car and continued shooting at it, narrowly missing killing the driver. It was this latter shooting that the jury agreed was attempted murder.

I join those who suggest that Dunn’s account of what happened between he and Jordan is simply not credible. Police found no gun in the car, no one but Dunn heard any threats from Jordan, Dunn fled the scene without calling the police and he didn’t say anything to his fiance about a gun over the next 24 hours as he tried to reassure her. But as I understand the law, the prosecutors had to prove – beyond a reasonable doubt – that Jordan did NOT have a gun. It is almost impossible to prove a negative. That, my friends, is the result of the odious and racist Stand Your Ground law

The folks on the blogs hold the same internal beliefs that Michael Dunn did…they just fight harder to conceal them and pretend that they are open-minded.

I have no use for moos who would even DARE tell us what the “real issue” is on this case, or use the tired line “the justice system was used and we have to accept it whether we like it or not.:

Folks at the same damn sites will go on incessantly about how the government “murdered” folks like reddit co-founder Schwartz, even though he killed HIMSELF and in the same breath believe that maybe Jordan Davis’s sassing did create the perfect storm for himself.

These same moos want to act like a brutal was of unfairness pertaining to the war on drugs is happening NOW because they readily want access to some weed…GTFOH…if their ass never protested crack-cocaine disparity for the last 30 years which has helped filled prisons with POC, they can shut the hell up.

Mofos can scream drones all day to defend an American terrorist whose number one mission was to make propaganda videos instructing others to kill folks….and as soon as an attack like Boston happens, they are blamed government inaction. Fuck all these folks. I am so sick of the assault on US….from the President on down.

I am just tired…I’m angry..I feel like fighting, honestly

I just can’t believe that some of the last words the prosecute used before the jury went on to decide was that “Jordan Davis had a big mouth….”

I don’t even feel like holding on to dignity anymore….where is it getting US?

    • jds09

White-American culture (both liberal and conservative) both benefit from the enforcement of Jim Crow Etiquette. I’ve long believed that white southerners do the heavy lifting, they are the enforcers that can kill with impunity, while liberals cover their backsides by derailing the issue, i.e. its a problem limited to Florida, or to that specific jury, we’re too angry, it happens to them to etc.

Meanwhile, people that Dunn walk, the Boomans and Balloon Juices’ of the world get to keep their unearned advantage and dismiss our pain.

Somethings a little bit different now. Jordan’s parents are not just mourning with their local community, but with black people all over America. This shit is still happening, but its not happening in isolation. I’m trying to hold onto that.

Margaret Morton: In My Eyes, Obamacare Literally Saved My Life

I’m so thankful for being able to tell my story—I’ve cashed in all my karma chips and then some, and I work every day to earn more back. In my eyes, Obamacare literally saved my life. In 2011, I knew something was wrong. And when my neck swelled to the size of my collarbone, I knew something was very, very wrong. They caught the top of my tumor: It was non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The cough I had was the result of my lungs being strangled.

Now, I was 22 when I started going to
doctor after doctor. In May 2011, I turned 23—the age that I would have had to go off my parents’ health insurance plan. But luckily that was the year the Obamacare provision allowing children to stay on their parents’ plan until 26 went into effect. I’m in remission now. October was my two year anniversary. Right around then, my mother told me: “Somepeople are one-issue voters. Well, my issue is that my daughter
wouldn’t be alive without Obamacare. The President saved her life.

Christie’s connections to bridge closure grow
    By Julian Hattem
    February 16, 2014, 01:27 pm

A new person connected to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) was on the front lines when George Washington Bridge lanes were closed, a revelation that will raise additional questions about Christie’s role in the closures.

According to documents obtained by MSNBC, Port Authority Lt. Thomas “Chip” Michaels, a childhood friend of the governor, was at the bridge when access lanes were closed in September. He drove around the Christie appointee who supervised the closing, David Wildstein.

Michaels reportedly coached Christie’s son’s little league hockey team, and his brother is a powerful Republican lobbyist whose stock has risen during the Christie administration.

Michaels described the effect of the lane closures as a “traffic disaster” in a text message sent the day after the lanes were closed to Wildstein, the man Christie appointed to be the head of interstate capital projects at the Port Authority.

Josh Israel: Florida County Eliminates Minority-Heavy Polling Places

On a party-line vote, a Florida county’s Republican majority Board of County Commissioners voted Tuesday to eliminate almost one-third of Manatee County’s voting sites. The board accepted a proposal by Supervisor of Elections Mike Bennett (R) by a 6-1 vote to trim the number of precincts, despite unanimous public testimony against the move — and complaints by the lone Democratic Commissioner that it would eliminate half of the polling places in his heavily minority District 2.

Bennett, in his first term as elections supervisor, proposed reducing the number of Manatee County precincts from 99 to 69. In 2011, while serving in the Florida Senate, he endorsed making it hard to vote: “I wouldn’t have any problem making it harder. I would want them to vote as badly as I want to vote. I want the people of the state of Florida to want to vote as bad as that person in Africa who’s willing to walk 200 miles…This should not be easy.”

How predictable…since the GOP is at war within itself..time to try and create same meme for the Dems.
For Democrats looking to post-Obama era, how populist a future?
By Dan Balz and Philip Rucker, Published: February 15

With three years remaining in the presidency of Barack Obama, the party he has led since mesmerizing members with his 2008 campaign has begun debating a post-Obama future.

Though more united than Republicans, Democrats nevertheless face simmering tensions between the establishment and a newly energized populist wing, led by the unabashed liberalism of New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and the fiery rhetoric of Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

The schisms are as much stylistic as substantive. But however defined, they offer a challenge to the party’s next leader, whether former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden or any number of lesser-knowns who await a decision by Clinton before making their own.more here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/for-democrats-looking-to-post-obama-era-how-populist-a-future/2014/02/15/8204b4bc-95c4-11e3-8461-8a24c7bf0653_story.html?hpid=z2

He was never “unfocused”…he had to deal with the most obstructive, stupid ass congress ever thanks to the GOP.
Atty. Gen. Eric Holder reinvigorated to pursue his goals

Dogged by controversy and seemingly unfocused for most of his tenure, Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. is surprising both supporters and critics with an ambitious liberal agenda in Obama’s second term.
    By Timothy M. Phelps
    February 15, 2014, 6:11 p.m.

WASHINGTON — Eric H. Holder Jr. sounds like a man who suddenly found a second wind.

During his first four years as America’s top law enforcement officer, Holder’s tenure at the Justice Department seemed so unfocused and controversy-prone that even Democrats began to question what the nation’s first African American attorney general had accomplished, and whether he had the passion to stick it out.

But since President Obama’s reelection, the 63-year-old Holder has tackled his responsibilities with newfound energy and determination, surprising critics and supporters alike by striking out on a broad, ambitious and unapologetically liberal agenda.

He moved to shorten prison sentences of nonviolent criminals, went after some of the nation’s largest banks for fraud, sued two states to block laws he said would make voting more difficult for minorities, and signaled plans to bar federal agents from considering religion, national origin, gender or sexual orientation in investigations.

Just this month, he called upon states to scrap laws preventing ex-convicts from voting, and issued a directive expanding government recognition of same-sex marriages to federal courtrooms and prisons, giving gay and lesbian spouses the same rights as married couples even in states that don’t recognize such unions.

No doubt a very good decision on her part.
Alex Sink rejects NBC, Chuck Todd for debate
By ALEX ISENSTADT | 2/14/14 4:28 PM EST

When it came to laying down the ground rules for an upcoming debate in the closely watched Florida congressional special election, Democrat Alex Sink — who seems allergic to the national attention her race is getting — had big demands: No NBC. And no Chuck Todd.

With all eyes trained on the race between Sink and Republican David Jolly, NBC officials recently got in touch with organizers of a Feb. 25 debate. They proposed that Todd, the network’s chief White House correspondent and a Florida native, lead the questioning of the two candidates.

For the Clearwater Regional Chamber of Commerce, which is hosting the forum, getting NBC and Todd involved sounded like a coup. There would be plenty of exposure — the debate would be played on local NBC network affiliates and clips would appear on MSNBC, where Todd hosts “The Daily Rundown.”

But organizers soon realized they had a problem. Jolly, who’s the underdog in the race and who’s looking for as much attention as he can get, was fine with having Todd moderate the debate. But Sink, according to three sources involved in the debate planning, wasn’t. Earlier this week, after spending a couple of days considering the offer, Sink’s campaign gave the Clearwater chamber the word: Todd – and NBC — was a no-go.

They said they wanted to stick with the initial plan to have Susan McManus, a University of South Florida political scientist, handle the questioning.

That’s a spectacular child in that tweet but truth be told, when I was in 9th and 10th grade, my grades were TERRIBLE. I’ve always been known as sweet/pleasant on the surface but my underlying attitude was really not good at that time. If an animal degenerate THUG like Zimmerman or Dunn had got a hold of me and their counsel inspected my life and that of my friends, they’d easily be able to do me harm and paint me as a menace based on racial prejudices. God bless these stellar children but we should not have to be superlative to be left alone. A lot of teenagers are awful, smart-mouthed, challenge authority, sometimes nasty—for these POS to open fire on a child for not respecting their “authority” (as I believe happened in both cases)…I have no words. I guess I’m just ranting as usual.

MIAMI (AP) — Trayvon Martin’s parents have expressed their support for the parents of a 17-year-old who was fatally shot after an argument over loud music.

Their statement comes as a jury in Jacksonville, Fla., is in the fourth day of deliberations in the trial of Michael Dunn. He’s charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of Jordan Davis outside a convenience store. He claims he shot the teen in self-defense, but prosecutors say Dunn opened fire because he felt disrespected by Davis after their argument.

In a statement today, Trayvon Martin’s parents said that no matter the verdict, Jordan Davis’ parents won’t ever see him again. Martin’s parents said Davis’ killing is “yet another reminder that in Florida, racial profiling and stereotypes” may serve as the basis for illegitimate fear “and the shooting and killing of young teenagers.”http://www.sandiego6.com/story/martin-s-parents-offer-support-for-davis-parents-20140215

NORTH CAROLINA-(BASN) – In the midst of Jordan Davis murder case, where a 47 year old white male named Michael Dunn fired shots into a car killing a Black teenager allegedly over loud music in Jacksonville, Florida in broad daylight at a gas station in November 2012., I find it quite odd, especially with the anniversary OF Trayvon Martin’s death approaching, which his murderer George Zimmerman walked away a free man and was scheduled to fight in a celebrity boxing match with DMX, which was cancelled, that we could even debate why Oklahoma State’s Michael Smart would be shoving a Texas Tech fan, who allegedly called him a “Nigger,” “told him to go by to Africa, or even called him a ”piece of crap,” which he was suspended for three games.more here: http://blackathlete.net/2014/02/marcus-smart-black-athletic-revolt/

Angela Corey’s term is up in 2016. Are there any viable candidates to challenge her? #DunnTrial

She needs to be kicked the hell out of that job like RIGHT NOW!

Why the hell is Univision interviewing Zimmeran? Why are they entertaining his whining about his life? Who cares what his life is like, at least he HAS one.http://gawker.com/george-zimmerman-wants-his-normal-life-back-1523648123

She has been all over the palette during award season. There is hope for me yet seeing her in some shade of purple at the Oscars!

    Evening thread is up!

  • And all the backseat lawyering — is there such a thing as lawyersplaining? Coz there should be.

See, what had happened was this legal thing and that legal thing and this furtherly detailed legal thing and that more detailed legal thing. No one is asking for legal-splaining, we are looking for an arc toward justice.
